The title of this paper begs several questions, and three will be raised here. The answers to them will form the basis for discussion. The three questions are: What does one mean by resource independence. How is the U.S. mining industry defined. How is financial health measured.

The TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA), an automated mineralogy system, enables fast and quantitative mineral analyses of rocks, ores, concentrates, tailings, leach residues or smelter products. It combines BSE and EDX analysis for identification and measurement of mineral concentrations, particle size distribution, and liberation/locking parameters. In addition, it can provide bright particle searches for PGM, gold-silver ores, and/or REE. With the newly developed Automated Loading System (AutoLoader), the TIMA has become the world?s first automated mineral analyzer which permits robust, continuous and unattended sample loading. With the AutoLoader (robotics) system, the TIMA has emerged as a powerful plant support instrument. It increases the sample throughput, minimizes manual labor and enables 24/7 operations. As such, it can be used in daily, continuous mineralogy for mine geology/ore control, concentrators, leach operations, and smelter support. It will also increase the capabilities of technical service centers for mining companies, commercial laboratories, large drilling programs or pilot test campaigns. In combination with a highly automated sample preparation lab (sizing, potting and polishing), TIMA technology can establish high-throughput and fast-turnaround automated mineralogy lab modules for mine-site production support.

"This paper provides an overview of the current use of auxiliary ventilation products and the challenges with limited air quantity in dead-end entry or working faces. The PVC’s low frictional factor, low physical constraint and minimum leakage properties were ideal to develop as ventilation duct in conjunction with the concept of ""Made in the US and Used in the US"". The PVC duct supports the operational and total cost of ownership with on-going success. This paper will discuss the continuous improvement made in ventilation ancillary products for optimum results. The paper will also cover mine site usage of second generation PVC vent duct underground and the results from the operational and technical side making a difference in health and safety and overall auxiliary ventilation. INTRODUCTION The Barrick Turquoise Ridge Inc. (TR) is located in northern central Nevada, and is situated within the Basin and Range province, near the northeast end of the Osgood Mountains (see Figure 1). The TRJV mine consists of typical Carlin type- gold mineralization characterized by low strength rock of altered limestone, siltstones, and mudstones. The weak nature of the ground facilitates the need for underhand cut and fills mining methods.Mining Method; Underhand cut and fill: The mine uses underhand cut and fill method which has 12’x12’ and or 14’x14’ top cuts with several different size undercuts. The ore body is accessed off of a secondary tertiary heading, utilizing a heading with a cross section of 14W x 14H or 15W x 15H configuration. In the wider and more massive zones, two headings in a production panel may be worked at any one time. Drift round lengths are determined by the ground conditions and drift dimension. An example of a typical topcut and associated undercut layout is shown in Figure 2."

Ongoing economic success for mining companies is dramatically enhanced when they really know what they are harvesting, such that they can accurately forecast their head grades for any time period in excess of a month. This is an uncommon experience. It is a very common scenario for resource/reserve estimates to overstate the concentration (grade). Grade is a critical input of revenue, and hence, it is to cashflow projections. With the current direction being taken by the legal climate, it is no longer adequate for directors to accept the resource/reserve estimates of experts at face value. This is because resource/reserve estimates are the foundation of primary mineral economic decisions. Directors of mining assets need to undertake their own due diligence analysis of these estimates, in the best interest of themselves, and the company's shareholders. In the light of the industry's past achievements, this is quite a challenge. This paper suggests a set of new objective tools for directors to undertake an overview of the unique commodity concentration pattern and assess associated economic dynamics of each mineralization. These tools allow the examination of global graphical trends that can be helpful to directors and others in undertaking due diligence of resource/reserve statements. Ensure that it smells right.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. "The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. 1.1 The purpose of this paper is to show the way by which estimates are made of the tonnage and grade of iron ore and taconite reserves of Minnesota. 1.2 The procedures include those of estimating the open pit reserves of: (a) Natural iron ore, and (b) Taconite 1.3 The methods of estimation which will be discussed are primarily based on the information from exploring iron ore deposits. They consider the geology of the deposit as well as the contained mineral of potential value. 2.0 Some geologic, engineering, and economic principles. 2.1 Ore 2.11 "In the broad economic sense, and from a legal standpoint as well, ore is mineralized rock, which under appropriate conditions of time, space, technology, economics, and politics, can be mined, processed, and made to yield a saleable metal , or other mineral products at a profit."(Parks, 1957) Stated differently, metallic ore is rock material from which presently known methods of beneficiation, a merchantable concentrate, suitable for use in the manufacture of metals at a profit, can be produced. Crude ores as low as 0.38% metal, as in the case of copper and even lower in the case of the precious metals.

