In Canada, most of the rock being broken in underground metal mines is being done by using traditional drilling and blasting methods. Despite advances being made in hardrock boring and other, more exotic techniques, Dynatec believes that the traditional methods will prevail for many years. It is also believed that modest research efforts expended on the traditional methods will result in substantial financial benefits to the mining and rock tunneling businesses. Dynatec has pursued productivity improvements through the use of long rounds in shaft sinking and lateral development. The concept of longer rounds was developed by Dynatec on the Craig Shaft Sinking Project (RETC, 1991). This technology was subsequently used to sink the two shafts at Aur Resources with great success. The development of a Long Round Jumbo for tunneling is a natural progression of the long round technology developed for the Craig Shaft. The Dynatec Long Round System has been patented in the United States and South Africa, with additional patent applications pending in Canada and Australia.

Experiments were carried out on 76 mm laboratory heavy medium cyclone treating -2.0 t 0.5 mm coal and on two 600 mm industrial heavy medium cyclones treating coal in the size range -13.0 t 0.5 mm. The variables studied were spigot diameter and feed medium gravity. The generalised distribution curve for the separation of coal in these heavy medium cyclones has been defined by the equation [ ] The specific gravity of separation SG has been found to increase linearly with increase in feed medium, gravity (SGf). The relationship for SG of industrial cyclone is given as 50 SG = -6.801 t 6.463 SGf t 0.0327 Spig 50 -0.02625 SGf. Spig. Further, the probable error for the separation has been found to be linearly related to (SG50 - SGf ) according to the equation [ ] The model equations developed have been used to select appropriate levels of operating conditions to achieve an increase in the yield by about 2 to 4% without affecting the quality of the product.

In the paper some interesting cases of applications of Operations Research and Computer Methods as worked out by the author and accepted by the management of some of the newly formed Indian mining organisation for implementation are highlighted. The main emphasis on the application cases was to use simple techniques and methods which yield the result in shorter time period, The case problems mainly deals with the production system optimisation in unit mines, areas/divisions and at the corporate levels. Also the management decisions regarding reorganisation of transport and distribution system of material and mineral are attempted to be optimised. Further, the case of management system development with computer aided decision making worked out for single large Iron Ore Project captive to a steel plant is outlined. Finally, the case of a large mining company having decentralised units and divisions geographically dispersed throughout the country, computerised management decision-information system designed on the basis of inputs and outputs of decision models relevant for different levels of management in the organisation is depicted.

The objective of this chapter is to discuss the interrelationship between industrial minerals and chemical manufacturing. It is intended to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Particular emphasis is given to the pertinent chemical element and to market factors. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages of this handbook permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. Hydrocarbons, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potassium, and nitrogen for fertilizers, and titanium dioxide for pigments. The remaining six elements of major importance are: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. [Table 1] affords an overview of the main industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry. Table 2 is a chart of the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake-type brines, which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland-type brines, from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake-type brines, yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak- type brines, produced mainly for lithium. MARKET ATTRIBUTES Some of the important market traits common to industrial minerals used by the chemical industry are: 1. They are international commodities, such as fluorspar and sulfur, which largely move to foreign consumers. 2. Grade, and freedom from deleterious elements are important factors affecting their usability in chemical processes. An example is salt (NaCl) used in electrolysis where ultrapure evaporated salt is required to meet rigid specifications. 3. Purified products take on the characteristics of specialty items and command a distinctly higher price than the basic commodity from which they are derived. 4. In practically all cases, chemical users require some sort of cleaning or beneficiation of the naturally-occurring mineral to bring it to specification, and individual specifications may vary from user to user for essentially the same use. 5. In some instances it is necessary to strike a balance between what the vendor can supply and what the buyer requires, with the result that specifications have to be eased to afford the needed materials in marginal cases. 6. Because they tend to be bulk commodities, low cost for handling and transportation are important and such costs may limit the area from which a chemical user can draw his supply. 7. Shipments are usually in bulk and frequently in multiple-car, full-trainload or full-shipload lots to reduce transport costs, which in turn may require large terminal investment facilities. 8. Purchases are generally by contract of one year or longer term, with spot buying playing only a minor role. 9. Contract prices are usually fixed in short term commitments, but may vary according to assay, with premiums and penalties for content above or below the norm; however, general practice is for specifications to be fixed in the contract with minimums being set for the desired material and maximums for undesired elements. In longer term contracts, prices are often escalated on labor, fuel, and other vendor processing costs. 10. Suppliers of individual commodities to the chemical industry tend to be limited in number and are generally medium- to large-size producers that supply a few major consumers. 11. The bulk of the mineral volume is for basic chemical uses, sulfur suppliers to sulfuric acid producers and fluorspar for hydrofluoric acid producers being typical examples. These basic chemical products then are used for the production of other products. 12. Shortage of a supply of adequate quality leads consumers to seek substitutes. In the case of fluorspar, much work is being done on recovery of fluorine from phosphate rock. Success in the form of fluorosilicic acid and/or hydrofluoric acid production could, in time, affect the hydrofluoric acid chemical industry. 13. Markets tend to be characterized by cycles of shortage followed by oversupply, with attendant wide price fluctuations. 14. Baniers to trade can have an adverse effect on the necessary movement of industrial minerals used by the chemical industry in international trade. Antidumping laws, quotas, and tariffs can disrupt or dislocate normal markets. 15. Chemical industry consumers may back-integrate for security of supply or for favorable economics, sometimes by joint ownership and often with experienced mining partners.

