There are hundreds of passive treatment systems accepting mining influenced water (MIW) throughout the world. Some systems do not perform to design expectations while others, including volunteer systems, have successfully operated relatively unattended for decades. The primary reasons for this situation include the common misconceptions that (1) a “cookbook” approach to design is valid for a wide array of MIW chemistries and site conditions, and (2) low maintenance means “no maintenance.” Passive treatment systems for MIW are typically manmade ecosystems that are designed to handle a specific range of metal loading conditions and MIW geochemistry. Thus, when design conditions are exceeded, the suite of microbial to macroscopic ecosystems may be slow to recover or mature. This should be no surprise to designers. But when a particular system fails, it may be inappropriately attributed to the technology, not the design. This paper presents a standard “phased” design protocol that appears to work and provides examples of sub-par performance of selected passive treatment systems.

Despite the abundance of solid mineral deposits, Nigeria only earns about 0.5-1% of its current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the solid minerals sector. This is as a result of the dominance of the oil and gas industry, which has negatively affected the competitiveness of other sectors of Nigeria’s economy. The dominance of this industry has resulted in unemployment, poverty, hunger, domestic price inflation, corruption, unstable government, and higher exchange rates. These impacts are typical for economies suffering from the effects of "Dutch Disease" and the "Resource Curse". Community-based small-scale mining offers hope as an economic activity that can create wealth, employment, reduce hunger and poverty, and provide basic amenities for rural communities with solid minerals endowment. This study presents preliminary results of ongoing research into the prospects of using community-based small-scale mining in a developing country like Nigeria to move towards rural sustainable development.

Crucial information about safety, design and operation from ground movement data can be utilized in underground mines. Communicating the information and exploring new findings can be a challenge, however, in a decade where there is an ever-increasing volume and velocity of data due to advancements in mining technologies. This challenge escalates for geotechnical data as they are multidimensional, depending on the space and the rate at which they take place. To tackle this challenge, geotechnical engineers should focus on using simple yet compelling visualization of rock mass data in 3D. Competent visualizations of ground conditions as a trigger action and response plan (TARP) could ease the communication of safety concerns and the exploration of rock mass displacement and strain surrounding an opening at an underground mine. Therefore, this study focuses on using scientific visualization methods by rendering geotechnical data over the surface of a 3D mesh model to display TARP levels. The study was conducted at the East Decline of the San Xavier (SX) Underground Mine, a laboratory mine operated by the University of Arizona. The project aims to produce visualizations that optimize the use of geotechnical data in near-real time.

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. Constructing tunnels in congested urban areas requires tunnels to be placed closer together and with less cover than was previously necessary. Contract CQ031 of New York?s East Side Access project will construct four six-meter diameter bored tunnels in a three-up one-down ?T? configuration, with less than three meters of soil between the tunnels. Mixed-face rock and glacial till conditions with a high ground water table will be encountered under active railroad yards. The tunnels will also pass beneath the busiest railroad interlocking in North America with cover as shallow as three meters. This paper discusses the challenges of designing segmentally lined tunnels for these conditions.

"Highwall miners have been widely used to extract additional coal reserves from existing surface operations, particularly on contour operations in the Appalachian coalfields. Using a continuous miner cutting head, coal may be extracted from significant depths (such as 150 m), leaving behind an array of web and barrier pillars with the purpose of maintaining highwall stability. This method inherently involves elevated risks to both equipment and personnel due to proximity to and increased exposure time near highwalls. As a result, modern operations should actively design web and barrier pillars to maximize extraction while providing adequate stability. The ARMPS-HWM software, an empirical-based program created for the design of web and barrier pillars at highwall mining operations, is one such approach. The calculated stability factor is compared with empirically established guidelines produced from examining case histories.The ARMPS-HWM program is a handy tool for initial design, but understanding the site’s structurally significant geologic features and geomechanical behavior is important and may potentially increase extraction. We created a two-dimensional numerical model using FLAC3D and calibrated it to ensure pillar strength, closely following the Mark- Bieniawski formula for a typical range of pillar geometries and overburden properties. The development of pillar stresses along a highwall panel was then numerically investigated as mining progressed, and the stress distribution between barrier pillars was found to be asymmetric, which can result in an over-design of the closeout web pillars if tributary area loading is assumed. Finally, the importance of adequate barrier pillar stability is highlighted."

