THE characteristics and uses of thermocouples of platinum and the platinum alloys being so well known, this paper will be confined to base-metal couples. During the past decade, there has developed a strong demand for thermocouples made of metals cheaper than the platinum alloys, and suitable for industrial heat measurements. Much research has been clone but only a very limited number of alloys have been found to possess the necessary characteristics for general technical use. In the development of thermocouple alloys it is necessary to consider the following points: The electromotive force and temperature relations; permanency or constancy; reproducibility; manufacturing difficulties; durability; and accuracy in use. The electromotive force developed by the thermocouple should increase with the rise of temperature according to some definite law. It is desirable that the electromotive force should vary directly with the temperature difference of its junctions, in other words, giving a curve linear or nearly so. It is also desirable that the resulting electromotive force be as large as possible for any given range of temperature, thereby insuring greater accuracy of readings.

In many years' experience as a maker and purchaser of cast-iron coated pipe, I have never met with any standard form of specifications for such. Each water-works company, employing a hydraulic engineer, has, under his direction, prepared complete specifications for the particular conditions required; but I cannot find that any two are alike; and each foundry, in bidding for the supply of such pipe, makes the price to cover the conditions' required. I, therefore, have the honor of offering to the Institute a form of specifications for cast-iron coated water-pipe, that may be found useful to water-works companies and others requiring pipe of this kind. The conditions are all reasonable, and can be carried out by makers without additional cost, and with advantage to the purchaser. Section 1 gives the kind of pipe, with its general characteristics. Section 2 specifies that neutral pig-iron shall be used, since such iron possesses the strength required, and is uniform in its shrinkage. The usual hand-operated drilling outfit consists of a 4-in. post-hole auger with 3/4,-in. pipe for drill stem, in 4-ft lengths, with a turning handle fitted to a top pipe T. The auxiliary tools are: a chisel-bit drill made from 3/4 or 7/8-in. tool steel welded to a 4-ft length of 3/4-in, pipe, so that the regular pipe string can be used; also a churn or "mule foot" made from 3-in. pipe, slotted on one side, belled to a 4-in. tempered cutting edge on the bottom, all welded to a 3/4-in. coupling by a yoke. Other tools required are pipe wrenches and cleanout tools made from old auto springs (Fig I). A 4 1/2 or 5-in. collar welded to a plate is often used to protect the mouth of the drill hole. In general the auger is used in the typical clay overburden and brown phosphate matrix, which is relatively soft. The churn or "mule foot1' is used in hard pan, lump phosphate or cherty ground. The drill is used for breaking flint, often found loose in the overburden. The drill with the chisel bit is used for trimming sides of the hole, sounding for lime bottom and breaking through hard lumps. Holes have been drilled to a depth of 80 ft, but the limit of efficient operation is about 50 ft. In deep holes it is necessary to unscrew the string in 20-ft lengths, to

Tests of the MRDE firedamp prediction method have been carried out in a number of longwall districts with different conditions. The method itself and its development have been described previously At many test sites the prediction has been good, i.e. the calculated gas emission levels have agreed with measured values, averaged over a period of many weeks, within a few percent. In other cases, where there have been larger discrepancies between calculation and measurement, investigations have shown that these may be attributed to particular conditions of mining or geology. Recognition of these conditions in advance of mining is clearly desirable to improve the accuracy of the initial prediction. It has been shown that variations in gas emission rates depend largely on coal production in terms of the weekly advance of the coal face. Although there appears to be a random element present, variations in gas emission levels calculated from changing face advances agree well with measurement. The accuracy of prediction therefore depends on how well face advance can be forecast and needs to be updated as the working proceeds in the light of the face performance actually achieved. Continuous monitoring of the mine environment provides the information necessary to compare actual gas emission with predicted levels, and computerised systems make it possible to carry this out in real time. Predictions can thus be adjusted to take account of emission levels measured in previous weeks These adjustments, whether they are made after the first few weeks or subsequently during the district life, would also be used to alert management to particular abnormalities or significant changes in gas emission.

