In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. Barcelona Metro Line 9 (Line 9) is an essential infrastructure, improving the transversal transport in Barcelona by connecting the greater part of the currently existing radial lines. The purpose of Line 9 is to create a peripheral line surrounding the city of 1.6 million people (metropolitan area exceeds five million), and includes 52 stations, of which a total of 32 are deep shafts and 19 transfer stations in a densely populated area with several geographical constraints.The tunnel has an inner diameter of 10.90 m, bored with an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in soil sections with precast concrete lining type universal ring and segments 40 cm thick.A single tunnel solution was adopted, driven by functionality and costs savings. The internal tunnel section is divided into two levels to allow for one way rail transit including the platforms in each station on each level in order to optimise the space created by the TBM excavation and comply with the operational needs. An extensive suite of elements are routinely assayed on all resource drill core samples to assist in deposit scale resource definition, local mine scale delineation of ore zones, and ore characterisation for the planning and scheduling of mining and processing of ores at Olympic Dam. This paper discusses a deposit scale geochemical relation that can be used by mine geologists to find more high-grade ore at the local mine area scale at Olympic Dam.A 3D grade shell representing 0.8 per cent Cu was created for a mine area using drill hole assay data. This defined the geometry of the ore zone. The Cu-grade shell was then overlain onto the existing resource block model to evaluate the relationships between the Cu-grade shell, copper and other elements. The strongest correlation was between copper and manganese. The block model showed a dramatic decrease in the concentration of manganese just below the below the Cu-grade shell.Several drill holes that intersected the Cu-grade shell were selected to evaluate the copper manganese relation at the drill hole scale. As expected, the individual drill holes displayed a strong inverse relation between copper and manganese. A geochemical footwall was then modelled representing 0.1 wt per cent Mn. Using both the Cu– and Mn-grade shells, several drill holes were designed/drilled and all hit high-grade copper.For the vast majority of the deposit the inverse relation between copper and manganese is valid; however, in areas with intense chlorite alteration (related to amounts of mafic to ultramafic rocks) this relation is not as strong, due to increased manganese in the rock mass. Even though using the copper manganese relation as a drill targeting method was not always as reliable in a few small areas of the deposit, it demonstrates the value of using existing assay data integrated with the resource block model to discover local mine scale geochemical relationships which can be used to more effectively design drill holes to discover high-grade ore at Olympic Dam.CITATION:Griffith, J and Ehrig, K, 2017. Twin-roll continuous casting technology is rapidly approaching commercialisation. Fundamentally different than conventional continuous casting, heat transfer and hence solidification during twin-roll casting are governed by the interfacial melt/mould thermal resistance, as opposed to the resistance of the solidifying shell. Under these conditions the interface resistance is predominantly controlled by the melt/substrate wetting behaviour. The very early stages of melt/mould contact are characterised by highly transient heat transfer conditions. The overall melt cooling rates prior to the formation of the first solid are reported to be in the range of 1000 - 50000 K/s with melt undercoolings of up to 300 K. At the points of intimate melt/mould contact the thermal resistance is approaching zero, where cooling rates and undercooling much larger than those reported in the literature are probably occurring. Improved wetting will reduce the energy barrier for nucleation while at the same time increasing the cooling rate of the liquid. Since the overall nucleation rate is controlled both by the rate of cluster formation and the rate of atom transfer to the nucleus, a critical cooling rate will exist above which the nucleation rate is expected to be reduced. Under these conditions, it is possible that the first solid phase to form is a metastable glass which subsequently transforms into a crystalline phase. The implications on nucleation and early growth are also discussed.

Western New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted continuation of eastern Australia. Detailed studies of units previously considered to have trans-Tasman correlations are being undertaken within the FRST Programme Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ to test specific connections, and thus add to the exploration framework of NZ. Correlation of two major episodes of granitic magmatism are currently being investigated. These represent the oldest (mid Paleozoic) and youngest (Early Cretaceous) magmatic events that conjoined Australia and New Zealand are believed to have in common.

