The objective of this investigation was to determine the sensitivity of three selected input parameters in the operational control of continuous bottom fed thickeners used for the treatment of coal refuse slurries. The three variable parameters were "Feed Flow Rate," "Feed pH," and "Feed Solids Concentration." These three input parameters were studied under three cationic-anionic polymeric conditions. For each polymeric condition, two mathematical models were developed, one for overflow response and the other for underflow response. The combination polymers produced the best quality of overflow and underflow. For this polymeric condition, change in the feed solids concentration was the most sensitive factor in the maintenance of the overflow quality, and the feed pH was the most sensitive factor for the maintenance of underflow quality. The mathematical models generated a set of plots that would allow an operator to control and/or adjust any of the three variables to achieve optimum conditions.

It's 12:30 A.M. The day before had been a long one with problems ranging from proper application of shotcrete during cold weather and the follow-on precautions for curing, meetings with city officials to avert a job shutdown because traffic wasn't being maintained properly and finally a briefing before METRO's General Manager to bring him up to date on projections for meeting the operational date of June 1975. The phone rings and Officer Jones of the Park Police says "Mr. Lynch, this lady in the apartments overlooking the jobsite is complaining of noise and she wants the job shutdown". "Officer Jones, have you called the Project Manager or the Resident Engineer?" "Yes, sir, but there is no answer!" "O.K., Officer, I'll check it out." In calling the job, I can only get the guard, because the inspector is in the tunnel. After some time, the guard calls back and says he doesn't know the way down into the tunnel. I have since had a difficult time believing that one. In the interim I finally reached the Resident Engineer and explained the situation. And finally at 1:30 A.M. the inspector called the Resident to say that the Park Police stopped the job at 1:00 A.M. because we didn't respond promptly. A similar situation had occurred some 2 years previously. With great expectation, noise specifications were developed to correct the earlier situation that had occurred. These newly developed specifications were in force at the time of this most recent shutdown. Common sense would tell you that even though we had developed and implemented, we believe, some of the best and most practical noise specifications in construction practice today, we had not enforced them. The phosphoric acid industry is expected to develop in Saudi Arabia in the near future. There are three main reasons for expecting this: the discovery of phosphate deposits in the Sirhan-Turayf region, the construction of phosphate fertilizer facilities of the TSP, DAP and NPK plants on the east coast of the country, and the availability of an ample amount of sulfur As a by-product from the petrochemical industries. This study is a part of the research work performed in the chemical engineering department At King Saud University to evaluate the Saudi phosphate rocks for the wet process phosphoric Acid production and to test different flotation methods for the carbonate rich phosphate rock In a laboratory scale flotation cell. Experimental results for the above tests, as well as Beneficiation by calcination, are presented.

Knowing the location of voids/fractures in roof rock will be greatly helpful for roof support design. The drilling parameters obtained during normal roof bolt installation cycle provide a fast and economic way for determining void location in roof rock. In this research, feed pressure and rotation torque are found to be good indicators for identifying the voids, based on the results of a series of laboratory experiments. A set of computational rules has been developed to locate voids in mine roof using the measured roof drilling parameters and implemented in MRGIS, a software package developed to allow mine engineers to make use of the large amount of roof drilling parameters for predicting roof geology properties automatically. Anew feature, 2D map+3D figure display, is also added to MRGIS.

The Mountain Con mine is a relatively old, deep mine located in Butte, Montana. Operations at this property through the present shaft were started before the turn of the century. As mining progressed to depth, increasing demand for ventilation facilities and changing mining conditions made it convenient to convert some nearby shafts to airways. The fact that these openings had not been originally planned for use as airways made it necessary in some instances to utilize long and inefficient already-estab¬lished entries to service working areas. This situation existed in the Lexington fresh air system. The Lexington system consists of a vertical, 3-compartment shaft extending from surface to the 3200 level and a series of 2-compartment air raises and old horizontal-haulage openings extending into a mining area several thousand feet west of the Lexington shaft between the 3900 level and the 4200 level. Because of restrictions and high resistance in the portion of the system between the bottom of the Lexington shaft on the 3200 and the mining area on the 3900, the capacity of this system is only 85,000 cubic feet of air per minute. It was calculated that the capacity of the system could be in¬creased to meet the demands of the current mining program in this section of the mine by utilizing a single, straight, horizontal air course on the 3200 and by driving an inclined air raise 740 feet long between the 3900 and the 3200.

