British Columbia's physiography - the mountains, valleys and watercourses - provides the basis for rich and varied plant and animal resources and for complex land uses. Mining alters the physical environment in a manner that may create a disproportionate impact on biological resources and land use systems. The object of environmental legislation is therefore largely the protection of the basic physical environment: land surface, water, and air. The pace of mineral exploration, placer mining, and underground and surface gold mining has recently quickened in British Columbia, testing the ability of both industry and regulatory agencies to respond to legislative requirements. Some parameters of mining activity have critical significance for environmental protection, for example: the area disturbed; the physical and chemical qualities of ore, waste and overburden; and the nature of materials handling. Acid mine drainage is a particular hazard. Provincial legislation that applies to mining includes the Mines Act, the Environment Management Act, the Waste Management Act, and the Water Act. Government of Canada legislation includes the Fisheries Act and the Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations. Every new mine proposal in British Columbia is reviewed in the Mine Development Review Process, which receives its mandate from the Provincial Environment and Land Use Cabinet Committee. Mexico continues to be one of the main producers of silver, lead and zinc; although this leadership is ending because of the use of obsolete technologies, which is reflected in low recoveries of these processes. The country therefore requires to develop on new technologies in the field of nonferrous metallurgy, particularly be'cause it is the second most important source of foreign exchange. A novel method, presented in this paper, demostrates that refractory gold and silver can be extracted from a complex sulphide concentrate by a one stage pressure oxidation in an alkaline cyanide solution, this is achieved by simultaneous liberation_ and solubilization of the precious metals. Both gold and silver extractions are greater than 97%. Factors affecting recovery efficiency, such as: pH, lixiviation time in the reactor, temperature, particle diameter, pressure, % of NaCN and pulp density, were investigated. A summary of actual plant operations is also be included.

Dundee Cement Company was incorporated in 1958. The equity capital for the venture was supplied by a Swiss firm called Holderbank Financier and a group of its principals. Holderbank Financier, a holding company, is a direct outgrowth of Holderbank Cement Company, a company founded in 1912 by the father of Dr Hans Gygi who is the president of Dundee Cement Company and a member of the Board of Holderbank Financier. From one plant in 1912 located in Zurich, Switzerland, Holderbank grew to its present size of 32 plants in 17 countries, having a capacity of 90 million barrels of cement per year. Dundee Cement Company constructed its first cement plant near the little town of Dundee, Michigan. This site was selected because there is an abundance of limestone and clay of the correct chemical composition for cement manufacture and the deposit was advantageously located near the large population centers of Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, and Chicago. Construction of the 5. 5 million barrel, two kiln, plant was completed and the plant started up in the fall of 1959. After a year or two of the usual problems in a new plant and the expected difficulty of breaking into a nearly saturated market, Dundee began to prosper.

