With the advent of acid rain legislation included within the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, a great deal of uncertainty with regard to price, source and production quantities has been cast into the coal market. Powder River Basin and other western coals continue a rapidly accelerating migration eastward, South American coals move into the northern markets, states propose legislation to assist utilities in complying with the new regulations in hopes of maintaining their own coal industries, while some utilities question the long term availability of eastern compliance coal. Any major coal producer must make decisions now to assure their continuing presence in the market place; several companies have adopted a strategy to acquire eastern compliance reserves while others have invested in technology to compete as a low cost producer. This paper discusses some of these options in light of the uncertainties of the market place, from an eastern coal producer?s viewpoint.

The Mercur Gold Mine is located 56 km (35 air miles) southwest of Salt Lake City in north central Utah. In July 1981 Getty Mining Company made the decision to put Mercur into production. The first gold bar was poured in April 1983. This paper provides details on: 1) the history of the camp, 2) past production, 3) geology of the deposit, 4) the exploration and development program, 5) ore reserve estimates, 6) detailed geologic pit mapping, 7) production blasthole sampling techniques and 8) the use of geostatistics (kriging) in handling assays and gold extractions to produce the required mill feed.

INTRODUCTION The flotation of minerals from their ores in flotation cells involves understanding many chemical and physical processes ranging from electronic events in the bulk mineral and in the mineral surface regime. molecular events at interfaces, the statics and dynamics of thinning and rupture of microscopic to molecular intefacial films, the fluid mechanics of bubble- particle events, the dynamics of air-water-solid colloid states in a flotation machine, etc. etc. D.W. Fuerstenau, whom we honour in this symposium has made unique contributions to many of these diverse physico-chemical and technological sub-processes. The present paper is concerned with a number of observations of the behaviour of minerals in flotation cells and the surface science of some mineral sulfide-water systems. We do not intend to be comprehensive in our analysis, but rather to highlight the challenges that face the scientific masochist who chooses to understand "froth flotationn. In what follows, emphasis is placed quite deliberately on technologically relevant, dynamic or realistic flotation processes i.e. the recovery in a froth of a given sulfide mineral particle of a given size and history from synthetic or actual ores in a flotation cell. Tertiary calc-alkalic to alkalic rocks of the Little Rocky Mountains in north-central Montana host low-grade heap-leachable gold-silver deposits being mined by Pegasus Gold Corporation. Total production from 1884 through 1985 is estimated at 22,625 kilograms (727,414 ounces) of gold. This includes 10,774 kilograms (346,400 ounces) recovered by Pegasus between 1980 to 1986 from 20,318,000 tonnes (22,396,000 tons) of ore grading 0.960 grams of gold per tonne (0.028 ounces per ton). Silver production during this latter period was 24,556 kilograms (789,500 ounces), but reliable silver statistics prior to 1980 are not available. Ore reserves as of January 1, 1986, were estimated to be 35,380,800 tonnes (39,000,000 tons) grading 0.720 grams per tonne (0.021 ounces per ton). Present ore production is 5,533,920 tonnes (6,100,000 tons) per year at a 0.45 to 1 waste to ore strip ratio. Current annual metal production is about 2,644 and 5,288 kilograms of gold and silver respectively (85,000 and 170,000 ounces of gold and silver respectively). The Little Rockies were formed by a calc-alkalic to alkalic magma penetrating through the Precambrian basement into the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. This intrusive center is Dart of the Central Montana Alkalic Province, a region comprised of twelve separate intrusive centers aligned in a northeast trending belt measuring 200 by 400 kilometers (124 x 248 miles). The ore deposits are structurally controlled epithermal systems which vary from deeper narrow veins to shallow, wide, low-grade stockworks, breccias and intensely fractured "sheeted" zones. The shallow types are now being exploited. Primary mineralization consists principally of gold and silver associated with pyrite, native gold and silver, sylvanite, calaverite, and hessite. Alteration is broadly classified as weak argillic. Pyritization, kaolinization, silicification and feldspathization are the dominant forms of alteration. Fluorite is a common hydrothermal gangue mineral.

