THE sessions of the Institute were opened on Tuesday evening, October 26th, at Garrett's Hall, by Mr. Charles A. Otis, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, who welcomed the Institute to Cleveland, and introduced Col. Charles Whittlesey, who ad¬dressed the Institute briefly on the coal deposits of Ohio. Col. Whittlesey described the situation and character of the coal-beds of the State, and gave a short history of the use of raw coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, and spoke of the excellent quality of metal produced. The aid that a body of scientific miners and metal¬lurgists were capable of giving in the development of coal and other mineral resources was dwelt upon, and the hope expressed that the visit of the Institute to Cleveland might be profitable as, well to its members as to the citizens of the State. The President, Mr. A. L. Holley, responded to the welcome of Mr. Otis and of Col. Whittlesey, and read an introductory address on Some Pressing Needs in the Iron and Steel Manufacture. The effect of ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid on chrysotile asbestos was investigated. Ultrasonic energy was effective in fiberization of chrysotile crudes as well as standard grades of milled asbestos fibers. Treated samples of several grades of milled fibers had increased wet bulk volumes and decreased settling and filtration rates compared to untreated fibers. Ultrasonics may be a method for fiberization of chrysotile without decreasing length or use of chemical additives that alter surface properties. Cavitation of the liquid on the surface of fiber bundles is believed to be the cause of the fiberization. It was found that ultrasonic energy greatly increased the rate of precipitation of latex on asbestos. When chrysotile asbestos fibers require additional opening or fiberization, the usual method employed is some type of high speed impact or grinding to open the fibers and produce a larger surface area. These methods always cause some degradation in length due to breaking of fibers. In addition, the efficiency of mechanical methods decreases as the diameter of fiber bundles decreases. Chemical methods have been proposed and it is claimed that fiberization down to individual fibers of 200-300 A diam is possible with some wetting agents. Discussion of this paper, submitted in duplicate prior to Mar. 15, 1964, will appear in SME Transactions, September 1964, and AIME Transactions, 1964, vol. 229. 50 pct of the weight of fiber treated, and some of the wetting agent remains on the surface of the chrysotile and cannot be removed by any solvent which does not destroy the asbestos.' This investigation was directed at determining whether ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid would be effective in fiberizing chrysotile asbestos. Samples of asbestos crudes and commercially milled fibers were treated; settling and filtration rates of treated and untreated milled fibers were obtained. EQUIPMENT A Westinghouse Corp. ultrasonic cleaning system WEHH was used in this investigation. See Table I for a breakdown of this ultrasonic unit. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Fiberization of Chrysotile Crudes: Samples of chrysotile crudes were pulled apart with tweezers so that coarse bundles of fiber approximately 1/16 in. in diam were obtained. The bundles were put into a bottle with 200 ml of methanol and the mixture placed into the ultrasonic tank for 30 min at a power output of 1200 w. The test was repeated using water instead of methanol. During the irradiation it was noted that the surfaces of the bundles were being fiberized. The liquid eventually became cloudy with dispersed solids. Fig. 1 is an electron micrograph of the fibers, some reduced to unit dimensions, and a fine material released by the ultrasonic energy. The platy particles in Fig. 1 were identified by electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis as brucite, Mg(OH)2, which must have been intergrown in the chrysotile crudes. Electron micrographs of bulk specimens of chrysotile have shown a fine material filling the interstices between tubular fibers.2,3 Electron diffraction patterns of the fine material collected after ultrasonic treatment indicate that it is amorphous. After decanting the solution, bundles of chrysotile remained somewhat decreased in diameter. Continuing the ultrasonic irradiation of the remaining material resulted in additional fiberization. The opening of the fibers occurred in both methanol and water. Cavitation of the liquid by the ultrasonic energy is undoubtedly responsible for the fiberization. The empirical equilibrium constantsd the heat of reaction for the reduction have been determined from 300° to 500°C. The mechanisms of the oxidation of uranium and magnesium from dilute bismuth solutions have been investigated. The kinetics of some of the reactions were affected by air adsorbed on the uranium