In this study, the fusion zone microstructure of tungsten inert gas weld of a directionally solidified NhAl-base alloy was examined by the standard metallographic techniques involving the use of optical, analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopes equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer. Fusion zone cracking was observed to be closely associated with interdendritic secondary solidification microconstituents identified as consisting of y, y' and NiMo (Y) phases. Depression of solidification temperature to the terminal ternary eutectic reaction temperature of the system during cooling is suggested as an important factor contributing to the fusion zone cracking.

"Proterozoic plutonic and volcanic rocks in the Franklin Mountains, west Texas, exhibit similar values in average concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU), equivalent thorium (eTh) and equivalent potassium (eK) when compared to Proterozoic igneous rocks of the southwestern United States. Variations of radioelement concentrations for all Proterozoic igneous rocks of the Franklin Mountains range from 1.1 to 357.1 ppm U, 2.1to 259.1 ppm Th and 2.5 to 10.2% K.Recent geologic mapping of the Proterozoic rocks in the Franklin Mountains revealed several types of granites previously unrecognized, and these warrant further exploration for U and Th resources. Fluorite-bearing granites and riebeckite pegmatites are likely targets for further investigation, as these have the highest U and Th concentrations compared to all other granites.IntroductionThis is a summary of the paper presented at the CIM Geology Division Uranium Symposium held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, September 8-13, 1981. Introduction During recent years the work of the Geological Survey in northwestern British Columbia has been in the nature of reconnaissance and exploratory mapping, largely for the purpose of gaining knowledge of the potential mineral-producing zones known to occur along the eastern side of the Coast range, and also to gather such data as might facilitate their exploitation. Commencing with fairly detailed mapping in the more accessible parts, the work has been continued and expanded until now an understanding has been gained of the more general features of a continuous section along the range for a distance of about two hundred miles. Geographically, northern British Columbia is more or less isolated. It is cut off from the central part of the Province by a rugged and mountainous country which, except for the telegraph line and a rarely travelled trail along it, is not penetrated by any developed routes or lines of communication. To the west, it is cut off from the Pacific by the Coast range, an extremely rugged area sixty to eighty miles in width which, except along the few navigable rivers cutting across it, cannot be readily traversed. Politically, it is further isolated in this direction by the narrow strip of south-eastern Alaska which borders the coast and extends inland to the axis of the range.

The Geological Survey is the oldest map making department in the Canadian Government service, and when organized in 1842, one of the first principles to be recognized was the absolute necessity of having good maps. The primary purpose of the Survey has always been geology; but because a graphic representation by means of maps makes the written report .more readily intelligible; because the correlation of known geological facts is often difficult or nearly impossible unless they can be represented on a map; and, because the public demand information shown in this way, the Geological Survey must continue to supply maps; and the supplying of these maps must be considered as an essential part of the work of the Survey. It is a commonly recognized principle of pedagogics that an appeal to the eye is quicker than one to the ear; that children (and others) learn more quickly when a thing is presented to them through the eye rather than through the ear. The application of this principle to the work of the Geological Survey is that, to a large number of people, the message of a map is more quickly grasped, is more readily intelligible, and is in many ways of more interest and value than is the same information in a report. I do not mean that the maps are of more importance than the reports.

En 1995, la Compagnie minière Québec Cartier a mis de l'avant un projet de recherche sur la modélisation de l'écoulement des gaz pour ses fours de frittage à l'usine de bouletage de Port-Cartier. Cette démarche s'inscrivait dans un large processus de collaboration avec l'Université Laval et le Consortium de Recherche Minérale (COREM). L'usine de bouletage possède deux fours de frittage d'une capacité moyenne de 600 tonnes/heure pour chacun des fours. Les fours de frittage sont des systèmes complexes d'échange de chaleur qui fonctionnent à contre-courant (le débit de boulettes versus les débits de gaz). Pour rencontrer les spécifications reliées aux propriétés mécaniques des boulettes, le processus de fabrication requiert des mesures et un contrôle des systèmes très précis. L'information fournie par plus de 70 capteurs (pression, température, puissance, vitesse, hauteur de lit, position de volet....) est utilisée pour manipuler une vitesse de grille, cinq ventilateurs et neuf zones de brûleurs. Malheureusement, les variables qui influencent fortement les mécanismes de frittage, c'est-à-dire les débits de gaz dans les différentes zones du four ainsi que la masse de boulettes qui circulent ne sont pas mesurées. Une méthode est donc proposée pour une estimation en ligne de ces variables. La méthode est basée sur un arrangement de 65 équations reliant pressions, températures et débits de gaz dans les conduites, les ventilateurs, les sections du lit et les fuites (Gosselin, 1998). Pour des raisons de simplification de cet article, seul un sous-système du four sera présenté. Les techniques de réconciliation des données reliées à la conservation de la matière et de l'énergie montrent que la mesure en ligne du débit de boulettes mène à l'estimation des débits de gaz et apporte des avantages intéressants pour le contrôle des variables stratégiques des fours.

