INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is responsible for the planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. Some 117 kilometers (72.8 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 30.6 route-kilometers (19 miles) of rock tunneling. To complete the planned system an additional 1.6 kilometers (1.0 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and additional contracts will consist of 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 8 additional linear kilometers (5 miles) of single track tunnel contracts yet to be offered in soft ground. Three recent contracts in soft ground included the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), along with conventional tunneling, as a bid option. Section E5a, Fort Totten Station and Tunnels, was the only one of the three to be constructed using the NATM option. This is the first application of the New Austrian Tunneling Method in soft ground in the United States. This paper will concentrate on the Fort Totten Station chamber NATM design, construction, and the instrumentation readings and evaluations which lead to an engineering back analysis which allowed a refinement of the bid design, resulting in a faster, more efficient construction. Design of the Fort Totten Station and Lines was done by Sheladia Associates. The design team included Greiner Engineering and Jenny Engineering with Mayreder-Consult of Austria, who was responsible for NATM design and NATM construction consultation.

INTRODUCTION Production of chrysotile asbestos from the northern Appalachians has been going on for 100 years and, on the basis of known reserves and the present rates of mining, appears assured of continued production for at least another 25 to 30 years. In spite of this, mining companies and government agencies are showing an increasing interest in exploring for chrysotile asbestos throughout this region and elsewhere in the world, implying that increases in the rate of consumption are envisioned. This chapter describes the geologic and tectonic settings surrounding these important chrysotile deposits, with emphasis on those in southern Quebec that yield about 90% of the total production from the northern Appala- chians. Detailed descriptions of a few individual deposits are also given, along with exploration guidelines aimed at facilitating the discovery of additional chrysotile deposits. One section of this chapter deals with the origin and mode of formation of the chrysotile deposits in the light of modern day concepts of plate tectonics. The objectives of this chapter are to give a brief description of the geologic and tectonic settings of the ultramafic rocks in which the numerous chrysotile deposits of the northern Appalachians are found; to describe a few of the individual deposits; to give a few exploration guidelines for those interested in exploring for new asbestos deposits in similar geologic environments; and to propose a new model for asbestos genesis in light of the recently developed theories of global tectonics. As this chapter is based almost entirely on field and laboratory observations, rather than on the study of experimental laboratory models, most of our deductions and suggestions are empirical in nature and may be interpreted in more than one way. The interpretations we have selected seem to offer, we feel, the best explanation of observed geological phenomena (Lamarche and Wicks, 1975). This region had a production capability in 1979 of close to p.5 Mt of chrysotile asbestos with 92% of this tonnage being derived from the deposits of the Eastern Townships of Quebec. With known resources, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fibers, this production capability seems assured for the next few decades. In spite of all known reserves of chrysotile asbestos, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fiber in this region alone, mining companies and government agencies are still showing a good deal of interest in exploring for new sources throughout the world. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The asbestos deposits at Baie Verte in eastern Newfoundland, Thetford Mines, Black Lake, Asbestos in southern Quebec, and Belvidere Mountain in Vermont, all occur in partly serpentinized ultramafic rocks that are part of the Lower Paleozoic ophiolite complexes of the northern Appalachians [Cady, Albee, Chidester, 1963, Chidester, Albee, Cady, 1978, Lamarche, 1972,1973, Laurent, 1973,1975, Williams, Hibbard, Bursnall, 1977, Norman and Strong, 1975). The deposits to the northeast of Thetford Mines, on the other hand, are found in a more highly serpentinized ultramafic body known as the Pennington dike, whose spatial, genetic, and chronological links with the ophiolite masses proper have not as yet been adequately resolved. The Appalachian ophiolites are part of an ultramafic belt (or belts), that extends from northwestern Newfoundland, through Quebec and Vermont. Fig. 1, and southwestward as far as the

In the past, underground coal mine planning has traditionally focused on the mine design n aspects concerning safety and efficiency in the quest to produce low cost coal. Very little attention has been given to coal quality control aspects of mine planning at most of the underground coal mines within the U.S. With the enactment of the clean air act of 1970, the generally high sulfur content of coal has become a major concern for the coal-fired power plants in the east. Similarly, the ash and the BTU contents of coal are of equal importance from boiler efficiency standpoint. Thus, the time has come when the coal mine planning must incorporate the coal quality control aspects as well as the traditional safety and efficiency aspects.

