"Belleterre Quebec Mines, Limited, is a subsidiary of Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited. The property is in Guillet township, Quebec, 45 miles due east of Haileybury, Ontario. It is accessible by 72 miles of gravelled road from New Liskeard, Ontario (Fig. 1).Gold production at the property commenced in 1936 and to March 31st, 1945, had exceeded $9,000,000. For the past 3 years the milling rate has averaged 325 tons a day and the gold recovery about $14 a ton.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe rocks of the district consist of Keewatin-like volcanics conformably overlain by Timiskaming-like sediments. Together they form the remnant of an easterly plunging anticline engulfed by granite (Fig. 2). The pregranite intrusives consist of diorite, gabbro, and ultrabasic rocks, occurring as dykes, sills, and irregular stocks. Dykes of porphyry and lamprophyre presumably related to the batholithic intrusive are common in this area. The veins of quartz are also probably derived from the batholithic intrusives. A few dykes of Keweenawan-type diabase have been observed."

Inco Limited has been evaluating options for streamlining the overall flowsheet at its Sudbury, Ontario operations to improve productivity and to minimize the cost of at¬mospheric emissions reduction. Some of the flowsheets being considered include vari¬ous levels of copper/nickel separation at the Clarabelle Mill where all Inco's Sudbury Basin ores are processed. This paper reports on the laboratory and miniplant studies car¬ried out during the flowsheet development for a commercial Cu/Ni separation plant. There are two potential feed streams for Cu/Ni separation. It was determined that Cu/Ni separation from the rougher concentrate requires no regrind, and a very clean copper concentrate is produced, but the recovery of copper is limited to about 70% from ore. Cu/Ni separation is more difficult from the bulk concentrate because of the presence of excess flotation reagents in the slurry and due to locked particles. By replacing the slurry water with clean process water, and by addition of some hydrogen peroxide, entrainment is minimized and excess reagents are removed from the surface, providing a satisfactory separation of copper from nickel. Fine regrinding is required to increase liberation of the locked particles and to obtain 85% copper recovery with minimal nickel contamination of the concentrate.

Corrosion is a significant factor affecting the capacity and working life of ground support. The paper explores a relatively simple method to predict the load capacity of a support system using a Monte Carlo stochastic approach. The analysis uses published field data on existing ground support to evaluate the applicability of the method and its predictive performance. Discussion on corrosion rates found in the field and predicted from laboratory measurement is provided.

Mining firms are widely criticised for their adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time many firms in the industry devote extensive resources, both financial and managerial, to the reduction or elimination such impacts. Very considerable improvements have been made, although these are sometimes overshadowed by a few high-profile accidents, such as the occasional collapse of a cyanide-containing tailings dam. In parallel, much effort is also directed at projecting a positive environmental image, as witnessed by extensive environmental reporting, both on paper and increasingly through web-platforms. Mining projects today almost invariably involve some form of environmental protection. In industrial countries regulations in this area are extremely stringent, as is enforcement. In less well developed countries, regulation and enforcement may be weaker, but firms are in many cases and for a number of reasons committing themselves to high levels of environmental protection, even if they might get away without doing so. Research in the area of environmental performance of mining firms has so far paid much attention to concepts such as sustainability indicators and the sustainability of individual firms. Given the still raging debates about the appropriate way to determine the degree to which any given firm is sustainable (Welford 1995) as well as the usefulness of what will in the final analysis be a value judgement, anyone on the sidelines of the debate will come back to the fundamental issue, how is knowledge that a particular firm has been judged ?sustainable? going to be made use of. This issue remains unresolved, which may explain the lack of progress in formulating a useful definition of a sustainable firm The question addressed in this paper is not so much about what firms are doing on the ground or in any particular case of environmental protection, but more in the subsequent use of these efforts - and by extension - on the overall direction of corporate environmental strategy. The fundamental problem facing all mining firms is that they cannot easily benefit from unilaterally reducing their environmental impact. The firm can of course avoid liability and keep a variety of stakeholders happy and hence experience lower costs of obtaining the [input] resources they need (in a broad sense, not just minerals), but this represents only part of the opportunities available form pursuing an environmental strategy (Reinhardt 2000). The other part, which may have an enormous potential, involves the concepts of competitor management and product differentiation. The logic of keeping stakeholders happy has been most forcefully argued by Pfeffer and Salanchick (1978) who link the behaviour of firms in all domains to their ability to obtain the resources they need, at a cost that is lower than it would otherwise be (Pfeffer & Salanccik 1978). Several varieties of strategy can be included under this heading, including cost reduction and risk management. The alternative logic is to convince customers that they want to pay more for minerals supplied by mining firm X or directly attributable to mine Y, or by making all mineral users pay more. These two strategies, which may be referred to as product differentiation and competitor management, respectively (Reinhardt 2000) are related to the demand side of mineral supply, whereas cost reduction and risk management are related to the supply side. Gold leaching in thiosulfate solution has attracted widespread research interest through the last two decades primarily due to its perceived environmental benefits in comparison to the conventional gold cyanidation technique. However, the data on the corrosion and/or corrosion-induced failures of plant infrastructure materials in the solutions relevant to thiosulfate gold leaching are very limited. Accordingly, this study aims to characterize the electrochemical corrosion behavior of stainless steel 316L in the thiosulfate gold leaching solutions. Electrochemical corrosion response was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The morphology of corroded specimens was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy.

