Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

This paper presents a discussion of the factors affecting copper scrap markets, including such items as price levels, freight. grades of material, sources and packaging. Reference will also be made to the effective life and turn-around of the copper content of some products. Introduction IN TERMS OF SIZE, copper scrap is second only to ferrous scrap in tonnage recycled. However, in total value, it is second to none. For example, world scrap recovery during the preceding 4 years averaged just under 2,300,000 metric tons per annum, and at an average price of 70 ¢ a pound, this works out at a turnover of about $3.5 billion, which indicates that the copper scrap industry, or recycling as it is now becoming known , is a substantial one.

Consideram-se custos com energia um desafio para a indústria mineral, pois a maioria da energia disponível ao processo é inevitavelmente absorvida pelos equipamentos e somente uma menor porção é destinada à fragmentação desejada. Hoje, a maioria das teorias utilizadas na avaliação do desempenho energético parte dos estudos de pesquisadores como Fred Chester Bond. De acordo com Bond, Work Index (WI) é um parâmetro representativo da resistência à moagem do minério, servindo para medir o consumo de energia na fragmentação e para comparar o comportamento de diferentes minérios. Estudos recentes comprovam que o WI de materiais em mistura pode ser medido, geralmente, com alto desvio devido às diferenças existentes de moabilidade de cada tipologia. Este trabalho consistiu na determinação do WI de minério de zinco silicatado com elevações nos teores de esfalerita (ZnS) e galena (PbS), devido à avanços na lavra, minério composto unicamente por willemita e suas misturas. Valores encontrados mostraram que a presença significativa de minerais de classes distintas daquele predominante na frente de lavra pode influenciar na determinação de parâmetros importantes para o processamento mineral. By so doing the mining industry is kept informed of the availability of the latest equipment for safe use underground. This list supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953; Information Circular 7722, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54; Information Circular 7840, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1955-56; and Information Circular 7957, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During 1957-58. This list includes equipment meeting those standards that have been revised since Information Circular 7957 was .issued. Schedule 16E,4 a revision of Schedule 160, was approved May 19, 1960.

Hydrogen fuel cells are a known technology, having been applied to stationary (e.g. equipment, buildings, and power plants) and vehicle applications (e.g. transit buses and space shuttles). There is currently a growing need to provide alternate power systems to diesel fuel for underground mining vehicles to improve underground air quality and reduce production costs and greenhouse gas emissions. To date, however, fuel cells have not been exposed to underground mine air and physical conditions. A testing program was carried out to provide information on the vulnerabilities of fuel cells as part of a number of proof-of-concept projects to apply hydrogen power to underground mining vehicles. The fuel cell type of choice for the industry, the proton exchange membrane, would function at the range of surface operations, and use hydrogen that is stored under low pressure and risk. A small fuel cell stack was tested in a cooperative project between CANMET, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, Inco, the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Sandia National laboratories, and H-Power. This article will review the tests carried out to measure the effects from high humidity, mineral dust, diesel emission gasses and diesel particulate matter, as well as from shock and vibration provided to the unit in underground conditions at Inco?s 175 Orebody minesite and Stobie mine. The test results provided will show that the unit was not affected by the underground conditions; physically and electrically, the unit performed without any reduction in operation or adverse effects imposed