Traditionally, mineral sands are evaluated by preparing several mineral products using a combination of heavy liquid-, magnetic-, and electrostatic methods. Whole-rock assays (WRA) are then conducted on ilmenite, rutile and zircon products in order to determine trace element contents, which may affect project feasibility. Combined methods can be time consuming, expensive and even outdated due to the use of banned and toxic chemicals such as clerici solution. Coupled with large field-sample quantities, these procedures can potentially introduce unacceptable sampling and related errors. Modern mineralogical analysis techniques can provide complete mineralogical inventories on a single THM product, reducing the amount of processing involved in satisfactory characterization of early exploration samples. A small exploration sample can be processed to produce a small THM concentrate using readily available gravity/density methods. In turn, the THM product is submitted for Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) and mineralogical inspection by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microscopic evaluation. Modal mineralogy and textural data can be determined using optical methods, automated image analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) based systems. Benefits of automation are reproducibility and the capability of rapidly analysing thousands of particles as opposed to manual optical methods. Automated systems include the use of Automated Digital Image Analysis (ADIS), and SEM-based systems such as the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) and QemSCAN. For detailed mineral chemistry, microanalysis techniques ranging from electron microprobe (EMPA) to Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Laser Ablation Mass-Induced Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) are used. Examples of these automated and analytical methods are presented. ADIS at SGS-Lakefield Research uses optical characteristics to identify and measure mineral species in THM samples; rutile, pseudorutile, ilmenite and leucoxene can be distinguished. Analysis of a single THM product provides bulk modal mineralogy and grain size distribution of particles and the individual mineral grains. Textural information is also obtained detailing mineral associations as well as degree of alteration. Where textural and chemical resolution renders mineral identification ambiguous, SEM-based methods offer better resolution. Examples of this ambiguity are shown in this paper, which leads to QemSCAN as the preferred method where within-grain variability is concerned. Sampling and measurement strategies are followed to meet study objectives, providing a value-added framework for a sequential, cost-effective strategy, which will meet due diligence and bankable accreditation criteria. Studying a THM product by electron microprobe and LAMICP-MS may reveal potential fatal flaws related to mineral chemistry. Low detection limits in the range of 200 to 500ppm are possible using electron microprobe analysis for suitable matrixes (U, Th in zircon). For the detection of ultra low level elemental contaminants, LAM ICPMS is the most accurate method of evaluation. Elements including U, Th, La, Ce, Nb, and V in Ti-minerals can be determined down to 50 ppm.

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

"Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. Over the years, the coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research discussed in this paper investigates one potential solution - or component of a solution - to improve the sustainability of surface coal mining in West Virginia: post-mining wind power. The paper begins with an introduction to the Appalachian region of the U.S. and the role that mining has played in its history, followed by a discussion of the need for sustainable mining and how post-mining wind power may help fulfill it. Data processing methodology of field data from monitoring locations is then explained. The results are then used to estimate the electrical output of a wind turbine. This data is then utilized in a case study discussion of one of the monitored sites. The paper concludes with an analysis of the broader implications of the research and a discussion of future work."

The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) specifies that the upper 1.22 m of material on the reclaimed surface should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate tree root growth. One of the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m of material could cause the reclaimed slopes to be unstable. Successful application of FRA on flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor slope movement. Quarterly surveys of the monuments were done to quantify any type of mass movement either horizontally or vertically. The methodology proposed for slope movement was verified using numerical models. Analytical models based on limit equilibrium technique and numerical models based on the finite element method were developed for slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium analysis was done using Geo-Slope software following the Simplified Bishop Method. The finite element (FEM) numerical model was developed using the Plaxis computer program following the strength reduction technique. Two kinds of slope stability analysis were performed: first with the top 1.22 m of loose material and second without top loose material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes. This paper analyzes the opinion in Bragg v. Robertson, 72 F.Supp. 2d 642 (S.D. W.Va. 1999), a case which threatens the future of surface mining in West Virginia and which will almost certainly result in new policies or rules that will affect surface mining everywhere. This paper addresses: (1) the jurisdictional bases of the action which relies on the federal surface mining laws to enforce a state mining program; (2) settlement agreements reached in the case that threaten to alter federal policies beyond West Virginia borders; (3) a programmatic environmental impact statement on mountaintop mining being undertaken by the federal government; and (4) an opinion by the Court outlawing excess spoil disposal in intermittent and perennial streams.

