Introduction Compania de Carbones de Chile (Cocar SA) has brought into production Chile's first large-scale, open-pit coal mine, located in the Magellan Province. The US $65 million project includes a 1.1-Mt/a (1.2-million stpy) subbituminous steam coal mine and a mechanized bulk loading marine terminal with water depth sufficient to receive 60 kt (66,000 st) Panamax vessels. The loading terminal will be one of the largest in Chile. The Pecket coal project is expected to save Chile about $40 million in energy production costs and a further $100 million in oil imports, or about 25% of the country's oil import costs. Pecket coal will generate electricity for Codelco and will also supply general electricity needs for northern Chile. The Pecket coalfield is located on the Brunswick Peninsula, about 30 km (19 miles) northeast of Punta Arenas, the provincial capital, as shown in Fig. 1. Pecket is part of a large, coal-bearing basin. It extends from Punta Arenas 250 km (155 miles) north to Puerto Natales and across the border into the Rio Turbio coalfield in Argentina. During 1983, The Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company's lost-time-incidence rate was 8.1, equal to the average for underground bituminous operators. How- ever, one half of all lost-time injuries were low back, back and neck related. In reviewing these results, we determined that substantial improvement could be made. We investigated existing back schools and the possibility of opening an in-house clinic. In September 1984, we began The Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company's Back Care Program. The objectives of the program are to reduce the number of back injuries incurred at the work site, hasten recovery time, decrease medical and workers' compensation costs and provide the employee with a thorough understanding of his problem. A state-of-the-art clinic capable of treating injuries to the spine and extremities has been established at the work site. The clinic is staffed by a licensed physical therapist and is offered to all employees on a voluntary basis under physician referral. The approach to treatment is multi-phasic. For the typical patient, the initial goal is to reduce pain and correct dysfunction. Treatment modalities such as auto-traction, extension exercises, ultra sound and moist heat are frequently used. During this period the patient is given extensive education regarding his problem. As soon as more vigorous activity can be tolerated, a work-hardening pro- gram consisting of job simulation activities designed to improve flexibility, strength and functional capability is begun.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in 1998 reviewed its permitting process to determine how effective its program has been in preventing pollution and to identify here it could be improved. Of the 1,699 bituminous mine permits issued from 1987 to 1 996, 50 were identified to have current or past postmining discharges with water quality problems. The remaining 1,649 sites had no known current or past postmining discharges problems. The 50 sites were selected for further review. On closer examination, 33 of these permits no longer had water quality problems or the problem had not actually resulted from the permitted mining activity. Only 17 permits, or one percent of the total permits issued, were found to have caused long-term postmining discharges serious enough to require treatment and prevent bond release. Analysis of these 17 sites using current knowledge of mine drainage prediction, revealed that the most common cause of error was inadequate information in the permit application. Errors in interpretation of the application data and in implementing the permit were less common. A very small percentage of all permits issued resulted in postmining discharges for no clearly identifiable reason. Trends over the 10-year study period indicated a decreasing incidence of permits resulting in postmining discharges. Further, with the exception of the first few years of data, most of the postmining discharges were of mildly acidic or alkaline quality and amenable to passive treatment.

Engineers in the field of coal preparation are continually striving to increase the efficiency of various circuits used in preparation plants. Undoubtedly, one of the important factors concerning the processing efficiency of a coal preparation plant is improved analyses and control of the processing equipment. The necessary link between the performance criteria of a circuit may be provided through on-line determination of various parameters. Currently, there are a certain number of on-line instruments developed for measurement of ash content of coal (Watt and Sowerby, 1983; Kawatra, 1976; Fauth et al., 1984; Lyman and Chester, 1980), moisture content (Hall et al., 1969), and sulfur content (Stewart et al., 1974). In the case of coal separatory units, these parameters are often directly related to the quality of the product. In other words, the extent of misplacement of refuse in the product, or vice versa, would indicate the performance characteristics of any particular coal washing equipment. Partition curves are therefore established to predict the performance of coal cleaning operations. Conventional sampling and testing is currently the major tool with which partition curves are produced and the performance efficiency of the operation is assessed. While conventional analysis techniques are accurate, they are slow and time-consuming.

