British Coal's Selby Complex is the newest producing mine in the United Kingdom. The reasons behind its origins, planning and design are explained. Some detail is given of equipment used, with the emphasis being placed on the unique features of its layout. The entire project has been planned and constructed over many years and the design has consequently changed, principally in response to the geology of the coalfield and improving technology. In spite of many totally unexpected difficulties, the mine, which is not yet in full production, has the highest productivity in the United Kingdom.

A broker relies heavily on mineral valuations and independent experts' reports to provide the fundamental information, both technical and commercial, which provides the basis of estimating the sharemarket value of securities and underlying assets. It is important to appreciate the significant variance that can occur between the market value and other types of valuation at a particular point in time. In general, most experts' reports and valuations seek to provide estimates of technical/fundamental or ""fair"" value which correspond to the Corporations Law and accounting standards requirements. They do not usually attempt to estimate (stock) market values and it is usually and quite correctly the broker's task to estimate market values on the basis of a technical appraisal and consideration of all other commercial, market and financial influences. Therefore ideally, an independent experts' report or information memorandum will include material relating to commercial and management aspects of a company as well as detailed technical reviews and fundamental valuations. Wherever sensible cash flow projections can be made, cash flow-derived valuations, usually based on discounted cash flow (DCF) calculations, remain the preferred valuation methodology. Brokers in general would not argue with this preference. However, there is a paucity of examples of valuations where alternative methods are applied as a check on the reasonableness of a DCF-based estimate.

High solids brown coal slurries have been prepared with concentrations approaching those achieved with bituminous black coals. The high inherent water content and macroporosity of Victorian brown coals have been reduced in a controlled manner by chemical and mechanical means. The hydrophobicity of the coal surface has been increased sufficiently to reduce the tendency for swelling and water uptake. This together with densification has allowed the solids content to be progressively improved from 25% solids with raw coal to 65% solids with modified coals. Both raw brown coal and modified brown coal suspensions show shear thinning behaviour resulting in lower viscosities at higher flow rates. All coal suspensions displayed a yield stress once sufficient solids concentration was achieved. This yield stress can be used in the prevention of solids settling. Under simple shear mixing the network structure that provides the yield stress quickly breaks down to a low viscosity fluid with reduced yield stress and a pumpable consistency. The time necessary for structural recovery is in the order of days permitting shut-down and start-up of fuel delivery systems.

Three separate and unconfined aquifers occur in the Hilton area, named relative to position in relation to ore horizons: Footwall Aquifer in the east; Ore-Zone Aquifer within the ore-bearing Urquhart Shales; and the Hangingwall Aquifer in the west.It is the on-going strategy it Hilton to drain the Ore-Zone Aquifer which occupies structurally- and sulphide-controlled leached zones in the steeply west dipping strata. The aquifer affects considerable ore reserves to 480 m below the surface. Dewatering began in 1976, and is essentially completed to 4 level (240 m below surface). Dewatering efforts are now based on 8 level (480 m below surface).

The use of geological data for optimisation of operating plants has become a significant part of the modern process mindset. The underlying principle is to convert spatial geological data into metallurgical information to drive production and mine planning, blast design, blending strategies and plant set-up. Increasingly the process designer is required to interface with geological and mining staff to propose the best investment strategy for a project’s benefit.The geometallurgical model development for the Zafranal copper-gold project commenced in March, 2010, several months after the start of a major drilling campaign by AQM Copper Inc. The initial evaluation stage required review of historical Teck RC data to determine areas of metallurgical interest within the project. As drilling transitioned from RC to diamond drilling, core that was considered representative of the resource was selected and subjected to MLA mineralogy analysis. When coupled with sequential copper analyses this allowed calibration of an assay derived mineralogy model, allowing process concept options and a preliminary test program to be developed. This Phase 1 test program provided a preliminary process design, operating costs and anticipated concentrate grades and recoveries. Both this data and resource estimation were used to generate a preliminary Whittle pit optimisation based on maximising net smelter return, which in turn fed into a preliminary mine plan. The preliminary mine plan, in conjunction with geological logs and core results was used to develop a phase 2 metallurgical test program, where variability tests were conducted throughout the resource and composites formed to investigate specific years of the mine plan in locked cycle flotation. In addition comminution tests were modelled against geometallurgical domains allowing comminution components values to be calculated for 36?000 m of core. A flotation geometallurgical model was developed and incorporated into the resource model allowing concentrate grades and recoveries to be estimated on a block-by-block basis.

