LATE in 1942, the increasing demand for zinc, coupled with the growing shortage of miners and the knowledge that some abandoned mines would have to be reopened for prospecting and development, led to considerable thought as to the possibilities of further mechanization in order to conserve man power. The ore bodies, locally termed "sheet ground," are an important ore bed in some mines and are in the lower part of Boone formation of the Mississippian Series. Some mines contain interbedded layers of nearly pure galena and sphalerite in horizontal sheets ranging in thickness from a thin seam to several inches and is persistent over large areas. This type of ore body offered the best opportunity for study and experiments. The use of jumbo drill carriers was advanced but some doubt was expressed as to the adaptability of jumbos as then in use to mine headings as compared to post and arm mounting (Fig I). Another consideration was the introduction of truck haulage when several mines were trackless. A drill frame, built to carry 2 4-in. drifters, was mounted on a truck chassis. This design proved a failure as it was not rigid and the resiliency of the tires and springs allowed too much play. Long screw jacks were then used to hold the truck firmly in place, but placing the jacks and securing the truck required more effort and time than setting up post drills, so the truck carrier was abandoned. The use of a bull dozer underground had been under consideration for some time to be used in "brunoing" the broken dirt from behind pillars and other inaccessable places so the slusher drags could load without double dragging the dirt. A dozer with hydraulic blade lift was purchased and R. I. Tuthill, Superintendent of Section 30 Mines, suggested that a long drill arm be substituted for the blade, and the drills mounted on the cross member. The hydraulic lift would permit drilling holes at any required spacing. The "cat" was very mobile and answered the problem of a trackless mine. The initial tests showed that the "cat" would make a good carrier, but the hydraulic controls Were not positive enough to keep the drills in alignment while drilling. The next step was to build a small hoist. This hoist was attached to the power take-off on the "cat" and by means of sheaves and a double line of 3/8-in. hoist cable, a positive control for raising and lowering the boom was obtained. To avoid serious injuries to the drillers should the cable break, a safety chain was fastened to the drill boom and hooked into a slot in the back of the "cat" frame. A different power unit was obtained for the "cat," as a state law prohibited the use of internal combustion engines in mines. A custom machine shop had just placed on the market a small hoist powered by a Model A Ford engine that had been very ingeniously converted to a slide valve engine using compressed air. IT is apparent that repressuring of the oil measures is becoming increasingly important to the oil industry, and is a matter that warrants the best efforts of the petroleum engineer charged with applying this method of operation to a producing property. Considerable attention has. been directed to repressuring in various California oil fields, such as Dominguez and Seal Beach, which have served to sell the more progressive operator on this idea and also to keep him sold. The projects that have received most attention are in comparatively young fields where the fluid levels are high, the wells, perhaps, still flowing, where the wet gas production is of considerable volume, and where there is vital need of immediate conservation of gas, which otherwise would be blown to the air. The new State of California Gas Law, which prohibits the waste of gas, has served to interest the oil industry in -means of conserving the gas that is now being blown to the air because of lack of markets. This vitally affects the operator in the older, well-depleted oil fields of the state, because in many cases he has a limited market for gas, on account of the flush production from the more active oil fields. While the waste of gas is relatively small in these older fields, such as the Midway-Sunset area, it now attains considerable importance, since under the new State Gas Law it must be put to some beneficial use. Repressuring in the older fields of California has not received the attention of the petroleum engineers that is warranted by the present situation. This paper was prepared with the view of presenting the salient features connected with repressuring in the well-depleted oil measures of the older fields, and to show what results have already been obtained in these fields by injecting the unmarketable. gas into the sands, particularly in the Midway-Sunset field in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Other projects in the older fields of the state offer some supporting data in this connection, such as the Shields Canyon and the Brea Canyon fields.

