Considerable difference of opinion seems to exist as to whether the rate of air flow when a fan is placed on a given duct should be determined by the use of static pressure or total pressure characteristics. A little study will show that both methods are correct. Assume that a fan is connected to a duct by an expansion piece as shown in Fig. 1, and that steady flow is established. Considering the atmospheric pressure as zero pressure, let the static head at the outlet of the fan be h and the velocity at this point be vl. The total head at the outlet is then h + „"• The total head at this point must be equal to the total head at the end of the duct plus the losses that have occurred between the two points. Left be the friction loss in the straight duct, s the shock loss in the dif- fuser, and v2 the velocity at the end of the duct. Then ig. 1.—Fan on duct. If these two curves are plotted on the same chart, the intersection indicates the rate of flow when steady flow is established. We may look at this problem in another way. The static pressure at the outlet of the fan is the static pressure of the fan and it is also the static resistance of the duct from that point to the end. The friction in the straight duct is f. If the duct were the same area as the fan outlet, would be the static resistance of the whole duct system. In the present case, however, this resistance is decreased by the change of velocity head into static head in the expansion piece. If conversion were perfect, the static pressure recovered would be

For his contributions to the field of mining geology, a striking example being his brilliant inte.rpretation of the complex geologic history of the San Manuel District (Pinal County, Arizona) which resulted in the discovery of the Kalamazoo orebody, and for his lecture, "Copper Resources in 1970." On a low desert ridge six miles south of Cairo lie the remains of the world's earliest known mining town, Maadi of predynastic Egypt. Copper artifacts, including ingots and an ax head which was spoiled in casting, indicate that copper ore was smelted in Maadi, and radiocarbon dating has placed the activity at least as early as 3300 B.C. This is the oldest documented date for the use of smelted copper, the first industrial metal used by man. Copper was mined and smelted almost as early in Asia Minor and on the island of Cyprus, but the greatest development of the budding copper industry was in Egypt, where specific historical records show that about 10,000 tons of copper metal were produced in the period from 1850-1580 B.C. Contrast this production of 35 tons per year with the present world production of about 7 million tpy. Evolution of the Copper Industry The copper ore mined by the ancients was high grade, and the copper produced was expensive. The copper industry began with narrow high-grade veins, but has evolved to the point where massive earth-moving equipment can be operated in huge, low-grade open pits. Indian pits dug before 3000 B.C. in the Lake Superior district were in ore which averaged 15% Cu. His- torical research done by Arthur Brant has shown that copper cost in the Middle East in 1840 B.C. in terms of 1970 labor dollars was about $25 per lb. The copper mined in northern Europe in 1540 in the time of Georgius Agricola averaged about 8% Cu, and the cost in 1970 labor dollars was about $10 per lb. Average ore grade had dropped to about 6% Cu in 1890, and the cost of copper in the U.S. in 1970 dollars was about 45¢ per lb. Butte, Mont., was a good example of the efficiently operated vein mines of this time. The uncertainty of finding the exact equivalents fortechnical expressions in different languages has led me to think that a glossary of furnace-terms would be useful to members of the profession. I was led, some years ago, to prepare a small one, which has been found so very useful, that I have arranged one for presentation to the Institute, for four different 'types of furnaces, in the hope that it may prove of use to those who are in the habit of consulting foreign technical journals, I was further induced to make the attempt in the hope that it might tend to make the terminology less complicated than it now is, and also to make it more uniform over larger districts. The idea of referring to a drawing which expresses exactly what is meant, resulted from the necessity of presenting such subjects to students, and will, it is hoped, prove much more useful than the mere dictionary arrangement in alphabetical order. The drawing of the blast-furnace was prepared for me by Mr. J. P. Witherow, of Pitsburgh ; the drawing of the open-hearth furnace by Mr. S. T. Wellman, of Cleveland, and the reverberatory furnace by Mr. John Fritz, of Bethlehem. The bloomary-furnace is taken from my own paper* on Bloomaries, but, in order to have a complete furnace, I have introduced into the drawing of those used at Saranac the guard-plate used at Ironville. The interest which has been taken in the preparation of this paper by those gentlemen who have contributed the drawings, has