G. H. CLEVENGER, Colorado Springs, Colo.-Mr. Crowe's paper will be of great interest to cyanide operators, as it is a distinct new development in cyanidation. After reading the paper it occurred to me that some of us had done practically the same thing some time ago, but without design and unconsciously. I refer particularly to the operation of some of the earlier types of vacuum filter, used in connection with a dry vacuum pump and a receiver, which is somewhat similar equipment to that employed by Mr. Crowe. However, we did not appreciate the good effects we were getting from such of this solution as was precipitated, and it has remained for Mr. Crowe to bring distinctly to our attention the advantages of removing air from cyanide solutions before precipitation. Full credit is therefore due him for this very clever improvement in the cyanide process.

.ABOut 1.5 varieties, or tnodifications, of the best rnagnesiurn available were prepared and subjected to etching tests, then examined for micro-structure. Of the 30-udd etching reagents that were tried, nearly half, mostly ammonium salts, etched the metal satisfactorily. The surfacing and etching of magnesium is shown to be a very simple and quick operation. The density and hardness of magnesium were determined. The most interesting new observations relate to the finding of the hexagonal etch figures, the crystal laminations, and the fact that the metal is plastic, cold, when restrained or quickly deformed. Under slowly applied pressule cold metal deforms slightly, then shears to fracture without plastic flow. The chief structural features of magnesium arc presented in two reduced photographs and 30 photomicrographs. Materials Tested There are only two sources in the United States from which new metal can be procured: the American Magnesium Corpn. and the Dow Chemical Co. No pronounced structural or property differences in the metals from these two companies were disclosed by the work of this investigation. The following materials were obtained from the manufacturers: 1. Massive crystals of distilled metal (American Magnesium Corpn.). 2. Rods of hot-extruded metal, ½-in. squares and 5/8-in. rounds (American Magnesium Corpn.). 3. Sheet magnesium, 0.005-in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). 4. Cast stick metal, 13/8-in. dia. (Dow Chemical Co.). 5. Magnesium-aluminum alloy, hot-rolled plate, ½-in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). From these materials, were prepared: 6. Sections from a furnace-cooled ingot made from clistilled crystal. 7. Cold-strained pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 8. Pieces cold-squeezed to fracture from (6), (4) and (2). 9. Hammer-struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 10. Steam-hammer struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 11. Sections from furnace-cooled ingot of the magnesium-aluminum alloy.

A large proportion of the work performed in wet-crushing silver mills is devoted to the handling and re-handling of pulp between the battery and the pans. There seems to be no generally applicable substitute for the settling-tanks, and in the present system of constructing mills the tanks involve an amount of labor which may be regarded as disproportionate and unnecessary, in view of the automatic improvements which have been introduced in other directions. This diffculty has been met, however, by Boss's continuous process, in which the pulp flows directly from the mortars to the first of a series of constantly working overflow-pans. This method has been adopted at the Noonday mill, Bodie, California; the Harshaw, Arizona; the Sierra Grande, New Mexico ; and the Prietas, Sonora. The continuous process, while giving excellent results with special ores, and under peculiar local conditions (such as a deficiency in water supply), is not, I believe, claimed to be available for all raw-amalgamating mills, notwithstanding its well-merited popularity for certain work. Some trouble has been experienced from the tendency to concentration in the pans, though this can be avoided by skilful manipulation. It has also the disadvantage inherent in combinations of distinct operations ; it requires a very nice adjustment of the water supply to obtain full battery efficiency without running the pans too thin, though the latter defect is partially compensated for by the gradual thickening of the pulp as it proceeds through the series of pans. The objection is similar to that which holds in a parallel duplex process, that of combining roasting and smelting in a single furnace, where each operation is injuriously affected by the necessity of fitting it in with another and entirely different one.