The Peko copper orebody is associated with a body of magnetite rock which it has partly replaced. The primary ore averages about 9 per cent. copper and 4 dwt. gold per ton and locally IS much richer. It consists essentially of chalcopyrite and unreplaced magnetite, with lesser amounts of pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, cobaltite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and native gold. The earliest formed mineral is wolfram, and the latest formed is goethite, so that the temperature of deposition ranged from about 5000 C. to 1650 C. or lower.Oxidation extends to 270 ft., which is 100 ft. below the present water level. The oxidized ore consists of cuprite and native copper, and has replaced more or less massive chalcocite of a former zone of secondary sulphide enrichment. The present zone of secondary sulphide enrichment extends from about 270 ft. to 310 ft. depth.INTRODUCTIONThe Peko mine is about 6 miles south-west of Tennant Creek township in the Northern Territory, adjacent to a small outcrop of hematite rock that projects above an otherwise featureless "bull-dust" fiat.The copper-gold orebody being developed in this mine did not outcrop. It was first detected in 1950 by a surface diamond-drill hole (DDH.1), which intersected primary copper ore at a depth of 400 to 425 ft. This ore contained from 4 to 11 per cent. copper and 1 to 25 dwt. gold per ton. Since then a shaft has been sunk, and crosscuts and development drives have been opened on the 210..ft., 300-ft. and 400-ft. levels, which are also connected by winzes. Two diamond drill holes sunk from the 400-ft. level have intersected theorebody at about 450 to 460 ft., and a winze from the 400-ft. level intersected the lode from 445 to 500 ft. At this point it is 54 ft. wide, and averages 9 per cent. copper. More recently an inclined surface drill hole (Peko No. 1) has cut the lode at 856 ft. to 921 ft., equivalent to a vertical depth...

The interaction of, flotation collectors with sulphide mmerals takes place at the solid-solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulphides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidized to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen.The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidized xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulphides is discussed briefly.

A single compartment 100 A electrolytic cell charged with AICla-KCl-NaCl at 750°C was studied during an experimental campaign of 4 months. About 10 1b of aluminium were produced in continuous runs which lasted up to 1 week. The highest cathode current efficiency determined was 80 per cent. Anode current efficiency. cathode potential, analyses of melt, sublimate, and product, and reactivity of cell materials were also recorded and interpreted in terms of the role of lower valent aluminium species in the electrolysis mechanism.

The Nena high sulphidation-type copper-gold deposit is composed of andesitic pyroclastic units with minor interstratified lava flows. Epiclastic sandstone and conglomerate, and siliciclastic rocks consisting of mudstone, shale, lithic and bioclastic sandstone and conglomerate are locally present. Pre-mineral diorite intruded and domed the volcano-siliciclastic sequence. Economic copper-gold is hosted by vuggy quartz altered lapilli tuff and tuff breccia. The early hydrothermal alteration stage involved deposition of epithermal banded quartz and chalcedonic silica in localised environments. This alteration stage was locally superimposed by a hydrothermal breccia event. Following the breccia event, magmatically-derived volatiles were channelled through a NW striking dilational fault zone and generated the high sulphidation alteration. The high sulphidation alteration is zoned from a vuggy quartz core with local massive replacement silica through a broad pyritic quartz-alunite halo and finally to a thin illite-smectite zone. This is surrounded by regional chlorite-epidote-smectite alteration. A gangue mineral phase consisting of quartz, alunite and baryte overprinted the zoned high sulphidation alteration and preceded the main copper-gold-arsenic mineralisation. Early sulphide deposition is characterised by marcasite, arsenical pyrite and melnicovenite. Main-stage copper-gold mineralisation involved sequential deposition of hypogene bladed covellite+chalcocite, enargite-luzonite and luzonite+stibioluzonite respectively. The copper sulphides are zoned from bladed covellite-chalcocite in the north (cross-sections 5000 - 5600 N) through enargite-luzonite (cross-sections 4700 - 5000 N) and to luzonite????stibioluzonite in the south (cross-sections 4400 - 4700 N). A late phase of minor acicular covellite and enargite+luzonite overprinted the zoned copper sulphides and associated gold mineralisation. Gold mineralisation commenced at the transition from enargite to luzonite, and continued through the deposition of luzonite-stibioluzonite in both stages. Most gold was deposited during the main-stage mineralisation. Yellow native sulphur was deposited in the remaining vugs and defines the waning stage of the hydrothermal system. Post-mineral dioritic intrusives and feldspar porphyries intruded the volcano-siliciclastic sequence. Finally, supergene chemical processes with associated erosion and uplift generated a 40 - 50 m thick oxide-hosted gold cap. The oxide gold cap is underlain by a 35 - 45 m thick blanket of supergene chalcocite+covellite mineralisation which overlies and occurs throughout the main hypogene copper-gold zone. Supergene gold is related to the distribution of primary gold-bearing sulphides. Therefore, remobilisation and redeposition of gold are considered to be insignificant and very localised.

