Uranium exploration expenditure in Australia reached a record level of A$220.5 million in 2008, which has subsequently declined to A$185.2 million for the year ended 30 June 2009. Recent discoveries include: Ranger 3 Deeps east of Ranger open pit (Northern Territory), Pepegoona and Yadglin sandstone hosted deposits (South Australia), and Thunderball project (Northern Territory). Australia?s Reasonably Assured Resources recoverable at costs of <US$80/kg U at June 2009 are estimated to be 1,210,000 t U, 4% higher than the estimate for December 2008. The main additions were in the south eastern portion of the Olympic Dam orebody. The Olympic Dam Expansion is based on a large open pit and will increase output to an annual capacity of 19,000 t U3O8; 750,000 t copper; 800,000 ounces gold. The Four Mile in situ recovery project was approved in July 2009. An ion exchange facility is to be constructed at Four Mile and uranium-bearing resins will be transported to the Beverley plant to recover the uranium. Recent developments at Ranger mine, and Honeymoon, Oban and Yeelirrie projects are discussed.

Mechanical cells are the dominant unit operation in base metal rougher flotation applications worldwide. As economic demand for metals increase, and as the feasible ore grades decrease, the installed capacity of mechanical flotation units worldwide has greatly increased, adding significant capital and operating cost. One opportunity to improve this situation is to use fundamental knowledge to make the industrial flotation process more efficient. A key insight is that the flotation process can be optimized by dividing the processing of the pulp into two distinct fluidic environments; a collection cell where air and pulp mix in a highly energetic compartment, and a low energy gravity separation cell. This is the basis of the “2-stage flotation device” that has been patented by Eriez and marketed under the tradename StackCell™. Two industrial case studies will be presented to highlight the potential metallurgical and commercial advantages of the StackCell. In the first, a train consisting of three pilot scale StackCells (each 0.6 metre diameter) was run in parallel with a train of conventional mechanical cells in a major copper concentrator and benchmarked against a batch Denver test. In the second, the performance of a 3 metre diameter StackCell in a nickel sulfide cleaning application was benchmarked against a batch Denver test. The flotation kinetics observed in the StackCells were 2.4 to 2.9 times faster when compared with the lab Denver test. In the first case study, the kinetics of the StackCell was about six times faster than conventional mechanical cells. It is hypothesized that the efficiency improvement in kinetics is because of reduced “drop-back” during the froth recovery phase, which is reduced because of the reduction in the shear that is present in a conventional mechanical tank cell. This result suggests that a 2-stage flotation system can be used to reduce the working volume of flotation units by five to six times. This would allow operators to significantly reduce the size of their flotation lines for a comparable flotation objective. Some discussion will follow about the scale-up criteria, maintenance and operability issues, comparisons of layout, and possible cost savings. INTRODUCTION The solution that most equipment suppliers have offered to reduce the cost of mechanical flotation equipment over the last 30 years has been to increase the size of the flotation unit cell (Mankosa, 2017). For example, three 100 m3 machines with three smaller motors, mechanisms and control valves could be replaced with a geometrically similar 300 m3 with a larger version of each ancillary component. While there are some efficiencies and cost improvements to be gained by this approach, it does not take advantage of fundamental insights into the flotation process, and it does not represent a step-change in terms of process design or economic benefit for the customer. The advantage of the “bigger is better” approach is that there is past experience of incremental improvements by making cells larger and there is a well-established scale-up method, which allows practitioners to estimate equipment capital costs based on very simple laboratory test- work. A different paradigm, which is gaining interest rapidly is to use a unit operation in which it is easier to optimize the flotation process, which will be described in this paper. This approach is often referred to “2- stage flotation”. Because this approach is new, it is important to benchmark it against existing conventional technology and to demonstrate a robust methodology for sizing equipment and flowsheets. This paper aims to address these issues with two case studies.