The term "powder factor" is almost universally accepted as the measure of the efficiency of a blasting program. It represents the economics of blasting since it designates quantity of explosive (thereby providing quality control in rock fragmentation) in terms of the associated volume broken. It is the wide use of this concept that explains the interest shown in an approach to rock blasting preferred by A. W. and Z. W. Daw* in a treatise on 3 blasting (1) substantiating its use in the form, Q = CVW3 for single shot hole, where Q = quantity of explosive lb Cv = blasting coefficient W3 = unit volume of rock It is obvious that the term Cv could also be called the apparent powder factor should the equation be written in the form, Cv = Q/W3 (lb per cubic unit). However, while the approach was ingenious** and the practical applications straightforward, their original, rather limited experimental work, along with certain assumptions, was questioned.

The provision of a suitable working environment in deep level mines requires the accurate prediction of the ventilation heat load. Mathematical models for predicting strata heat load have been under development since the 1930's and 1940's. Computer models for predicting this and other mine heat sources have been developed and refined over the last 20 years. Some empirical studies have occurred and there is an increased emphasis on the importance of underground studies. Any theoretically or empirically determined predictive method must of necessity make assumptions. Underground space with its irregular configurations and rough wall surfaces cannot be described by simple mathematical expressions. Some heat loads, such as machinery, may occur intermittently while others such as the influence of water evaporation are very difficult to quantify accurately. Current popular models for predicting mine heat load have been surveyed. In testing some of these it is often found that each estimates significantly different quantitative values for the expected load in a particular underground space under study. These differences are explained by the assumptions, simplifications and omissions implicit in each of these models. It would be easier to estimate conditions at any point if heat flow into mine air passageways could be described by simple equations with associated statistically-based confidence ranges. Use of probability distributions to indicate confidence ranges allows any heat level estimate to be expressed as a range of values with limits for maximum and minimum expected values. This approach allows many of the limitations of the popular predictive models to be overcome. A heat prediction method using this approach has been developed based on Monte Carlo simulation and tested on mine data from a number of operations. Heat flow levels which can be predicted by simple equations supported by probability distributions allow the engineer flexibility in adjusting a predictive model to the underground characteristics appropriate to the mine site under study. The influence of all heat sources present in the mine opening must be included. Prediction methods must be updated as mining systems and machinery change with time. Heat sources interact with one another and the system must therefore be understood in its entirety.

INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art. As such it is not precise, and the shotcrete produced is of variable quality. MATERIALS HANDLING Materials handling presents a problem to either type of shotcrete machine. Since 1992, a tailings gravity re-treatment plant has been in operation at the New Celebration Gold Mine to recover aurifer­ous pyrite (Martins, Dunne and Gelfi 1991; Martins, Dunne and Delahey 1993). The gravity pyrite concentrate is ground in a Tower mill to liberate gold (average particle size around 25µm) prior to cyanide leaching. Although the re-treatment plant has met the predicted gold recovery, based on original laborat01y testwork, there is still room for improved gold recovery. This requires enhanced pyrite recovery, especially in the finer size ranges. The application of centrifugal gravity separators would seem to be an ideal means to achieve this criterion. In particular, the Falcon continuous centrifugal separator (Series C machines) would appear to be ideal for this particular duty. A testwork program to evaluate the application of the contin­uous Falcon to recover pyrite from New Celebration ores was unde1iaken over a six month period during the later part of 1997. The work involved laboratory batch testwork, followed by con­tinuous testing of the Falcon Cl0 (2tph to 3tph) and Falcon C40 (l00tph) units. A summary of the results from this evaluation program are provided in this paper.

DuPont’s Florida Plant has been mining in northeast Florida and supplying titanium-bearing minerals, zircon and staurolite for over 50years.The site has successfully implemented and “sustained” a land reclamation/habitat enhancement program that goes beyond regulatory requirements and standard industry practices. However, the term sustainability has been used by so many organizations, many with divergent viewpoints, that it is important for a mine to develop its over-all concept and approach to sustainable operation. As a foundation, the outstanding reclamation efforts at DuPont’s mine will be presented followed by a broader look at the overall sustainability strategies and tactics used at the site.

Up to now, the hands-on approach to construction has been stressed. This chapter reviews the basic tools available for construction design and monitoring of a construction project. It is divided into three discussions, all under the general title of computer aids, since the trend for using these tools-is via the computer. In the context of our discussions, the focus for computer aids will be on the use of evaluation and analysis techniques for coal mine construction applications, including mainframe programs, CPM techniques, as well as mini and microcomputer applications. Although the presentation of material in this chapter may be detailed at times, by no means does it cover the entire field of computer applications for design or project scheduling and monitoring. It is only an attempt to illustrate the possibilities that are available to construction and mine engineers. Interested persons can pursue computer applications for coal mining by reviewing Computer Methods for the 80's. by Alfred Weiss, editor, published by SME-AIME.

