The piece of spiegeleisen, the analysis of which is given below, was collected by my father, together with various other specimens, while he was manager of the Glendon Iron Works. It bears a label stating that it was taken from a building in the town of Newton, New Jersey, erected in 1765 and torn down in 1863. The building belonged, in 1863, to T. N. McCarter, Esq. The label is in the hand-writing of Mr. McCarter, now deceased, well known as a member of the bar of northern New Jersey. The specimen was, no doubt, given by him to illy father, with whom he had business in 1863 and 1864. It is now in the metallurgical collection of Lehigh University. I know nothing further as to the history of the specimen, but there is no reasonable doubt that it was made from ore from the Andover mine, at the old charcoal-furnace which once stood at the village of Andover, about 5 miles south of Newton, on the Sussex railroad. It was probably broken from one end of a bearer over an open fire-place, is about 6 in. wide by 2.5 in. thick, has been cast in open sand and shows the charcteristic fracture of spiegeleisen rather low in manganese, as shown in Table I. This paper presents correlations for predicting the solu-lility, swelling and viscosity behavior of CO2-crude oil sys8i.m~. The correlations were developed from experimental data obtained by the authors. These data are also presented. The data were determined by measuring the properties of mixtures of CO, and nine different oils. Experiinental conditions covered a range of 100 to 250°F and pressures up to 2,300 psia. Properties predicted by the correlations have average deviations, expressed as per cent of experimental value, of 2 per cent for solubility, 0.5 per cent for swelling and 12 per cent for viscosity. INTRODUCTION Interest in CO2 injection as an oil recovery process has led to the development of performance prediction methods which can be applied to specific reservoirs.1 iS To use these performance prediction methods, it is necessary to know the solubility, swelling and viscosity properties of CO2-crude oil mixtures at reservoir conditions. Some information on these properties has appeared in the literature; however, this information did not cover the range of different oils and conditions needed to prepare generalized correlations for reservoir engineering purposes. Consequently, an experimental program was undertaken to collect the data needed. The data obtained and the correlations developed from the data are described in the following sections of this paper. SOLUBILITY OF CO2 IN CRUDE OILS CO2 solubility data in the literature come from six principal sources. The solubility prediction method of Welker and Dunlop3 is limited to 80F. The information in Ref. 4 is of two types: the first includes binary and ternary mixtures of CO, and light hydrocarbons (C1 to C6), and the second gives data for CO1 and heavy hydrocarbons for a temperature range of 40 to 90F. Ref. 5 contains a KCO2 chart for systems whose convergence pressure is 4,000 psia. The KCO2's are based mainly on CO2-natural gas mixtures. Poettmann's work covered CO2 solubility in one condensate and one crude oil6,7 Ja-coby and Rzasa measured CO? solubilities as a function of pressure and temperature for two natural gas-absorber oil mixtures and two natural gas-crude oil mixtures.'8 CO, concentration in these four systems was fixed at 5 mol per cent. The work reported in this paper extends CO, solubility data to a variety of different crude oil types in a temperature range from 110 to 250F and pressures up to 2,300 psia. The experimental procedure used by the authors to obtain the solubility data consisted of combining known amounts of pure CO, and crude oil in a visual cell at a fixed temperature and measuring the bubble point of the mixture. Measurements were made for a total of 40 different CO2-oil mixtures and the results are shown in Table 2. The mixtures included nine different oils (seven crude oils and two refined oils) whose properties are listed in Table 1. All nine oils had vapor pressures less than 1 atm at the experimental temperatures. Consequently, analysis of the bubble-point vapor showed a CO, concentration over 99 mol per cent. At no time during these experiments was a second, more dense, liquid phase observed. The solubility correlation which was developed from the data in Table 2 is presented in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. In these figures, solubility is expressed as xco2 the mol fraction of CO, in the CO2-oil mixture. Fig. 1 shows solubility as a function of CO2 fugacity6 and temperature. Fig. 2 shows the same solubility data