IN spite of the great amount of operating experience and of studies directed toward elucidation of the interrelation of the several processes going on in the blast furnace, the present picture of its operation is based largely on indirect evidence and on speculation. The reason for this unsatisfactory situation is the extreme difficulty of making direct observations and significant measurements while the furnace is operating, and of translating laboratory experience to the conditions obtaining in the smelting process. Yet there are questions that can be investigated with some promise of a definitive answer; and it is the purpose of the present paper to set forth some of these questions, as a basis for discussion, which may, it is hoped, lead to active work on some of them. In order to provide a starting point for this discussion, some views held tentatively by the writer are outlined, along with a certain amount of evidence gathered from operating records and interpreted on the basis of the ideas expressed. These opinions may prove not to be pertinent, and may well not be in accord with the opinions of others; they have been included to encourage others to do likewise and on purpose to provoke informal discussion. In this way it should be possible to transcend the limitations of formal papers; to bring forth suggestions of new hypotheses or new methods of investigation; and to promote better understanding between investigators and operators in this difficult field. The statements made express the present views of one physical chemist who is not too familiar with all the difficulties of maintaining these enormous reaction vessels in reasonably smooth and economical operation; who, however, is persuaded that some of these difficulties would be less formidable if surer knowledge of the several interrelated and concurrent processes were available and made use of. For these difficulties arise largely, it is believed, from variation in conditions which the operator must meet as best be can, and should lessen as these conditions can be brought under control so that they are either made substantially constant or the variations are neutralized by compensating methods. A. VARIATION IN BURDEN AND IN MIXING OF CHARGE To the scientific investigator, who aims to control the conditions of experiment and to limit the number of variable factors, the most perplexing aspect of the blast-furnace process is that nothing seems to remain constant for long. Variations of burden seem to be unnecessarily frequent; and, even if the charge were constant from hour to hour, its constituents usually are not mixed as intimately as they might well be. Generally, the different methods of financing new mining projects are not well understood by the engineers and supervisory personnel. Nor are the effects of these alternatives on depletion, taxes and profitability readily apparent to even the sophisticated management personnel without the aid of cash flow studies. Fortunately, with the advent of the computer it is possible now to simulate many different combinations of 1) equity, 2) loan and 3) production payment financing with little effort. A general computer program for cash flow analysis of mining ventures has been developed and applied as a case example to a 1967 feasibility study of the Underground Mining of Minnesota Taconite. The effects on profitability as measured both in rates-of-return and present value are presented for various financing combinations. In addition, percentage depletion rates were altered so as to measure the impact of this statuatory allowance. Based on the cost data as presented in the aforementioned 1967 feasibility study, and assuming 7% loans, the rates-of-return vary from 9. 9% to [00] % on equity variations and from 9. 9% to 11.4% on total invested funds.

A university is a place to build minds and develop leaders. It provides the tools necessary for the development of new ideas which come from the inquisitive mind and is one of the stepping stones to management responsibilities for the truly ambitious. However, it is not always a financially sound investment! Lately, there have been several articles published on the economic advantages of a college education. These articles tend to average wages together according to education and years of service. Their tabulations generally include the chairman of the board, various vice presidents and plant managers and do not reflect the achievement of the average graduate. They consistently fail to include an analysis of the investment a college education requires. In reality, the bright high school graduate would make more real money over a 20-year period if he went directly to work "on the hill" than he would if he graduated from college. Furthermore, he would find little difference between his wages and those of the college graduate in the period from 20-30 years after high school graduation.

