Technology is playing an increasingly large role in the operations of our mines. There is a temptation to regard the implementation of technological systems as the objective itself when, in reality, systems are used to support a business process. Only when the process succeeds will the systems be seen to succeed. Understanding the distinction between system and process is critical. This understanding, together with the resultant holistic approach, is considered to be critical to successful implementation and operation of Mine Control process. This paper examines the critical factors essential to success in establishing and sustaining a Mine Control process that maximises benefits to an operation. These factors have been developed during the author's experience of nearly 30 years in Mine Control projects across over 50 sites. Each factor is discussed in relation to real world examples at well-known mines.

This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.

In practice a sampling solution is a compromise of many requirements: the sample should be representative; the sampling system should also be reliable, less than 95 per cent availability restricts the use of the assayed sample for process control purposes; no sample is the worst sample, and investment costs and installation space/layout are frequently a restriction. For instance, online X-ray analysers for process control introduce a delimitation error by the nature of X-ray physics. Thus only in special cases a relative accuracy better than three per cent relative, as one standard deviation, is achieved. A sampling system for process control needs not to be, as representative, for so many sample properties, as one for composite laboratory analysis samples. Sampling system maintenance is also an important issue. There are many sampling systems in the industry which have been difficult to maintain and are in disuse for lack of resources or incentives to keep them running. Pierre Gy developed the most generally accepted sampling theory. One of the main principles is that all particles in a one-dimensional process stream should have equal chances of being included into the sample. A correctly designed and operated transversing cutter comes close to this goal but has limitations in temporal representativity. For slurries an acceptable solution in many cases is to use a fixed vertical cutter(s) in a position where the slurry is well-mixed by turbulence and other means. For online analysis, reliability problems are mostly related to faulty design or installation of the piping system to the analyser. Properties of material processed, process flow sheet and piping details before and after the sampler have to be taken into account when deciding on which sampling arrangement is appropriate. Guidelines and some solutions to these issues are presented in this paper.

The Project Hobson tunnel excavation was the first use in New Zealand of an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM). The tunnelling on the project was very successful and break-through was achieved three weeks ahead of program, demonstrating that tunnelling can be undertaken in Auckland with a high degree of cost certainty.Project Hobson involved the replacement of an existing 90 year old above ground sewer that crosses Hobson Bay in Auckland, New Zealand, and which had reached the end of its economic life, with a 3 km long, 3.7 m internal diameter segmentally lined bored tunnel. The NZD$ 118 M project has provided several environmental benefi ts to the Owner, Watercare Services Ltd and the local community:· provide capacity to meet projected growth in the region,· virtually eliminate wastewater overflows into Hobson Bay and the Waitemata Harbour, and· remove an obtrusive visual feature and open up the bay for recreational purposes.Auckland’s bedrock is a weak sandstone/siltstone (East Coast Bays Formation), subject to infilled paleovalleys. The geology in the region has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20 km of the city centre.The paper describes the design and construction challenges for the projects, including TBM performance, ‘sticky spoil’ management, and risks associated with basalt lava flows and two paleovalleys. The paper also highlights the reasons for the success of the project, including a rigorous approach to risk management during design, and effective planning during construction. Other useful data such as the effect on the watertable caused by closed face tunnelling, and ‘faceloss’ estimates derived from settlement arrays are included in the paper.Project Hobson also saw the successful implementation of a Geotechnical Baseline Report – one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia.

The nation of Fiji is located the South Pacific on the æRim of FireÆ some four hours flying time from the eastern sea board of Australia. It is a tourist destination situated on the main route from Australia to the Americas. Fiji is a developing country that has had a fewsetbacks but the country has able, happy people that are very resilient. Most importantly, the country is a safe destination for tourists and businesspeople as the local people are friendly, have good ethics, and most speak English. Fiji is a very willing nation, hungry for knowledge and advancement. The Fiji geological setting on the æRim of FireÆ, that runs from New Zealand across the Pacific through Fiji and on to Papua NewGuinea, has many large deposits of gold and copper. Fiji is an exciting destination for mineral explorers with discoveries of gold, silver, manganese, bauxite, iron and copper. Gold was first discovered in 1921 and the first two mines opened in 1935; one of which was Emperor Gold Mining Company (EGM) the other being Mt Kasi. EGM mines gold on the margin of the Tavua caldera, some 85 km north of the Nadi international airport. EGM has operated continuously for close to 70 years, producing approximately 6.9 million ounces of gold and has an underground reserve of 847 600 ounces with a total mineral resource of 12 335 600 tonnes at 10 g/t (as given in the Emperor Mines Limited Annual report 2003). The mineralisation in Fiji is very exciting and it is common to discover spectacular intersections and outcrops, which are typical for this type of epithermal narrow vein mineralisation, but be aware that the orebodies are variable and not easy to understand.

