I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by re-organising, and a wonderful method this is for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralisation This was written by the Roman Gaius Petronius in AD65. How much have things changed in nearly 2,000 years? What then does it take besides the fundamentals and good organisation to build a successful career in a successful organisation? I'm prepared to venture a list of what I'll'call Tips for Young Professionals. If you've got what it takes, and apply these, I think that you'll gain a great deal of satisfaction from your career, even if you don't reach the distant target each of you should have in mind now. So settle back in an advice-receiving mode, and please forgive me if I come across as a master of the bleedin' obvious, as Basil once accused his wife Sybil of being in the unforgettable Fawlty Towers.

The concentrations of trace metals in deep hydrothermal solutions (~1 km depth, 200 to >300¦C) from modern hydrothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, and Ladolam, Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea were obtained using a purpose-built downhole fluid sampler and ICP-MS analyses. The results range widely: gold (<0.1 - 23 ppb); silver (<3 - 2400 ppb); arsenic (100 - 18 000 ppm); antimony (2 - 1200 ppm); mercury (<1 - 78 ppb) and provide the basis for quantifying the flux and fate of metals as well as assessing their sources (Simmons and Brown, 2006, 2007). The steel industry is currently exploring hydrogen-enriched blast furnace operations as a means to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. However, there is a need to investigate the gas permeability behaviour of mixed burdens comprising of lump and sinter as the current knowledge regarding their behaviour is limited, particularly with regards to hydrogen enrichment. In the present study, a series of interrupted softening and melting (S&M) under load tests were carried out in a hydrogen rich gas environment (~15 per cent) in the temperature range from 1000 to 1300°C by placing different types of ferrous ore layer including Newman Blend Lump (NBLL), sinter and sinter-NBLL mixed burden in between two coke layers. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was then used to scan the interrupted test samples. Scanned images were first analysed using an image processing workflow implemented in ImageJ and the material simulator GeoDict (v2022) to segment different phases such as coke, ferrous and void based on their grey scale values. A quantitative analysis was then performed on the segmented images to estimate the phase volume fraction as well as bed permeability. Bed void fraction thus obtained agreed well with the bed contraction data obtained from the S&M test. It was further noted that both ferrous layer void fraction and bed permeability decreased linearly with increasing temperature for all ore samples. The mixed burden voidage changed in a similar fashion to the sinter, demonstrating a high temperature interaction between the two materials

After 60 years of operation, coal extraction at Solid Energy New ZealandÆs (SENZ) Strongman Mine, near Rapahoe is scheduled to end in early 2005. Up until 2003 the closure bond for Strongman Mine was only $930, and both SENZ and the West Coast Regional Council (WCRC) agreed that a more realistic level of bonding was required.   A conceptual closure plan has been developed by Golder Associates, and the cost of the work estimated. Closure includes decommissioning of equipment and facilities, rehabilitation and replanting of all disturbed areas and a period of maintenance and monitoring to verify that closure objectives have been met. Significant maintenance allowances are included to cover management of underground fire, subsidence and slope instability. These make up much of the potential ongoing environmental liability at the Strongman. All costs incurred beyond year 1 of closure are discounted to present value. Uncertainty in costs is addressed by Monte Carlo simulation, with an 80 % confidence level adopted.   A bond quantum of $3.0 million has been calculated for the first year of closure at Strongman. A three-year ærollingÆ bond is proposed. Progress will be reviewed annually, with the bond adjusted up or down accordingly. It is then renewed for a further three years. This allows for progressive return of the bond as rehabilitation objectives are met and verified. Similarly, if there are delays in meeting objectives, a proportion of the bond may need to be kept in place for a longer period than assumed. The level of bonding in place for the Strongman operation at any time in the future will therefore reflect the cost to complete the closure work programme.

