The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a computer image processing algorithm to determine the size distribution of moving taconite (iron ore) pellets. This algorithm interprets line-scan images to measure pellet diameters. Pellet edge detection with a peak light intensity constraint is the basis of this technique. Preliminary error analysis indicates a normally distributed experimental error with a standard deviation of 0.09 and 0.15 for pellet diameters of 0.4 and 0.9 cm, respectively. System accuracy was independent of moving pellet speed below 50 cm/sec. Computer image-based size distributions were found to be in close agreement with standard sieve analysis.

INTRODUCTION The use of roof and rock bolts to reinforce the strata is an established method of rock support in both underground and surface excavations. However, the need to drill a hole, extract the drill-rods, and then place the bolt is time-consuming and costly. This becomes even more significant if the bolting is repetitive and extensive as in coal mining. Though the main thrust of this development was directed towards coal mining, the basic concepts are also widely applicable to all excavations. The authors, therefore, feel that this innovation should be of interest in rapid excavation and in tunneling. In the case of coal mining, it has been established from past statistics that the roof-bolting operation is the most hazardous activity. This is primarily because of the operator being exposed to unsupported ground. It is evident that remote installation of roof bolts would markedly improve the safety of the operation, if accomplished more readily with self-drilling bolts rather than the conventional two-step variety operation. Thus, in addition to increasing productivity, this development can be considered to be a milestone towards further improvements. The objective of this program was to establish the technical and economic feasibility of self-drilling roof bolts for use in coal mines. It might be clarified at the outset that this work was, therefore, directed primarily at showing that workable self-drilling bolts with less cost can be developed, which could be effectively used in mines. It was not to fabricate a production model bolt.

During much of the 1970s and 1980s, world metal consumption grew more slowly than during the 19505 and 1960s. The slowdown contributed to surplus capacity and low real prices because actual consumption was consistently less than expected as new mining and mineral processing capacity came on stream. Over the last year or so, however, world metal consumption has picked up noticeably, raising the question, Has metal demand returned to the long-run growth rates more typical of the 1950s and 1960s than of the 1970s and 1980s? This paper examines this possibility and, more generally, assesses the factors that will shape demand for the major metals over the longer term. TRENDS IN METAL CONSUMPTION The extent to which metal consumption has recaptured the brisk growth rates typical of the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s is shown in Figure 1. This figure traces the consumption of crude steel, primary aluminum, refined copper, refined lead, and refined zinc between 1960 and 1987 for the western world, consisting of the OECD countries (including the United States), and the developing countries. Consumption increased in 1987 for all five metals, and preliminary data for the first six months of 1988 suggest even more substantial increases, at least for the United States (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1988). However, Figure 1 also shows that the recent increases in consumption are not untypical of similar surges during earlier periods of economic expansion and thus may reflect only cyclical or temporary factors. In short, the available data are unable to provide a clear indication of whether recent increases in metal consumption reflect the beginning of a new era of faster growth or simply a cyclical and temporary upturn associated with the expansionary phase of the business cycle. Consequently, to pursue this issue, we are forced to examine the underlying forces that will shape metal demand trends over the next decade. The approach we have taken involves two steps. The first examines the prospects for overall economic growth. The expectation is, the faster the economy expands, the faster the production of metal-containing goods grows.2

The number of spontaneous combustion incidents in the U.S. is expected to increase as the consumption of lower rank coals and the use of longwall mining becomes more prevalent. A spontaneous combustion incident holds the potential for substantial loss of life from a mine fire or explosion if not prevented or controlled at an early stage. Laboratory tests have been developed which are useful in ranking the susceptibility of various coals to spontaneous combustion. Ventilation circuits and mining methods can be designed to minimize the risk of spontaneous combustion. Early detection of spontaneous combustion is possible with the combined use of continuous monitoring, periodic gas sampling, and inspection.

