The main factors which influence disposal of mine waste under New Zealand conditions are identified and discussed: namely, geological conditions which produce soft weather-sensitive waste, wet and cold winters which affect productivity in such waste, elevated seismicity which affects stability and the need for water rights which involve public participation. The waste disposal scheme for the Martha Hill Project is described, thereby illustrating how these factors influence the planning of a current mine strippings and tailings disposal scheme.

The Golden Cross Mine is located on the North Island of New Zealand, at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 8 km northwest of Waihi. The project is operated as a Joint Venture with Coeur Gold New Zealand holding 800/0 and Viking Mining Limited with a 20% interest. The past open-pit and underground gold and silver producer has been in the reclamation phase of the operation for approximately 2.5 years and is now nearing completion. Although rehabilitation of the site is a regulatory requirement, the Closure Plan has been enhanced by the ongoing commitment of the Joint Venture to establish a sustainable land use for the site by commissioning engineered facilities designed to last for perpetuity. The Joint Venture identified six significant design features that were key to successful rehabilitation. These were the controlled placement of acid generating waste rock into engineered disposal sites; the design and placement of sealing layers over the waste rock disposal sites; the design and construction of diversion drains; the establishment and management of vegetation to protect the oxygen diffusion layer; a partial capping of the tailings to accelerate consolidation adjacent to the tailings dam embankment, and the implementation of a cyanide recovery circuit to recycle cyanide from the tailings prior to disposal. Another key to success for the project involved genuine consultation with all parties participating in the planning, evaluation, and consenting of the closure process at Golden Cross. The local and regulatory community has been widely represented in the Joint Venture's operating and closure plans throughout the history of the mine. Participants include: Regional and District Councillors and staff members, professional peer reviewers, environmental groups, local residents of the valley, and Iwi. This overall commitment to the project has resulted in a world-class rehabilitation program for the first modern metal-mine closure in New Zealand and we believe that collectively, the work done at Golden Cross is helping to set a standard for the success of future programs within the extractive industry.

Located at the southern end of the Awhitu Peninsula, the Waikato North Head ironsand mine is approximately 50 km southwest of Auckland . The ironsand deposit consists of Quaternary sands, clays and peats, formed by aeolian and marine processes. We sampled on widely- and closely-spaced intervals to test variability within the mining area. X-Ray powder diffraction shows that samples contain feldspars, quartz, pyroxenes, amphiboles, clays and titanomagnetite. Densities range from 1.6 to 2.5 grams/cubic centimetre, with porosities from 30 to 43 percent. The percentage of magnetic minerals values range from 0 to 75 percent, slimes (clay minerals) values of 0 to 26 percent and non-magnetic minerals from 20 to 95 percent. Mineralogical differences in the Mitiwai Formation and Waiuku Blacksand Member cause bimodal populations in the density, magnetic minerals, nonmagnetic minerals and slimes plots. The Mitiwai Formation has higher non-magnetic mineral values and lower density, slimes and magnetic mineral values than the Waiuku Blacksand Member.

In tectonically disturbed zones within coal seams, decreases in the amount of kaolinite in the cellular structure of inertiniterich coal are accompanied by increasing kaolinite contents in fractures within the coal and/or rocks of immediately overlying horizons. This is due to fracturing of the inertinite microstructure by tectonic disturbance and remobilization and redistribution of free, fine-grained material (kaolinite and/or inertodetrinite.) Ascending waters are believed to transport the kaolinite in suspension, and redeposit it in the fractures and pores in the overlying horizons. This removal of material from the inertinite-rich coal leads to an increase in porosity (higher free gas storage), a presumed reduction in coal strength and an apparent increased proneness to instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas.