As the main source of indigineous energy, coal has a big role to play in the development of national economy of India. Nationalization of the coal mining has brought the entire industry under the unit control of the Central Government following which an ambitious plan for increasing the coal production in the next few five year plans has been undertaken. In order to achieve best all round results, economy-mathematical models of Planning the total system, right from the highest to lowest hierarchial levels of decision making, have been proposed through a Global Model which is detailed in Local Models in stages right up to a mine. Optimum obtained by computer solution of the models would provide basis for objective decision making in the fields of selection of optimum plan for developing the industry, the coal fields and the mines with construction and/or reconstruction of mines, capacity optimization of enterprises and mines therein. Different types of Models and the optimization processes are presented.

During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex., local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed, it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between the leach solutions and the copper-bearing ma.teria1 determines recovery. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers) and mathematical or laboratory model studies, but they have not proved completely satisfactory. The investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drillholes, which are subsurface techniques used in petroleum exploration and development for locating fluids and measuring porosity. A significant advantage of radiation logging is that, unlike other types of logging, measurements may be made in cased holes, since gamma rays and neutrons will penetrate steel and cement. Three techniques are currently used at Chino: Natural gamma ray logging; neutron-neutron, or moisture logging; and gamma-gamma, or bulk density logging.

Laboratory and field tests have shown that it is feasible to log for copper in a qualitative way using the techniques of neutron activation analysis. Laboratory tests showed that the 0.51 and 1.04 mev gamma rays of 62Cu and 66Cu, respectively, could be diagnostic. However, in the core holes, the detection of copper was limited to 0.3% concentration because of interferences from the 18Si and Al gamma rays. Both stationary and continuous logs were made, but only the stationary data yielded a recognizable copper response. This response consists of a combination of two effects-the direct response from copper at 0.51 mev and an increase in low energy gamma ray absorption due to mineralization. Both low energy chemical (PuBe) and high energy accelerator neutron sources were used for the laboratory and field tests, while the same 2 X 5 in. Nal scintillation detector served for all the tests. Potential improvements in copper detection might be possible with solid state gamma-ray detectors which have better gamma ray resolution but much less detection efficiency. This type of activation logging requires complex equipment and trained personnel to conduct field operations and may find application where coring is difficult or prohibitive.

SIXTY-FIVE million net tons of coal were carbonized in the by-product and beehive coke ovens1 of the United States during 1924. This tonnage represented 13.4 per cent. of the bituminous coal which was mined in that year. American coals have a wide range of purity and coking quality, and the chief subject of this paper will be the selection of coals for the manufacture of blast furnace, foundry, domestic, and water-gas coke, in by-product coke ovens. It will obviously be necessary to include a discussion of those physical and chemical characteristics that are generally considered essential or desirable for each type of coke.

At today's mineral prices, unproductive or low productive work in any underground mine must be kept at a minimum to insure a profit. Improper level and raise spacing can be one of the contributing factors to high production costs, and little can be done to reduce these costs after the spacing interval has been chosen. The objective in selecting level spacing is to find the most desirable interval which produces ore at the least cost per ton while still operating within the highest margins of safety and efficiency to the workmen. In addition, maximum possible recovery of ore under the conditions must be attained.

IN the early stages of a titanium brazing investigation, binary titanium systems partially or completely known and fundamental metallurgical data were surveyed to select the pure metal most likely to be satisfactory for producing a ductile high strength joint. The phase diagrams for the purpose of this survey were classified into two groups: 1—systems with large solubility in ß titanium, but negligible solubility in a titanium, and 2—systems with large solubility in a titanium. Those metals with melting points believed to be too high or too low for titanium brazing (Tim = 1730°C) were eliminated from consideration. The melting points of vanadium, tungsten, tantalum, hafnium, zirconium, and the platinum group are too high and those of zinc, lead, cadmium, and tin are too low. The remaining metals were grouped as follows: 1—large ß solubility: Cr,¹ Mn,² Fe;³ CO,4 Ni,5 Cu,6 Be,' Si." —large a solubility: Al.9