Much of the theory upon which the Sublevel Caving (SLC) method is based was developed in Scandinavia many years ago. It was based mainly on æbinÆ theory and æellipsoid of drawÆ configurations derived from sandbox models. In many cases, classical SLC layouts influenced by these early theories obtained relatively poor results. Early dilution entry, low tonnage factors and low recoveries were commonly experienced. SLC soon gained the reputation of being a high dilution, low recovery and development intensive method. This led to SLC falling into disfavour generally, other than as a pillar reclamation method used at the end of the life of mines. More recently a number of mines, notably those in Australia, have adopted SLC as a primary extraction method and have achieved good recovery results. The reason for the better results is believed to be an outcome of modifications in some of the basic design parameters and operational procedures. This has led to questions being raised regarding the original æbin theoryÆ assumptions and classical SLC layout designs. It is clear that the fragmentation and flow characteristics occurring in a choke blast situation (compaction of waste, variable size and shape of fragmentation throughout the ring) conflicts significantly with the assumptions of regular loose flow of uniform, fine grained, material in a bin. Interactive versus independent draw conditions can also materially effect the outcome of a SLC operation. The good results obtained more recently can only be explained by using ænewÆ models of behaviour, which have to a large extent been borrowed from block caving. If these models are correct, they point to a number of design and operational changes that can be applied to improve the effectiveness of SLC. This paper discusses the factors that may not have been fully considered in early SLC design and modelling. It emphasises the importance of delayed dilution entry as a primary objective of sound SLC design and provides a basis for efficient SLC design and operation.

The reverse cationic flotation using the starch as depressor of iron oxides is the most efficient upgrading process when is applied to the simple systems composed by hematite/magnetite and quartz. The fundamental studies performed with iron ore samples from different deposits over the world (Brazil, Russia, Mexico) confirmed the inefficiency of starch when the silica content in the concentrate is controlled by Fe/Mg-bearing minerals. The main approaches for solving these issues focused on using new collector formulations or new depressants. However, the alternative depressants tested inhibited flotation of quartz or were less efficient as iron oxide depressant. In this work, a comparison between new amidoamine collector with conventionally used etheramine and oleate collectors in the flotation of pure minerals and actual iron ore samples was performed. The electrophoretic mobility, contact angle and infrared spectroscopy measurements allowed to deduce the hindrance effect as main mechanism of selective adsorption of the amidoamine on the quartz surface compared to hematite and kaolinite. Molecular modelling studies revealed that this steric hindrance effect can be explained by the combination of the "shield" formed by the coordinating water molecules on the (001)-D2 hematite surface and the large volume of the amidoamine head group. The amidoamine tested as collector without use of a depressant showed excellent flotation selectivity allowing the total flotation of quartz from a mixture with hematite. High collector performance and selectivity were confirmed during reverse flotation of quartz using continuous flotation column (D = 500 mm; H = 4000 mm) and allowed to produce the iron concentrates with more than 60 per cent of iron from the rejected slimes samples of Vargem Grande 2 processing plant (Iron Quadrangle, MG, Brazil). The new collector allowed to develop flexible flotation flow sheets to process the iron ore with a complex gangue mineralogy and unlock the old altered tailings and slimes product as new resources

Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and heavy mineral ores (Wills, 1992). Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating many minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid such as water or air (Wills, 2006).The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the slurry concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the splitters used to separate the tailings, middlings and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin and Renaud, 2014). Wash water is an important control variable used to wash away entrapped light minerals from the concentrate stream (Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Sadeghi et al concluded the spiral operation to be sensitive to the wash water flow addition and resultant economic trade-off. Increasing the wash water flow rate increases the concentrate grade at the expense of the iron recovery.The paper addresses the effects of dripping wash water onto the concentrate stream of a spiral processing fine iron ore. The dripping wash water system offers a low flow alternative and could possibly provide a good balance between grade and recovery of valuable minerals without using excessive water. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentrations; the wash water rate and the splitter positions were kept constant.The use of wash water at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration improved the Fe grade in the concentrate by about 1.5 per cent, six per cent and eight per cent respectively. The additional SiO2 rejected by the wash water is approximately three per cent, nine per cent, and 11 per cent at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration respectively. Addition of wash water is shown to have minimum effect on grade at 30 per cent solid concentration, and Fe upgrades obtained with and without wash water were found to be similar. Notable upgrades were observed at 35 and 40 per cent solid concentration with wash water. The results obtained suggest that the additional SiO2 rejection by wash water increases with an increase in solid concentration. This suggests that the benefit of using the drip system is notable at higher solid concentration. It is believed that at lower solid concentration SiO2 particles are reasonably free to move around and are possibly less entrapped than at high solid concentration.The Fe grade/recovery and solid concentration relationship with wash water showed a non-linear correlation. The Fe grade increases with an increase in solid concentration up to a somewhat optimum point and then drops as solid concentration increases further. The recovery of Fe on the other hand follows a converse relationship with solid concentration, the recovery decreases from 30 per cent to 35 per cent solid concentration and then increases again at 40 per cent solid concentration. The increase in recovery at higher solid concentration could possibly be explained by the fact that the mass yield to concentrate also increases with solid concentration. Since recovery is a function of both grade and mass yield, the higher recovery at 40 per cent solid concentration is likely due to the high mass yield obtainable at 40 per cent solid concentration.The drip system could therefore possibly offer a safe guarding against grade and solid concentration variations without using excessive water, and possibly ensure that a product within specification is maintained.CITATION:Ramotsabi, C M, Erasmus, W and Bornman, F, 2015. Can mining promote sustainable development? What is sustainable development? Is sustainable development good for corporate sustainability? Does it work in practice? If so, is it good for business? This paper does not seek to provide definitive answers to these issues. Rather, it is presented in the interests of sharing information and contributing to the pool of collective experience. The discussion will draw on the experience of Placer Dome in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Sustainable development means development that is maintained at a steady level without exhausting natural resources or causing ecological disturbance. The term æsustainable developmentÆ is often linked to the concept of ecological equilibrium, development that is self-replenishing. While its essential meaning remains the same, in practice, and for todayÆs complex and industrial world, different people will interpret sustainable development in different ways. Given the dynamics of development and the competing social, political and economic interests, sustainable development must be seen from a much broader perspective. This is the point that this paper will attempt to make. Mining, an activity that uses non-renewable resources, can promote sustainable development. The 1987 Brundtland Report (also known as the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development), defines sustainable development in a broader manner - as development that meets the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Elkington, 1997). This definition calls for inter-generational equity in the development and use of resources by many organisations, including multinational corporations. Corporate sustainability, on the other hand, is about developing strategies that guide a corporation to stay alive and, more importantly, to stay ahead of its competitors. It is basically about survival in a competitive social and commercial environment. In a corporate world, profitability is survival. In this context, corporate profitability, the main ingredient of corporate sustainability, is important for sustainable development. Without profits, corporations will find it difficult to practice sustainable development or indeed any development. Sustainable development can integrate mining activities with the rest of the community, add value and, in the long-term, profits to the bottom-line. Ultimately, sustainability will force corporations to adopt strategies based on a longer time scale to survive. In the mining sector, corporate sustainability depends on a close relationship with all stakeholders, particularly landowners for whom sustainable development is critically important. Increasingly, there is an acceptance of the view that success is not achieved simply through competition in price, cost and technology but, more importantly, through creating social infrastructure which support community ethics, norms and values essential for trust and partnership. Needless to say, mining companies that engage in appropriate community-based development in support of inter-generational justice recognise the true value of sustainability. This is sometimes called the æhuman sustainability approachÆ which underlines the critical significance of trust in relationships with stakeholders and continuous improvement of corporate capabilities directed towards the future (Dunphy and Griffiths, 1998). In the long-term, such development will enhance corporate public image and acceptability. In practice, both concepts can be built on the principles of economic viability, environmental quality and social justice -what, in todayÆs parlance, is increasingly becoming known as the ætriple-bottom-lineÆ approach to business (Elkington, 1997). Underpinning this approach is a process of continuing dialogue and co-operation between governments, non-government organisations (NGOs) and business.