expressed as a function of saturation pressure and temperature. The solubility shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is for an oil whose UOP characterization factor is 11.7. UOP characterization factors of crude oils can be determined from Ref. 10 if the viscosity and APT gravity of the oil are known. It is evident that lightweight concrete must have better qualities, and be sufficiently better to Overcome the higher cost and the other difficulties and disadvantages pertinent to the use of a new and different material in an old industry. Hence the study of its main ingredient should be of interest to all engineers. Our group has a double interest in the subject since most of the materials which have been used as sources of lightweight aggregate are either mined, Or are by-products of mining operations. We are directly interested in their production as well as their use, and since available supplies of materials suitable are limited, the increasing use, and rising demand, make the discovery of new Or or the development of processes to adapt other natural materials to this use, a promising field; and one in which our profession should take an active part. RESULTS of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., have been discussed by the writer in several recent papers. 1.2.3.1 In those papers references were also given to the work of Haigh in 1917.6 Efforts by the writer to obtain a better understanding of some of the factors involved in corrosion-fatigue finally developed into a general investigation of the effect of time and cyclic stress on corrosion of metals. Corrosion fatigue of Metals As described in the papers mentioned, rotating-cantilever specimens, conically tapered so that the stress is nearly uniform over a length of about 1.5 in., were subjected to simultaneous fatigue and corrosion. For this purpose a stream of water was diagonally applied so as to sweep the specimen from the outer to the inner fillet and surround the stressed surface with water. The fresh water is a calcium carbonate water, the composition of which has been given in a previous paper .2 The salt water is Severn River water having a saline content about one-third that of sea water. The previous papers described results obtained with ferrous and nonferrous metals. BaLatoc mine, the principal gold-producing mine in the Philippines, is 10 miles southeast of Baguio, in the Cordillera Central of northern Luzon.' The region is a deeply dissected plateau, ranging in altitude from 3000 to 5000 ft. above sea level. The rocks consist chiefly of granodiorite, diorite, and remnants of metamorphosed sediments, cut by dikes of andesite porphyry and quartz-diorite porphyry. All are intruded by a volcanic breccia plug, oval in horizontal section, about 3200 ft. long and 2300 ft. wide, which is the north central part of the mineralized area. Three main vein systems have been developed (Fig. I): 96, 231 and 364, which strike about N.70°E. and dip 50° to 90°S. Each system is a braided zone consisting of many individual components. They are disturbed by a series of premineral faults or shear zones striking about N.4s°E. Twelve of these produce important effects on the persistence, character, and quality of veins. From west to. east the faults are named (after claims): Hog, Big Gun, Bull, Pine, Lolita, Bar No. I, Bar No. 2, Curt, Sun, Helen, Itoe, and Frog. They are early breaks formed prior to the N.70°E. vein fractures. Mineralization occurs on them but, with several prominent exceptions, they are too low grade to mine. A number of northwesterly striking faults complete the structural pattern. Although they are relatively abundant, the effect on the veins is so small that they do not present any problems in mining or development. All of these faults that have been observed are later than the N.70°E. veins and offset them to the left. Northeast Faults The early northeast faults* are notably continuous in spite of their small displacements, 20 to 100 ft. Frequently they appear so weak that their importance is masked and their identity clouded. The gouge along any of these faults may vary from exceedingly weak at one point to very strong at another point only a short distance away. In other words, the amount of gouge depends on the changes of attitude of the fault plane, and is no indication of the extent of the movement. Places where walls are spread apart are filled with gouge squeezed from tight places. Also, mineralization sometimes obscures fault gouges by replacement. INCREASING demand for improved strength-weight ratios made on aircraft structures has resulted in a gradual increase in the tensile strength requirements for steels used in such applications. As the cyclic loads often are more critical than static loads, and the fatigue properties are generally the design criteria, the question arises as to whether an improvement in fatigue properties accompanies the increased tensile strength. