A new framework that collates and interprets pre-existing data to assess vulnerability and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise flood-related risk to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue has been developed. The æClimate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation ResultsÆ (CRATER) method tested at a coal mine in Queensland, provides semi-quantitative information to assist decision makers when designating investment for minimising vulnerability of mining operations to climate. Here we present the processes involved in this three-step approach that uses pre-existing spatial data of the mine site and local knowledge to build a set of visual tools to assist decision-making. The first step of the process is performing multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS) on ranked natural conditions at the mine, such as elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation, which is performed to identify critical flood areas. Secondly, a fault-tree analysis identifies how impact can occur and what options there are for impact reduction. Finally, a resource assessment of the mineÆs capacity to adapt reduces the adaptation options to those most suited to the mine. The results are confidential, but for the purpose of introducing the methodology, we present simplified results, particularly of steps 2 and 3. CRATER can also be used for future æwhat-ifÆ flooding scenarios to identify the most suitable locations for roads, buildings or other critical infrastructure. The methodology is transferable to any mine, series of mines or locations along the mining value chain that have sufficient data, providing a practical decision-making tool to identify æno-regretsÆ actions that not only could reduce downtime after or during an event, but in some cases may enhance production between extreme events. Raise boring is the preferred option for constructing ventilation shafts in Australia. The trend has been towards larger diameters and longer single-pass shafts, and if at all possible, reaming through to the surface. The risk of raise failures, due to missed, unforseen or latent ground conditions has therefore been increasing, along with the need for better, more confident stability assessments.While the stability of specific weak zones and structures must be assessed individually, empirical rock mass classification schemes have been successfully used for about the last 20 years to assess general raise stability; eg the McCracken and Stacey method (M&S).Unfortunately M&S, as originally documented in McCracken and Stacey (1989), did not include a database of raise diameter and rock mass conditions versus actual performance. Nor was there a procedure for assessing the risk of failure due to adverse ground conditions. Peck and Lee (2008) published an Australian database of raise bore performance. Raise diameter and ground conditions, in terms of a lower bound Qr value, were presented for 50 cases versus raise performance. This paper updates the 2008 raise performance plot with more and SRF-corrected data. McCracken and Stacey (1989) had previously recommended that additional geotechnical data should be acquired and analysed when the proposed raise plotted on the unstable side of raisebore stability ratio (RSR) = 1.3, but the Australian data used in this study also suggests that all sites with Qr Contributions and sensitivities of various rock mass parameters (RQD, Jn, Ja, Jr, Jw, SRF, time-dependent weathering/deterioration) to raise stability and risk of failure are discussed. Numerous case studies are used to illustrate issues with stability assessments.As raises can now be remotely supported using sprayed fibrecrete, questions of time-dependency are also discussed. In recent times, contiguous piles, ‘mini-piles’ and grouting have also been successfully used to presupport or otherwise improve the stability of near-surface sections of weathered, or poor quality rock masses.

The Nova Ni-Cu-Co Operation, located in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, commenced commercial production in July 2017 only five years after discovery. Owned by Independence Group NL (IGO), the operation has successfully ramped up over an accelerated schedule and currently deploying leading technologies. This paper begins with a description of the Nova Operation, and its journey to achieve full production in such a short time frame. It includes discussions on development and production design, selection of fixed plant infrastructure, and the features challenges of running a low-pressure primary ventilation circuit. The paper also discusses key technologies that have improved overall safety for the underground workforce, and improved operational efficiencies. Investigations continue into the implementation of further technological applications for safety and productivity enhancements. This paper also discusses the findings from a study into transitioning from a diesel to an all-electric underground mining fleet, based on a review of Nova if it were to be developed today with the current EV offerings. The study indicates compelling savings will be available to future mines when considering development design, project schedule, capital outlay and operational savings, and the ‘next Nova’ is expected to be all electric.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014. The Wonawinta silver project near Cobar in NSW is under development by Cobar Consolidated Resources Limited (CCR). RMDSTEM Limited is part of the owner’s team for feasibility, design, engineering, construction and commissioning.With a 51Moz resource CCR is one of the largest pure silver players in Australia. A probable reserve of 14.3Moz has been defined for a mine life of approximately five years. The silver mineralization is contained in host rock composed of clays and oxidized limestone. The ore also contains on average 1.3% lead as cerussite, and other minerals. A simple circuit consisting of slurrying of the ore, gravity treatment of the coarse fraction to recover lead, silver extraction using CIL, elution and the Merrill Crowe silver recovery process, has been developed.The “value engineering” approach to this development pioneered over the past decade by RMDSTEM has meant that RMDSTEM has delivered the bankable feasibility study at a cost of $0.07 per resource ounce. It is highly cost effective making efficient use of shareholders funds as well as being very time efficient. This paper describes the application of the value engineering approach to the development of the Wonawinta project.