In the Grasberg Mine, a series of orepasses of diameter 2 to 4m are being constructed, each one to carry as much as 10,000 tlhour of copper- and gold-bearing ore through single stage vertical drops of over 500m. At the base of each orepass, the fragmented rock falls into an orebin of diameter 1 Om and 100m deep. Long before the planned tonnages were reached on the early orepasses, a problem arose that was both serious and intriguing. Pressurization of air in the orebins caused by the falling rock reached such levels that when the feed to the top of an orpass was interrupted, a massive surge of air ascended rapidly and produced a dangerous backblast accompanied by dust; grit and rock fragments from the top of the orepass. Backblasts lasted for about one minute and were not only hazardous to the health and safety of personnel but also required time-consuming clean-up operations. The paper describes the aerodynamic analyses that were con- ducted in order to understand fully the mechanisms involved in the phenomenum, and the development of a procedure that al- lows the effects of falling material to be incorporated into existing ventilation network software.

[show of hands, far fewer, general audience laughter] You have all at least heard the word "gainsharing." Some of you undoubtedly aren't quite sure what gainsharing is, while others obviously have gainsharing plans in place and are looking for ways to improve them. In the short time I have now I'll be able to give you a precursory look at gainsharing and some brief ideas on where to look to improve your current plans. Over the years, I've found that it is often best to explain gainsharing by comparing it to other forms of employee compensation

Previous research on continuous mining operations has shown that significant interactions exist between dust-control parameter application and the resulting respirable dust levels. However, simply increasing the level of the controls does not guarantee a reduction in respirable dust levels. Full-scale laboratory tests are being conducted to provide information to longwall operators that would assist them in selecting control parameters to reduce dust levels for mine-specific conditions. The interactions between face air velocity, shearer water quantity, drum water spray pressure, external water spray pressure and spray system design were evaluated in a simulated 2.13-m (7 ft) coal seam for two cutting directions. Locations around and downwind of the shearer were monitored to evaluate relative changes in respirable dust levels as a function of each control parameter.

Plane failure in rock and soil slopes is usually caused by the intersection of a discontinuity plane with a slope face. Normally, these discontinuities are weaker than the surrounding intact rock and provide a surface along which movement can occur. The discontinuities are typically analyzed to determine the stability of a particular slope. One problem that arises when evaluating the stability of a planar feature is that the method for planar analysis is two-dimensional and has difficulty dealing with planes that are oblique to the slope face. Several researchers have stated in the past that planar failures are a special case of wedge failure. Wedge failures occur when two planar discontinuities intersect in an unfavorable manner. Sliding can occur along the intersection of the planes. Wedge failures are very common in rock slopes and can often be problematic. Wedge stability analysis methods are typically three-dimensional and can analyze planar features that are very oblique to the slope face. Wedge failure analysis can also be used to determine the stability of planar features with good success. One advantage to using wedge analysis over plane analysis is that a tension crack can be both non-vertical and oblique to the slope face in the wedge analysis. This allows the engineer to more closely match field conditions. It also negates the need for the engineer to have two separate software packages to analyze a single slope, saving both time and money.

It is well known that processing of the high-silicon bauxites for obtaining alumina by the hydrochemical Bayer process is irrational due to the significant losses of alumina and alkali with red mud. The main source of losses of the mentioned compounds under the conditions of leaching by the Bayer process is the formation of difficultly soluble sodium alumosilicate of the composition Na20 .Al203, 2Si02 . n H20. A conventional method of an extra recovery of alumina as well as of regeneration of alkali out of red mud is the high-temperature sintering of the latter with soda and limestone with the subsequent leaching of sodium aluminate from the sinter by water or soda solution. A sequential version of the Bayer-sintering flow chart recommended for the prosessing of bauxites with an increased content of silica is based on this method. However, the sintering method is not the only alkaline method allowing to make an extra recovery of alumina likewise of alkali from red mud. Our investigations showed/I/, that the components mentioned can be recovered by a pure hydrochemical method of treating red mud with concentrated alkaline solutions, with lime (Ca0) being present, that was earlier succesfully used in the development of the hydrochemical method of processing nepheline rocks/2/. The possibility of extracting alumina and alkali from red mud is based on the reactions which can be schematically represented in the following way:

The purpose of this work is to develop a conceptual recovery process for thorium dioxide (ThO2) from its primary source, monazite. The study-level design presented in this paper represents an economically viable method for conducting ThO2 extraction from monazite ore while also recovering byproducts that include P2O5 and other rare earth element oxides rather than producing unnecessary waste streams. Three key points to note in the development of this process design are: (1) the process economics relied heavily on recovery of rare earth byproducts, (2) the thorium handling portions of the process could effectively be segregated from the rare earth and phosphate handling portions of the process, and (3) the thorium and uranium content in waste streams should be carefully managed and eliminated where possible.