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the relationship between fatigue and tensile properties for an aircraft quality steel in the 155 to 280 ksi (1000 psi) tensile strength range, using the Prot method of fatigue testing. Procedure and Results After preliminary work to establish proper heat treating procedures for this heat of aircraft quality electric furnace steel (a Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel," AMS- Prot Fatigue Testing Method—The determination of the endurance limit by the conventional Wohler method can be time-consuming and easily require 20 specimens when statistical variance is to be established. This is also true when endurance limit loads are determined on actual parts or subassem-blies, and the desirability of a reliable accelerated method has been evident for some time. The primary advantage of the Prot method of fatigue testing is in reducing the number of specimens and the time required for each test. Unlike the Wohler method, every Prot specimen tested con- tributes to the determination of the endurance limit, and the authors have been able to duplicate Wohler results obtained with 20 specimens with only half the specimens and a fourth of the total cycles. This new technique for defining the endurance limit was proposed in 1948' by Marcel Prot and consists of progressively increasing cyclic stress until fatigue failure occurs. During the latter part of 1916 and the early months of 1917, due to war activities, there was a threatened shortage of coal which resulted in panic among consumers and a rush to obtain coal at once at any price. As a result of this insistent demand for immediate delivery, prices were bid up by the consumers to unprecedented heights; spot coal which had previously been selling at from $1.50 to $2 per ton was bid up to $5, $6, and, in exceptional cases, as high as $7.50 or more per ton. Then when the April, 1917, contract period arrived, contracts could be made only at prices ranging from $3 up to $5 and $6 per ton for the year's delivery. This condition caused such a demoralization of the business, and SO much complaint, that some action to regulate prices was considered essential by the National Administration. Lane-Peabody Agreement In May, 1917, a committee under the chairmanship of F. S. Peabody, of Chicago, was appointed by the Council of National Defense, through Mr. Lane, to consider the whole question of bituminous coal. This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

The meeting of the Board of Directors, on November 22, was attended by eight directors, the Secretary of the Institute, and eight guests. The proposed James Douglas Prize and Tablet was referred to a committee of eleven. Robert H. Richards was appointed representative of this Institute to attend the meeting of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education. J. V. N. Dorr was made chairman of the Finance Committee in place of George D. Barron, resigned. The sum of $200 was appropriated for the 1918 expense of the American Engineering Standards Committee; the question of an appropriation for 1919 was referred to the Executive Committee for study and report. The sum of $50 was appropriated to the Treasurer's clerk. The following representatives of the Institute were elected: W. L. Saunders to succeed himself as United Engineering Society Trustee; R. M. Raymond to succeed himself as member of Engineering Foundation Board; S. J. Jennings to succeed himself as member of Engineering Council; George F. Kunz to succeed himself as member of Engineering Council; C. F. Rand to succeed himself as member of John Fritz Medal Board of Award; E. Gybbon Spilsbury to succeed himself as member of the Library Board. To members of the Canadian Mining Institute residing in Canada or Newfoundland, the privilege was extended to subscribe to the Bulletin at the price of $5. An invitation was extended to the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America to consolidate with the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The appointment of Engineering Societies' Employment Bureau was reported. Thirty-nine members and ten associates were elected. Two members were reinstated. Extension of time for the payment of clues was granted to four members. Seventeen members on active duty at the front had their dues remitted.