The Zinifex's Hobart Smelter uses the paragoethite process to remove dissolved Fe(III) from concentrated zinc leach liquors. This produces a residue consisting primarily of 6-line ferrihydrite (a hydrated Fe(III) oxyhydroxide), several insoluble components derived from the calcined zinc concentrate neutralization agent and other precipitated phases, such as jarosite and silica. The precipitation of 6-line ferrihydrite in the paragoethite process was studied using a laboratory-scale continuous crystallizer, and the conditions were selected to limit high levels of dissolved silica and jarosite. This approach allowed the reactor pH and the rate of precipitation to be correlated with residue solid-liquid separation, particle size, morphology, residual zinc and sulfate concentrations, and phase formation (e.g., goethite, jarosite, schwertmannite, and 2- and 6-line ferrihydrite). These studies delineated the mechanism of 6-line ferrihydrite precipitation in the kinetically controlled paragoethite process, and its inter-relationship with goethite and jarosite precipitation under conditions where 6-line ferrihydrite is favoured. Unexpectedly, the generation of a more crystalline goethite precipitate with larger "primary" particle size did not produce a residue of improved properties, as bulk aggregates dictate the physical properties of the residue and not the crystallinity. Furthermore, it is difficult to precipitate 2-line ferrihydrite or schwertmannite under existing paragoethite process conditions.

"Abstract - "Les Mines Selbaie" is a large, generally low-grade, polymetallic (Zn, Cu, Ag, Au) "giant" volcanic-associated ore deposit in the Harricana-Turgeon belt, which is part of the northern Abitibi Subprovince of Quebec. Economically recoverable mineralization occurred in three zones: the A1 (open pit), A2, and B Zones (underground). The pre-mining resource was 54.9 Mt, including 8 Mt of sub-economic, locally silver-rich massive pyrite. In the Selbaie region, calc-alkaline andesitic volcanics form the "basement." The Brouillan Volcanic Complex formed within an islandarc setting on this regional basement. Evolution of this complex involved the formation of a felsic magma chamber and the development of a large caldera structure over the Brouillan batholith. Second- order linear and sub-parallel faults and rifts developed as a result of back-arc rifting/extension. The edges of these rifts were feeders for linear felsic volcanism (similar to fissural volcanism). During felsic volcanism, the feeder zones acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluids with associated pervasive potassic alteration. The alteration is characterized both vertically and laterally by well-defined quartz, sericite, K-feldspar and/or, locally, biotite halos, to produce a mushroom-shaped morphology. This K-feldspar alteration is not common in most other volcanic-associated ore deposits. Mafic dikes cut all of the geological units and appear to occupy earlier synvolcanic structures. Regional greenschist- assemblage metamorphism and pervasive deformation affect all units. Thrust faults moved part of the Brouillan batholith and basement units over the Mine Sequence. Although there is no relationship between the earlier mineralizing events and these late thrust faults, the thrust faults probably played an important role in location of ore lenses. Three types of mineralization are present: 1) copper-rich veins and hydraulic breccias; 2) disseminated and stringer, low-grade and high volume zinc-copper mineralization; and 3) finely laminated, massive, locally silver-rich pyrite mineralization within structural basins. At the bottom of these basins and at the contact of welded acid tuff (WAT) units, massive pyrite zones are locally enriched in zinc, and contain the possible vestiges of black smoker-like material. The ore metals were probably derived from leached basement andesitic volcanics in a hydrothermal system powered by one or more heat sources within the Brouillan Volcanic Complex. The Selbaie deposits are mainly characterized by: (1) the presence of small volcano-tectonic subsidence basins, which host chemical sediments and volcaniclastic materials; (2) pervasive potassic alteration; (3) locally high-grade silver mineralization (up to 1-2 kg/t Ag); and (4) the presence of random zones of Pb mineralization. The Selbaie deposits can be closely compared with the copper-rich Murgul deposits, which belong to the eastern Pontides metallogenetic province in Turkey. If conventional classification criteria for the volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (e.g., Noranda, Mattabi types, and recent subsea floor deposits) are taken into account, the Selbaie deposits still exhibit many differences in terms of alteration assemblages, physical volcanology and some styles of mineralization (low-grade and large volume). Consequently, the "Selbaie" deposits belong to a new sub-type of volcanic-associated sulfide deposit, which may be used in future exploration programs."

