Introduction Ontario's diverse industrial mineral resource base includes structural minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone, and dolostone. These resources are used to produce aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, cement, lime, and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Palezoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were more than 140 Mt (154 million st) of aggregates produced in 1985. About 115 Mt (128 million st) of that was produced in southern Ontario with the rest being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. Structural industrial minerals account for more than 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production. The remaining 20% is accounted for by the nonstructural minerals, such as salt, which is produced in the southwestern part of the province. A host of other nonstructural industrial minerals are known. Production, though, is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite, and byproduct metallurgical sulfur products (Fig. 1). Major production is close to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and northcentral US. With an abundant variety of industrial mineral resources and the large population within 650 km (400 miles) of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario's nine million people accounted for about 35% of Canada's entire $476.3 billion gross domestic product in 1985. This equates to about one-third of the nation's buying power being within a 200-km (125-mile) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well-developed industrial minerals industry that fulfills most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario. Nonstructural industrial minerals are similarly well placed to compete in this high demand area. Although Ontario manufacturers still import some of these materials, Ontario products are achieving significant market share. And, they serve the needs of neighboring provinces and states. Present production and trends Ontario has traditionally produced significant amounts of industrial minerals. This produc¬tion had a value of $956 million in 1984 (Table 1). Structural materials production in 1985 and 1986 approached or exceeded levels not seen since the early 1970s. Many new products have been developed using these raw materials. It has been reported previously that dolomite samples from different locations showed varying flocculation behavior with Poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO). In this study it is determined that palygorskite associated with the Florida dolomite samples is responsible for their flocculation with PEO. A detailed characterization of the dolomite samples from different locations and its relevance to flocculation with PEO is discussed.

In order to investigate the explosibility of sulphide mineral dusts, sulphide ore samples were collected from five underground metalliferous mines in Australia. The mineralogical and chemical composition of the dust samples was analysed by X-Ray Powder Diffraction and Atomic Absorption techniques. Simulated post detonation fumes were produced and used in dust explosibility tests to examine the influence of the fumes on sulphide dust ex- plosions. These tests were conducted in a 20 Litre Siwek Explosion Chamber with measurement and control system that is regarded as a standard testing system worldwide for dust explosion studies. The dust mineralogical composition and dust explosibility tests indicated that the content of sulphur can not accurately predict the explosibity of the sulphide dust. The percentage content of pyrite in the sulphide dust can be a relatively reliable diagnostic criterion in evaluating the risk of sulphide dust explosions in the mining of a massive sulphide orebody. The hybrid explosion tests demonstrated that the post detonation fumes from ANFO not only decrease the lower explosion limit of the sulphide dusts, but also increase the severity of the dust explosions. The explosion pressure reaches its peak value when the fumes content in the explosion chamber is about 20 per cent by volume

Selenium-rich metallurgical waste, also known commercially as “crude selenium,” is a byproduct of the copper (Cu) refining process. This by-product, contains ~ 90% selenium (Se), precious metals, platinum group metals (PGMs), and other critical elements. This study investigated the leaching efficiency of Se from the sludge under alkaline conditions using different oxidizing agents to enrich PGMs and precious metals in the leach solid residue. The effectiveness of each oxidizing agent during leaching was assessed and compared. Additionally, Eh-pH diagram for Se was established under specific experimental conditions and utilized to inform process optimization. Key variables, including leaching time, temperature, and oxidant concentration, were evaluated for their impact on the efficiency and the selectivity of the oxidative alkaline leaching process.

Extraction of underground coal or mineral by the caving methods leads to surface deformations and the accurate measurement of this deformation is becoming a demanding task. Thus, the study demonstrates a Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) technique for surface subsidence measurement. The method was applied to measure the subsidence level over three mechanized depillaring panels with caving at GDK-11 Incline mine, India. The study was conducted using C-band data of Sentinel 1A/B sensors, which captured the data in the descending path from October 25, 2017 to March 07, 2020. The deformation level was measured based on the identified PS points in the specified region. In this case, 12 zones were identified (4 for each panel), based on the observation of permanent scatterer (PS) points. The maximum subsidence level and deformation rate range in 12 zones are −43.12 to −65 mm and −73.8 to 100 mm/year, respectively. The deformation level obtained through the PS-InSAR technique showed a good agreement with those of the field measurement. Thus, the PS-InSAR technique can detect and monitor the subsidence level over the goaved-out panel(s) of an underground mine using C-band SAR data of the Sentinal-1A/B sensor.