Some of the basic problems in understanding elec-tromigration in metals are discussed, along with the attempts that are being made to handle them. One such problem is the effect of the electrostatic forces. It is now acknowledged that the momentum exchange with charge carriers plays generally a dominant role in the driving force but the question remains to what extent the electrostatic force may still be effective. The electromigration of interstitial impurities is also an area which presents some intriguing questions. For the substitutional impurity, moving by the vacancy mechanism under the influence of an electric field, the correlation considerations are somewhat more complex than have been previously recognized. Another problem of basic importance in the calculution from first principles is the strength of the "electron friction" force, say for a simple one-band metal. A related problem growing out of the preceding is the prediction of the direction of the "electron wind" force for metals with band structure involving both holes and electrons. THE term electromigration has come to be used to describe the flow of matter in condensed phases carrying high electronic currents such as metals and alloys, whereas one usually reserves the term electrolysis for situations where the current is largely ionic, particularly in the liquid state such as molten salts. It follows that the mass transport number in electromigration is always very small, of the order of 10-7. Studies of electromigration date back some 30 years but the modern period would appear to date from the work of Seith and Wever1 who in the mid 1950's first incorporated markers to display mass motion relative to the lattice and first suggested that the direction of the mass flow was primarily determined by the sign of the charge carriers. Since that time interest in the field has grown steadily and more rapidly recently as certain technological applications became apparent. Chief of these is certainly the deleterious effects that electromigration can cause, even at relatively low temperature, to current-carrying elements in integrated circuitry.2 These phenomena have been the subject of intense study and considerable ingenuity. On the constructive side electromigration has proved a useful tool in the purification of certain metals.3 The interest of this paper is, however, centered more on the basic aspects of the subject than on its technological applications. That high electric currents should give rise to mass flow in metals and that the driving force should be more directly associated with momentum exchange with the charge carriers than with the electrostatic field are ideas that no longer cause surprise or particular interest. The field has matured to the point where the general concepts are widely accepted and continued progress in basic understanding rests on more detailed and quantitative exploration. It is the purpose of this paper to point out what are some of the current problems. As a result, we expect to raise more questions than we answer. The first of these will be the role of electrostatic forces, if any, in electromigration. A second section will deal with the electromigration of interstitials. A third and final section treats with electromigration of substitutional impurities or of the matrix atoms themselves. ELECTROSTATIC DRIVING FORCE In the conceptual treatments of electromigration it has been customary to write the driving force in terms of an effective charge number Z* and to divide it into two terms F = e£Z* = e£[Zel- z(pd/Nd)(N/p)(m*\m*\)] [1] The first of these represents the electrostatic force under immediate consideration in this section and the second and usually dominating term for metals arises from momentum exchange with charge carriers, commonly called the "electron drag" term. As can be seen it is set proportional to the electrons per atom, z, and the ratio of the specific resistivity of the moving entity to the corresponding resistivity per matrix atom. The (m*/Im*I) factor takes into account the fact that the sign of the charge carrier determines the sign of the driving force. The specific resistivity of the moving entity is averaged over its path. In the case of motion of the matrix atoms by vacancies this gives rise to approximately one-half the resistivity at the saddle point since the scattering power of the atom at its equilibrium position bordering the vacancy differs only slightly from that of a normal matrix atom. Although the formulation of the "electron drag" term in Eq. [I] is based on a highly simplified model for electron defect scattering, the essential features implicit in the expression are common to all the theoretical approaches that have so far appeared in the literature.4-6 As for Zel, most treatments of electromigration have included the quantity as the parameter which measures the direct interaction of the electrostatic field with the ion and equated it to the nominal valence of the latter. However, there has been considerable discussion whether this interaction may not be 0 in many cases.6 If the moving ion is always enveloped by the same distribution of shielding charge, then clearly its motion will not involve any work done by the electric field and one can expect there will be no electrostatic force exerted on such a neutral composite. From this point of view the shielding charge around the ion would be said to be complete and hence the entity within the Debye shielding sphere would be unaffected by the electrostatic field per se. There is, however, the prospect that, as the moving ion progresses, new charge comes in to participate in the shielding action

