The economically significant seams in the Bowen Basin fall into four age groups, two in the Lower Permian and two in the Upper Permian. Coal deposition in the Galilee Basin did not commence until late in the Lower Per- mi-an and persisted into the Upper Permian. The Lower Permian and early Upper Permian coalfields of the Reids Dome Beds, the Collinsville Coal Measures and the Fair Hill-German Creek Formation are restricted to the west flank of the Bowen Basin. The uppermost Permian Rangal-Elphinstone-Baralaba Coal Measures have widespread distribution across the northern half and on both flanks of the Basin. Coal Measures in the subsidiary basins at BlairAtho/ and Ca/en were probably deposited at the same time as the Collinsville Coal Measures. The structure of the north west flank of the Bowen and the east flank of the Galilee Basin is essentially simple, but in the remainder of the basin doming and faulting complicate the structure. Also, bordering a large sec- tion of the east flank, is the Dawson Tectonic Zone, where the beds are tightly folded and faulting is intense. Cok- ing of seams is common in the northern sector of the Basin associated with igneous intrusion. With the exception of the Duaringa Basin on the east flank of the Bowen Basin, Tertiary sediments and basalt flows are more common at the western basin margin. Thick deposits of Tertiary sediments also occur in the south of the Galilee Basin. Con- sequently, coal subcrop, especially in the older, more westerly situated, coal measures is often at depths in excess of 100 m. East of this, the depth of weathering can be as shallow as 13 m and most of the coal subcrop is acces- sible to mining by open cut techniques. Coals deposited in the early Upper Permian are commonly more vitrain rich than those above and below. In the Bowen Basin, coal rank decreases from the north west to the south east, that is, from the semi-anthracites associated with the Dawson Tectonic Zone to the sub-bituminous coals of the southern Galilee Basin.

The Red Dome deposit is located about 15 kilometres by road west of Chillagoe in far north Queensland. The deposit is within a well known band of mineralisation which is adjacent to the Chillagoe - Mungana railway line. Members of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are engaged in locating, extracting, processing, marketing and converting the worldÆs mineral wealth for its consumption in a useful form. We have an ethical responsibility as professionals to carry out our roles in such a way that we seek to optimise the recovery of that wealth for the benefit of the community, not only now, but also in the future. To be able to optimise, we must be able to measure with confidence the value of the commodity through the various stages of treatment from discovery of a geological anomaly to the end use. This introductory paper will provide an overview of some aspects of the issue, including the possible extension of the coverage of The InstituteÆs Codes to production accounting and reporting.

Recently an inorganic salt, sodium polytungstate (SPT), has become available that allows the preparation of non-toxic solutions of relative densities up to 3.1. It is relatively expensive and at the higher relative densities achievable, highly viscous. Alternative inorganic compounds may in the future be identified that overcome these limitations. The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd (AMIRA) has initiated a project to examine possible alternatives. However, it has been found that by the addition of finely divided ferrosilicon to solutions of SPT, relative densities of up to 4.0 can be achieved. A laboratory technique for density fractionation of sized mineral samples utilising this finding has been developed. This is currently being extended to study the potential applications of such liquids and suspensions in dynamic systems for mineral, coal and recycled waste separations.

Mineral exploration management has undergone major changes particularly in the last decade. Parallel to these changes in management, and partially responsible for them, have been the changes in governmental laws and regulations at both National and State levels reinforced by a highly competitive climate created by the exploration boom in Australia. The influence of overseas methods and approaches have been married to the Australian techniques resulting in a management climate which is not only familiar with the technical aspects of exploration, but is also familiar with the personnel, economic and legal phases associated with the expenditure of very large sums of money. The utilization of all the geosciences coupled with mathematical models and computer techniques for pre-selection and assessment of areas are now normal aids used in management decisions. Management techniques developed and being developed will ensure that successful exploration will be carried out if sufficient incentives are guaranteed.

A short study showing how first dry fill and later hydraulic sand fill has allowed mining to continue immediately adjacent to worked out areas in a mine 75 years old. This paper is a case study of filling in an old mine where for 30 years filling was not important until ground troubles were experienced after a series of parallel shrink stopes were pulled empty., Dry fill was distributed from the surface via a system of passes and conveyor belts. With the stabilization of the ground it then became possible to continue mining beside and above the old stopes using totally sealed and decanted hydraulic sand fill. A brief description of the dry fill is given and then more technical details of the hydraulic fill. The necessity for a well trained and experienced hydraulic fill crew is discussed along with the problems of filling small stopes in broken ground.