In order to safely store radioactive waste long-term, HAW repositories in saliferous formations have to be backfilled. The main purpose of those backfill operations is the restoration of the geological barrier function of the containment area. For best possible results the used material should be of a comparable composition or characteristic for the host rock formation. Additionally, the material should show a high density after completion of the backfilling process as well as a low permeability. A major aspect to consider in these processes is the minimization of the gap of the backfill body to the roof of the drift. To fulfil those requirements, a micro-structure stabilized crushed salt backfill material has been developed as part of the GESAV-I-project. Due to the material composition of this so-called GESAV-material, salt mineralcrystallization processes start after emplacing it, a process that leads to the polyhalite formation. With the crystallization of polyhalit, the halite grains are bridged, which in return stabilizes the matrix of the backfill. The GESAV-II-project continued successfully what GESAV-I started and determined an ideal backfill method in order to build the backfill bodies composed of GESAV-material. Due to the compaction of the material during emplacement by vibration, high in-situ densities, low permeabilities and a backfill factor close to 1 was able to be reached. In the following SAVER project this journey of practical test underground will be continued.

Rare Earths: Understanding The United States complete failure of status and relevance in Rare Earth Oxides, Elements and Alloys. Although rare earth oxides are strategic and critical in their own right, elements and alloys are even more important for the development of "Green Technologies" and advanced weapons systems. America does not have an active domestic source of rare earth oxides. America does not have any Heavy Rare Earth Elemental or Alloy capabilities. The magnitude of this failure continues to become more apparent as the manufacture of REO based electronics and magnetic components moves eastward towards China. China has succeeded in outmaneuvering The United States and the world in its quest to control the Rare Earth Oxides, Elements and Alloys, and the many industries dependent upon REO. What can be done?

The White Pine Mine is situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan approximately 6 miles south of Lake Superior (Fig. 1). It is east of the Porcupine Mountains in Ontonagon County. The ore deposit is about 70 miles southwest of the famous native copper deposits of the "Copper Country" lying northeast of Houghton. Geological conditions are different at every mine and create a special set of problems in dilution control. This paper is largely intended to describe the techniques applied in mine dilution control (grade control) at White Pine, and present results of the program. For necessary background information major geologic characteristics of the deposit, particularly those that exert control over the distribution of ore, are briefly discussed. Mining methods are described in considerable detail since applied grade control techniques are adapted to these.

"The objective of this study was to develop a laboratory-scale method to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials and to eliminate the need for expensive large-scale tests that are currently being used. A radiant panel apparatus was used to determine the relevant thermal characteristics of the materials: time to ignition, critical heat flux for ignition, heat of gasification, and mass loss rate. Three thermal parameters, TRP, TP1, and TP4, were derived from the data, then were developed and subsequently used to rank the combined ignition and fire hazards of the combustible materials from low hazard to high hazard. The results compared favorably with thermal and ignition hazards of similar materials reported in the literature and represent a simpler approach to quantifying these combustible hazards. INTRODUCTION The potential fire hazard from combustible mine materials is a major concern that can impact the safety of mine workers. Combustible materials tend to be solids and within this category there exist degrees of flammability and fire resistance. These materials may be readily ignitable or they may be able to withstand high temperatures and high heat fluxes. Presently, no simple methodology exists to assess these possible fire behaviors and quantify the resultant fire hazards. Thus, better knowledge of the thermal properties and chemical characteristics of combustible materials is of great importance to the safety of mine workers. Tewarson [1994] developed a methodology which he subsequently used to evaluate the ignition and fire resistant properties of combustible mine materials, but these efforts are more than 20 years old, and do not include many of the new materials used in mines today. The standard practice that has evolved for a combustible material to be approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for use in underground coal mines is to conduct extensive and costly large-scale experiments on each new material that is used in a particular mine operation. Results of such tests provide pass/fail answers to the questions of a material’s flammability or fire resistance, yet they provide little, if any, information that will lead to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. Therefore, there is a need to quantify material flammability properties and to develop a methodology to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials. During the heating and ignition stages of combustible materials, properties such as smolder susceptibility, minimum surface temperature for ignition, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, density, and heat of gasification are known to be important [Apte, 2006]. During the flaming stage, additional parameters, such as the heat of combustion, heat release rate, flame spread rate, yields of soot/smoke, and toxic gas production become more important as the flame is sustained and spreads. In very general terms, the heat flux incident on the surface of a solid combustible not only controls the rate of temperature increase of the local fuel surfaces, resulting in expulsion of fuel vapors that sustain the flaming process, but also the heating of other combustible surfaces that subsequently ignite and spread flame."