Since the early 1950's exploration in the Yukon Territory, Canada, has been confined largely to Selwyn basin where at least five large stratiform or massive sulfide Pb-Zn deposits have been discovered. The five ore bodies total nearly 100 million tons of 10-16% combined Pb-Zn with 1-3 oz./ton Ag. The only deposit currently in production is the Anvil Mine operating at 8,000 tons per day. Beginning in 1972, exploration in the Mackenzie Mountains, east of Selwyn basin and west of Mackenzie arch, resulted in finds of Mississippi Valley type Zn-Pb mineralization in a belt of Proterozoic and Lower Paleozoic carbonate rocks (Figure 1). Four districts have been located and intensive exploration by numerous Canadian and Arnerican mining companies is currently in progress over a length of 400 miles in the carbonate belt. The consensus is that a major new Zn-Pb province may be taking shape.

There are many risks associated with the storage of nuclear or other toxic wastes. One of the major risks is the escape of material from the repository. No matter how well a storage facility is engineered, the potential escape of dangerous material must be studied. This kind of study will include some estimation of the "travel path" of the particles. The travel path of a radio-nuclide particle will depend on the geological and hydrological parameters of the surrounding rocks. These parameters must be estimated from a limited number of samples available within the study area. Any estimation will -of necessity -contain a certain amount of uncertainty or "estimation error". This uncertainty will be carried through to the analysis of potential movement of particles, so that the estimated travel path itself will be subject to some error. This paper discusses an approach which may lead to a quantification of the uncertainty on the predicted travel path.

The purposes of this presentation are: (1) to discuss the actual as well as potential incidents that have caused and that could cause groundwater contamination at uranium in situ leach mining sites and (2) to discuss remedial actions and solutions that have been or that could be implemented in the future to stop or prevent serious groundwater contamination from in situ leach mining in Wyoming?s Powder River Basin. Open pit, underground, and existing and proposed in situ leach uranium mine sites in the Powder River Basin are shown in Figure 1. In situ leach mining or solution mining for extracting minerals in liquid form is a relatively new addition to the list of conventional mining methods currently used to extract uranium in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Basically, the in situ leach mining method involves: (1) the injection of a leach solution lixiviant (an acidic or basic oxidizing solution) into a uranium-bearing ore body, via injection wells, to complex the contained uranium, (2) mobilization of the uranium complex from the host material via creation of a soluble complex salt, and (3) surface recovery of the solution bearing the uranium complex via production wells. Uranium is then separated from the leach solution by conventional milling unit operations (ion exchange).

Although the evaluation of autoclave oxidation for Getchell ore was begun nearly 40 years ago, its ultimate implementation in 1989 represents the first substantial improvement in the economics of processing this refractory ore. Sulfide ores at Getchell were previously roasted prior to leaching (in the 30's and 60's), resulting in somewhat lower recoveries than are currently realized by autoclave oxidation. Recoveries on the order of 90% are expected from the high-arsenic sulfide ore over the expected 10-year mine life.

The Lynne deposit is a volcanic-to volcaniclastic-hosted, Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag orebody located in the early Proterozoic magmatic terrain of northern Wisconsin. As of February 1991, core drilling has partially delineated a multi-million ton, near-surface, disseminated to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is hosted by a gently dipping sequence of fragmental rhyolites, felsic tuffs, less abundant dacite to andesite flows, and fine-grained volcanic sediments. The deposit is broadly conformable With the host rock stratigraphy, but the ore zones thicken and coalesce in the central part of the deposit.

The on-stream analysis of phosphorus and silica has not been possible by XRF techniques and only recently has some success been indicated with quantitative XRD for P. Yet there has been a recognized need for an on-stream analysis of P and acid insoluble to permit the automatic control of phosphate rock flotation plants which produce some 30-40 million tons of concentrate each year in the southeastern U.S. IMC Fertilizer, Inc., the largest U.S. phosphate rock producer, embarked on a program to develop such an on-stream analysis capability several years ago. Following many months of lab and prototype development, the first commercial installations started in December 1986 and now have completed some 400,000 analyses with surprising accuracy, precision and reliability. The use of these devices in the improved control of the phosphate flotation plant is currently receiving some very serious attention at IMC.