Mining companies are moving towards automated haul trucks and other equipment. One reason for this is that if automated trucks can operate in a standard pattern over and over again without variation, then human error is reduced, if not eliminated.The challenge for mining production leaders/managers is to ensure operators follow standard operating procedures for load and dump operations, with each operator doing the same thing, every time. However, operators are only human and inconsistent performance is rife at every mine site. The finger may be pointed at the operators for not doing as instructed. The clarity and variability of trainer instructions may be considered causal to the problem. Herein lies the problem. Almost all operators believe they are following the procedure very closely; moreover, they all demonstrate a strong desire to conform to instruction.Using video analysis and feedback, each operator can be shown where and by how much they differ from the benchmark set by their company. Operators, often for the first time, can see definitively what they are doing, compared to industry best practice.The technology utilised by real-time video (RTV) crews measures time, distance and angles. It can overlay the video of the operator at the load site, with video of the perfect pass. Operators are amazed when they see how near to, or how far they are from best practice.The footage and data gathered by RTV assists operators in understanding exactly what adjustments are required to increase proficiency. It also assists load and dump superintendents to identify where in the process they are losing time. Herbert Stream, a tributary of the Waimangaroa River on the Stockton Plateau, has elevated metal concentrations and low pH characteristic of acid mine drainage (AMD). Dissolved aluminium concentrations average 8.3 ppm, iron 1.4 ppm, manganese 0.69 ppm, and zinc 0.12 ppm and pH ranges from 2.8 to 3.2. Flow rates range from 2.3 to 26.6 L/s with an average of 5.3 L/s. To determine the effectiveness of different treatment strategies, a small amount of the AMD was diverted through three small-scale passive AMD remediation systems over an eight month period. These included a reducing and alkalinity producing system (RAPS), a limestone leaching bed (LLB), and an open limestone channel (OLC). Both the RAPS and the LLB performed well, effectively removing metals and restoring pH. The RAPS lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 97%, manganese 95%, and zinc 80% and the LLB lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 99%, manganese 92%, and zinc 91%. The pH was restored to between 6.4 and 7.4 by the RAPS and to between 7.3 and 7.9 by the LLB. The OLC performed well as long as the residence time was similar to that of the other treatment systems. OLC removal rates for aluminium was up to 99%, iron 94%, and manganese 21%, and the pH was restored up to 5.6. Due to its simplicity and effectiveness, it is proposed the LLB be constructed to fullscale size to treat the entire Herbert Stream.

Dust mitigation has long been seen as nothing more than managing a nuisance issue, but the reality is that poor dust management can lead to one or more of the following negative consequences: an increased risk of safety incidents, lost revenue, reduced and possibly even lost licence to operate, regulatory intervention, high staff turnover and/or absenteeism and occupational health and safety (OH&S) issues. Dust mitigation and management is not a black art; rather it is a scientifically driven process that can provide an opportunity to increase profits, increase the companyÆs status as an excellent corporate citizen, enhance staff retention and reduce the safety risk profile of the operation.The way to achieve success in dust mitigation and control is to apply the scientific method to each problem that can arise and plague any operation by using current industry best practice. This method of dust problem-solving can be applied to dust issues arising from specific dust sources and locations. The dust sources can include wind impacting on stockpiles, open areas, tailings storage facilities, moving train and truck loads, vehicular traffic on roads, the operation of shovels, front end loaders, draglines and other equipment, as well as ore movement on conveyors.The solutions will come from a combination of deployment of dust collection equipment, dust and moisture monitoring equipment, the appropriate application of water and chemicals, the introduction and maintenance of appropriate barriers and the use of predictive data from local and public weather stations. The paradigm shift required is to view dust mitigation as one aspect of normal operational practice, not a ænice to haveÆ or æunnecessary expenseÆ as most operators currently view it. This attitude is becoming more important as more and more local communities oppose the development of mines. One of the reasons for this local opposition is the inevitable dusty environment that is usually associated with mining.Dust mitigation is not a significant expense if correctly designed and included into the system, either as part of the original design of the operation or as a brownfield installation after the fact. Indeed, there is always a loss of revenue associated with dustiness resulting from ore movement and avoiding this goes a long way to paying for any associated dust mitigating costs.CITATION:Visser, J, 2013. The carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process is now well established in the South African gold industry, with a total of over I million metric tons of material being treated each month in six large plants. This tonnage is derived from ground ore, from filtered pulp, from calcine, and from reclaimed sand-tailings dumps. With this new process and the new large plants, those concerned with CIP are experiencing a learning process, since each new plant presents a different set of problems to be overcome. The knowledge and experience gained from these plants is being shared, and will be of benefit in the design and operation of new plants. The CIP process can be subdivided into the following unit operations: prescreening at a fine size, adsorption, acid-washing and elution, reactivation, and electrowinning. Results concerning each of these unit operations, which were obtained from pilot plants and from large-scale CIP plants in South Africa, are presented. The latest developments in each of these areas is summarized. Tables that are included as an appendix contain some information concerning the equipment in these new CIP plants plus operating results from some plants.