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addtion to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

Considerable quantities of dissolved nickel are lost in the waste liquors from the QNPL nickel treatment plant. Cementation, precipitation and ion exchange techniques were investigated to reduce this loss. Ion exchange was the most successful of the procedures studied and a process for recovering nickel from stripped ammoniacal process liquors was developed in the laboratory and scaled up to plant flow volumes. The system developed uses a carboxylic ion exchange resin operated in a completely ammoniacal cycle. The regenerant is itself regenerable using existing plant, thus the only loss is the stoichiometric value of NH4+ required to displace the exchanged cations from the resin. Existing plant sand/anthracite filter beds have been adapted for use as resin columns containing 3 cubic metres of resin capable of treating effluent at a flow rate of 6000 litres/min.

The Argyle AK1 Pit has been operating and producing over 25 per cent of the worldÆs diamonds by volume for over 20 years. The mining boom in Western Australia is creating upward cost pressures to ArgyleÆs mining operation while the price received for its product remains flat in comparison to many other Western Australian commodities. This incongruity, which when combined with other circumstances such as the pit being close to the end of its mine life, a decline in head grades and a tightening in operational constraints caused by the pitÆs maturity, is causing the leadership team at the mine to utilise innovative strategies in order to ensure that the open pit continues to perform economically until its final closure in late 2010. The strategies that will be discussed in this paper are step change business improvement methods, localisation of the workforce, employment of Aboriginal people and the use of a clear and concise consultation process in order to provide certainty to a workforce working in a pit during boom times where pit closure is imminent.

The issue of estimating evaporation in soils is central to the design of engineered soil caps for mine waste and landfill applications. In general, because evaporation from the soil is difficult to measure in the field, laboratory experiments and empirical methods have been used. Much of the earlier work has been conducted in soil science, although in recent years, geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers have given great deal effort to this work. The result of this increased interest is the development of numerical models, such as UNSATH and SoilCover for estimating evaporation. In this study laboratory-measured evaporation from soil columns was compared with evaporation predicted using the computer program SoilCover, and the analytical method proposed by Gardner and Hillel. Good agreement among the results was observed. Also the sensitivity of the predicted evaporation to soil hydraulic and geotechnical properties, such as saturated hydraulic conductivity and coefficient of volume change was discussed and the practical implication of the sensitivity were highlighted. The work has application in the design and construction of soil covers over sulfide-bearing mine waste and landfills.

The Utah International group of companies has a wide geographic spread of operations, including a significant interest inAustralia's largest coking coal operation in Queensland, steaming and coking coal mines in USA, a copper mine in Canada, a half interest in an iron ore operation in Brazil, a number of smaller operations, and a significant portfolio of undeveloped properties in South America, South Africa and South East Asia.The opportunity to acquire this group of companies presented an immediate problem to BHP in that it was regarded as too large for BHP to absorb by itself. In addition, there was a concern that such an acquisition would increase BHP's coking coal exposures to unacceptable levels. Despite these dilemmas, BHP was keen to acquire Utah.A plan was therefore developed and agreed to by General Electric (GE) (the then owner of Utah) which would give BHP nine months in which to put together a consortium to share in the ownership of the Queensland coal assets (plus coal assets owned by BHP), and to arrange a project financing for use by BHP and the consortium. BHP would own 100% of the rest of the assets.

æConventional wisdomÆ believes that fine particles have low flotation recoveries. Plant size û recovery graphs often have the classic æhillÆ shape û high recovery in the mid sizes and low recovery at the fine and coarse ends. Yet if mineral liberation is poor, low fines recovery may be because you don't grind fine enough! This apparent paradox is explained by the old concept of æsand/slimesÆ circuits, which recognises the different flotation needs of fine and coarse particles. This concept is overlooked in the push for simpler circuits and larger equipment. Most plants now treat all particles together in a wide size-distribution. Reagent conditions are set for the dominant coarser particles, so fines are starved of collector. Worse still if there are significant midsized composites û often these have to be rejected in cleaning to achieve target concentrate grade. But the conditions which reject mid-size composites û collector starvation and high depressants û also reject fine liberated particles. In fact, fines flotation can be excellent when flotation chemistry is tailored to fines.

Batu Hijau is a calc-alkaline, island arc porphyry copper-gold deposit located in the southwest corner of Sumbawa Island in the Banda archipelago of southern Indonesia. Proven and probable reserves are 913 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.53 per cent copper (10.631 billion pounds Cu) and 0.41 g/t gold (389 tonnes Au). Construction of the deposit infrastructure began in October 1996, and formal approval for the project mobilisation was granted by the Indonesian government in May 1997. Preoperational testing and start-up of the first grinding line is scheduled for mid-year 1999.Copper and gold mineralisation are genetically related to at least three tonalite porphyry dykes and small plugs which intrude a quartz diorite stock that was emplaced into andesitic to dacitic pyroclastic rocks and lava flows. Faults are uncommon, and where they occur they do not significantly displace hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation zones.

