At San Manuel, AZ, Magma Metals Co. operates an Outokumpu flash furnace, four Peirce-Smith converters and two anode casting wheels that are supported by six anode vessels. Process gasses from the flash furnace and converters are treated in a two-train/ double-contact sulfuric acid plant. The plant captures 98% of the sulfur. A new flash furnace was commissioned in July 1988. It has since processed more than 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of sulfide concentrate without a major rebuild. The company has gained unique experience in the operation of the flash furnace at high oxygen enrichments with low off-gas dust loadings. New procedures have been developed to maintain secondary material generation at equilibrium and for maintaining metallurgical control of operating parameters. Process flow description At Magma's San Manuel plant, concentrates and other copper-bearing material are blended and conveyed from two separate areas of the plant to three 420 t (465 st) capacity wet charge bins located above the rotary dryer. Flash furnace silica flux is conveyed to a 227-t (250-st) capacity fine flux bin located adjacent to the wet charge bins. The concentrate and flux are blended in controlled amounts and fed into a 168-t/ h (185-stph) gas-fired rotary dryer. The wet charge enters the dryer at 8% moisture and is dried to 0.2% moisture. The dried charge is pneumatically conveyed to a 580-t/h (640-stph) dry charge bin located above the flash furnace. Flash furnace charge is drawn from the bin by two drag conveyors at a concentrate feed rate of 145 t/h (160 stph). The charge is mixed with enriched combustion air and injected into the furnace reaction shaft. In the reaction shaft, the charge is oxidized to form matte, slag and a rich SO, off-gas.

Estimation techniques such as polygonal, triangular prism, trapezoid, isopach maps, and inverse distance methods are often used in ore or industrial minerals deposit evaluation. These techniques do not express the variability of the deposit and do not allow a determination of the reliability of the estimates. However, geostatistical methods can express a measure of the error associated with the estimates, by finding weighting coefficients for a given mining block, and can also help with data configuration that minimizes the error. This work addresses an application study on the quality and reserve characteristics of the cement raw materials of the Adana Cement Factory in Adana, Turkey, based on the spatial distribution and variability of the chemical components (Si02, CaO, A1203, Fe203). The study has been carried out using a geostatistical procedure that is useful for site assessment, characterization, and monitoring situations where data are collected spatially. Directional and omnidirectional experimental variograms of the cement raw material variables showed that neither strong geometric nor severe zonal anisotropy exists in the data. The most evident spatial dependence structure expressing the continuity for omnidirectional experimental variograms were characterized by exponential and spherical variogram models. These models have been used in cross¬-validation analysis, which proved that these models, their parameters, and kriging parameters are applicable for the study area. Quality contour maps of the deposits at given levels underground were estimated using a kriging interpolation technique. Anomalies such as bullseyes and drift were not observed in the maps that were generated. Kriged maps showed the spatial distribution of quality continuity and variability of the deposits. Grade-tonnage curves and total tonnage estimates in the particular grade were determined using ordinary kriging in order to improve the mining operation and planning. Consequently, local uncertainty and the probability of extreme values occurring are tools of prime importance for the mine planning, the optimum mix of raw materials coming from different quarry stopes.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

There has been an ongoing debate on how to transform engineering education to better prepare students for today`s professional world that is characterized by increasingly complex problems and challenges that engineers are tasked with upon entering the industry. Within the conceive–design–implement–operate (CDIO) framework, entrepreneurship education presents a valuable pedagogical approach to foster the necessary skills of the students through integrated, hands-on, active learning experiences. While numerous publications have addressed possibilities of how experiential, problem-based, project-based and active learning can be integrated into engineering curriculum, there has been hardly any attention on mining engineering with respect to adopting this approach. This paper will address the possibilities of integrating entrepreneurship education into mining engineering programs in particular. This paper will enhance and foster discussion among academics from mining engineering on how to integrate elements of entrepreneurship education on a course, program and departmental level to infuse value creation experiences across the curriculum.