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more Ti02 than the formula FeTiO3 would indicate, and some Fe203. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates.(l) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amorphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide, Other studies (2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal processes,(3, 4, 5) Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering, (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived, (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions.

It is widely recognized that Semiautogenous Grinding (SAG) circuits require the use of effective process control techniques to achieve their full processing potential and to protect them from the harmful effects of overloads and grind-outs. This requirement is even more essential as the variability of the ore being processed increases. The new Chino Mines Company concentrator located near Santa Rita, New Mexico started operation in June of 1982. At least eight major rock types are mined and milled. Ore hardness, feed size, and specific gravity are quite variable. Typical feed rates per grinding line are 850-900 tph but extremes of 260-1200 tph have been encountered. Normal feed rate variations of between 400 and 1100 tph are encountered on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. Feed size varies with rock type from a maximum of eight inches for the harder ores to two inches for the softer ores. One somewhat unique characteristic of the Santa Rita ore body among major copper mines is the wide variation in ore specific gravity. Specific gravities of the major rock types range between 2.7 and 3.6. The specific gravity variations are due to large changes in magnetite concentration throughout the pit. The result of this is large variations in SAG mill throughput which can have a harmful effect on downstream ball milling and flotation performance. Due to these wide fluctuations in ore characteristics, it was recognized soon after startup that successful operation of the grinding circuit and the plant at large was dependent upon the development of an effective automatic grinding control strategy. Research at the University of Utah has suggested that control based upon critical but difficult or costly to measure variables would improve automatic control performance. A project team made up of the Chino process control staff, Kennecott's Process Control department and the University of Utah Metallurgy Department was established to assess these concepts at Chino. This paper describes the development and on-line plant implementation of an Extended Kalman Filter that uses simple models of the SAG milling process, to predict the volumetric loading, the rock mass, the water mass, and the ball mass within the SAG mills at Chino. The on-line estimation of these parameters is the first step in the development of an integrated SAG mill/ball mill control strategy which is hoped to L eventually maintain the grinding circuit at its maximum capacity, while balancing the grinding load between the SAG and ball mills. Examples of long term estimation with the models and filter are shown for typical operating conditions as well as a SAG mill overload and grind-out.

Since Guild 1 and Snelgrove 2 attracted our attention to the relationships between certain endogenic ore deposits and plate boundaries, an abundant flow of papers appeared in the metallogenic literature concerned with this problem and its application to mineral exploration. Some of the papers only speculate with the formation of specific type of ore deposit 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 Other papers are more concerned with genetic and structural relationships between plate tectonics and mineralization 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 They are philosophical, in that they are generalized and refer to no specific area. Yet it is true that a large part of the world mineral potential is concentrated at the convergence of oceanic and continental plates, for example, around the Pacific. Therefore, the interaction of two plates by either subduction, obduction or slippage likely has an important role for the genesis and/or the (structural) control of these "orogenic" ore deposits. If subduction is the driving mechanism for the generation of igneous rocks 21, 22 and endogenic ore deposits 18, volcanic activity and the nature of volcanic products certainly are the major geologic processes and events to be tested. Fonteilles 23 and Alsac 24 have already emphasized the important relationship between mineralization and the talc-alkaline affinity of the volcanics. The Andean orogen is one of the best areas for testing such genetic relationships. Rich and varied endogenic and volcanogenic ore deposits occur there and plate interaction is still active.