Students of the modern blast furnace seem unanimously agreed that they are observing a major revolution in practice. Rather than changing construction and operation of the furnaces, most of the great advances now under way deal with the raw materials feed. Prepared burdens have gained increasing significance during recent years. Sizing, concentration, and agglomeration have all become bywords to greater production and reduced operating costs. The remarkable results with test furnaces in which self-fluxing sinter makes up part or all of the ore charge foretell even greater improvements. Other investigators have reported many of these advances, and it is enough to predict here that more and more operators will turn to the use of self-fluxing sinter. This change in the operator's requirements comes at a time when one major section of the iron ore regions, the Mesabi, is finding it difficult to maintain, let alone improve, the tonnage and grade of its shipping product. To meet the new demands with respect to quality and structure, the iron ore producers of this area turned first to screening, crushing, and concentrating intermediate ores. More recently, declining higher-grade reserves have led to multimillion-dollar investments in plants to treat the low-grade magnetic taconites.1,2 To yield a suitable concentrate, the Minnesota magnetic taconites must be ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh, too fine to be charged directly to the blast furnace or to make acceptable feed to the sinter strand. The pelletizing process was developed to meet the structure requirements laid down by the blast furnace operators. Taconite producers are succeeding in their efforts just when the attention of the blast furnace man is being drawn to the great advantages of self-fluxing sinter.3 The taconite operators are ready with an alternative. Why not produce sclf-flus ing pellets? At the Hibbing laboratory of Pickands Mather & Co., where much of the early work was done that led to Erie Mining's 7.5-million ton taconite plant at Hoyt Lakes, Minn., preliminary investigations have been made. Present Taconite Operations: Details of this work will be clarified by a brief review of agglomeration practice in commercial taconite plants. After the taconite has been ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh to liberate the magnetite grains, the ore is concentrated on magnetic separators, thickened, and filtered to about 10 pct moisture. This structure and moisture fit in closely with the conditions required to produce good balls. It has been found with taconite concentrates that at least 60 pct of the feed to the balling drum must be —325 mesh to obtain good ball compaction within reasonable time. The filter cake moisture usually permits a slight water addition at the balling drum, and further balling control is obtained by adding about 12 Ib of bentonite and 1 1/2 lb of soda ash per dry short ton of concentrate. These additives, and occasionally small quantities of fine coal, are thoroughly mixed with the filter cake ahead of balling. The swelling property of bentonite improves the green and dry strength of the balls so they can be handled without breakage until they are fired. Soda ash is added for pH control to insure maximum performance of the bentonite, and coal is added for more heat in the firing process when required. The balls, normally 3/8 to l-in. diam, are brought to a temperature of 2350" to 2500°F in the indurating furnace. Heat for this process comes from three sources: 1) fuel burned in the combustion chamber, 2) oxidation of the magnetite concentrates to hematite, and 3) coal added to the balls. Pellet strength is developed by grain growth and bridging and, if enough slag-forming constituents are present, by slag bonding. Conversion to hematite is usually close to 100 pct in the fired pellets. Batch Test Procedures: Initial studies of self-fluxing pellets were made by producing balls on a batch basis under carefully controlled laboratory conditions. The City of Chicago has a world-renowned skyline and is known for its provocative architecture. The subsurface conditions in the city have allowed for construction of these significant structures. The skyline is supported on caissons as they are called in Chicago or drilled shafts in other locations. Despite the significant strides the industry has made in advancing the drilled shaft, the use of other specialty geotechnical construction techniques like micropiles has not been overlooked in Chicago and the surrounding areas. Micropiles have been utilized to underpin famous existing historic structures like Orchestra Hall any many others. Engineers have used 200 to 600 kip micropiles to underpin compromised, inadequate, or damaged caissons. The paper will discuss the use of drilled shafts, micropiles, and ground improvement over the last 30 years in Chicago using a curated collection of case histories. It will also examine advancing the industry beyond its current technical limitations using these techniques. INTRODUCTION 20,000 years ago, glaciers from the Chicago region left behind sheets of glacial clay till underlain by dense, over consolidated glacial till below: limestone bedrock, found about 100 ft below street level. An unusual feature in this profile is the soft Chicago Blue Clay. Chicago has been called the birthplace of the Skyscraper and drilled shaft foundation, both of which came about in the 19th century. After the Great Fire of 1871, tall new structures were built rapidly and designing a successful foundation was trial and error. The first deep driven wood pile and caisson foundations bypassed the problem layer and found solid support on hardpan till or bedrock below (Schock and Risberg 2013). Once the drilled shaft foundation became acceptable to the Chicago engineering and construction community, building heights and complexity grew dramatically. As the city grew, building foundations were being repurposed. There was also the need to underpin structures for additional loads and shallow foundations for adjacent construction. Hand-dug drilled shafts were an option for some of these restricted access and low headroom sites but a new technique, micropiles, would prove to be the future of retrofit and hard to construct foundations. Micropiles were introduced on a limited basis to the United States market in the 1970s and 80s. In the early 1990s, the Chicago market began to latch onto micropiles and their use has grown significantly as a solution to the most complex foundation problems a maturing skyline has to offer.