"This paper describes the development of a milling circuit for the complex Midwest orebody, containing a high-arsenic uranium ore typical of that found in northern Saskatchewan. The results of preliminary bench-scale test work are summarized. Data from a pilot-plant program carried out at the Ontario Research Foundation are provided for the selected mill flowsheet. Also described are waste circuits which have been established to produce effluents of acceptable quality. Pilot-plant testing of sub-aerial tailings deposition is also described. The applicability of manufacturers' equipment for the various circuits in the flowsheet is discussed.IntroductionThe Midwest uranium deposit is in northern Saskatchewan, 700 km north of Saskatoon, near the eastern edge of the Athabasca BasinDevelopment work on the project is directed by Canada Wide Mines Ltd., a subsidiary of Esso Resources Canada Limited. Participants in the project are Esso Resources Canada Limited, Numac Oil and Gas Ltd., Bow Valley Industries Ltd ., Mink Mining Corporation and Midwest Mining Corporation.The deposit consists of a series of flat lenses of massive ore overlain by a halo of lower-grade sandstone ore. The massive ore is formed of pitchblende and nickel arsenides, along with clay, and averages about 10% U and 9% Ni, The principal minerals are pitchblende (UO2-UO3), coffinite (U(SiO4)1-x(OH)4x), gersdorffite (NiAsS), niccolite (NiAs) and rammelsbergite (NiAs2). The sandstone ore, a friable clay-rich sandstone with sooty pitchblende, averages about 0.4% U and 0.6% Ni. Typical expected mill feed analyses are given in Table I.A bench-scale development program ore was carried out during the period from August 1978 to May 1981 in the laboratories of Lakefield Research of Canada Ltd. (Lakefield), (Lakefield, Ontario), the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI), (Golden, Colorado) and, to a lesser extent, the Ontario Research Foundation (ORF), (Mississauga, Ontario) and the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC), (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Direction of the development studies was shared by Canada Wide Mines Ltd. and its metallurgical consultants, A.H. Ross and Associates. Input was received from Envirotech, Enviroclear, Interox America, and Knight and Piesold Ltd."

"The CIM Careers Task Force has addressed industry's concern of a perceived shortage of skilled personnel over the coming decade. The industry is faced with a fundamental shift by young Canadians away from scientific and engineering careers, coupled with the fact that today 's students know little about the minerals industry and have a poor image of it.The responses to two questionnaires which were distributed to CIM members, government, professional associations, and educational institutions, formed the backbone of the Task Force position paper, which presents a shopping list of ideas and initiatives for consideration and to facilitation by the various organizations concerned.Tackling the image of the minerals industry is part of the answer to the careers crisis. On the positive side, the minerals industry provides the allure of a treasure hunt for young people and is seen as a significant contributor to the economy. It is understood to be well paying, provide good opportunities for advancement, individualism, and travel, and to be rich in esprit de corps. Enhancement of these positive aspects of the image can take place at all student age levels.Numerous initiatives tackle the negative aspects of the image. Young people perceive the industry to be environmentally damaging, which is the most crucial aspect that needs to be addressed. The industry is seen as still in the pick-and-shovel days and as a sunset industry that is running out of ore. Work in the minerals industry is perceived as dangerous and lacking glamour. And finally, the perceived remoteness of operations and exploration is seen as a drawback to a largely urbanized student group.Tackling young peoples' curiosity and interest in the minerals industry throughout grade school and encouraging postsecondary science and engineering students to enter the minerals industry by ensuring summer employment is the second part of the equation.The CIM Careers Task Force position paper develops strategy to attract and maintain interest of students in grade school, junior high, senior high school, and in post-secondary levels. The strategy outlines initiatives targetted at each of the educational levels and action plans to accomplish the objectives."

"Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) is a metal additive manufacturing technology that creates highly complex components by fusing metal powder into a solid part. In this study, the impact of surface roughness on corrosion resistivity of AlSi10Mg_200C alloy manufactured through DMLS was investigated. The as-printed DMLS-AlSi10Mg _200C alloy was subjected to various surface finishing processes including grinding and sandblasting. The corrosion performance of the surfaces was then evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization testing and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution to mimic seawater environment. Surface characterization and corrosion morphology of the samples were assessed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. The results of this study show that the surface finishing process and the resultant surface roughness has a significant impact on the corrosion resistivity of the DMLS-AlSi10Mg_200C alloy in the seawater environment.INTRODUCTION Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), also known as Selective Laser Melting (SLM) (Sames, List, Pannala, Dehoff, & Babu, 2016), Laser Beam Melting (LBM), or Laser Metal Fusion (LMF) (Herzog, Seyda, Wycisk, & Emmelmann, 2016), is an additive manufacturing process that utilizes a precise, high-power laser to micro-join powdered metals and alloys layer by layer to form almost fully dense and functional components in three dimensions from the 3D computer-aided design (CAD) data. Complex geometries not possible with conventional manufacturing processes can be readily manufactured with high accuracy using the DMLS process with no need to time-consuming tooling."

Application of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria to flotation of Sarcheshmeh low-grade copper sulphide ore was studied. Sarcheshmeh low-grade ore contains pyrite, which causes some problems in the flotation of copper minerals. In this study, A. ferrooxidans was used to change the surface chemistry of pyrite and copper sulphide ores and consequently, their flotation behaviour. In the presence of A. ferrooxidans and xanthate as a collector, pyrite was depressed whereas chalcopyrite and other sulphide minerals were unaffected. In addition, the pulp pH remained unchanged. It was shown that the surface chemical properties of the bacteria can be manipulated successfully to achieve the desired effects in a flotation process. The results showed that the recovery of pyrite in the presence of the bio-depressant is 50% lower than when no bacteria were present. At the same time the recovery of chalcopyrite remained unchanged.

"With the purpose of increasing the extrudability of lean alloys, we reduce levels of the alloying elements Mg and Si in a 6xxx extrusion alloy. To avoid sacrificing strength, we investigate the compensating effect of smaller amounts of lithium and germanium, alone and in combination. Recent studies by atomically resolved high angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations have demonstrated that while Li replaces Mg, Ge substitutes Si in the columns in the hardening ß’’-phase. Several studies have shown that Ge replaces Si in other precipitates as well, and that both Li and Ge promote precipitation and can improve macroscopic properties, like strength and thermal stability. The scope of the current work has been to investigate and document the combined effect of the two alloying elements. Of the investigated alloys, the one containing both elements displayed highest hardness, corresponding with a significant increase in precipitate number density. We used HAADF-STEM to determine the extent of Li and Ge in the precipitate structures.INTRODUCTION The two most important alloying agents, with respect to age hardening of the 6xxx alloy series, are Mg and Si. In general, 6xxx alloys are formed into their final shapes by rolling or extrusion, before being age-hardened at elevated temperatures around 180°C. The hardening effect during this stage is due to the formation of metastable, semi-coherent, precipitate needles along the three < 001>Al directions generally following the precipitation sequence (Marioara, Nordmark, Andersen, & Holmestad, 2006): Supersaturated solid solution ? atomic clusters ? AN explosive is a solid or liquid substance which, when fired by some means, changes into a gaseous product occupying a volume very much greater than its original volume. The great speed at which this change takes place causes the explosive to exert a sudden blow on adjacent material. It is this action which is effective in blasting operations when the explosive, confined in a shot-hole, is fired. All explosives are similar in one respect, in that the change into the gaseous state is accompanied by the production of hot gases or flame. This results from the rapid combustion of the solid or liquid ingredients. Ex-plosives differ greatly, however, in the speed at which the reaction takes place. Black blasting powder, for instance, reacts comparatively slowly, hence the flame persists for an appreciable length of time. High explosives, on the other hand, react much more quickly; consequently, the flame is of much shorter duration. In &apos;closed-light&apos; or &apos;gaseous&apos; coal mines, the use of ordinary explosives is generally prohibited, due to their inherent ability to ignite gas or coal-dust by reason of the flame which they produce when fired. For instance, black blasting powder, which produces a flame of long duration, is not ordinarily considered safe to use in such mines; neither are ordinary dynamites, as their flames, while shorter than that of black blasting powder are, nevertheless, of sufficient temperature and duration to cause ignition of fire-damp or coal-dust. For this reason, specially formulated high explosives, called &apos;permitted&apos; explosives, should invariably be used in such mines.