Unlike previous gold mining booms in Nevada's Great Basin, the current boom includes a serious commitment to mine reclamation. Many of the smaller mines began reclaiming in the late 1980s but met with limited success due in part to poor soil characteristics. Public land managers and the mining industry began looking for ways to improve reclamation success. One promising technique is suggested by an ongoing research project using sludge biosolids, the solid residue of municipal waste water treatment. During the 1980s, limited space in landfills led municipal governments to search for alternate ways to dispose of their biosolids. The cities of Reno and Sparks, NR and the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) searched for ways to combine these needs to everyone's mutual benefit. Yet barriers remained. The federal government had major concerns about potential bioaccumulation of metals and contamination of drinking water from the land application of municipal biosolids. The barriers were lifted late in 1991 when an interagency task force led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new federal policy on the use of biosolids on federal land. The policy encouraged biosolids as a soil amendment to reclaim degraded minelands and invited federal agencies to develop biosolid pilot projects. In response, BLM enlisted the help of American Resources Corp. (ARC) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for a pilot study at ARC'S' Butcher Boy Mine near Wadsworth, NR. Although biosolids have been used in mine land reclamation in the eastern United States for 20 years, before this pilot study, none had been used on public lands in the arid Great Basin. Land application of biosolids improves soil conditions by improving nutrient uptake, increasing water retention, permitting easier root penetration and enhancing soil fertility. Biosolids increase ecosystem productivity and can lead to significant improvements in the structure and diversity of plant and animal communities. Thus, land application of biosolids promotes biodiversity.

The study investigates the effectiveness of the canopy air curtain (CAC) in reducing respirable dust exposure for shuttle car and ramcar operators in underground coal mining. Field testing showed that the CAC reduced dust exposure by 11-34% overall and by 57-65% during ramcar loading by the continuous miner. These results demonstrate the CAC’s potential as a significant dust control device.

An inactive mining operation in northern California is known to be a source of acid mine drainage and heavy metals which have impacted adjacent creeks. Elevated concentrations of copper and zinc are a concern to aquatic populations, particularly steelhead trout and salmon downstream in the Sacramento River. Previous regional geological surveys of mineralization by the U.S. Geological Survey located and mapped outcrops of massive sulfides and gossan. Recent investigations indicate that a substantial amount of the metals in the local creeks are due to natural causes. The investigations include locating and mapping surface and subsurface minerals, soil and water sampling, and chemical analysis. Groundwater, seeps, and surface water were also sampled and analyzed. A water balance was conducted on a sub-basin level following delineation of surface water drainage and groundwater divides. A chemical mass balance incorporated metal concentrations and water volumes and was then used with other data to determine the contribution of metals from natural versus mining-related causes.

Thickening remains relatively misunderstood since it is typically near the end of the process and not directly involved in metal recovery. When operating well, thickeners are ignored and left to run independently, the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ phenomena. However, when operating poorly, there is a lack of basic understanding and remedial actions to solve issues are reactionary rather than proactively addressing shortcomings. This series of papers breaks down in sequential order the stepped phases required to gain an appreciation and thorough understanding of the science behind thickeners, and key thickener components, and basic troubleshooting skills. This second paper starts with identifying the different approaches to thickener test work including static and dynamic settling tests followed by high-rate versus paste thickening. Complimentary to test work, the mechanisms surrounding coagulation and flocculation are presented and explained. The basic mechanisms for coagulation and flocculation are discussed to support the different test work approaches and provide the reader with the basic background.

Mixed integer linear programming (MILP) production scheduling models can be used to evaluate if tonnage improvement projects will deliver value over all time periods and whether new bottlenecks will be created. These MILP models can evaluate the interconnected effects of mine and process capacities, mining locations, cutoff grades, stockpiles, and orebody grade/tonnage distributions. A case study compares potential value creation from a mine capacity increase, a mill capacity increase, or a simultaneous increase in all capacities. For perspective, project valuations for capacity increases are compared against valuations for cost reduction projects, mine planning improvements such as phase design, dynamic cutoff grades and stockpiling, and the impact of geostatistics improvements in the areas of block model accuracy and ore control selectivity.