"Construction of underground excavations in squeezing ground conditions faces several technical challenges that can result in delays in production and high costs due to rehabilitation. A review of the behaviour of drifts under squeezing ground conditions was undertaken at the LaRonde mine. In particular it focused on implemented strategies to control the observed large deformations. The mine experiences a large range of squeezing ground conditions, mostly driven by the presence of foliation and high stresses. This results in large deformations over one meter in radius. A comprehensive ground control strategy has been implemented with the aim to manage, rather than arresting drift closure. The evolution and effectiveness of the employed support strategy are discussed based on documented field observations. In complement to the field implementation numerical models are used to provide further insight on the observed squeezing conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe development of underground excavations under squeezing ground conditions is usually associated with excessive rehabilitation and significant failure of ground support due to large deformations. Cost research case studies have concentrated on squeezing ground conditions in tunnelling. An overview of the methods used for the identification and quantification of squeezing and the numerical methods for the simulation of these conditions in tunnelling has been provided by Barla (2002). Numerous support systems that can manage ground deformation are available for civil engineering tunnelling. Nevertheless, the use of these systems in mining would result in high support cost and production delays. Mining operations have higher development rates and shorter service life. This study focuses on the behaviour of underground excavations under squeezing ground conditions in hard rock mining.In a mining context, the magnitude of deformation is usually higher than in civil engineering tunnelling as there is a higher tolerance for operation purposes. Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou (2008) noted that in mining, squeezing is encountered when the total displacement of an excavation reaches at least tens of centimeters over the life expectancy of a supported drive and is associated with considerable damage to the ground support."

Au cours des dernières années cependant, le gouvernement bolivien a modifié ses lois afin de rendre nécessaire la prise en compte de l?environnement dans le processus d?exploitation d?une mine. Dans le cadre d?un projet MRN-ACDI1 visant à renforcer le secteur minier en Bolivie et ses retombées pour la population, l?URSTM2 a été mandaté pour développer et mettre en place un programme académique de gestion environnementale minière, basée sur l?expertise canadienne. Ce programme vise à renforcer les institutions académiques boliviennes responsables de la formation en environnement minier en Bolivie ainsi que les ministères et agences gouvernementales concernées.

This paper reviews the Falconbridge- SMRQ?s Raglan project in northern Quebec and the process that was used in developing its current long-term mine plan. Challenges were many and not only limited to the longevity of the project, numerous ore deposits (both underground and open pit), and a 40km property strike length. As a result of its remote northern location other factors such as progressive reclamation, leachable mine waste, water treatment, and waste management were also part of the plan. A combination of modern planning tools were used to formulate the plan including DataMine, Mine 2-4D, AutoMod Simulation, and an Excel based financial spreadsheet to bring the total plan together. The focus of this paper is to show the complexity of modern mine planning and associated economic modeling of mine processes.

