A bewildering number of continuous thickeners and clarifiers are used in mineral industries and other heavy industries. General types are: 1. Conventional Thickeners (Fig. 1). 2. Thickeners with Flocculating Feedwells (Fig. 2). 3. Solids Contactors (Fig. 2). 4. Tray Thickeners (Fig. 3). 5. Lamellas (Fig. 4). 6. Conventional Thickeners with Lamellas 7. High Flow, Fluid Bed Thickeners (Fig. 5). These units must be adapted to varied applications. They must provide operating flexibility to meet process needs. Such factors multiply the decisions which must be made prior to the selection of a thickener. The seven types of thickeners listed above, with their variations, share design concepts which limit their application and which can be used to evaluate their performance. Some of these are listed: 1. Feed velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 2. Natural or reagent flocculation is necessary. 3. Horizontal settling area is the basis for capacity. 4. Overflow velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 5. A controlled underflow is necessary. Applying these needs to the basic process concepts is thickener selection. The basic function of a thickener in the minerals industry is the separation of a thickened sludge containing fine solids from water. By-products are of greater importance in lead and zinc mining than in any of the other major base metals. While I think most mining people would accept that statement, you would probably get some widely varying estimates when attempting to quantify the value of by-products in lead and zinc mining. We are now able to do this with our lead-zinc mine cost model. This model was originally developed as a zinc mine cost model to help us forecast long-term zinc supply and price as part of a study we completed in late 1979 entitled "Zinc - The Next Decade". Before demonstrating the importance of by-product revenue to lead- zinc mines, let me first explain how the cost model was constructed. I will discuss the model as it was originally constructed - as a zinc mine cost model. It has subsequently been expanded to include lead only mines and now can Be run either as a zinc or a lead mine cost model.

The alphaDOSIMETER is a complete, integrated system designed to monitor the immediate worksite of underground miners where the disintegration for radon daughters is a risk to the health of mining personnel. The dosimeter weighing little more than one pound is worn by each miner throughout the entire shift and is powered by the miner's cap lamp battery. After this integration period, the unit is connected to a reading network whereupon the day's data is dumped, calculated and stored. Beginning in July 1980, prototype units were subjected to vigorous underground testing in uranium mines in Canada and the United States and in tin mines in Cornwall, U.K. The testing results are summarized and proposals advanced for a typical mine monitoring system utilizing the alphaDOSIMETER.

An improvement in the present day screen sizing methods calls for knowledge on i) how material in the size range: 0.5 x 1.5 times the through-fall opening of the mesh on a deck, splits between the oversize and undersize streams of the deck, and ii) how near-mesh content of the feed affects the screening performance. In the throughput based sizing method given here, this is accomplished through the introduction of a generalized partition curve and a near-mesh factor. A newly developed efficiency factor is employed in addition to the traditional screen sizing factors.

The direct precipitation of uranium with hydrogen peroxide has been known since 1877. Commercial use of the process began in the 1960's. During 1967 the Bureau of Mines assisted the Climax Uranium Co., Grand Junction, Colorado in the development of a uranyl peroxide precipitation process to control a molybdenum impurity problem (1). Atlas Minerals, Moab, Utah has used hydrogen peroxide to control vanadium and sodium levels in their uranium concentrates since 1969 (2). Recently, the use of hydrogen peroxide by the uranium industry has grown, particularly since the increased demand for uranium has led to the processing of low grade ores. Impurities present in low grade ores can be concentrated with the uranium during milling and will substantially complicate the refining of uranium yellowcake concentrates. Consequently, commercial nuclear fuel processors have imposed stringent specifications and penalties to control these impurities. The ability to produce a pure uranium yellowcake can eliminate penalty or reprocessing costs. Hydrogen peroxide precipitation of uranium is specific and quantitative, producing a very high purity product.

"Urban tunneling projects are usually extensively monitored. Most of the instruments used rely on benchmarks providing a sustainable datum throughout the life of the project. The monitoring program also is based on a predicted model of deformation induced by specific construction methods. Events can interfere with those assumptions and eventually alter the stability of these datum. In addition, the anticipated ground conditions and hence the theoretical deformation model often differ from reality. Satellite Radar Interferometry provides useful information to overcome the weakness of the hypothesis made before construction. It is also a powerful tool to ensure the continuity of the monitoring program throughout the life of the project, accurately describing the true effect of the project on the surrounding environment. This paper emphasizes the benefits and limitations of this technique for urban tunneling applications, illustrated by examples of major tunneling projects around the world. MONITORING URBAN TUNNEL PROJECTS Why Monitoring? Retrofitting existing tunnels or constructing new tunnels – including access and retrieval shafts, portals and cross passages – implies an alteration of the neighboring soil structure. Excavating, dewatering, grouting, loading tie backs, etc. artificially modifies the natural equilibrium of the pore-water pressure, of the water table level and of soil stability. In many cases, the effects are immediate: ground loss, deformation of utilities, settlements of buildings, and distortion of infrastructure are a few examples resulting from construction activity.Instrumentation and Monitoring Scope To control and mitigate the risks of damage associated with the above effects, tunnel projects usually include an instrumentation and monitoring program. Depending on the level of geotechnical, structural and environmental risk, the magnitude of this program varies. Projects with a low exposure to risk may restrain the program to conventional methods such as limited topographical surveys and intermittent manual readings of geotechnical instruments. On the other hand, iconic projects with high risk or with controversial history may implement complex and extensive instrumentation plans, involving highly technical solutions such as Automated Motorized Total Stations (AMTS – see opposite Picture 1), Multi-Point Borehole Extensometers (MPBX), In-Place Inclinometers (IPI) and a wide series of fully automated geotechnical, structural and environmental sensors. In this case, all the devices are usually connected to field data loggers collecting raw data around the clock at frequencies ranging from days to seconds, depending on the sensors."