The volume of air needed to move the combustion wave through each acre-foot of the reservoir is a very important quantity for engineering economic analyses. A new method, which involves backflowing the injection well, has been developed for determining the air requirement .for the forward combustion thermal pilot in the Delaware-Childers field. The method depends on measurement of the total volume of air injected and measurement of the pore volume in the zone swept out by the combustion front. The basic premise of the method is that the pore volume of the swept zone contains air, while the formation around this zone contains flue gas, oil and water. The pore volume of the swept zone is determined by blowing down the pilot section of the formation through the injection well after the pilot is shut down. Oxygen balance is used to differentiate between air from the swept zone and flue gas from the surrounding formation. Data indicate that air'is produced from the swept zone by relatively efficient miscible displacement by the flue gas. The pore volume occupied by the air in the swept zone is determined by simple PVT relationships. The average temperature of the swept zone is calculated by heat balance from the total amount of heat generated during the pilot and losses to the surrounding formation. The new method was applied successfully at the conclusion of the pilot in the Delaware-Childers field; the air required for the reservoir conditions involved was calculated to be 19.2 MMscf/acre-ft of reservoir swept. INTRODUCTION One of the most important pieces of information to be found from a forward combustion pilot is the air requirement; that is, the volume of air needed to move the combustion wave through each acre-foot of the reservoir. Compression costs per barrel of oil recovered, which are a direct function of the air requirement, are a large portion of the expenses incurred in the thermal recovery process. Thus, the profitability of thermal recovery depends largely on the air requirement, which is a measure of the amount of fuel deposited and burned in the thermal recovery process. Several attempts have been made to correlate crude oil properties with fuel deposition and, hence, air requirement.l*2 Other attempts have been made by our laboratory to find the air requirement by material balance, gravity survey, pressure transient analysis,3 magnetic survey and the poten-tiometric model. Better methods are needed to predict more accurately the economics of fieldwide application of the process. Another method of finding the air requirement consists of operating a pilot thermal project for several years. This is followed by an extensive coring program to define the volume swept by the combustion wave. The air requirement is found from the total injected air divided by the volume of the swept region found from the coring operation. This method is costly; an adequate coring program usually costs several hundred thousand dollars. A thermal pilot was operated in a watered-out portion of the Delaware-Childers field, Bartlesville sand, from Nov., 1960, until May 3, 1965. One of the primary purposes of this pilot operation was to determine the air requirement for economic calculations which determine the advisability of expanding the project to the entire 128,000 acre-ft field. Barnes4 has described the result of this pilot operation,, including calculation of the air requirement from limited coring data. The value obtained, as calculated, was 15.8 MMscf/acre-ft. One purpose of this report is to describe a new method of finding the air requirement from a thermal pilot operation. A second purpose is to describe the application of this method to the Delaware-Childers thermal pilot. Lewis E. Young, who will formally assume his duties as President of the AIME at the Annual Meeting in San Francisco in February 1949, was born in Topeka, Kansas, Oct. 1, 1878. Dr. Young received his engineering education at the Pennsylvania State College, where he received the degree of B.S. in Mining Engineering in 1900. In 1904 he received his E.M. degree from Iowa State College, and in 1915 a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. In 1947, the University of Missouri conferred on Dr. Young honoris causa the degree of Doctor of Engineering. His active career began in the educational field as instructor at Iowa State College, and following that, as professor of mining at the Colorado School of Mines, 1903-1907. While he was at Golden he launched hi: career as consulting mining engineer for various Western companies. Leaving the Colorado School of Mines, Dr. Young returned to Missouri, serving the University of Missouri as director of the School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, 1907-1914. Leaving Missouri he went to the University of Illinois as assistant professor of business organization, 1915-1918, during which period he wrote exhaustive treatises on mine subsidence and mine taxation, which won for him the degree of Ph.D. before mentioned.

Atlantic Richfield Co. began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April 1975, in Live Oak County, Tex., 10 miles southwest of the town of George West. The operation is designed to produce 250,00 lb of U308 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Co., Dalco, and U.S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural cattle ranching and farming---but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well. A nine month enviromental baseline study was conducted on the property beginning in Feb. 1975. Plants and animals of the Clay West area were identified and representative terrestrial and aquatic communities were analyzed. Physical and chemical parameters of the soils were described and analyzed. The surface and underground waters were analyzed chemically; radionuclides, heavy metals, nutrients, and pesticide concentrations were measured in the creek sediments; bacteriological measurements were made in creek water and sediments; radionuclide and chemical levels in plants and animals, both terrestial and aquatic, were measured. These studies, though not required by existing, state or federal laws, were considered necessary to assess the existing conditions before operations began on site. The in-place leaching technique for uranium mining eliminates the enviromental disturbances associated with open pit or underground mining. No grinding and crushing of ore is needed, nor are large tonnages of waste tailings produced. Surface subsidence is not expected since less than 5 lb of uranium is present per ton of rock and even complete removal of such small amounts should not cause subsidence. Solution mining has fewer environmental problems than conventional mining. Members of the Texas Water Quality Board recognized the differences which exist and have recently formulated new environmental control procedures which apply specifically to solution mining. Some of the solution mining activities which are of particular concern are discussed in the following pages. Process Description The produced uranium-bearing solution is pumped through a pipeline from the pattern area to the plant area. The first pattern