Electrolytic salt splitting is a technology where acid and/or base is regenerated from a neutral salt using membrane electrolysis. Recent advances in the understanding of brine treatment, membrane stability, and cell design have made electrolytic salt splitting feasible on certain hydrometallurgical solutions. Meanwhile, environmental regulations have made the bulk disposal of salt solutions more difficult. In this paper, sodium sulfate salt splitting is examined from a cost perspective, compared to purchasing the reagents directly. Relative costs are estimated for several regions based on published electricity and reagent prices. During 1986, the Government continued with efforts to ease the country's almost total reliance on coffee exports for trade revenues by allocating 45% of the Government's budget to commerce and industrial projects. The collapse in coffee prices in 1985 continued to exacerbate the country's growing trade deficit, weakened currency, and dwindling reserves of foreign exchange in 1986. Amoco Burundi Petroleum Corp., a subsidiary of Amoco International Oil Co., continued with plans to drill at least two exploration wells in Lake Tanganyika in 1987. Both offshore and onshore drilling exploration was planned by Amoco Burundi. Any oil or gas finds were expected to have substantial impact on the Burundian economy, as a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports.

The Ag2O-mediated reactions of cycloaurated compounds with a general formula Au(L)Cl2 (L = bi-dentate C?N ligand) with thiosalicylic acid, N-acetyl cysteine or 1,2-benzenedithiol in DMF proceeds via ligand substitution of the Au?Cl bonds to afford the S-O and S?S adducts all in good yields. The reactivity of the dichloro, S-O and S-S adducts towards thiols were examined by reacting with cysteine in an aqueous medium, revealing that all of Au-Cl, Au-O and Au-N are labile for thiol displacement. The measurement of the inhibitive activities of these compounds against human cathepsins B and K showed that the dichloro and S-O adducts are effective inhibitors with IC50 values ranging from 0.1 to 2.6 -M, and that the S-S adducts are inactive.

The commercial development of the shallow (2200 ft2 400 ft) Windalia sand reservoir at Barrow Island provided the opportunity to conduct an intensive drilling programme using equipment and techniques designed for optimum performance.During the initial exploratory and reservoir delineation phase, 12 specific Windalia test wells were drilled using drilling equipment with an optimum depth range of 6QOO ft - 8000 ft and a 9 5/8 in by 7 in. casing programme was employed. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release exclusive of coring for five representative wells was 187 hr during this phase.Development drilling commenced December 1966 with one rig, with the second in operation January 1967.As of January 1 1968, 168 development wells had been completed. The two rigs employed are drive-in units equipped with a telescoping .gelf raising doubles mast.Optimum depth range with 4 1/2 in. drill pipe is 2500-4000 ft. Casing programme is 8 5/8 in. by 5 1/2 in. Efficient performance was achieved immediately. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release for 15 wells drilled early in the development programme was 99 hr.By application of experience and further modification of techniques, performance was improved to an average time of 72 hr per well for 15 wells recently completed.The major drilling problem on Barrow Island is surface hole drilling due to the very hard surface limestone combined with complete loss of circulation at sea level.In this operation, significant improvements have been effected. During the exploratory phase drilling, 12 1/4 in hole to set 9 5/8 in. casing, average penetration rate was 23 ft/hr. At the commencement of the development programme penetration rate, drilling 10 5/8 in. hole to set 8 5/8 in. casing, was 28 ft/hr for the 15 early wells considered, improving to 55 ft/hr for the 15 recent wells considered.This programme is a team effort and much credit must be given to the enthusiastic co-operation of the two drilling contractors.The current field record is 2 days 4 hr with a 4 1/2 hr move including the drilling of mousehole and rathole.