The Rocky Mountain region contains part of the paleocontinental shelf that lay in Arizona and New Mexico through Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming into Montana and North Dakota. The shelf was bounded by the northeast-southwest-trending Transcontinental arch and the Cordilleran miogeocline in late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic time. Major tectonic features that affected middle Phanerozoic sediments on the shelf were the Big Snowy trough and Williston basin in the north and the ancestral Rocky Mountains in the central part of the region. The Zuni uplift and similar positive areas occurred along the axis of the Transcontinental arch in the southern part. The late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic sedimentary rocks record transgressive-regressive marine cycles in which the Cordilleran shelf and much of the adjacent craton were inundated by epeiric seas. Early in the Carboniferous, an epeiric sea covered most of the shelf. Greater topographic relief developed in Late Mississippian, was at a maximum in Middle Pennsylvanian, and then diminished through Permian and Triassic time. The development in the Pennsylvanian Period of horsts and grabens along northwest- trending faults on the northwest flank of the Transcontinental arch resulted in the ancestral Rocky Mountain system. The eastern part of the region was emergent by Middle Triassic, and the emergence lasted until Middle Jurassic, owing to uplift along the Transcontinental arch. During the early part of the Mesozoic, the sediments were dominantly terrigenous and were deposited mostly in shallow littoral marine environments shifting to continental. Most middle Phanerozoic structural elements within the area of the shelf are characterized by lineaments that have either an east-northeast or a conjugate north-northwest trend. The east-northeast lineaments closely parallel the northeast trend of the continental slope (miogeocline) in Nevada to southern Idaho. The conjugate set closely parallels the northwesterly continuation of the miogeocline north of an approximately right- angle bend in south-central Idaho. The northeasterly trending Transcontinental arch and the northwest-trending margin of the Canadian Shield are parallel structural elements with the north- east and northwest trends of the miogeocline. The rectangular lineament pattern on the shelf suggests a system of rectilinear fractures within the underlying Precambrian crystalline basement rocks that moved several times in the Phanerozoic in response to external forces applied against the continental crust. Movement of these blocks influenced erosion, deposition, and lithofacies of the sediments in middle Phanerozoic time. Zones of crustal weakness, represented by the lineaments bounding these blocks, probably were influential in localizing sedimentary mineral accumulations and petroleum deposits, as well as later igneous intrusions, volcanism, and emplacement of hydrothermal ores. Igneous activity in this region was rare during the middle Phanerozoic, but these conjugate fractures seem to have been avenues for later passage of hydrothermal solutions responsible for ore emplacement.

"Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) are located within 305-m (1000-ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature (AT) below 35°C (95°F). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for mobile tent-type RAs. The results of these studies show that most of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation (51%) and conduction (31%). Three mine width/height configurations and three mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied less than 1°C (1.8°F) for the three mine width/height configurations and less than 2°C (3.6°F) for the three mine strata compositions. INTRODUCTION Following a mine disaster, workers will try to escape the mine. If their escape is futile, they can take shelter in a refuge alternative (RA). In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated RAs in mines to ensure that a safe and livable shelter is provided for a minimum of 96 hours, and that the apparent temperature (AT) does not exceed 35°C (95°F) inside the RA [1]. An ongoing concern with RAs is the potential to exceed this limit. The temperature rise inside an RA is due to the metabolic heat released by the occupants as well as heat released by the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type training unit RA in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. The 10-person capacity for the tested RA is based on 1.4 m2 (15 ft2) of floor space per miner. NIOSH-developed simulated miners, which are heat input devices that generate both sensible and latent heat, were used to represent the metabolic heat generation of an average miner (117 W) for testing in the SRCM. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. To further research temperature rise inside an RA, ThermoAnalytics, Inc. (TAI) was contracted by NIOSH to perform thermal simulations of the tested 10-person mobile tent-type RA. TAI developed a thermal model of the SRCM using RadTherm software, which incorporates a human thermal model (HTM) to represent the equivalent metabolic heat loss of a miner within the RA’s enclosed environment. The thermal model was previously validated by comparing simulation results with test results [3]. During a mine disaster in which miners would have to take shelter in an RA, mine ventilation may not be available. As such, mine ventilation was off for both the testing in the SRCM as well as in the simulations. This paper discusses the heat loss mechanisms and the effects of mine strata composition and mine width and height associated with a ten-person tent-type RA."