"Answers to some of the problems ofRecovery and Metallurgical AccountingIn Gold and Silver Hydrometallurgical PlantsThe start-up over the last few years of new hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver has brought to the surface again a number of problems. Most of the problems have existed for some time and they manifest themselves mainly in two ways. Firstly, the plant results do not agree with the Metallurgical Test work figures and secondly, the Metallurgical Accounting figures do not balance.The plant results not agreeing with testwork figures are mainly due to:a) The testwork samples were not representative of the eventual plantfeed;b) Misinterpretation or misunderstanding of testwork;c) Plant losses;d) Plant design not allowing testwork results to be achieved;e) Operating deficiencies.a} The testwork samples being dissimilar to the plant feed occurs on a very high proportion of projects. The effects of this can beccr.ie exaggerated because the upper levels of the mining company often regard the original testwork figures as sacred and therefore base their judgement of current plant performance on these figures.Frequently the test work samples represent only a minor part of the orebody or alternatively a single composite of the whole ore body is used for the testwork long before it has been determined that all of the potentially different ore zones behave in the same manner. These errors can be compensated for by repeating the ""testwork tests 11 on current plant feed on a routine basis and using these tests to determine whether or not the plant is operating satisfactorily."

"An analysis of the number of industrial injuries shows that the mining sector is particularly affected, since mining is one of the most dangerous industrial activities in Canada. This has led to numerous inquiries, and supports the need for an in-depth study aiming at the identification of factors responsible for these accidents. One possible factor often pointed at is the small crews incentives and this paper presents a scientific approach applied to check a potential link between bonus and accidents at two mining companies located in northwestern Quebec.The data required to do so were the accidents, the salaries and the number of hours worked at each mining site by the hourly paid personnel for the period from June 1979 to January 1982. The analysis of the results derived from the initial information shows different behaviours of the frequency rate vs the bonus rate at these mines. The number of days lost per accident is independent of the bonus rate at both mine sites, as shown by Khisquare tests on contingency tables.IntroductionA wide variety of opinions has been pinpointed by a survey of the literature related to individual or small crew incentives and industrial accidents in sectors of activity where it applies. In addition, various formulae of mining contracts take place in the industry on one part, and statistics from this sector indicate a high accident frequency rate on the other part. These fact s have lead to this scientific investigation which does isolate the direct impact of the bonus on workers&apos; accidents. This study was undertaken with the full support of the Quebec Metal Mining Association.The conclusions of this preliminary phase of the researchproject are presented for two mining complexes in northwestern Quebec. The procedure is somewhat similar to the approach of the Belmoral Commission, with the underlying assumption that bonus has a direct impact on accidents."

Donald Cranstone holds B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. degrees in Geology from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in Economic Geology from Harvard University. He has worked as a mine geologist, a provincial geological survey geologist and as a senior exploration geologist. He joined what is now the Minerals and Metals Sector of Natural Resources Canada in 1971, where he has been a commodity specialist for gold, for copper and another 28 metals. He is a senior mineral economist, currently engaged in analysis of mineral exploration and discovery success in Canada and of the future of the Canadian mining industry. Abstract This paper examines the history of Canadian non-petroleum mineral production. The outlook over the next 25 years, for mining in Canada and in each province and territory, is reviewed. The outlook for mining in Canada and in most provinces/territories is favourable, but problems seem likely in a few jurisdictions unless new orebodies are brought into production. In terms of exploration potential, Canada consistently ranks among the top three countries in the world. Over the last eight years, Canada has consistently been second only to Australia as a destination for exploration investment. For the first time, Canada is ranked in terms of total mineral production, including coal and construction materials, relative to all the countries of the world including countries of the former communist bloc.

The 20th Century saw changes in the mining and metallurgical industry not only technically but also in social and environmental expectations. As projects continue to become larger to maintain competitiveness the visibility of their potential impacts raise concerns among many groups. The need for transparency, openness and early engagement of all parties are fundamental to assure success. An equally important task is to anticipate the standards that will be required to meet society?s expectations in the 21st Century. Historical Observations The mining industry of the 18 and 19th Century was dominated by opportunistic Companies and individuals with an entrepreneurial flair for adventure and risk. Those who promoted had the chance of great reward, while those willing to risk their life were assured a short one for their efforts because of the physical and health dangers that abounded. Disregarding conditions miners rewards were high even in those days, with an average Cornish miner known to be earning two pound a month in 1800. Coal and iron ore mines were driven by the needs of the industrial revolution and were the first to embark on larger scale output. Base metal mines were smaller as industrial demands for their use did not start to expand greatly till the late 19th Century. Electrification, the automobile and the 1st World War drove the increased demand for a variety of metals. Early mines were foul smelling and dusty and what was taken from below ground left spoil piles around the surface countryside after recovery of the coal or concentrate. The image of barren blackened hills is one that is easily conjured up and is an environmental legacy that still lives with us today.