been supplemented by gentlemen in Europe who have taken the trouble to read the proof. In France it has been read by Mr. Lodin, of the School of Mines, and by Mr. Chaper, of Paris, and in Germany by Dr. Wedding, of Berlin, and Mr. Luhrman, of Osnabruck. The preparation of the paper has been much more difficult than was anticipated, and its value has been very much enhanced by Dr. Raymond's kind assistance and cooperation; and to him, as well as to all the other gentlemen, Iam very much indebted. In 1943, Illinois produced 82,256,000 bbl. of oil, or 5.5 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production. This represents a decline of 23 per cent from 1942, when the total Illinois production was 106,ggo,o~~ bbl. and Illinois ranked fifth. The daily average production for 1943 was approximately 225,000 bbl. This paper is limited primarily to a description of dry coal-cleaning processes in which air currents are used to effectuate a separation between coal and refuse. Processes depending mainly on differences in the coefficient of friction, resilience and shape are not described unless the use of air is necessary for the proper functioning of the process. The air cleaning of coal is of primary importance to the coal industry of the United States. From figures presented in the 1941 edition Mechannual, it is estimated that at least 12 million tons of bituminous coal was cleaned in the United States during 1940 by machines using air as the separating medium. One of the current problems confronting the coal-preparation engineer is the dry cleaning of small sizes and slacks. Progress in machine development for the cleaning of small sizes has been slow in recent years in the United States of America; it has been much more rapid in Britain and on the European continent. This paper does not attempt an exhaustive survey of all these developments, and only machines and processes that have found considerable commercial application are cited. Further, no critical analysis has been made of the theory involved in the separation of coal from refuse by processes using air as the separating medium other than that necessary for an understanding of particular machine designs and applications. The possibility of using air for the separation of coal from refuse was recognized early by mining men and many attempts were made to develop commercial machines. The ingenuity of the early experimenters is to be marveled at in view of their lack of knowledge of the theoretical principles involved. As in other arts, practice has largely preceded theory. Yet, science and practice play a game of leap frog, now one ahead, then the other; the careful experimenmenter governs his efforts along practical lines by adapting his experiments to the limits prescribed by scientific laws. By first studying developments and the theory involved, it is not only possible to adapt processes to new uses but also to reduce materially operating cost and to build larger units without costly failures. Although many inventors have applied for patents for separating minerals by the use of air currents, the literature in regard to coal is meager. Berrisford2 describes briefly some of the early attempts to clean coal without the use of water. Several of the examples cited by him are reproduced herein. Fig. I shows a machine used for grinding and; izing, in which rollers running in a pan with a perforated bottom and fan opening on the side crushed the coal, which was then carried by the air currents to a settling chamber. The heaviest particles dropped out first and the light ones farthest away, as shown. In the year 1864, a machine was made that could be used as a sizer or to separate dirt from coal with a sized feed (Fig. 2).

Discussion of the paper of W. P. LASS, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1915, pp. 1443 to 1447. ROBERT M. KEENEY, Somersville, Conn. (communication to the Secretary *).-There is not only a possibility of improvement in present methods of treatment of the byproducts of refining in the cyanide plant by the use of the electric furnace, but also in melting and refining of gold precipitate. This interesting paper by Mr. Lass shows an electric furnace in successful operation in a large plant for the treatment of by-products. Electric melting of cyanide precipitate is a cheaper form of treatment in many cases than any of the combustion methods now used because of the high cost of oil, coke or coal in many camps, while on the other hand electric power may be had cheaply, especially in a place where there is possibility of development of high-head hydro-electric plants for power purposes. Also, if the oil-fired tilting furnace is used for direct melting of the precipitate, as is the case at many small mills, a great saving in cost is made by the use of the electric furnace because of the high crucible cost in melting with the tilting furnace. A study of this paper indicates the cost of the operation approximately. Consider all the fluxes to be turned in as byproducts and coke at $18 per ton.

