Despite technological improvements and better understanding of the hazards, coal dust explosions stilI occur. Experimental explosions in galleries in various countries extend knowledge with the constant aim of providing safer working conditions. The inadvertent ignition of an accumulation of methane is the traditional initiator of the coal dust explosion.There are specific parameters of coal dust explosibility and explosion propagation, including the important volatile matter in the coal, fineness and dispersibility of the dust and its concentration. Accepting that initiation cannot be absolutely prevented, it is necessary to consider explosion suppression. While both limestone dust and water are the chosen explosion suppressants, in practice water has more limitations to its efficacy when related to the degree of explosion violence. These data give rise to the criteria for explosion suppression, differences in favoured mining geometries, and using the same principles, to differences in suppression treatments.

Experiments have been made in a laboratory heavy media separator at various specific gravities of separation using zinc chloride solution and magnetite suspension as media for different types of coals. The results indicate that the magnetite bath gives at better separation than zinc chloride solution. Even though the probable error remains the same for most conditions of operation, the error area is found to have a wide variation which emphasises the importance of the error area over probable error in evaluating the performance of a cleaning unit.

A new low-dilution fusion method which has been successfully used for accurate determination of the major oxide components of silicate rocks, is applicable to rapid, accurate determination of trace or minor eiements in mineral exploration samples. Limit of detection is in many cases less than 5 ppm. Either rapid, approximate measurement and calculation methods (suitable for geochemical exploration), or more accurate methods (applicable to orebody evaluation studies) may be used.Rapid methods are described for nickel in rocks and sulphides containing 10 ppm to >2 per cent Ni, and for gallium. The rarely-determined element gallium is an example of a constituent which may be easily investigatedby XRF using the LiB02 fusion disc, which is a permanent, easily-stored analytical sample available for later rapid or accurate analyses. The method is applicable to over 30 elements at levels encountered in mineral exploration.

With the technique and data obtained in using the blast hole diamond drill for "Removal of Horizontal Level Pillar by means of Blast Hole diamond drilling at New Occidental Gold Mines N.L.," as described in Proceedings No. 133 of 1944, and a series of experiments using the blast hole diamond drill for stoping at New Occidental and New Cobar Mines over the past two years, a benching method of stoping has been developed using 2 inch coring diamond drill bits, resulting in efficient and economical ore extraction in these large ore bodies.During the experimental stages the standard H-inch blast hole was used, but the deflection of the holes, when using this solid bit, either decreased or increased the burden of the hole when it became necessary to drill holes deeper than 45 feet.It was found that after blasting vertical holes deeper than 45 feet, the ore did not break satisfactorily over the full length of the hole; on one occasion as much as 30 feet of bench was left at the bottom of the face, which had to be subsequently re-bored andblasted.As this defect was also noticeable to some extent even when the holes did not deflect, it was then obvious that the explosive had become less sensitive in the lower section of the hole. This was probably brought about by pressure being built up ahead of the detonation wave in H-inch hole, resulting in desensitization of the explosive.Another series of experiments were carried out, using 2-inch solid bits, which enabled a much greater burden on the holes, and the use of primacord for the full length of the hole.This gave satisfactory results regarding breaking and fragmentation, but was uneconomic owing to the excessive consumption of diamonds, and the slow rate of drilling.Further experiments were then carried out using 2-inch coring bits, (Fig. 1) which allowed holes of 90-feet to be bored with little deflection, and proved to be entirely satisfactory as to cost and speed of drilling.