"The key technologies of a large rectangular pipe jacking machine with dimensions of 10.12m × 7.27m (width x height) include selection of rectangular cross-section cutting modes, analysis on the strength and stiffness of the rectangular shield, integrated control of electro-hydraulic proportional thrust systems and ground conditioning for excavation are presented in detail in this paper. These key technologies have been successfully applied and verified on site during tunneling, providing a new concept for the building of large rectangular traffic and pedestrian tunnels in urban areas for the future.1 INTRODUCTIONIn the past, underground tunnels were mainly used for drainage, sewage, utilities, metro tunnel, etc. and most of them had circular cross-sections. Recently, as a result of economic development, gradually accelerating urbanization process and diminishing ground space, underground tunnels have already become a new trend for urban underground space utilization. Due to the heavy traffic flow, the demands for rectangular cross-section underground tunnels, such as pedestrian underpass and road tunnel, are increasing gradually.The Rectangular pipe jacking machine (hereinafter referred to as RPJM) was firstly developed in Japan for the construction of metro station, pedestrian underpass, underwater tunnel by-passes, etc. Kazunaki Kawai et al. introduced a RPJM developed and manufactured by KOMATSU in 2002 [1]. Tosikazu Kubota et al. confirmed the rectangular tunnels’ superiority to circular tunnels with regard to larger inner cross-section and lower construction cost in their RPJM construction reports [2]. Compared to circular pipe jacking machines, a RPJM also has the merits of a higher inner tunnel space utilization ratio and is able to excavate in shallow overburden areas. As shown in Figure 1, the effective area of a rectangular tunnel is more than 20% higher than that of an equivalent circular tunnel."

There is assembled here this morning in Chicago the heartland of America, what is undoubtedly the greatest concentration of Technical, Scientific and "CAN DO" knowledge ever assembled in America. The participation in this Conference by the representatives of so many nations is particularly impressive and is a further indication of the importance of the subject matter of this conference which you will be discussing in much detail during the next few days. Another impressive feature of this Conference is the participation of a large segment of the construction industry in whose hands fall the job of building what others design. Also strongly represented is the manufacturing industry whose capability is well known throughout the world. They have the resources to design, develop and manufacture the machines and specialized equipment needed to do any job which the world requires. You should not expect to gain any knowledge from my few remarks this morning as I am undoubtedly the least qualified individual in this room on the highly technical and scientific subjects you will be discussing during these next few days. However, I shall offer a few broad suggestions on subject matter which I trust may generate serious thought during your discussions.

The process design of a metallurgical plant follows logical steps, one built on another, to define the circuit requirements. The methodology used and documentation produced is the same for a pre-feasibility study, feasibility study or a complete design, regardless of the process complexity or the commodity. The only difference is the amount of detail developed at each stage. SRK Consulting, an independent, international consulting practice that provides focused advice and solutions to clients, mainly from earth and water resource industries, has consulted on many mining projects around the world. The company was formed in 1974 and now employs more than 1,600 professionals in more than 50 offices on six continents. According to SRK experts, the first element in plant design is collecting metallurgical testwork or operating data from an existing plant. The testwork identifies the process, the metallurgical recoveries and product qualities and establishes the process parameters for economic recovery of the commodity. Test samples must represent both the whole orebody and the feed over the life of the mine, showing the mineral?s variability. With this data available, the process design can be developed.

Reduction bleaching is used to improve the brightness and color of the kaolin pigments sold to the paper and speciality industries. The bleach re¬duces the iron oxide associated with kaolin deposits to a colorless form by the following reaction: Na2S2O42+ 6Fe+3 + 4 H2O -> 2 NaHSO4 + 6Fe+2 + 6H+ (Conley et al., 1964). At present, sodium hydrosulfite is used by the kaolin industry as the reductive bleach. It is often purchased commercially as a liquid solution and added into an acidified slurry. Before the use of commercial sodium hydrosulfite, kaolin plants manufactured zinc hydrosulfite on site by adding zinc dust to sulfurous acid made by passing SO2 gas into water. This process was abandoned in the 1970s due to environmental concerns about zinc in waste waters. In the 1970s, Engelhard patented a process that made sodium hydrosulfate from an iron hydrosulfate (Tiethof, 1978). Difficulties with separating the iron hydroxide byproduct from the bleach and a decrease in the cost of commercial bleach caused the project to be abandoned.

Although great strides have been made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, the number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time has continued to increase. Looking ahead to the 1990s, the reduction of accidents and incidents typically found in these latter categories should be emphasized in safety training for underground coal mining. Loss control is an approach which shows promise for applications in mine safety training since loss-control strategies focus on the pre-contact stages of an incident rather than on the incident, itself. Applied to safety training, the heightened awareness of personnel to workplace hazards at the pre-contact stages should result in a reduction of accidents and injuries. This paper explains the concept of loss control and shows how it can be applied in the development of the needs assessment for miner training programs. An example, based on research conducted at the continuous-miner worksite, is provided.