Bacteria can play a key role in the processing of 'difficult' ores. Bioleaching opens the way to potentially extract copper from vast amounts of otherwise hard to process refractory low-grade chalcopyrite. In my talk I will outline our research philosophy to develop bioleaching as a Precision Processing unit process step. In our view, Precision Processing is a sophisticated approach to mineral processing where the ultimate goal is to measure and characterise the ore body in-ground and in real time during mining, allowing the down-stream unit processes (bioleaching, in this case) to be continuously tailored and tuned via feedback and feed-forward controls to obtain the highest possible recoveries at the lowest possible cost and environmental impact. I will describe some of the work that we are undertaking to better understand the interfacial phenomena underlying the fundamental bioleaching process with the aim of coming to a Precision Processing approach. We use techniques such as interfacial electrochemistry (scanning electrochemical microscopy, SECM), AFM, zeta potential measurement, and synchrotron science to elucidate the parameters that drive bacterial selectivity and adhesion, bacterial metabolism, and dissolution and precipitation processes for model systems and real chalcopyrite ores. As examples of our research, I will discuss in some detail our method to produce and characterise micro-patterned CuxS - silica thin films as model substrates for electrochemical and bacterial adhesion work and our approach to the interfacial chemical characterisation of extracellular polymeric substances of bio-active bacterial cells. I will also cover some of our recent findings relating to measurement and interpretation of bacterial adhesion on sulfidic substrates and its implications for bacterial adhesion and substrate selectivity. After having identified and discussed crucial leaching parameters, such as pH, Eh, T, [Cu2+], and [O2], the talk will go on addressing some of the early achievements and challenges encountered in our work to design and prepare low-cost, rugged sensing devices that allow the in-situ (in this case, in-dump or in-heap) localised measurement of these parameters. I will conclude my talk by painting the picture of how the work of our group might contribute to realising the dream of transforming bioleaching into genuine high-tech Precision Processing of minerals. The 1999 edition of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the æJORC CodeÆ) became effective in September 1999 and is the latest revision of a Code which was originally issued in 1989, but which has an ancestry dating back to the first JORC report released in 1972. The modifications introduced in 1999, which are briefly discussed in this paper, substantially improved the document, but did not materially alter the fundamentals of the Code, these being the Mineral Resource/Ore Reserve classification framework and terminology, and the requirements and guidelines for public reporting of Resources and Reserves. Codes or guides similar to the JORC Code exist or are under development in other countries, including the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa. It is pleasing to note that the 1999 JORC Code has been used as a model by these countries in developing their latest standards, and has been a major influence in the formulating of international reporting standards. The JORC Code is primarily a document covering the reporting of the results of mining companiesÆ activities to the public. However, mining geologists are interested in practical assistance and guidance in carrying out their duties. The JORC Code provides this in four ways. It establishes a framework within which those preparing and publicly reporting Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates must operate, by setting standards for the classification and reporting of Resources and Reserves and for qualifications of Competent Persons. It establishes the division of responsibility between the companyÆs Board of Directors and Competent Persons with respect to the preparation and reporting of Resources and Reserves, and empowers Competent Persons to materially influence how their Resource/Reserve estimates are reported to the public. It provides an extensive, detailed and practical check list of criteria to be taken into account in the preparation of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates. Finally, it provides a strong measure of due diligence protection in the event of litigation if it is followed with diligence and honesty.