The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role and the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Estimates of an electrical double layer attractive energy between the bubble and the solid particle are made.

The US Bureau of Mines compared column flotation using either fine or coarse bubbles with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a &.7% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrate with 87% recovery, compared with 43.8% and 43.5% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrates with 85% and 77% recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse- and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5% Cr2O3 with 95% recovery, exceeding conventional flotation, which produced 35.6% Cr2O3 -grade concentrates with 87% recovery.

The extraction of gold from chloride solutions by ion exchange is examined. It is shown that at initial gold concentrations between 1 - 5 ppm, 20 g/l C1- and pH 5, the kinetics of loading on weak base resins are slightly slower than those observed with activated charcoal. Equilibrium loading of auric chloride varies considerably as a function of pH from one resin to another. For all of the resins studied, nearly complete gold extraction was achieved between pH 2 and pH 6.5. Sodium hypochlorite was found to exhibit a slight effect on the equilibrium loading of gold chloride.

Until recently, the generation of electricity was regulated in all states, and the value of generation assets in a regulatory environment for ad valorem taxation were based largely on the book value of the plant plus the rate of return on capital allowed by the state regulatory agency. This method of appraising utility generation assets is inappropriate in a competitive environment because past capital expenditures are not relevant in a competitive environment. However, it is not clear what valuation methods are appropriate after restructuring. This paper identifies important problems and advantages of other appraisal methodologies and makes comments on various valuation and taxation methods.

This paper is an overview of approaches to assessment of ore grade for gold and the platinum group at the exploration stage of a project. Proper sampling techhniques must be complemented by good assaying. In turn, correct assaying has its roots in thoughtful, systematic sampling and sample preparation procedures. While intricacies of the subject matter could occupy a book, we will comment on acceptable sampling approaches, outline a lab hand- ling scheme, and discuss preferred analytical methods. Pitfalls previously encountered by the mining and exploration industry will be highlighted with emphasis on a perceptive under- standing of the nature of ore occurrence. Lastly, focus will be centered on reliable assay approaches.

To assess the future markets for a mineral from a producing district, the following three aspects must be considered: the future growth of the markets, the competitiveness of the district in terms of production costs and reserve adequacy, and the competition from alternative sources of supply. This paper focuses on the first issue by developing a method for predicting the demand for phosphate from trends in the major market for phosphate products, the fertilizer and agricultural market. The paper shows how broad changes in this end-use market for phosphate has evolved over time. These trends are then projected into the future to make an assessment of future phosphate requirements.

The mechanisms leading to the impact of airborne dust particles onto bluff flow obstacles have been extensively reported [1] and widely applied in dust measuring instruments (e.g., impactors) and in dust collecting devices (e.g., filters and scrubbers). If the human head is regarded as a bluff body, particles from dusty flowing air can impact onto the face by virtue of those mechanisms. While a great deal has been researched and written on the nuisance caused to human beings by the entry of dust particles into the body by inhalation through the nose and mouth, there appears to be nothing reported in the scientific literature about the irritation which can be caused by the impact of dust onto the face. And yet there is sufficient evidence to suggest that in certain working environments and under certain conditions, the problem is indeed a real (albeit subjective) one. In the coal mining industry, underground workers are exposed to conditions, involving dust-creating production and handling processes on the one hand and high ventilation rates demanded by the gassy nature of the environment on the other, in which the problem can exist. At the coal face, for example, the movement of powered roof supports ("chocks") can release bursts of dust formed by the crushing action of the supports, which in turn is entrained into the moving air and impacts onto the faces of miners working just downstream. The dust in question contains a large proportion of coarse particles which, while still fine enough to remain airborne for appreciable distances downstream of the point of release, are coarse enough to produce sen¬sation on impact with the skin. Adverse subjective response of workers to such irritation could damage morale and productivity. We have performed laboratory and field experiments to investigate the psychophysical and physiological responses of human subjects to dust impacting onto the face and into the eyes. Since this appears to be the first systematic investigation into these questions, the aim has been to construct a useful scientific framework from which to allow characterisation of the problem of such "fly-dust", and, ultimately, the development of methods for monitoring and controlling it. The main results of our research are given here; the theoretical and experimental details will be presented at greater length elsewhere.