Cortez Gold Mines operated a conventional 2,100 mtpd (2, 300 stpd) cyanidation plant until the 5 million ton ore body was worked out in 1973. (See Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice by F. W. McQuiston, Jr. and R. S. Shoemaker, Society of Mining Engineers, AIME 1975.) Sub-grade material was dump leached at the mine -mill location in 1971, and the resulting pregnant solutions were added to the feed in the plant's Merrill-Crowe precipitation unit for gold recovery. In early 1973, however, Cortez put into operation their Gold Acres mine which was located about 13 krn (8 miles) to the west of the 'Cortez mine. Economics at that time dictated the heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ore body with the higher grade being trucked to the Cortez plant for milling. Leach ore was moved directly from the open pits to prepared leach pads located on a gently sloping terrain of 570 grade. Preliminary pad preparation at the leach site included removal of vegetation which was composed of sagebrush and grading of the base. Pads were comprised of mostly minus 74 micron (200 mesh) materials and were made of clay-silt or slime tailings spread on the pad area in thin 50 to 75 mm (2 to 3 in. ) layers, compacted with a vibrating roller compactor to a depth of about 380 mm (15 in.). This was followed with a 100 mrn (4 in.) layer of coarse rock to prevent erosion on the pad and to allow solutions to move laterally under the heaps. Leach solutions normally traveled the length of the heaps and were collected in plastic-lined ditches from which they flowed by gravity to the pregnant solution storage pond. Both pregnant and barren ponds were constructed in the same manner as the leach pads - being lined with compacted tailings or clay silts. The Gold Acres facility required pregnant solution storage of 6 million liters (1.6 million gal) and barren storage of 3.8 million liters (1.0 million gal) designed to handle two to three days of heap drainage or to retain run-off from a major rainfall. Various heap heights were tried including 3, 6, and 9 meters (10, 20, and 30 ft), with a 6 m (20 ft) height selected. A method of top slicing has been devised at the Miami Copper Co.'s mine at Miami, Aria., which differs radically in some ways from the customary methods of top slicing. The area of that section of the orebody in which top slicing is used is about 800 ft. square. The ore, while for the most part soft, is, nevertheless, considerably harder than the capping. The latter is siliceous, seldom containing any clay or other binding material, and breaks into fine particles so that it runs like sand if given the opportunity. Because of these facts, and because the ore is above the average grade of the mine ore, it has been mined by top slicing. Haulage levels are opened up 150 ft. apart, vertically, with two sub-levels between at 50-ft. intervals, to facilitate the putting up of ore chutes. These sublevels are used during slicing for distributing air in the ventilation system. On the haulage level the drifts are spaced on 50-ft. centers, and raises along these drifts are also spaced on 50-ft. centers, except the incline raises as hereafter noted. The raises are cribbed where necessary. Where the wear will be excessive, 1/4-in. iron plates are spiked to the top of every third set of cribbing, for its protection. When top slicing was first used, an attempt was made to carry a slicing face from fifty to several hundred feet long. Timber and other supplies were brought in through long drifts from an auxiliary shaft. Great difficulty was experienced in keeping these drifts open, the side pressure breaking the posts and the top weight breaking both caps and posts. Furthermore, the men could not work efficiently while these drifts were being repaired. The slicing faces advanced irregularly, due to varying conditions, and in many ways the results were not all that could be desired. It was then decided to divide the slicing area into blocks 200 ft. square and this was later changed to 250 ft. square. At the center of each block a two-compartment raise is put up as a supply raise, the compartments being 2 ft. 6 in. and 4 ft. by 4 ft. 4 in., the smaller being used as a manway. There are some simple theoretical approaches to pillar design but they leave much to be desired. There are also more complex theoretical approaches, but at this time the most realistic approach is to go into the mines and observe and measure how real pillars are performing under real conditions; to allow the information thus gathered to ferment in our minds - then to project the behaviour of those pillars into our new designs and mining techniques, probably with no formulas at all. Examples, from half-a-dozen different mines, show how a simple- minded approach, through observation and measurement, led to changes in pillar design which often contradicted the textbook but made very significant contributions to mining safety, efficiency and costs. The good news is that we know a lot more about pillar design than we realize. We have, between us, looked at millions of pillars of all kinds, under all conditions, but we have overlooked what they are trying to tell us. We can take problem situations and turn them into opportunities and, in that way, become better stewards of the resources which have been given to us.