Woodcutters is a polymetallic vein-style deposit hosted by sediments of the Palacoproterozoic Whites Formation which forms part of the sedimentary sequence in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. Past production and identified resources total over eight million tonnes at 5.5 per cent lead, 12.1 per cent zinc and 110 gA silver. The local geology is influenced by Archaean basement highs; the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes. Unconformably overlying basement are interbedded clastic and crystalline carbonate units (Batchelor Group) representing cyclic changes in the depositional environment. These exhibit onlapping features with the underlying rocks. Sediments of the overlying Frances Creek Group suggest a quiet period during subsidence and subsequent increase in water depth (the carbonaceous dolomitic shales and the interbedded dololutites of the Whites Formation) followed by proximal uplift resulting in the inundation of turbiditic flows (Acacia Gap Quartzite). All of the Palaeoproterozoic rocks show evidence of being affected by penecontemporaneous, basement circling faults with steep dips. The stress regime during the deposition of the Frances Creek Group was characterised by alternating episodes of thrusting and transpression. Periods of relaxation also occurred. The compression resulted in major NS strike-slip (transpressional) faulting, en-echelon NNE trending folds and NW-SE tensional cross faults. Thrusting produced N-S striking, steep dipping reverse faults and a possible decollement immediately above the Batchelor Group. Relaxation is evidenced by the intrusion of lamprophyre dykes and dolerite sills (Zamu Dolerite). Mineralisation at Woodcutters occurred in faults within the Whites Formation, probably synchronous with deformation and the deposition of the upper parts of the Frances Creek Group. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred as the rocks were further buried. Several massive sulphide bodies occur at Woodcutters. A number of features influence the location and shape of these bodies. They are: ò the N-S transpressional faults and in particular associated dilation zones; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the axial plane of the NNE trending Woodcutters Anticline; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the NW-SE cross-faults; ò intersection of dololutite rich units with the NS transpressional faults where local replacement takes place; ò thickening of the lithological units in the vicinity of the anticlinal axis; and ò the anticline doubly plunging to both the north and south. The mineralisation exhibits vein-like features as well as epigenetic textures. Its boundaries are sharp, its thickness varies rapidly down dip and along strike, and no alteration halo exists though stringer veins of quartz-carbonate-pyrite ¦ sphalerite/galena occur in close proximity. A number of sulphide mineral assemblages have been recognised, each separated by periods of deformation and partially replacing the earlier assemblages. Vertically continuous zonation patterns highlight the presence of rich galena-sphalerite-silver in zones of maximum dilation and pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold concentrated at the along strike peripheries. The genetic model proposed has the mineralisation occurring whilst the transpressional regime was active. It was deposited from the same fluid that elsewhere in the Geosyncline formed the stratiform deposits higher in the sedimentary pile. Hydrocarbons sourced from the organic-rich Whites

The Truong Son fold-thrust belt (TSFTB) is a prominent tectonic component of mainland Indochina that occurs as a north-west–south-east-trending tectonic entity that extends from north-eastern Laos, straddles the Laos-Vietnam border area and is submerged under the sea basin in east central Vietnam. The TSFTB hosts numerous regional-scale gold and polymetallic base metal deposits, and the mineralisation occurs along the strike of the belt; however, the potential of many of these deposits are inadequately evaluated. The ore mineralisation is hosted by different rock assemblages, including highly metamorphosed Late Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks and Palaeozoic sedimentary and/or volcanic packages, which were intruded by several phases of magma and underwent a number of tectonic events. Several ore-forming styles – including porphyry, Carlin-type and sediment-hosted orogenic Au – were formed during at least two phases of regional thermotectonism that have been identified in the TSFTB. However, all of the major gold deposits/mineralisations are closely related to region-wide structural breaks and many of them are controlled by large-scale, high-strain zones. Geochemical data related to AMD for the West Coast and Southland regions have been collated into a relational database and GIS system. The types of information include; rock geochemical data, water chemistry data and aquatic macro-invertebrate abundance data. This information will be combined with eco-toxicology experiments to determine impact thresholds on aquatic ecosystems. Ultimately these datasets will be combined with remediation investigations to produce a Framework to assist decision making related to mine planning, consent and compliance.   Current geochemical research examines the controls on As concentrations downstream of gold mining areas and the variability of AMD from Brunner Coal Measure rocks. Assessment of factors that control the chemistry of Brunner Coal Measure AMD such as mine type, hydrogeology, geology, geochemistry and climate is in progress. Minerals that control the concentration of aluminium downstream of AMD point sources include alunite, jurbanite and various forms of Al(OH)3.

There is still a huge challenge in efficiently recovering the arsenides minerals that are largely concentrated in the Platreef Bushveld Complex which constitutes about 21 per cent of the platinum group minerals (PGMs). Therefore new collectors are required to improve the recovery separation of hard to float minerals, in particular sperrylite. The triazine modifications are promising reagents for mineral flotation and have not been given much attention in minerals processing. The adsorption of sodium 2,6-dithio-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTBAT), sodium 2,6- ditrithiocarbonate-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTTCBAT) and sodium normal butyl xanthate (SNBX) on sperrylite (100) surface were performed to identify a well performing collector molecule. We observed that the triazine collectors preferred to bridge on surface As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SDTTCBAT > SDTBAT > SNBX, indicating that the SDTTCBAT had strong exothermic adsorption on sperrylite and pyrite. These results showed that the ditrithiocarbamate had a great influence in the adsorption strength on the sperrylite surface. Importantly it was found that the triazine collector had stronger adsorption than the xanthate, which portrayed a promising replacement of xanthate collector. These results paved a way for design of novel collector for sperrylite and other chalcogenide minerals to improve their recovery.