"A common problem in the mining industry involves the overloading of established conveyor systems. This overloading can have a number of causes, such as new production technology or a changing market condition which increases demand. An overloaded system usually spells disaster and leads to clean-up problems, equipment failures and lost production. The Cape Breton Development Corporation's Lingan Mine had a serious overloading situation on its underground coal clearance system, and equipment was being damaged and production was being lost. It was rectified, in part, by increasing the coal clearance capacity through the use of booster conveyors. This paper discusses the problems which led to this situation, the booster concept and the installation of the first unit at the Lingan Mine.IntroductionThe Lingan Mine is a submarine coal mining operation with an annual production of 1.5 million tonnes from three advancing longwalls. Coal is conveyed 3400m up a 13% slope to the surface. Designed and installed in the early 1970s, the system's 820-tonne/hour design initially proved adequate; however, by the late 1970sthe system was handling surge loads of 1640 tonnes per hour due to the introduction of new face equipment.The coal clearance system consisted of three 485-Kw, two 210-Kw and one 105-Kw conveyors. Each conveyor was designed for 820 tonnes per hour using 1050-mm, Type 10 belt with a 35-degree troughing profile.There were many effects of the overloading on the system:• Loading beyond the physical capacity of the belt resulted in spillage along the conveyor, which increased operational and maintenance costs.• Overloading of the drive components resulted in premature equipment failures.• Spillage at the drive pulley often resulted in damage to the belt and pulley lagging and, under extreme conditions, the conveyor would require partial unloading before it would operate. This was a particular problem under wet conditions because the 485-Kw conveyor drives were fitted with single-drive drums."

A cone penetrometer has been used to assess the level of stress existing in hydraulically placed mine backill. The test apparatus was fabricated at the mine and consisted of a steel cone, connector rods and a hydraulic jack. Testing was carried out from a manway passing through the centre of the stope. The cone was pushed horizontally into the fill, both at right angles and parallel to the orientation of the stope walls, and the resistance to penetration was measured. Corrections were made to allow for friction along the rods. In a cohesionless sand, such as mine fill, the point resistance should be directly related to the in situ stress. The stresses in mine backfill are due to o the self weight of the fill o convergence of the footwall and hangingwall of the stope. Silo theory was used to estimate that component of the in situ stress due to the self weight of the fill. The difference between the stress predicted by silo theory and the stress estimated from the cone resistance was assumed to be due to convergence of the stope walls.

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and use of a computerized ore control system at the Cyprus Copperstone Gold Mine near Parker, AZ. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blasthole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation and ore zone stake out, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blasthole information being processed, analyzed and reported daily. Copperstone Gold management has been progressive toward new, efficient methods regarding ore reserve estimation, long-term mine planning, short-term mine planning, ore control and surveying. Technological advances, including powerful personal computers, applicable mine planning software and surveying instrumentation, have become readily available and affordable. The computerized ore control procedures used at Copperstone include sample data collection, laboratory automation and computerized data management. These have reduced the time to complete ore control on a blast pattern by 50% to 75%. The final product - ore control - is generated in a more timely and accurate manner.

The combined 75th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 63rd Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 9 and 10, 2002, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Keys to the Future: Imagination, Innovation and Technology.” The meeting consisted of plenary and technical sessions and a special General Manager’s Session. The technical paper presentations included concurrent mining and mineral processing sessions. In the General Manager’s Session, representatives from the region’s taconite operations presented the current status, concerns and future plans for each of their operations.

