VESTA No. 4 and 5 mines supply most of the high volatile coal required for Jones & Laughlin's byproduct coke plants. Until 1944 all coal produced in these mines was loaded by hand. Pressure to mechanize at Vesta was brought on by the manpower shortage in World War 11, and in 1943 a decision was made to change to mechanical loading. It was the opinion of those concerned that by use of selective mining the coal would be clean enough to be processed by the existing preparation plants. At that time coal cleaning at Jones & Laughlin consisted of hand picking the larger sizes at the mine tipples and wet washing at plants located at the Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works. A typical section of the Pittsburgh seam as it occurs at Vesta is shown in Fig. 1. The 14 to 16 in. of drawslate immediately over the coal is too soft to be used for roof and must be taken down, leaving the rooster coal just above for roof. In selective mining an attempt is made to mine the coal under the drawslate first and then load out the drawslate separately as refuse. In full seam mining slate and coal are shot down at the same time and loaded out. Mechanical loading at Vesta created new problems. It was found that selective mining, even when carefully applied, increased the refuse in the raw coal to such an extent that the washers at the mills were unable to handle it. Large tonnages of refuse were being transported, a reject disposal problem was created, and good metallurgical coal was being loaded out and lost. In addition, the selective method handicapped operation of the loading machines. Fig. 2 shows how the ash content of the raw coal increased as mechanization proceeded at No. 5 mine. New Preparation Plant: After an exhaustive study of this situation by J & L management, is was decided that a preparation plant should be constructed at the mines, capable of handling full seam mined coal and large enough to process full production of both No. 4 and No. 5 mines. It was decided that from the standpoint of inside operation and haulage the new plant should be located as near as possible to the old No. 5 tipple on the Monongahela River near Vestaburg. Full seam mining at Vesta could be expected to produce a tremendous volume of refuse along with the coal, since 14 to 16 in. of slate would be mined with an average 78 in. of coal. Disposal of this refuse required serious consideration in selecting a plant site. The only area near Vestaburg large enough for disposal of the plant refuse was across the Monongahela River at LaBelle. Ample space was available here, and construction at this location would not interfere with operation at the No. 5 tipple. It had been noted over the years that the sulfur content of the coal produced at Vesta was gradually increasing, and there was every indication that this increase could be expected to continue as the mines developed further from the river. It was decided to construct a three-part separation plant with complete blending facilities to produce both metallurgical and steam coal. In this system an attempt is made to reduce the sulfur in the metallurgical coal in a secondary cleaning process. Construction of the new preparation plant got under way early in 1947 and continued until the spring of 1950. The plant was designed to handle 2400 tph of raw coal containing 30 to 35 pct refuse. Cost of outside buildings and equipment was about $14 million. Total cost of the plant, together with improvements and changes made at this time, was approximately $21 million.