The minerals sector plays a significant role in the development of many Southern African economies. In the Southern Africa region, as in other developing regions, economic development is seen as the key contributor to poverty alleviation and social upliftment. The significant economic contribution of the minerals sector may be reduced by negative impacts on the biophysical environment and on the communities where mines operate. A critical variable in determining the net contribution of mining companies to SD is the degree of transparency with which the companies operate. Transparency is increasingly emphasised as an essential aspect of good governance and SD, but it is also difficult to establish, and is a sensitive issue for mining companies as they compete with each other for minerals sales. Transparent reporting could ensure that the interests of all stakeholders are addressed as company data is subject to informal ‘auditing’ by any interested party. This paper assesses published reports of five companies over a number of years to establish whether it is possible to make an assessment of the companies’ contribution to SD.

The Thalanga Copper-Lead-Zinc Concentrator in Northern Queensland was commissioned in early 1990. The design of a flotation process for the sequential production of separate copper, lead, and zinc concentrates has always been a most formidable mineral processing challenge. In 1988-1989 during the process design phase, sized fractions of various samples were subjected to quantitative and qualitative mineral analyses. These analytical techniques are collectively known as modal analysis. Modal analysis aided in the selection of key process treatment parameters for the initial laboratory testwork on the Thalanga ore. The work also guided the flowsheet development and quantified the mineralogically imposed limitations on the separation process. This paper describes in general terms how these modal techniques were used to guide the program of laboratory flotation testwork which constituted the flowsheet design phase of this project. During these design studies, the primary grind and regrind requirements were deduced and the basic flowsheet configuration selected. Recent operating plant performance data are to illustrate the value of modal methods in addressing complex metallurgical separation problems.

This chapter is concerned with the construction of the dynamic component of belt haulage systems. The dynamic system includes the belt line and tailpiece extension and retraction movements in a production system where mine management is continually placing the belt in the most effective operating position. Correct installation of the belt and tailpiece during an extension is very important for many performance reasons. Two of the most important reasons are to eliminate spillage and safely operate the belt line. This chapter is divided into three major discussions. The first discussion looks at analyzing the parameters of effective belt line construction. This includes a review of the parameters and management tools needed for proper scheduling of a move-up. The second major discussion topic centers on efficient procedures for a belt line extension. Topics such as site preparation, tailpiece breakdown and setup, stringing the belt line and structure, plus operating and maintenance tasks needed after the belt line is installed and running, are covered. The third discussion presents a list of conveyor and conveyor component manufacturers who provide services and products to the coal mining industry. Again, any discussion on underground haulage systems must generalize much of the site specific design approaches to be practical. This text will mention, where applicable, some of the alternatives available to construction engineers in designing belt line systems.

The Revenue Act of 1926 provided for five simple categories of natural resources to have the benefit of depletion allowances. In the 1947 Revenue Act, the number was increased to twenty-five, and in the 1951 Revenue Act to fifty-four. Of this number, fourteen were allowed 5 per cent; nine, 10 per cent; twenty-nine, 15 per cent; one, 23 per cent; and one (oil and gas), 27.5 per cent. The 1951 Revenue Act created a host of difficulties, including application of the "end- use criterion" and determination of the commonly accepted meaning of such terms as limestone, dolomite, chemical- and metallurgical-grade limestone, marble, calcium carbonates, and magnesium carbonates. Dolomite, for example, was listed at 10 per cent depletion allowance, but without definition. In the great amount of litigation growing out of the 1951 Revenue Act and its administration, it became essential to understand the derivation and subsequent usage of these common geologic terms. One thing that became clear was that our definitions changed significantly between the time that the 1951 Revenue Act became law and the time that later cases were tried. Some geologists neglected to learn about first usages of such terms as metallurgical limestone, and about meanings that were applicable when the 1951 Revenue Act was written and passed. Legal meanings in this paper are discussed in the light of certain famous cases that have been tried and settled.