area consists of a nest of 125 fluid injection, production, and monitor wells [(Fig. 1)]. Injection wells have 4-in. casings and are spaced 50 ft apart on a square grid. Production wells have a 6-in. casing and are located in the center of each square. A block flow sheet of the plant is given in [Fig. 2]. The produced solution goes through parallel trains, each consisting of a carbon column and an ion exchange column in series. The carbon column removes any sand present in the produced solution and the ion exchange column extracts the uranium. The depleted solution is treated with chemicals and returned to the field for reinjection. The uranium retained in the ion exchange column is removed periodically with a sodium chloride solution. Uranium-bearing solution from the ion exchange column is passed through a charcoal column for removal of impurities and then to a precipitation tank where the uranium is precipitated as yellowcake slurry. The yellowcake slurry is clarified, filtered and dried to produce a granular yellowcake product. Environmental Considerations Sources of waste solutions to storage reservoirs, the backwash reservoir and atmospheric discharges are shown in the block flow sheet [(Fig. 2)]. These waste solutions pose a relatively small problem and are adequately controlled by conventional means. There is one area, however,

The apparent activation energy, U, JOY plastic deformation of aluminium, copper, and gold single crystals and polycrystalline aluminum was found to he dependent upon surface condition. At low strains, the value for U for aluminum single crystals was 4200 cal per mole ; however, this value decreased to 920 cal per mole when the specimens were polished during the test at a rate of 50 X 10-5 win-1 The activated volume also was found to increase with the rate of metal removal. That the surface plays an important role in plastic-deformation processes has been adequately demonstrated.1-4 Of particular interest at this time are the observations4 that the creep rate of single crystals of fee metals is increased markedly when specimens are polished during the deformation process. These observations were interpreted in terms of a dislocation debris layer at the surface regions of the crystal. This layer, which appears to be a region containing a high concentration of dislocations or segments of dislocations, not only will impede the egress of dislocations on the primary slip system, but will also provide a barrier against which dislocations may pile up. By this means, a stress which opposes the motion of dislocations will be generated. It is considered that this stress must be taken into account in any theory which describes the plastic-deformation process. Although a detailed dislocation model cannot be given at this time, it may be stated that the stresses opposing the motion of dislocations arise from the dislocations in the debris layer, Ts, and ti due to the resistance to motion imposed by internal obstacles such as Lomer-Cottrell barriers, subgrain and grain boundaries, forest dislocations, and so forth, as well as the resistance due to the presence of jogs on dislocations and the interaction of the stress fields of dislocations, and so forth. In essence, we have added an additional term, ts, to the usual form of the equation T = Ta- Tb, where Tb is the back stress due to the various types of obstacles which impede the motion of dislocation. Accordingly, the net stress, t, acting on a dislocation may be written as where Ta is the applied shear stress. For deformation which occurs by a thermally activated process5,8 ?=Ae-u/kT = A e(u,-VT)/kT [2] and U = Uo- Vt PI where U = activation energy for plastic flow, y = shear strain rate, Uo = activated energy for plastic deformation in the absence of stress and depends upon the particular deformation process, V = activated volume, k = Boltzmann constant, T = temperature, OK, and A = frequency factor. From Eqs. [I] and [3], U = Uo- V(Ta - Ti - TS) [4] and it is seen that if Ts decreases, the activation energy, U, must decrease if V remains constant. However, as will be shown, V is a function of the surface conditions. In their work on aluminum, Lytton and coworkers7 reported that at low strains the activation energy was 3400 cal per mole and at high strains it was 28,000 cal per mole. The lower value was interpreted in terms of the energy necessary to overcome the Peierls force, while the higher value was associated with the energy necessary for dislocations to move by a cross-slip process. It will be shown that the lower activation energy is associated with the surface debris layer rather than with the Peierls force. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals having a nominal cross section of 1/8 in. and a 3-in. gage length were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique using a multiple-cavity graphite mold. The initial purity of the metals was 99.997, 99.999, and 99.999 pet for aluminum, copper, and gold, respectively. The orientation of the specimens is given in Fig. 1. THE equilibrium y phase in Cu-Be alloys forms by discontinuous precipitation, the new phase nucleating at the grain boundaries and growing into grains on both sides of the boundary. When the alloy is aged above 500°C, however, growth may take place into only one of the grains.1'2 In A1-Ag alloys it is known that the precipitate has the same orientation as the grain in which no growth takes place.3, 4 This was confirmed in the present investigation on a Cu-Be alloy. A Cu-1.79 wt pct Be alloy was solution-treated at 810°C for 2+ hr, quenched into water at O°C, and aged at 600°C for 1 hr in a salt bath. The specimen was thinned by chemical polishing and electropolishing at room temperature in a solution of H3PO4 saturated with CrOs. The foil produced was examined in a JEM 150 electron microscope operating at 150 kv. Fig. 1 shows precipitates growing on only one side of the grain boundary. Those familiar with the war in France at first hand know that in these last two years the weight of the suffering has fallen upon the families of the well-to-do classes; those who before the war lived in comparative ease and comfort, with every prospect of educating their children as their parents and grandparents had been. Thousands of the men in these families have been killed, "officiers d'élite," and the small pensions accorded the widows permit them only to house and feed their children HELÈNE JOURNÈS. and give them a common-school education. The pension for a lieutenant's widow is $245 a year; for 'a captain's, $345; for a colonel's $575; and so on. At present, it requires three francs a day to provide food for one person in cities, and conditions are not improving. The American Ouvroir Funds, 681 Fifth Ave., New York City, has tried for nearly two years to have individual Americans give individual children a "bourse," or purse, as it is called, of from $150 to $250 a year, so that they may enter such educational institutions as the Lycées, the Polytechnique, Beaux Arts, St. Cyr, etc. The war relief societies of these military schools furnish photographs and histories of children under their care and on their lists.