Forty oilfield brines have been examined so far by a polarographic technique new in petroleum engineering called the "tensatnmetric method" by the team of biochemists who perfected its use in their field. Samples of brine were obtained from various oil fields in which the wells were known to be producing fluid from oil productive zones in well-known geologic formations. Most of the reservoirs from which the samples were obtained are believed to have an active water drive under the prevailing conditions of operation. The 40 samples represent brines produced front 16 different formations of various geologic ages. Graphs have been prepared of the data obtained in the testing of each sample, and the distinctive waife-like curves so obtained are characterized by reproducible profiles, called "response curves." Careful comparison of the response curves of salt water coming from different fields producing from the same geologic formation reveals that the curves are similar. The response curves of salt water coming from productive zones of different geologic formations are characteristically different. Preliminary work offers the further hope that response curves of an oilfield brine indigenous to a particular oil-bearing formation and hence representative of a particular geologic environment, such as deposit-ional and all subsequent morphological conditions, may be of value in reservoir engineering in the interpretation of surface and interfacial phenomena. For example, the wettability of the rock matrix and more specifically, the classification of productive oil-bearing strata as hydrophyllic or hydrophobic may be determinable. However, many more brines must be examined and the resulting response curves analyzed in comparison to known causal phenornena before this objective is achieved. INTRODUCTION One of the perennial moot questions in the literature of petroleum engineering is whether the reservoir rock is oil- or water-wet. Possibly an answer to this question could come from a careful examination of oilfield brines. None of the conventional methods of examining brines (chemical analysis, pH and electrical conductivity measurements, and the like) answer the question. Careful analysis of reservoir behavior observed in the exploitation of oil fields, particularly in the application of fluid injection, has been fruitful to the extent that a few reservoirs are believed to be properly classified. Physical chemistry suggests the behavior of reservoir brine and rock may be due to something in the brine in small amount. The ever increasing development and modification of theory in the general field of surface and interfacial chemistry has, and is, contributing to a better understanding of the problem, particularly as theory is verified by data. The work herein reported was begun in 1953 by Hough and Roebuck 1,2 who employed a new form of alternating current polarography, i.e., tensammetry, developed by Breyer, et a13,4 and who studied eight oilfield brines in adapting tensammetry to petroleum engineering needs. THEORY AND DEFINITIONS Tensammetry is a new technique of inquiry into surface phenomena. Specifically, a weak alternating current voltage is superimposed upon the direct current voltage applied to a dropping mercury electrode in contact with an electrolyte containing a small amount of a surfactant. The resultant alternating current can be measured and provides the experimental data for this new area of research. Under the influence of the direct current voltage, polar molecules arrange themselves in a double layer at the electrode. This double layer may be compared to a variable condenser, the capacitance of which is a function of the imposed direct current voltage. The direct current voltage determines the degree of adsorption of the surface active molecule on the electrode. Whenever the molecules are strongly adsorbed on the electrode, the capacitance of the double layer is low and the alternating current through the cell is low. Desorption occurs at some values of the direct current voltage, and at these voltages the capacitance of the double layer is high, resulting in an increase in the alternating current through the cell. This paper presents stress-cycle graphs for five samples of monel metal and three high-strength aluminum alloys. These graphs are evidently curves with horizontal asymptote. The position of the horizontal asymptote can be determined with sufficient accuracy by extending the experiments to not more than 50,000,000 cycles. For some of the graphs, there is a slight downward slope between 50,000,000 and 100,000,000 cycles. The slope is so slight, however, that, extrapolation from 50,000,000 to 100,000,000 cycles gives the endurance limit with sufficient accuracy. Monel metal and duralumin are not exceptional among non-ferrous metals in endurance properties. IN Part I of this paper' a comparison was given of the results obtained in investigation of the endurance properties of non-ferrous metals in .three laboratories: the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois, the U. S. Air Service at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, and the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md. Part I was devoted to a discussion of the forms of the stress-cycle graphs obtained at the three laboratories. For comparison, typical graphs obtained at the three laboratories were plotted on the same semi-logarithmic scale. The typical rotating-cantilever graph for ferrous and non-ferrous metals obtained at the Naval Experiment Station was described as a curve descending with gradually decreasing slope to a horizontal line. In the reply to the discussion of Part I, however, this graph was described as a curve with horizontal asymptote. It. was also said that the ordinate of the asymptote (the endurance limit) could be determined by endurance tests of not more than 50,000,000 cycles. This description was intended to apply only within the range of ordinates used in plotting an ordinary endurance graph. It was recognized that if .extended upward beyond the usual field, the curvature of the graph would decrease until -the graph would either approach a straight a line or possibly reverse its curvature.