Phosphates and fluorides are used as regulators for the removal of silicates from diasporic-bauxite both in direct and reverse flotation. While using dodecylamine chloride as a collector, micro-flotation studies showed that sodium hexametaphosphate has stronger depressing power on diaspore than on silicate minerals with increasing sodium hexametaphosphate concentration at pH 6.5, but sodium fluorosilicate shows poor depression on diaspore with increasing sodium fluorosilicate concentration at the same pH. Zeta potentials of diaspore and silicate minerals become more negative both in the presence of sodium hexametaphosphate and sodium fluorosilicate. Adsorption density studies indicated that the adsorption density of sodium hexametaphosphate on diaspore is much higher than that on silicate minerals at the concentration of 75 mg/L. FTIR spectroscopy studies show that sodium hexametaphosphate interacted with the Al atoms exposed on the diaspore and silicate minerals surfaces to form P?O?Al bonds through the P02 groups. It is possible that sodium fluorosilicate interacted through F- or [SiF6]2- with silicate minerals surfaces based on the analysis by AES.

In non-ferrous metal smelting, when the concentrate entering the furnace contains high levels of moisture, energy requirement for heating and drying increases and large volumes of exhaust are produced. To solve this problem, rotary dryers and flash dryers using direct heating, and also steam dryers using indirect heating have all been used for drying concentrate. The focus of this paper is to present the development and current applications of the Kumera Rotary steam dryer. The advantages of this technology are numerous, including reduced heating requirements, environmental friendliness, operation reliability and minimum maintenance needs; making it a top choice for drying concentrate.

THE basic products of the Company are lead and zinc. Around 950 tons of these metals are produced each day. In the last decade, the production of by-products has increased to such an extent that they are now nearly as large an operation as that of the base-metals. Of the many by-products, the most objectionable, and up to a few years ago the most useless, was the sulphur. The sulphur comes in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is in the ore chiefly as lead, zinc, and iron sulphide. By selective flotation, these three sulphides are separated into the lead concentrates, the zinc concentrates, and the mill tailings. These mill tailings contain the bulk of the iron and the sulphur. Of the 6,5CO tons of ore treated per day, about 5,000 tons are wasted to the mill tailings dump, and, while now valueless, will in future years undoubtedly be used as a source of iron and sulphur. There are about 1,500 tons of sulphur and 2,200 tons of iron per day in the tailings, and about 400 tons of sulphur left in the total concentrates. In the recovery of lead and zinc in the pure form, the first step is the roasting operation. Here, most of the sulphur is driven off as sulphur dioxide in the gases. It has always been apparent that this sulphur should be. recovered and utilized if possible. At the same time, this would cure the smoke nuisance. Because, in spite of the low concentration of sulphur dioxide and the fact that it was discharged from stacks at an elevation of 400 feet above the plant, some damage to vegetation close to the plant had been experienced.