In, one stage of the purification sequence of the zinc sulphate electrolyte used at Risdon, cobalt is, precipitated as cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, which is separated from the solution by filtration. Owing to the method of conducting the purification the filter cake contains much gypsum, unconsumed calcium hydroxide, basic zinc sulphate, and entrained zinc sulphate solution, Small amounts of iron and copper that have escaped previous purification steps are also precipitated with the cobalt as nitroso-,B-naphtholate. Thisprecipitate, normally carrying about 18% cobalt, is the raw material for the production of cobalt oxide, cobalt sulphate and cobalt metal.COBALT OXIDEThe main problem in the preparation of a reasonable grade of cobalt oxide from the filter cake is the economic separation ,of the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate from the gypsum. This was solved by the application of flotation. It was discovered that the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, under correct conditions, would float without any addition agent, giving a relatively high grade concentrate. A plant, was built and has been in operation since 1936. The filter cake is pulped with water and pumped to one of two mechanically agitated tanks, eath capable of holding one day's output. Sulphuric acid is added until the free acid concentration reaches about 3 gm. per litre. Basic zinc sulphate is dissolved and calcium hydroxide converted to gypsum. The pulp, carrying about 2t lb. of solids per gallon, is pumped at a suitable rate to the first of a series of 10 flotation, boxes.. Thallous chloride and cadmium metal were recovered from a thallium-cadmium concentrate by a method suited to the treatment of small batches. Differences in oxide solubility and control of pH were employed to separate the thallium and cadmium. The cadmium metal produced by zinc reduction analysed better than 99.95 per cent Cd and thallous chloride of high purity was precipitated from solution.

Used in conjunction with geology and geophysics, geochemistry provides powerful exploration tools of special relevance to Australian environments. New methods are needed that will confront the forthcoming emphasis on locating concealed orebodies. Deep weathering is conducive to techniques using groundwaters or gaseous emanations as sample media. Increasing use is anticipated for isotope measurements and for recognition of country rock characteristics that denote proximity to mineralization. Improvements in the sensitivity, reliability and portability of analytical instruments will underpin the contributions of geochemical methods to future mineral exploration.

As this is the first occasion I have had, and probably will be the only opportunity I shall have, of addressing such a large gathering of members and of student members of the Institute, I desire to- express my very deep appreciation of the honour 'you have paid me in electing me to the office of President for the current year. I realise also that such selection is a tribute to the Company which controls operations here, the centre selected for the annual meeting, but nevertheless there is afforded to the recipient a great deal of pride and of pleasure to hold the highest office in what is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the most important engineering society in Australasia.The past year has witnessed an unprecedented and unparalleled event in the history of the British Empire, and I think that we must all feel a wonderful sense of proud patriotism; the whole world was forced to admire the public calm and the dignity which accompanied the change in our Sovereign Ruler, and great tribute is due to the statesmanship of the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin. At this time, we should, I think, place on record our prayer, in common with all his people, that His Majesty, King George the Sixth, may enjoy a long and prosperous reign.The meeting at Port Pirie recalls one who did so much for the advancement of mining and metallurgy, especially in Australia. I refer to the late Mr. Delprat, who, as General Manager of The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, had under his control for many years the smeltery in this centre. Technologies are receiving a lot of 'press' - and rightly so; as they are seen as the means for achieving quantum leaps in productivity and cost reductions. A point of concern for Caterpillar is that we do not believe there is enough understanding of the infrastructure needed to support some of the future technologies, as well there is not enough utilisation of the current systems.

The point of the anode effect on carbon anodes of dcfincd surface area. during electrolytic decomposition of alumina dissolved in molten fluorides. has been determined from current-voltage curves. The reproducibility and accuracy was found to be better for cell voltage than anode current density. Results have been obtained for the effect of alumina concentration temperature and carbon type. The point of the anode effect was strongly dependent on both the alumina concentration and the carbon type. For high alumina concentrations it has been found that the anode effect approaches reversibility. From these results it is concluded that co-evolution of CO, and CF. occurs prior to the onset of the anode effect. The anode effect results when the CF, content becomes sufficiently high for the melt not to wet the electrode surface and is maintained because of the slow desorption of CF, and the high electrode potential that results.