Ideally, mill circuits should be controlled so that excessive random disturbances are reduced in frequency and amplitude. It is difficult to derive an objective measure of the effectiveness of any chosen control strategy. Often, the response of the circuit to pulse or sinusoidal disturbances is used as a measure of the effectiveness of control, but this is not adequate in many circumstances because such disturbances bear little resemblance to those that occur in practice, and such an approach cannot be easily related to the profitability of the reduction process. A superior approach appears to be the application of the theory of stochastic processes. This theory permits both real process disturbances to be modelled accurately, and useful objective functions for control to be derived. A test of the usefulness of stochastic theory in mill control was made on the gold ore milling circuit shown in Figure 1. This circuit was fed with an ore which had a liberation characteristic such as that shown in Figure 2. It is simple to show that, for such a liberation characteristic, the recovery of valuable mineral will vary as the standard deviation of the particle mass-size distribution varies even though the mean particle mass-size is kept constant. Similarly it may be shown that excessive perturbations in the circulating load in a milling circuit such as that shown in Figure 1 can affect liberation. Figure 3 shows how, as the cyclone feed density increases and the sump water addition decreases at constant sump level, the cyclone operation becomes unstable and the discharge "ropes? with a consequent catastrophic coarsening in product size. By minimising the variance of the circulating load it is possible to reduce the probability of initiating instabilities of this nature.

"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."

Pumped storage power plants are one of the options to store the fluctuating production of electric energy from renewable sources in a sustainable manner and is able to provide Europe with the opportunity to overcome the effects of climate change. However, due to the extensive land use required when planning the water reservoirs, several projects have been declined after social conflicts raised, even in Germany. Nonetheless, after the flooding and drought periods in northern Germany, the catastrophic floods of July 2021 in south west Germany, the country’s need to decrease its dependency on import of gas and energy supply, and the energy transition goals set for 2030 and 2050, it has become clear that the implementation for water reservoirs must increase in the coming years, whether above ground or underground. Furthermore, not only Germany is interested in the use of underground cavities for water and energy storage, other European countries as Sweden are currently developing studies and solutions to bring this concept soon to reality in Europe. This article introduces the systematic approach for planning and designing large underground cavities for water reservoirs as a sustainable energy transition approach and a climate change response by showcasing the process of selection and results of the “Energy and Water Storage Harz” (EWAZ) research project. Additionally, the results of the evaluation of the effect of implementing the selected underground and surface infrastructure into the current water management system in the region is presented. Finally, the different possibilities evaluated for the underground cavities within the project and the technical challenges involved are be discussed.

The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research on a dewatering technique for fine particles generated during the mineral beneficiation process that will recover a portion of the water now being lost using conventional waste disposal methods and significantly reduce the time required for land reclamation. The technique utilizes a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO), that forms strong stable flocs that can be dewatered rapidly on static and/or rotary screens. In field tests, phosphate clay waste has been dewatered from a nominal 2.5 percent solids to greater than 20 percent solids. In other field tests, coal-clay waste has been dewatered from a nominal 3 percent solids to greater than 55 percent solids, in addition, small-scale continuous tests have shown that bentonitic clays can be dewatered from 12 percent solids to 40 percent solids.