"IntroductionTHE PROCEDURE and technique for drilling holes has probably undergone as great a change during the past ten years as any one of the other operations conducted in hard-rock mining. During this period, we have seen a change from the heavy leyners and drifters to the light jackleg type of drill machine; from steels that were forged and hardened on the bit end to the inserted •carbide-tipped rod, from the necessity of providing special bit-end fabrication and beat treatment of shank steels to the simple grinding or turning of a plain section on a shank with no heat treatment required for bit attachment.When the steel maker was first called upon to manufacture a hollow drill rod, it was required that the steel must not only have sufficient strength and fatigue resistance to cope with the stresses of service, but also must be capable of being heat treated on the bit end to a high hardness for resistance to wear and abrasion . Little was known at that time about alloy steels and the beneficial effects to be gained from additions of chromium, nickel , and molybdenum. So it was that the plain 0.80 per cent carbon analysis was selected, since it had already proven to be a suitable grade for chisels, hammers, and other such shock tools. This grade has long endured the test of time and is still used in considerable tonnage today, particularly by the construction industry.As the metallurgist learned more about the influence of alloying elements, a new hollow drill analysis was placed on the market in the early 'thirties'."

The removal of nodules from the low-grade shale is a simple mechanical problem; the question is primarily to determine the lowest-cost method of separation. This report purposes to present data acquired by experimenting with samples of the ore, which form a basis for suggesting methods of concentrating manganese nodules.

Within recent years , people have begun to realize the importance and significance of the mining and allied industries . The leading part the engineer plays in civilization is becoming recognized . However , accurate quantitative knowledge of the industrial importance of mining is still seldom possessed except by those close to this business . It is true that there are a few who go to the extreme and represent the whole progress of civilization as a reflection of man's gradual mastery of mineral utilization , but on the whole , the magnitude of the industry is underestimated . The uncertainties of mining , as evidenced by the variable results of prospecting on surface or underground , in an unknown new field or from the bottom levels of a mature mine , the ins and outs of tonnages and metal contents , the possibility of a widespread or even a sudden change between cost and realization-price , add to its picturesqueness and make mining attractive to some . To many , the fact that results are generally more uncertain and less predictable than in other industries lends added charm . The following pages may serve to call attention briefly to the importance of mining relative to other industries in the United States , in Canada , and in the world . Ordinarily , the annual primary mineral production of the United States amounts to about 5 billion dollars . The average for the last five years has been a little over 5 billion dollars . Last year , sadly enough , it was less than 34 billions . Just now , we are on the decline , and have been for the past two years . In Canada , the 5-year average was about 268 million dollars . Last year it was 227 million . Due in part to gold output ( in 1930 , for the first time , Canada's gold production exceeded that of the United States ) , the Canadian average is holding up better than ours . It has been estimated that the average world mineral production over the past five years has amounted to about 12 billion dollars , while in 1931 it was less than 8 billions . The mineral industries are as indispensable for the conduct of modern society as are those of agriculture , but , in the United States at least , they receive far less recognition from the Government . With us , agriculture is fostered by a great department that is maintained by enormous appropriations , while the mineral industries get but little financial support . In the United States , in the calendar year 1930 , the value of production by these two industries were as follows : to 1 . Agriculture ( inclusive of forestry ) 9.9 billion dollars ; mining 4.8 billions ; ratio 2 Direct appropriations by our Federal Government were 109 million dollars to agriculture and 2.8 million to mining , a ratio of 39 to 1. Obviously this is out of balance to the extent of 19 to 1 in favor of agriculture .

The economic upheaval of COVID-19 forced companies to invest in emerging technologies to aid recovery. One such technology is extended reality, which is becoming a mature and innovative tool. Early adopters are seeing significant benefits in learning, training, immersive data visualization, and remote assistance. In South Africa, the mining industry is increasingly interested in using extended reality to optimize and innovate operations. The Minerals Council of South Africa's July 2021 report highlighted the potential of extended reality's to achieve zero-harm production and modernize the industry. However, the extent of extended reality adoption in mining remains unclear due to limited information on its usage. This study addressed this gap by distributing an online survey to assess awareness, knowledge, and current uses of extended reality in South Africa’s mining sector. The results indicated that virtual and augmented reality had the highest levels of awareness and usage, primarily for learning and training. Mixed reality, however, had the lowest awareness and knowledge levels. In terms of applications, visualization and remote assistance had the least use cases. These findings highlight that the South African mining industry is deficient in its understanding and use of extended reality technologies. Without better awareness and application, the South African industry risks missing out on the full benefits of extended reality. The study underlines the need for the South African mining industry to improve its outlook on extended reality technologies to fully leverage their potential applications and benefits.