Unlike coarse particles (40-50 µm), the fines (<10 µm) have low collision efficiencies with gas bubbles in flotation process. Among the alternative methods for recovering the fines are their aggregation with coarse particles (carrier flotation) and flocculation of the fines alone (shear-flocculation), prior to flotation. In any case, hydrophobic aggregation is the mechanism involved though the technique is known by different names in literature. This paper deals with theory and state-of-the-art of particle aggregation. To illustrate the dependence of aggregation on particle hydrophobicity, charge and, in turn, the sheer force, the results of quartz-DDACI and galena-xanthate systems are considered. In the flotation of complex ores selectivity is achieved by chemical control and aggregation of particles of the same species is analogous to that; however, more work is necessary on ores for a better understanding of the pulp chemical aspects from the view point of selectivity in aggregation. For a few ores, the results of earlier workers confirm improved recoveries of fines by aggregation prior to flotation.

The EMEW® cell has been developed to overcome a number of inherent limitations in conventional electrowinning technology, particularly the high cost and restricted process windows characteristic of conventional hardware. The EMEW technology has been widely demonstrated to achieve high performance for various metals under chemical conditions well outside the limits required for efficient operation of conventional cells. In particular application of the EMEW cell for recovery of silver offers significant operating and capital cost advantages over conventional Merrill Crowe technology used for cyanide based solutions. The cell also offers process advantages for direct silver recovery from nitric acid solutions. The performance of the EMEW® cell on silver cyanide solutions, producing high grade silver metal in a single step, is accomplished by providing a physical mechanism which presents metal ions to the cathode on a highly efficient and continuous basis. Until now, only the range of typical construction projects which are repeated over and over during the life of a coal mine have been discussed. This chapter looks at underground construction projects which occur only once or twice during the life of any given mine and are major construction projects in both time and cost. These projects usually require the services of an outside engineering and construction firm with hands- on experience in design installation. Because of this involvement with engineering and construction firms (EIC), the role of the construction engineer will change from one of actively de- signing and directing tasks to one of planning, inspection, and quality control. To reflect this role change in the discussions, the focus of this chapter will be changed to a broad overview of project participation. Of course, the projects under consideration in this chapter could easily fill more than one book on their design and installation. In addition, major construction projects are extremely site specific, requiring months of data collection about site geology, physical conditions, and potential excavation and construction requirements. Therefore, no attempt shall be made to discuss any detailed construction aspects as was done in earlier chapters. The purpose of this chapter is to present the fundamental concerns of a staff engineer or supervisor. This engineer does not make the decisions on choosing the EIC firm, but assists and interacts with their project team to accomplish the goals set forth by higher management. The construction topics to be reviewed fall into three main categories. The first category is highlighted by the installation of a main surge bin; the second is typified by the construction of an underground shop; and the third category encompasses special projects such as rotary dumps, crusher stations, and foremen&apos;s offices. These categories highlight the differences between degrees of mine responsibilities for project completion. The first topic is usually a turnkey project by an E/C firm for a given mine. The second topic represents the leading role of the mine in the project with a contractor as a support service or equipment supplier only. The third topic, special projects, is an example of a joint venture-between a contractor (leading partner) and mine management. These roles can change with any given project, but the changes in management responsibilities for the construction engineer can be nicely illustrated for the purposes of this text. The first step toward constructing major mine projects is to analyze the mine which influence their design. From the mine management standpoint, these parameters should reflect the role the mine will play in the project construction. In other words, what is the nature of the proposed mine environment and what are the material, labor, and time requirements needed to assist or direct the chosen engineering and construction firm? Answering these questions requires some basic project planning and cost estimation work. Here, only a general treatment is necessary, since detailed discussions of these topics will follow in Chapters 8 and 10. For those persons interested in the role of the EIC contractor, I suggest beginning by reviewing the article by Beall, "The Role of an Engineering and Construction Contractor," presented in the October 1980 issue of Mining Engineering magazine.

Coal mines in the United States are the most productive in the world in terms of efficient labor employment. This is because of an abundance of workable coal beds, large infusions of capital, improved management practices and continuing competitive pressures. The standard unit of measurement for labor productivity is expressed as tons/manshift, although for underground mines, operators often refer to tons per machineshift. Articles written concerning labor productivity generally focus on measurement techniques, safety considerations, application of technology and training. This article will illustrate by example the impact of labor efficiency (or inefficiency) on the ultimate selling price of coal, f.o.b. mine site. During the past several years, the coal industry has seen significant improvement in labor use. Figure 1 shows the trends in productivity for all active mines in the United States from 1985 through 1994. Productivity in 1985 was 20.1 t/manshift (22.1 st/ manshift). This factor has increased almost linearly throughout that period to 37.5 t/manshift (41.2 st/manshift). This is a 7.2% annual compound growth rate.