Cutting fluids play important roles during machining, including the reduction of friction and temperature. Using a cutting fluid, however, degrades the quality of the environment and increases machining costs. The aim of the present research work is to study the effect of cutting fluids and their interactions with cutting parameters on the quality of holes during the drilling of 6061-T6 aluminum alloys. The lubrication types and modes investigated are dry machining, flood lubricant machining and minimum quantity lubrication machining (MQL), while the part quality criteria include the surface finish, the dimensional accuracy, and burr forms and sizes. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to investigate the formation of built-up edges (BUE) in the drill flutes as well as the surface texture of drilled holes. It was found that dry machining and MQL machining can produce parts having quality levels comparable to those obtained in wet machining, when using the optimal cutting conditions.

"Corrosion is an electrochemical process that causes degradation and deterioration of various steel works (pipelines, drains, cisterns) whether they are buried, immersed, or not. Worldwide, we estimate that corrosion destroys a quarter of the annual production of steel at a rate of 5 tons per second. Several techniques are used to protect against corrosion. Among these processes, Cathodic protection, which is regarded as the best technique to assure the protection of steel, works against this phenomenon. This is achieved either by a system of reactive anodes, or by the technique of impressed current protection or other techniques. Before any installation of cathodic protection, a preliminary study and pre-evaluation of certain parameters must be made. In the present work, we will present an example of dimensioning of an installation of cathodic protection by imposed current of a pipeline using solar energy, where we discuss the following items:•,Evolutions of the potential as well as current along the pipeline and their respective expressions deduced from the laws known as telegraphists;•,Range of protection (potential of protection along the pipeline);•,Influence of the isolation resistance of the coating on the range of protection;•,Effect of the aging of the coating and its influence on the current of protection."

The effects of laser power and joint gap on the welding quality of 2-mm butt joints of ZE41A-T5 sand castings were investigated using a continuous wave 4 kW Nd:YAG laser system and 1.6-mm EZ33A-T5 filler wire at a welding speed of 6 m/min and surface defocusing. The smooth weld profiles with the minor welding defects were obtained at a laser power of 4 kW and joint gap of 0.3-0.4 mm. The hardness values in the fusion zone are similar to those of the base metal but there is a drop in the heat-affected zone after a natural aging of 18 months.

In order to understand what governs the leaching of exchangeable rare earth (RE) and impurities and enhance the RE leaching process, the effects of the concentration of ammonium sulfate, pH and leaching temperature on the migration of RE and aluminum (Al) during the leaching of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore was studied. The elution curves for ammonium ion (NH4 +) were also studied to reduce the consumption of the leaching agent. It was found that a high concentration of leaching agent can enhance the leaching process of RE and Al, reduce the breakthrough volume of NH4 + and more rapidly obtain the equilibrium of NH4 +. However, excessive leaching agent can both increase the cost and the burden on the environment. There is almost no variation on the elution curves of RE and Al in the pH range of 4-8 and control of the pH of the leaching agent can be omitted. It is better for the leaching work to be done in summer since higher temperatures can enhance the RE leaching process and improve the use ratio of ammonium. Using 0.1 mol/L ammonium sulfate for leaching 250 g RE ore, 95.42% RE extraction can be obtained when the volume of leachate is 102.6 mL. At this moment, only 18.17% of NH4 + is used to exchange RE and 49.22% of NH4 + is left in the leachate that can be reused as leaching agent by replenishing ammonium sulfate. The results of our studies can provide theoretical guidance for high efficiency and low consumption exploitation of RE ores.

At present, most ore milling is done in tumbling mills, consisting of huge cylinders turning on their horizontal axis. This rotational motion causes the ore charge and the grinding balls to interact by impact, compression and abrasion, to reduce the size of the ore. This method is very inefficient since only around 12% of the energy supplied is used for actual grinding, the rest being used in moving the large mass of balls and ore within the mill. This work aimed at better understanding the milling process by evaluating the movement of the load through the Discrete Elements Method (DEM). First, the number of bodies (balls and ore) moving inside the mill is determined, to correlate to the potential impacts that constitute one of the milling mechanisms. Then, the number of high energy impacts is evaluated to correlate to the bodies in motion. At this stage, a differentiation between grinding media and the ore, as well as between the types of contact taking place in the mill, has to be made. This latter issue is of great relevance since from the five identified contact types (ball-ball, ball-liner, ore-ore, ball-ore and ore-liner) only the last three actually contribute to the milling process, the other two causing structural damage to the mill.