Low sulfidation epithermal deposits are important sources of gold and silver, and are considered the extinct analogues of modern geothermal systems. The aerial extents of alteration halos that surround twenty-two epithermal deposits range from 4 to 315 km2, with many less than 60 km2. Deposits with alteration halos <30 km2 typically have well defined limits, whereas deposits with alteration exceeding 30 km2 are commonly complicated by overlapping alteration centres related to adjacent epithermal deposits or other deposit types (i.e. high sulfidation, porphyry). Irrespective of the physical coverage of vein or alteration halos, both large (>60 km2) and small (<20 km2) deposits can contain large amounts of gold and silver. The size ranges for twenty-one analogous liquid-dominated geothermal fields from around the world have a restricted size range of 5 to 60 km2 and irrespective of physical size, commonly have multiple zones of focused fluid upflow. From an exploration perspective the comparison between epithermal deposits and geothermal fields provide the following four important points. 1) Alteration halos surrounding epithermal deposits as well as those for analogous geothermal systems show a range of sizes, although most are less than 60 km2. Therefore, where alteration exceeds 60 km2 multiple vein systems related to several paleogeothermal systems are predicted. 2) Multiple upflow zones are common in geothermal fields of all sizes (5 to 60 km2) and although difficult to demonstrate in epithermal deposits there is a strong possibility of discovering several discrete adjacent mineralised centres. 3) The orientation of veins parallels the principle orientation of the surrounding alteration and where alteration is wider than the vein strike length, this could suggest the occurrence of adjacent veins. 4) The physical size of both veins and alteration zones is not important in relation to amount of contained gold, as both large and small can contain large amounts of gold. These conclusions provide insight into the physical size limits and hydrologic structure of these paleogeothermal systems and highlight the potential for multiple mineralisation centres within a single alteration halo.

Based on the concepts of statistical thermodynamics of athermal mixtures, an approach is developed which is capable of quantitatively explaining the thermodynamic properties of binary silicate systems. Expressions for the ionic fractions of various anionic linear and nonlinear chain polymers are derived. The developed expressions for free energy of mixing are tested by applying these to the system PbO-SiO2. The ionic fractions of various chain polymers in this system are calculated. The two cases, namely, of linear and nonlinear chain polymers are compared with each other.Limitations of earlier models are pointed out.

Rare-earth permanent magnetic roll separators, pioneered by our group a few years ago, have distinctly different operation characteristics compared to prior art electromagnetic separators of various types. Many new applications for dry high-intensity (or better: high-force) magnetic separation have been developed in a short time period. It has also been found that the new generation of separators generally are more efficient with regards to removal of weakly magnetic contaminants in glass and ceramic raw materials with minimum loss of valuable product compared to induced magnetic roll (lMR) separators. The latest development is in the area of production of clean magnetic concentrates at high recoveries. It is likely that the PERMROLLR magnetic separator will replace cross-belt and lift-type magnetic separators as a result of this most recent advance.   The paper will review the features of the PERMROLLR magnetic separator in comparison with other types of magnetic separators on the market and give examples on applications.

COMPRESSED air is held in high esteem by the mining engineer as a medium for the transmission of power. The transmission, however, is accompanied by a high percentage of loss. Of the total work done by the steam cylinder'in compressing the air inthe air cylinder, less than 50% is ultimately utilized by the machines underground. These losses are due to its essential and inherent properties as a gas. One of the sources of loss is that due to transmission through the pipes which distribute the air from the receiver to the various places where it is used. The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3 m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.   The tailings impoundment is built with an underdrainage system that collects groundwaters and waters that seep through the impoundment. The embankment and impoundment are both built to withstand the Maximum Credible Earthquake and the Probable Maximum Flood. Tailings are treated to remove cyanide and to decrease metal solubility to reduce long term risk to water quality after mining. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is utilised to treat water from the underdrainage system and water decanted from the top of the tailings pond and stormwaters to remove residual cyanide and metals to extremely high standards with a great deal of reliability and at reasonable cost. Closure of the facility addresses long term post mining water quality issues, and rehabilitation of the area with wildlife habitat as a priority.

