When burning coal from this plant, particulate emissions are greatly reduced and the sulfur content of stack ace descend. The cleaner coal also leads to more effecting overall operating of the power plants because of less bulk handling of fuel and ash. Environmental improvement is an important benefit of the cleaner, more complete combustion.]

Two new coal use technologies are on the verge of commercial acceptance by the utility industry: atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) and gasification combined cycle (GCC). Generating plants under construction or in planning will replace older pulverized coal (PC) boilers or substitute for new PC boiler capacity. This paper reports recent developments in the commercialization of AFBC and GCC, emphasizing the potential impact on the coal mining industry. The influence of coal quality characteristics on fuel selection is explored by means of preliminary economic calculations for different coals and competing fuels.

Geochemical laboratories are commonly criticized by geologists about poor analytical reproducibility and erratic anomaly patterns, especially when gold and trace metals from resistant minerals are reported. Geochemical analysis in mineral exploration is a compromise between high productivity on the one hand, imposed by large numbers of samples, and analytical precision and accuracy on the other. However, the physical properties of resistant minerals, such as cassiterite, gold, beryl, chromite, zircon and others, interfere with both of these requirements. Therefore, the degree of sample homogeneity that can reasonably be achieved in sampling and sample preparation must be considered. Subsequently, the understanding of its effects on analytical data quality and the consequences on data interpretation will provide a basis for understanding the problems common to exploration as an interdisciplinary science. Complaints about poor and inadequate analytical performance are not confined to exploration geochemistry. They are a common feature in mining and metallurgy and wherever sampling and analysis of "grains" are concerned - the "nugget" or "grain size effect." The "grain size" effect Poor analytical reproducibility is normal for gold and a well-defined group of other elements usually found in resistant placer minerals. Those who use and interpret geochemical data must realize and appreciate the chemical, the physicochemical, the physical and the mineralogical properties of the elements and their minerals. Especially for the "placer" minerals and their elements, such comprehensive interpretation is crucial. The most important factor to consider is the behavior of a mineral and its metal component(s) during weathering and their integration into the sampled medium, in exploration mostly sediments and soils. (Data interpretation for samples of water, gas, to a certain extent rock, follows different patterns.) A mineral may be chemically and physically stable or it may easily disintegrate physically or decompose chemically, or any combination of such processes, at varying degrees. The breakdown products, in turn, may or may not, interreact with the environment. If the nature of an element or a mineral predestines it for a heterogenous distribution in the sample medium, then nature, size and number of grains likely to occur should be considered in relation to the sample portion taken for analysis. This allows the estimation of their effect on analytical precision and accuracy. Elaborate and sophisticated statistical calculations exist on this subject. But these approaches do not cope with the complexity of the natural surface environment. The miner alogical, chemical and environmental behavior of elements and minerals can be estimated but not calculated. However, the mineral grain sizes and their influence on analytical precision can be precisely calculated if certain conditions, assumptions and idealizations are made. If the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of minerals and elements are understood, such calculations demonstrate the grain (or nugget) effects that mineral properties and (geo)chemical behavior of minerals and elements cause on the precision and accuracy of geochemical analysis through their influence on sample homogeneity. Two other factors that influence the sample homogeneity and the nugget effect are the efficiency of sample preparation and the sample portion taken for analysis. In this way, certain element- or mineral-specific parameters can be established as a guide for the sampling program. The information, for example, may assist in determining sampling procedures in the field, especially the sample weight to be taken for "representative samples." Also, it may help assess whether analytical data, as provided by the laboratory, are acceptable. Finally, it may help determine the approach in data interpretation. However, all such simplified calculations are based on idealized, that is, unreal assumptions and conditions. As such, they represent one extreme end on the scale of probabilities. The reality is found somewhere away from this extreme, towards homogeneity. An example from a study of an eluvial gold prospect may be given for illustration: •Original sample weight: 20 kg (44 lbs) of rock gravel, crushed and ground to -0.18 mm (-80 mesh). •Au content: 20 grains of Au, average size of about 0.5 mm3 (0.03 cu in.) each = 7.5 mg each, making a total of about 150 mg Au in the sample = 7.5 ppm Au. Assumptions •Au occurs in the sample as free, discrete grains only. •Not more than one grain, if any, goes into each sample split (analyte) portion (20 grains of 7.5 mg Au each). •Analysis of original rock sample: 100 g sample for analysis, 20 kg/100 g = 200 samples 20 samples with 1 grain each: result, - 75 ppm Au. 180 samples with no grain: result, 0 ppm Au chances 1:9 •10 g sample for analysis:

The development of new coal markets is -t upon the ability to utilize coal in an environmentally acceptable and economically viable fashion. Foremost in the concerns about coal utilization is the impact its combustion has on air pollution. Concerns over environmental issues, such as acid rain, are currently one of the major impediments to the development of new coal markets. The Department of Energy and the Synthetic Fuels Corporation are addressing certain aspects of the development of new technologies for the utilization of coal. However, at the present time, there is a void in the new technology development process. That void is the step from proof- of-concept to commercial demonstration. Congress has established the Clean Coal Technology Fund at a level of $750 million to fill this void. The Department of Energy, in a solicitation of interest, received over 175 proposals for commercial demonstrations of clean coal technologies. A review of these solicitations indicates that $1.2 billion worth of research could be accomplished with a federal cost sharing of $425 million or 35 percent of the total. Industry has indicated, through this response, its willingness to invest its limited funds on projects it feels have the greatest potential for the clean use of coal. What must now occur is that Congress must appropriate the monies from the fund to initiate the commercialization of these clean coal techno1ogies.

The Moon has one-sixth of Earth's gravity, virtually no atmosphere, a surface bathed in radiation and micrometeorites, large temperature gradients, low seismicity, and a dusty, rubbly surface. To successfully mine and process materials on the Moon and to mitigate degradation effects in the hostile lunar environment, these factors require new designs for equipment and development of new techniques and technologies.

The Haile Gold Mine is one of the earliest gold discoveries in the eastern United States as well as one of the largest gold producers from that region. Gold was first discovered in the gravels of what is now known as Haile Gold Mine Branch in 1828 on lands then owned by Colonel Benjamin Hale (spelling not the same). Small placer workings were immediately started and it was not long before the surrounding residual soils and saprolites were also found to contain gold. Following the presence of gold in the residuum eventually lead to the discovery of the underlying gold-bearing lodes that actually outcropped in saprolite form where not masked by heavy vegetation or a thin veneer of Coastal Plain sand. The earliest attempts at production, immediately after discovery, utilized slave labor, washing gravel and residuum from leased tracts that were 15m (50 ft) square. Several at- tempts at small milling operations were made during the en- suing decades, but there was really no substantial or successful production until the 1880s.