THE important developments within the past few years in electrochemistry, in particular in the electric furnace art, in electrometallurgy and in the methods of combatting corrosion are to be the subjects of my discussion. Fig.1 shows the rise of the electric steel furnace industry in this country and Canada. Many prophesied that the electric furnace was largely a war baby and that the sudden rise in the industry, due to the outbreak of the great war, would be fol-lowed by an equally sudden drop after the armistice. However, the curve shows that this, prophecy was not correct; the number of furnaces in operation in this country and Canada has continued to increase steadily, so that at the end of 1925 there were over 525 electric steel furnaces in successful operation. What does this mean? It has a big significance, namely that the en-tire steel industry has been revolutionized, to a certain extent, that we have been able to introduce certain alloys and steel products that we were unable to pro-duce before. On the table is. a sample of metallic chro-mium, analyzing more than 98 per cent chromium, made in the electric furnace. Before the war, the only commercial method of producing chromium was that by the Goldschmidt process. If chromium oxide is mixed with granulated aluminum, a violent reaction occurs, resulting in the production of metallic chro-mium. However, the price of chromium so made will always be above that of the raw material, which at the present time is about 27 cents a pound.. Furthermore, the chromium metal could only be turned out in small quantities, whereas in the electric furnace, large quan-tities, ton masses, can be produced today. The advent of chromium produced in the electric furnace has brought about an entire new phase in the alloy indus-try. The fuel-fired furnaces can turn out a low-carbon chromium steel that runs about 3 per cent chromium, whereas in the electric furnace, 60 per cent ferro-chromium is daily produced in large masses with almost entire elimination of carbon. It is difficult indeed to turn out ferrochrome very low in carbon. New steels are being produced today, for example the steel with which everyone has become familiar within the 'last few years, "stainless steel,". and which would have been impossible without the low-carbon ferrochrome. The elimination of most of the carbon made it possible to roll the chromium steels into thin sheets and manu-facture them into knife blades.

For elevated temperature-constant load creep tests of a solid solution alloys, the creep strain is a function of a temperature-compensated time parameter 0 = je H/RT dt. The activation energy H is equal to o constant of about 36,000 cal per mol. The substructures resulting from a given creep stress condition are functions of the creep strain independent of temperature. Each new creep stress gives a new unique set of grain substructures; this is one of the factors responsible for the failure of the mechanical equation of state for creep. IN this report an attempt is made to correlate the creep properties of dilute a: solid solutions in aluminum with the subgrain structures that are developed during creep. The possibilities of such correlations have already been suggested by Wood et al. and others1-" who demonstrated that the subgrain structures are functions of the creep stress, creep strain, rate of creep, and temperature. Investigations by Sherby and Dorn' have shown that the creep strain, E, at constant load for dilute a solid solutions of aluminum is given by the functional relationship: e = f(8,u,) [1] where: 0 equals te-AH/RT = temperature-compensated time; t, time; AH, activation energy, - 35,800 cal per mol; R, gas constant; T, absolute temperature, above 400°K; and u,, initial creep stress. Consequently, it was anticipated that the subgrain structure that develops during a constant load creep test should also correlate with any two of the three significant variables C, 8, and Another possible correlation between the subgrain structure and the creep variables is obtained by differentiating Eq. 1 with respect to time, whence the creep rate, 2, becomes: = (2L) (2) =f (, u,) e-AHRT [2] or: e = F (c e H/RT, 0) [3] For the minimum creep rate, ;,, 8 is solely a function of U, as revealed by Eq. 1. Consequently, at the minimum creep rate Eq. 3 reduces to: = F (eAH/RT) [41 Correlations between U, and i, eAH/RT were found valid for solid solution alloys of aluminum where AH was a constant of about 35,800 cal per mol. The parameter ;, eH/RT is identical to the Zener-Hollo-mon parameter8," used by them in evaluating the tensile properties of copper and other metals. Eq. 4 suggests that the subgrain structure developed during secondary creep might be correlatable with either of the two variables 2, e H/RT or u,. Some of the solid solution aluminum alloys which were discussed in an earlier report' were also used in the present investigation. Sheets of these alloys were homogenized, cold rolled from 0.100 to 0.070 in. in thickness