"INTRODUCTION The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Far Site Conventional Facilities are proposed to be sited at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) located within the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The project involves excavation and support of three large caverns which will house four 10 kT fiducial volume liquid argon (LAr) neutrino detectors and cryogenic equipment, as well as numerous ancillary connecting drifts and chambers. This paper describes the geological setting of the project, the geotechnical investigation undertaken nearly a mile underground and the challenges associated with collection of reliable data in a high stress and geologically complex environment. The layout for the new facility will be presented, along with a description of some of the constraints that will impact construction, including shaft access and working within an operating research facility. THE LBNF PROJECT The global neutrino physics community is coming together to develop a leading-edge, dual-site experiment for neutrino science and proton decay studies, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The facility required for this experiment, the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), will be an internationally designed, coordinated and funded program, comprising the world's highest-intensity neutrino beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, IL and the infrastructure necessary to support massive deep underground cryogenic detectors 800 miles (1,300 km) downstream at the LBNF Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), in Lead, South Dakota. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and the possibility of proton decay. Neutrinos created by the LBNF beamline will travel on the 1,300 km (800 mi) path shown in Figure 1 leading straight through the earth's crust to intercept DUNE's massive, cutting-edge neutrino detector at the Sanford Lab. No tunnel is needed as neutrinos pass easily through soil and rock rarely interacting with the matter. The DUNE far detector will consist of four modules, each of which will be housed in a cryostat containing 17,000 metric tons of liquid argon target material, providing a 10kT fiducial volume. "A wind tunnel was designed to examine air flow, heat transfer and layering near an active fire at a working face. This tunnel simulates an active entry in an underground coal mine including an attached cross-cut of similar dimensions. A steel rectangular duct 1 ft. (0.305 m) tall, 3 ft. (0.914 m) wide and 10 ft. (3.05 m) long composes the main body of the tunnel and represents a mine entry. Air flow is generated by an exhausting centrifugal fan attached to one end of the crosscut. This fan was sized to supply air velocities based on Froude scaling. A 6 in. (15.25 cm) propane burner is used to simulate fires of various heat release rates at the working face. Thermocouples are used to map heat layering in the tunnel. Ports are installed for the introduction of tracer gases into and from sampling the system. Barometric, differential pressure, and temperature sensors are also included to monitor environmental conditions. Details about the design and testing of the system are presented including an overview of how the tunnel was scaled to accurately represent fire and flow phenomena. Finally, the proposed use of the tunnel for better understanding of mine fire phenomena and prevention is given. INTRODUCTION Fires in underground mines have been a concern since the dawn of mining. While technological advancements, regulations and best practices have improved both fire detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to represent high risk events. From 2006 through 2015, fires accounted for 1.06% of fatalities in underground coal mines and 0.85 percent of fatalities in all underground mines in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006 to 2015). In addition to the risk of loss of life, mine fires can cause millions of dollars in equipment damages and lost production revenue. Extensive research has been conducted on how fires occur and spread in underground mines. In addition to testing conducted by government agencies such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) (e.g.(Liming, 2006), researchers like Verakis and Dalzell (Verakis, 1988) and Lowndes, et. al. (Lowndes, 2004) have furthered this field by studying ignitions and propagation of conveyor belt fires. While the studies of belt fires in mines are extensive, studies focused on fires at the working face are few in number. The particularly confined space and limited access to a working face, coupled with less robust, temporary ventilation controls create a unique environment that warrants special attention. Separate from studies on mine fires, the use of tracer gases to characterize flow patterns in normal mining ventilation is well established. In 1982, Timko and Thimons (Timko, 1982) outlined current and future applications of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). However, little experimentation has been conducted to study specifically how tracer gases might be used to evaluate active mine fires and the fires’ effect on the surrounding mine environment (e.g.(Lindsay, 2014). In order to better understand the dynamics of smoke layering from a fire in an enclosed space, a small-scale apparatus was designed to map smoke layering and to examine other aspects of fire behavior at a working face. In addition to studying smoke flow around an active fire, experiments will be conducted using tracer gases in order to determine how they might be used to evaluate an underground fire."

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.'s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation's intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina's coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). The R-N Process is an outgrowth of the development by the National Lead Company's Norwegian subsidiary Titania A/S, of a process for producing metallic iron and a high titanium content co-product from ilmenite. Development of the process for the treatment of iron ores was continued as a joint project of the Republic Steel Corporation and the National Lead Company in 1953. More recently in July, 1957, the R-N Corporation was created by these two companies to undertake the commercial promotion of the results of this joint project. This paper has been prepared with the permission and encouragement of these three companies. The R-N process has as its objective the making of metallic iron from iron ores or iron ore concentrates. The general principles of the process have already been disclosed in technical papers and patents. In general the process comprises the following steps: 1. Iron oxide in crushed natural iron ores or iron ore concentrates is reduced to about 95% metallic iron, without fusion in a rotary kiln in the presence of solid carbonaceous fuel,*such as, coke or char, limestone and combustible gases. 2. The kiln discharge, consisting of metallized ore, coke, lime and coke ashes, is cooled. The excess coke is regenerated and recycled to the kiln feed.

As part of its continuing research on selective mining, the Bureau of Mines has made progress toward developing a tool capable of remotely extracting hard minerals through a borehole. As the successor to the successful borehole miner, which extracted soft materials through a straight borehole, this new device has several innovative features: 1) it can propel itself in and out of an 8-inch borehole; 2) it can cut hard rock with an abrasive jet and transport the cuttings to the surface; and 3) it can negotiate deviated boreholes--the feature that enables it to follow a vein and extract only the values. This paper describes the development and feature testing of the reamer/miner.