It docs not seem to be generally known that some American pig-irons contain notable amounts of vanadium, and while the present investigation is far from covering the whole range of irons, it is hoped that, at least, it may serve to call attention to the importance of looking for this element. The majority of the pig-irons investigated were made in the Lehigh Valley and neighboring furnaces, using more or less New Jersey magnetite in their mixtures. Many of these ores, and probably all of them, contain a little vanadium as well as titanium; the ore from one of the largest of these mines contains 0.05 per cent, of vanadium and 0.60 per cent. of titanium. Dr. Thomas M. Drown was the first to detect the presence of vanadium in the incrustations1 occurring on certain pig-irons, and he also found this element in a number of magnetites, but the methods for its accurate determination had not, at that time, been well worked out. In a general way, it may be said that the Lehigh Valley pig-irons contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent. of vanadium and from 0.10 to 0.20 per cent. of titanium. These elements follow the silicon; that is, the furnace-conditions which produce a high-silicon, low-sulphur iron will cause the maximum reduction of vanadium and titanium, and

Tsumeb has added a chapter to its absorbing history with the beginning of copper smelting operations this month. This development will be followed shortly by another one when lead smelting and refining plants go on the line next year. In our own milieu these events would be common- place enough (although a new lead smelter certainly would be cause for wonder), but in the sparsely settled remote regions of northern South West Africa they are a dramatic industrial expansion. They are also, however, a sound businesslike extension of policies which have marked the tenure of Tsumeb Corp. Ltd. The historical data given in Table I are a drab listing of factual bones without the corporeal splendor which should surround the denouement of the Tsumeb bonanza. When Sir Francis Galton traversed the country, his was an expedition which was in keeping with the then blooming era of heroic explorations. The Otavi highlands in the interior were unexplored and the reception of the natives uncertain. While the exploratory work was in progress during the turn of the century the Hottentots and Hereros were successively in open bloody rebellion. The suppression of these uprisings, particularly the Hereros, by German soldiers so decimated the tribes that a labor shortage ensued for many years, hampering the development of the colony. To these troubles may be added difficulties In obtaining mining supplies. However, there should have been no shortage of meat from wild game judging by conditions prevailing even today.

THE development of the modern blast furnace began more than one hundred years ago, with the abandonment of the small hillside furnaces. Its development, especially during the past 50 years, has been accomplished through a rapid succession of enlargements and improvements. The remarkable growth in furnace output during this period is a tribute to the engineers and operators who have constantly endeavored to build larger and more efficient blast furnaces. The blast-furnace operators and their mechanical and electrical maintenance staffs have originated most of the furnace improvements as a result of their practical operating experience. FURNACE LINES About 50 years ago furnaces consisted of hearths about 11 ft. in diameter, which merged into rather high flat boshes, with no cylindrical section between the bosh and inwall and no cylindrical section at the stock line. Since then the lines of the furnace invariably have included a cylindrical section above the bosh and a cylindrical section at the stock line. Notable increases have been made in both hearth diameters and furnace heights. During the past 10 years hearth diameters in new and replaced furnace stacks have rather consistently fallen within the range of 25 to 28 ft. while their heights have varied between 100 and 106 ft. The lines of most large furnaces using Mesabi ores have followed a fairly uniform pattern (Fig. I) in which the principal dimensions for 25-ft. hearth furnaces are as follows: [Hearth diameter 25 ft. o in. Height of bosh 10 ft. o in. Bosh angle 8 1 ½° Diameter top of bosh 28 ft. o in. Inwall batter per foot 15/16 Stock-line diameter 19 ft. 6 in. Large-bell diameter 14 ft. 6 in. Height from iron notch to top ring casting 100 ft. o in.] In determining the size of a new furnace for the replacement of an existing stack or for an addition to productive capacity, it is not possible to formulate a procedure that can always be followed. Local conditions, requirements as to capacity, available raw materials and prospects for future expansion dictate the size of such proposed improvements or additions. However, where the immediate requirements indicate a stack or furnace of a certain productive capacity, and the future prospects indicate that more capacity can be utilized, it is well to consider building the furnace for the ultimate capacity rather than to install a smaller hearth with provision for future enlargement. The decision to build the larger hearth and stack for the ultimate capacity probably will require no greater initial investment, since the saving in the cost of brickwork will about offset the greater cost of the hearth jacket, tuyere breast and bosh bands. In the meantime, the furnace of larger hearth dimensions, while operating below its ultimate output, will yield a better coke rate and