Swartz presiding. C. E. SWARTZ.-It is gratifying to see so many out at what may seem an early hour for the beginning of A.I.M.E. sessions, but I think this number-some fifty or sixty of you-is an adequate expression of the interest in these processes all over the United States, and possibly in foreign countries. I would like to ask those who feel that this type of program is of value to you to write or speak to some one of the Institute of Metals Division officers and suggest other topics for symposiums. We have a feeling that some of these current practices are of interest and we believe that under proper sponsorship many of the companies will be willing to give publicity to processes such as those that will be discussed today. Also, we would like suggestions and criticisms, so that the next ones can be better. The subject of continuous casting is not new, of course. The two papers on the program this morning will adequately cover the history and some of the earlier processes, some of the theory and some of the practice, some of the reasons why these various methods did not work. I was rather interested in discovering, when thumbing through one of the A.I.M.E. publications the other night, an article on continuous casting. I was not aware that the A.I.M.E. had published any papers on continuous casting, but there may be a number. The one that I happened to find was published in the 1915 volume, on the Mellen rod- casting process, and so we might say this is not the first session in which these subjects have been under discussion. However, there have been many improvements since then in all fields of metallurgical and mechanical engineering; consequently, I think that the papers today will be a little more involved and a little more complete in their technique. The first paper today will be given by one of our gentlemen of the press, who has done one of the outstanding jobs in this country in calling to our attention some of the newer processes that are being considered and being used in the metallurgical indus-

IN what ways can conventional geophysical methods be used in the search for quartz-sulphide veins covered by several feet of overburden? The New Park Mining Co., in search of an answer to this question, empirically tested simple geochemical, electrical, and magnetic methods over known ore bodies and geologic structures. Geochemical methods were the only ones found to be applicable to direct ore search. Indirect uses were found for electrical and magnetic tests. Experiments were conducted in the southeastern part of the Park City mining district. Ore in this part of the district is found principally in steeply dipping veins which are localized along faults and fractures that cut Paleozoic sediments and quartz diorite intrusives. The basic research for this study was conducted by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories in 1974. The high-sulfur content of coal threatens to erode its competitive position in the future. The impact of sulfur removal on final costs of eastern interior coal lies at the very heart of this market analysis. An extensive market survey was conducted that considered both traditional coal markets as well as anticipated future markets. Competition for coal from this province considers low-sulfur Western coal, nu- clear power, international oil and coal trade, as well as Appalachian coal producers. Based on projections of future energy consumption under several scenarios, a comprehensive market forecast for eastern interior coal was made to 2040. The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.