There are numerous techniques and predictive models used by geologists and mining engineers to define coal reserves and plan mines. The traditional reserve estimation methods commonly used include the isopach, triangular, polygonal, inverse-distance weighting, weighted-moving-average, and trend-surface methods. Geostatistically-based estimation techniques are now being examined by many geologists and mine planners as a superior alternative to these traditional methods. With today's coal mine development costs often exceeding $100 million, and power generation $1 billion, it is logical that a technique that can indicate the degree of confidence associated with a reserve estimate (fuel supply), and thus also the degree of risk, is highly desirable to the coal producer, the financiers, and those desiring to commit to coal utilization under short or long-term supply arrangements.

In December of 1992, the City of New York, Department of Environmental Protection, solicited bids for Contract 543B. The low bidder was a joint venture of Schiavone Construction Co., Inc. and the J. F. Shea Co., Inc. When completed, the project provides a 4.88 meter diameter water tunnel 8,840 meters long. This paper presents a case history of the equipment and construction methods utilized for this, the first portion of the New York City Water Tunnel constructed by use of a tunnel boring machine.

"The wash ore area on the Mesabi iron range covers a regionof the iron bearing formation extending from Grand Rapids on the west to the Hibbing district, about forty miles eastward. Not all of the developed ore bodies are of wash structure; some are of such grades that they can be shipped direct as merchants able ore. It is safe to say, however, that 65 per cent of the ore is of a possible wash structure and of too high a silica content to be classified as merchantable ore. The increase in the number of washing plants completed each year on the western Mesabi shows that ,the product must be of a structure desirable for furnace operation. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multielement ground support system, there is a need to know the support characteristics that the shotcrete contributes to the overall system. To quantify the support provided by the shotcrete, flexural strength tests were conducted with two common, commercially available fiber-reinforced shotcrete (FRS) mixes using the round determinant panel (RDP) test method, ASTM C 1550. A portable RDP test machine developed by NIOSH researchers was used to determine the peak flexural load and residual load capacity for a steel FRS and a synthetic poly FRS that were sprayed using dry mix procedures and equipment. Besides the flexural strength and loading behavior determined from these tests, a method was also developed for measuring the width of cracks exposed on the underside of a shotcrete panel during a RDP test and relating these measurements to residual load values. Quantifying the peak flexural load and residual loads of a shotcrete mix through on site testing at a mine and visually assessing the loading cycle and load-carrying capability of the shotcrete applied to underground workings will improve mine safety by providing a better assessment of the stability of shotcrete supported entries.

"The Copper Mountain Mine is located in Princeton British Columbia, Canada and produces 80 – 90 million pounds of copper annually, as well as gold and silver by-products. The ore processing plant has a conventional SAG/ball mill circuit with inline pebble crushing, followed by flotation. At most plants, much time is spent evaluating and optimizing the comminution and flotation circuits. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant: They define the circulating load in the comminution circuit and provide the classification that ensures liberated material is passed through to flotation. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput in flotation. For such an impactful unit operation, cyclones have historically been under-instrumented. Consider as well that the cyclones are typically located at the highest elevation in a plant, and it becomes clear why they often underperform. Copper Mountain Mine recognized the critical role that cyclones filled in their plant and worked to optimize their operation through the implementation of a Portage Cyclone Detection (PCD) system to identify plugging and roping incidents, Portage Pumpbox Control (PPC) to manage the flow to the cyclones, and AwaRE to control the grinding circuit. As a result, cyclones overflow stability has increased, switching out a roped or plugged cyclone now happens within seconds rather than many minutes, and both the grinding and flotation circuits perform better. INTRODUCTION Cyclones are one of the most extensively used pieces of equipment within the mineral processing industry because of their simplistic operating and maintenance philosophies. The cyclones are commonly used as classifiers within the comminution circuit to control the grinding product particle size for satisfactory performance of downstream operations. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant and have a significant impact on the mineral processing plant operations. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput. Similarly, an inefficient cyclone operation may also lead to low or high recirculating loads that impact the efficiency of the comminution circuit. This highlights the importance to have proper stability in cyclone operation while implementing any plant-wide optimisation strategy."

Restrictions on fugitive emissions and crushing operations continue to get tighter. Although fugitive dust control in the gold mining industry has historically been difficult, there are now several options that can make dust control both effective and efficient. Using new technology, mine operators can now design and maintain a dust control program that can reduce product losses, decrease equipment failure, cut cleaning costs, and meet air quality compliance standards as well as provide a better working environment. This paper discusses the sources of fugitive emissions related to the gold mining and crushing operations and describes effective new control methods.