The Inter-Island Tunnel is one of two undersea tunnels which are part of the Boston Harbor Clean-Up Program. The tunnel is 7.7 km (25,160 ft) long, bored to a 4.3 m (14 ft) diameter in the Cambridge Argillite Formation and was finished to a 3.5 m (11.5 ft) diameter final concrete lining. The owner is the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) who is a regional authority responsible for overall design and construction. The tunnel's primary purpose is the transport of untreated effluent from Nut Island facility in Quincy, MA to the new treatment plant at Deer Island. Two sludge lines are installed for the transport of sludge from Deer Island to Nut Island. During construction the contractor encountered fault zones, fractured strata, and soft ground tunnel sections which liberated more ground water than was originally anticipated by the project designer. Ground water was controlled during mining and the placing of the final lining. The final lining of cast-in-place concrete had to be backfill grouted to cut off water inflows and provide contact for equal tunnel loading which is critical in long-term design. This paper deals with an engineered backfill grouting system which was the first of its type to be used in North America. It discusses the geological conditions encountered, the design criteria used in the evaluation process, and an indepth review of the various system components. It demonstrates how contractors can use knowledgeable and professional industry suppliers to solve difficult construction problems.

As the size of the mills get larger and the liners get heavier, a better means had to be found to handle liner replacement. McLellan Industries is famous for their innovative ideas and was called upon by an engineering company to develop a mill liner crane. The first crane was developed for Similkameen about 1969 to serve a 32' 0 x 14' Long SAG Mill. The next was Island Copper in Port Hardy, B.c., the same size as Similkameen in 1970. At that time, we took existing hydraulic cranes and modified them to meet the mill configuration. In 1973, we developed a completely new approach for the Southern Peru copper mine at Tacna, Peru for a Ball Mill, size 16'-6" 0 X 19' Long. Each installation required a design study to meet the change in mill size, trunnion size, elevation of floor to feed trunnion, area at the feed or discharge end of the mill. We have supplied self-propelled units as well as lift in. When there is no room at the feed end and if the mill has a trunnion overflow discharge, we have the mill supplier provide a structural frame to span the sump and move the mill liner handier into position with the use of the overhead crane or a mobile crane.

It is a generally accepted and widely discussed fact that the world in general, and the United States in particular, face a shortage of energy at the present time which will become worse in the future. There is, however, no sign of a similar concensus as to the actions which would prevent or overcome this expected shortage. An immense variety of solutions has, however, been put forward, ranging from the purely political to the outer fringes of sophisticated technology. One resource which surprisingly is often only cursorily included in this discussion is the immense known petroleum reserve lying within the United States. When this subject is discussed, indeed, it is usually in the context of the improvements in production or new discovery rate that could be expected to result from possible politico-economic actions that would raise the real price obtained for domestic crude. This interest in the potential for improved domestic production is undoubtedly justified, but very little attention is normally drawn to the fact that even under the most favorable policy framework the majority of the oil that has been, or will be, discovered will remain in the ground due to the inherent limitations of production through surface wells.