INTRODUCTION On November 15, 1990, President Bush signed the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. These Amendments cover many aspects of air pollution control. The provisions which seek to control emissions of "air toxics" may, however, be the most far-reaching and will potentially have the greatest effect on American industry. The Administration has estimated that by the year 2005 industry will be spending $6.7 billion per year on air toxics control. Meanwhile, the Business Round Table has estimated that the price will be far higher, up to $62 billion per year, depending on how EPA and the States implement the program. BASIC REQUIREMENTS Any "major" source of emissions of 189 air toxics will be required to install "MACT." The translation of this statement requires some definitions: •MAJOR SOURCE - A facility (a contiguous property under single ownership and control) which has actual emissions of 10 tons or more per year of any single one of the air toxics or 25 tons per year of any combination of air toxics. •AIR TOXICS - Congress has provided a list of the 189 chemicals on this list. Those that may be important to the mining industry are shown on Table 1. This list can be changed by petition or by EPA. •MACT - Maximum Achievable Control Technology is to be defined by EPA for each industrial source category. EPA says there are about 400 categories. The Act defines MACT as: "the average emission limit achieved by the best performing 12% of the existing sources ... for categories with 30 sources or more" or, "the average emission limitation achieved by the best performing 5 sources in the category." This section describes two exploration models currently used in the search for porphyry exploration deposits: the hood and the vertical cylinder. Each has alternate names within industry and in the literature. The hood is also known as the Climax or Henderson and the vertical cylinder has also been called the Mt. Pleasant model. The paper by Hollister (1978, abstract herewith) refers to the vertical cylinder as the zoned model in reference to the horizontal sulfide and silicate zonation evident in and peripheral to the vertical cylinder of molybdenite mineralization. The distinct ore body geometry in each model type necessitates differing drilling and exploration strategies. Drilling for a hood shape is clearly different from drilling for a vertical cylinder type target. The paper by Wallace et al. (1968, abstract herewith) on multiple intrusion and mineralization at Climax, CO, well describes the hood model. That description is supplemented by the paper by Wallace et al. (1978, abstract with Chap. 37) on the geology of the Urad and Henderson deposits. The paper by Hollister (1978, abstract herewith) describes the vertical cylinder model.

Coal resource characterization usually calls for estimating more than one variable over a block or node simultaneously. Within the realm of geostatistics, each variable has been evaluated independently from the others assuming a lack of significant correlation. Research conducted with coal seams, however, has shown that the variables of immediate interest, such as seam thickness, ash, sulfur content, and density depict some correlation schemes in distinct zones, if not throughout the entire area. The above findings have two immediate consequences : (1) correlation analyses provide guidelines to determine the geologically distinct zones, and (2) where possible, cokriging should be used instead of kriging. This will maximize data utilization decreasing the frequently criticized high estimation errors. The cokriging formulation will also provide more accurate estimates for under sampled variables using better-sampled ones. This is a common case with coal with regard to the non-cored reconnaissance drill holes for which only very few variables were recorded. A case study illustrates the improvements that may be obtained by taking advantage of the intervariable correlations.

The paper concerns the calculation of stresses and displacements in working area of room-and-pillar mining system of cooper ore mines. A three-dimensional rock mass model based on the finite element method has been developed. The complete strain-stress characteristic for pillars has been applied, but for the purpose of modeling the curve has been approximated by three segments of lines: - the first represents a behavior of pillar before a failure, -the second corresponds to a progressive pillar failure phase, - the third represents the part of the curve, where the increase of strains do not cause the stress changes, and it is called the residual strength. The criterion of model stability has been derived, which can be useful for predicting rockmass stability. The programs have been built, which allow to calculate stresses in bar elements, displacements in plate nodes, and estimate the stability of the model, which consists of plate elements and one-dimensional elements with a segment strain-stress characteristic. The programs were used to consider two different problems, which are connected with mining design and the exploitation systems.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has initiated a study of a roof bolter to reduce noise exposure to mine roof bolter operators. An important segment of this research entails determining the affect of various drilling configurations on the performance (penetration rate) and sound power emissions when drilling into granite. Test conditions included various combinations of rotational speeds and thrusts; hex and round drill steels of one inch (1.) and one and three-eighths inch (1 3/8.) diameters; vacuum and wet conditions; and using drill media of differing compressive strengths. This paper will detail the affects of each of these on the performance and sound power level emission. When drilling into granite, it was found that wet drilling generated lower sound power levels and performed better than vacuum drilling.