Recently, the effects of global climate changes have become top concerns for governments? decision making regarding infrastructure investments. Extreme weather events that exceed the capacity of existing systems have considerably increased in frequency, and the potential effects of changing trends in temperature and rainfall on infrastructure are difficult to ignore. It is essential for governments to estimate the costs and benefits of adaptation to climate change to properly assess the financial feasibility of infrastructure adaptation strategies. This paper proposes a framework for estimating the economic aspects of infrastructure adaptation to climate change. The framework is composed of three steps of implementation: establishment of alternatives for infrastructure adaptation, performance prediction of infrastructure using future climate scenarios, and asset valuation based on costs and benefits. The first step specifies target assets, their adaptability to climate change, and applicable adaptation technologies. The second step evaluates the effects of climate change on the performance of infrastructure. The last step determines the optimal adaptation strategies among various alternatives based on their net benefits. The framework reasonably incorporates future climate scenarios into the estimation processes for climate change effects and provides a basis for budget allocation for governmental infrastructure investments. The framework is expected to assist government decision makers in establishing adaptation strategies in a rational manner under uncertain future climate change.

"The technology known as Expert Systems is being used within the minerals industry in a wide variety of problem areas. Applications include diagnosis, prediction, training, monitoring and control. Expert Systems provide a way to program computers to imitate human thinking. The construction of such systems is a straight-forward task that can be quickly learned by novices but can require a lifetime to master.To assist in the understanding and utility of this technology, a special manual bas been prepared which operates on a microcomputer under the MS-Windows environment. The manual covers all aspects of Artificial Intelligence of relevance to Expert Systems. A hypertext system allows users to probe as d•~ply as needed to achieve understanding or to simply skim the surface of the knowledge to obtain a quick overview of subjects. The manual was developed under the sponsorship of the Mineral Sciences Laboratory of CANMET and is available from the Mining and Mineral Process Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia. Annual updates are planned to keep abreast of new developments in this rapidly changing technology. RESUMELa technologie: des Systèmes Experts est utilisée par l'industrie minière pour résoudre une grande variété de problèmes. Les domaines d'application comprennent le diagnostic, la prédiction, la formation, la surveillance et le contrôle des procèdes. Les Systèmes Experts permettent d'écrire des programmes d'ordinateur qui imitent le processus de la pensée humaine. "In the present work, we developed a Smart Process Control Toolkit (SProC) as a single simulation environment for the modelling of materials microstructure and its interaction with the local microchemistry during manufacturing of semi-finished products. This toolkit supports the data communication between sub-sequent processing steps such as casting, homogenization, pre-heating to deformation, etc. The thermo-kinetical simulation software MatCalc of MatCalc Engineering© GmbH was used for modelling of precipitation kinetics, such as formation of primary and secondary phases and their evolution. An import/export functionality of the precipitation distribution after each processing step was implemented to follow the parameter history. For the evolution of the local microstructure, a Mean Dislocation Density based Model (MD2M) was used. This model consists of two parts: (1) Flow Stress Model for calculation of the total strength during the deformation and (2) Static Recrystallization Model for account of the recrystallization and grain growth after the deformation. Validation was done by a comparison of experimental and simulated hot compression tests of a conventional AA2024 alloy.INTRODUCTION Optimization of a semi-finished products quality, elimination of typical production issues and cost savings are of a great demand for supply industries. However, it is currently not feasible to investigate the whole manufacturing process in detail at an industrial level. Concerning the processing parameters, one must understand the correlation mechanisms between macroscopic properties and microscopic material behavior. Numerical simulations, which could reproduce the real processing conditions on the one hand, and employ a physically based modelling on the other, are thus attracting a lot of attention and their power is no longer under the question. It is well known that e.g. the total strength of the material depends directly on distribution of precipitation particles and mean grain size. In order to follow their evolution during the manufacturing process beginning from casting to the final semi-finished product, and thus be able to control the process, one should use the techniques which would at the same time reproduce experimental processing conditions of real size objects (e.g. sheet, extrusions, etc.) and account for the evolution of a local microstructure and its interaction with the microchemistry. A commonly used approach is to implement a model which would describe the evolution of microstructure based on a dislocation density approach into a user defined material subroutine of some finite element solver. There is, however, also an influence of the manufacturing process by e.g. the evolution of a local microchemistry (formation, transformation and dissolution of the precipitation particles) on the microstructure and thus the macroscopic material behavior. Thus, a method is needed to follow the variable history through the simulation of the whole production chain."