Operators of underground coal mine shuttle cars are exposed to numerous hazards including noise, dust and musculoskeletal trauma. The repetitive nature of shuttle car operation leads to fatigue-related incidents and soft tissue injuries. The poor visibility conditions, and dust and noise increase the occupational hazards to the operator, as well to other miners. To reduce the risks for all miners, towards providing a safer working environment for all workers, the introduction of autonomous shuttle cars is essential. This paper introduces a project to demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating autonomous shuttle cars in the underground coal mining cycle. The autonomous shuttle car will be able to localize itself, to map its surroundings and to navigate in an underground GPS-denied environment. It will also navigate efficiently by fusing different on-board sensor modalities, autonomously planning the optimum path and traversing around the mine while avoiding collisions with humans and other static and dynamic obstacles. This will be achieved by exploring and testing different state-of-the-art techniques and off-the-shelf components, and integrating them into existing equipment, i.e., retrofitting an actual shuttle car. Moreover, a modified mining system will be demonstrated which will incorporate the autonomous shuttle car, capable of making real-time decisions, into the mining cycle. The system will regulate the interactions between the autonomous machinery and the human dynamic, with emphasis given to the safety of the workers, and enable the real-time, remote supervision of the mining process. The focus will be on coal mines, where the room and pillar mining method is used. INTRODUCTION The growing demand for mineral supplies combined with the steady decline in the available surface reserves has driven the mining industry to mine deeper underground deposits. These deposits are difficult to access, and the environment may be hazardous to mine personnel (e.g., increased heat, difficult ventilation conditions, etc.). Moreover, current mining methods expose the miners to numerous occupational hazards such as working in the proximity of heavy mining equipment, possible roof falls, as well as noise and dust. In recent decades, the utilization of autonomous machines has evolved in the mining industry to provide increased health and safety to mine personnel and reduce their exposure to adverse conditions. Automation aims to remove the workers from the hazardous conditions which may be present in an active mining area and place them to a more comfortable and safer environment at a distance from the active mining face. Examples of incorporation of autonomous machinery in the mining industry include the fleet of more than 100 autonomous mine trucks that are employed at the Rio Tinto’s iron ore mines in Western Australia for material haulage. There are also semi-autonomous, teleoperated LHD machines employed at several mines around the world (e.g., Sweden, USA, China). However, the operation of the autonomous machinery in these cases is either partial (semi-autonomous, teleoperated vehicles) and of small-scale or occurs at surface mines where GPS significantly facilitates the autonomous navigation of them.

Introduction A section of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 specifies the procedure for areas the US Bureau of Land Management manages that have wilderness qualities. In part, FLPMA specifies that within 15 years of its approval, the Secretary of the Interior shall review roadless areas of 20 km2 (5,000 acres) or more and roadless islands of public lands identified during the inventory as having wilderness characteristics described in the Wilderness Act of 1964. Further, the Secretary shall report to the President his recommendation as to the suitability of each area or island for preservation as wilderness. However, before any recommendations for, wilderness designation, mineral surveys shall be conducted by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines to determine if any mineral values are present. And finally, a Presidential recommendation for wilderness designation becomes effective only if so provided by an Act of Congress. BLM Inventory Procedures To fulfill these legal requirements, BLM is inventorying the land it manages for wilderness qualities. Since the law sets special provisions for Alaska, BLM included in its inventory only the public lands it manages in the conterminous US. In 1980, after public input, BLM picked 967 areas to be considered as Wilderness Study Areas. All of the selected WSAs are in 11 western states and the areas total about 97,128 km2 (24 million acres). From these 967 areas, through its multiple-use planning system, BLM is making initial recommendations of areas to be considered suitable for preservation as wilderness. Those WSAs that BLM initially considers suitable for wilderness preservation will have mineral surveys conducted by the USGS and the USBM, to determine mineral values. Based on these mineral surveys and other resources information including wilderness qualities, the Interior Secretary will report to the President his recommendations on the WSAs suitable for wilderness preservation. To make the initial recommendation of suitability, BLM managers will need information about geology, energy, and mineral (GEM) resources as well as information about other resources. BLM has begun a GEM assessment program to provide its managers with that information. This program is designed to provide information for a WSA suitability decision process that aims to supply minimum necessary GEM information. In essence, the program will provide preliminary assessment of the mineral potential for each WSA. Assessing the WSAs To accomplish this, a two-phase program was designed. In phase one, only existing data are collected and used. In phase two, new data are generated and added to existing data. Phase two begins only if BLM geologists, mining engineers, or managers consider the information provided in phase one as inadequate. This avoids unnecessary work and expenses and allows the program to proceed without undue delay. Figure 1 shows the two-phase process, including BLM's GEM in-