"Thousands of years ago large glaciers carved much of the landscape in Puget Sound, depositing abrasive and granular soils including cobbles and boulders along with layers of clay and sand. Tunneling in this geology – common throughout much of the northern and Midwestern U.S. – is challenging and can be unpredictable. The use of pressurized face tunneling, most commonly with EPBs and slurry type machines, has made excavation in this geology more efficient, but difficulties still remain. Through analysis of recent projects in Seattle, Washington, USA, the authors draw conclusions as to the best TBM designs and operational parameters for this variable, abrasive and often difficult ground. Performance data is analyzed with an eye towards advancements that could further improve TBM tunneling in glacially deposited soils. INTRODUCTION Over the past several ice ages, extensive glaciers reaching across much of North America transported large amounts of soil and rock as they moved across the land. The substantial weight of the ice sheets mixed together a wide range of soil types along with a variety of rocks and boulders of all sizes. Many rock formations were reduced to pebbles or particles containing highly abrasive characteristics. Any boulders able to survive were generally comprised of harder materials which were scattered throughout the soil. This highly variable mixture of abrasive soils and high strength boulders can be found in many areas across the Puget Sound and other regions of the country. Wherever they are encountered, they often create a difficult and unpredictable mining environment for both equipment design and operation. Modern TBMs are optimized early in the design process for specific types of geology, and unexpected conditions can require extensive modifications. In addition, several operational parameters need to be adjusted to balance ground characteristics, and advance rates can be significantly affected in mixed and rapidly changing soil conditions. Both EPB and slurry machines can be used successfully in these conditions, provided their respective operating criteria are met. Ideally, an EPB is operated with a relatively thick muck consistency, which accommodates moderate changes in soil permeability and maintains a reliable pressure differential through the screw conveyor. However, this also causes higher wear on rotating components and requires more energy at the cutterhead. Alternatively, slurry machines typically operate best with a more fluid muck consistency that can be easily pumped through the extensive piping system. This tends to reduce the wear on the cutterhead and the power requirements of the cutterhead drive system, but also makes the machine more sensitive to changing soil conditions. Generally, the slurry piping system is also more capable of controlling high face pressures, although the screw conveyor of an EPB can also be designed to accommodate most high-pressure conditions."

The modem open pit-heap leach operation by Pegasus Gold Ltd. at Zortman and Landusky in Phillips County, Montana, is a new chapter in the mining of gold in these districts. The discovery of bulk tonnage ore bodies and their development and ultimate production was based on a long history of mining and exploration in that part of Montana. Gold was originally discovered in the Little Rocky Mountains as placer deposits by Pike Landusky and Lou Myers. This discovery in the 1880s was not significant, but Pike Landusky continued prospecting for lode deposits, and he eventually located the Gold Bug and Little Ben, two of the larger Au-Ag producers in the district. Eventually two camps, Landusky and Zortman, grew in the LittleRocky Mountains. By the time Landusky was killed in 1894 by Kid Curry, the district was still a discontinuous small producer. Steady production commenced in 1907 with the organization of the August Gold Mining Co. Eventually high grade ores on specific veins were exhausted by selective underground mining and the district was idle by May 1942. After World War II in the early 1950s. E.A. Scholz tried to continue selective underground mining, but he realized the stockworks surrounding the larger veins constituted bulk tonnage targets. Ultimately in the 1976- 1979 period he organized two exploration efforts, one each for the Landusky and Zortman areas, and brought these into production as the Argo and Pegasus gold mines. By the time of his death, Apr. 8, 1980, both operations were producing gold. Later the two companies were merged as Pegasus Gold Ltd. Upon the death of Scholz, V.F. Hollister continued as the geological consultant, Ed Roper was engaged as general manager, and J. J. Crowhurst was given the responsibility of executive vice president. The discovery of open pittable ores and the application of heap leach technology was important in the development of mining. Both contributed to the low cost operation that continues to this day. The attached article by L.M. Rogers, then chief geologist, and M.S. Enders, his assistant, describes the geology of the deposit. It was presented at the Northwest Mining Association meeting in 1982.