Introduction In terms of the world's recoverable coal reserves, Canada ranks 10th, providing 0.6% of the world's total. The US is first with 27.8% and the Soviet Union follows with 24.1%. Figure 1 shows the principal coal mines in Canada. Several provinces contain substantial coal deposits, but the largest deposits are found in the western provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. Conservatively, 90% of the lignitic, 80% of high volatile bituminous, and nearly 100% of subbituminous, and low and medium volatile bituminous coals are located in these three provinces. During the past decade, Canadian coal production of all types increased from 18.8 Mt (2 million st) in 1972, to 25 Mt (28 million st) in 1975, to 61 Mt (66 million st) in 1984. About 38 Mt (43 million st) of this output was classified at thermal and 23 Mt (25 million st) as coking and metallurgical coal (Table 1). The three western provinces currently produce 57 Mt (62 million st) of coal - 95% of Canada's total. The remaining 3.6 Mt (4 million st) (5%) is produced in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on the east coast. The majority of western coal (98%) is produced by surface mining methods. On the east coast, though, mining is predominantly underground and only 15% is produced on the surface. In 1985, Canada exported close to 28 Mt (30 million st) of metallurgical coal and thermal coal. During the same period, 15 Mt (16 million st) of coal were imported, mostly from western US for use in Ontario and Quebec. Almost 60% of the imported coal was used for thermal applications. The remaining 40% was metallurgical coal for the steel industry. It is generally cheaper to import coal into central and eastern Canada from the eastern US to augment local supplies rather than from western Canada. This is mainly because of high transportation costs. Mining methods The suitability of mining methods in a particular area depends largely on the geological setting. When a collapse in its services shaft caused rapid gas build up and its premature closure in. 1951, the Blackwater Mine at Wiauta was in full production with significant ore reserves yet to be mined. A total of nearly 23 tonnes of gold was produced from the mine during its 44 year life. It was New ZealandÆs deepest underground mine, producing gold from an extensive sub-vertical mineralised quartz reef that averaged 0.6 m in width. Mining was by stoping between adits and short shafts, latterly with the main mine access through the 840 m deep Prohibition shaft. Macraes Mining Company Ltd are presently investigating the possibility of reopening the mine. This paper outlines a preliminary assessment of the main geotechnical factors for achieving the reopening, using recent exploration and old mine information. The greywacke host rock mass in the vicinity of the quartz reef has been evaluated using both these sources, and the paper discusses how the geological structure, intact and rock mass strengths, the rock mass defects, in situ stresses, and groundwater inflows may effect the reopening and support of the prohibition shaft, the excavation methods and support for a new supplementary shaft, and the likely excavation and support requirements for working adits and stopes in the rejuvenated mine.

Mining method selection is the first and most important problem in mine design. In this selection some of the parameters such as geological and geotechnical properties, economic parameters and geographical factors are involved. The mining engineer must balance the input parameters and select the method that appears to be the most suitable; mining method selection is both an art and a science. Distinguishing all parameters that have an effect in mining method selection and in the determination of weighting factors of any parameter is a difficult task in an ordinary environment. This paper attempts to determine important parameters that impact on the mining method selection and demonstrates the calculation of the weighting factors for each selected parameter. This study has been directed to the research of a methodology for the selection of an optimal mining method. Different fuzzy methods are presented as an innovative tool for criteria aggregation in mining decision problems. Two methods of fuzzy multiple criteria decision making are used for selecting the optimal method with which to mine anomaly No. 3 of the Gol-Gohar iron mine. This paper finally presents a comparison of the selection methodologies and further discusses the most appropriate method investigated.

A comprehensive survey of mine seismicity and rock bursting during development of two sublevels at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, USA, was conducted to better define rock failure mechanisms and sources of ground control hazards. Survey data included rock burst damage reports, seismic event locations and magnitudes and, for the most energetic events, first-motion information. Several subsets of this database, including large seismic events, rock bursts, and microseismic activity near the face, were analyzed. Elements of the large-event and rock burst data sets were nearly independent. That is, there was no relationship between the risk posed by a seismic event and its energy, although such a relationship is well established for the mine as a whole. All data sets showed that certain geologic features appear to control the spatial distribution of events and the spatial distribution of rock burst risk. The data also suggest that, within the scope of this study. the greatest risk of injury occurs when a pocket of heightened rock burst risk is first encountered and that this risk is controlled when miners adapt their practices to these conditions. Recognition of the role of particular geologic features in the spatial distribution of rock burst hazards provides an opportunity for anticipating, rather than only reacting to, a changing level of rock burst hazard- However, much work will he required to make good on this promise.