This study estimates costs of producing bituminous coal and lignite by strip-mining methods in 12 hypothetical mines. Basic costs are developed by geographic area, rank of coal, and output capacity. Seam thickness and depth and type of overburden are considered typical for the area in which the hypothetical mine would be located. The cost analyses are based on the use of new equipment, the prevailing union wage scales, and the payment of all miscellaneous costs including royalties, contributions to the miners' welfare fund, and license and permit fees. All model mines are considered to have a life span of 20 years. Capital costs of bituminous strip mines with a capacity of 1 million tons per year range from $12.7 million in the Appalachian region to $16.0 million in the Interior province. The corresponding selling price, assuming a discounted cash flow return of 12 percent on investment, is $5.40 and $6.95 per ton, respectively. For bituminous coal strip mines producing 3 million tons annually, a capital investment of $24.9 million will render a selling price of, $3.46 per ton in the Interior province, whereas a similar mine in the Appalachian region requires a capital investment of $28.0 million to produce coal selling for $4.01 per ton. Subbituminous strip mines of 5 million tons of output per year range in capital costs from $28.7 million in the Southwest to $13.9 million in Wyoming and Montana. Coal produced in the Southwest would sell for $3.03 per ton, while coal from Wyoming and Montana would sell for $1.83 and $1.64 per ton, respectively. The capital costs for the strip mining of lignite range from $6.4 million for an output capacity of 1 million tons annually to $20.7 million for an annual capacity of 5 million tons. The corresponding selling prices of $3.01 and $2.12 per ton, respectively, Indicate the advantages of a large-capacity strip mine.

Process control limitations have led to suboptimal performance of the crushing section of Sishen MineÆs Jig Plant. The performance of the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller implemented during commissioning was hampered by the relatively small buffer capacity between the crushers and screens. The inability to maintain the tertiary crushing chamber under full choke conditions lead to inefficient crushing and reduced crusher product cubicity.Model predictive control (MPC) was implemented in the tertiary crusher plant in May 2012 and resulted in a throughput improvement of six per cent in its first month. The controller was further optimised and indicated a throughput improvement of 16 per cent during on/off testing in July 2012. The throughput improvement is attributable to the finer crusher product resulting from operating the crusher under full choke conditions and controlled feed rate to the tertiary crusher plant screens. The next step is to couple the model predictive controller, automated gap control system and an economic optimiser to ensure maximised throughput and value from the resource.CITATION:Leeka, E K, 2013. This U.S. Bureau of Mines study examined spontaneous heating episodes in coal mine pillars in an active underground coal mine. The information obtained from these incidents was then analyzed to learn which sampling methods provided the earliest indication of pillar heating. The objective of this study was to discover if the location of future events of pillar spontaneous heating could be inferred from the available information. The spontaneous heating-prone area in this evaluation involved pillars located just inby the mine portals. Several detection methods were used to determine gas levels outside as well as inside the affected pillars. It was hoped that, by incorporating external and internal sampling methods into an organized pro-gram, locations undergoing spontaneous heating could be determined more readily. This study found that by drilling small-diameter boreholes into the pillars, then obtaining gas samples from the affected pillars, the ability to locate early spontaneous heating episodes was improved. However, the ability to accurately predict future spontaneous heating events remains in question.

During the last decade, there haven't been any great innovations in the design features of a copper concentrator. What has worked well in the past continues to work well, so that major breakthroughs have been minimal. Conservatism in the ranks also plays an important part. As a copper concentrator is not designed and built everyday, Davy was elated to have an important part in this project. This is the story of the design of the oracle Ridge Project located north of Tucson on the back of Mt. Lemmon at an elevation of 5,900 feet on the N.E. slope of the Catalinas. The Oracle Ridge property, formerly known as the Control Mine, is owned by Oracle Ridge Mining Partners, a joint venture between Continental Materials Corp. of Chicago and Union Miniere of Brussels, Belgium; both or¬ganizations specializing in the non-ferrous metal industry.

Exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) and the postural requirements of the job have been identified as important risk factors in the development of musculoskeletal disorders of the back among workers exposed to a vibratory environment. This paper focuses on preliminary results of WBV data collected for two groups of haulage trucks ? four older trucks from manufacturer A (MFR-A) and two newer trucks from manufacturer B (MFR-B). All of the trucks and their respective seats were considered to be in good working order during the study. Measurement periods for the truck groups had similarities, but varied from 2 to 58 minutes. Sampling times for the older trucks included a mean of 19.5 minutes and a standard deviation (STD) of 6.5 minutes compared to a mean of 40.8 minutes and a STD of 12.1 minutes for the newer trucks. Data collection coincided with the approximate delivery and first operation of the new trucks, and occurred approximately 12 months apart under similar weather and road conditions, and with the same drivers except an additional driver was included with the older trucks. Truck routes were somewhat different in that quarry production had changed location in the time between data collection activities. Overall, the results suggest that the newer trucks may provide better overall isolation to drivers/operators from WBV exposure compared to the older trucks operating at the quarry; although, this will need to be confirmed with additional measurements. Considering the higher variability and shorter sampling times for the older trucks, the results should be viewed with caution. For two of seven trials, the older trucks showed that seats amplified vibration, i.e., a transmissibility (T) >1.0. Seat T for the older trucks ranged from 0.31 to 1.17 with a mean of 0.77 and STD of 0.32. This contrasted with the newer haulage trucks where seats amplified vibration in 3 of 8 trials. In this case, T did not vary greatly and ranged from 0.87 to 1.05 with a mean of 0.97 and STD of 0.07. Regarding older trucks, in five of seven trials, the seat (output) data of weighted root-mean square (RMS) acceleration (wRMSZ) for the dominant z-axis exceeded the action level of 0.5 m/s2 action level recommended by the European Union Good Practice Guide for WBV (EUGPG) and levels exceeded the recommended exposure limit of 1.15 m/s2 in two of the seven trials. The wRMSZ values for the older trucks varied from 0.41 to 1.83 m/s2 with a mean of 0.99 and STD of 0.57. Similarly, newer trucks indicated a narrower range of wRMSZ from 0.38 to 0.95 m/s2. The mean wRMSZ was lower for the newer trucks at 0.58 m/s2 with a STD of 0.23 m/s2. Similarly, newer trucks indicated wRMSZ reached or exceeded the action level in four of eight trials. None of the trials with the new trucks showed wRMSZ levels that reached or exceeded the recommended 1.15 m/s2 exposure limit. As an indicator of driver/operator discomfort, overall weighted total RMS acceleration (vector sum) values seem to show a ?rougher? ride for the older trucks. The vector sum values for these trucks ranged widely from 0.70 to 2.59 m/s2 and, in four of seven trials, showed levels greater than 1.40 m/s2. The mean vector sum was 1.44 m/s2 with a STD of 0.75 m/s2. Comparatively, the newer trucks exhibited less variation with a range from 0.69 to 1.59 m/s2. The mean vector sum was 1.02 m/s2 with a STD of 0.35 m/s2. Vibration dose values for the dominant z-axis (VDVZ), gave a sense of vehicle jarring/jolting conditions. All trials with the older trucks were within the recommended EUGPG action level of 9.1 m/s1.75. On the other hand, in three of eight trials, both newer trucks exceeded this action level with values of 9.18, 12.58, and 13.21 m/s1.75. Neither truck group showed VDVZ that exceeded the exposure limit of 21 m/s1.75. A statistical analysis was not conducted, since the differences reported between truck groups may not be statistically significant owing to the relatively small sample size. Road conditions, changes in the truck routes, and driver/operator differences (e.g., stopping and turning) are possible factors in the higher VDV for the newer trucks.