In 1034 the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama began an investigation of the availability of kyanite ores as a source of raw material for the manufacture of refractories. Under this program, gravity concentration and flotation tests have been made on two varieties of Georgia kyariite ore, mica schist and massive. Most of the attention has been directed to the mica schist ores, as they are more widely distributed and seem to offer greater economic possibilities than the massive ores. It is evident that the preparation of kyanite for use as a refractory material involves other considerations than the mere elimination of impurities. A concentration process that eliminates impurities satisfactorily may have to be followed by some additional treatment, since the final product must be of a coarseness and size ratio that will make it suitable for refractories manufacture. So far in the investigation at the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines only the concentration problem has been considered, and this paper is intended as an interim report. Ores The schist ores contain 1 to 9 per cent of kyanite crystals embedded in mica and quartz, with smaller amounts of graphite, garnet and iron oxide and minor amounts of other heavy minerals. The garnet content varies from a trace to a few per cent. The minerals are easily released by moderate grinding. The size of the kyanite ranges from fine needles to crystals 1 1/2 in. long, 1/2 in. wide and 1/4 in. thick. The garnet, quartz and iron oxide grains have a smaller mean mesh than most of the kyanite. The maximum size of the garnet crystals corresponds to about 14 mesh and that of the sand grains is considerably less. Most of the iron oxide is still finer, for the minus 100-mesh size is greatly enriched in Fe²O3. The massive ore consists of radiating masses of kyanite interlocked with quartz, mica, corundum and small amounts of other heavy minerals.

West Texas and New Mexico have been overshadowed by the dcvelopment in East Texas to such an extent that the area has been placed on a settled production basis by most of the operators. Considerable develop-mCnt work on both proven and unproven acreage remains to be carried 011, but the incentive, a ready and profitable market, has been lacking. The main characteristics of the fields in this area are so well known that they are not described again in this paper, which thus resolves itself into a statistical review of the more important production features of the area. Proration has been in effect during the year and has been rigorously applied with the full cooperation of all producers. Proration in West Texas and New Mexico is based in the more productive fields on a potential and acreage distribution of the allowance to the individual wells or acreage units. Potentials are determined generally by a short production test of from 1 to 4 hr.; and the hourly rate is multiplied by 24 to obtain the 24-hr. production or rated potential of the separate wells. The potential values thus set up have been questioned by many production men who are not willing to concede that the instantaneous (hourly) capacity of a well to produce is its potential capacity for a day with all other wells in the pool producing at their capacity. However, the potential of a well determined as above remains its chief rating as a measure of the permeability in place and as an indication of the possible reserve feeding that well. The acreage factor has made it unnecessary to overdevelop properties in order to obtain an allowance proportionate to neighbors who are willing to drill an excessive number of wells on a piece of acreage in the hopes of a quick drainage and a corresponding profit. Proration has resulted in an orderly development of many of the pools in this area on the base as outlined above, resulting in more reasonable spacing of wells and the more even withdrawal of oil and the ensuing expectation of high recoveries. THE development of a cement that will resist the destructive action of sea water and other corrosive waters is a problem that has occupied cement chemists for the past one hundred years. It has been found that of the various salts that commonly occur in corrosive waters, sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and magnesium chloride are most destruc-tive to cement. Many investigations have been carried out in the United States, in Canada, and in Europe to solve the problem of what constitutes a sulphate-resistant cement, and during the past 10 years some of the findings give definite information in this respect. COMPOSITION OF CEMENT Portland cement is composed of four major compounds: 1. Tricalcium silicate 3CaO.Si02 (C3S) 2. Dicalcium silicate 2CaO.Si02 (C2S) 3. Tricalcium aluminate 3CaO.Al203 (C3A) 4. Tetracalcium aluminoferrite 4CaO.Al203.Fe203 (C4AF) The two calcium silicates are the main contributors of strength. The tricalcium aluminate contributes some to the early strength of the cement but has the least resistance of the four compounds toward the attack of sulphate waters. The tetracalcium aluminoferrite does not contribute very much to the strength, but is far more resistant to sulphate waters than the tricalcium aluminate. When hardened cement is exposed to water containing sodium or magnesium sulphates, these salts will react with the hydrated tricalcium aluminate in the cement and form compounds that will cause a swelling, disruption and crumbling of the hardened cement.