and then recrystallized to about the same grain size. Their chemical composition and grain size are recorded in Table I. Creep specimens were selected with their tensile axes in the rolling direction. The details for creep testing have been described10 and will not be repeated here. All creep tests were performed under constant load conditions. Experimental Results and Discussion Metallographic Structure of Creep Specimens: In order to obtain a preliminary concept of creep on the metallographic structure of high purity aluminum, the various ruptured specimens previously used to obtain the creep data for pure aluminum were polished and etched electrolytically in a dilute solution of fluoroboric acid. Oblique illumination was used to reveal the substructures which, for convenience, are shown in correlation with the vs. ;, eH/RT curve in Fig. 1. It is necessary to emphasize that the data for the curve refer to the various secondary stages of creep whereas the micrographs refer to the fractured creep specimens. Nevertheless a regular and systematic correlation is observed between E, eAH/RT (or the creep stress) and the micro-structure at fracture. For In (e, eAH/RT) = 42.3, which refers to creep at a high creep rate and a low creep temperature, the fractured aluminum specimen, as shown by the micrograph in the upper right-hand corner of Fig. 1, exhibited extensive deforma-

IN the course of an investigation directed toward expanding ground-water facilities in Essex and Morris counties, New Jersey, the Board of Water Commissioners of the city of East Orange authorized a seismic-refraction survey' for the purpose of de-lineating bedrock topography below unconsolidated overburden. Results of the survey were highly satisfactory and led to the preparation of a comparatively detailed bedrock contour map. Knowledge of the bedrock depth and configuration was an important aid in selection of sites for test drilling. The portion of the East Orange Water Reserve under consideration is in the flood plain of the Pas-saic River about 10 miles west of Newark, N. J. The flood plain is about 175 ft above mean sea level and is bordered by low hills rising to elevations of approximately 250 ft. The bedrock underlying the Water Reserve consists of sandstone and shale of the Triassic Brunswick formation and is covered everywhere by deposits of unconsolidated glacial outwash sand and gravel, lacustrine clay, and recent river silt as much as 150 ft thick. Yield of wells in the sandstone and shale averages 100 to 200 gpm. Since production wells constructed in the sand and gravel aquifer in the buried river valley shown on the contour map (Fig. 1) yield 300 to 1400 gpm, it was proposed to locate additional production wells in this buried valley, where the yields per well would be maximum. In 1939 and 1946 the East Orange Water Dept. had electrical-resistivity surveys made to determine depths to bedrock. From the resistivity data the exploration company prepared a bedrock contour map. A well field expansion program begun in 1955 utilized this information to locate sites for test wells along a predicted northward extension of the buried valley in which existing production wells are located. After several test wells (wells 201-205) had been drilled, it became apparent that the resistivity information was unreliable." For example, test well 201 recorded bedrock at a depth of 72 ft, whereas the resistivity depth determination was 130 ft. As a consequence, the test drilling program was temporarily suspended and a seismic survey was under- taken to determine the topography and extent of the buried valley known from well records to underlie the existing well field. In the first phase of this study, several seismic shot point locations were placed at sites where well logs had been obtained previously. This procedure is necessary in a new area to determine whether the seismic method is applicable and what degree of accuracy is to be expected. At the East Orange Water Reserve, depths obtained from the shot points near test wells 202, 203, and 204 were within 8 to 11 pct of the depths logged (Table I). With this assurance that accurate results could be obtained, additional seismic spreads were located on the Water Reserve. Using a portable refraction seismograph, in the fall of 1955 a crew of four men shot a total of 29 reversed seismic spreads in a period equivalent to six field days. Charges as heavy as 3 1b of 40 pct dynamite were necessary at a few places to overcome ground vibrations caused by traffic on nearby highways. At most other sites, a 1-1b charge was sufficient. Travel-time plots were made for all spreads, and depths and true velocities were calculated according to formulas for multiple sloping layers by Ewing, Woollard, and Vine.' The plot of spread 7 (Fig. 2) is typical of the short spreads in which bedrock was shallow—about 50 ft in this case. Where there were not enough arrivals through the bedrock to define the high velocity bedrock line, the spreads were