The Dinkidi Cu-Au porphyry deposit is situated in the Caraballo Range of North Luzon, Philippines. Although comparatively small, Dinkidi has unusually high gold grades with drilling by Climax-Arimco Mining Corporation delineating a 110 Mt orebody at 1.2 g/t gold and 0.5 per cent copper. The magmatic-hydrothermal evolution of Dinkidi records a distinctive switch in mineralisation from an early orthoclase-dominated Au-rich assemblage, typical of alkaline porphyry systems, to a later quartz stockwork Au-Cu rich assemblage typical of most calc-alkaline to shoshonitic porphyry systems. The early orthoclase-dominated stage is associated with the intrusion and crystallisation of a variably-textured clinopyroxene-syenite dyke that contains high-grade (5 - 20 g/t) gold mineralisation. We consider this dyke to be a Cu-Au porphyry analogue to the pegmatites found in granitic systems. Dinkidi is hosted within the Early Miocene Didipio Igneous Complex. This alkaline igneous complex is comprised of early unmineralised gabbros (pyroxene-plagioclase cumulates), clinopyroxenites (pyroxene cummulates), diorites and monzodiorites that have been intruded by a large, weakly mineralised monzonite pluton. The Dinkidi deposit is located at the southern margin of the monzonite pluton. Mineralisation is hosted within a composite monzonite stock. Within the stock, an 800 metres by ~200 metres (plan section) elongate monzonite stock (Tunja Monzonite) predates and hosts the bulk of the Au-Cu mineralisation. This has been intruded by the thin (10 to 30 m wide), highly mineralised variably-textured magnetite- and clinopyroxene- phyric syenite pegmatite (the Balut Dyke). The youngest phases of the composite stock are leucocratic quartz-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) that grades texturally, in its core, into a post-mineralisation crystal-crowded quartz-syenite (Bufu Felsite). The late-stage Bufu Felsite is inferred to be the source of much of the Cu-Au mineralisation. The Didipio Igneous Complex has intruded a sequence of Late Oligocene alkaline andesitic lavas and volcaniclastics and overlying potassic dacitic lavas. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that the intrusions and the potassic dacite lavas in the surrounding region are co-magmatic. Five main stages of hydrothermal activity are recorded at Dinkidi. An unmineralised K-silicate (biotite-magnetite) alteration assemblage formed during the intrusion of the Tunja Monzonite stock. The diorites surrounding the stock display intense selectively pervasive biotite and magnetite alteration and are cut by an extensive network of orthoclase veins and monzonite dykes. The orthoclase-dominated assemblages of Stage Two carry substantial high-grade Au mineralisation and are associated with the intrusion of the Balut Dyke. The emplacement of this unusual dyke is associated with emplacement of pegmatitic clinopyroxene-orthoclase-magnetite¦sulphide dykes, localised orthoclase flooding along the margins of the dyke, and subsequent emplacement of an extensive orthoclase-actinolite-bornite¦chalcopyrite-fluorite stock-work, and development of widespread selectively pervasive actinolite alteration. The main stage of Au-Cu mineralisation at Dinkidi is intimately associated with the intrusion and initial crystallisation of the leuco-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) and emplacement of a quartz stockwork followed by carbonate-sulphide deposition and intense vein-related sericite and carbonate alteration assemblages. The quartz stockwork formed synchronous with the deposition of the æBugoy QuartzoliteÆ, a very coarse grained mosaic of quartz-orthoclase-perthite along the walls and top of the crystallising intrusion. Stage 3 was terminated by crystallisation of the distinctively vuggy Bufu quartz-syenite phase in the core of the intrusive, with associated antiperthite veins, and the subsequent explosive brecciation of the roof of the intrusion, forming a quartz-fragment breccia from the Bugoy Quartzolite. Retrograde metasomatism during Stage Four was intimately associated with the emplacement of extensive, late-stage carbonate, silica and zeolite veins and widespread selectively pervasive carbonate alteration. The last hydrothermal stage at Dinkidi, Stage 5, is comprised of strong selectively pervasive clay alteration and is associated with fault-related brecciation of the Dinkidi stock.