MEMBERS of the Engineering Education Committee held two meetings at Joplin preliminary to the opening of the main meeting there. The first was held on Sunday afternoon. It was attended by all who had arrived early enough and as among the dozen or' fifteen who were present the heads of a half dozen schools of mines were included it was a representative gathering. C: H. Fulton, chairman of the Committee presided and T. T. Read acted as secretary of the meeting. The chair., man reminded those present that last year there had been some discussion as to the advisability of the proposal, made by Edward Steidle, that a, separate society, devoted to education in the mineral industry, he organized. Many .people had felt that there are already so many societies in existence to demand one's time and attention, that it would be a mistake to add to their number and the counter suggestion had been made that the work of this committee could be so reorganized as to meet all the needs that a separate society could fill. He therefore presented for discussion these four' questions: (1) Shall a subcommittee .be appointed to study, and report in February, 1932, the possibility of the reorganization of the work of the Engineering Education Committee into the equivalent of an' Institute division; (2) if the work is so reorganized what shall be the relation of the work of the Committee (division) to the work of the-Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education; (3.): what are the, cardinal objectives of education for the mineral industry; and (4) what should be done as regards the movement in some institutions to plan their work-in the light of that being done in other institutions, for example, in geophysics?

IN May, 1878, I had the honor of presenting to the Institute, at the Chattanooga meeting, some observations upon the heat of the Comstock Lode, and since then the subject has attracted some attention and criticism, in the course of which, I have observed errors of apprehension which I beg leave to correct now. Mr. John Arthur Phillips discussed it before the Geological Society, his paper being printed in the Quarterly Journal for August, 1879.* His criticism is based upon that part of my paper in which I quote a number of analyses of the mine waters, to illustrate the fact that the heat does not come from the oxidation of pyrite. An analysis of indexing is given for an idealized plastic rock. Indexing refers to chipping from a bit tooth to a previously formed crater. A method is indicated for computing the dependence of chip size and shape as well as force on the tooth for various tooth shapes as a function of crater configuration and distance to the previous crater. Pressure on the tooth is found to vary with depth of penetration after a critical depth has been reached. Damp sand model experiments indicate that simple solutions using linear and logarithmic spiral slip-line fields for Coulomb plastic materials give reasonable approximations to the failure patterns. Both idealized roller cone bits and fixed blade or drag bits are considered, and methods are presented for approximating the force on the bit and the chip volume when the rock is subjected to sufficiently high pressure to behave plastically. One of the primary objectives of drilling research investigations is to develop theoretical equations which can be used to predict the behavior of rock under drilling loading conditions. Since rocks usually fail in a brittle manner at atmospheric conditions, much current research is directed to studies of the brittle failure of rock under the action of drilling too1s. 1,2 The results of triaxial test on rocks indicate that both rock strength and ductility increase at high confining pressures.3 Recent results from single bit-tooth indentation experiments on dry rocks indicate that the transition from brittle to ductile failure under a bit tooth can occur at pressures sufficiently low to be of interest in oil well drilling.4 Single bit tooth experiments and analyses are not directly applicable to the drilling process since one of the important facets in drilling is the interaction between a bit-tooth and the previously formed crater. This interaction is referred to as indexing.' The purpose of the present paper is to indicate how plasticity theory can be applied to the analysis of indexing for plastic rock. Drag bit or fixed-blade drilling is considered and a discussion is given of the drilling action of an idealized roller cone bit. Results of simple experimental studies using a damp sand model are given as a method of visualizing the failure patterns in rocks under high confining pressures. These results are compared with plasticity theory using simple solutions based on linear and logarithmic spiral slip-lines. Discontinuous stress fields are proposed for drag bit drilling based upon the soil mechanics analysis of Shields. SINGLE BIT TOOTH RESULTS Single bit tooth indentation experiments using dry rocks under pressures from 0 to 5000 psi have indicated a correlation between the shape of a force-displacement curve and the nature of the rock failure beneath the tool.4 Continuous linear curves are in-

TOWARD the close of 1925, a British geologist, T. Landell Mills, brought to the notice of .A. Chester Beatty and selection Trust Ltd. certain mineral areas in southern Yugoslavia. Mills' data, which included rough maps and preliminary reports by' a Yugoslav engineer, Jules Draskocy, appeared interesting to Reatty, and early in 1926, I, with three British assistants, proceeded to Serbiaand commenced the investigation of several groups of ancient mine workings. They were found to be extensive and the geological conditions-schists, limestones, and andesitic intrusive-favorable for mineral deposits. At Stan Trg, on the Trepca Concession, five rniles east of Kosovska Mitrovica, an ancient filled adit was found, a shelter-hut erected, and work started in reopening this adit.