oxides. THE Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor studied at Brook-haven National Laboratory uses a solution of uranium in bismuth as the fuel. Corrosion and stability problems require that the fuel solution contain corrosion inhibitors and deoxidants. Of the additives tested, magnesium has been found to be the best deoxidant and zirconium the best corrosion inhibitor in bismuth. Some experiments1 indicate that magnesium may play a secondary role in increasing the effectiveness of zirconium in inhibiting corrosion. The work reported here was intended to determine the relative concentrations of Mg and U required to prevent oxidation of the uranium fuel in the event of an air leak. In addition, an attempt was made to identify some of the mechanisms of the oxidation and reduction reactions occurring in the liquid bismuth solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus and Procedure—The equipment shown in Fig. 1 was designed so that the reaction kinetics could be studied as functions of temperature, melt composition, pressure, and flow rate. At the start of a run, the 10-liter bell jar (F) is removed by opening the bottom Dresser fitting (L), and the bismuth and additives are placed in a pyrex crystallizing dish (I). The bell jar is replaced, the system is evacuated to 10-5 to 10-6 mm Hg and then the heater (J) is turned on. When the selected temperature is reached, the oxidizing gas is admitted to the system to the desired pressure as read on the manometer (D). Gas is introduced through the slide tube (Q) which has a pyrex frit (R) sealed to its bottom. Stirring is accomplished by immersing the end of the tube in the melt. To maintain a constant pressure under flow the input and evacuation rates must be equalized. To obtain this condition stopcock (C) is closed and flowmeters (B) are matched. The reaction is "stopped" by closing the inlet flowmeter and quickly evacuating the system. To obtain a liquid metal sample, the system is evacuated with the sampler positioned near the surface of the liquid. The sampler, Fig. 2, is then immersed until its thermocouple reading matches thermocouple (G) Fig. 1. The system is then pressurized with helium which forces the solution through the frit. Twenty to 30 min elapsed between the time the system was evacuated and sampled. During evacuation and pressurization of the system, the temperature variations did not exceed ± 5°C. While bubbling occurred the temperature remained constant to within 1/2 oC. The volume of the equipment was determined by adding a known volume of air at atmospheric pressure to the evacuated system and noting the resulting pressure.

The kinetics of sulfidization of hematite (Fe203) by H2S gas at various partial pressures have been determined over the temperature range of 170° to 500°C. The process was controlled by thin films of pyrite (FeS2) and troilite (FeS) which were protective and formed diffusional layers. At higher temperatures the thermodynamic drive to form FeS2 decreased, and consequently the rate of formation of FeS, decreased. Conditions for the development of thin layers of FeSz consisting of 10 to 100 atomic diameters are presented. Laboratory flotation results on synethetic ores indicate floatability identical to that of pyrite of normal xanthate flotation. The prospect of high-temperature sulfidization of metal oxides using H2S, S, or other sulfur bearing compounds is intriguing as a potential activation process for flotation since the thermodynamics are very favorable for a large number of systems. If the kinetic parameters are sufficiently well understood it may be possible to provide surface sulfide layers a few angstroms thick, thus imparting normal sulfide floatability characteristics to the oxide. For thin layers the total sulfur pick-up would be small except for very high surface area materials but in most cases this sulfur could be readily removed by roasting if necessary. The general reactions for the sul-fidization of metal oxide MxO, to a metal sulfide MpSq using H2S may be written for the three conditions py > xq; py < xq; and py = xq: A large thermodynamic advantage is obtained in many systems because of the relatively large negative free energy of formation of H,O compared to H,S. For the temperature range 2S° to 1500°C &apos; where AFOis the standard free energy and T is absolute temperature. As is evident from Eqs. 4 and 5, the free energy of formation of H ,0 is approximately 35 to 37 kilocalories per mole greater than that for H,S over broad variations of temperature. For oxide-sulfide systems as outlined above, sulfidization may be expected to occur for the conditions: Groups I and 111: that is, if the terms on the right are more negative than those on the left the reaction is expected to occur thermodynamically. The following report is published for the information of the members Meetings. Two meetings for the reading and discussion of papers, etc., have been held during