"In this paper, the reduction and separation behaviour of iron and slag in carbon composite iron ore pellets has been investigated experimentally using an electric resistance furnace simulating a rotary hearth furnace process. The factors that affect the formation of iron nuggets, such as temperature, holding time, molecular ratio of C/O and basicity, are discussed. Results show that the reduction of iron ore, carburisation of reduced iron and the composition and quantity of slag are very important for producing iron nuggets. Through optimisation of process parameters, iron nuggets can be formed below 1300¦C when holding time is 20 minutes, C/O is 0.7 and basicity less than 0.5. The capital cost of major items of mining equipment is very high. The operating cost of such equipment is also high. It is therefore important that such expensive equipment is used productively. To this end mine management uses production data systems and management accounting systems to monitor events and provide data for analysis to enable management to make operating and business optimisation decisions. This could be done better if there was an understanding of productivity in terms of its utilisation and efficiency components. What has been missing has been a methodology to properly account for the productivity of equipment in terms of its contribution in dollars to the costs and profit of the mine. An explanation of the Productivity Accounting methodology will be given. It will then be shown that productivity has two components, that of capacity utilisation and efficiency. These are defined and the dollar contribution of each to costs and profit shown. The efficiency component tracks the effect of proportional changes in input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes. The capacity utilisation component tracks the effect of step changes in the input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes.

Direct iron smelting reduction has been examined using a modified 50 kg induction furnace. The furnace was equipped with continuous raw material feeding, a top oxygen lance, argon bottom bubbling, and sensors for measurement of gas and bath temperatures, gas composition and other parameters. In the base case, iron ore was charged at the rate of 1.5 kg/h, coke flowrate was adjusted to maintain a char fraction in the slag at 30 wt per cent, the oxygen flowrate was 100 Nl/min and the post-combustion ratio (PCR) was 60 per cent. The PCR was varied from 45 to 75 per cent by changing the lance height relative to the bath surface. Smelting reduction of Whaleback iron ore was investigated at different post-combustion ratios and iron ore feedrates using coke and coals with different volatile matter. The rate of iron oxide reduction increased with increasing iron oxide concentration in the slag, with a slight deviation from a linear function. The post-combustion ratio affected iron ore reduction and partitioning of elements between phases in the smelting reduction furnace. The high volatile coal investigated was found to be unsuitable for iron smelting reduction in the laboratory furnace.

Estimation of operating costs in the nickel production industry requires a detailed analysis of material flows from mine to smelter to refinery. Despite the small number of nickel producers compared to other base metals, the existence of two very different ore types (sulphide and laterite) and a wide variety of mining and processing technologies make the identification of these flows of critical importance if an accurate global picture is to be obtained. Smelting and refining processes in nickel metallurgy have evolved with a high degree of adaptation to specific operating conditions in different locations. Overall costs are calculated by combining individual cost elements for each unit in production chains from mine to saleable metal product. The average cost of western world primary nickel production in 1995 was US$2.07/lb ($4560/tonne). Average operating costs remained virtually unchanged in the three years to 1995 after an 8.5 per cent fall in 1993, but a 3.9 per cent increase to $2.15/lb is expected for 1996. A major factor in this rise results from the lower prices of copper and cobalt this year, reducing the by-product credits available to major producers.

Attention to the design of facilities for drainage, of both surface water and seepage, made it possible to attain, for a qam impounding residues from a concentrating mill, a more stable sand wall which can eventually be carried to a greater height.EXPERIENCE WITH No. 1 DAMResidue from the lead zinc concentrating mill, which treats the ore from the Rosebery and Hercules Mines, was pumped 3,600 ft. through a 5-in. diameter woodstave pipeline to the site of the dam. It was formerly delivered through a 4-in. steel pipeline.State laws prevent the residue being discharged to waste into the Stitt River. Furthermore, as a pyritic residue it is a potential source of sulphur.Between 1936 and 1956 more than 1,000,000 tons. of residue was paddocked. The run-of-mill product was roughly classified at the dam in a 6-ft. diameter cone classifier and the sand fraction was pumped by a 3-in. pump to the front wall of the dam across a shallow valley. In underground ore mining of copper ore, lead-zinc ore, tin ore and fluorspare in German Democratic Republic geological situation is characterized by ore deposits of small thickness and great variability of ore grades and mining conditions. For long range mining strategy and short-term planning of production a model was developed fitting to make optimal economic mining decisions. Starting point of the model is a cost function representing all direct costs per unit recoverable metal in concentrate for each stoping unit (ore reserve block). In the costs function the results of regression analysis of ore grade and metal recovery in concentration plant were considered. All stoping units (ore reserve blocks) of a mine were arranged to growing direct costs. The relationships of recoverable metal, ore tonnages and corresponding costs were plotted in a diagram. The data processed by- computer and the graphic representation of the results make possible 1. economic evaluation of stopes and ore reserve blocks, 2. estimation of cut off grade, 3. optimization of works planning.