Edmund Gybbon SpilsbURy, mining and metallurgical engineer of international reputation, died suddenly of heart failure on May 28, 1920, in the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, following an operation for cataract, which had been successfully performed a few days before. Mr. Spilsbury was one of the early members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, which he joined in 1873. During all this time he contributed freely of his time and ability. He was manager of the Institute from 1885 to 1887, vice-president, 1893 and 1894, and president in 1896. He was also a member of the Engineers Club, of which he was president in 1916 and 1917, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, American Electrochemical Society and the Rocky Mountain Club of New York. He was a trustee of the United Engineering Society from 1916 to his death; a member of United Engineering Society Library Board from its organization in 1913 until his death, being its chairman from 1918 to January, 1920; a trustee of Engineering Foundation Board from 1916 until his death; and member of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award. He was also a member of the Division of Engineering of the National Research Council. Born in London, England, in 1845, Mr. Spilsbury went to Liege, Belgium, at an early age, where he received his preliminary education. For his technical education he attended the University of Louvain, Belgium, graduating in 1862, and later he took a practical course at Clausthal, Germany. In 1864 he became assistant engineer for the Eschweiler Zinc Co., of Stolberg, one of the largest miners and smelters of lead and zinc in the world at that time, and the next year he took charge of that company's mines and works on the Island of Sardinia. From Sardinia he went to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. In 1867 he entered the service of McClean & Stilman, of London, and had charge of the construction of the iron gates for the Surrey Commercial Docks. In 1868 he was designing engineer with J. Casper Harkort, and had charge of most of the detail work of the Keulenberg Bridge in Holland, the Danube Bridge in Vienna, and the Rhine Bridge at Düsseldorf. In 1870 Mr. Spilsbury came to the United States to investigate the lead and zinc resources for the Austro-Belgian Metallurgical Co. After spending two years in this work, he resigned in order to practice in the United States, and he was the first to introduce the Harz system of ore

Diesel locomotives, trucks, bulldozers, and other diesel-powered equipment are fast proving their superiority for mine transportation purposes. MORE than 100 minerals are mined and processed in the U. S. Management and labor have negotiated wage-scale agreements that have balanced wages and affected cost of labor in such a manner that comparisons can be made of transportation costs. Transportation of materials underground has become of vital importance.1"0 This report describes underground haulage methods and equipment, presents cost analyses, and discusses future plans for underground transportation in metal mines. It does not cover hoisting in shafts or slopes by cage, skip, or cars. Advancements have been made by the metal mining industry in lowering transportation costs in several mines, making it possible to mine orebodies or portions of orebodies not considered economically recoverable a few years ago.7,8 Wumerous reports have been written on transportation at metal mines; this report covers recent haulage at some representative mines throughout the U. S. The term metal mine is used to include all noncoal mines from which up-to-date information was obtainable. The best haulage equipment is subject to break- downs and accidents; but unless the rolling equipment, track, and signal systems are kept in good repair and are operated systematically, these breakdowns and accidents are likely to be frequent, destructive, and more costly than are necessary.10 Rail haulage crews using dependable rolling stock can move trips safely over grades low enough to be traveled without loss of control; this applies particularly if the track is straight and well maintained. Few accidents occur on main haulage lines if visibility and clearance are good and clear track is assured. One-way traffic underground is a recent development contributing to reduction of accidents and increased efficiency in mine haulage (Kelly mine, Anaconda Co., Butte, Mont., and Climax mine, Climax Molybdenum Co., Climax, Colo.)