A METHOD for the chemical differentiation of oxidized cobalt from sulphide cobalt in complex mine and concentrator products is of considerable interest to a number of mining companies throughout the world. At Rhokana Corporation, in Northern Rhodesia, for instance, cobalt is found chiefly in the sulphide form, as carrollite, but a cobalt oxide mineral also occurs irregularly underground, and relatively small quantities in the mill feed from time to time are difficult to detect it visually at the concentrator. The oxide cobalt is not amenable to the sulphide flotation process used at Rhokana and nearly all of it passes into the tailing. The occasional. period when high tailing losses occur with no appreciable change in the cobalt content of the mill feed has naturally been disturbing to the concentrator staff, who had no means of determining whether an influx of cobalt oxide ore or laxity on the part of the mill flotation operators were responsible for these results. A procedure for determining oxidized copper minerals, based on their solubility in dilute sulphuric acid saturated with SO2, has been used for many years in the copper industry. In the presence of cuprite the procedure fails, but otherwise it gives results quite satisfactory for control purposes. Empirical methods for determining oxidized forms of zinc and lead have been proposed, but they are generally unsatisfactory except in isolated cases of a very simple ore. No published procedure for determining oxidized forms of cobalt or similar elements has come to the authors' notice. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE There are obviously two alternatives in attacking a problem of this nature. One is to employ a solvent for oxide cobalt that will not dissolve cobalt sulphide. The other is, to find a substance capable of oxidizing the cobalt sulphide to sulphate, which of course is water-soluble and can then be leached from the water-insoluble oxide cobalt. A representative sample of Rhokana cobalt oxide ore was secured, ground to minus 200-mesh, and carefully rolled to furnish a standard sample for this work. The analysis of this material gave the following percentages: Co, 0.55; Cu, 1.64; Fe, 2.98; S, 0.08; SiO2, 41.42; A1203, 11.20; CaO, 13.82; MgO, 3.80. As a source of cobalt sulphide a similar large sample of carrollite was prepared, analyzing Co, 23.36 per cent; Cu, 27.32; and S, 31.13. This sample of course was not pure carrollite, but was the best obtainable in quantities sufficient for a standard intended for considerable work. It was a pure sulphide sample, microscopic examination showing only carrollite, a little bornite, and gangue, with no visible sign of oxidized ore present. The method of making oxide of zinc direct from the ore was invented and developed at the works of The New Jersey Zinc Co. at Newark in the middle of the last century. The process was invented by Burrows, who had not the ability, financial or technical, to work out the details necessary to make it of commercial value. This was done by Col. Wetherill, whose name is commonly attached to this process. The grate bars used are also frequently called Wetherill grates, which is a misnomer because they were in common use for boiler firing at the time, and he never claimed their invention. The invention of the process was due to the efforts of The New Jersey Zinc Co. to find a profitable means of working the ores from Franklin and Sterling Hill, N. J. These are a mixture of franklinite, willemite, and zincite, containing about 20 per cent. of zinc. The first attempts were to make spelter, which were not successful, owing to the low grade of the ore and the fusibility of the residue. Failing in this, the next attempt was to make oxide in large muffles and reverberatory furnaces. This succeeded, although the cost of operation was high, the recovery low, and the quality of the product uncertain. In 1855, the new process was patented and has been in successful operation ever since. Essentially, the process is to spread a mixture of coal and ore on a body of burning coal on a perforated grate, and blow an excess of air through the grate. The zinc is reduced in contact with the coal, volatilized and burned by the excess of air in the upper part of the furnace and in the flues. It is then carried to the bag rooms by the excess air and products of combustion which are foreed through the flues by fans. In its main features, the process is the same today as at the time of its invention, but the details have been so modified that it would hardly be recognized by its originators. OrEs The process is applicable to all the oxidized ores of zinc and to roasted sulphides, provided the gangue is not so fusible as to leave a residue that is impervious to the blast. record with the Royal Flying Corps was considered a remarkable one, for he was at the front within two months of the date on which he was granted a commission, during which interval he took the prescribed technical course at Oxford, and aviation training at Netheravon and Bristol. On Sept. 14, 1916, he took his first flight over the German lines, when his engine stalled and he had to volplane down, fortunately landing on the French side of the lines. On Sept. 16, he went over the lines with six others, and not returning immediately with the others, was lost. He tried to make for the sea and come back following the course of a river, but when he did descend he found that he was 60 miles west of Paris and 100 miles south of his lines. He flew over to Paris and stayed there for the night, going back to his squadron the next morning. Then on Oct. 4, he was sent up at night for the first time, and in making a landing he passed the flares just as he struck the ground, which put him in total darkness. He struck something and his machine turned a complete somersault, which accident put him in the hospital for ten days. In December, 1916, he left the 21st Squadron and was transferred to the 24th, as the 21st was made an Artillery Squadron and he preferred to remain a fighting scout. In the same month, he was made Acting Flight Commander for about 6 weeks, and about April 3, 1917, his rank of Flight Commander was confirmed. The beginning of May he started to introduce a number of new machines for his squadron, these being of an entirely new type. On May 19, he was up with one of the machines in the evening, practising sharp turns and dives, when the wings suddenly crumpled up and he fell 700 ft., being killed instantly. He was buried in a French Cemetry at Monchy Lagache about 8 miles southeast of Perronne, and about 25 miles east of Amiens. Sergeant Herbert Moore Harbach Herbert Moore Harbach was born in Lebanon, Pa., Apr. 4, 1891, graduated from the Lebanon High School in 1911, and entered State College from which he received his degree of Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering in 1915. He was employed by the Lackawanna Iron Co., at Buffalo, W. Y., and was later transferred to their Lebanon plant to start up the newly erected benzol plant. He was later made foreman of the coke ovens, which position he held after it was bought by the Bethlehem Steel Co., and until he enlisted in the service of his country in September, 1917. He was stationed at Camp Meade, Md., until the spring of 1918, when he was transferred to the C. W.