A non-contacting under-belt capacitance and gamma-ray backscatter technique has been developed for the on-line measurement of moisture in coal. In this technique, moisture was correlated with radio frequency susceptance and conductance determined using an under-belt capacitance sensor in which a fringing electric field Interrogates a layer of coal on the conveyor belt directly above the sensor. To compensate for variations in the density and thickness of the coal layer, an under-belt gamma-ray backscatter gauge was used to measure an equivalent volume of coal.A plant trial of the technique was conducted at Stockton Borehole Colliery, SW Australia, where the gauges were installed on the coking coal product conveyor. Product moistures, in the range 7 - 14%, were determined with r.m.s errors of 0.50 and 0.25 wt% using on-belt and static off-belt gauges, respectively. The difference in the on-belt and off-belt gauge measurement accuracy was attributed to sampling errors in the calibration of the onbelt gauge.

The JORC Code, which has been in existence as a Code incorporated in the listing rules of the Australian Stock Exchange and New Zealand Stock Exchange since 1989 and 1992 respectively, has been revised and will be re-released in 2003. This revision followed a call for submissions in December 2001, the publication of an exposure draft in late-2002 and an exposure period during which a large number of constructive comments were received. These comments were reviewed and a further exposure draft released as part of the current exposure draft of the ASX listing rules. It is anticipated that the final Code will be incorporated into the stock exchanges listing rules in late-2003. The 1999 JORC Code has been the standard on which other reporting Codes have been based, each of which has contained refinements. Three in particular, the Reporting Code from the United Kingdom/Ireland/Western Europe, the new Canadian Reporting standards and the SAMREC Code from South Africa, influenced JORC in the preparation of the 2003 JORC Code. Whilst there are differences between the 1999 Code and the 2003 Code, these changes are mainly in the guidelines. The Code definitions, which are largely in accord with agreed international definitions, remain substantially unchanged. The two main changes in the 2003 Code are the requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation relating to the reporting of Exploration Results, and the introduction of æRecognised Overseas Professional OrganisationsÆ as overseas organisations to which Competent Persons may belong. Other changes include: clarification of the reporting of exploration targets or potential; the rearrangement of the diamond reporting clauses; the introduction of guidelines for the reporting of Industrial Minerals; modification of the coal clauses and recognition of the new Coal Guidelines; and the introduction of a guideline encouraging the discussion of relative accuracy and confidence in resource/reserve estimates. Other lesser changes to the Code are listed and discussed briefly. The release of the 2003 JORC Code maintains the standard set by JORC as a world leader in the development of mineral reporting Codes and their adoption by industry.

An improved ability to predict dilution for narrow vein deposits enables more accurate economic comparisons between mechanised longhole stoping and other narrow vein mining methods, as well as reducing uncertainty surrounding dilution estimates for deposits at the prefeasibility/ feasibility stage. This paper proposes narrow vein dilution prediction and minimisation strategies for both greenfield sites and operating mines, respectively. The narrow vein dilution method (NVD method) is a tool for more accurately predicting longhole narrow vein dilution. The method is based on a new concept called benchmark stoping width. Benchmark stoping width is based on probabilistic analysis of overbreak distributions from a typical longhole narrow vein mine. The premise for the NVD method is that dilution associated with longhole stoping can be predicted using the benchmark stoping width. In addition to dilution prediction, the NVD method also includes strategies for narrow vein dilution minimisation generally, including; filling, cablebolting, stress relaxation, extraction sequencing and blast overbreak.

Preparing for automated sample preparation has two facets; the need for better procedures as seen by the laboratory Manager and the approach to be adopted as envisaged by the equipment manufacturer. Both have many options and during the 1990s some at least of these options will be tried. As automation of sample preparation is only just beginning, can it be said that there is a real need for better procedures. What does automated sample preparation have to offer? Does it have real advantages or is it just a marketing tool to sell equipment?

During the last decades, maintenance has changed from an ordinary repair activity to a complex function that plays an essential role contributing for the companyÆs results. The increasing level of complexity of modern equipment motivates maintenance personnel to improve both techniques, and management systems, in order to face the new challenges. Managing properly those modern means of production requires knowledge of methods and planning systems, controlling and performing maintenance tasks, in such a way that two objectives are achieved at the same time: system efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This paper shows CVRDÆs experience on evolving and implementing a model to plan and manage maintenance activities in order to achieve a higher level of performance on its operations.