The Plasticity transition in magnesium was studied by plane-strain compression of single crystals and polycrystalline material at temperatures from about 20" to 307°C. Reduction of single crystals along the c axis was accommodated by twinning on {1011) and retwinning on (10 12}, followed by basal shear in the doubly twinned volume. Deformation in that mode can result in sufficient independent shears for arbitrary shape change. Fracture in c axis compression, below about 100°C, has been related to excessive shear caused by unloading from the stress for {1011} twinning (-50 ksi at 20°C) to that for slip within the twin (-3 ksi); ductility follows from heating because the stress difference is lowered and the twin volume, in which elastic strain energy is dissipated on unloading, is increased. The stress for (1011) twinning is strongly temperature-dependent but not given by a critical resolved shear stress law. The latter is attributed to the influence of stress concentration from prior intersecting shear on nonbasal planes, the former to the temperature dependence of the preliminary slip. THE basic symmetry of hcp crystals has the effect of limiting the number of independent slip systems and making twinning an important deformation mechanism. The general result in wrought polycrystalline aggregates is a more or less sharply developed texture (or preferred orientation) which underlies a strong anisotropy in mechanical behavior. Knowing how the one influences the other is essential background for the use of such materials. Magnesium was of interest in this work because of the unexplained plasticity transition that it undergoes somewhere in the neighborhood of 200°c.''~ At lower temperatures plastic deformation before fracture in polycrystalline material is limited, while at higher temperatures extensive deformation is possible. The transition temperature commonly determines the lower limit of the range in which magnesium is worked. The limited ductility can be traced to a lack of independent crystallographic shears. A minimum of five are required for arbitrary shape change.' Around room temperature, however, slip on all known systems provides only four.' In each case, the slip direction is in the (0001) basal plane so that slip does not allow strain along the c axis. With increasing temperature, more slip occurs on the ( 1011) pyramidal plane and the ( 1010) prism plane but without change in direction.'?' Thus, that development alone cannot explain the transition temperature.

INTERESTING developments going on in European coal mines look to: (1) increasing mechanization; 12) concentration of mining; (3) improvement in safety appliances; and (4) studies in bettering roof supports and. incident to this, studies of the way a roof behaves under different conditions of support and methods of mining and back-filling. Mechanization and concentration off mining is being adapted to a considerable extent in Great Britain coincident with the development of conveyors. Belt conveyors, shaker-pan conveyors, and a combination of the two are used. For pitching seams not steep enough for the coal to run in station-chutes, the. shaker-pan conveyor is more popular. For large outputs from a contiguous face, the double-unit system of face layout-that is, the conveyors meeting at a common point-is favored.

A study of the structures arising from the decomposition of the ß solid solutions in the Cu-Zn and the Cu-A1 systems is of peculiar interest in the study of the mechanism of precipitation from solid solutions. It is possible in these alloys, by varying the composition within the ß field, to precipitate from the same basic lattice phases having different lattice structures. It has been rather generally assumed heretofore that the type of structure originating from the decomposition of a solid solution— the Widmanstätten structure—-is determined by the lattice structure of the parent solid solution alone. In the first paper of this series1 evidence was advanced which threw doubt upon this hypothesis; but definite proof of the correctness or incorrectness of the hypothesis should be forthcoming from a study of these alloys, for if the structures originating, for example, from the precipitation of the a phase from ß and of the ? phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system should be shown to be crystallographically different, the hypothesis would necessarily be held as definitely disproved. Furthermore, the newer proposal enunciated in the first paper of this series—that the origin of the Widmanstätten structure lies in a cooperation between the lattice of the parent solid solution and that of the precipitate-—which at present seems the only a1ternative hypothesis, would in such an event be given added weight. The work here reported shows that the Widmanstätten structures originating in the precipitation of the a phase from the ß and in the precipit'at.ion of the y phase from the y in the Cu-Zn system are indeed crystallographically different; and incidentally presents some new descriptive information on the Widmanstätten structure from a more general point, of view.