Nowadays, geophysical prospecting is implemented in order to resolve a diversity of geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical problems. Though plenty of applications and a lot of research have been conducted in the country-side, only a few have been reported in the literature concerning urban areas, mainly due to high levels of noise present that aggravate most of the geophysical methods (e.g. electromagnetic, seismic, gravity etc.) or due to spatial limitations that hinder normal method implementation (e.g. electrical). Among all geophysical methods, electrical tomography proves to be the most rapid and urban noise insusceptible technique. This work presents a case study in the urban area of Hania (Crete I., Greece), where Electrical Resistivity Tomographies (ERTs) have been carried out for the detection and identification of possible buried ancient ruins or other manmade structures, prior the foundation of a building. Nineteen profiles were surveyed in a 20x40m grid using dipole-dipole configuration. The results indicate two areas of interest, that are interpreted as probable old wells, in the context of the existence, in former times and in the same area, of an olive oil plant. In the vicinity, near surface ancient ruins have been disclosed, but no such evidence provided this survey, for the particular area under study and the prospected depth. The collected ERT-data were processed by applying advanced algorithms in order to obtain a 3D-model of the study area that depicts more clearly and accurately the interesting subsurface structures.

The occurrence of rock bursts in some deep mines throughout the world constitutes a severe operational hazard. In addition to endangering the safety of the miners, the rock-burst problem is a major factor in mining economically in deep mines because of the loss of production and expense owing to cleanup and repairs following a burst. Developing means of controlling or eliminating rock bursts has been the subject of intensive research for over 50 years. While much has been learned about the effects of rock bursts, little is known about their basic causes; hence, control measures have been at best only partially effective--attested to by the number and severity of bursts that continue to occur throughout the world each year. In the Coeur d'Alene mining district of north Idaho, the rock-burst problem continues as the silver and lead veins persist at depth. These veins are presently being mined at greater than 7,000 feet below the surface and will be mined to some 10,000 feet in the future. The majority of rock bursts in this district occur in pillars. While pillar bursting has been essentially eliminated in some deep-mining districts by longwall techniques, modification or application of this technique to the thin, irregular, and near vertically dipping veins of the Coeur d'Alene district has not been found to be practical. The creation of pillars is a consequence of the horizontal cut and fill mining method used. Figure 1 shows a vertical longitudinal projection of the silver vein at the Galena mine, illustrating the mining method. Stoping progresses between raises and is carried upward between levels. A horizontal pillar is created as a stope approaches a mined-out level. Recent broad-band micro seismic monitoring of rock-burst-prone stopes by the Bureau of Mines has shown that potential burst zones could be delineated weeks in advance of a burst and that a definite sequence of events took place prior to the occurrence of a pillar burst (1). Hence, time was available for control measures to be effected when a stope pillar reached a critical burst geometry.

Coconut shells are the most widely used raw material for the production of activated carbon used in the gold production by cynanide leaching. There have been efforts to find alternatives to coconut shells. Shells and stones of certain fruits, have been tested. Although promising results to some extent were obtained, coconut shells remain the main source of activated carbon. Türkiye has become a country of interest in terms of gold deposits of epithermal origin. Four deposits have already been discovered and, mining and milling operations are expected to start in the near future. Explorations are underway in many other areas of high expectations. Türkiye is also rich in fruits which can be a valuable source of raw material for activated carbon production. In this study, hazelnut shells, peach and apricot stones, abundantly available locally, have been tested to determine whether they are suitable for the gold metalurgy. Parameters of carbonization and activation have been optimized. Gold loading capacity and adsorption kinetics have been studied.