INTRODUCTION The occurrence of the radioactive element radium, [2gg~a], often in trace amounts, in the crust of the earth gives rise to a flux of the daughter product radon, ['ii~n], across the earth-air interface. This so-called exhalation process has been studied by many investigators [KO 45, Kra 64, Pe 66, Wi 741] over several decades. In the earlier investigations the exhalation process was studied in a purely geophysical context, but over the last 20 years it has been realized, that under certain conditions the exhalation may be intense enough to also have radiological implications. This is for example the case where relatively radium-rich wastes or by-products, like uranium mill tailings and phospho-gypsum, are stored in larger quantities. In order to be able to predict the radiological impact on the environnent it is necessary to know the rate of exhalation of radon from the surface of the exhaling material. Usually the determination of these exhalation rates has been done by measurements in situ directly upon the accumulated material [~le 74, Ha 791. Although such field measurements have the obvious merit of dealing directly with the full scale problem, the results are often lacking in generality, making predictions for other situations difficult or even impossible. The present paper describes some results of an investigation where it is attempted from laboratory measurements on samples of limited size to obtain material parameters, which are suited for extrapolating and predicting the radiational behaviour of larger accumulations of the material. THEORY Let us consider a sample of a radon exhaling material enclosed in a container with a dead space volume, Vd, and initially containing radon free air. If the total exhalation rate (number of atoms per unit time) is c, the radon concentration (number of atoms per unit volume) N will initially grow with the time t according to the equation [ ] where [R] is the decay constant of radon. As the concentration (or activity) in the container grows, the net exhalation rate will slow down because of back diffusion, and, furthermore, radon atoms may be removed from the container, not only by radioactive decay, but also by diffusion leakage [JO 81 ]. If, however,only the initial. part of the activity growth curve is considered, the total exhalation rate, c, is given by [c = r•Vd(2) where r is the initial activity growth rate in the container. Artisanal and small-scale underground gold mining in Colombia plays a significant role in the country’s economy, but it faces persistent occupational hazards that threaten worker safety. Despite mining economic contributions, outdated technologies, limited risk management practices, and insufficient regulatory enforcement have led to recurring workplace accidents, many of which have been fatal. This study presents a systematic review of mining-related accidents over the last decade. Through geo-referenced analysis, high-risk municipalities were identified, and the frequency of accidents was correlated with the mining legal status and operational practices of these municipalities. The findings underscore the urgent need for evidencebased interventions that are tailored to the country’s unique mining context. Ultimately, this research contributes to the global discourse on mining safety by highlighting practical pathways to reduce occupational risks and promote safer, healthier workplaces in resource-constrained environments.

To address the problem of seepage failure that affects the stability of the fine-grained tailings dam, two kinds of prevention and treatment measures were proposed involving composite flocculants and composite curing agents. The orthogonal test was conducted to determine the optimal ratio flocculant (ORF) and the optimal ratio curing agent (ORCG). Then, numerical models were established to evaluate the effects of the prevention and treatment measures on the seepage and stability of the tailings dam. The results show that the mechanical properties and microstructure of the tailings are significantly improved by adding the ORF and ORCG. Furthermore, numerical studies suggest that the addition of the ORF and the ORCG to the tailings improves the factor of safety of the tailings dam, but the addition of the ORCG also increases the height of the phreatic line. It is also speculated that the addition of the ORF can prevent the formation of through failure zone in the tailings dam. Therefore, the optimal measure to prevent seepage failure in the tailings dam is adding an appropriate amount of the ORF, as it reduces the height of the dam’s phreatic line and lowers the risk of seepage failure. The typical area susceptible to seepage failure can be treated by adding the ORCG. However, it is important to ensure adequate drainage of the area and to maintain the phreatic line at a reasonable buried depth.

As part of a continuing study of diesel exhaust aerosol characteristics, the Bureau of Mines has applied Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) model source apportionment analysis to evaluate a size selective sampling method for determining the separate diesel exhaust and coal dust aerosol concentrations in a diesel equipped coal mine. Size selective sampling was used under the premise that diesel exhaust aerosol dominates the submicrometer aerosol size range, while most of the mineral dust aerosol is greater than 1 m. A micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) was used as the size selective sampling method. Concurrent samples of mine aerosol were collected using a dichotomous, respirable aerosol sampler. This sampler separated the fine and coarse size portions of its sample at 0.7 m. Trace element concentrations for in-mine aerosol sources and the dichotomous samples used by the CMB model were measured using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis. The CMB analysis, applied to both the fine and coarse fractions of the respirable mine aerosol, yielded the mass concentration contributed to each by diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol sources. The MOUDI size distribution data were analyzed using nonlinear regression to parameterize the fine and coarse fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each fraction from both coal dust and diesel aero- sol sources. For the diesel mine visited, analysis of the MOUDI samples yielded a value for the fraction of the fine aerosol attributable to coal dust of 15[]7% fine fraction coal from analysis of the MOUDI samples versus 25[]4% from the CMB analysis. The remainder of the fine aerosol in the mine was diesel exhaust aerosol. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for such sampling. After correcting for the presence of coal dust in the fine aerosol fraction, analysis of the MOUDI size distributions yielded estimates of respirable mineral and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations that were accurate to with-in 10% of values determined by the CMB apportionment.