Traditional or artisanal goldmining, also known as small scale goldmining, has a strong and probably a negative environmental impact. The processing methods applied are very frequently a source of severe pollution due to the emissions of mercury by the extraction of gold by means of amalgamation as well as the emissions of cyanide through cyanide leaching of gold bearing ores. The emissions find their way into the environment and contaminate soils, sediments, water and atmosphere. Abnormal concentrations of mercury and cyanides in waterways are known to occur year after year destroying irreplaceable regions of the world. Mercury and cyanide compounds are highly toxic and may directly create permanent damage to the whole ecosystem. Existing methods for recycling of mercury and for decontamination of mercury and cyanide contaminated tailings are not customary applied in small scale mining and are ineffective as well. Based on investigations of traditional and small size goldmining, this paper presents: -processing methods of gold and discarded tailings under consideration of environmental protection; -figures on actual situation; -recommendations for equipment; -some decontamination methods for mercury and residual cyanide. Mineral Processing methods in traditional gold mining Gold is usually existing in its ores as the metal alloyed with metallic silver and perhaps copper. The element may occur in the form of: -native gold -inclusions also of microns or submicroscopic size metal sulfides (auriferous) such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite, arsenopyrite and galena -combined as telluride or sulphotelluride. The separation process selected depends on whether the gold can be freed from its unfavorable associations (e.g. gangue) at a sufficiently coarse grain-size, or whether it is carried in a heavy sulfide which can be freed similarly. The usual practice is to concentrate the goldbearing mineral at a relatively coarse grain-size and to regrind the ore if necessary. The gold content is concentrated by secondary or tertiary gravital methods or is extracted by chemical methods (amalgamation, cyanidation etc.) Gold, even when of fine grain-size, settle readily due to its high specific gravity from pulps in which the main gangue mineral is quartz or silicates. Amalgamation is the process of separating gold and silver from their associated minerals by binding (entrapping) them into a mixture with mercury. The cyanide process is applied to separate gold or gold-bearing compounds by dissolution from the finely ground ore (CIP, CIL, RIP), or as heap leaching. The dissolved gold is separated from the solids and the metal-rich or pregnant solution is then treated to recover its gold. Gold is also recovered by flotation methods. This process is widely used in treating base metal ores and in separating various sulfide components of ores, as well as in removing the barren gangue. The gold usually associates with a specific product in a sequence of flotation operations and is recovered subsequently in the smelting of the sulfide concentrates and refining of the metallic products, or by cyanidation of the roasted concentrates. Froth-flotation can be applied to separate gold and sulfide minerals from a finely ground pulp. The Amalgamation Process Amalgamation is the main method for the recovery of gold in traditional mining and is applied for the extraction of gold from placers as well as primary ores. The mineral technology used depends on the nature of ore deposits. In winning gold from solid ore, the matrix of minerals and rocks must be crushed and ground to sufficient fineness to liberate the gold. The liberated gold could be treated similar as free gold from placers. Gold is mainly separated from the valueless gangue (barren rock) by utilizing the difference between the density of the impure native metal (density about 16-19) and the gangue (density about 2.5). In simple operations the material is carried by a stream of water down a sluice generally equipped with small transverse barriers (riffles) against which the gold collects. The riffled sluice is the principal device used by artisanal gold miners. Nowadays, spirals as well as centrifuges, such as Knelson separator or Falcon separator, are occasionally applied for gold recovery. Gold may also be recovered from the pulp, by passing it over corduroycovered tables that catch the heavier particles - a method maybe as ancient as gold mining itself. The total value of coal, FOB mine, consumed in the United States was $21 billion in 1985. Roughly $6 billion was spent to transport coal from the mine to the consumer by rail. This indicates the impact railroad transportation has on the competitiveness of U.S. coal as an energy resource. Actually, this is just the tip of the iceberg. When you consider the largest U.S. reserve of coal, the Powder River Basin, which is possibly the lowest cost coal in the U.S., or maybe even the world, the transportation cost is the overriding factor in developing competitive pricing. Rail transportation costs from Powder River can be multiples of 2, 3, or even 4 times the cost of coal FOB mine. About sixty percent of all U.S. coal is shipped by rail. In the case of Powder River Basin coal and many other reserves there are no current alternatives to rail. Are there feasible alternatives to rail transport?

The term "diatomite" implies the nearly pure sedimentary accumulation of diatoms. Sedimentary and chemical purity, low density, inertness, intricate fine structure, high brightness and other properties give the diatom and diatomite unique industrial usefulness and commercial value in high value functional filler and specialty filter aid products. Although diatomite deposits occur commonly throughout the world in Miocene and younger marine and lacustrine sediments, deposits that contain significant reserves of crude suitable for these quality sensitive markets are uncommon. U.S. production is centered on exceptional deposits located in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and California. Evaluation of deposits requires understanding of geology, mining, production and end use. As crude quality in deposits varies within and between strata, ore suitable for quality sensitive end uses must be identified through sampling and evaluation programs tailored to permit recognition of critical variations.

INTRODUCTION Most metallic minerals and some industrial minerals have a relatively high specific gravity and most have at one time or another been concentrated by gravity methods. The principles of gravity concentration are straightforward, well documented and easy to understand, but in practice there are many pitfalls that await the engineer in the development of an integrated flowsheet. Gravity concentration equipment has a long history of use and there is a great diversity available. The equipment is capable of treating material over a broad size range, only falling off in efficiency in the very fine sizes. Gravity concentration is also inexpensive, generally free of environmental problems, and commercial equipment can process large tonnages of ore with a minimum of capital cost. As might be expected of an efficient and low cost process, the bulk of the tonnage quickly and inexpensively. Another obvious application is treating mineral deposits such as hematite and manganese ores that are sufficiently liberated after a minimum of crushing to allow production of a coarse concentrate that will meet market specifications. Except for hand picking and mechanical sorting, there is no competing process on coarse size material. Conversely, it is sometimes obvious that gravity concentration does not warrant consideration. Examples are ores that require very fine grinding to attain liberation, for ores where the minerals of interest have a gravity similar to the gangue, and ores that are strongly magnetic. The value of US industrial mineral output last year was $20 billion, a 12% decline from 1981. A glance at the accompanying table and a review of the comments made by several contributors reveals how poorly many industrial minerals fared during 1982. Bromine and peat posted a 6% increase in production while recovered sulfur showed only a 3% gain over 1981. Pumice, salt, and dimension stone managed to stay more or less even with 1981 production. However, most industrial minerals posted losses for the year from 3% for vermiculite, sodium carbonate, and gypsum to 49% for ilmenite. Naturally, the depressed economy is to blame for decreased production and consumption. Low steel and auto production, lower housing starts, and many other factors impacted the industrial mineral industries. Hopefully the worst is over. Interest rates are down, energy costs are decreasing, the automobile and housing industries show signs of picking up. Perhaps the 1983 annual review will be less gloomy. As coal reserves at shallow depths continue to be exhausted, a number of US coal companies are developing seams previously considered too deep to mine economically. Because of increased cover load, mines operating in deeper seams face unique ground control problems. In addition, the volume of methane gas in coal beds increases with depth, and ventilation requirements are much more stringent for deep mines than for shallower mines. When the longwall mining method is wed at great depths, ventilation, ground control, and operational considerations all influence the design of longwall panels. This paper examines these influences, particularly ventilation and operational considerations, on the feasibility of two-, three-, and four-entry longwall development panels in Jim Walter Resources' four deep mines.