The Groote Eylandt manganese ore deposits contain mainly pyrolusite and cryptomelane with lesser amounts of the manganese minerals lithiophorite, todorokite, psilomelane, and nsutite. The major non-manganese minerals which occur are quartz, kaolinite, and goethite.Determination of the mineralogy relies mainly on x-ray diffraction analysis. Quantitative methods for the determination of pymlusite and cryptomelane in Groote Eylandt manganese ores have been developed, A large amount of isomorphous substitution may occur in the manganese minerals and a number of minor and trace element associations have been noted. A correlation has been established between the potassium and cryptomelane contents for a wide range of ore types. Anomalous calcium, magnesium, and sodium values occur in samples containing todorokite, and barium is associated with psilomelane. Groote Eylandt lithiophorite appears to contain negligible amounts of lithium (<O· 05 per cent).A relationship between the H20+ and the Al203, K20, and Fe203 contents has been estahlished indicating that much of the combined water content is due to the presence of kaolinite and goethite, and cap be removed by beneficiation of the ore.

Bowen Basin coalmines suffer from hot and humid ambient conditions during the summer period. The ambient conditions combined with high VRTs, increasing depth of working and significant equipment heat loads results in heat issues underground. Coalmines operate under heat stress management plans as required by legislation with associated trigger action response plans (TARPs). Some mines also employ refrigeration as part of their heat management strategy.A recent case study was conducted on a mine producing about 4.5 Mt/a from their longwall and experiences summer surface ambient temperatures of about 23.5ºCwb. The expected virgin rock temperature is 46ºC at 300 m depth. The mine currently introduces a modest amount of surface cooling at the portal using ‘off-the-shelf’ air conditioning units. This system does not effectively manage face temperature primarily due to positional inefficiency.Underground conditions remain hot in summer and work is typically undertaken in accordance with the Heat TARP. This has a direct impact on the productivity of crews, worker comfort and also negatively impacts the workforce morale. The mine commissioned a study to determine a refrigeration strategy aimed at maintaining underground conditions below TARP levels 90 per cent of the time.The ventilation network model was calibrated against actual temperature data to simulate the heat loads including longwall, conveyor system, strata and auxiliary diesel fleet. This model was then used to determine the cooling requirements for bulk surface cooling, bulk underground cooling, surface district cooling and underground district cooling strategies.These estimates were used to undertake a total owning cost trade-off for the different strategies. The study concluded that a chilled air shaft has the lowest technical risk but the highest total owning cost due to shaft development needs. Introducing chilled water to an underground cooler via boreholes offered the lowest total owning cost and was therefore recommended.CITATION:van den Berg, L and Olsen, M, 2017. he Wyalong goldfields were discovered in September, 1893, Messrs. Neeld and Sons, owners of the principal mine, being the pioneer prospectors. During the earliest days of the field the ore was sent to Barmedman, a distance of eighteen miles, for treatment at a battery there. The field rapidly increased in importance, and it was not long before a public battery was established on the spot. After some considerable quantity of ore was treated by this process, it became apparent that battery treatment was quite unsuitable for the richer ores, involving, as it did, considerable loss in the tailings. Recognition of this fact led to the erection, in 1895, of plants by the Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, owned by Mr. Walter Sully, for treatment by their processes; followed, at a later date, by Messrs. Neeld and Sons Chlorination Works. The Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, after a delay of twelve months in the erection of their plants, have since catered continuously up to the present time for the requirements of the field.Their plant consists of a No. 3 Gates' rock·breaker, a revolving dryer, a No. 5 Krupp mill, revolving roasting furnace with finishing hearth, two chlorination vats of 20 tons capacity each, "nine cyanide vats of 30 to 100 tons capacity, two Wheeler pans and three chlorine generators. The ores are purchased outright on assay at a fixed scale of charges, and treated by the owner of the works on his own account.

This contribution examines the effect of feedstock sampling before the sorting stage of polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bottle recycling. Batches of waste PET bottles may contain non-PET bottles which need to be removed by sorting. Any residual presence of PVC is detrimental for the quality of products manufactured from recycled PET. The maximum tolerated concentration of PVC in cleaned PET is extremely low, which places high demands on the recovery of PVC achieved by sorting. To be confident of attaining the desired PET quality after sorting, acceptance sampling of truckloads of PET bottles may take place prior to sorting. It is shown that accounting for sampling uncertainty requires that the sorting process achieves a consistently high recovery of PVC bottles.CITATION:Glass, H J and Dominy, S C, 2017.