With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. In the year 1926, Edie Creek, in the Morobe District of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, saw the greatest gold rush of recent years. Situated 35 miles inland from the coast, and at an altitude of over 6000 feet, Edie Creek presented to the original prospectors a wet, jungle-clad uninhabited, and inhospitable region. There were no roads; and the only means of approach from the equally inhospitable coast was by an eight to ten days' tramp through coastal swamps and gorge-scarred mountains. All food supplies and equipment had to be carried on the backs of "kanakas," and in many cases through country occupied by hostile natives.Since the first discovery of payable gold at Edie Creek, mining on the Morobe Goldfield has shown remarkable progress, and in spite of the tremendous natural difficulties, the field today ranks as one of the most important in Australasia.Aeroplanes, more than any other factor, have been responsible for this rapid development. They provide the only means of transport from the coast, and at present serve the needs of over 600 Europeans and 3000 indentured native labourers engaged in the industry.

The Rosedale Outfall Project utilised an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) for only the second time in Auckland. Although the tunnel was excavated fully through East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF), the downhill gradient along with some unexpected areas of extreme water posed some significant challenges during construction.The Rosedale Waste Water Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel project was commissioned in response to the growing needs of North Shore City, New Zealand. The outfall tunnel comprises a 3 km long segmentally lined tunnel and a 2.1 km buried marine pipeline, and discharges 2.7 km offshore. The capacity of the new outfall is 6 m3/s compared to the existing outfall capacity of 1 m3/s.Following previous project experience, and with the tunnel located along its full length in the bedrock weak sandstone/siltstone bedrock of the East Coast Bays Formation, tunnelling conditions were expected to be benign. However during construction six high inflow events were encountered, including a full face (3.4 m diameter) of Albany Conglomerate over a 48 m length of tunnel. This material comprised cobbles in an uncemented sand matrix, and inflows were recorded at over 25 L/s.This paper describes the design challenges on the project including the design of a steel fibre reinforced segmental lining for internal pressures. The specification of the machine is discussed including the modifications required to enhance the risk mitigation measures already in place. The ground conditions encountered are discussed and have improved the knowledge of the range of conditions that can be expected in Auckland.Despite the challenges presented during construction, excellent progress rates were achieved and the tunnelling was successfully completed ahead of program.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an Iron oxide copper-gold sublevel cave mine located 30 minutes north of Cloncurry in North-West Queensland. The underground mine lies beneath open pit excavations, which were in operation from 1999 to 2011. Fault structures carry large quantities of water from the cover sequence aquifer into the underground mine area. The open cut excavations exacerbates vulnerability of the underground mine to the high intensity wet season storms of northern Queensland. These factors combine to make hydrogeological issues high priority for mine operation. Water-related risks include the cost of removing water from the mine, flooding risk and mud rush potential.Turnover of key technical staff in late 2015 at EHM resulted in the mine being left in an untenable position of losing the primary source of technical knowledge. Due to encouragement of cross-disciplinary activity coupled with workload and resource sharing, the management team were confident in utilising on-site personnel to offset loss of experienced personnel.Remaining geology personnel took additional responsibility for hydrogeological monitoring equipment and planning of upcoming work. Consultant input was limited to review only and an emphasis was placed on knowledge transfer to the geology team. Using this strategy, a 13 hole dewatering program was successfully implemented, achieving a significant water level drop in areas of elevated hydrological risk, whilst also upgrading the hydrological monitoring sensor array.Through a development program centred on cross-disciplinary exposure, the technical team was able to retain key technical knowledge despite staff turnover and produce strong results outside traditional training and roles.