"In response to the severe drought on the Colorado River basin and in order to preserve existing water capacity to the Las Vegas Valley, the Southern Nevada Water Authority contracted a new deep-water intake (Intake No. 3) located in Lake Mead. The current project (Contract No. 070F-01-C1) includes 5 km (3 miles) of tunnel with very difficult geological conditions and a 200- m (650-ft) deep shaft and marine works. This paper will present the current status of the design-build contract being constructed by Vegas Tunnel Constructors and the challenges and problems faced and the innovative solutions developed to handle the difficult conditions encountered during tunneling with up to 15 bars of pressure.ProjectbackgroundThe Las Vegas Valley receives the majority of its water from Lake Mead, which is located approximately 30 km (20 miles) east of the Las Vegas, NV metropolitan area. Due to the severe drought that has hit the southwest region of the United States, the water level in Lake Mead has receded from its high water level of 372 m (1,221 ft) above mean sea level (amsl) to a low of 330 m (1,076 ft) amsl in June 2015. Should the lake level continue to fall, at elevation 320 m (1,050 ft) amsl, the current water intakes will not be able to draw enough water to meet the needs of the local area. The risk of losing water capacity has prompted the construction of a new deeper intake. Not only is the new Intake No. 3 situated at a lower elevation in the lake at 262 m (860 ft) amsl, the new Intake No. 3 is also located to draw better quality (Fig. 1).Project challengesThe project has had several difficult challenges to overcome:• The work consisted of a 1.2 kt (1,300 st) structure constructed on a barge and lowered 100 m (330 ft) into Lake Mead anchored with 9,200 m3 (12,200 cu yd) of tremie concrete.• The drill-and-blast starter tunnel was impacted by three inflow events, resulting in a one-year project delay.• One of the main challenges was selecting the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and excavating the tunnel with expected hydraulic head pressure of as much as 17 bar (16 bar was the highest pressure recorded during the drive), crossing faulted areas, low rock cover and the risk of tunnel instability due to direct connection with the lake.• Extensive pre-excavation grouting with a constant head pressure ranging from 12 bar to 15 bar.• Structural repair of the cutterhead in difficult hydrogeological conditions [water inflow of approx. 800 m3/hr (4,000 gpm)].• Complete repair of the cascade sealing system for the main bearing and two replacements of the pinion bearings.• The TBM approach to the intake structure."

Since its creation in 1950, the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches des Charbonnages de France at Verneuil-en-Halatte (Oise) has been conducting many investigations concerned with airborne dust measurements, particularly in underground mines. The work has resulted in the development, a few years ago, of a new process of dust sampling, whereby the airborne dust particles are collected by a rotary filter of polyurethane foam rotating at high speed within 8 housing.

Work has been conducted under Bureau of Mines Contract Number HO 357078 to develop instruments for detecting CO, NO and NO2 in a mine atmosphere, using fuel cell technology. The approach has been to optimize the fuel cell sensor configuration for the specific detection of CO, NO and NO2 in the presence of other mine gases utilizing recent advances in catalyst, electrode and solid polymer electrolyte membrane technology. Para-metric testing has been conducted on three electrode sensor cells to define performance and life characteristics as a function of temperature, feed flow and applied sensor voltage. Extended life testing has been performed on sensor cell configurations exhibiting favorable characteristics. Reliable, efficient gas sampling and electronic control circuitry has been fabricated for use with the sensor cells, and integrated into devices to meet the performance and design specifications for portable, battery-powered, hand held direct indicating gas detectors for use underground. Twenty of the production-type, direct indicating CO detectors have been tested and delivered to the Bureau of Mines under the present contract. Three prototype diffusion head CO monitors have also been delivered for evaluation under the pre-sent contract. The gas sampling pump and related parts have been replaced by a diffusion tube assembly in which CO reaches the sensing electrode surface by diffusion alone. In addition, delivery will be made of ten direct-indicating nitric oxide detectors and ten direct-indicating nitrogen dioxide detectors. These instruments are very similar in design to the direct indicating CO detector.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as ‘The goods and services that support the electronic display, processing, storage and transmission of information’. Early in 2002 the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commissioned a study into the diffusion and adoption of ICT in eight sectors of the economy. The platinum mining Sector was one of these. The key findings presented in this paper are based on the platinum sector component of that study. The paper examines the theoretical basis behind technology transfer and innovation diffusion and presents the results of an ICT diffusion survey carried out in the South African platinum mining sector. ICT is shown as the modern day technological tool which is an accelerator of economic development. The current state of ICT diffusion in the platinum mining sector is defined and projections for the near future are given. Recommendations which will ensure smooth and full adoption are presented and justified.