." Locomotives: Six types of mine locomotive used in recent years are trolley, storage battery, combination trolley and storage battery, diesel, compressed air, and gasoline. Electric haulage has been displaced by compressed air locomotives, which have been used successfully in certain instances, especially on dirty and wet tracks and steep grades." INTRODUCTION It is recognized that, for a variety of reasons, some companies in the mineral industry today are by no means cash-rich and, in fact, are reporting a growing proportion of long-term debt in their capital structures. A review of recent balance sheets of small, medium-size, and some larger companies, indicates that a fair number still have substantial positions in cash equivalents such as U.S. government issues and other short-term money market instruments. In part, this paper concerns itself with companies which have sufficient cash and equivalents and/or cash generation to internally finance mining projects or expansions but which, for some reason, choose to borrow funds. Misconceptions which appear to frequently underlie so-called "leveraging" decisions are explored in this paper. Also considered arc' those circumstances under which any company, including one that is cash rich, should consider borrowing for a project in an amount beyond what would otherwise be necessary based upon its internal financing ability. I do not attempt to cover the raising of equity capital in public markets in this paper. OVERALL RETURN ON INVESTABLE CASH If you approach an individual with an investment which can be financed from savings, or by borrowing at a rate higher than one is earning on savings, that individual will quickly tell you that to pay interest at a rate higher than is being earned on savings would reduce overall income. Assuming that additional investment opportunities are not currently being considered, the individual concludes that a draw-down on savings, leaving a cushion for contingencies suited to individual circumstances, is the correct financial decision. For reasons discussed later, the simple mathematical logic leading to this conclusion tends to become obscured at the corporate level. When Leveraged Studies Are Inappropriate or Premature Surprisingly, I have heard of a number of companies that could afford to finance an investment solely with internal funds, which have made DCFROR (i.e. discounted-cash-flow rate-of-return) studies not only on a 100% equity basis but also on a leveraged basis. Certainly, a leveraged study would be appropriate if additional projects were competing for more capital than was available internally. Often, however, other projects are not far enough along to warrant a leveraged study and there is some danger that a project may be undertaken because it has an estimated acceptable rate of return, on a leveraged basis, that is not ultimately earned because some of the other projects are postponed or abandoned and borrowing is less than expected. For the above reasons, until it has been determined that (1) borrowing is a reasonable certainty for a particular project and (2) the timing and amount to be borrowed has been determined within a reasonable range of accuracy, I believe it is inappropriate and misleading to calculate DCFROR for a project other than on a 100% equity basis. Even when there are several projects currently competing for funds and borrowing will be required to finance one or more of them, using the common yardstick of calculating DCFROR on a 100% equity basis is a safer method to initially evaluate and compare the attractiveness of the projects. Many companies, whether they would have to borrow or not, will reject projects that on a 100% equity basis do not meet their minimum rate of return standards. Some companies which have to borrow will undertake a project provided the project's DCFROR on a leveraged basis meets its minimum return standards. The danger of this approach is that even moderate shrinkages of estimated cash flows could plunge return below

Face ventilation is generally the most critical area in the coal mine ventilation system. Various studies have repeatedly shown that good ventilation is by far the most effective and least costly method of controlling dust and gas problems created during face operations. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed and assisted in the development of several new concepts in face ventilation systems, and in methods to accurately evaluate these systems underground. A new type of scrubber and ventilation system design built into the auger support frame of a continu- ous miner was developed. The objective was to improve face ventilation and reduce respirable dust concentrations. With this arrangement, one scrubber is mounted into each side of the boom. Laboratory and underground tests of various scrubber discharge arrangements showed good to excellent dust and methane control. Combined face ventilation systems, using both blowing and exhaust curtain, potentially offer dust and gas control and deeper cutting. Bureau tests at a mine using a combined face ventilation system and remote- control-operated continuous miners showed excellent dust and methane control. The advancement of line curtain systems beyond permanent supports without exposing workmen to roof fall hazards can be accomplished only with specially designed extendable devices. Numerous concepts for line curtain extension have been developed and tested. For the past several years, the Bureau has been testing various types of extensible face ventilation systems. These extensible systems can generally be classified as floor-, roof-, machine-, and rib-mounted systems. In the past 6 years, approximately 40 systems have been evaluated for feasibility. From these, several have been selected as practical or innovative and are presented herein. A technique developed by the Bureau to accurately and safely evaluate the effectiveness of face ventilation is also presented.