Australian companies and consultants are becoming ever more involved in projects in African, South American, East European and Middle Eastern countries. However, significant differences in culture and approach to projects sometimes make these projects challenging for reasons that are not purely technical. Often the challenges are rather related to how the project owner and local authorities perceive the reality. These perceptions and sometimes unrealistic expectations regarding project costs and potential outcomes need to be addressed by the æWesternÆ project developer and consultant.This paper will discuss the specific experience of Snowden in studies commissioned by companies from such countries for the development of very large, low-grade gold deposits in some of the most inhospitable areas in the world. The paper will further review similar projects undertaken in other ænew worldÆ countries and compare these to the initial Snowden experience.As the process operating costs of operations in many of these countries are extremely competitive when compared to the typical Australian operating costs, the paper will review the operating costs and the factors which may be pertinent to a large project of this nature, both in the Australian and the ænew worldÆ context. At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. The granite porphyry dyke has a thickness of up to 40 m, extends discontinuously for about 8 km, and intrudes thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The granite dyke and gold-bearing sulphide and quartz-siderite veins within it have been deformed and recrystallised during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous.   The unaltered granite porphyry is composed of phenocrysts of perthite, arfvedsonite, aegerine and quartz in a groundmass of the same minerals, with accessory ilmenite, rutile and fluorite. K-Ar dates of amphibole from the granite gave ages of 226 and 246 Ma, but these ages may be a minimum due to resetting during the thermal and deformation events that have affected the area. Unpublished Ar-Ar data on amphibole from the granite show disturbed spectra with high temperature steps around 300-315 Ma, which is consistent with the age of A-type granites in the Buller region. Further age dating of primary and hydrothermal minerals in the granite is continuing. At least three stages of hydrothermal alteration have been identified in the granite. Stage I alteration is characterised by high fO2 magnetite-siderite ¦ biotite, which is cut by thin quartz-pyrite veinlets (Stage II). These are cut by Stage III sulphide, quartz and siderite veins, and pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile ¦ pyrite-siderite-sericite assemblages overprints the earlier alteration stages. Lamprophyre is altered to a siderite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. Stage III sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, deposited by low fO2 H2S fluids. The gold contains 18-30 wt% Ag and up to 1 wt% Bi. Temperature of vein formation was estimated from vein quartz fluid inclusion homogenisation temperatures (Th 260-355oC, average 330oC), arsenopyrite-sphalerite thermometry (310-365oC) and quartz-albite stable isotope thermometry (340oC). The altered granite and the veins have been deformed, and recrystallised and competent sulphide minerals are fractured and brecciated. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre.

The mining industry continues to faces significant challenges due to increasing resource constraints (quality of ore bodies, water, energy, human resources) and increasing license to operate requirements (safety, health, environment, location) from society, employees and shareholders. Technology advancements and hence research are necessary to ensure that the industry remains viable in this changing environment. Collaborative research is an important part of a company's research portfolio and offers the opportunity for the industry to work on generic issues that it is facing. Obvious benefits include the reduced cost to individual companies by sharing the costs, the opportunity to leverage government funding and the opportunity to conduct longer term projects resulting in skills development (PhD and MSc). Limitations of collaborative research include the reduced focus on company specific issues and the loss of competitive advantage from owning the outcomes of the research. The challenge for researchers and research managers is for them to demonstrate the value derived from longer term, pre-competitive collaborative research. The competitive advantage is not necessarily derived only from the outcomes of the research but rather from the company's ability to direct the research, translate the generic research outcomes to address company specific issues and to implement improvements at its operations. Implementation remains the greatest challenge. In this paper, case studies of selected collaborative research projects are presented to demonstrate key success factors required for implementation of research outcomes. The Australian Corporations Law generally requires Independent Expert Reports to be presented in support of capital raising or in defence of mergers and takeovers. The introduction of the VALMIN Code in 1995 (and its recent revision issued as the VALMIN Code, 1998) made Assessment and Valuation Reports in these circumstances much more comprehensible than before because of its key requirements for transparency and materiality. By forcing the Independent Valuer to provide an explanation of the reasoning behind the estimation of a particular resource asset, VALMIN allows the reader to clearly see any error or illogicality in the valuation methodology used and to seriously question or even reject the resulting value. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Independent resource asset Valuers are the essential link between mineral explorers/miners on the one hand and brokers/analysts/fund managers/investors on the other. The minerals and financial industries both expect them to not use inappropriate or invalid valuation methods and illogical steps within these methods. This paper examines some of the less sensible ways in which some of the main techniques that Valuers commonly use to assess the fair market value of mineral properties have been applied in recent instances. The authors hope to discourage the adoption or perpetration of the æWhat-number-did-you-have-in-mind?' approach. It is MINVALÆs view that as many methods as possible should be used in any resource asset valuation. If any of the resulting estimates are in approximate agreement (particularly if they were derived using the less subjective of the available methods), ie if they cluster, they are probably more persuasive as being the Preferred Value of the asset than outlier values within the Valuation Range.