“O-SR process” in which the S-Furnace of the Mitsubishi process is followed by existing reverberatory furnaces (RFs) and Peirce Smith (PS) converters has been operated since December 2007. The S-Furnace smelts copper concentrates to produce molten matte containing 58-62%Cu which is then settled in the RFs and converted to blister copper in the PS converters. The SO2 gas generated from the S-Furnace and PS converters is converted to sulfuric acid in the acid plants. In addition to the smelting copper concentrates, the O-SR process has advantages in terms of recycling various waste/secondary materials. Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR) has been treated in the RF to reduce fossil-fuel consumption in RFs, and to recover various metals included in ASR as well, since 1993. Electronic circuit boards (E-scrap) has also been processed in order to recover not only copper but also rare resources such as gold, silver and PGMs since 2013. Strategic modifications have enabled expansion of the processing volume of E-scrap. Enhancing recycling of wastes and scraps from urban mines while reducing the consumption of natural resources in the “O-SR” process will be demonstrated and discussed in the present paper. INTRODUCTION Onahama smelter and refinery has been operating as a custom smelter since 1965. Smelting facilities were subsequently expanded to two green-charged RF furnaces and five PS converters in 1973. Since RF is a conventional old-fashioned smelting furnace that necessarily consumes a huge amount of fuel to smelt copper concentrates, saving fuel cost has been an important objective. In early 1980’s the fuel was changed from bunker oil to pulverized coal, while utilizing the combustion heat of waste tires. Furthermore, treatment of combustible waste such as shredder residue (SR) was initiated in order to save fossil fuel for smelting concentrates in the RFs. Since enhancing of the treatment of SR requires a reduction in concentrate smelted in the RFs, most concentrates were dried and injected through tuyeres into the PS.converters. These modifications enabled to reduce the amount of the pulverized coal combustion and to increase SR treatment in the RFs. SR treatment capacity has increased to 12,000mt/month because the SR market has grown after the enforcement of the Vehicles Recycling Law. Such business environment has been attributed to establish the thermal-materials recycling system of SR in which the RFs have changed their role from copper concentrates smelting furnaces to waste materials combustion furnaces.

Dynatec Corporation is an integrated mining services company, providing mine development, operations management, engineering, drilling and metallurgical services to the North American mining industry. Dynatec was the contract operator of the Ken Snyder Mine in Midas, Nevada from start of production in January 1999 to September 2001. This paper summarizes Dynatec?s experience and approach to the use of longhole stoping methods for mining to widths of 1.3 to 2 metres in a steeply dipping narrow vein orebody.

The measurement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from primary aluminium production and inventory of these emissions of carbon dioxide and PF Cs have become an important issue for primary aluminium producers. Most global producers have either voluntary emission goals or emissions limits established through national regulatory requirements. International good practices for inventory of these emissions for national governments are established through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The current good practices, last updated in 2000, are being revised and are expected to be adopted by governments in the spring of 2006. There are a number of changes expected in the guidance that will impact how facilities account for their GHG emissions. This paper describes the changes to the guidance and the implications of these changes for aluminium producers.