While brass and other copper alloys have long been listed as offering health hazards to their workers, it is questionable if the metals involved are alone responsible for the trades' records of morbidity. The entire science of foundry sanitation is the product of the past two decades; and the best standards now operative would have been regarded as little short of revolutionary prior to 1910. The special handicap to the conservation of the health of the brass founder's employees has been the fact that, unlike the iron founder, his business could be profitably carried on in almost any small and unsanitary quarters. As a result, writers on occupational disease have accepted brass chills or brass founders' ague as an inevitable feature of the trade; and respiratory disabilities, as well as phthisis and disturbances of the nervous system, are also included as prevalent among those employed. While there can be no question as to the basic accuracy of past investigations, there is every reason to doubt the necessity for an undue percentage of ill health among brass molders and casters who are safeguarded by scientific ventilating standards and by improving personal habits of sobriety. There is, however, need for a campaign of education as to the most approved practices and equipment whereby the employer may safeguard the health of his workers, and thereby reduce his labor turnover and increase his productive efficiency. Broadly speaking, copper, tin, and aluminum carry negligible health hazards. The toxic qualities of lead, however, are a menace; especially if scrap lead is recovered or bought for foundry processes. The rapid volatilization of zinc renders its fumes and flocculent condensation the chief problems in conserving the health of the brass worker. The sand and gravel industry is the largest nonfuel mineral industry in the nation. In 1981, the production of sand and gravel totaled 755 million tons valued at $2.3 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 110 million tons, together with Alaska, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio, account for 36% of the total production in the nation (Table 1). In commercial usage, sand applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No. 4 sieve (4.76 mm openings). Gravel consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 88.9 mm (3 ½ -in.) maximum size. The construction industry consumes 97% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see the chapter on "Silica and Silicon"). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material which is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster. Portland Cement Concrete Aggregates Portland cement concrete consists of sand and gravel surrounded and held together by hardened portland cement paste. Concrete mixes commonly contain 15-20% water, 7-14% cement, and 66-78% aggregate. Sand and gravel used as concrete aggregate have to meet many requirements (Goldman, 1956). Premature deterioration of concrete has been traced in many instances to the use of unsuitable aggregates. Asphaltic Aggregate Asphaltic mixtures used predominantly for paving consist of combinations of sand, gravel, and mineral filler (material finer than 0.003 in.), uniformly coated and mixed with asphalt produced in the refining of petroleum. Except for the addition of mineral filler, sand and gravel used as asphaltic aggregate must meet the same general physical requirements as materials used for portland cement concrete aggregate. General Requirements of Aggregates Construction aggregate has many requirements that are difficult to meet if only unprocessed material from natural deposits is used. THE mining town of Pribram is situated in Central Bohemia, on the western slope of the Heiliger Berg, 30 miles southwest from Prague. Birkenberg, the village in which most of the shafts and ore-dressing establishments are situated, is built on a mountain of the same name. It is about a mile from Pribram, is 1700 feet above the sea, and is surrounded by graywacke rocks of Silurian origin, which are intersected by greenstone dikes, and in the southerly, southeasterly, and southwesterly direction are bounded by granite. The graywacke formations consist on one side of graywacke sandstone and quartzite, and on the other of graywacke slates. These last are separated from the first in the immediate vicinity of the mines by a graywacke seam converted into clay. For many years this so-cal led clay seam (lettenkkluft) was considered as a boundary of the ore deposits in both zones of graywacke. The graywacke formation is divided according to its hardness, structure, texture, and color, into fine, coarse, compact, slaty, whitish-gray, reddish-gray, and black graywacke. The, miner divides the formation into four divisions. The first or lowest division, which is in contact with the granite, consists of a fine-grained dirty gray slate; the -second is a very fine to a very coarse schist, white to reddish-gray in color, and rich in quartz, but containing little mica; the third consists of a slate with a contused cleavage, which has a dirty gray, dark gray, and very often black color and is often graphitic in its composition ; the fourth consists of a fine to coarse-grained graywacke schist, of a grayish-white or reddish-gray color, and rich in quartz. The cleavage in all four divisions strikes from northeast to southwest, and the dip is sometimes northwesterly, sometimes southerly, and often vertical. 