the year 1906-namely, the Ninetieth meeting, held February 21st to 24th at Bethlehem, Pa., and the Ninety-first meeting, held July 24th to 27th in London, England, in connection with the meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute. The proceedings of these meetings, including descriptions of the entertainments and excursions connected therewith, have already been published and distributed to the members of the Institute; the Bethlehem meeting in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 9, May, 1906, pp. 497 to 508, and the London meeting in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 12, November, 1906, pp. 809 to 908. The proceedings of the London meeting were published separately and distributed among the many individuals and concerns whose cordial friendship and delightful hospitality contributed so largely to the success of the visits in London and environs and the excursions in England, Scotland and Germany. At the Bethlehem meeting, 37 papers and discussions were presented and the names of 198 members and guests were regis¬tered at the Institute headquarters ; this number, however, does not represent all who were present at the sessions and excur¬sions. At the London meeting, 26 papers and discussions were presented, not including 5 of the papers and discussions read before the Iron and Steel Institute at the joint session with the American Institute of Mining Engineers, which, by a mutual agreement between the Councils of the two Institutes, have been selected to be republished in the Bi-Monthly Bulletin and Transactions of the Institute. The number of members and guests of the two Institutes registered at the London headquarters was 908, and of this number 131 were from America. This list does not include the names of all who

When we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liège, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a model for such undertakings. It is known as ((Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d&apos; Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A12Si4010(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mobs&apos; scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyro-phyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constitu-ents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 percent and the alumina from 22 to 33 percent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent.

About half a million sucker-rod pumps are installed in oil wells in the U. S. alone. In Venezuela, too, the system is widely used; some 5,000, or 90 percent, of Cia. Shell de Venezuela&apos;s wells produce a total of 400,000 BOPD by this method. Most of the crude pumped is viscous, gassy and contains relatively small amounts of free water. API gravities vary from 90 to 16O; dead oil viscosities vary from 10 to 10,000 cp at the pump; and GOR&apos;s range from 100 to 2,000 cu ft/bbl. Pumps are set at depths ranging from a few hundred to 6,000 ft; the average setting depth is about 2,500 ft. From the literature, it appears that although recent years have seen significant progress toward understanding the rod pumping system as a whole, relatively little attention has been paid to those key items, the sucker-rod pump and the subsurface gas separator or gas anchor. Perhaps because of proration in the U. S., pump manufacturers have seemingly concerned themselves more with the durability of their product, achieved mainly through robust design and metallurgical know-how, than with its working efficiency. In 1963, CSV commenced a major rehabilitation and expansion of its heavy oil fields along the Bolivar Coast. The advent of the more efficient gravel-packed completion and of large-scale thermal recovery (mainly steam soak) operations resulted in well potentials *Now with B. I. P. M., The Hague, The Netherlands. greater than pump capacities. Hence, an urgent need arose to improve over-all pump efficiencies and to attack those special problems related to the production of both the extremely viscous and the hot, steam-laden crudes that formed an increasing proportion of the total stream. There followed a detailed investigation and testing program, carried out in close cooperation with a major pump manufacturer. This culminated in the introduction to the oil industry of a new line of sucker-rod pumps. Early Investigations and Experiments Field Tests Extensive field tests were carried out in three primary Bolivar Coast wells with an in-situ dead oil viscosity ranging from 400 to 6,000 cp. In these installations provision was made to (1) monitor bottom-hole pressures below, in and above the pump by means of pressure transducers, and record casing- and tubing-head pressures continuously; (2) measure accurately the annulus gas, as well as measure the tubing gas and liquid production from the well; (3) take special PVT samples of the well fluid; (4) measure power consumption of the prime mover; and (5) measure the rod loads at the polished rod. A typical test installation is illustrated in Fig. 1. It was established from the pressure transducers that with viscous oils, there is considerable flow resistance across the pump and gas anchor assembly. THE purpose of ore dressing is to separate the rough ore into one or several valuable concentrates and a discarded tailing. The first step is to crush the ore so that the resulting particles may be individually valuable or worthless. The next step generally has to be a sizing operation, because the property by which concentration is effected depends on the size of the in-dividual mineral particles as well as on their physical properties. These two effects may cancel each other if a preliminary sizing is not resorted to. Sizing is accomplished by screening or classifying. Screening depends almost solely on the dimensions of the particles; classifying depends also on the specific gravity of the particles and the viscosity of the settling medium in which the classifying operation is conducted. Classification, therefore, is to a certain extent a con-centrating operation as well as a sizing operation. Before the days of concentration by flotation, the available screens were mechanically poor. As a result classification was employed for sizing in the range. of comparatively coarse sands (table feeds). In recent years, the advent of stage-grinding to flotation size has brought about the development of good screens, which are more economical than classifiers down to about 20, -mesh. With decreasing size at which separation is to be made, screens become increasingly uneconomical, while classifiers become increasingly economical. The line of demarcation between the respective fields of screening .and classification is, therefore, fairly sharp. With the development of processes of concentrating finely comminuted ore, the need for classifiers or other sizing devices operating so as to make efficiently a split at a very fine size has become increasingly apparent. Such classifiers might be termed de-slimers, from the fact that they separate a material having a slimy ap-pearance from one having the characteristics of a sand. Sizing-tests are carried on by means of testing sieves, the finest of which have apertures of about 1/500 of an inch. The 200-mesh sieve, which has an average open-ing of 0.0029 linear inches is generally considered the limit of practical test-sizing. As a result, little is known of minus 200-mesh material and the advantages of classifying concentrator feeds within the minus 200-mesh range has been overlooked. An extension of the -present sieve scale beyond the 200-mesh screen is given in Table 1.

ThOUGH at present there is a wide range of possibilities for the quantitative determination of preferred orientations, pole figures of identical specimen material have not been determined by different methods as yet.&apos;&apos;&apos; In this paper a comparison of (Ill), (200), and (220) pole figures is presented which were obtained from a 95 pct cold-rolled high-purity cop- per sheet (99.9998 pct Cu), by three different methods. The three methods are: a) The combined X-ray reflection-transmission technique of plane samples by schulz3 and Decker, Asp, and Harker. 4 A Siemens texture goniometer was used. The experimental details are described elsewhere. 6 b) The X-ray reflection technique of spherical samples by Jetter and Boric.&apos; A Siemens texture goniometer with some modifications was used. Born, March 28, 1853 Died July 23, 1916 On July 25, 1916, the Board of Directors adopted the following minute and directed that it be entered upon the records of the Board & published in the Bulletin of the Institute, and thereof be sent to the family of Mr. Kirchhoff: Charles Kirchhoff was one of the oldest, most widely known and most highly esteerned members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. On his return in 1875 from a European course of study, to begin a highly successful professional career, he joined the Institute, then just commencing to acquire both national and international recognition. He became at once, and-for more than 40 years continued to be, its earnest , and active supporter, serving it as Manager, Councilor or Director for terms aggregating 9 years,-as Vice-President for 2 years, and twice as President for a year. During the critical period of the erection of the United Engineering Society&apos;s building, and the transfer of the Institute to permanent head-quarters therein, Mr. Kirchhoff was its efficient representative in the United Engineering Society, and on the Building Committee. In 1910, amid the congratulations of colleagues, employees, and innumerable friends, Mr. Kirchhoff retired from active business as Vice- President and General Manager of a great technical publishing company. Yet he sacrificed of his well-earned leisure yet one more year, to serve the Institute as President through 1911.