A multi-lift benching cut-and-fill mining method was adopted at Asamera Minerals (U. S.), Inc.'s Cannon Mine to balance the goals of high productivity and near 100 percent recovery with the need to minimize subsidence. High strength backfill was required to provide effective long-term overburden support and safe working conditions during the pillar recovery operations. Operational designs were evaluated using numerical modeling to predict global mine stability and backfill strength requirements. These models incorporated sequential mining of primary stopes, backfilling of primary stopes and recovery of pillars, and have been transferred to the mine operations group for use in evaluating different production sequences. The modeling has provided a better understanding of the structural response of the mine to excavation of the primary stopes and removal of the pillars. Predictions about the transfer of overburden weight to the abutments, pillars and cemented fill pillars have provided a criterion to evaluate mining plans and production sequence. Comparison of these predictions with actual mine structural performance has developed confidence in the design of the mining method and in the geomechanical design methods being employed. Primary mining of the B-North zone is nearly complete, and the stopes have been generally stable, as projected in the original design. Radon in the Environment Radon, as a natural nobel gas, can be detected nearly everywhere in the environment as a decay product of ubiquitous uranium. As it is emanated from soil and rocks measurable concentrations have been found at the surface of soils and in even higher concentrations in enclosed spaces like, for example, mines and buildings. While above soil surface activities caused by radon have been found in an order of magnitude of up to 1 pCi/l (Weigel, F. 1978), concentrations in enclosed spaces and mines are higher because of the lack of atmospheric circulation. Beside air circulation the relevant figure depends on the Ra226-concentration in the surrounding rocks or building material, as well as on emanation coefficient and the diffusion coefficient. While representative Rn222concentrations in well ventilated buildings are reported to be in an order of magnitude of 1 pCi/l maximum values up to one order of magnitude higher have been found in badly ventilated brick buildings (Ettenhuber, E., Lehmann, R., Clajus, P., 1978) (Aitken, J.H., et al., 1977). Just now it was stated that the reduced air circulation due to German legal regulations on energy conservation will increase radon exposure of the public considerably (Jacobi, W., 1979). Radon in Mines Radon exposure of workers is, of course, a matter of concern in uranium ore mines where relatively high concentrations of the uranium to be mined are present. Measures to protect workers' health have been implemented, based on experience on dose-effect relationship. They serve to meet exposure standards by limiting inhalation of radioactive particles, in reducing radon concentrations or in limiting working hours. Both improved measuring devices and capacity as well as the lower discrimination threshold enable to measure radon concentrations in other mines, e.g. in coal mines. It is known that radioactivity in coal is small compared with that in other minerals and even soil, rocks. Nevertheless, radioactive elements were identified in coal and so the question was whether the concentrations of radon in coal mines might be a subject of concern. The problems encountered when measuring radon in coal mines are described below, as the measuring device has to be flame proofed which is an important additional requirement. Measured radon concentrations in British coal mines have already been published (Duggan, M.J., Howell, D.M., Soilleux, P.J., 1968 (Dungey, C.J., Hore, J., Walter, M.D., 1978). The authors found concentrations of up to 14 pCi/l in Cornish mines. In most cases the values were in the order of 2 pCi/l. These results were consistent with measurements reported from U.S.-coal mines (Lucas, H.F., Gabrush, A.F., 1966). Such concentrations of radon were not considered to represent a hazard for British miners (Ogden, T.L., 1974). In Germany, too, first measurements have been carried out in five coal mines in the Saarland in the 60's. Air samples were taken at different places in the coal mines, dried, fed to an ionisation cell and measured by a device including reference cells. Samples taken at ventilated places showed radon concentrations consistent with the lower British results. They all kept within the standards of the first German regulation on protection against radiation. Measuring the radon daughters was renounced because of the relatively low radon concentrations and the requirements for flame proofness in coal mines. Moreover, it can be ascertained that because of the effective ventilation the disequilibrium factor between the decay products and the radon concentration remains far below the value of one (Muth, H., 1978) (Keller, G.). In 1979 the committee on mine safety and health protection in coal and other mines of the EEC proposed to have measured and evaluated radon concentrations in European coal mines to find out whether they complied with international standards. Great Britain and Germany agreed to this proposal and by commissioning such measurements to scientific institutes complied with the request to harmonize the methods used. In the Federal Republic of Germany, e.g. Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse (WBK) and Staatliches Materialprüfungsamt; Dortmund (MPA) were requested to carry out the measurements in coal mines of the Ruhr coalfield whereas Saarberg Interplan was responsible for the Saar coalfield. In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration.