THE plummet lamp, to which I called the attention of the Institute, at the Bethlehem meeting, in August, 1871, with the improvement of the compensating ring, suggested by Mr. Heller, having come into general use for mine surveying in this country, and my attention having been called to the fact that it could not be employed in mines in which there was danger of meeting with fire-damp, I have so modified it that it can be used in all cases with safety. Mining engineers, who are in active practice in those districts where fire-damp is met with in the mines (and I am sorry to say it is becoming much more common in the anthracite regions), know how dangerous their work is when they are called upon to survey such mines, particularly when they are obliged to run lines in those parts of a mine which have been unworked, since by opening of doors, brattice, etc., to get the sights, they are liable to disarrange the currents of air, and cause any fire-damp that may have accumulated in the old workings to find its way into the levels, etc., where the party is at work. It is, therefore, very dangerous to leave an open light (such as the original form of plummet lamp) in an old breast or gangway, even when the safety lamp has shown that no fire-damp is present, for the opening of the doors, etc., may drive the fire-damp to the light, and thus endanger the lives of the engineers. The improved form of plummet lamp, now shown to you, can be used either with or without the safety apparatus. Upon the top of the plumb-bob portion of the old lamp a screw is cut, upon which a ring A is screwed. (See Plate II.) On the external cylindrical part of this ring two small conical holes are drilled, 180° apart. The compensating ring, by which the plumb-bob part of the lamp is suspended, passes over the ring A, and is fastened to it by two small screws having conical points, which fit into the conical holes in the ring A. The safety apparatus resembles, to a certain extent, that of the Mueseler lamp. It consists of a ring B and plate C, which are united by four rods. The plate C has a cylindrical hole in the middle, and four apertures distributed radially around it. There is, however, little unity of purpose or generality in most of the studies and, because the number of variables is large, the results often are not applicable to the problems that arise in practice. Furthermore, the customary expression of the effect of different variables as separate curves or as three-dimensional diagrams with time, temperature and the dependent variables as coordinates, renders the task of selecting the optimum time and temperature of precipitation treatment, with respect to their simultaneous but unequal etfect on the various properties, exceedingly difficult. The introduction of precipitation treatments to raise the yield strength of 24s-type alloys has created a need for a method of correlating and summarizing the effect of time and temperature on the mechanical properties and susceptibility to inter-crystalline corrosion. Correlation is particularly desirable because the choice of time and temperature is of necessity a compromise to achieve the best possible combination of properties, and the optimum conditions cannot he accurately specified unless the data are in a form in which the alternatives can be readily compared. Therefore, the work described here was undertaken to find a common relationship that would be capable of expressing the effect of precipitation time and temperature on the various properties and by means of which the relative effects could be correlated and their interpretation facilitated. Review of Previous Work In connection with an investigation of the interrelation of age-hardening and creep performance of nickel-silicon-copper alloys, Jenkins and Bucknalll demonstrated that the time required to attain maximum hardness and tensile strength could be expressed by a relationship of the form: t = K • io"^ (i) where t is the time in hours and T the temperature of aging, expressed in degrees absolute, and m and K are constants. They also pointed out that this expression is analogous to that which describes the change of the diffusion coefficient D with temperature; namely, D = Ae-~/m (2) Later, Cohen used this relationship in studies of the mechanism of age-hardening of a silver.rich copper alloyZ and of duralumin.3

FIFTEEN years ago, in his presidential address before the Washington Academy of Sciences,1 Alfred H. Brooks said: "Applied geology can only maintain its present high position by continuing the researches which advance the knowledge of basic principles. Future progress in applied geology depends on progress in pure geology." Early in 1927, Dr. David White, then chairman of the Division of Geology and Geography of the National Research Council, appointed a committee "On the Processes of Ore Deposition," which was the first recognition by the Council of this branch of applied geology. This committee will not be able to solve the many complex problems involved; it can only clear the way, survey the field, state the problems and encourage systematic research. This short paper aims to outline and to analyze the present status of this kind of geological research, to ascertain the quality of the work and to suggest lines that might profitably be followed. INCREASING DEMAND FOR GEOLOGISTS Economic geology, or the art of geology, could develop only after the principles of geology and mineralogy had been established. Before that time it was merely a collection of trade rules accompanied by more or less wild speculations. Thus we observe the beginnings of economic geology in the period 1770-1820. Soon afterwards, the State Surveys were established in this country, with the realization that the natural resources should be investigated and described. Geology was hardly yet equal to the task of scientific research in relationships and genesis, however, and there followed a period of discouragement and stagnation. In the meanwhile, pure geology had again registered progress, and, based on its principles and also on the rapid mining development in the Cordilleran region, the present phase of the study of ore deposits began to take form. Raphael Pumpelly, S. F. Emmons and G. F. Becker were among the pioneers in this movement. The United States Geological Survey was organized. Ore deposits were scientifically described and studied along lines of structure and mineralogy; theories of genesis were advanced, not always permanent but based on sound induction.