lengthened. This was done by placing shots on line several hundred feet away from each end of the line of geophones. It was then possible to construct complete reverse plots for both short and extended shot points (see spread 27, Fig. 3). Four individual depths were calculated from each extended spread. Three and in some cases four seismic layers were observed. The surficial layer had a velocity range of 900 to 1200 fps, the lowest velocity recorded. This seismic layer is above the water table and is interpreted as recent river silt. The bedrock had the highest velocities, which ranged from 10,600 to 16,400 fps. Monotonic tension and controlled cyclic-strain tests have been conducted on an annealed steel at various strain rates and temperatures in the weep range. Evidence of a strain-induced precipitate reaction abozle 500°C was determined from pronounced cyclic-hardening effects, increase inflow stress, inter granular fracture, drastic decrease in low-cycle fatigue resistance, and loss in tensile fracture ductility, as well as through electron-microscopy examination. It was found that strain rate as well as temperature had a pronounced effect on these observations. A parameter of the form P = T(7.95 - log ip) was determined, which was directly related to the ductility, defined either as the true strain at fracture in the case of simple tension, or as 2N 1/2 ? E p in the case of cyclic plastic strain. A highly satisfactory comparison of the cyclic life as measured and as computed from the ductility predicted by this parameter was obtained for a range of temperatures from 400° to 650°C and for crosshead speeds of 0.002 to 0.2 in. per min. MANY metals subjected to sustained loading at elevated temperatures derive resistance to creep from solid-state reactions of various alloying constituents. These reactions can be many and varied, and occur as a consequence of time and temperature according to reaction-rate principles. Strong evidence exists that many of these reactions are influenced by plastic strain, the argument being put forth that dislocations act as sites for nucleation and growth for the new phase.' Many examples can be cited where plastic strain during transformation influences the structure, and as a consequence affects the properties.2 The low-alloy steels serve as particularly good examples for investigating the effect which aging reactions have on resulting properties. Alloying elements such as carbon and nitrogen, and carbide formers such as manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and so forth, can, by the particular aging reaction which occurs, produce strengthening effects at various temperatures, and so endow strength to the alloy over a broad range of temperatures. These effects have been systematically studied by Glen both during creep3 and for constant strain-rate tension testing.4,5 The work of Glen is of considerable interest in connection with the present study, particularly in regard to the effect of various alloying additions on the true stress-strain curve and on fracture ductility at various elevated temperatures. He has shown that strain-age hardening occurred during plastic straining, which was quite specific both to the temperature of the test and to the alloying element involved. When strain-age hardening was noted at a particular temperature, a .minimum in reduction of area was also obtained. Provided the temperature for the minimum reduction of area exceeded 300°C, all minimum ductility fractures were found to be inter-crystalline in nature. For carbon steels containing molybdenum, two minima in reduction of area were noted, one occurring at 200° to 250°C, the precise temperature depending on the percentage of molyb-

In many fields edge water is one of the most important factors governing the production of oil. Possibly this fact is not appreciated by many producers except in so far as it may bring about a loss in production from wells drilled on the flanks of structures. In the light of artificial flooding as practiced in New York and Pennsylvania, and of the beneficial effect of natural water-flooding on many wells and leases in the Mid-Continent and elsewhere, it seems reasonable to suppose that very few phases of the petroleum industry hold greater promise for future benefit than the study and control of the natural water drive. Rate of Water Encroachment The rate of movement of water in artificially flooded areas has been referred to as so many feet per unit of time, usually from an injection well toward surrounding producing wells. This definition is vague when used in reference to the movement of natural edge water, inasmuch as such factors as sand thickness, steepness of dip and horizontal extent arc not considered. In the ultimate analysis, only the vertical component of movement affects the production of oil in the natural drive, and in order to define the rate of water encroachment more exactly, such a term as acre-fect per unit time might be used. Thus, where one well is located to each 