10.5-1. Introduction. In the not-too-distant past, maintenance and the facilities for maintenance were considered a necessary evil to be given only secondary consideration in the development and planning of a surface mine operation. With the increasing sophistication of mining equipment and machinery, this concept has been replaced; and today's mine managers recognize that planning for adequate maintenance facilities is as important to a successful operation as a sound mining plan. This chapter will present the basic maintenance facilities and the fundamental considerations necessary to meet the varied requirements of surface mining. 10.5-2. Determination of Shop Facilities. The size, shape, and extent of maintenance facilities are contingent on the general mining plan, the location relative to outside facilities, and to the available capital. The type of construction employed is dependent on climatic conditions and preference. HAULAGE SYSTEMS. The type of haulage equipment used will dictate the kind of shops needed. Truck haulage requires entirely different facilities than rail haulage. Some mines will employ both systems, and can include hoists, skips, or conveyor belts in combination with locomotives or trucks. The requirements of each type will be discussed. MAINTENANCE ORGANIZATION. The pre-planning decision as to centralized maintenance vs. area maintenance, or a combination of both, will greatly affect the maintenance facilities required. A single pit with relatively short travel from shops to pit will probably have a centralized maintenance system. THIS paper will treat of such works only as beneficiate ores directly in the mining districts. And when it is said that more than twenty furnaces exist in Utah, about as many in Nevada, five in Montana, and four in Cerro Gordo, Inyo County, California, it is obvious that a business so extended deserves attention. Wide apart as these different works are located, they have nevertheless to deal in nearly every case with the same or very similar circumstances and conditions, so that, with very few exceptions, virtually the same system of smelting is followed in all these establishments. This is the so-called method of reduction and precipitation in blast-furnaces. As the principal reasons for the employment of a blast-furnace process are to be considered : the low percentage of lead in the ores, the high price of the only available fuel, charcoal, and the exorbitant rates demanded for labor. The reasons why the reduction and precipitation process is preferred to a roasting, reduction, and precipitation process are the high prices of labor and materials, and the preponderance of oxidized ores over sulphurets, though in some cases the latter are quite abundant. The weight of these reasons will be better understood when the character of the ores to be treated and the object of the smelting are more minutely stated. The ores are in nearly all cases a preponderating mass of oxidized lead ores, such as cerussite, anglesite, and leadhillite, in which nests and nodules of undecomposed galena occur. Associated with these are : in Eureka, Nevada, arseniate of iron and arsenical pyrites, hydrated oxide of iron, quartz, and calcareous clay ; in Little Cottonwood Canyon and American Fork, Utah, iron oxide, and in some cases a combination of antimony, the nature of which I have not ascertained; also dolomite and quartz in widely varying proportions; in Bingham Canyon, Utah, only quartz and comparatively little oxide of iron, or iron sulphurets; in Cerro Gordo, California, oxide of iron, iron pyrites, antimonial compounds, copper ores, and, as gangue, carbonate of lime and quartz. In Argenta, Montana, occur, besides the above-named lead ores, pyromorphite, and molybdate of lead. The preponderating gangue of the Argenta ores is quartz, and there is here a larger proportion of galena than elsewhere in the West. In most of the localities named, the lead ores themselves contain sufficient silver to render its separation from the ore the main object of the smelting; but in some of the districts, and especially in Montana, the lead ores serve only to furnish the extracting agent for the silver of true quartzose silver ores, which at the same time contain a sufficient percentage of lead to make amalgamation impracticable. They are therefore beneficiated by smelting, although the lead itself has no market value.

RECENTLY there has been considerable interest in the production and use of, extra hard alloys composed primarily of tungsten and carbon. Dr. Hoyt's recent paper1 gives a good description of these alloys and describes their performance when used as tools. There are a number of these alloys on the market sold under various trade names, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of an investigation of the structure of five of these alloys by means of microscopic and X-ray methods. The samples studied were in the form of small tools or wire-drawing dies, which were either purchased or supplied as samples. They were in some cases not supplied by the original makers but were furnished by the agents in this country, and we wish to call attention to the fact that they may not be truly representative of the materials supplied under the various trade names. No performance data are given and no inference as to the inferiority of one alloy as against any other is made K Schröter2 recently described methods for polishing alloys of this type for microscopic examination and has presented photomicrographs of several alloys. However, he did not identify their constituents or describe methods for their identification.