This paper describes part of a geotechnical study based on stress determinations and convergence measurements conducted to assess the long-term stability of an experimental room-and-pillar oil shale mine. A rock mechanics program was initiated in 1971 at the Colony Mine as part of a large study conducted for the design of a commercial operation. The Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; Ashland Oil Inc., Atlantic Richfield Company (Operator of the project), Shell Oil Company, and The Oil Shale Corporation. Although oil shale commercialization plans are presently suspended, rock mechanics instrumentation has been continued as part of Colony's policy in maintaining readiness to proceed with a commercial shale oil plant when national energy policies became better defined. The property is located in the southern edge of the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, approximately 200 miles west of Denver. Experimental mining operations were conducted from 1965 to 1972 with one of the major objectives of the pilot mine being the assessment of opening and pillar sizes for the determination of extraction ratio and life of the property. Mining was conducted in a 60 foot thick portion of the Mahogany Zone in the Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation, at depths of 600 to 850 feet by a one-bench system. Pillar dimensions were 58 feet by 58 feet and rooms were 55 feet wide.

BHP Iron Ore initiated a program in January, 1995 at their Mt. Whaleback operation in Newman, Western Australia to develop a decommissioning plan for the waste rock material. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion, and water infiltration. This paper evaluates field performance of cover systems constructed on a horizontal and a sloped waste rock surface. The cover system is constructed using suitable run-of-mine waste material to minimize closure costs. The moisture is subsequently released to the atmosphere as evapotranspiration. Rainfall entering the waste material is buffered due to the presence of the cover material thereby significantly reducing net percolation to the underlying waste rock. The objective is to control acid rock drainage by preventing moisture movement into and through the waste rock material. Two years of field data are presented to illustrate low percolation rates to the underlying waste rock and key performance characteristics of the moisture store and release cover system design. Field data collected to date demonstrates that a moisture store and release cover system constructed with suitable run-of-mine waste material has good potential as a final acid rock drainage control cover system at the Mt. Whaleback site. The performance of the cover system on a sloped surface was significantly altered as compared to placing the cover system on a horizontal surface.

On reflection of certain overall circumstances which have pervaded the gold mining industry, it appears useful to point out some specifics which the writer hopes will improve the potential for success in the application of hydraulic dredges to gold mining activity. I will, prior to entering into that discussion, comment briefly on rule of thumb for the application of the three types of equipment. The three are bucket line, bucket wheel and drag line dredges. From a standpoint of high volume movement over a short distance, between 50 and 300 feet, the drag line dredge is historically the most cost effective type of machine to be utilized if bulk excavation is the single driving consideration. It is typical for this sort of equipment to operate in the 10 to 30 cents per cubic yard range, however, cost of operation is not the sole consideration. Typically the drag line mixes and remixes the material which it excavates. In the event that gold recovery is the object of the exercise, a strong potential for loss of the valued mineral exists. Additionally, drag lines do a poor job of bottom cleaning, particularly if there is a ridged or creviced bottom which must be cleaned and in some cases partially removed to assure recovery of the highest percent of valuable ore. The bucket line dredge has, until recently, been considered an extremely cost effective device. An important problem in mine operations is the classification of material as waste, low-grade stockpile and ore. This classification must often be made with blasthole data that are widely spaced and that have sampling errors. Geostatistical-simulation techniques combined with basic economic principles allow a procedure for classification that maximizes the expected profit. Geostatistical-simulation methods (Gaussian, indicator or annealing-based) allow the integration of hard and soft data in the creation of alternative, equally probable realizations of the mineral grades. At each location, for each realization one calculates the "profit" if the block were to be classified as ore or waste. The optimal classification is the one that maximizes expected profit (a maximum profit selec¬tion or MPS procedure). In this paper, the authors discuss the theoretical justification of the method and implementation details. The use of blasthole data from different types of mineral deposits, that is, different levels of continuity, are considered. The authors also show the efficacy of the procedure with different levels of sampling error. The increased revenue due to the MPS procedure and improved sampling is shown. The paper shows the geostatistical-simulation procedure and the uncertainty in block grades that result from incomplete and imperfect sampling. The optimal classification is presented. Optimal block classifications are transferred to realizable dig limits by hand-drawing polygonal boundaries. The results of the proposed method are compared to classification based on kriging. Limitations and areas of future work are identified.