The methodology of quarrying changed significantly in the Indiana limestone industry in the 60 years between Sept. 11, 1941 and Sept. 11, 2001. The former was the date of the Pentagon groundbreaking ceremony, while the latter was when the building was damaged by American Airlines Flight 77. So too, though to a lesser degree, did the machinery and methods used to fabricate the stone. The rededication ceremony on Sept. 11, 2002 marked the end of the Phoenix Project, as the rebuilding effort was named. The story of this remarkable project illustrates what the American construction(and Indiana limestone) industry can accomplish when working toward a common goal.

S.L. Barua and Y.C. Kim M. Armstrong's paper is very interesting and can be regarded as a pioneering work of applying geostatistics on washed coal. The density levels used in her study are uniformly spaced, which facilitated curve fitting through a proper experimental design. Most of the existing coal washing plants in the US, however, gather washability data at non-uniform intervals which, in turn, affects the goodness of curve fitting. We would like to emphasize the importance of having a proper experimental design, if a similar geostatistical application is to be conducted on washed coal. We, at the University of Arizona, tried the variogram on recovery (Kim, Barua, and Baafi, 1982, SME preprint 82-143) which showed a similar pattern as Fig. 4 of Armstrong's paper. In both cases, the first experimental variogram value is invariably and inexplicably higher than the second variogram value. Although Armstrong ignores the first point because of "small number of sample points," we did not do so because there were 17 sample pairs. As a consequence, we concluded that the obtained experimental variogram was unsatisfactory and that further research is warranted. In other words, this disagreement in variogram interpretation between M. Armstrong and the University of Arizona begs the question whether the experimental variogram of Fig. 4 truly reflects the spatial correlation in washed coal, assuming there is such a correlation. Finally, we wish that Armstrong could have done a similar study on clean sulfur, which is a vital interest to the coal mines in the US. Her implied remark on sulfur in the concluding section of the paper may turn out to be incorrect because our experimental variograms on clean sulfur at different density levels were even less satisfactory than those on recovery.

The Bureau of Mines, under a Cooperative Agreement with the Bear Coal Company, Somerset, Colorado, conducted a large scale evaluation of the effect of time lapse on roof stability. Time lapse in this study is the interval between exposure and permanent support of the mine roof. The study indicates that time lapse is not a critical factor in roof stability provided permanent support is installed before catastrophic failure begins. Concurrently with the time lapse study, investigations were made of stress distribution around resin-grouted bolts, the regional stress field, and anomalous geologic conditions. The behavior of the resin-grouted bolts, at least in the Bear mine, appears to fit the Coulomb-Navier Theory. Geologic conditions are primary factors in trends of roof stability that extend across the mine.

Digitalization and automation technology offer new possibilities to increase productivity and obtain higher levels of autonomy in mining operations. Introducing autonomous systems into mining is not only a technical problem in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, nor a problem of safety in human-automation interactions. The systems also need to be designed and developed so that they foster healthy and attractiveworking environments. The design and development phase of newmining technology has not been extensively studied previously. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated technology developers’ basic assumptions about humans and their interactions with the technology they develop. We conducted five semi-structured workshops within an EU funded project concerned with developing digitalization and automation solutions for the mining industry. The data suggests that many critical functions will still be under human control in future mining systems. The results also indicate increased complexity in the interaction between autonomous systems and humans as the technology becomes more advanced. As a result, we suggest that a human perspective, based on sociotechnical principles, should not only be considered in implementing the technology at mines but also in the early conceptual phases of developing and designing the technology. This will ensure healthy and attractive work environments in the future mining industry.

At this moment in the history of the world, the all- pervading and universally most important fact is that the world population is beginning to outgrow its food supply, and the United States has suddenly lost its ability to give away huge food surplus to any nation in the world with a food shortage problem. This, of course, means that, all of a sudden, our government must completely reverse its former bureaucratic stance regarding crop controls and agricultural price supports, to out-right incentives to increase farm production and bring more idle land into food-growing use.