"The effect of heat treatment on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance of A206 aluminum alloy was studied using the breaking load test according to ASTM G139 standard. This method uses the residual strength measurement from tensile test specimens previously stressed axially while exposed to the 3.5% NaCl alternate immersion test according to ASTM G44 standard. The residual strength after exposure is used as a measure of SCC degradation. The performed heat treatments were conventional natural aging T4 and artificial over-aging T7 tempers in addition to artificial aging T6 temper added for purpose of comparison. These tests showed that A206-T4 has a good resistance to SCC at pre-loads up to 100 MPa while A206-T7 was prone to SCC for pre-loads of 0 and 50 MPa, and showed total loss of ductility for pre-load of 100 MPa. Both A206-T4 and A206-T7 pre-loaded at 150 MPa showed poor resistance to SCC. A206-T6 showed the worst susceptibility to SCC as it lost all mechanical resistance at the end of the alternate exposure to 3.5% NaCl solution, even without any applied pre-load. Metallographic analyses showed that the resistance of A206 alloy to SCC is mainly affected by the transition from pitting to intergranular corrosion attack. The initiation and the propagation of intergranular corrosion attack might be assisted by high stress concentrations in the pits, particularly for pre-loads higher than 100 MPa. The transition from pitting to intergranular corrosion can also be promoted by hydrogen evolution from growing pits, which supports crack propagation by hydrogen embrittlement.INTRODUCTIONA206 aluminum-copper casting alloy offers ones of the best mechanical properties among the aluminum foundry alloys. This alloy belongs to the 206 alloy family developed in 1970s as an alternative to the highly resistant and ductile but more expensive Ag containing 201 alloy (Tiryakioglu, 2009). A206 showed also good low cycle fatigue strength (Sigworth, 2002). These properties made A206 alloy a strong candidate for some vehicles lightweighting applications. In spite of its interesting properties cited above, A206 alloy was rarely used in critical applications due to its tendency for hot tearing and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Studies of A206 hot tearing behavior showed that this tendency can be reduced by improving castability and by grain refinement (Sigworth, 2002). The optimisation of the casting design can also prevent the tendency toward hot tearing. The SCC of aluminum-copper alloys arises from their susceptibility to localised corrosion, especially in chloride containing media. The localised corrosion in Al-Cu alloys is caused mainly by their heterogeneous microstructure, where the presence of many phases leads to the formation of micro-galvanic coupling with the matrix. However, most of the studies aimed at investigate the SCC of Al-Cu alloys concerned the wrought ones, especially the AA2024 alloy tempered in the T3 (or derivative) condition and few studies concerned the 206 and cast alloys in general (Alexopoulos, 2009 and 2016; Campestrini, 2000; Vogt, 1998; Talamantes-Silva, 2008; Zhang, 2003). Jean et al. (Jean, 2009) studied the effect of heat treatment on SCC behavior of B206 alloy using alternate immersion technique and grain boundary attack method and did not find direct correlation between the two methods. Another study showed that aging of 206 alloy may make a casting susceptible to SCC (Sigworth, 2002). However, these studies did not provide detailed information about the mechanisms of SCC of 206 alloy, as well as the effect of the stress intensity. The present work investigates the effect heat treatments and the stress intensity on the morphology of the corrosion attack and the SCC behavior A206 aluminum alloy. This study uses the breaking load test according to ASTM G139. This test utilizes direct tensile specimens and was developed to give a more quantitative measure of the SCC performance of resistant aluminum"

"Potentially economic stratiform barite-sulphide deposits have recently been discovered in Devonian basinal facies rocks of the Kechika Trough of northeast British Columbia. This new mineral district is over 180 kilometres long and includes nine major occurrences, namely Driftpile Creek, Bear, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Fluke, Pie, Elf, Kwadacha and Sika. The Cirque is the largest known deposit, with reserves of atleast 30 million tonnes averaging 10per cent combined lead-zinc and 47 grams per tonne silver. The footwall rocks for the Cirque and other strati/rom barite-sulphide deposits in the area are rhythmically bedded baritic and pyritic carbonaceous black shales, siliceous argillites and cherts of probable Mid to Late Devonian age. These siliceous rocks overlie a succession of proximal to distal turbidites which are the basinal equivalent of Early to Mid Devonian carbonate reefs to the east. The siliceous facies is overlain by deeper-water black shales of probable Late Devonian to Mississippian age.Preliminary stratigraphic and sedimentological investigations suggest that the strati/arm massive pyrite and bedded barite deposits formed in third-order euxinic basins within a northwest-trending structurally controlled trough which, in the southern part of the district, was bounded by carbonate reefs. The exhalative event, which appears to have been accompanied by synsedimentary faulting, took place during the early stages of a major eastward-directed marine transgression that was probably related to rapid crustal subsidence. Dewatering of metal-enriched shales and subsequent brine discharge along fault zones within the trough, with the exhaled brines accumulating in seafloor depressions, is the mechanism envisaged for formation of the deposits. Convective circulation systems may have been established about the more deep-seated faults, in response to elevated heat flow levels."