High-pressure roll mill comminution of heterogeneous multicomponent feeds was simulated with artificial limestone-quartzite mixtures using a piston-die press. The influence of heterogeneous interactions between components of the mixture on grinding path, energy utilization and energy split have been examined. Primary fractures are governed by differential fracture strength and attrition resistance of the components at heterogeneous contacts; subsequent secondary and tertiary fracture events are governed by coarse-fine interactions in the particle-bed. The weaker component is preferentially ground out of the feed size fraction and concentrates in the fines. Energy split among the components in the mixture is a function of their relative fracture strengths. It doubles for limestone and decreases by a factor of 5 for quartzite over the entire range of the mixing ratio.

The 1972 discovery of the Howards Pass lead-zinc deposit was the product of systematic regional geochemical surveys used to evaluate conceptual geological models for the metal-rich black shales of the Selwyn Basin. Motivation of personnel involved in all aspects of work was as critical a factor to the success as the existing corporate attitudes and infrastructure. Exploration programs were flexible but maintained a focus only on targets of sufficient economic potential to support operations in remote locations. Direct costs for the programs that lead to the discovery were in the order of $500,000 (Canadian 1972). Geological reserves today stand at over 500 Mt (511 million st) of 7% combined lead-zinc, containing a higher grade zone of nearly 10 Mt (11 million st) of 16% combined lead-zinc.

The dimensions and shape of both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos. These properties include the fibrillar structure, small fibrill widths and distinctive crystallographic faces of fibrills. Criteria for distinguishing amphibole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical proper-ties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters.

The Sumich (Victorine) gold mine is located in the Toiyabe Mountain Range on the east side of Victorine Canyon, a north-trending branch off Kingston Canyon in the northwest quarter of Section 27 and southwest quarter of Section 22, T16N, R43E, in the southern end of Lander County, Nevada (Fig. 1). HISTORY Discovered in 1862, the Victorine reached a peak of development between 1872 and 1887. The "Victorine" and "Morning Star" lode mining claims, located on the outcrop of a prominent auriferous quartz vein, were patented in 1869 and 1891, respectively. 1, respectively. Gold ore was mined underground in adits driven, on the level, directly into the side of the mountain. Ore brought to the surface was trammed about 457 m (1500 ft) south on a track constructed along the contour to ore bins. From this transfer point, the ore was moved by aerial tram to the bottom of the canyon then hauled by horse-drawn wagon to the mill located about 3.2 km (2 miles) east down Kingston Canyon. Exact details of the milling process used on the Victorine are lacking, but old reports mention water-driven stamp mills, amalgamation, chlorination, and cyanidation. Gold and silver mill products are reported to have been sent to England for final refining. High-grade gold values of 103 g/t (3 oz per ton) remaining in mine walls and on outcrops, attest to the lack of success in treating the Victorine ore in the early mills. The Victorine mine may have been worked sporadically after 1887 with little success. In 1934, control of the property was acquired by William P. Moloney, an attorney from Marion, OH, who also control- 1 led an interest in the successful Goldacres mine in Lander County, NV. This property was studied, sampled, and metallurgical tests were done in 1934, but no development resulted from this work.

The tectonic and sedimentary environment of the Central North American Rift System (CNARS) provides all excellent setting for major mineral deposits. Major north-northeast-trending high-angle normal or reverse faults and northwest-trending transcurrent fault systems may exercise control over ore forming processes. Gabbro and basalt are the dominant igneous rock types. Carbonatite and kimberlite occur in Nebraska and Kansas. Concentrations of Cu. Ni, Co, Ti, Au. Ag and PG-minerals are known to occur in this setting. Arkosic sandstone, siltstone, shale, and minor carbonate units occur on top of the rift basalts and in flunking basins where they may reach thicknesses of 10 km (6 miles). The potential, for stratiform or unconformity-related metalliferous deposits must be considered. The rift as a whole remains, however, largely unexplored.