ONE of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and. the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist heat and corrosion, properties which. were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consumption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. SUBSTITUTES FOR PLATINUM During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established. From even the partial data at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time. While the subject is of considerable interest to the metallurgist it is even more so to the electrical engineer and it is surprising that the literature records no systematic and' comprehensive investigation along these lines. Practically all the scattered work on noble metal contacts has centered around platinum as a standard and has had two more or less distinct aims. One of these has been the replacement of platinum by cheaper materials, and the other, the development of materials of superior electrical performance. The merit, of a contact metal has been assumed to be dependent on its infusibility, and since the more precious metals have the higher melting points there has naturally been an association of the two qualities in the sense that the more precious were

It is a curious fact that while in our Transactions there are papers dealing with mining-districts in all parts of the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, there is not one which describes the mining possibilities of Nicaragua, our near neighbor. To be most interested in distant objects, like the moon, and to neglect what lies at our feet, appears to be a trait of human nature. The neglect of Nicaragua is not confined to the American Institute of Mining Engineers. In no other transactions am I able to find papers dealing with mining in Nicaragua, some parts of which are as much in need of discovery and research as the North Pole. I hope this paper will be the precursor of many others to be printed in our Transaclions, dealing not only with the miniilg possibilities of Nicaragua, but with the whole of Central America, where there are vast areas a,waiting skill and capital for their development. Much of this capital and skill should come from the United States in the future, although it is probable that European capitalists, when they appreciate fully the possibilities, will investigate more and more the mining-resources of Nicaragua and ot'her Central American republics. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of Nicaragua showing the principal mining-districts. 11. History. Mining in Nicaragua did not begin yesterday. It was commenced by civilized man when the Spanish conquerors pene-' trated into the interior and forced the natives to procure the precious metal for them. It is strange that the Spaniards did not find more gold, and work on a scale as extensive as in Colombia and other parts of South America. The ductile fracturing process was studied in single-crystal and poly cvystalline aluminum deformed in tension over a temperature range from 295° to 4.2°K. At temperatures as low as 77°K, the fracture of "inclusion-free" material, including zone-refined aluminum, was by rupture (-100 pct RA). At 4.2 OK, fracture was brought on by adia-batic shear. Metallographic examination did not disclose any voids or slip-band microcracks, thus negating for inherently ductile metals any mechanism of void nucleation by vacancy condensation or of cracking due to dislocation pile-ups. In Izigh-purity aluminum not treated to be inclusion-free, fracture at temperatures as low as 45°K was of the double-cup type and a result of void formation. The reduction-of-area decreased as temperature was lowered, corresponding to the earlier appearance of voids. Such behavior was rationalized in terms of a larger increase, with decreasing temperature, in the .flow stress relative to the strength of the inclusion-matrix interface. Evidence for low-temperature adiabatic shear was found in discontinuous flow at 4.2"K, in the transition to a localized shear fracture at low temperatures, and in the suppression of shear fracture with an elastically hard pulling device. A simple analysis for the initiation of adiabatic shew permitted a general correlation of the various contributing factors. It has been pointed out that the duration of shear depends upon effective mass and elastic stiffness of the deformation system. Much information about ductile fracture has also been accumulated over this period, but only recently has an understanding of mechanism begun to appear. Ludwik,' in 1926, first reported fracture in a tensile specimen starting with a central crack in the necked section. Since then, other studies have disclosed that such cracks may form by the coalescence of voids nucleated in this region where hydrostatic tension is highest.2-4 Rogers and Crussard et al.' have emphasized void formation and reori-entation along localized shear bands as a mode of crack propagation. pines6 has considered the tensile rod as a bundle of fibers joined by weak interfaces, which subsequently separate to allow individual fiber contraction. The notion of cavity growth and coalescence by purely plastic processes was discussed by Cottrell: who added that the tensile reduction-of-area ought not to be sensitive to temperature. On the other hand, it has been observed that the reduction-of-area is greatly increased if tests are carried out at high temperaturesa or under high hydrostatic pressure.' Fracturing anisotropy in wrought products lends support to the idea of void formation from preexisting flaws strongly aligned by earlier processing.''