More than 70 km of main line and service tunnels have been excavated to date for crossing the Apennines between Bologna and Florence. A new design and construction approach, known as Analysis of the Controlled Deformation in Rock and Soils, (ADECO-RS), was adopted to tackle the extreme heterogeneity of the ground and the particular stress-strain conditions. The goal of this system is to obtain constant and predictable full section advance rates, even in very poor geology, with the highest possible level of safety and reliability. The execution of this gigantic project required the mobilization of 21 job-sites, with the concurrent operation of 30 excavation headings. The global production rates confirm the high quality of the design and the high level of industrialization reached during the construction stage, levels not previously obtained in similar conditions, using other approaches such as NATM.

In its April 1991 issue, MINING ENGINEERING published a salary survey form asking for information relating to engineering and management jobs in the minerals industry. 1038 of these forms were filled out and returned, most of them being received in the magazine's offices at SME headquarters before the end of June 1991. An SME volunteer took on the task of tabulating and analyzing data from the forms, but the press of other business interfered with this work, and publication has been delayed until this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Appreciation is extended to SME members who took the time to fill out and return the salary survey forms, and our apologies go to MINING ENGINEERING'S readers for the delay in publication. Of the total number of forms received, more than 97% were from SME members. The geographic distribution of the respondents closely mirrored that of SME membership as a whole, about 50% being from the Society's Western Region, 19% from the Central Region, and 23% from the Eastern Region. About 8% were from outside the US. Average salaries for each of the four geographic areas ranged between $55,000 and $60,000, with the highest average in Eastern Region (Fig. 1). Respondents were asked to answer a number of questions formulated to determine if there are significant differences in salaries based on the type of organization for which they work. As indicated by Table 1, salary averages at mining companies do not vary markedly with the size of the company: • Large companies, defined as those having more than $1 billion in annual sales, accounted for just over 16% of the returns. Their average salary was $61,840 per year.

The most common methods of processing of uranium ores is sulfuric or carbonate leaching with conversion of hexavalent uranium to uranyl carbonate or sulfate anionic complexes followed by sorption of the later by strong base anion (SBA) exchange resins. It is known that chloride anion has high affinity for SBA resins so that it depresses sorption of anionic complexes of uranyl. Application of the SBA resins becomes impractical for recovery of uranium when chloride concentration in pregnant leach solution exceeds 3-5 g/l [1-3].

The Fifth International Heavy Minerals Conference (HMC) was held Oct. 16-19, 2005, at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. With SME as sponsor, the 2005 conference marked the first time that the HMC was held in North America. The conference is held every two years and provides an important forum for professionals in the heavy minerals and related industries to meet and discuss issues related to heavy mineral exploration, mining, processing and marketing. Previous locations included Australia and South Africa. The conference consisted of technical presentations, field trips to heavy mineral operations, a trade show and social activities. It was appropriate that Ponte Vedra was selected as the location for the conference. Ponte Vedra, located on the Atlantic Coast 17 km (10 miles) southeast of Jacksonville, FL, is the birthplace of heavy minerals mining in North America. Ponte Vedra beaches were mined from 1916 to 1929 in what was then called Mineral City. Though Ponte Vedra is now a golf and beach resort, there are still four heavy mineral mines operating within an hour’s drive. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site.