The dispersion model of nonideal flow was applied to describe the hydrodynamic state within the flotation column. Residence time distribution (RTD) data of a laboratory flotation column were measured to determine the parameters of the model. The effects of operating variables and column geometry on the Peclet number which reflects the extent of axial dispersion were investigated and a semi-empirical expression of Pe was formulated. The dispersion model was validated for the column flotation of ultrafines coal. Under the conditions of sufficient aeration rate and frother addition, a good agreement between the measured recoveries and predicted data was obtained. The dispersion model with first-order flotation rate process of the flotation column developed in this study is useful in predicting the collection zone recovery of fine coal, and for the flotation column scale-up.

Surveying of mines is a necessary step in coal mining to assemble maps which are used for tracking progress in the development of the mine and to plan future coal removal. A first approach for automatically building high-resolution two-dimensioml maps of underground coal mines is presented. The technique assembles laser rangefinder scans obtained from several locations within the mine into a consistent global map of the mine. Each range scan comprises thousands of data points collected in one second, thereby achieving higher resolution and much faster measurement compared to a human using a transit. The raw data (range scans) are processed to fuse them into a consistent representation. This paper describes a first approach to automated surveying and presents initial results of merging range scans. Improvements to the scan-merging algorithm are proposed.

INTRODUCTION Prior to 1705, underground mining was limited to mineral deposits located above or a very small distance below the water table. The development of the steamdriven mining pump was motivated by the need to extract minerals from deposits considerably lower than the water table. Today, the majority of mine pumps are driven by electric motors, although some small utility pumps are driven by compressed air. Of the numerous types of pumps that might be applied to mine service, the two types used most frequently underground are the centrifugal and plunger pumps. Each of these types has its proper application. In most instances, plunger pumps are best for handling low water volumes against high heads, while centrifugal pumps effectively handle either low or high water volumes against low heads or high water volumes against high heads. This chapter describes pumps applied to underground mine service, where the mine service consists of mine drainage (removing mine water as it accumulates), mine dewatering (removing water from a flooded mine), and pumping for special applications such as hydraulic mining and hydraulic hoisting. CENTRIFUGAL AND PLUNGER PUMPS Modern mine pumps are classified as either centrifugal (kinetic) or plunger (positive-displacement) pumps. The following paragraphs describe each of these classifications. Centrifugal Pumps Centrifugal pumps may be grouped into various types, depending upon their various features: Number of Stages: In a single-stage pump, the total head is developed by one impeller, while a multi¬stage pump utilizes two or more impellers acting in one casing to develop the total head. Fig. I shows a cutaway view of a single-stage horizontal split-case double -section centrifugal pump. Fig. 2 shows a cutaway view of a six-stage medium-pressure split-case diffuser-type centrifugal pump. Type of Casing: A volute pump has a casing in the form of a spiral or volute. A circular-casing pump has a casing of constant cross section concentric with the impeller. A diffuser pump is equipped with a diffuser that converts velocity head to pressure head. Shaft Position: A horizontal pump normally has the shaft in a horizontal position, while a vertical pump normally has the shaft in a vertical position. Fig. 3 illustrates a vertical turbine-type slurry pump. Suction: A single-suction pump equips the first stage with a single-suction impeller, with fluid entering the impeller on only one side. "One critical factor in mineral reserves reporting, as well as mine-reserves reconciliation, is the impact of dilution and ore loss in the mining process. This paper considers the implications of various factors on dilution and ore loss projections, by orebody geometry, mining method, and ore control systems. We also discuss the implications of resource estimation methodology on dilution for reserves. DEFINITIONS Dilution and ore loss are two critical concepts in mining, which address the differences encountered between modeled grade and tonnages and actual production. Dilution is volume increase and grade reduction caused by multiple factors, chief among which are mining of waste material along ore-waste contacts, mining of internal waste as ore, and misclassification of waste as ore in the ore control process. There are also geostatistical and estimation aspects sometimes lumped with dilution, including the volume-variance effect (the tendency for small volumes of material to include a less regular distribution of grade than large volumes of material). Ore loss is described as reductions of ore volumes in the mining process due to misclassification of ore as waste in the ore control process, exclusion of discontinuous mineralization from mining due to geometry or continuity, and mechanical losses in the mining process. Dilution is typically taken as an increase in tonnes of ore with no change in contained metal (and thus results in a reduction in grade.) (Some workers consider the likely grade of the diluting material as well, particularly in deposits with gradational grade boundaries—this will be addressed later in the text.) Ore loss is typically taken as a reduction in tonnes at average grade of the ore, and thus results in a reduction in both tonnes and contained metal.