Much has been written and many discussions held on the virtues (and evils?) of a Company-owned motor fleet. Almost invariably these dialogues take a generalized form and thereby lose something since the individual circumstances, geography and philosophy - particularly in diverse industries, is never quite the same. In considering the nature of my remarks today, I felt a departure from the general approach might be in order, and in lieu of that, will attempt to present a concise picture of how we in the Lehigh Portland Cement Company view this problem and the steps we have taken in our efforts to solve it. At the outset a word may be in order about the Lehigh Company itself, what we do, and the problems that confront us specifically as well as the cement industry at large. We are primarily a manufacturer of portland cement operating 10 plants with a total annual capacity of about 23,000,000 barrels. We market this material in 30 states, shipping both from the plants directly as well as through a system of 18 distribution terminals. About 150,000 truckloads of cement are shipped to customers each year.

Computor analysis has opened a new world of information for the mining of resources. This paper is directed at the mining of coal. The same procedures apply to most mining projects. The available facts when evaluated against the variables produce the answers. The project must be carefully analyzed, so that the facts can be organized in a data file. The file can be expanded as additional information is obtained during the entire life of the mine. If the mine is pre-planned, the file will be expanded in an orderly fashion and updated information will be available at all times. The development of a property goes through several phases; Exploration, Economic Analysis, Development, Production, and Reclamation. Each phase is an expansion of the data file. The validity of the answers is directly related to the accuracy and quantity of available data. The basis for a data file is horizontal position, and elevation of each piece of information. A coordinate system and datum are reference for a digital (X, Y and Z) position in a spatial system, a three dimensional digital model of the mine. The current practice is to use the State Plane Coordinate system and elevations as established by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Each state has adopted this system by law. In the event there is litigation, it is an advantage to have the data on the legally recognized system. The control must be expanded so that all data can be assigned a digital position, and planned to fulfill the requirements for all phases of the mining operation. The distributions of gold and associated elements in mineral grains from a pyritic gold ore were studied by optical microscopy, and by SEM and SIMS imagery. Products studied were a sulfide flotation concentrate, a calcined sulfide concentrate, a cyanide leached calcine, and a cyanide leached pressure oxidation residue. Individual pyrite grains are compositionally zoned and solid solution gold occurs in some, but not all zones. Most of the gold in calcined products is present as metallic coalesced grains that are smaller than 100 angstroms. Gold lost into cyanide leached residues from the calcines tends to be in “semi-dense” grains that cannot be distinguished from gold-free grains except by SIMS analysis. The gold in cyanide leached pressure oxidation residues occurs as solid solution gold in unoxidized pyrite remnants.