The use of diesel-powered equipment in underground coal mines has increased substantially during the last ten years in an effort to enhance mine safety and productivity. Pennsylvania and West Virginia are two of a number of states with regulations governing the use of such equipment. These states both developed and promulgated regulations before permitting diesel equipment in their underground coal mines because of concern for miners’ safety and health, especially with regard to the contamination of mine ventilation air with diesel exhaust emissions. The major components of diesel exhaust emissions are combustion gases and diesel particulate matter. The gaseous emissions consist of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and unburned hydrocarbons. The diesel particulate matter (DPM) is comprised of solid carbon particles, liquid and solid hydrocarbons, sulfates and moisture. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) also promulgated regulations in an effort to control diesel emissions in underground coal mines. MSHA has adopted threshold limit values (TLVs) for all gaseous components of diesel exhaust, which were established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). MSHA (30 CFR Part 72 Subpart D) has established a tailpipe DPM emissions limit of 2.5 g/hr for diesel engines used in permissible equipment, heavy-duty non-permissible equipment, generators and compressors used in underground coal mines. A tailpipe DPM limit of 5.0 g/hr has been established for light-duty outby diesel-powered equipment. The rationale for the tailpipe emissions limit was that an ambient measurement of DPM in a coal mine was not feasible because there is no established sampling method able to distinguish between coal mine dust and DPM. The stringent tailpipe emissions limit mandates the use of exhaust aftertreatment devices for most diesel engines used in underground coal mines today. One method by which tailpipe DPM can be reduced to MSHA limits involves using an exhaust cooling device in conjunction with a high-temperature, disposable diesel particulate filter.

All mining operations using trucks have a common need to properly match the number and size of hauling units (trucks. wagons. scrapers. etc.) to a loading unit (wheel loader. hydraulic shovel/excavator, cable shovel. push tractor. etc.) to provide the best possible fleet match. Optimizing fleet match minimizes the cost per unit of material moved by that fleet. As haul conditions change (haul length. grade. or rolling resistance), there may be need to adjust the number of trucks to maintain the optimum fleet match. Fleet Production and Cost is a tool which, among other things, can be used to optimize the truck-loader match.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to measure the improvement provided by fine bubbles on the flotation of fine-sized particles (minus 20-um size) in an effort to improve flotation efficiency in our domestic minerals industry. The turbulent velocity distributions of the fluid within the flotation cell were measured as a function of time and position and used to increase the precision of a fine particle, turbulent flotation model. For the mineral system investigated, improved flotation response was obtained under laboratory conditions by using small bubbles and intense agitation. These results matched the model's predicted response.

Kaolin tailings ponds play an important role in reclamation of land and water. Discharges impounded from kaolin plants include oversize fractions consisting of coarse kaolin, mica, quartz as well as magnetically extracted contaminents, acid filtrates, and plant washdown streams. Tailing ponds perform an essential function in sedimentation of particulates, blending and reoxygenation of liquid waste, and neutralization and clarification of discharge water. During the past fifteen years, most kaolin firms have segregated their coarse filler waste to allow for possible reclamation for production of delaminated coating clay. This excess coarse filler fraction constitutes a reserve for future coating clay production.

Geologic condition is one of the most important factors for longwall mining operations, especially, the existence of faults limits the mineable area, or cause stress variations at the longwall face. Recently, a longwall panel passed through a fault at the Shoal Creek Mine of Drummond Company, Inc. The fault was situated diagonally along the longwall face and the coal seam was displaced up to 2.4 m (8.0 ft) in a mode of a normal fault. LoSCoMS (Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System) was used for monitoring shield pressure every minute and interpreting data in terms of setting, developing and final pressures. The results of the analysis regarding the influence of the fault on the shield pressure are presented.