-l2 There is evidence that many voids result from the fracturing of inclusions or separation at the inclusion-matrix interface Another possibility is that voids grow out of pore volume produced in the initial solidification and never fully removed in later working. In general, a structure 3f particles, pores, and weak interfaces can be expected, at least in materials of engineering interest. Vacancy condensation has been suggested as an alternative mechanism of void formation for materials considered to be inclusion-free.13 Yet experience has shown that tensile reduction-of-area increases with purity, to the extreme of rupture as so often observed in single crystals. Adiabatic shear has an important bearing on ductile fracture. It occurs when the decrease of flow stress, as a result of local temperature rise from heat generated during straining, becomes larger than the increase due to strain and strain-rate hardening. As demonstrated by experiments on punching of plates,14 a large temperature rise may be brought about by rapid straining. Adiabatic flow as a result of the high strain rate reached in an ordinary tensile specimen just prior to separation may account for the cone formation in cup-and-cone fracture;14 evidence of such local heating has been presented.15 For geometrical reasons, however, pure sliding along the conical surfaces is unlikely, and separation under tensile forces is probably an important accompanying feature of the shear.7 In deformation processing operations, a high shear-strain rate may exist at boundaries between plas-

The mechanics of the continuous sintering process are briefly reviewed and the application of this process for the beneficiation of principal minerals used in making cement is shown. Pilot plant tests using pyrobeneficiation techniques were conducted with mixtures of limestone and shale in various ratios. Results are illustrated and show the percentage removal of carbon, carbonates, sulfur, alkalies, and volatiles as a function of the limestone-shale ratio. Tests with varying quantities of solid fwls, added to mixtures containing limestone and shale in a 4 to 1 ratio, were made to attain optimum elimination of the volatile constituents. Experimental results show that 90 pct of these constituents were removed during the calcination sintem'ng process. The advantages of using the beneficiated material for making cement are discussed with regard to prepam'ng, handling, and clinkering operations. A sintering process for treating raw materials or kiln waste products which contain high amounts of alkaline materials is described. Tests were performed with a high alkaline waste dust mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio with raw cement meal. The data from these tests and others using different halides for aiding alkali removal are evaluated by the alkali content of the cement clinker. Test results showed that the Dwight-Lloyd process could be applied with facility in beneficiating raw materials for cement making. Substantial quantities of deleterious volutile constituents were removed by calcining and sintering techniques. The continuous sintering process has been applied for a number of years as a means of beneficiating minerals for subsequent conversion to merchantable products. The process was developed and first used for nonferrous metallurgical applicatfons. However, it has risen to prominence for ferrous metallurgical applications where last year in the U.S. and Canada nearly 40 million tons of iron ore were treated by grate firing processes. Through the years of process development many investigators have realized the versatility of the sintering process and have directed experiments toward the use of it for applications with nonmetallic minerals. These have included calcining limestone, carbonizing coal, expanding shale, and burning cement raw meal. Today commercial sintering plants produce cement clinker from mixtures of limestone and shale, lightweight aggregate from shale or clay, and calcined products from phosphate shale. The mechanics of the downdraft sintering process have been presented by many authors. In general practice the materials to be agglomated are mixed as moistened fines with a solid fuel and this mixture is spread uniformly on the grates of the sintering machine. The charge is then momentarily directed under an ignition furnace. After ignition a continuous downdraft of air promotes combustion of the fuel and through heat transfer particles become partially fused into