"Canada has a special place in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy because it is the only country in the western world that is a significant producer of all the major non-ferrous metals; aluminum, copper, lead, magnesium, nickel and zinc. This large non-ferrous pyrometallurgy industry has developed because of Canada's abundant mineral wealth and energy resources. Table I summarizes the number of primary non-ferrous production facilities in Canada and their share of western world production.Production of non-ferrous metals is a mature, capital intensive business and its basic processes have been in use for many years. Nevertheless, these processes have continued to evolve in response to changing needs and external pressures; such as the energy crisis of the early seventies; historically low metal prices in the early eighties and the continuing pressure to reduce plant emissions and improve in-plant working conditions. Canada's major metallurgical companies: Alcan, Cominco, Falconbridge, Inco and Noranda have played a leading role in pioneering new process technology and continue to meet the difficult challenge of keeping their operations competitive in the global metals market. This paper will try to give an overview of the major developments in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy, largely from the Noranda and Canadian perspectives, highlighting the current status of process technology and possible future directions.AluminumCanada has the world's second largest aluminum smelting industry and its capacity has expanded rapidly in recent years with the completion of several large projects in Quebec. The location and capacity of the Canadian aluminum smelters are given in Table 2. All these plants use the Hall-Heroult process, that was invented over a century ago but over the last twenty years considerable improvements have been made to increase productivity, reduce power requirements and emissions.The developments in aluminum cell technology can be illustrated by the experience at Noranda Aluminum. In 1971, Noranda Aluminum started its first pot line using Kaiser's P69 prebake cell, which was considered, at that time, the best available technology. The P69 cell was designed primarily for high productivity, operating at 150 000 amps and high current density to produce just over tonne Al per cell-day. The P69 cell is a simple design, typically operating at about 88070 current efficiency and 15 800 kWh/tonne Al. When Noranda Aluminum decided to expand in 1980, the Alcoa 697 cell was selected as it then represented the most proven, stateof- the-art technology. This cell is similar to that installed at Alcan's new Grande Baie and Laterriere smelters and is designed to operate at 180000 amps and 93070 current efficiency, producing about 25070 more aluminum per pot-day than the P69 cell using about 15070 less power. The 697 cell has a much more sophisticated cell design, with very good balancing of the magnetic field giving a flat metal pad and allowing efficient operation at the higher amperage. Alumina is fed via point feeders that provide an almost continuous feed allowing close control of the alumina level in the bath and the use of low-ratio bath composition, giving much higher current efficiencies."

SIDBEC commenced detailed planning of major capital expenditures to install integrated steelmaking facilities in 1969. Today, less than IO years later, SIDBEC and its subsidiaries have completed major mining, concentrating, pelletizing, direct reduction ? electric furnace steelmaking and continuous casting plants. The total cost of these projects was almost 1 billion dollars. The philosophy behind the project planning and the evolution of management control are explained. These extensive projects were undertaken during a period of exceptional inflation and a disturbed labour climate, but were nevertheless completed with only modest overruns, with good control of timetables and with exceptionally good start-up performance. Project planning, relations with consulting engineers, introduction of new technology, purchasing and field management and cost control are discussed.

Dans les terrains Paléozoïques des BassesTerres du Saint-Laurent et des Appalaches, les ressources identifiées comprennent les grès quartzitiques purs du Croupe de Potsdam (Cambrien), exploités notamment à Saint Canut au nord de Montréal comme source de sable de silice pour l'industrie du verre; les arénites quartzitiques des Formations de Val-Brillant (Silurien moyen) et de Kamouraska (Ordovocien inférieur) exploitées dans l'est du Québec comme source de fondant métallurgique; les grès friables de la Formation de Guigues (Ordovicien) au Témiscamingue, à partir desquels on produit des sables de silice utilisés notamment en fonderie et en filtration. Dans la province structurale du Grenville, au nord du fleuve Saint-Laurent, les métaquartzites purs du Supergroupe de Grenville représentent une source importante de silice pour la production de silicium, de ferro-silicium et de carbure de silicium. Des veines et amas de quartz ont aussi été exploités un peu partout au Québec comme source de fondant métallurgique ou de silice ultra-pure pour la production de silicium métal. Quelques dépôts de sables naturels, généralement d'origine marine ou deltaïque sont finalement exploités dans la région de Montréal comme source de sable pour des usages n'exigeant pas un produit de haute pureté.