Introduction Soda ash is known chemically as sodium carbonate, an important inorganic chemical. It has been produced for several centuries by processing certain vegetation and minerals. The US soda ash industry has evolved from several small sodium carbonate mining operations in the West. Now, a nucleus of six companies produce about one-fourth of the world's annual soda ash output US producers currently dominate the world market. But certain international events are occurring that will reshape the domestic soda ash industry in the next decade. Historical perspective Soda ash is used mainly in the manufacture of glass, soap, dyes and pigments, textiles, and other chemical preparations. All of these are the first basic consumer products produced by developing societies. About 3500 BC, the Egyptians became the first society to use crude soda ash. The soda ash was used to make glass containers. It was most likely obtained from dried mineral incrustations around alkaline lakes. Soda deposits were virtually nonexistent in western Europe. So people resorted to burning seaweed to obtain the ashes. The ashes were then leached with hot water and the solute was recovered after evaporating the solution to dryness. The solute, a crude "soda ash" was impure. But, it could be used to make glass and soap. These two products and industries were important to the population and economic growth of the region. About 11.5 t (13 st) of seaweed ash was required to produce about 0.9 t (1 st) of soda ash. Along the coasts of England, France, and Spain, seaweeds with varying alkali contents became important items of commerce and sources of soda ash before the 18th century. The LeBlanc process used salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. It became the major method of production from about 1823 to 1885. In the early 1860s, Ernest and Alfred Solvay, two Belgian brothers, successfully commercialized an ammonia-soda process to synthesize soda ash. It used salt, coke, limestone, and ammonia. The Solvay process produced a better quality product than the LeBlanc method. In 1879, Oswald J. Heinrich presented to the Baltimore meeting of AIME, a paper entitled "The manufacture of soda by the ammonia process." The paper compared the two processes and foretold the demise of the LeBlanc technique. World production of soda ash in 1880 was 680 kt (750,000 st). Of that, 544 kt (600,000 st) was produced by the LeBlanc process. Of the 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st) of soda ash produced worldwide in 1913, only about 50 kt (55,000 st) was by the LeBlanc method. The LeBlanc process was never used successfully in the US, except for a brief period from July 1884 to January 1885 in Laramie, WY. Previously, soda ash had been produced by burning certain plants, as exemplified by the early Jamestown colonists, or by recovering small quantities of natural sodium carbonate found in alkaline lakes, such as those found near Fallon, NV, and Independence Rock, WY. Before the 1884 startup of the first synthetic soda ash plant in the US at Syracuse, NY, most of the domestic soda ash demand in the East was met by imports, primarily from England. Large-scale commercial production of natural soda ash began in California in 1887 from surface crystalline material at Owens Lake. Production from sodium carbonate-bearing brines at Searles Lake began in 1927 (Fig. 1). In 1938, during exploration for oil and gas in southwestern Wyoming, a massive buried trona deposit, presumably the world's largest, was accidentally discovered. Recent mineral resource evaluation by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines indicates that the Wyoming trona deposit contains 86 Gt (93 billion st) of identified trona resource in beds 1.2 m (4 ft) thick or greater. Additionally, there is about 61 Gt (67 billion st) of reserve base trona. Of this 36 Gt (40 billion st) is in halite-free trona beds and 24 Gt (27 billion st) is in mixed trona and halite beds. In 1953, the Food Machinery and Chemical Corp. (later shortened to FMC Corp.) became the first company to mine trona in Wyoming. Soda ash demand increased.

The development of techniques for separating minerals based on differences in their specific gravities is reviewed and their present applications in process technology outlined. Special emphasis is placed on the development, in Australia, of new models of the spiral concentrator. The mechanics of separation of spiral separators are stated, including the effects of operating parameters, Some of the traditional areas of spiral application are described, together with examples of new applications such as treatment of fine alluvials and tailings, separation of liberated minerals at coarse sizes and fine coal recovery.

The Serrana Process was developed in the 60's to concentrate an igneous low grade phosphate/carbonate ore using tall oil as a collector and corn starch as a modifier in alkaline medium. Nowadays, although tall oil has already been substituted by a new amphoteric synthetic collector, starch hasn't been substituted yet. This study is an attempt towards understanding the role played by corn starch in this specific system. By means of bench scale flotation test, it was observed that corn starch was capable of promoting the flotation of apatite, phlogopite and dolomite. No effect over calcite was observed. The best efficiency of separation apatite/gangue minerals was yielded at the concentration ranges of 17 to 20 mg/l of starch and 13 to 17 mg/l of tall oil. The starch concentration showed a strong influence over the characteristics of the froth produced by the flotation tests, mainly over the volume of the froth and its mineralization.