The metals Cd, ,Wg-, Sn, TI, Zn, and Zr reach a peak hardness after a criticfir1 deformation by rolling- and then soften with fwther rolling-, thereby exhibiting wovk softening. Optical metallography on Cd, Mg, and Zn shows that work softening is accompanied by a change in grain size occurring during deformation. The creep of zinc from -1l° to +60°C at stresses in the range of 7.9 to 17.3 kg per sq mm is given by € = e0 -t- Bt + Kt +at6. The third and second rate constcints are related by the equation a = K~ K6 and their stress and temperature dependence can be represented by the equations K = A, . exp - (u, - Bu)/kT. A model based upon the stress activated glide of sub-boundaries is proposed which qualitatively accounts for the metallog-raphic observations. Expressions, which are in reasonable quantitative agreement with the ex-pe~inzental observations, are derived for the creep of zinc. THE term "work softening" has been used previously by Polakowski1 and by Cottrell and stokes2 to describe phenomena where further strain of a deformed material leads to a decrease in flow stress. In both cases, however, the conditions were changed for the second straining. Here, the term "work softening" is intended to refer to a decrease in flow stress after continued straining in the same direction at the same temperature: work softening is the antithesis of "work hardening". Work softening of zinc was reported by chadwick3 and in discussion of that paper Jenkins4 indicated that cadmium also work softens. More recently work softening has been reported5 in two magnesium alloys, -99.5 pct Mg. Chadwick found that the hardness, 0.2 pct Proof Stress and the UTS of electrolytic zinc all increased with progressive cold reductions up to 30 pct and then progressively decreased with further rolling. Gay and Kelly6 used a back-reflection X-ray technique to study the effect of cold rolling zinc and found that although deformations greater than 2 to 5 pct reduction in thickness produced some recrystallized grains, deformations greater than 40 pct caused com-plete spontaneous recrystallization. At deformations greater than 60 pct the material was found to consist solely of recrystallized grains, -20 pm diam, the size of which decreased with increasing reduction and was much less than the initial grain size of the annealed material (-300 pm diam). Similar results were also reported for cadmium, tin, and lead.6 Gay, Hirsch, and Kelly' suggest that these experiments indicate recrys-tallization takes place when the dislocation density exceeds a certain value. However, no measurements of MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The purity of the metals used in this work is indicated by the following figures: Zn (99.99); Cd (99.94); Mg (99.95); T1 (99.99). The zirconium was iodide crys tal bar with a probable purity of about 98 pct. The metals were obtained in the form of 0.25 in. thick strip or 0.425 in. diam rod by various fabrication methods and then annealed to ensure complete re-crystallization. Hardness-deformation curves were obtained at room temperature by rolling 4 in. thick strip under conditions which left a surface adequate for diamond pyramid hardness tests immediately after rolling. The hardness was taken as the niean of five impressions made using a 5 kg load and the time elapsing between rolling and making the last impression never exceeded 5 min. The zinc specimens for creep testing were from 3 by 3 by 4 in. cast slabs which were rolled to 0.10 in. thickness starting at 350°C and finishing cold. The resulting strip was cut into pieces 1 in. wide and annealed in batches. With suitable choices of annealing temperature between 100" arid 400°C five different grain sizes varying from 4.54 x 10' to 3.03 x l05 grains per sq cm (530 to 20 um diam) were obtained. Creep tests were done in compression using a sub-press, based on a design after Ford,8 in which the strip is compressed between dies 0.100 in. wide under