This paper presents a case study to reduce the operational cost on the secondary ball mill circuit in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines. The circuit includes two five-metre diameter ball mills each closed with a cluster of ten 15-inch cyclones. The operating cost for both ball mills is about six million Australian dollars per annum.The concentrator achieves 75 per cent of the plant design capacity with one ball mill operating, but will have to use two ball mills when 100 per cent plant capacity is required. The optimisation study on the circuit identified a new flowsheet that enabled the concentrator to reach 100 per cent of the capacity by using one of the two secondary ball mills. The success of the project utilised the existing equipment rationally and saved the operational cost for one ball mill at full concentrator capacity. A further simplified secondary circuit is proposed using the IsaMill for the secondary grinding duty. Performance of the IsaMill circuit and the potential cost savings are predicted.

Native seed and plants are often a core input into the rehabilitation process of mine closure. Native plant establishment rate and performance is a function of many input elements including seed quality (purity and germination percentage), processing, treatment, storage, supply chain handling, application and ongoing management. Traditionally native seed has been supplied with very limited supporting information which in some cases has led to establishment failures, repeated attempts at successful plantings, and biosecurity issues, leading to increased rehabilitation costs for mining companies. Product procurement scrutiny, and sustainability credential requirements, in all supply chains is increasing the need for transparent, accurate, verified, and certified information. This collectively continues to evolve towards a social license to operate in all industries, including mining. The Australian Seeds Authority (ASA), in partnership with native seed supplier AustraHort, traceability software company Trust Provenance and supporting partners including Transport for NSW and Queensland Transport and Main Roads (TMR), were recipients of a DAWE National Traceability Grant. The project team has developed a framework and traceability software platform currently being piloted within the Australian native seed industry. The framework and platform allow for all critical-tracking-events along the journey of a native seed batch to be easily captured utilising a smart phone application (APP) and the global standard for data capture. The platform provides a unique identification for each batch of seed and critical tracking event. The batch ID belongs to that batch and all supply chain stakeholders can contribute to batch traceability by providing more information/data to increase information integrity. This gives the end user, and other stakeholders, increased levels of trust in the product to support value, increase efficiency and reduce costs. For mining companies these efficiencies and cost reductions are in the form of information availability across site/company, potentially improved vegetation establishment, less rework and efficient monitoring. Ultimately this contributes to safe, stable and sustainable rehabilitation. By capturing data on harvest, logistics, storage (including temperature and humidity), aggregation/blending, treatment, application and ongoing management, the native seed industry and end utilisers of native seed have a greater level of product integrity, brand integrity and information integrity.

Na2CO3 is a powerful flux for both dephosphorization and desulphurization in oxidizing atmospheres. In order to study refining with Na2CO3 and the nature of the Na2CO3 slag itself, hot metal (4Kg) was melted in Al203 crucibles in a high frequency induction furnace and oxidised with oxygen under Na2CO3 slag. The behaviour of Na2CO3 at high temperature was observed by thermobalance. It was found that dephosphorization ceases in a few minutes and [,P] after refining is easily lowered to less than 0.010%. [%P] after refining is affected by [Si], [P] of hot metal, the refining temperature and the consumption of Na2CO3. Desulphurization also ceases in a few minutes but it shows curious behaviour, increase of [S], decrease of (S) and increase in sulphur lost, during the latter half of run. [%S] after refining is also affected by [P] of hot metal, the refining temperature and the consumption of Na2C03o

Increasing attention is being focussed worldwide on the strategic environmental assessment of mining projects, including consideration of cumulative environmental effects. In New Zealand there is now an end in sight for inappropriate delays in resource consent approval of responsible mining projects. This paper investigates six case examples of recently consented mining and quarrying projects, whose applications were notified. It also explores the nature of delays that occurred, the factors that contributed to the delays, and whether the consent process delivered fair and effective public participation and desirable environmental outcomes.