Mixer-settler extractors, among the oldest forms of extraction equipment, have been used since the beginning of this century. Over the past years, a very large number of mixer-settler devices have been designed and operated. Both batch and continuous flow mixer-settlers have been used. The continuous flow mixer-settler extractor offers a great number of advantages over other extraction equipment. The main advantage of the continuous flow mixer-settler is that it is a compact device. A large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area, and more stages can be added fairly easily. Many improvements have been made in the design of mixer-settlers. These improvements occurred in almost every phase of mixer-settler' operation; interface control, mixer design, intrastage pumping, interstage flow of the two liquid phases, and stage construction. It is believed that Barstow1 used one of the first continuous mixer-settler extractors. This mixer-settler had concurrent flow within each stage and countercurrent flow overall. The flow for both phases took place by gravity. The Barstow device and other early mixer-settlers had no separate interface control for each stage, therefore, "tilting" of the stages was necessary. In 1934 Holley and Mott2 designed a mixer-settler in which the heavy phase was recirculated within each stage by the use of a valve controlled central line instead of by a pump. Gordon and Zeigler3 in 1939 were among the first to use an adjustable valve to control the interface levels in a mixer-settler, making tilting of the extractor unnecessary. The molecular form of aliphatic amines precipitates in alkaline solutions when the amine solubility limit is exceeded and forms a typical colloidal system. The zones of mines precipitation and micellization are defined and it is shown that the appearance of a colloidal system in a certain pH range is a unique feature that makes weak electrolyte type surfactants differ from strong electrolytes. The formation of iono-molecular complexes reported in the literature is shown to be a pre-precipitation phenomenon. The zeta potential - pH curves for minerals and bubbles in the presence of amines in the pH range where the amine forms a colloidal precipitate are entirely determined by the precipitate. The pH dependence of the flotation of certain minerals using amines is discussed in the light of these findings.

BACKGROUND Gold Fields Mining Corporation started their Chimney Creek operation in late 1987. The dump leaching operations commenced in October and the mill startup took place during the last half of November. The milling process at Chimney Creek is almost a conventional CIP plant with the major exception being the installation of a second thickener as a washing stage prior to CIP12 ' A simplified flow sheet is shown in FIGURE 1. Most of the gold in the mill is liberated by grinding in cyanide. After grinding in a conventional SAGball sill circuit, the cyclone overflow reports to the thickeners. The thickener overflow from the first thickener is pumped through 5 stages of carbon columns for gold adsorption. Slurry from the thickener underflow is leached, washed, re-thickened and pumped to CIP. After approximately 6 hours of retention time in CIP, the slurry is pumped to tailings for final deposition. The carbon from CIP is transferred to the third stage of carbon adsorption and then advanced as normal through the columns and strip circuit. Loaded carbon is stripped at approximately 1500C (3000 F) and 55 kPa (80 psi). After 4-5 hours of stripping, the grade of four tons of carbon is reduced from 5,140-6,860 g/t (150¬200 oz/ton) to typically 17 g/t (0.5 oz/ton). Zinc precipitation is used to recover the gold from the pregnant solution. After a water wash, the stripped carbon is transferred to acid wash or to the kiln feed tank for reactivation. All strip lots are acid washed in 3.0% HC1 and all stripped carbon passes through the kiln for thermal reactivation. Then the carbon is quenched, sized and stored in tanks or bins for transferral to CIP or to the carbon columns. Loaded carbon from the dump leach circuit is treated in a circuit consisting of five carbon columns which are parallel to the mill circuit. No distinction is made between the mill or dump leach carbon once the gold has been stripped from them. CARBON FINES HANDLING Once the carbon has been transferred from the carbon columns, every effort is made to minimize carbon attrition and to recover the carbon fines that have been generated in the process. The conventional beneficiation scheme for Florida phosphates involves reverse flotation with an intermediatory acid scrubbing step. A single reagent flotation process, using fatty acids or amine as the collector, would eliminate the scrubbing step along with the other flotation step. This can not only simplify the process flowsheet, but also result in reduced reagent costs. The potential of single reagent flotation of Florida phosphates using fatty acids as the collector was examined in this study.