The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonite to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath. 1986 and personal communication). These bentonite; typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X- ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. A 2 1/2 inch diameter probe containing a high resolution gamma ray spectrometer was developed for downhole ore grade assays to depths of 6,000 feet. Tests have been conducted on the characteristics of this tool for in-situ determinations of uranium by means of natural gamma ray counting, and of copper, silver, gold, iron and coal quality by means of neutron-induced gamma rays. Application of the technique for improved carbon-oxygen logging in oil fields is promising. The probe contains a cryogenically cooled high purity germanium detector and a 4,000 channel spectrum analyzer. Gamma ray spectra are digitally transmitted up the cable to the truck-mounted data processing system. We found that uranium can be assayed directly in different types of formations independently of the degree of geochemical disequilibrium by counting the relatively weak 1.001 MeV gamma ray of protactinium-234m. Neutron activation work shows that in-situ determinations of copper, silver, iron and coal quality are technically feasible. In carbon-oxygen oil well logging the technique allows an accurate determination of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine, silicon, calcium and iron, and shows promise of providing an improved oil/water differentiator.

The Cactus Gold Mine is a joint venture comprised of Middle Buttes Partners Ltd. (CoCa Mines, Inc.--operator, T. Congdon and W. Carey) and Compass Mining, Inc. The project includes 2.4 sq. miles of contiguous mining claims and leases in the Mojave Mining District, Kern County, California, approximately B5 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The property is readily accessible year round by all-weather roads and is within 6 miles of the main line of the Southern Pacific Railway.

INTRODUCTION The potential health impact from uranium milling operations is mainly associated with long-term releases of radioactive contaminants from the mill tailings.(1,2) The major mechanisms for mitigating these potential releases focus on increasing the tailings containment with the addition of migration barriers such as thick earthen covers and clay liners. Some limited investigation has also focused on reducing the radionuclide source terms. This alternative approach has some desirable features, but stringent cost requirements are placed upon source removal methods in order for them to be economically favorable. A cost effectiveness evaluation is presented herein, in which costs for containment methods are used to establish maximum cost guidelines for the source removal methods. The 230U decay chain, shown in Figure 1 contains the radioisotopes of major concern, 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn and its short-lived alpha-emitting daughters, When the uranium is removed in the milling process, these isotopes, which are normally not removed remain in the tailings solids. The general pathways to the environment from uranium mill tailings are depicted in Figure 2. The dominant pathways are radon to the atmosphere and radium and thorium to a groundwater aquifer. The magnitude of the contaminants released into these pathways can be characterized by the following parameters: 1. The 230Th and 226Ra content. 2. The emanating power for radon. The fraction of radon generated that is free to migrate. 3. The leach rates. Source reduction methods seek to reduce the magnitude of any or all of these parameters. In general the dose rates are proportional to the source terms. For radon production the source term is proportional to the product of the radium concentration, R, and the emanating power, E, so that the risk is reduced by the same factor that reduces RE. For example, if the radium content is reduced by 95 percent, but E is increased by a factor of two, then the dose rates are reduced by an order of magnitude. When extending the life of an existing mine in Appalachia, it is common to acquire the adjacent reserves and extend the existing mine into it. The existing mine is often renovated to accommodate the new conditions. The existing mining system and the track and belt haulage systems may he modified while the new property is integrated into the old one. All of these changes create new constraints for the mine ventilation system (MVS) that require proper planning and control procedures. This paper presents a study that was carried out for the ventilation system of a newly expanded underground coal mine in the Appalachian region. The process of correcting the ventilation system of the existing mine is discussed. That is followed by a discussion of some of the stages of controlling the expanded system. Numerical data for these steps are also presented.

The image of the flotation froth surface in the mineral processing plant contains the information about its composition. This information can be very useful for a technological process automation. Images, captured in the optical part of the measurement system were read by the computer, then were transformed and analysed digitally. The set of image parameters, extracted from an image transforms, was evaluated by statistical analysis. The recognition algorithm constructed in this process allowed to estimate the froth composition.