conditions of plane strain. Since there is no lateral spread of the material, the area of contact between the dies and strip remains constant throughout the test and the application of a constant load, using the load maintaining device of a hydraulic testing machine, resulted in a constant stress. Covering the dies with strips of P.T.F.E. reduced frictional effects to a minimum. The creep strain was obtained by measuring the travel of the crosshead of the testing machine to a sensitivity of 0.1 pct reduction in thickness. The complete subpress assembly was contained in a steel box and for tests above the ambient this was filled with liquid paraffin and heated electrically. Temperatures below the ambient were obtained with a cooling mixture of acetone and solid carbon dioxide in the box. The liquids were stirred and the temperature of the specimen, which was controlled to ±0.5"C dur-ing a test, was measured by a thermocouple placed near the dies. Compression testing of cylindrical specimens was also carried out in the subpress using hardened flat discs separated from the test material by P.T.F.E. sheets which obviated barrelling of the specimens. UNGER,*Pittsburgh, Pit., (written discussion?).-From the subject of the paper it is natural to expect that the data presented must be results secured from an open-hearth furnace working under normal conditions, but such is not the case, as the conclusions are based on the results of laboratory tests, which do not approach service conditions. The early basic hearths were made of burnt lime, then followed burnt dolomite, bricks made of calcined dolomite and a 'binder, usually tar, and finally magnesite bricks covered with a layer of sintered magnesite. When this material became scarce, special dolomitic refractories were used. In the summary, it is claimed that magnesite low in lime, or of greatest purity, ranks first in the resistance to slaking and to corrosive slags. It is well known that neither pure lime nor magnesia has much value as a refractory. By the addition f fluxes, such as silica and iron oxide, lime is rendered inert to slaking in the same way as are the special dolomitic refractories. An example on a large scale is the ordinary basic open-hearth cinder, produced every clay, which does not slake. Pure magnesia, regardless of the lime content, is not any better fitted for a refractory than pure lime. The pure natural varieties, such as Grecian or Washington magnesites, must be burnt with sufficient silica and oxide of iron to produce a satisfactory material. Grain magnesite, either artificial or natural, is, not used in burning in a hearth in the state in which it is received. To make a satisfactory hearth, it must be made more impure by adding about 20 per cent. of basic open-hearth cinder, otherwise it will-not remain in place.

WITH the great expansion currently being made in the aluminum output of the United States, not only by the company that has heretofore been the sole producer but by a now organization in the field it is only natural to wonder to what degree the; ore reserves of the United States can contribute to the growing consumption. For the three-year period 1937-'39 the U.S. Bureau of Mine's figures indicate that the annual domestic production of bauxite averaged about 370,000 long tons, compared with average, annual import of about 194,000 long tons. About 85 per cent of the imports came from Surinam, nearly all of which went into aluminum manufacture. Not all of the or -kipped from mines in the United States is used to make alumimun however as Bureau figures indicate that in these three years an average of only 48 per cent of the domestic ore shipment were so used the abrasive chemical and other industries taking respectively 27, 21, and 4 per cent of the output. The recent increase in the demand for bauxite has been of course in it use for aluminum manufacture. This as is well known is largely attributable to the world race for supremacy in