A large number of countries in the world now have some regulation for labelling the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in food. For the last ten years, ISO/TC 34/SC 16 has been providing methods, guidelines and requirements concerning the evaluation of molecular biomarkers including GMOs. This activity makes sure that stakeholders on all sides of commercial transactions are satisfied and their marketing or regulatory needs are met. Developing and maintaining a transparent, science-based environment for users of horizontal methods for molecular biomarker analysis is a high priority. Sampling and analysis of molecular biomarkers has become critically important for food and agricultural organisations developing, producing, distributing and selling genetically engineered, non-genetically engineered, identity preserved and/or organic crops and their derived products and preventing their respective destructive diseases. To aid in international harmonisation, a new work item proposal to develop an ISO type A management system standard (MSS) for organisations including laboratories using molecular biomarker analysis and sampling has been submitted to ISO/TC 34/SC 16. The purpose of this MSS is ensuring that determination of the presence, absence or quantification of a particular biomarker with a relationship to a product quality determinant, a marketing claim, a regulation or a plant pathogen is carried out under a suitable quality assurance / quality control system. Oxidised pellets have become an indispensable high-quality charge for blast furnaces (BF) due to their uniform particle size, high iron grade, high mechanical strength, good metallurgical performance, as well as relatively low energy consumption and gaseous pollutant emissions in pellet production. Nevertheless, due to the rapid development of the global steel industry, highquality pellet feeds are becoming more and more scarce. In order to broaden the source of pellet feeds and reduce the production cost of pellets, more and more steel mills are going to use coarse iron ore fines with relatively low iron grade and low impurities for preparation of desirable pellet feeds through a typical wet grinding-settling-filtering process. In this work, the grinding, settling and filtering behaviour of Brazilian and Australian iron ore fines are studied and compared, aiming at finding out the internal relationship between the mineralogical characteristics of different iron ore types and their grinding-settling-filtering performance. The results show that the grindability is heavily dependent on the hardness of iron ores, which is governed by the mineralogical characteristics of the raw materials. Usually the higher the hardness, the more grinding energy is required. Except for Brazilian specularite, Australian hematite-goethite type iron ore fines and Brazilian hematite ore fines exhibit good grindability with a Bond Work Index of about 10–15 kW•h/t. In addition, the settling and filtering performance of ground iron ores are largely affected by the density, mineralogical characteristics of iron ore fines (eg, quantity of clay minerals and goethite and porosity of ore particles), grinding fineness, etc. Generally, iron ore fines with higher density, lower quantity of soft minerals (clay and goethite) and larger particle size give superior settling and filtering performance. For iron ore fines with inferior grinding, settling and filtering performance, applying more energy-efficient grinding techniques, blending with ore types with good settling and filtering performance can reduce grinding energy consumption and improve settling and filtration rates to maximise the productivity of equipment and lower the operational cost

The area has been in production since 1974, while the Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited (AMA) operation commenced production in 1976. Subsidence profiles over longwalls at West Cliff Colliery (WCC) are predicted by three methods, NCB Emperical Method, Salustowicz's Profile Functions and Superposition of Two Critical Profiles. A method of deriving maximum subsidence using local data is also presented. For the first four longwalls, the results are compared with those from the subsidence surveys conducted during and after the extraction of each longwall. Longwall V has not yet been extracted, so the results are for the predicted subsidence profile. Superposition of two critical profiles is carried out in an attempt to check the principle of superposition. In addition, strata movement above the extracted longwalls is discussed.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists essentially of a mineralized bituminous shale sequence that incorporates tuffites, numerous graded beds, and isolated but massive slump breccia horizons.The principal sulphides are' pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. These occur mostly in the shales. The accompanying turbidites contain only minor mineralization.The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated in relation to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments.A sedimentary origin is proposed for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity, salinity, regional faulting, and climate are examined as possible factors that may have contributed to sulphide formation and which could be used as criteria for mineral exploration.The metallurgy 'of the McArthur deposit is discussed in terms of its geological history.

The AMIRA International P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) project is an interdisciplinary research collaboration between 17 global mineral companies and four research organisations aimed at providing support for the emerging industry trend of geometallurgy. The main aim of the project is to develop predictive geometallurgical indices which can be incorporated into a resource block model to maximise the commercial value of an orebody and to minimise the social and environmental impact of mining operations.Researchers at the Parker Centre/CSIRO have been focusing on the development of predictive hydrometallurgical indices for the GeMIII project via rapid, small-scale, cost-effective tests and protocols for comparative ranking of attributes relevant to leach performance. The focus of the small-scale leach tests has been to determine the leach index (relative indication of leach performance), recovery, impurity deportment, reagent consumption, effect of size/degree of liberation and mineralogy of samples for their relative ranking. Predictive tests for heap leach hydrology (related to agglomerate characteristics) and slurry rheological behaviour are also being developed.

There are many important physical phenomena in mine ventilation which involve transient mass and heat transfer processes. These processes have been modeled using differential equations often solved with close form solution. Within the last two decades, many numerical schemes have been devised to solve these mass-transfer problems. Much of this effort has focused on variants of the finite element and finite difference methods. In this paper, the solution of mass transfer models in mine ventilation by finite difference technique is discussed. Specifically, the computational effort and the accuracy of the solution are presented.