The area between Merrygoen and Digilah is located on a structural high that separates the Sydney Basin from the Great Artesian Basin, and hence the stratigraphic succession of younger rocks overlying the basement is relatively thin. The stratigraphy is briefly described and it is shown that fluvial sedimentation prevailed from Upper Permian through to Middle Jurassic times. Flint clays occur in the Permian, Triassic and Jurassic but only those in the Jurassic appear to have commercial value at present. The chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of the flint clays are discussed.

Circulating Air Classification of Manufactured Sand Due to environmental concerns, the supply and use of natural gravel has been limited by the Swedish government. The Swedish concrete industry is therefore examining manufactured sand as an alternative that has equal or better product quality, and which the Swedish quarry industry already has the ability to deliver. However, in order to comply with the specifications set by the concrete industry, a better means of classification is needed, as the proportion of fine particles (filler) smaller than 63 - 125 ¦m in size must be reduced. One classification technology that meets the requirements may be air classification. This paper examines the process of circulating air classification, which is not yet commonly used in the Swedish quarry industry; suggesting that a better understanding of the process is needed. The circulating air classifier in this study has two internal machine parameters that can affect the separation point; namely, the speeds of the circulating fan and the separator fan. We study their effect on the separation point as well as the interaction between these parameters. Full-scale parameter tests are also conducted, in which size distribution is measured before and after the circulating air classification. This study shows how the different parameters affect the separation point and that it is possible to produce manufactured sand according to specifications. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD, Fluent) is used to study the internal flow of the air circulating within the classifier. A single-phase study of the flow field is conducted to support and explain the findings from the full-scale tests.

McConnell Dowell is pleased to be given the opportunity to present two papers to this conference. The first is a general discussion paper on our work in the field of slurry transportation. The second will be a technical paper on the development of a welded coupling compatible with urethane lined pipework. We trust that by discussing our recent work we can leave two lasting impressions on you: the versatility and useful role of slurry transportation, and the leading role taken by New Zealand in this technology This paper discusses three recent projects the New Zealand Steel Ironsand Transfer Line the Coarse Coal Ship Loading Technology the Nerang River Sand By-pass System. These have followed on from the other slurry projects with which McConnell Dowell has been associated such as the ironsand export trade at Waipipi and Taharoa. The New Zealand Contractors Federation awarded the Construction Award for 1986 to McConnell Dowell for the Ironsand Slurry Pipeline.

The Northland region of New Zealand has a complex geological history which has long been the subject of considerable controversy. Small mineral deposits have been discovered in the past, and some have been mined. Except for aggregates and very high quality china clay, mining is virtually nonexistent at present. Mercury mining is proposed from small deposits in the Kaeo area. Intensive exploration for epithermal precious metals deposits in the past seven years, combined with some recent geological mapping undertaken by the Geological Survey and University thesis students has added greatly to an understanding of Northland's geology. Mapping of the Whangaroa-Kaikohe map sheet at a scale of 1:100 000 by Brown and Laurenson Limited has enabled new geological information to be collated for the first time since 1961, when the last geological map was published. The 'Northland Allochthon' is now observed to be a series of four or more thrust sheets each containing predictable formations. High angle faulting contemporaneous with overthrusting has modified the thrust sheets, and established a series of horsts and grabens. The Pirau Fault is considered to be a major earth fracture.