The conclusions reached by den Tex after a study of the fabric of some rocks from Broken Hill have been used to support the epigenetic hypothesis for the origin of the ore, first by Edwards (1959, p. 70) and then by Stillwell (1962, p. 131) in his criticism of Segnit's (1961) views. Den Tex claimed that the petrofabric study provided "independent evidence that the ore, at least in its present form, post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area concerned".Repetition of this claim by Edwards and by Stillwell and the lack of any criticism of den Tex's work for more than three years implies its general acceptance by geologists in Australia. Therefore it appears necessary to examine parts of den Tex's paper in detail to show that his, conclusions are unwarranted. The major weaknesses in his study are that1. the petrofabric study was inadequate to warrant any major conclusions, and2. the petrofabric data allow alternative conclusions.Den Tex made a single visit to the field, collected six carefully selected specimens and presented quartz and· biotitepetrofabric diagrams for two specimens, quartz-diagrams alone for three more and included three diagrams of the orientation of c-axes and fractures in one specimen. It is not reasonable to come to firm conclusions about the origin of such a complex area as Broken Hill on such inadequate data, despite den Tex's claim (p. 87, lines 22 and 23) that "a thorough investigation of the quartz-fabric of the wall rock was undertaken".Den Tex's interpretation of each diagram is open to criticism, and alternative (and to my mind, preferable) interpretations may be made. Characterisation and Processing of Electronic Waste for the Recovery of Metal Values Electronic waste (e-waste), which is a hazardous waste, can indeed be a good source of metal values especially for Cu, Pb, Sn including the precious metals such as Au, Ag, etc. In the present work a protocol for sorting and disassembly of e-waste consisting of computers, TV sets and mobile phones, as well as the characterisation and processing are investigated. E-waste consists of assorted materials consisting of metals, plastics and polymers, ceramics and glass. These components are classified into nine categories. The components, in which metal is embedded into non-metallic base, require complete pulverisation for liberation of the metal. The liberation size is observed to be around 1 mm. Several stages of crushing, shearing and shredding and grinding are required to achieve the required feed size. It is evident from detailed chemical analysis that the pulverised particulate is quite rich in metal values. Computer waste has 23 per cent metal by weight with over six per cent Cu while TV waste has 20 per cent metal with about 4.5 per cent Cu. Mobile phones are much richer in metal content with about 56 per cent metal including 32 per cent Cu in it. Metal content is observed to be more significant in the larger size classes and Pb and Cd are found to be the major contaminants. Morphological studies show that a substantial fraction of the particles is flat or elongated. Based on detailed characterisation, a flowsheet is developed involving dry and wet methods to separate the metallic materials from the plastics physically. It is established that according to this flowsheet a metal rich fraction with over 90 per cent recovery of the metal values can be achieved. Considering the relatively inexpensive unit operations involved in the flowsheet it is envisaged that it would provide a commercially viable scheme for processing large tonnage of e-waste.

The petrology and age of mid Cretaceous to Palaeogene marine volcanics may provide important clues to the palaeogeography of the period, particularly for tectonic elements and events outboard of the Papuan Basin. This initial survey of known marine volcanics of this age reveals a paucity of reliable data on isotopic ages, geochemistry and syngenetic mineralisation on virtually all units. Existing data allows a tentative subdivision of known marine volcanics into either MORB-like early Palaeogene rifts/ marginal basins, early Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks overlying ?Late Cretaceous and Palaeogene fore-arc/marginal basin crust, late Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks, and mid to Late Cretaceous ensialic rift rocks. Due to lack of data, some units are difficult to classify into these categories.

Addition of sodium nitrite-borax, sodium hydroxide, sodIUm carbonate, lime, or sodium silicate reduced wear of forged steel balls and cast iron slugs in wet grinding a complex zinc-lead-copper sulphide ore in laboratory ball mills. Maximum wear reductions were 27 per cent (forged steel balls) and 33 per cent (cast iron slugs) with sodium hydroxide and nitrite-borax additives respectively.Potential measurements of balls and slugs during grinding, and analysis of the data in terms of corrosion theory demonstrated that corrosive wear had been reduced or prevented by these additives. Actual per cent wear reductions were not equated to the rate of corrosive wear because of the undefined interdependence between abrasion and corrosion in wear processes. The investigation verifies that in laboratory ball mills corrosion is significant in the wear of grinding media and wear can be reduced by corrosion inhibition and pH adjustment.

Linear and semi-circular features were mapped in the volcanic terrain of the southernCoromandel Peninsula, North Island, using JERS-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR), Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper, and SPOT-2 multispectral satellite data, digital elevation models, and aeromagnetic data. The mapped features typically correspond to recognised physiographic features and are thus a useful aid to mapping the structural trends in the region. Major linear features exhibit a strong N-S to NNE-SSW alignment, and lesser NW-SE and NE-SW trends. All these are superimposed on pervasive, closely spaced, NNE-SSW and NNW-SSE lineaments present over most of the hilly parts of the map area. There are few major E-W aligned features. Some alignment trends correspond to strike directions of veins in the epithermal gold-silver deposits of the region, but none of the known mineralised structures were visible on the remote sensing data.   The volcanic rocks are Late Cenozoic in age and include a variety of rock types: andesite and dacite flows, domes and tuff breccias, rhyolite domes, tuffs and tephra, lacustrine siltstones, and ignimbrites. Mapping of different textures in the SAR image failed to provide additional information on rock types to that derived from the Landsat and SPOT images. A simple discrimination of rock units based on radar texture is apparently prevented by the complex volcanic geology, superimposed hydrothermal alteration, and long period of erosion.