Waihi Gold Mining Co Ltd [WGM], operated by Normandy Mining, has been internationally recognised for its achievements in environmental management at the Martha Mine at Waihi. In a proactive approach to dealing with community concerns regarding blast vibrations on the North Wall cutback, trials were performed using the Cardox System [Cardox], to determine feasibility of achieving economic fragmentation of andesite overburden whilst bettering management levels of 5 mm/s peak particle velocity. Cardox is a non-explosive pressure breaking system which uses high pressure CO2, Results against conventional Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil [ANFO] using a variety of delays showed that conventional blasting techniques could produce marginal fragmentation within the management levels with occasional excursions, whereas Cardox produced the required fragmentation while not registering on the vibration monitoring equipment. Fragmentation to enable normal excavation by a Hitachi EXII00 hydraulic excavator was achieved with a yield of 16m3 per round. The trails indicated that fragmentation with Cardox at the yields required of over 18m3 per round was possible with further product development. The trial demonstrated that non-explosive pressure breaking is feasible and its application warranted where environmental concerns affect the cost-benefit economics of production blasting in sensitive areas.

Martha Mine is an open pit gold-silver mine, located within the township of Waihi, 150km southeast of Auckland and is operated as a joint venture between Normandy Mining Ltd. 67 %) as Manager and Otter Gold Mines Ltd. (33%). The deposit was historically mined, by underground methods from 1888 to 1952, producing 5.5 moz of gold and 30 moz of silver, from 11 mt of ore. The current operation began in 1988, producing, to June 1999 - 867,245 oz of gold and 5.5 moz of silver from 9.5 mt of ore. The licensed reserves were due to be mined out by late 2000. Consents were granted in December 1998 to allow the expansion of the operation through to 2007 accessing an additional 7.5 mt of ore at 3.4 gpt Au and 26.0 gpt Ag for 800,000 oz of gold and 6.4 moz of silver. The key elements of the expansion are: 1. Pit enlargement 2. Upgraded crushing and material handling facilities 3. Construction of a second tailings storage facility 4. Upgraded water treatment capacity 5. Increased operating capacity This paper presents an update of expansion activities to date.

Concern has been expressed that Vezins can be biased when used for sampling fine materials if the cutter speed is as high as the 0.6 m/s which is often used. Using modelling techniques that consider airflow as well as particles, we have endeavoured to investigate sampling bias as a function of the size of fine particles, cutter aperture, cutter speed, shape of cutter blades, and the size of the gap between the inlet pipe and the cutter blades. Using crude estimates of the rate of airflow and a simple model of a single particle moving through air led to an approximate rule that bias will not occur due to mechanisms related to airflow for particles larger than about 200 microns; and bias will always occur for particles smaller than about 40 microns. The Bureau of Mineral Resources has been engaged in regional geological and geophysical field work in the Alligator River and Cobourg Peninsula area since 1971, following the discovery of major uranium deposits. Geophysical work commenced with a regional airborne magnetic and radiometric survey which was followed up by some helicopter and ground work in August 1973. The interpretation of the earlier radiometric work is presented in conjunction with the results obtained from the follow-up work. Analyses of 100 outcrop and drill core samples collected have provided basic information on the physical properties and concentrations of uranium and thorium in various rock types. The uranium determinations were made by X-ray fluorescence and delayed neutron analysis, good agreement being obtained between the two methods. X-ray fluorescence was the main analytical technique used because of its ability to produce both uranium and thorium determinations.

The porphyry copper minerals of Melanesia occur within a host of narrow veinlets in predominantly quartz diorite stocks or as contact metasomatic masses in skarns adjacent to the intrusion. Some 90 per cent of the constituent minerals comprise pyrite or marcasite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite with the remainder mainly bornite and hematite with accessory rutile and chalcocite together with several trace minerals. Gold is found mainly as inclusions in chalcopyrite, and minor molybdenite occurs likewise.Of particular significance is the persistent occurrence of accessory rutile of hydrothermal origin intimately intergrown with chalcopyrite. The rutile occurs relatively late in the hydrothermal sequence and upon weathering of the deposit may be released on a cumulative basis possibly in sufficient amounts to constitute a particulate pathfinder mineral which may aid in prospecting.Rutile is present in all the Melanesian occurrences studied and is also prominent in several American deposits.The porphyry copper mineralogy is characterized by the presence of accessory hydrothermal rutile intergrown with chalcopyrite.

"The financial model is an integral component of any project evaluation based on mineral resources, ore reserves and (at least internally) exploration targets. Given the unity of purpose for preparing financial models for project evaluation purposes, the diversity of both format and content of the finalised models is surprising. Many models are prepared by staff or consultants who are comfortable with a particular format that may be used for other purposes, such as budget preparation or financial reporting. It is natural in these situations that the practitioner will take these models and adapt them to the purpose. The end result may or may not succeed in providing a clear, accurate and sufficiently detailed view of the project’s economic viability.When preparing a model, the practitioner should be cognisant of the interpretation and review, or audit, process. The auditor may be a consultant or employee of a bank, potential equity provider or of the project sponsor itself. Depending upon the scale of the project and the level of participation of the entity that the auditor represents, the financial model will be interrogated more or less rigorously. In any event, the end user will require the model to permit easy change of inputs and will wish to confirm that such change is appropriately and thoroughly transmitted throughout.Accordingly, there are some ‘dos and don’ts’ that can be readily applied in the creation of the financial model that will greatly assist the end user, not just in the change of inputs, but also in reviewing the model’s integrity.