The physical properties of clay-water systems depend on the complicated system of forces between the clay particles themselves, and between the clay particles and the ions in the liquid phase. The kind and distribution of ions in, on, and between the clay particles and the size and the shape of the particles are the basic factors determining the macroscopic behavior of clay-water systems. Understanding the system requires a knowledge of the nature of the clay particles, their size, structure, composition, and surface properties, and of the manner in which they interact with ions [and molecules] in the surrounding liquid [or other medium]. The validity of Professor Brindley's words (Brindley, 1958), written three decades ago in the context of making pottery, whitewares, and electrical porcelains, transcends time, and the basic message is perhaps all the more important in the considerably expanded use of ceramics for structural, thermal, tribological, electronic, and other applications. Silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and sialons have been studied in the last two decades for high- temperature structural and tribological applications, particularly for using in internal combustion engines. Titanates, zirconates and niobates of barium, strontium and lead, have high dielectric constants, and are extensively used in the formulations for making capacitors. Hexagonal ferrites (molecular formula MO.6Fe2O3) are in use for making permanent magnets for fabricating miniature motors, and for assembling loud speakers, particle accelerators etc. Cubic ferrites such as magnesium-zinc ferrite and nickel-zinc ferrite are used as transformer cores, and for other high-frequency applications. In this context, Richerson's recent book (Richerson, 1984) on the general scope of traditional and technical ceramics is a good starting point for an overview of contemporary ceramics technology. Glasses are a whole class of amorphous materials used widely as sintering aids, and for making glass-bonded ceramics and glass-ceramic composites. Composites are yet another burgeoning field where two or more particulate components are used for improving the performance of ceramics. For all these applications, the inorganic starting materials are almost always submicron and near-micron powders. Understanding the powders' physicochemical properties, and their surface chemical interactions with the surrounding liquid/gaseous medium is-necessary for making reliable ceramic parts at competitive prices. Even though ceramics science and engineering has attained its separate identity in universities and the industry, ceramists themselves would concede that ceramics science is a cross-disciplinary field, having incorporated and assimilated within itself many principles from several apparently disjointed disciplines. Principles of material science, graduate-level physics and chemistry, polymer science, surface and colloid chemistry, transport phenomena, particle technology, unit operations commonly used in chemical engineering and mineral processing, and statistics and applied mathematics are integral part of any ceramics curriculum in universities. Added to this is the fact that all bench-scale successes in making ceramic parts are to be scaled-up for larger throughput operations. Understanding and applying process engineering principles of comminution, classification, drying, calcination, etc. then becomes essential. CERAMIC FORMING: Despite the diversity of the materials and processes, conceptually, the steps involved in making ceramic parts have remained the same over several decades: The different components for making the pan (usually one or more powders plus other forming and sintering additives) are proportioned and mixed thoroughly, and the well-mixed formulations are consolidated into desirable shapes known as "green bodies." Usually binders such as wax, clay, organic polymers and surfactants, whether dispersed or dissolved in a suitable liquid are used during mixing the batch for giving strength for the green bodies. In the dried green state, the inorganic powders typically occupy only 55 to 60% of the bulk volume of the body, depending on the particle size distributions of the powders and the forming history, with mostly inter- particle voids accounting for the rest of the void volume. SINTERING: The formed bodies are then fired in high- temperatures kilns/furnaces during which the parts are exposed to a predetermined temperature profile, and "soaked" for a certain duration at the final high temperatures, typically between 1200 K and 1900 K, and then cooled to room temperature. The gaseous atmosphere in the furnace is controlled (oxidizing, reducing, or inert) when necessary. During the initial stages of firing, volatile liquids evaporate, and during the intermediate temperatures between 400 and 600 K, the the organic polymeric additives pyrolize and oxidize into water vapor, CO, C02, and other gases. A column reactor was applied for leaching with simultaneous flotation a complex sulfide ore in ferric sulfate-solution under oxygen pressure. Elemental sulfur and the flotable, nonreacted sulfides were collected in the froth and separated from the insoluble, nonflotable gangue minerals and solid particles formed during pressure leaching. The two-stage laboratory unit, built from Corning-glass elements is described. Results of the continuous leaching/flotation experiments conducted under 20-40 psig of oxygen pressure are presented, as are supplementary batch leaching experiments with iron precipitation under 150 psig oxygen pressure. High zinc extraction to solution and near total accumulation of lead sulfate in the nonflotable fraction are easily attainable. Relatively poor flotation of pyrite is probably caused by the partial oxidation of its sulfidic sulfur to sulfate.

When systematically compared to other engineering fields, mining engineering is distinctive in 1) having a total systems concern. 2) dealing with encumbered space and 3) requiring full spectrum practice. The total systems concern results from having to design and then co-ordinate in space and time several major systems: excavating and bulk handling, ground control, life support and normal support. This requirement favors a generalist rather than a specialist approach. In coping with encumbered space especially in underground coal mining, the uncertainties of geologic conditions are compounded by tightness, roughness, remoteness and hazards.