Coprecipitation of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes has been applied to floccula-tion of several mineral systems. Results obtained in a study of the flocculation of kaolinite and hematite suspensions of polycationic and polyanionic electrolytes are presented. Greatly increased settling rates were observed following precipitation of positive and negative polyelectrolytes on the surface of finely divided minerals in aqueous suspension. The ratios of polycationic to polyanionic electrolytes required to produce maximum sedimentation have been shown to correspond closely with the equivalence points obtained by light scattering studies of systems containing the positive and negative polyelectrolytes by themselves. DISPERSION of colloids has been of interest to surface chemists for many years. Flocculation studies have been employed to evaluate the limits of colloid stability. In water suspensions, colloids become unstable and flocculate when the 5 potential, the potential of the kinetic solvation sheath, falls to a value at which van der Waals forces may act to draw the particles together. This may happen through an adjustment of the pH of the suspension or by addition of a salt. Optimum conditions for rapid formation of large flocs are found in the region of minimum < potential. In addition to these well known considerations, colloids in water suspensions are known to be flocculated by certain large organic macromolecules. These polyelectrolytes in some cases minimize the 5 potential and in other instances increase the attractive forces by supplying sites for hydrogen bonding.&apos; Use of organic polyelectrolytes in flocculation of mineral colloids has increased rapidly in recent years. These materials are now recognized as indispensable aids to fluid-solid separations in many extractive metallurgical operations. They have been found to increase both the settling rate in thickeners and the filtration rate of filters. In the elucidation of the characteristics of these organic reagents as floc-culants in this laboratory, it was discovered that interaction of certain polyelectrolytes had a surprisingly good effect on flocculation of mineral colloids. Experimental Procedure: The anionic flocculants used in this study were Lytron 886 and 887, produced by Monsanto Chemical Co. Both reagents are copolymers of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride. Lime is added to Lytron 886, whereas Lytron 887 is all organic. These reagents possess two carboxyl groups for each acetate group and are therefore anionic in character. The cationic reagents used were the Peter Cooper Co. 1-X and 2-X glues. The structures are not definitely known, but the re- agents are amines and are cationic in character. The glues were prepared in the chrome-alum form. Both types of reagents may be classified as polyelectrolytes in that they are high molecular weight polymers and ionize in water. All data presented are in terms of sedimentation rate, measured in 250-ml glass-stoppered graduated cylinders. With suitable precautions such measurements are fairly reproducible and provide a sensitive means for selecting important parameters such as PH, reagent concentration, and floc size and density. Agitation was standardized with five complete end over end cycles of the suspensions in the stoppered graduated cylinders.

THE ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst.

DURING the course of an investigation on the high-temperature creep behavior of TD Nickel* (Ni + 2) vol pct ThO2), it was observed that the creep fractures were similar in appearance to low-temperature ductile fibrous fractures and creep ruptures by cavitation. Microfractographs of fibrous ruptures are typically characterized by a dimpled appearance, with second-phase particles frequently found near the bottom of the dimples.&apos;-4 These somewhat resemble creep ruptures by cavitation, in that fracture occurs by void formation, with the subsequent growth and final merging of the voids to form a complete fracture.&apos; It is the purpose of this communication to describe the creep fracture of TD nickel and suggest a mechanism for the rupturing process. The discussion is relevant to material crept to fracture in vacuo at a constant stress of 18,000 psi, over the temperature range 900" to ll00°C. The material used in this investigation was 1/2-in.-diam bar stock supplied by Du Pont, contain- ing 2.3 vol pct Tho2. The final fabrication treatment consisted of -95 pct reduction by swaging followed by a 1-hr anneal at 1000°C. Transmission and replica electron microscopy revealed that the material had a fibered structure with a transverse grain size of -1 µ and a longitudinal grain size of 10 to 15 µ. Selected-area diffraction indicated that the fiber axis was parallel to (00l), in agreement with the results of Inman et a1.6 The thoria particle size varied from 80 to 1000Å, with an average size of 400Å, and the mean particle spacing was about 1200Å. The remarkable structural stability7 was confirmed by annealing for 6 hr at 1300°C (about &apos; 0.9 the absolute melting point). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the only structural change was a slight decrease in dislocation density. Furthermore, recrystallization or grain growth during creep has not been observed. All specimens were annealed in vacuo at 1300°C for 3 hr prior to creep testing. The copper deposit at White Pine, Michigan, from which a little more than 5 per cent of United States primary copper currently is produced, is a large stratiform orebody, 4 to 25 feet thick and several miles across. The present ore column, containing about 1.2 per cent copper as chalcocite and native copper, is confined to the basal beds of the Nonesuch Shale. This upper Keweenawan (Upper Precambrian) formation is a distinctive gray siltstone unit, about 600 feet thick, overlying and overlain by thick red-bed sequences. All these rocks contain abundant volcanic debris, but the latest known igneous activity within 50 miles antedated the Nonesuch Shale. The rocks are unmetamorphosed and only moderately deformed, mainly by tilting and faults. Pyrite, presumably syngenetic, is the only prominent sulfide throughout most of the Nonesuch Shale. The basal beds of the formation, however, contain disseminated copper minerals instead of pyrite and constitute the cupriferous zone. On a regional scale, the top of the cupriferous zone cuts across bedding, and ranges from an inch or so above the base of the formation in some areas to more than 50 feet in others. However, within the cupriferous zone the distribution of copper shows remarkable stratigraphic control. Certain beds are copper-rich compared to the beds that lie between them and the differences persist throughout the White Pine region. Several darkgray thinly laminated beds in the lower 10 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch Shale are rich enough and sufficiently close enough together to constitute a mineable thickness where they lie within the cupriferous zone. Pyrite is the characteristic sulfide of the Nonesuch Shale as a whole. The principal sulfide mineral of the cupriferous zone at the base of the formation is chalcocite. The succession of minerals outward and upward from the center of the cupriferous zone is native copper-chalcocite-bornite-chalcopyrite- pyrite. The bornite and chalcopyrite are confined to a narrow fringe at the margin of the cupriferous zone. This pattern of mineral zones is believed to represent reaction between syngenetic pyrite and introduced copper. The main copper mineralization is independent of structure and apparently antedates deformation. Details of the geometry of the cupriferous zone indicate the possibility that copper was introduced from the underlying sandstone prior to lithification. The source of the mineralizing solutions and their copper is not known.

EVEN though the world has not been crying for more copper for the last three or four years there has been some important mill and smelter construction. Discovery and development of large new high-grade copper deposits in Africa has led to the construction of extensive reduction facilities there, prominent among which is the concentrator and smelter of the Rhokana Corporation at N&apos;Kana. Northern Rhodesia. The 3000-ton concentrator adjoins the central shaft. A little over half a mile to the southeast, at an altitude of 40,010 ft., is the smelter, designed on the site by 1. H. Wynne. It is arranged primarily to treat N&apos;Kana copper concentrates, but can also handle concentrates and direct-smelting ore from outside sources. Excavations were started late in 1930; concrete was first poured on Jan. 6. 1931; and the first blister cop¬per was cast on March 1.9, 1932, less than fifteen months later. During this period, which included several months of heavy tropical rains, some 10,000 cu. yd. of concrete was poured and 41000 tons of structural steel erected under the supervision of construction engineer, A. Ek, with a labor force of 60 to 30 Europeans and about 300 natives. The steelwork was fabricated by Head Wrightson & Co. in England, and the boiler plant equipment furnished and erected by the International Combustion Co. Ltd.

THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, pro- [ ] duced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. [ ] The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. , I). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which, thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes, where drilled at various points and the drillers&apos; log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. PROPERTIES OT THE ST. THESE observations of the metal-working industries of Europe are based on a three months&apos; tour of eight countries of Europe, in which 75 industrial establishments were visited in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Austria and Switzerland during the summer of 1927. Since the Western Electric Co. is a large consumer of copper and brass, these industries were of particular interest and differences in practices were of keen interest to us.

CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Cananea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geo- logic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline.
