I am honoured, deeply honoured, that so distinguished a group has assembled to acknowledge the signifi- cance of the work of my Melbourne flotation research laboratory, to review progress since Principles of Flotation (Wark, 1938) was published, to highlight the present state of knowledge, and to point the way for future research. The flotation research which began in 1929 was sponsored by a group of mining companies2 at the instigation of Harry Hey of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited. There were never more than three of us work- ing in rather cramped conditions in a laboratory made available by the Department of Chemistry at the Uni- versity of Melbourne, but what we lacked in space was more than offset by a freedom unparalleled in indus- trial research in Australia at that time. I pay special tribute to my first colleague, Alwyn Cox; to my wife who worked with us for several years; and to Keith Sutherland who followed Cox in 1936. They were my sole colleagues up to 1938 when Principles of Flo- tation (Wark, 1938) was published.

Economic and environmental pressures are shifting the world balance of titanium dioxide production away from sulphate based. manufacture towards the more cost effective and cleaner chloride route. In the chloride process for titanium dioxide pigment manufacture, TiOz and other metal oxides in the feed ore are reacted at high temperature with chlorine in the presence of carbon. These gases are cooled after they leave the reaction zone, upon which solid contaminants precipitate and are substantially removed. The liquid titanium tetrachloride is purified by distillation before again being vaporised and interacting with hot oxygen to form pigmentary titanium dioxide and regenerate chlorine for recycle. The base pigment is wet milled, surface treated (by coating with hydrous oxides of silica, alumina and others) and redispersed before packaging. Optical properties of TiO2 pigments are reviewed and the role of refractive index and particle size explained in brief. Pigment related factors affecting the opacity, colour, undertone, gloss and durability of coatings are examined with respect to manufacturing requirements. The superior performance of chloride based pigments is briefly reviewed.

In recent years, significant improvements have been made in the design and operation of carbon-in-pulp plants. Some of the major developments in plant operation and technology are reviewed together with an outline of the research being undertaken in Western Australia. The main problems facing operators include the understanding and control of carbon fouling and regeneration, and the recovery of gold from the carbon. It is shown that carbon fouling by a variety of agents, particularly cyanide, calcium carbonate and silica, cause a significant loss of kinetic activity which in turn leads to poor plant performance. The importance of acid washing and adequate thermal reactivation is discussed. Although the Anglo elution procedure is commonly used in South Africa its use in Australia in preference to the conventional Zadra elution procedure is likely to be re- stricted because of its demand for high quality water. Solvent elution by the recently developed Micron procedure using refluxing methanol, ethanol or acetonitrile vapours is an attractive alternative. This elutes gold in 4-6 hours and provides concentrated gold solutions suitable for simplified gold recovery steps.

Lime is the common reagent used for pH control in cyanide gold circuits. Lime can be supplied as either quicklime (CaO) or 'hydrated lime(Ca(OH)2). Both are dry powders with variable flow properties. These properties demand special attention when designing machin- ery to handle them.

According to the analysis of 126 mine gushing records and the relevant water supply and hydrogeologic condition, the gush can be classified into eight types;cave type,collapse -column. type, subterranean stream type, fault zone type, contact zone type, upper plate type, bottom heaving type and surface water invasion type. Concepts of facies are of proven worth in sedimentology, but have hitherto received little attention from volcanologists. The time is now ripe to develop facies schemes for volcanic products. Oxidation or sulphidization of the surface of pyrrhotIte partIcles enhances atomic interdiffusion at elevated temperatures and provides a mechanism for interface growth between particles in contact. In a mass of pyrrhotite-rich ore or tailing, where oxidation heating is not controlled, bonding of particles by diffusional mass transport contributes significantly to the agglomeration of the mass.

During the past seven years silver recovery has been increased from 9 per cent to over 61 per cent. The changes in plant practiee which have led to this increase are described. Naturally, this trend raises a certain number of problems which grow proportionally with the size of the city. The use of the underground space has an important role to play in solving such urban problems. But various issues must be taken into account when developing urban underground space.