A thermal neutron irradiation technique using a mCf neutron source has been developed and applied to thp.simultaneous determination of iron and aluminium (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines (-6 mm particle size) on a moving rubber conveyor belt.While the determination of iron with this technique is based on the use of a NaI(TI) detector to monitor the characteristic prompt gamma rays (7.64 MeV) emitted by thermal neutron capture reactions in the iron, the etermination of AI2O3 is based on the use of a second Nal(Tl) detector to monitor the characteristic gamma rays (1.78 MeV) emitted after thermal neutron activation of the aluminium. The second detector is located downstream from the first. Although the speed of the conveyor belt has no direct effect on the iron measurements, it must not exceed about 3 m/min if good accuracy is required for the AI2O3 measurements. Consequently an auxiliary conveyor belt is required in order to avoid interference with normal ore processing.Dynamic trials of the technique, using 1500 kg samples of ore on a 460 mm-wide rubber conveyor belt moving at 1.7 m/min, have demonstrated that the method can achieve accuracies of 0.7% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3. At the present stage of development, it is recommended that lump ore be crushed to a particle size of 6 mm before analysis.In addition to iron and AI2O3 determinations, measurements of total moisture content and bulk density are possible. The determination of Si02 is also feasible, but a separate fast neutron source (e.g., Am-Be) and a separate gamma ray detector are required.

A model has been developed as part of the AMIRA P420 Gold Processing Technology Project to simulate the recovery of gold by centrifugal gravity devices. The model (which is available online) uses the simulation methodology developed by Laplante et al (1995) to predict gravity recoverable gold (GRG) recovery under varying operating conditions and circuit configurations. In addition to predicting GRG recovery, the model also predicts the GRG content and size distribution of the cyclone overflow and underflow. The predicted overflow GRG content and size distribution can be used as inputs for a leaching model in which size dependent leaching rates are applied for each size class of GRG and non-gravity recoverable gold (non-GRG) in the cyclone overflow, allowing size-by-size leach recoveries to be determined for GRG and non-GRG. The application of the gravity model and leaching model are demonstrated using a case study. The simulated gravity recovery and leaching performance showed excellent agreement with the measured values. The developed models can be used to assess the sensitivity of gravity gold and leach recoveries to varying feed GRG content, GRG size distribution, gravity circuit feed rate, classifier performance and leach residence time. The described methods can be used to optimise new and existing gravity and leaching circuits.

The Golden Cross project was a joint venture between Coeur NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company (20 per cent). The site is located in the Waitekauri Valley, 8 km north-west of Waihi, on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the North Island. The mine-site is situated close to the Coromandel Range Divide between the headwaters of the Waitekauri River and the Martoto Stream. The site has a history of Gold Mining dating back to 1892. The more recent mine comprised an open pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998, MacGillivray, Maton and Goldstone (2000).Doug Hood Ltd commenced the first of three contracts on site in September 1997 and was responsible for completing the final stages of open pit mining, landslide remedial works mine closure and rehabilitation works. The Mill Closure and Rehabilitation and Drainage Works contract, for which this submission relates, commenced in September 1999 and was officially completed by Doug Hood Ltd. on the 26 May 2001.This paper endeavours to highlight the project objectives and backgrounds them against the difficulties experienced with respect to the site-specific conditions, the design complexities and risks associated with the contract, from a contractorÆs perspective.

Measurements from an old survey are being machine processed as a pilot project in the development of a computer-assisted method of structural mapping in shield areas. The key element in the system is a field data sheet which requires the geologist to determine a textural hierarchy in each exposure. The pilot system is limited to orientation analysis and utilizes a prior textural analysis, but this would not usually be a problem in utilizing the system ab initio for exploration. A data processing system of this general type offers promise of considerably increased productivity of field geologists by reducing compilation time and improved technical supervision through centralization of processing, and would make structural analysis an economically viable tool in mining exploration and development.