The recovery of natural gas (primarily methane) from coalbed deposits is an established and growing source for the U.S and accounts for over 7% of its total production. The gas from on-purpose degassing is often pipeline quality and requires only compression and dehydration before being admitted to the pipeline grid. However, the raw gas is sometimes contaminated with nitrogen (N2) and/or carbon dioxide (CO2) that can make the gas inadmissible to the transportation pipeline. In general, the N2 must be 4% or less and the CO2 should be 2% or less. In treating gas produced from virgin coal bed or from degassing operations where CO2 is present, amine systems are traditionally used for its removal. Engelhard’s Molecular Gate® adsorption system offers an attractive alternative due to its skid-mounted equipment, low pressure and unattended operation, cost and high on-stream reliability. Natural gas can also be sourced from the residual coal, after the coal has been mined. This source can be the GOB or gas remaining in abandoned coal mines. This source is almost universally contaminated, often with a combination of CO2 and N2. If the source is from air intrusion, the source can also be contaminated with O2. In treating CO2 / N2 contaminated feeds, the Molecular Gate adsorption system removes both of the impurities along with a level of O2 within a single processing step. To date, ten Molecular Gate units are underway with three systems having been installed for upgrading gas from abandoned coal mines. The technology consists of specialty adsorbents and advanced PSA processes that are jointly offered as fabricated packaged equipment by Engelhard Corporation and Guild Associates, Inc. Upgrading requirements, project challenges and project arrangements are discussed in this paper.

Rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals are increasingly becoming more important in our technological society and are used in many of our electronic devices (such as cell phones, computer monitors, wind turbines, etc.), batteries, and magnets. Measuring REE and critical minerals in ashed coal approximates the REE and critical minerals in the fly or bottom ash remaining after coal is burned at a power plant, where REE and other critical minerals could be leached. In New Mexico, there are 26 coal fields in Late Cretaceous rocks in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals) program. Higher concentrations of REE (as much as 2103 ppm total REE) are found locally in ashed coals from the basins. More chemical and mineralogical analyses are required to fully understand the distribution and origin of REE in these deposits. As the demand for REE increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics, perhaps even from coal.

In longwall mining, premining prediction of methane emission rate depends on a number of geological factors, geographical factors, and operational factors. These same factors also can impact the selection of a specific degasification system. This study proposes a principle component analysis (PCA) and artificial neural network (ANN) approach to predict the ventilation methane emission rates of U.S. longwall mines and the optimum combination of degasification boreholes based on the given characteristics of the mine. Artificial neural networks, more than conventional computer models, are adaptable systems that can solve problems such as non-polynomial or very complex relationships that are difficult to describe mathematically. Data on ventilation emissions and degasification system design were obtained from 63 longwall mines in 10 states and were combined with corresponding geological, geographical, and operational parameters for the period 1985-2005. PCA was used to determine the variables that most influence ventilation emissions and degasification system design. Different combinations of variables in the data set and network structures were used for network training, cross-validation, and testing. The resultant ANN models predicted ventilation methane emissions with a 90-95% accuracy and were superior to multi-linear and second order non-linear models. The ANN-based expert classification system was able to classify the design of the degasification system (no degasification, gob vent borehole, horizontal and gob vent borehole, and horizontal, vertical and gob vent borehole) with more than 80% accuracy. The models can be used as prediction and decision tools for the ventilation emissions and degasification system selection for specific site and mine-design conditions.

Uravan, Ambrosia Lake, Gas Hills and South Texas are all historic names in US uranium. These mining areas supplied the uranium that brought the United States into the nuclear age during the 1960s, and fueled the birth of nuclear energy for peaceful uses — a promise of nearly limitless, clean energy for the world’s future. That promise still exists today, but it is hard to hear over the rhetoric of environmental activists and politicians. Nuclear power offers dependable electricity with limited environmental impact at stable prices. Nuclear power releases no greenhouse gases or particulate matter into the atmosphere. High level nuclear waste (HLW), although long lived, is readily controlled and compact. In the United States, generating 1 billion kWh of electricity with coal produces 47 kt (52,000 st) of solid waste (ash and sludge), compared to 3.6 t (4 st) of HLW produced by nuclear.