"After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

"This paper presents the latest flotation development testwork conducted in 2015 on the ‘B Zone’ samples from the Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC). Since the discovery by Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC), metallurgical development has been under taken by a number of mining companies targeting various value metals, including yttrium, zirconium, niobium, and rare earths.Most recent, Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. (Quest) completed a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) in 2013 where the flowsheet was relatively complex and led Quest to explore alternative options. In 2014, the PFS flowsheet was simplified and one of the features introduced was pre-concentration by rougher flotation. The combined rougher flotation concentrate and slimes successfully recovered >90% TREE in 60% mass thus reducing capital cost and technical risks of the downstream hydrometallurgical processes. The latest flotation development testwork focused on achieving a pre-concentrate in which >80% TREE are recovered in 20% mass. Two separate reagent schemes, based on an ester phosphate collector (Clariant 1682) and a benzoylhydroxamic acid collector (Florrea 7510), were developed. Parameters evaluated in the development testwork included desliming, secondary yttrium and zircon collectors, depressants, temperature, conditioning temperature, time, and density, pH, sodium silicate type, cleaning, and flowsheet configuration. Both developed reagent schemes achieved the targeted metallurgy.INTRODUCTIONThe Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC) was discovered after geological survey and mapping studies by Geological Survey of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources between 1967 and 1980. Subsequent exploratory drilling programs by Iron Ore Company (IOC) in the 1980s found that the REE and high field strength element (HFSE) mineralization were within the central region of the SLAC which was named A Zone by IOC and later renamed Main Zone by Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. (Quest). Additional exploratory drilling outside the Main Zone by IOC and later by Quest, led to the discovery of B Zone, which was recognized as the most significant deposit of rare earth elements, yttrium, and zirconium in the SLAC. The B Zone Indicated Resources are estimated at 278.13 Mt at 0.93% total rare earth oxide (TREO) and Inferred Mineral Resources are estimated at 214.35 Mt at 0.85% TREO (Oyediran et al., 2014)."

"Laboratory study of the behaviour• of binary coal blends shows that coke strength is more closely dependent on the distribution of ""reactive"" oxygen in the parent coals than on their proximate, elemental or petrographic compositions, and it also appears possible to qualitatively predict coke strength from information about reactive oxygen. Proceeding from this recognition, experiments were carried out to test the possibility of preparing metallurgical cokes from binary blends in which non-caking hvb coal was substantially freed of reactive oxygen by prior heat t1•eatment under controlled conditions. The results indicate that such blends can yield surprisingly strong cokes and that coke strength may be amenable to further improvements by modifying the size distribution of the pre-heated component and the rate at which it is charred."

The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

The results of tests on oxidized lead ores from two properties are reported in this paper. The investigation was on a small laboratory scale only; no pilot-plant tests were made. One sample, from the Magajupa Mining Co., near Duenweg, No., contained coarsely crystalline and disseminated galena and cerussite, so both tabling and flotation were considered in the beneficiation. By this treatment of an ore containing 11.5 percent lead, a recovery of 79.5 percent of the lead was made in a concentrate containing 73.3 percent lead.

A survey of 120 recent NI 43-101 technical reports was conducted to evaluate the current state of practice regarding resource classification techniques. The most common classification techniques are based on search neighbourhoods (50% of recent reports), drill-hole spacing (30% of recent reports), and/or kriging variance (6% of recent reports). Two new techniques are proposed. The first is based on kriging variance and involves removing one or more drill-holes with the highest weights while performing kriging and using the resultant kriging variance for classification. This technique has the advantages of variance-based techniques and reduces artifacts. The second technique is based on conditional simulation and uses a moving window approach for classification at the desired selective mining unit resolution based on larger production volume criteria. This technique has the advantage of accounting for heteroscedasticity, which is a common characteristic in mineral deposits, and also reduces artifacts since a production volume scale is considered for the actual classification. The drill-hole spacing, search neighborhood, kriging variance, and simulation-based techniques are described and compared for 2D and 3D examples with regular and irregular drilling patterns to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