MR. F. E. LATHE: In studying any subject whatever, one should at least occasionally stand back from the canvas, as it were, and take a broad view of the picture. It is such a view of the subject of industrial minerals that Dr. Wilson has given us today, and, in consideration of our efforts to utilize Canada's resources to the utmost in the present emergency, it seems most timely. I shall confine my remarks on the subject to the resources of the atmosphere and hydrosphere. We seldom stop to realize our dependence upon the atmosphere, not merely as a source of the oxygen we breathe but also of other indispensable elements. As recently as the beginning of the present century, grave concern was felt lest the rapidly increasing population of the world should ultimately starve for lack of the nitrogen required for crop growth. I recently noticed a reference to the Scientific American for March, 1890-just fifty years ago-in which an account is given of work on the fixation of nitrogen, which, said the article, "leads to the conclusion that while cyanides and ammonia may be thus produced experimentally, there are as yet insuperable difficulties in the way of adapting those methods to industrial purposes". Y et, in the early part of the present century, the development of the arc, cyanamide, and synthetic ammonia processes of nitrogen fixation was such as to remove, for all time to come the possibility of a shortage of nitrogen. Today, the atmosphere is by far our greatest source of nitrogen, and the capacity of the nitrogen fixation plants of the world is at least 4,000,000 tons annually-much more than can at present be utilized. Pure oxygen or oxygen-enriched air offers great possibilities in metallurgy and industrial chemistry, but, so far, little application has been made. In a paper presented to the Institute in 1926, 1 pointed out the theoretical savings which could be effected by the use of oxygen in burning carbon-when the gases pass off at 2,460°F., the fuel saving is no less than 50 percent. The use of oxygen on a commercial scale is intimately tied up with the question of refractories, but we should not forget that the possible changes in metallurgical practice by the use of oxygen are truly of revolutionary character.

This paper describes the effects of slurry viscosity on the selection-for-breakage and breakage distribution parameters in the wet grinding of cres. A series of experimental tests were run on laboratory scale ball mills. Slurry viscosities were modified by varying the solids/water ratio with and without the presence of selected chemicals. Very consistent and predictable correlations are shown to exist. The grinding parameters were calculated using a computerized back -calculation technique developed by Klimpel and Austin. Industrial scale circuit calculations and preliminary plant trial data suggest that considerable increases in throughput and/or fineness of grind can he achieved through the judicious use of chemical additives.

"THE Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation, through its subsidiaries, the Old Sydney Collieries and the Dominion Coal Company Limited, produces 4% million tons of coal annually from eight submarine collieries situated on the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island. The present workings have a frontage of 20 miles and extend 31/2 miles under the Atlantic ocean on gradients varying from 4 deg. to 24 deg. To date, some of the workings have reached .a depth of cover up to 2,800 feet.The pitching seams, the annual seaward advance, the resulting depth of cover and the rdatively soft roof and floor have necessitated the adoption of extensive longwall mining, with room-and-pillar mining con-fined to areas above the 1,000 foot cover line, where 60 per cent of the -coal is left standing in pillars to support the ocean floor. Longwall mining accounts for 87 per cent of the total production with the remaining outputs obtained from room-and-pillar work and the narrow work development. Seventy-four per cent of the longwall production and 41 per -cent of the room and development production is completely mechanized.Although 2 tons of water is pumped from the collieries for each ton of coal mined, the working sections are relatively dry as the heavy make of water is essentially surface drain-age from the land crop areas. The dry workings and the long haulage distances, which in many cases exceed 4 miles, have resulted in a continuing programme to combat the dust hazard, both at the working face and along the mine roadways."

Metallurgical plants are typically large, complex facilities. Their design is a multidisciplinary activity with a wide range of inputs, based on: the business case; metallurgical and process requirements; and the main processing equipment selection. Many constraints limit what can be achieved. Appropriate phasing of the design and development, and clear go/no-go decision criteria, are critical to successful implementation of a plant design project. Risk management concepts are used as a framework for successful project development, working from the business case, through project development, to implementation and startup, paying constant attention to technology, safe design, and sustainability. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The subject of “Metallurgical Plant Design” is the design of metallurgical plant facilities in the broadest sense. Plant design represents the culmination of many multidisciplinary activities: knowledge of process metallurgy is applied to design facilities to manufacture useful, economical, metal-based products. In the field of metallurgy, plant design is often overlooked, and its unique requirements are commonly not well understood, let alone appreciated. This book is a contribution to remedying this situation. The focus is the specifics of the metals industries, because an extensive literature already exists on the general topic of plant design.