To assist the taxpayer of the oil and gas industry in correctly and expeditiously preparing his Federal tax returns, the Bureau of Internal Revenue has prepared a "Manual for the Oil and Gas Industry Under the Revenue Act of 1918." Although the endeavor has been made to anticipate all questions that may be asked, it is recognized that such a manual is only general and cannot cover all cases that may exist. The Manual is based largely upon information gathered during the fall of the year 1918 by a corps of geologists, technologists, and engineers. The investigation was undertaken primarily to furnish a basis for arriving at valuations, and depletion and depreciation deductions in connection with oil and gas properties. All fields in the United States were canvassed. Records of production of thousands of properties were collected and tabulated. These were carefully classified and studied by the most competent and experienced men in the country and the average future production curves and tables of valuation data were produced as a result of this study. The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district, with proven recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 Mg (2.4 million oz) of gold, has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell mine, is a 70130 joint venture between Freeport Gold Co. and FMC Gold Corp., both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan Inc. and FMC Corp. The Jerritt Canyon district is located in the center of the Independence Mountains in north-central Elko County, Nevada, approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of the Carlin gold mine and 68 km (42 miles) north of Elko. Although the discovery of a commercial gold mine at Jerritt resulted from Freeport's exploration activities, the initial identification of a gold prospect in this area was a consequence of a program by FMC in the search for antimony. Their program was, in part, based on data in the Nevada Bureau of Mines Bulletin 61, "Antimony Deposits in Nevada." Work on the property began in 197 1 with geologic mapping followed by sampling and geochemical analyses. FMC geologists, including Robert Hawkins, Russell Hayden, and Hal Hurst recognized the striking similarity of the area to the geologic environment of Newmont's nearby Carlin gold deposit and soon focused on the gold potential. Increases in the price of gold served to stimulate interest and support for the exploration program. Geochemical samples were collected and analyzed for gold and trace elements usually associated with gold. A strong gold anomaly was found on the North Fork of Jerritt Canyon, which was called the Alchem anomaly. Drill-testing of this anomaly in 1973 revealed significant grades and thicknesses of gold mineralization in the lower portion of the Roberts Mountain formation. This initial discovery and subsequent close-spaced drilling proved the existence of several small pods of low-grade, gold-bearing material which cropped out at their up-dip edges, causing the surface anomaly. The mineralization was very encouraging, but was not, by itself, of economic importance from the standpoint of either grade or tonnage. Freeport Exploration Co. established a district office in Reno in late 1974 with responsibilities for exploration of hard minerals in the Basin and Range Province. Emphasis of the program was directed to the discovery of precious metal deposits. Enfield Bell, as District Manager for this new office, was particularly interested in the Independence Mountains and when the opportunity for a joint venture with FMC became available in 1976, it was aggressively pursued. Enfield Bell and David Stevens evaluated the FMC data and with the support of management formulated a bid in competition with 23 other companies. Freeport was selected by FMC as partner and a joint venture agreement was successfully negotiated. In mid-summer of 1976, Freeport Exploration Co. began an expanded program of detailed mapping and geochemical sampling under the direction of Bell and Stevens that led to new interpretations of the structural and alteration patterns. Hawkins' contribution during this period must be recognized since he not only was one of the original geologists assigned to the antimony and subsequently the gold investigations, but shortly after the start of the joint venture exploration, he was hired by Freeport Exploration Co. as the project geologist for the venture. Hawkins had studied the central Independence Mountains for his thesis and his understanding of the regional geology provided an excellent background for the continued exploration of the gold de- posits. His interpretation of the structure in the vicinity of the Alchem anomaly was of significant help in the Freeport exploration program. Drilling, based on this new under- standing of the geology, revealed the edge of the Marlboro Canyon ore body, which is now being exploited in the Bell mine.