"Underground coal mining is the dominant method of extracting thermal and coking coal in the southern and western coalfields of New South Wales. Monitoring mining-related subsidence forms an important component of environmental impact assessments and subsidence management plans, particularly when there are conflicts between the interests and requirements of mining and environment and community groups. However, there are few specific guidelines for monitoring the impacts of subsidence on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, leading to inconsistent policy approaches and highly variable abilities of monitoring programs to accurately detect biological change.This paper highlights the use of a conceptual framework to guide the development of a long-term ecological monitoring program at an underground coalmine in the Western Blue Mountains, New South Wales. Two pilot studies are described: determining the level of observer agreement to assess the condition of a vulnerable tree species (Capertee Stringybark) comparing field sampling methods for detecting a rare heath shrub, Epacris muelleri, using a power analysis to determine sampling intensity requirements.These examples demonstrate that investment in initial pilot studies to test different monitoring approaches can have long-term benefits for stakeholders by more confidently being able to detect potential impacts.CITATION:McCaffrey, N?B,?Glenn, V, Erskine, P?D, Johns,?C?and Fletcher, A?T, 2014. The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100,000 m3 of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity in New Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.

The Peak Gold Mines Pty Ltd (PGM) operations are located approximately 9 km south of Cobar, NSW. PGM currently mines and treats ore from three separate orebodies within 5 km of the original plant. Production from the original Peak orebody ceased in April 2002, with ore currently sourced from underground at New Occidental and Perseverance, while New Cobar supplies ore from an open cut mine. In March 2003, Wheaton Minerals Asia Pacific purchased the operation from Rio Tinto who operated the mine for around ten years. The Perseverance deposit is situated between 600 and 1000 m south of the Peak orebody. Access is via shaft from Peak to 630 m below surface and then by decline to the northern end of the deposit locally known as Zone A. Development of the resource commenced mid 2002 to set up for a long hole open stoping operation at 25 m level spacing. The first production stope was successfully brought on line December 2003. The Perseverance deposit is hosted by sediments and volcanics along the eastern margin of the Devonian Cobar basin and is one of many deposits with the Cobar Gold Field. The Cobar Gold Field has produced approximately 2.5 million ounces of gold since 1880. The Perseverance area had long been considered prospective due to the presence of old workings at the southern extensions of Peak line of lode. Significant mineralisation was first discovered at Perseverance in 1994 when PGM drilled a hole targeted 950 m below the historic workings. The target was based on an apparent plunge to the stratigraphic controls to the Peak Orebody. Subsequent exploration within and around the ægreaterÆ Perseverance area has been significantly aided through the use of downhole electro-magnetic surveys due to the close spatial association between gold and sulfide mineralisation.

The paper reviews the majority of associations and institutions which operate in support of the Australian mineral industry. The review covers historical aspects of each organisation and the current activities and management structure. The linkages between the organisations through membership are briefly discussed. The paper comments on the evolution of the formation of the organi- sations and the networks between them that do exist and operate regu- larly. Rationalisation or a process to consider formation of new groups to fill gaps in the network are recommended for further research.

The application of single liquid cement for fracture grouting in base rock may have history more than 120 years. The disadvantage of it is difficult to increase the grouting efficiency, because the jelling time of it is very long and hard to control. The double liquid grout, such as chemical grouts and cement water glass grout was developed at the end of 1960.'s Although the jelling time of this kind of grout can be controlled, it mast adopt double liquid grouting technology, use complicated equipment and is not easy to control component's ratio of the grout. Another disadvantage for chemical grout is high price, and have pollution to environment. OCE series single liquid grout is the effective grout material developed recently by making large efforts in Ohina. Main feature of it is that the jelling time is easy to control, materials from cement and clay are very cheap and without pollution to environment, and the grout can be injected by single liquid technology. The effect of QCE series grout has been proven by its application in China. It can be believed that QCE grout has great economic efficiency and will give a push to develop grout material.