Whether you are an employee, contractor or consultant working in the mineral industry, there are pressures to deliver the best possible performance. Technical professionals are usually driven by an internal desire to perform to a high standard because of personal pride in their profession, but there are an increasing number of external requirements to demonstrate that the actions taken were based upon reasonable grounds and that the work conformed to current best practice. People expect these best practice procedures to be followed and governments are now requiring those tendering for contracts to be registered in some way and to be participants in quality assurance schemes. One is not immune to these pressures just because you are working in a less legislatively sophisticated developing country in the circum-Pacific rim (pacrim) region.   Among the external pressures are the general ethical requirements of the professional body to which the person usually belongs, e.g. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), which are further elaborated upon in various Codes and Guidelines on specific matters, e.g. JORC (ore reserves reports) and VALMIN (assessment and valuation reports). These are outlined and discussed. Also, AusIMM's Chartered Practicing Status (CPS) Proposal is outlined in the context of other Pacrim countries approach to registering of technical professionals, which is a way of ensuring that minimum standards of qualifications, experience, competence and repute are demonstrable to ones employer (or client), peers and the wider community, including government.   Today, in the external working scene, there are many laws (particularly those applicable to the corporate and environmental spheres), with which contractors/consultants and even employees must fully comply, or else face criminal sanctions involving huge fines and imprisonment. These, too, are outlined and discussed. One must be able to mount a due diligence defence to avoid or mitigate these consequences.   Personal liability in the context of the day-to-day performance of one's duties has thus become a major concern to the technical professional and the ways in which it can be ameliorated, or insured against, are described. However, for some mineral industry practitioners, the problem is exacerbated because. of their general ignorance of the extent of their personal liability exposure. This paper intends to address this ignorance and to heighten general awareness of personal liability issues, as well as proposing some simple ways to limit this liability.

Filtration of pulps of varying densities is an essential operation in the hydro-metallurgical production of zinc. The use of filters naturally applies only to the "wet" plants, and in these varying types and sizes are in commission. At Risdon, the Moore suction filter is used for the heavier pulps, except in one instance, where a modification of the Butters-Cassell filter is installed.Filter presses are in general use, and of these, one is a washing unit; the plates, and frames are of cast iron or mild steel, except in one case which is a centre feed press having wooden frames.FILTER DESIGNThe problem of filtration presented itself very early in the history of Risdon and the first developments occurred in what was termed the 250 -lb. plant. Here experiments were made with many types of filters, and as this was the pilot plant on which the design of the 10 ton plant (10 tons of zinc per day) was based, quick decisions were necessary.An Oliver type filter was chosen for the heavier pulp or residue, and a Shriver wooden frame filter press for the lighter pulps.To this day, but with a number of variations, filter presses continue to function unopposed in their particular field; however, the Oliver filter was soon superseded because it was found impossible to wash the filter cake efficiently without repulping; consequently its use was abandoned and the Moore filter adopted.Both- these filters have been modified and developed in many ways to meet the requirements of a zinc plant, but they retain their original basic features.

The progressive development of underground mines frequently requires increased ventilation flow rates through mine shafts that were originally designed for lower rates. Where these shafts are equipped with conveyances running on rope guides, the higher air flow rates adversely affect the lateral motion of conveyances and could cause conveyances to collide with the shaft walls or with one another. Hence the safety impact of higher flow rates requires proper assessment. This can be undertaken by use of computer simulation models to predict the dynamic motion of the conveyances during hoisting. It can also be undertaken entirely by field testing, or using a combination of simulation and field testing. This paper discusses these techniques and makes cautionary remarks about setting an absolute generic maximum flow velocity for all shafts. A description is given of preliminary work done to identify the problems inherent in electrochemical oxidation of metal sulphides, and particularly in the use of powder compacts as anodes in electrolysis. Lead flotation concentrate pressed into a compact can serve as an anode for direct electrowinning of lead according to the reaction PbS -7 Pb2+ +So +2e. No pYrometallurgical step is required, and sulphur is recovered in elemental form.In the experimental work, electrical conductivity of the compacts was achieved by addition of 5·5 per cent of graphite. After compaction at 10-20 tons/sq. in. the anodes were strong and remained intact throughout the electro-oxidation period. Perchlorate electrolyte was used, but fluosilicate electrolyte is also applicable. A sheet of pure lead formed the starting cathode.As anode potential increased above 1·0 V (v. SHE) PbS04 was formed in increasing amount. At 0·90 V, Pb2+ extraction efficiency was 85 per cent. Anode potential was kept low by electrolysing at 60°C and 15 mA/sq. cm., and by improving the porosity of the compact. Other metal sulphides (Zn, Fe, Cu) in the flotation concentrate also oxidize and release metal ions to the electrolyte, which would need to be purified prior to deposition of lead.Power requirement in a laboratory cell was about 0·24 kWh per lb of lead extracted.

Microprobe analyses of electrum grains in some Hauraki Au-Ag deposits indicate that gold fineness is in the range of 500 - 800 (50 - 80 per cent Au), but for most deposits the range is usually narrower than this. The electrums contain minor amounts (<0.8 per cent) of copper, arsenic, antimony, mercury, iron, and sulphur. Platinum and palladium were analysed for but were not detected (detection limit 0.24 per cent for Pt or Pd). For some deposits (eg Waihi), the average fineness values for the analysed electrums correspond fairly well with the electrum fineness determined by assay during the historic mining operations.