At the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute, Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, in the course of his remarks on some peculiarities in the composition of irons, alluded to the so-called " bucltshot" iron, and exhibited a specimen of this material. He said that when the small granules, or shot, were separatetl from the mass, they could be flattencd under the hammer, and inferred that these particles had been decarburized by the blast before sinking into the hearth of the furnace, and thus we had the exceptional production of wrought iron in the blast furnace. I have recently obtained a characteristic specimen of this variety of iron from one of the furnaces at Orbisona, Pa. Considerable uncertainty existed as to its true nature and the conditions of its production. Its weight seemed to preclude the idea that it containetl much or any slag, yet its lack of strength indicated that it was not homogeneous cast iron. At times considerable quantities had been produced, which could only be utilized by charging in the furnace and remelting. The specimen, on the freshly fractured surfacc, appeared to consist of flattened globules of iron cemented together by a bluish material which one would naturally suppose to be slag, and qualitative examination for lime strengthened this supposition. It was quite difficult to obtain drillings, as there was a tendency to split in several directions as soon as pressure mas applied; but enough was obtained to undertaltc quantitative determinations. They were found to consist of two portions—one attracted by the magnet, and the other not. By repeated separation the magnetic portion was found to be 94.44 per cent., and the non-magnetic 5.56 per cent. Analyses of these gave the following results: Magnetic Portion. Non-magnetic Portion. The iron formation of the Gogebic Range in northeastern Wisconsin and the northwestern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, resembles that of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota very closely in lithologic character and the subdivisions and horizons that can be recognized. It contains numerous interbedded slaty layers and considerable intraformational conglomerate in certain horizons. In contrast to the flat dip of the Mesabi formation, the Gogebic dips steeply to the northwest at an average angle of about 70". It has a quartzite and siliceous slate foot wall and a hanging wall of conglomerate, graywacke and slate. The black and gray Tyler slate has been designated the hanging wall of the Gogebic iron formation in U. S. Geologicial Survey monographs, but between the true Tyler slate and the commercially important Gogebic iron formation, and apparently unconformably upon the latter, is a series 600 ft. or more thick of conglomerate, slate, graywacke, and cherty iron formation, the latter being of no commercial importance on the Gogebic Range as far as now known. This series is probably that described as the "Capps" on the eastern Gogebic by the Michigan Geological Survey. The Gogebic iron formation proper can be subdivided into three main horizons, a lower cherty and an upper cherty with a banded or slaty horizon between them, corresponding to the three lower horizons of the Mesabi. Several minor subdivisions can be made of these major ones. Orebodies occur in all three horizons of the Gogebic series and in some places ore is developed across practically the entire series. Dikes and Sills The Gogebic iron formation has been intruded most intricately by basic dikes and sills, most of the former pitching east but some pitching west. One very extensive sill is intruded near the base of the lower slaty or banded horizon, in the formation known locally as the Yale slates. One extensive bedding or strike fault is associated with this sill and a great many transverse faults occur at different places along the Range. The combination, or association, of steep dip, faults, dikes and sills has produced conditions very favorable for the development of orebodies through the leaching, oxidation, and consequent concentration effected

The Buick mill is located at the site of the old Buick general store, approximately 4 miles south of Bixby, Missouri on route KK. It is a part of the operations in the area now called the "New Lead Belt". The ore body lies at an elevation of 270 feet above sea level, and is fairly flat lying, becoming slightly deeper toward the south. The mineralization is due to the secondary deposition of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, calcite, dolomite and some localized drusy quartz in a country rock of dolomitic limestone. The galena is fairly coarse grained with some large crystaline structure, and some oxidized surfaces. The sphalerite is fine grained- small crystals containing Cd (about 0.7%) and Ag (about 10 oz per ton) in solid solution. The chalcopyrite is fine grained, fine crystals that are sometimes massive in nature. The mine plan is a modified room and pillar system. Broken ore at the mine face will be transported to several different ore passes by rubber tired load-haul-dump units. Ore passes will drop the ore to a rail haulage level some 90 feet below the mining level where bottom dump cars will deliver it to a 42 in. Nordberg gyratory crusher. Two 12 ton capacity skips in balance carry the ore some 1,200 feet to the surface. The hoist is equipped with automatic controls for loading, hoisting and unloading.