The polyolefins, mainly polyethylene and polypropylene particles, are used as an active filler material in polymer-polymer blends and are being used for the modification of asphalts to pro- vide for high-load, low-maintenance road construction. The stability of prepared blends depends on the interaction forces between polyolefinfiller and the matrix and/or between two polyolefin filler surfaces in the polymeric matrix. Various additives, especially surfactants, can be used to modify these interactions and improve the stability of polymer blends. In current research, direct force measurements between polyethylene (PE) surfaces in n-tetradecane, a nonaqueous solvent imitating the polymer matrix, were performed in the presence of lauric acid and dodecylamine using the AFM colloidal probe technique. Additionally, the zeta potential of polyethylene particles in the presence of surfactants in n-tetradecane was measured. The interac- tion forces between the polyethylene surfaces can be described as a combination of electrical double layer repulsion and steric repulsion between polymer chains extending into the n-tetradecane sol- vent. The addition of surfactant to the n-tetradecane was found to increase the repulsive force between the PE surfaces. The strongest repulsion was observed for dodecylamine. Additionally, the temperature efect on the interactions in n-tetradecane was studied. It was found that steric repulsion between the PE surfaces increases with an increase in temperature.

A suite of ore and waste rock materials was selected for the interlaboratory testing of combustion-infrared ("Leco") methods used to estimate carbonate and sulfide minerals present in test materials. The objective of the study is to develop ASTM standard methods to be used for metallurgical characterization of ore, acid drainage prediction for ore and waste during ore body evaluation, and for ore and waste control during the active mining of ore deposits. The results may be interpreted for classification of the materials according to their carbonate-sulfide or acid-base characteristics based on net carbonate value (NCV). The test materials were processed by x-ray diffraction and x-ray fluorescence (XRD-XRF) at Newmont Metallurgical Services (NMS) to obtain a semiquantitative mineralogical composition. Results of the interlaboratory testing for total carbon-sulfur, pyrolysis loss carbon-sulfur and hydrochloric acid residual carbon¬sulfur are compared with the mineralogical composition to aid in interpretation of the NCV classifications of the samples.

The primary purpose of this paper is to review the fire and explosion hazards associated with hydrocarbons heavier than methane. Methane is the classical hydrocarbon encountered in mines whose presence is generally due to bacterial decomposition of organic debris. The higher hydrocarbons are more likely to be found during tunneling when petroleum products either natural or man made are encountered. Fires may be defined as rapid gas phase oxidations accompanied by the rapid evolution of light and heat. Explosions may be defined as uncontrolled fires. The rapidly expanding gases resulting from combustion exceed the speed of sound and generate percussive forces. The essential elements for a fire or explosion are shown on Figure 12: (1) a gas phase explosive mixture and (2) an ignition source. The paper will attempt to review various aspects relative to the explosive mixture; The concentration and composition; Techniques for detection; Techniques for ventilation to reduce concentration below explosive limits. The ignition sources are also listed on Figure 12. An arc originates from an electrical source such as electrical switches, relays and motor brushes. Dissolved Arsenic (As) is stabilised primarily as As(III) and As(V) and enters ground water streams from sources such as the increasing metallurgical processing of As - containing ores [1]. As(III) is more toxic than As(V) and is less effectively removed from solution by oxide precipitation. Even for dilute As(III) solutions, skin contact or ingestion can cause dermatitis or cancer and there are stringent effluent control standards in place for As containing effluent from mining operations [2]. Chemtronics (Perth, Australia) has manufactured a compact digital voltamme­ter, based on anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) and suitable for use in the laboratory or field. In this paper we demonstrate the utility of this equipment for measuring As(III) concentration with a detection limit of ca. 10 ppb.