To recycle steelmaking slags for their iron, manganese and lime contents, removal of the phosphorus-bearing dicalcium silicate and calcium phosphate is essential. Slow-cooling of slags was necessary to promote sufficient grain growth to achieve liberation. In situ grain size distribution determination showed that a high soaking temperature, a long soaking time, a very slow cooling rate and the addition of fluorspar promoted grain growth. High gradient magnetic separation on slow-cooled slags removed much of the dicalcium silicate. Liberation modeling was used to discuss the breakage and beneficiation characteristics of the slow-cooled slags.

Reactive barriers, which consume oxygen, are prospective though unconventional alternatives to physical barriers for Acid Mine Drainage prevention. However, a reactive barrier implies a problem of duration. Pore gases were analysed in several wood waste piles in order to understand the factors which control wood degradation and help to determine the effective life span of such a cover. Long term efficiency seems to strongly depend on the degree of water saturation at the bottom of the pile, likely because the development of a microbial biomass in such an environment helps to keep the amounts of nutriments and readily metabolizable organic substrates at a high level, which in turn promotes oxygen consumption.

The principals of McCabe Industrial Minerals, Inc., have been involved in the mining, processing, and marketing of nonmetallic minerals for more than 40 years. In addition to marketing nonmetallic minerals produced by other companies, McCabe Minerals owns and operates three plants that produce headlap-roofing granules, with 25 employees and annual sales approaching $6 million. During its 22 years of operation, the company has developed many different markets, and a list of factors that is used in making our marketing and feasibility studies. These criteria (Table 1) are used extensively by the company in all of its projects, and we present this and other data about the company in this brief report. The incidence of heat stroke in the South African gold mining industry is today small (less than 1 in 10 6 shifts worked). Acclimatization and selection procedures have been developed and applied throughout the industry, underground working conditions have, and are being improved, and personnel are to-day made more aware of heat stress and its consequences than ever before. Although these actions have, over the years, brought about a steady reduction in the incidence of heat stroke (see Figure 1) the small incidence of heat stroke which persists indicates that heat stress is still a problem. This realization provides the stimulus for the work presented in this paper, which has as its primary objective the development of reliable heat stress limits for men working in South African gold mines. [ ] In keeping with recent trends3I4 the approach followed in this paper is based on the physical principles of heat transfer. The development is described of a real-time tracer gas sensing system for use in fell-scale laboratory studies of air flow behavior around mining machines. A semiconductor sintered tin-dioxide gas sensor is used for gas analyses. A data acquisition and analyses software specific to the sensor characteristics was also developed as part of the system. The system permits the study of transient behavior and assists in obtaining a better understanding of the movement of air around mining machines and in the study of the effect of potential airflow modification devices on the dust exposure of face personnel. It seeks to replace the current method of using a centralized infrared gas analyzer that polls several sampling points using an array of solenoid valves and gas line purgers. The polling results in a significant time lapse between the first and the last set of readings. The system described in this paper has the advantages of real-time sampling and safe operation.

This paper presents an outline of several models that have been developed to aid surface mine planners evaluate alternative mining methods and dragline sizes. The models presented belong to a larger group of models that are incorporated in the SEAMPLAN computerized mine and reclamation planning system. SEAMPLAN was developed in the College of Engineering at Montana State University. Initial funding for the development was derived from the USDA Forest Ser- vice and EPA. Enhancements to SEAMPLAN are currently being funded by DOE (Contract DE-AC22-80ET-14173). SEAMPLAN is a comprehensive surface mine and reclamation planning tool that contains a number of major modules: Data Entry and Review, Production Analysis, Reclamation Analysis, and Impact Analysis. The Production Analysis Module contains programs that enable the user to evaluate alternative methods of removing overburden in a surface coal mine and then to assess auxiliary activities required to support the overburden removal operation. A set of these programs addresses the use of draglines for removing overburden. Six basic dragline mining techniques have been modeled. For one-pass dragline operations four methods can be analyzed: (i) simple side cast, (ii) side bench, (iii) extended bench, and (iv) extended bench with side bench. Two methods of two-pass operations are modeled: (i) single dragline, and (ii) tandem draglines.

This article describes three practical applications of the Hill of Value (HoV) methodology within different stages of strategic planning for open-pit mining operations and projects. In the pursuit of optimal mine planning, this study establishes a comprehensive case study during the (i)design phase, by refining key parameters for efficient decisionmaking. (ii)production planning, where the HoV is used to define achievable production rates, enhancing operational effectiveness through a nuanced consideration of mining and processing capacities. (iii)Additionally, the study introduces a conceptual framework for orchestrating the optimal sequence of multiple pits during the planning phase, with a focus on maximizing project value.

This paper discusses the process involved in developing an optimum method of treating and removing heavy metals from water that have leached out from the native rock -prior to discharge back into the environment. Also designed into the system is a manner to stabilize the metals removed as a precipitate, so that they can be disposed of as a non-hazardous waste.