IN preparing material for the exhibit of the National Museum at the New Orleans Exposition in 1881, it was decided to attempt to photograph the interior of a coal-mine, in order to get a strictly truthful representation of a thick coal-seam, and to show incidentally the methods of mining. While we have many drawings, both mechanical and artistic, illustrating the subject, they are not satisfactory for these purposes, simply because they are drawings. Aside from this, much interest attaches to pictures of inaccessible places, and the enlarged copies (30 inches by 40 inches) of the photographs we succeeded in obtaining, have attracted a large amount of attention from the visitors to the Museum. The Kohinoor colliery, Shenandoah City, Pa., was selected as most suitable for the attempt, principally on account of the fine exposure of the Mammoth bed, and the comparatively level character of the workings, in that colliery. This is one of the many anthracite-mines of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company. A detailed section of the fiftyfoot or Mammoth bed in this colliery is as follows: Feet. WHILE electric lamps both of the cap and hand type are being introduced into many mines requiring the use of safety lamps, the oil-burning safety lamp is still used in the great majority of cases, and even where the former are used the latter must continue to be employed when testing for gas. It is not the intention to discuss here the relative merits of the two types, but simply to give a comparison of the illuminating effect or candlepower of several kinds of ordinary safety lamps used for general work and for testing. Few data have been published in recent years on this subject and because of this it is hoped that the following information may be of some interest and value. The lamps tested were in all cases. of standard size and in good condition, all practically new, and were selected from a collection of about 100 with a view to obtaining results on as many different common types as possible. With the exception of the gasoline-burning lamps, five different oils were used in each lamp to determine whether -particular oils were suited to particular lamps and whether there was any great difference in the illuminating power of the different oils, or whether some oils would maintain their illuminating power better than others throughout a working period of 8 hr. No attempt was made to determine the amount or cost of oil burned by each lamp, but the condition of the lamp, wick, glass, and gauzes was noted after each test.

The Alabama flake-graphite industry has flourished only in times of war when importations of foreign graphite for crucible use have been greatly curtailed or cut off. World War I was a boom period and in 1918 some 30 plants produced 7,795,475 Ib. of flake graphite. The industry languished following the war and no graphite was produced from 1929 to 1939. The Federal Bureau of Mines began investigating the Alabama graphite deposits in 1940 and worked out modern recovery methods that were applied to production during part of World War 11. A prospecting program disclosed reserves of over 25 million tons of graphtic schists. In 1942 the War Production Board authorized the enlargement of the only plant then producing flake graphite and the construction of two new plants. Production of flake graphite from these three plants in 1943 is estimated at 8,100,000 lb. Increased imports from Madagascar late in 1943 shut down one of the new plants and curtailed production at the other. Alabama flake graphite has not yet been able to compete with Madagascar graphite for use in the manufacture of any but small graphite crucibles. The future of the industry must depend on meeting the higher carbon content demanded for other uses. Introduction The flake-graphite deposits of Alabama are confined to a narrow belt extending for about 60 miles southwest from the northeast corner of Clay County across Coosa County to the edge of the Coastal Plain in Chilton County (Fig. I). The continuity of the beds is broken by a 10-mile gap between Millerville in Clay County and Goodwater in Coosa County. The Clay County beds extend about 27 miles northwest of this gap, with a width of 3 to 4 miles near Millerville and of less than a mile at the northeast end. The Coosa-Chilton are? is about 33 miles long with a fairly consistent width of 2 to 3 miles. Geologically the graphite belt lies near the northeast boundary of the outcrop of metamorphic rocks of the Ashland series, a complex group of intensely folded and faulted beds of pre-Cambrian age composed mostly of quartz-mica schist, in which the mica is predominantly muscovite; garnet-mica schist, in which biotite is more common; and hornblende schist. Flake graphite is found in commercial quantities only in the quartz-mica schist. The best graphite, both in quantity and quality, is found in schist cut by numerous small pegmatite stringers along the planes of the schistosity. The pegmatites themselves contain little graphite, but the adjacent country rock is normally rich. . The schist was derived through the recrystallization of shale during the intrusion of the pegmatites, the graphite being derived from amorphous carbon in the shale. The intrusion of the pegmatites, and therefore the size and quantity .of the graphite flakes, seems to have a structural control.