Recently, there is growing trend to build the high-rise and install curtain walls. Following this trend, we developed robot for building wall cleaning work, which moves along Built-in guide rail of building. Because it moves attached at building wall for cleaning work, it can be seriously affected by potential threats, like earthquake, strong wind, malfunction, and construction error of built-in guide rail. In order to cope with those threats actively, this paper presents the Fail-Safety system. The building wall cleaning robot consists of two moving system: The Horizontal Moving System which mainly do maintenance work, and The Vertical Climbing System which transport the horizontal moving system floor by floor. We apply the Fail-Safety system to these systems. The Fail-Safety system consists of sensors to detect external situation, and, with information of sensors, give instruction for what to do. This robot system is installed with four kinds of sensors: shock sensor, infrared ray sensor, laser sensor, magnetic sensor. First, shock sensor detects external shock during cleaning work. When shock sensor detects big shock, the robot returns to starting point to inspect how damaged it is. Second, infrared ray sensor detects damage of built-in guide rail. It is to prevent destruction of robot caused by moving along damaged rail. Third, laser sensor gives notice about where obstacle is. It is for robot to avoid crash with obstacle and decrease damage. Fourth, magnetic sensor detects magnetic points, which are installed in rail at regular intervals, and helps robot to find its position, based on location of magnetic points detected. If robot is damaged by external shock and its encoder, which gives information of location to it, is not working, magnetic sensor will give information of robot?s location to robot. And then, robot regulates its velocity depending on position of it, and safely returns to starting point. The Fail-Safety system in this paper is for building wall cleaning robot to sense external threats, and prevent getting worse. Applied to this active protection system, making safe environment of maintenance work is possible for robot system.

"Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential for many applications in electronics, energy harvesting, and defense. The common resources for economic extraction of REEs are oxides such as bastnaesite and monazite, which are scarcely available in the earth’s crust. On the other hand, REEs are available in many clay and phosphate ores where REEs substitute Ca or Si in the mineral lattices or as physically adsorbed cations at negatively charged sites on the clay surface. While REE oxides readily dissolve in acid, making the chemical leaching of REEs an economically viable option, adopting a similar approach for leaching of silicates and phosphate ores is unfeasible because of significantly low REEs content in these ore deposits. Bio-leaching approaches are environmentally benign and economically viable. We investigated the bio-leaching (Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans (Af) and the fungal Aspergillus niger (An)) of REEs from a phosphate ore, and examined the factors governing the leaching processes. Based on the shake flask leaching studies, an increase in surface area combined with an increase in pulp density (1-15 wt. %) was found to lead to an increase in the amount of REEs leached. In contrast, an increase in the surface area by reducing the particle size from 75 to 35 led to a decrease in the amount of REEs leached. These differing attributes are proposed to be due to the poor bacterial growth/activity with high F- ions in the leaching media, F- released from the edge-sites of the smaller particles. On the other hand, several advantages that associate with the Af bacterial bio-leaching processes relate to the media composition (Mg2+ and (NH4)+) and phenomena occurring at the electrical double layers of the mineral and bacterial- water interfaces. These studies suggested that leaching of particles occur in a layer-by-layer manner.INTRODUCTIONRare Earth Elements (REEs) are essential for many important applications, such as in electronics, energy generation, and defense. The common resources for economic extraction of REEs are typically carbonates such as bastnaesite and monazite, which are scarcely available in the earth’s crust (Y. Kanazawa and M. Kamitani, 2006). REEs are abundantly available in many clay and phosphate ores where REEs substitute Ca or Si of the mineral lattices. Conventional acid leaching of REEs from oxides is not economically feasible for clay and phosphate ores because of significantly low REE content (parts per billion) in these ores (Tian, J., Chi, R., Yin, J., 2010a; Moldoveanu G. A. and Papangelakis V. G., 2013; WK Goyne, LS Brantley and J Chorover, 2010). In some cases, REEs could be extracted from these ores via chemical leaching routes as they constitute reasonable amounts of REEs (0.1 - 1% REEs). A major challenge faced in general in chemical leaching processes (Chi, R., 1988) is the loss of REEs in the phosphate/gypsum precipitates/crystals, which are overcome in a step-by-step manner by sequentially removing impurities such as fluorine and calcium, including steps carried out at elevated temperatures. On the other hand, bio-leaching approaches provide environmentally benign and economical alternatives. Acidophilic bacteria are currently being used for industrial scale bio-leaching of Au/Cu/Ni from low grade ores. Studies on bioleaching of REEs from red mud (Al2O3) using Penicillium tricolor and Aspergilus niger (An), and, of bio-leaching (lab-scale) of phosphate rocks using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (Af) have been reported (Boon, M., Heijnen, J.J., 1993; Qu, Y. and Lian, B., 2013). We conducted bacterial (Af) bio-leaching of REEs from a phosphate ore in shake flasks and columns, while examining the key factors that govern leaching kinetics."

Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) has started an exploration program for Seafloor Massive Sulfides (SMS) in the EEZ of Japan, and launched an investigation program for mining, processing and environmental impact on SMS development. With regard to the mining aspect, the mining system consists of three units: a mining unit on the sea floor, an ore lift-up unit to surface, and a mining support vessel unit which has an ore unloading system that unloads onto a shuttle ship. Regarding the mining unit, JOGMEC and certain Japanese mining and machinery companies developed two types of state of the art mining testing tools. Excavation tests on the actual SMS site in the Okinawa Trough, south-west of Japan, were conducted in 2012. In these tests, the functions of the testing tools, such as cutting ore, moving on the seafloor and climbing up slopes having steeper than a 25 degree gradient, were confirmed. The physical characteristics of the ore, which are key parameters for establishing a mining system, are yet to be fully understood as the exploration program has been undertaken simultaneously. Hence, those examinations have been carried out by ground cutting experiments, analysis of drilling core data, and the like. This paper describes the outline of a proposed mining system, mining testing tools and results of the on-site mining testing.

An efficient and accurate three-dimensional (3-D) contact detection algorithm is of vital importance in large-scale computing of discontinuous deformation analysis. The contact detection algorithm takes up a large proportion of the whole calculation time because of the increasing calculation number in three-dimensional case. For block systems which consist of convex polyhedrons, the efficiency and accuracy of the contact detection algorithm is a great challenge. The presented contact detection algorithm in discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) method is carried out in three phases: the global neighbour searching, the local contact type searching and the contact transferring. A contact detection algorithm for 3-D DDA is presented with some improvements on the three phases. A grid-based global neighbour searching algorithm is used to eliminate unnecessary neighbour blocks to the exact number. The local contact type searching includes two steps. In the first step, the common plane method is used to determine the contact type between convex polyhedrons. In the second step, the contact pairs detected by the common plane method are divided into four basic types. In the third phase, the four contact types are transferred into two basic contact types, vertex-to-face contact type and edge-to-edge contact type, which are managed in a uniform procedure. Three verification examples are calculated, the results show that the proposed algorithm based on the three contact detection phases is robust and efficient.

Unknown goafs and roadways of abandoned coalmines can be a great water inrush hazard for coalmine workers. Consequently, advance detection of such hazards is of great importance. By detonating seismic charges in underground coal seams, we can collect seismic data using a surface survey line, which is located across the ground projection of the underground shot point. This experiment was conducted in a coalmine in Shaanxi Province, China. After surface elevation compensation and travel time adjustments, we accurately determined the position of the goaf boundary along the survey line based on the wave velocity anomaly on the seismic record. Then we used a scattered wave imaging technique to enhance the energy of the scattered waves that are generated when the coal seam roof slide wave (refracted wave when the incident angle bigger than the critical angle) hits the roadway, thus confirming location of a geological discontinuity (roadway). This experiment shows that the coalmine ground seismic method, employing an underground explosive charge and a surface seismic array, has the ability to detect an abandoned roadway and goaf in advance of coal mining, thus can improve worker safety.