a coherent mass. This is cooled from continued draft induced after combustion. Many investigators have shown that distinct zones are formed during the process of sintering iron ores. At the midway point of the sintering process these are prominent and are, respectively, from the top of the bed to the bottom, comprised of a cooling zone of sintered material, a combustion zone of sinter formation, a calcination zone, a drying zone, and a zone of unreacted materials. Completion of sintering occurs near the discharge end of the machine where the firing zone approaches either the grates or grate dressing material called hearth layer. Here the peak draft temperature usually can be noted in the windboxes. The zonal pattern has been illustrated with the use of graphs which show thermal gradients as they progress through the bed of materials during sintering. Fig. 1 shows, in simplified form, thermal gradients existing when clinkering cement on a sintering machine. The thermal gradients illustrated are for periods of initiation, midway and completion of the clinkering process. INTRODUCTION The Overseas Private Investment Corporation ("OPIC") is a U.S. Government agency mandated to promote the economic development of the less developed countries ("LDCs") by assisting U.S. private investment in the Third World. Generally, investment decisions turn on the optimism or pessimism of the private sector's financial analysis of a project, with market price of product a major unknown in a very chancy set of projections. Discussions with American mineral companies, however, show that, more often than not, in developing country projects it is the political risks of investing in mineral exploration and extraction that pose the most serious deterrent to investment. In several of the projects described here, investments would not have been made if OPIC had not been involved providing support to the project sponsors and their funding sources. Clearly it is not OPIC's business to promote U.S. investment in a project which is not commercially viable, but OPIC's programs can neutralize the political uncertainties which act as disincentives to investment in otherwise commercially viable projects. That is to say, OPIC's programs are designed to reinforce market decisions and not distort them. Although OPIC is an independent agency of the U.S. Government, it is managed by a Board of Directors, the majority of whom come from the private sector. This, coupled with the statutory requirement that it be self-sustaining and operate with due regard for the principles of prudent risk management, requires that it operate on a business-like basis. Although established as a development agency, to the business public OPIC is both an insurance company and a lending institution, with two major programs which are available to U.S. investors in the minerals sector: its political risk insurance program and its finance program. Each has been specially tailored to the meet needs of the mining industry. The insurance program provides coverage against four basic types of political risk: Currency Inconvertibility, Expropriation, loss caused by War, Revolution and Insurrection and Interference with Operations as a result of an act of War, Revolution or Insurrection. Coverage against the risks of Civil Strife can be added to both War, Revolution and Insurrection coverage and Interference with Operations. Inconvertibility coverage provides protection against a deterioration in an investor's ability to convert local currency into U.S. dollars. This deterioration can be the result of either active or passive delays. Active delays consist of a change in exchange laws or regulations that leads to inconvertibility delays of 30 days or more. For example, if the exchange regulations at the time of contract execution allow an investor to transfer earnings equal to 18% of its registered capital per annum and the government of the host country later changes the law to allow conversion of only 12%, the insured would convert the 12% transferable under the new exchange regulations with the government foreign exchange authorities, delivering the remaining 6% to OPIC for conversion at 99% of the then prevailing rate of exchange. (OPIC does not cover devaluation risks.) Upon delivery of the local currency to OPIC, normally at the U.S. Embassy in the project country, the insured's account in the U.S. would be credited with dollars. Delays can also result from what is termed passive blockage, which includes administrative delays of more than 60 days (sometimes longer) caused by the bureaucratic tie-ups or pigeonholding of transfer requests, as well as delays suffered simply because the government of the host country does not have sufficient foreign exchange. The transfer procedure is the same as with active blockage - the local currency is delivered to OPIC in the project country and OPIC provides dollars in the United States at the then prevailing rate of exchange. The second coverage -- Expropriation -protects not only against the loss of the investment due to the well-known risks of expropriation, nationalization or confiscation by the host government, but also against