The geotechnical construction industry generally considers soil mixing to be defined as an in situ ground improvement or treatment method by which a dry or wet reagent is introduced into the ground and is blended with the soil by mechanical or rotary mixing tools. This results in relatively homogenous mixtures whose engineering properties are improved and are greater than the soil properties before mixing. Reagents usually include cement, but may also include processed clay such as bentonite, when a reduction in hydraulic conductivity is desired, or other proprietary chemicals when chemical stabilization is the objective. Mixing may be either shallow or deep. Shallow Mixing is the term arbitrarily used for treatment of soils within the upper 30 feet; Deep Mixing denotes treatment below 30 feet to the depth limits of the equipment. Mixing equipment may consist of single or multiple-shaft tools having cutting and mixing blades of many different configurations. To avoid using proprietary nomenclature, reference to Shallow Mixing Methods (SMM) and Deep Mixing Methods (DMM) are the preferred terms. Although originally developed and patented in the United States in 1956, in situ construction using various soil mixing methods is more prevalent in Japan and the Scandinavian countries. Reintroduced into the United States from Japan in 1986 for ground improvement and liquefaction mitigation at Jackson Lake Dam, Wyoming, acceptance of soil mixing methods has been gradual but slow. BUMPS in No. 2 Mine, Springhill, N. S., furnished the main feature for discussion at the morning meeting* on Ground Movement and Subsidence on Feb. 18. Walter Herd, the author of the paper by which the discussion was introduced, not being well, was unable to be present. The paper was presented by T. L. McCall, who laid stress on the presence of sand- stone as the cause of bumps, on the value of retreating longwall in eliminating such phenomena at the coal face and on the advantage of wide headings with packs on either side, leaving space behind them for any coal that bumps might dislodge. George S. Rice, who presided, referred to his visits to the Nova Scotia mines and said that bumps usually occurred only where the coal was thick and strong and the roof and floor both more than usually hard. If any of the three were weak, bumps were not likely to occur. In the Nova Scotia mine, to which Mr. Herd referred, there was no material for packwalls and for this reason as well as for safety he had been convinced that long- wall retreating with a small percentage of pack walling was the most feasible plan.

Flyrock is the source of most of the injuries and property damage in a majority of blasting accidents in surface mines. A quantitative correlation between shot conditions and maximum flyrock range can be used to define a "blasting area" in which no personnel or equipment should be present during a shot. The approach used was to develop a model that correlates shot conditions and initial flyrock velocities and permits computation of flyrock range from ballistic trajectories. The Gurney formula for velocity of explosively-propelled plates or fragments was adapted to explosively-propelled flyrock from vertical rock faces or from bench tops. The modified Gurney formula was then "calibrated" with measured flyrock velocities from mining and explosives literature. Charts were then developed for possible field use which give maximum flyrock range as function of shot conditions. The model indicates that for flyrock from vertical faces, borehole diameter, minimum burden and height of explosive column define maximum flyrock range for a given explosive, shot in a given rock. For flyrock originating from bench tops, flyrock range appears to be controlled by the distance of the top of the explosive column to the borehole collar, by total explosive load per borehole and, to a lesser extent, by borehole diameter.

THE introduction of a new fuel, such as natural gas, necessitates careful study where it has not been used previously. At the El Paso smelter natural gas required the installation of apparatus with which no one at the plant was familiar, either as to the type of equipment needed or as to the burning of the gas in it. Observation of existing installations of a similar character and assistance from gas engineers served as a basis to determine what was advisable to use. The gas line entering the plant goes to a metering station equipped with a duplicate system of pressure regulators, a temperature recorder and the gas company and smelter orifice meters in tandem. The Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) concept being developed by Argonne National Laboratory is based on the pyrometallurgical processing of spent nuclear metallic fuel with subsequent fabrication into new reactor fuel by an injection casting process. During fabrication, a dilute scrap stream containing uranium alloy fines and broken quartz (Vycor) molds is produced. Waste characterization of this stream, developed by using present operating data and chemical analysis, was used to evaluate different uranium recovery methods and possible process variations for the return of the recovered metal. Two methods, comminution with size separation and electrostatic separation, have been tested and can successfully recover over 94% of the metal. Recycling the recovered metal to the injection casting process was evaluated for the different economic and process impacts. The physical waste parameters and the important separation process variables are discussed relative to their effects on the viability of recycling the material. A discussion of the criteria that is being used to establish the acceptable operating limits is also presented.