"Mineral deposits and prospects of the Pan African Saldanian orogenic belt in the southwestern Cape Province South Africa, are reviewed. Despite the entire absence of operating base or precious metal mines in the area, this study has established at least four metal associations that offer enticing exploration potential.The poly-phase deformed, low-grade metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary Malmesbury Group constitutes a complex, poorly understood supracrustal sequence that has been loosely subdivided into the Tygerberg, Swartland and Boland tectono-stratigraphic terranes by northwesterly trending fault zones. Syn- and post-tectonic granitoids of the Cape Granite Suite selectively intruded these terranes. Early S-types preferred the Tygerberg terrane whereas the later I-types dominate the remaining areas. Anorogenic A-type granites, however, occur in all three domains. Known metallization is directly or indirectly related to the intrusives, yet syngenetic deposits are conspicuously absent from the supracrustals. Four metal associations have been identified.• Cassiterite-wolframite (± Au, Cu, Mo, Fe-sulfides) in quartz and quartz/aplite veins hosted by tourmalinized and locally greissenized S-type granite. Similar exo-granitic veins occur in proximal metamorphites.• Juxtaposed disseminated, stockwork, breccia and vein style Cu-Mo-Fe-(Au)-sulfide mineralization hosted by mafic to intermediate intrusives of high K calc-alkaline, I-type affinity. • Cu-Mo-Au-sulfides hosted by hydraulic breccia pipes, stocks and veins occurring in anorogenic A-type alkali feldspar granites and amphibole quartz syenites.• Scheelite with minor Cu-Mo-sulfides and Au-associated with endo- and exo-skarns spatially related to I-type monzogranite, granite and alkali feldspar granite.The first three associations occur along the Yzerfontein-Helderberg-Zone, a 180 km lineament in the Tygerberg terrane, a zone exploited by syn-, late- and post-tectonic intrusives and their related mineralization. The fourth association is typical of the Boland terrane. The spatial and temporal relationships between the various metal associations is interpreted as the result of sequential intrusion of relative early high level S-type, followed by intermediate level I-type and finally anorogenic A-type granitoids during the evolution of a contracting continental margin arc and its irmer arc. This plate tectonic setting suggests subduction in an easterly direction underneath the Kalahari craton. The spatial configuration of the various terranes at the present erosional levels is the result of rifting and significant differential vertical displacement following cessation of subduction, a terminal tectonic event possibly synchronous with intrusion of the A-type granitoids.Near surface preserved roof zones and cupolas of both S- and I-type granitoids in the Tygerberg and Boland terranes, respectively, render these areas extremely prospective for Sn, W, Mo and Au mineralization. The presence of intermediate to mafic volcanics, a diversity of calcareous lithotypes and favorable plate tectonic setting of the Malmesbury Group suggest potential for the thus far elusive VMS, MVT and Sedex base metal and minor precious metal deposits."

Process control, mine-to-mill optimization, and other mining operations depend on having robust, comprehensive mineralogical and chemical characterization. However, current characterization methods rely primarily on analyzing samples from trenches, channels, blast holes, and drill holes and interpolating between them, and are not always sensitive to some minerals (such as clays) that cause major problems for mining and mineral processing. Continuous characterization is possible with techniques such as hyperspectral remote sensing, which measures reflectance or absorption of light in the visible to near infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Absorption and reflectance features are characteristic of different chemical bond types, so each spectrum corresponds to a different mineral or material. In remote sensing, each pixel in the scanned area has both a location and a spectrum. This makes hyperspectral remote sensing potentially useful for characterizing mine site materials. In this study, we tested a hyperspectral remote sensing system as a method of characterizing the mineralogy and material types at mine and metallurgical sites. Our test site was a small open-pit copper mine and leach operation in the southwestern U.S. We scanned mine highwalls, dump piles, leach pads, and nearby rock outcrops with drone- and tripod-mounted VNIR-SWIR spectrometers. We collected ground-truth data through geologic mapping, sampling, and spot analyses with a portable short-wave SWIR instrument. The results show that the hyperspectral remote sensing system that we tested is capable of distinguishing the types and distribution of spectrally active minerals and other materials in diverse mining settings, including showing wet and dry areas of leach pads; clay and carbonate type and distribution on mine highwalls, leach pads, dumps, and rock outcrops; plant type and distribution; fault zones, bedding planes, and other geological features; and qualitative spectral matches between dump piles and areas of the mine highwalls. Hyperspectral sensing proved particularly sensitive to the presence and type of clay and carbonate minerals, which cause geotechnical and metallurgical problems such as highwall failure, gangue acid consumption, and flotation sliming. Examples will be presented and discussed at the conference. Areas of continuing research include automating and streamlining the data reduction process, integrating hyperspectral data with block modeling and mine planning software, and testing the results of hyperspectral sensing in different geological environments.