The corrosion of aluminosilicate refractories by soda from three different sources has been studied by microscopic methods. Sodium sulphate from oil ash, sodium chloride used in glazing structural clay products, and sodium borate from borax-impregnated wood ash have fundamentally the same effect on the refractories. The soda is the chief medium of reaction and fluxing, the sulphur, chlorine, and boron being volatized as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and boric acids.INTRODUCTIONBecause of their strong fluxing action, alkalis are one of the main causes of corrosion and slagging of refractories.The action of potash and soda on refractories follows somewhat similar lines, although it is common for one alkali to be greatly in excess of the other. The course of the reaction in a number of cases of alkali attack has been studied by microscopic and chemical methods. For example, the action of potash on blast furnace refractories was studied by Kraner (1942) and Rigby and Richardson (1947), who described the occurrence of various potassium aluminium silicates. Its action on cement kiln refractories was described by Brisbane, Segnit, and Weymouth (1957). The action of soda on glass tank refractories has been studied by many people, for example Bisby (1956) and Resch (1954). Recent literature is reviewed with emphasis on the design and scale up of mixers. Most important aspects of mixing have resulted from the study of Newtonian fluids and only a minor attempt has been made to extend the work to non-Newtonian materials.The rheology of non-Newtonian materials is outlined and the typical behaviour of mineral slurries is indicated.The importance of flow velocity, flow pattern, and fluid turbulence is discussed with relation to suspension of solids and rate of reaction.Data on experimental leaching of ore from Mary Kathleen, Queensland, show the effect of different mixing impellers.In conclusion, factors involved in the selection of a mixer are presented with emphasis on economic appraisal after pilot experimentation.INTRODUCTIONThe subject of mixing has attracted considerable attention during recent years, but relatively little work has been undertaken for the study of non-Newtonian materials. Most work has been restricted to Newtonian fluids because there are less inconsistencies in such study.Mixing, by definition, implies blending or combining, and ranges from gentle mixing which blends the contents of a large tank in 24 hours to violent mixing which completely homogenises the contents of a tank within seconds. Metzner and Otto (1957) have pointed out the present lack of knowledge on the degree (or quality) of mixing. Apart from this fact the design of mixers for Newtonian materials would seem to be reasonably certain.Both capital and operating costs rise rapidly with increasing mixer size. Therefore the design, or selection, of a mixer is a matter for economic consideration in the overall aspect of plant design and operation.

Grinding of iron ore is an essential step to utilise ore fines for pelletisation needed for DRI units. While preparing iron ore pellets for DRI production, the iron ore needs extensive grinding which is highly energy consuming step causing the process to become non-viable in some cases. In the present paper an attempt has been made to evaluate grinding performance of thermally treated ore compared to normal ore grinding. Such thermal pre-treatment has been found to reduce the energy requirement with lower consumption rate of grinding media. It has been observed that by applying thermal shock the ore is rendered weak with improved grindability. The stresses generated due to thermal treatment may extend existing micro-cracks in the ore and in some cases it may even nucleate fresh cracks. Experimental studies carried out on thermally treated hematitite ore reveals that the heating to 400¦C followed by water quenching can cause a reduction of 45 per cent in grinding energy. Real-Time Integration of Mining and Metallurgical Information for Efficient Use of Energy and Water

The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.

The pressure of low commodity prices forced the design process for the second lift of Northparkes E26 Mine to adopt a continuous improvement philosophy. The emphasis was to minimise capital expenditure while still maintaining the excellent low operating costs achieved on Lift 1. Although the first block cave lift at Northparkes is the most productive underground mine in the world and is held up as a benchmark for the use of technology in mining, areas for improvement were identified. Every area was critically assessed and investigated for the possible application of new techniques and technologies. Key learnings from the construction and production phases of Lift 1 were captured, documented and used as the starting point for the Lift 2 design. This paper shows how and why the design parameters initially used onLift 1 were changed to become the current E26 Lift 2 developmentproposal. The main differences between the two block caves arehighlighted.