In Sept., 1960, a steam-drive project was started in the solution-gas drive area of the Schoonebeek field. A part(ern of three five-spots and one four-spot was selected covering an area of 65 acres. The pay in the project area has good lateral continuity and dips slightly to the northeut; it is about SO ft thick and permeability increases from 1,000 and at the bottom to approximately 10,000 md at the top. The oil originally in place was 12.6 X 10' bbl. The oil has an in situ viscosity of about 180 cp. At the start of the steam drive the cumulative primary production due to. solution-ga.7 drive amounted id 4 Percent of the oil originally in place. Reservoir pressure had dropped about 120 psi and no significant primary re-.serves remained. Some 11.3 million bbl of steam (all steam quantities are expressed in barrels of water vaporized) have been injected, resulting in production of an additional 4.1 X I0 9bl of oil, or 33 percent of the oil originally in place. This corresponds to a cumulative oil-stearn rario of 0.37 bbllbbl. It appears that the steam preferentially moves r updip while liquids are produced mainly from downdip wells observations indicate that tile steam flows through only the upper part of the formation. The lateral steam distribution in the pattern is satisfacrory since several prodriction wells hardly reacted and, hence, cori tributcd little to the oil production. Production performance and results from material balance calcutlations agree satisfactorily with the results of large-,scale laboratory experiments. On the basis of these experirmental results the .steam drive, together with a cold water follow-up. is expected to bring ultimate recovery to a value of crt leas: 50 percent of the oil originally in place. No serious production problems have been encountered. However, due to mechanical fuilure, two old prodriction wells and one injection well had to be replaced. An extension of the. steam drive in this area is under connstruction. Introduction The Schoonebeek oil field, discovered in 1943 and developed after World War 11, is situated in the eastern part of the Netherlands. The main oil reservoir in this field is the Valanginian sand. A completely sealing fault divides this reservoir into two areas (Fig. 1): the southwestern part of the sand body where primary production is ob- tained by means of a solution-gas drive, and the remain. der where edge-water drive is the production mechanism. In the greater part of the field the reservoir consists of a single, unconsolidated sand body. The net thickness ranges from 30 to 100 ft and the top is between 2,400 and 2,800 ft below sea level. Formation permeability varies from approximately 10,000 md at the top to values of the order of 1,000 md at the bottom, and porosity is about 30 percent. The reservoir contains a paraffinic oil of 25" API gravity with an in situ viscosity of 160 to 180 cp. Initial oil saturation was high (85 to 90 percent). The relatively large quantity of oil in place (more than 10' bbl), and the low ultimate primary recoveries expected from this field — approximately 15 percent stock-tank oil initially in place (STOIIP) for the water-drive area and 5 percent STOIIP for the solution-gas drive area — clearly indicate ample scope for secondary recovery. Because ies-ervoir and crude characteristics made this field suitable for thermal secondary recovery, a hot-water drive project was started in the water-drive area about 10 years ago. A few years later a steam drive and an in situ combustion project were started in the solution-gas drive area. This paper deals with the performance of the steam-drive project, which was started in Sept., 1960, and which is still in operation. Design of Steam-Drive Project, An experimental investigation of the steam-drive process carried out by schenk in 19561 indicated that under schoonebeek conditions steam injection could be an attractive secondary recovery method. the findings and encouraging results of a pilot test in the Mene Grande field in venezuela,i led to the design of a steam-drive project in the schoonebeek field, Pruject Site and Pattern In 1958 the reservoir pressure in the solution-gas drive area had decreased to about 120 psi, and oil production rates of wells in this area had dropped to 7 to 10 B/D. The cumulative primary production was about 4 percent STOIIP, leaving an oil saturation of approximately 85 percent. In view of the large amount of oil left behind in the reservoir, the solution-gas drive area was selected for the planned steam-drive project. The area in the vicinity of Well S1 3 (Fig. 2) was considered to be suitable since it is at least partly isolated from the rest of the field by faults and the sand is relatively thick (about 80 ft).

RICO, in the southwestern corner of Colorado, is one of the productive mining centers of the San Juan region, so-called because its waters drain into the river of that name, which is tributary to the Colorado.