A nearly 305-m- (1,000-ft-) wide sandstone channel was projected to run through the mid panel area of a 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine. This sandstone channel was known to cause serious longwallface roof control problems in the mine?s B-panel area in 1998 and 1999; and most recently, it induced many large face cavities and caused a substantial production delay in the preceding panel. For the two B panels mined in 1998 and 1999, hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was conducted to facilitate better caving, thus relieving cantilever compressive stress at the longwall face. Vastly improved longwall face condition was observed and four weeks of mining delay due to bad roof conditions were eliminated. The implementation of the hydraulic fracturing technique, results of underground observation and measurement, and results of numerical modeling were summarized in a paper presented in the 20th International Conference on Ground Control (Su et al., 2001). This article is a summary of the activities that took place during a four-month period (October 2011 through February 2012) at a Consol Energy longwall mine southwestern Pennsylvania to improve face conditions and safety of underground personnel during mining of the 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel. The elevated concern for safety was driven by adverse face conditions encountered while mining the preceding longwall panel. Many of the problems were attributed to a thick and massive sandstone channel. A joint task force consisting of coal operations engineering, Pennsylvania operations engineering and CNX Gas personnel was formed in August 2011, which recommended drilling four hydraulic fracturing holes along the center axis of the sandstone channel to reduce pressure and improve face conditions at the longwall face. "How well is the Canadian coal industry able to expand in the tough competition with other fuels in Canada and with other suppliers in the international, metallurgical and thermal coal trade? Coal production as a whole decreased between 1950and 1960 and, although there has been a tripling of production since then, underground production continued to decrease until 1975. This trend has been reversed to a certain extent as a result of the modernization of mines in Cape Breton, but in 1978 over 85% of coal production came from surface mining.Against this background, the paper reviews current Canadian mining operations as described in papers presented at the 1979 CIM Annual General Meeting. Conclusions are then drawn regarding some of the longer-term mining applications in relation to the latest coal demand forecast, which indicates a potential Canadian production requirement of 160 million tonnes per year by 2000. IntroductionThe Canadian 'coal industry is experiencing a period of expansion and a new record for production is set with each passing year. This growth pattern over the last IS years has been based on two main markets-the generation of electricity in Canada and the export of coking coal to Japan. Supply to those markets has entailed either the development of mining, coal preparation and transportation systems for the delivery of large volumes of products with predetermined specifications or the establishment of minesite plants designed specifically to suit the characteristics of the coal in the adjacent deposits (Fig. I).Coal is a low-value commodity in relation to its bulk, and the economics of coal use become progressively less attractive with increasing distance from the producing mine. The transportation component in the export trade and in the movement of western coal to Ontario is a major cost factor. In the latter case, it approaches the cost of coal produced at the mine. In addition, the .international competition among coking coal producers chasing diminishing markets in a worldwide steel recession as well as the competition from U.S. coals and other fuel s for Canadian thermal coal have introduced a tight set of parameters to govern mining practices in all parts of the country. Some appreciation of the required changes in mining techniques brought about by declining traditional markets and the rigorous demands of the new bulk markets can be gained by comparing production from surface and underground mines over the past 25 years (Fig . 2)."