Before the first shovelful of dirt is removed from a developing mining property, a wide range of data must be collected, organized and analyzed. Among the key steps in this process are: • Visualization of the deposit from drill hole data and geologic interpretation, using all available information, including surface geology, geochemistry and geophysics. • Drawing of vertical and horizontal sections. • Construction of a 3D solid model of the deposit. • Contouring of deposit outlines and geological structure until the model represents best estimate of reality. • Estimation of grade and quality distribution. • Calculation of reserves. • Examination of possible mining methods. • Determination of economic feasibility. Many techniques are available to aid in this process of mine project feasibility analysis, from quick pencil calculations to sophisticated computer methods. However, time races faster in the complex modem business world than it did 50 years ago. Tried and true pencil methods take too much time. Opportunity may pass a mine developer by while a property is still in the first stages of analysis. In the days of hand techniques, initial analysis of the economic feasibility of a mining project usually stopped with reserve calculations and broad mine planning. Further planning was not done or was done only for the short term. Manual techniques require too much time and manpower to evaluate a longterm mining program. Mining-industry recognition of computer utility has increased. Most companies now use computers in technical applications and could not conceive of working without them. Building initial computer models of a deposit may take nearly as long as hand techniques. But the payback comes when changes are needed and a variety of mine plans are quickly tested.

"Plutonic-related" gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As- (Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of the depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton. These associations have been used successfully in exploration. Results from several analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations. Gold and bismuth have paired mineralogy at high temperatures and, thus, are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. The research has demonstrated that the ventilation of large-opening mines improves significantly by including ventilation requirements in the mine planning process and implementing some practical techniques during mining. Planning the location of long pillars to reduce the number of crosscuts between intake airways and return airways, positioning auxiliary fans in their proper locations, and establishing ventilation stoppings with minimal leakage all significantly improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. Mine operators that adopt these techniques in the mine ventilation plan will reduce mineworkers? exposure to airborne contaminants.

Sandstone escarpments surrounding western coal-bearing plateaus serve as critical habitat for animal species. Effects of mining subsidence on escarpment stability are not well documented; therefore, regulatory agencies may limit extraction of coal reserves underlying escarpments. Because millions of tons of this coal exist on Federal Lands, associated public revenues from Federal royalties, and valuable coal reserves, risk being lost. The U. S. Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze effects of subsidence on escarpment stability. Finite element models that incorporate bedding plane slip, gob formation, and movement along joints simulate escarpment subsidence observed in the field.

This paper analyzes the 1982 coal mine accident data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for key equipment types, by mine type, and by geographic region. The differences in hazards associated with the various equipment types are studied both in absolute (i.e., total number of incidences) and relative (i.e., incidence rate or the number of incidences per 200,000 employee or exposure hours) terms. The paper compares and contrasts the total number of incidents as well as incidence rates classified by several types of severity measures such as lost workdays cases, mean number of lost workdays per lost workdays case, fatal cases, non- fatal cases without lost workdays, total number of cases, and total number of lost workdays This statistical analysis shows that significant differences in hazards exist not only due to equipment type but also due to mine type and geographic region.

The recent non-equilibrium electro-phoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by hetero-coagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. However, the nature of the inter-particle forces responsible for hetero-coagulation of such oppositely charged particles at high ionic strengths remains to be determined. In this regard, atomic force microscopy was used for inter-particle force measurements at high ionic strengths. Model systems such as polystyrene/quartz and silica/sapphire were studied to measure the particle interaction forces prevalent at high ionic strengths. Results from this study indicate that while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions. The repulsive forces between similarly charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4 M) are described by a double exponential function with decay lengths of 0.17 and 1.4 nm depending upon the surfaces involved. On the other hand, attractive forces were observed between oppositely charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4M) and were described by a single exponential function with decay lengths of up to 9 nm depending upon the surfaces involved.

Mill ball charging systems have undergone little change during the past two decades. Most operations utilize a locomotive/ball car combination to load and haul charges from the ball storage bin to the mill charging boxes or, alternatively, transport charges to the charging boxes by means of a ball bucket handled by bridge crane. This paper describes a new concept in ball handling systems that is in operation at the Island Copper Concentrator of Utah Mines, Ltd. at Port Hardy, B.C. This system employs a narrow belt conveyor to convey a weighed charge to each of nine belt unloading stations at the mills. In operation, the system has proved to be practicable, trouble-free and economical of operating labor.