The cementation of nickel from acidic solutions by metallic iron is discussed. The cementation is carried out in pressure vessels at temperatures above 100°C. The results from bench scale studies on variables such as retention time, temperature, and solution pH are presented. A continuous processing flowsheet is proposed. Cementation is one of the oldest known hydrometal-lurgical reactions. The cementation of copper on iron was recorded by 'Paracelsus the Great' in about 1500,1 and by 1600 the technique was being used to recover copper at the Rio Tinto operations in Spain.2 At least one early author felt that cementation may have been one of the primary reasons for the alchemists' belief in the transmutation of metals.' The early writings state that when iron was placed in the clear waters from some mountain springs, the iron disappears and copper is found in its place. To the alchemists this may well have been one of the most convincing proofs that transmutation could and did occur. Since these early times the recovery of copper from acidic solutions by cementation has been practiced in plants throughout the world. Probably the cementation technique in some form has been common to more copper mining and milling operations than any other single recovery process. During current hydrometallurgical extraction studies, which were sponsored by the Republic Steel Corp. at the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation, Inc., it was found that under the proper conditions, metallic nickel could be cemented from acidic solutions by powdered iron. The reactions are apparently similar to those that occur during the cementation of copper, but the nickel cementation had not been anticipated because iron and nickel are nearly adjacent in the electromotive series. The potential difference between iron and copper is approximately 0.78 v, while the potential difference between iron and nickel is less than 0.21 v. The cementation of nickel with iron at room temperature is almost negligible, but when the reaction is carried out in a closed vessel at temperatures in excess of 100°C, the nickel can be cemented almost quantitatively. The part played by this discovery in a practical method of nickel recovery is set forth in a separate paper.3 The following paragraphs are a discussion of experimental studies that were made to investigate this cementation reaction. The technique has been designated the HTC or High Temperature Cementation procedure. The cementation work was part of a study on hydrometallurgical techniques for the extraction of nickel from the garnierite or silicate type nickel ores. A hydrothermal extraction procedure had been developed, and this technique produced an acidic pulp or solution that contained both nickel and appreciable amounts of magnesium.3 Small quantities of ferric and ferrous iron were also present along with cobalt, manganese, and chromium. The potential for recovering the nickel from these acidic solutions by ion exchange or solvent extraction did not appear to be promising because of the relatively high magnesium content. The Ni ++ and Mg++ have nearly identical ionic dimensions and tend to be co-absorbed or extracted during ion exchange or solvent extraction treatments. Preliminary tests indicated that the nickel could be precipitated as a sulfide when using the high pressure H2S precipitation technique developed for the Moa Bay operations of the Freeport Nickel CO.4 This technique gave good recoveries, but the nickel sulfide product requires considerable additional processing before a marketable form of nickel is realized. The process also requires clarified feed solutions, and the solids-liquid separations on the garnierite residues are difficult. A program was initiated to investigate alternate procedures that might shorten the route to a marketable nickel product, and hopefully also permit bypassing the difficult solids-liquid separation steps required for the H2S precipitation technique. It was during these studies that the nickel cementation reaction with iron was encountered.