The Malana Hydroelectric Project is a private development located in HimachalPradesh State, India that was commissioned in June 2001. The plant was built and is owned by the Malana Power Company, a subsidiary of the Bhilwara Group of New Delhi. With a total head of 400 m and nominal capacity of 86 MW, the plant is capable of generating 360 GWh annually. The 3,1 km long, 4,0 m diameter power tunnel was designed to be excavated by conventional drill and blast methods. Contrary to traditional practice in India for pressure tunnels of providing a concrete lining, the Malana tunnel was finished mainly with shotcrete. In this way, the tunnel was completed in a period of18 months, a record for recent projects in the Himalayas, and at a cost substantially below that of conventionally lined tunnels. An interesting aspect of the project was the design of the steel tunnel liner linking the power tunnel to the penstock. The length of the liner was fixed finally on the basis of in-situ testing using both hydraulic jacking and doorstopper tests to evaluate the ability of the rock to withstand the internal pressure of4,0 MPa that exist near the downstream end of the tunnel.

The three major catalyst markets that utilize industrial minerals as raw materials are petroleum refining, chemical processing, and emission control. Because of economic, competitive, and regulatory pressures, catalyst producers are pushed to develop products with improved performance to meet changing environmental standards. Also, refiners are demanding new families of cracking catalysts that will crack residual fuels. In 1987, worldwide cracking catalyst sales amounted to $457 million (Occelli, 1988a). Recently enacted federal and state laws to improve air quality have prompted strong growth for environmental catalysts, which in 1989 accounted for more than a third of the $1.9 billion catalyst market in the United States (Farrauto, Heck, and Speronello, 1992). A catalyst is a material that promotes or enhances a chemical reaction but does not itself enter into the reaction. One of the more important mineral groups used as catalysts is clays. The first recorded use of clay as a catalyst was its use in the dehydration of alcohol (Bondt et al., 1797). Clay minerals that are used as catalysts are kaolinite, halloysite, smectite, palygorskite, and sepiolite. Minerals used as catalysts, catalyst supports, or as a raw material to make zeolites are kaolinite, halloysite, sodium montmorillonite, calcium montmorillonite, hectorite, palygorskite, sepiolite, talc, calcined kaolinite, gibbsite, chlorite, and titanium dioxide.

LaModel is a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary element method, which is utilized to analyze the displacement and stress in flat-lying, tabular orebodies. In coal mining, the accuracy and reliability of LaModel are proven with the utilization of the Mark- Bieniawski coal pillar strength and the stress gradient formula with proposed methodologies. However, the application of LaModel is limited to coal mines due to the default coal pillar strength properties. Recently, the stress gradient functions have been established and used to derive concentric rings of zones to simulate stone mine pillar yielding in LaModel. Also, to gain a robust understanding of the brittle failure mechanism and its effect on pillar strength, an S-Shaped failure envelope, where rock mass' cohesive and frictional strength components mobilize as a function of confinement (e.g., minimum principal stress), has been implemented into FLAC3D software. Therefore, by employing brittle failure criteria, the pillar strength stages at various width-to-height ratios and different pillar dimensions are estimated for four benching stages. The estimated pillar strengths and stress gradients for benching conditions are then used to calibrate LaModel in-seam material properties and compare stresses computed by LaModel and FLAC3D. Consequently, this study aims to increase the safety measures in the stone mining industry by implementing the practical use of LaModel for underground stone mines' initial development to various stages of bench mining.

This paper quantifies the detrimental effects of pyrite and stibnite on gold leaching kinetics. Means to reduce the effect of these minerals by addition of lead nitrate and oxygen are presented. A significant retarding effect was observed when the pyrite concentration was 20%. A pretreatment with lead nitrate reduced the extent of gold surface coating by Ag, Fe and S. Stibnite, at a concentration as low as 20 ppm, significantly affected the gold leaching kinetics through forming a passivating film of Sb(V) oxide possibly Sb2O5. The most practical way to alleviate the effect of stibnite is to leach the materials at a moderate pH with addition of lead nitrate. A low temperature reduced the efficiency of lead nitrate to counteract the effect of stibnite. The increase of dissolved oxygen is not favourable to alleviate the coating of stibnite on gold.