"Paste Technology has some advantages comparing to other surface disposal methods. With this method, it is possible to pump high concentrated solid materials to very long distances without segregation problem. However, it is known from Literature that pumpability of materials is completely related to rheological properties of the materials. For this reason, in this study, the rheological parameters (e.g. yield stress and viscosity values) of the paste material prepared from Pb-Zn tailings at various solid ratios (60-85%) were obtained in order to determine the pumpability of the paste material. Additionally, slump tests, which are usually used in mining industry, was carried out. Finally, regression analysis was made between the slump values and rheological parameters of the paste material to find a correlation between two independent parameters. The results showed that there is a great correlation between the slump values and the yield stress of the material. On the other hand, there was no correlation with viscosity: ty=430.28-16.877Sv (R2= 0,94; ty: Yield Stress (Pa), Sv: Slump Value (cm)). Based on the results obtained from this study, it can be clearly concluded that the slump values obtained from a simple test can be used to predict yield stress values of paste materials. INTRODUCTION Recently, surface disposal of mining tailings has become one of the biggest problems in mining industry in terms of environmental issues. Therefore, several researches have been focused on this subject in order to find a best solution or method for this problem. These studies showed that paste technology has some advantages compared to other conventional methods. Tailings thickened to the extent show no segregation of particles during transportation, and relatively small amount of settling occur post-deposition which are often called “paste” (Cincilla et al. 1997). Paste tailing technology has two applications in the industrial area as underground paste fill and surface paste disposal. Paste tailing technology was first started to be used in Grund mine, Germany in the late 1970s (Grice, 1998). Process tailing material, water and - if needed - cement materials, which are the components of the paste, must be blended to obtain a homogenous mixture suitable for pumpability. Consistency behavior of the paste material is determined using a conventional sedimentation cone concrete test (slump). Meanwhile, the slump value of the paste must be between 200 and 250 mm for surface applications (Newman et al., 2001). Additionally, in the case of underground paste system, the optimum slump value must be between 150 and 200 mm. On the other hand, the water content and density of paste at certain slump value change depending on the amount of fine particles in the tailing sample. While moisture of the material will be high, its density will be low because of surface area of particles which increases with decrease in particle size (Meggyes and Debreczeni, 2006). For pumpability of the paste to long distances, slump value of the paste must be good enough to be accepted for use of surface paste disposal. Paste material has a yield stress because they show non-Newtonian behavior and generally is classified as a Bingham plastic fluid. (Cooke, 2008; Theriault, 2003). In addition, the appropriate viscosity value of the paste along with the yield stress must be between 100 and 250 Pa (Bascetin et al., 2013; Bascetin et al., 2014; Bascetin et al., 2015)."

Interwest Mining Company has been collecting geologic data within the last decade in preparation for underground mining of extensive coal reserves in its Bridger Coal property in southwestern Wyoming. During a preliminary data collection program in 2000, Interwest Mining completed geologic investigations, including surface mapping, drilling, aerial photography, rock testing, and limited groundwater investigations. Core from 12 exploration boreholes in the area of interest was tested to determine the mechanical properties of the coal seam and the immediate roof and floor for evaluation of the feasibility of underground mining. Geologic investigations identified the presence of one 7-to-17-ft-thick coal seam throughout the reserve under 1400 ft of cover. During a geotechnical feasibility study in 2002, the authors reviewed available data while completing comparative analyses identifying critical deficiencies in these data. The study projected moderate-to-difficult mining conditions, considering the weak nature of near-seam strata and depth of cover, and thus recommended limiting the longwall reserves to an overburden depth of less than 900 ft. These shallow remaining reserves were located at depths within regional mining experience to justify longwall mining methods. Based on a critical examination of available data, Bridger proceeded with more detailed data collection to improve understanding of the depositional and structural setting of the reserve, hydrogeologic conditions, overburden strength, and premining stress conditions. Additional data was collected during 2003 and 2004 field programs. Since 2003, Bridger has had the opportunity to observe ground behavior in a series of up to 1200-1600-ft- long rectangular openings created during highwall mining. These narrow unsupported openings remained stable in the short term in large areas but the overburden subsided locally in the long-term depending on geologic and panel layout designs. These localized subsidence events allowed an examination of in-situ coal strength based on back analyses of stress. The unextracted highwall areas near Ramp 17 provided an ideal location to access the underground reserves using a 6-entry set of mains. The existing north-south oriented longwall layout for the Bridger Coal was selected by Bridger to maximize resource recovery from the D41 reserves while considering operational and geotechnical constraints. At 45-degrees deviation from preexisting joints and mild horizontal stress field, this orientation was considered beneficial for overall stability while using both sets of joints for facilitating the caving process. The present layout utilizes pillars on 80- to 90- by 200-ft centers, 17-ft entry spans and 750-ft wide longwall panels (Figure 1). Gate pillars are on wide spacings and are intended to act as abutment-abutment pillars to limit strata deformation over the gateroads during longwall mining.

Loki Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. is developing the Brewery Creek Mine, an open pit heap leach gold mine, 55 km East of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797 000 oz) of gold. Ore processing will employ a cyanide heap leach using run of mine ore. Permitting this mine has drawn significant attention because the heap leach technology, while proven in other jurisdictions, has not been used in Yukon. Engineering design of the heap leach was similar to that for heaps in more temperate climates, with the added issues of permafrost and cold weather operations. Solution balance with seasonal placement of ore and year -round leaching requires very large pond capacity for spring thaw conditions.