With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel framework buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements became more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as compared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter' listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft. Geology Perlite is one of the large family of rocks originating from a granitic or acidic magma and generally has a "rhyolitic composition with a marked perlitic structure."² The name "perlite" is a derivation from "perlstein" originally given "to certain glassy rocks (hyaloliparites, hyalo-rhyolites) with numerous concentric cracks, from the fancied resemblance of broken out fragments to pearls."3 The cause of the perlitic texture is somewhat controversial. Johannsen attributes the texture to strain set up in the glass by cooling and describes the finding of peculiar, glassy balls, called marekanite, more or less rounded and showing concave indentations, which may be left when perlite is broken. Frank Rutley, on the other hand, in 1881, while working on vitreous rocks from Montana, observed that there was incipient or partially started crystallization with segregation of water toward the un-crystallized portion in all specimens of perlite examined. Further he observed evidence of strain around focii of crystallization to which he ascribed the development of the spherical cracking which gives the rock its perlitic texture.4 Widespread over the western and southwestern United States where Tertiary vulcanism is exposed, perlite commonly is associated with andesitic, basaltic, and rhyolitic lavas with inter-bedded tuffs and ash of Eocene age although some deposits are associated with rocks assigned to the Pliocene age.5, 6 n nearly all cases the perlite overlies water laid tuff beds or agglomerates or breccias of explosive nature, an outstanding exception being the occurrence of perlite as the chilled selvage of andesite intrusions.7'8 Available chemical analyses of per-lites from the western and southwestern United States indicate that they are varieties of leucorhyolites rather than of normal rhyolites, leucorhyolites having less than 5 pct of dark minerals, normal rhyolites having more than 5 pct. This conforms with Johannsen's observation that leucorhyolites are the prevailing kind in North America.9 Tables 1 and 2 give

We are living at a period of the world's history in which social phenomena are on so vast a scale, are of so profoundly soul-searching a nature, and are occurring in such rapid succession in the great world drama in which we are both actors and spectators, that, in our efforts to obtain a rational point of view in relation to them, our minds may fail to discern the simple in the complex and our understanding is liable to become confused or even overwhelmed. To the social student whose: scientific training has convinced him of the truth of the evolutionary law, Natura non facit salium, it is neither the vast scale of the events, their deeply soul-stirring nature, nor their rapid succession that matters so much, as the discovery of the underlying principle or law in accordance with which the disintegration and reintegration, which are the two aspects of social evolution, or indeed of evolution everywhere, are occurring. He is most deeply concerned in seeking an answer to the question: Have we in the present great and perplexing upheavals in human society, whether regarded in Central Europe, in Russia, in Great Britain, or in America, a really new cause at work, or, have we, though on a very large scale, merely new manifestations of the working out of an old principle? When we think of the appalling struggle in Europe, into which the world's greatest exemplar of democracy was finally drawn, no one has any hesitation in admitting that the great conflict was fundamentally a life-and-death struggle for self-preservation and self-propagation on the part of autocracy. The variations we meet with in the statement of the cause of the war arise mainly from differing distances of perspective; but in the last analysis all agree that the autocratic system of political gov ernment, which found its very soul and center in Prussian despotism, was consciously arrayed in a final "world-power-or-downf all" struggle against a love of freedom which was steadily widening and deepening throughout the world, and particularly throughout those parts of the world where this love of freedom and justice hasfound expressionin democratic institutions. Geotechnical site investigation for new mine shafts can reduce the level of design uncertainty for shaft linings. The parameters which determine the lining strength required include rock strength and hydrologic properties, the in situ stress conditions, and the concrete strength. These parameters are applied to analytical methods of shaft lining design using the plastic and clastic assumptions of rock response to determine the required lining thickness to maintain the stability of the shaft excavation.