10 acres a vertical movement of 5 ft. in the water level in a year would be defined as an encroachment of 50 acre-feet per year, and where one well is located to each 20 acres, as 100 acre-feet per year. Such a definition as this is entirely arbitrary, but it takes into consideration to a certain extent the influence of well spacing, and consequent sand drainage, on the rate of water movement. The rate of movement is considered to be an important function of water encroachment, for it is believed that the efficiency of recovery by natural water flood depends a good deal upon the rate of movement. In general, rapid encroachment is thought to effect a poor recovery because of the differential in favor of the movement of water through a sand body and the consequent tendency to trap oil in the sand. The Peruvian production increased over 3 million barrels from 1933 to 1934—from approximately 13¼ million barrels to over 16¼ million barrels—bringing the cumulative production of the country up to 171 million barrels. Most of this production, as well as most of the increase in 1934, came from La Brea-Parinas Estate, the property of the International Petroleum Co., Limited. In 1932 Peru stood eleventh among the oil-producing countries of the world, but in 1933 her production exceeded that of Trinidad, Argentine and Colombia, which placed her in eighth position. In 1934 Peru's production was exceeded by that of Colombia by about one million barrels, and by that of the Argentine by about 1½ million barrels, thus placing her in tenth position. After several years of relative inactivity in drilling and exploration there was a noticeable increase during 1934 in both of these lines of activity. Oil Fields La Brea-Parinas Estate.—Production on the La Brea-Parinas Estate. reached a significant total of 85,080 bbl. as early as 1891. It increased to over one million barrels in 1912, and to over 10 million barrels in 1929, and in 1934 it reached an all-time high of over 14 million barrels. The total production from 1890 to 1934 was 133,784,609 barrels. Practically all the drilling on the property has been done with cable tools, but during 1934 three strings of rotary tools were introduced. One was a heavy outfit for drilling a deep test and the other two were lighter outfits for deepening wells in the newer section of the field, where the gas pressure was too high to permit safe drilling with standard tools. During 1934 a total of 28,127 ft. was drilled, 66 wells were deepened, and 6 new wells were completed. At the end of the year 2844 wells had been drilled on the Estate, of which 1814 were still productive. The remaining 1030 wells represent abandoned producers or dry holes. The total area that has been productive up to the present time is estimated at 13,369 acres. An interesting article on the various phases of operations of the International Petroleum Co. was written by Arthur Iddings and published in The Oil and Gas Journal (Dec. 27, 1934).

Experimental work on liquefaction of coal was taken up by the Bureau of Mines in 1936 when it became evident that a prudent policy from the national point of view should include preparation for the time when gradual exhaustion of petroleum resources would require supplementing the growing demand for motor fuel with gasoline and diesel oil from coal. At that time (1936) certain foreign nations that had no home sources of petroleum, especially Germany, England, and Japan, were conducting active research and at least two of them were producing liquid fuel from coal on a commercial scale. Germany was reported to have an annual producing capacity of 800,000 metric tons of gasoline per year, and England had just put into operation the Billingham plant of Imperial Chemical Industries for the hydrogehation of bituminous coal and tar by the Bergius-I.G. process. The annual capacity of this plant was about 150,000 long tons of gasoline per annum (3500 bbl. per day). With these developments taking place in foreign countries, it seemed important to undertake a long-range program of fundamental research in this country to establish a sound groundwork for the evaluation of foreign work on synthetic liquid fuels and at the same time to obtain data on the oil yields and operating difficulties using various kinds of American coals and lignite to the hydrogenation process. The results of such research would be useful in determining the yields and quality of liquid products obtainable from various coals so that American industry would be in position to select the most suitable coals and make rapid progress in establishing this new industry when the commercial need should arise. It was hoped, also, that progress in a better understanding of the chemistry of coal hydrogenation would reduce the cost of the process materially. To carry out this program, a small continuous unit capable of hydrogenating 100 Ib. of coal in 24 hr. was installed at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa. Small steel autoclaves or bombs of 0.3 gal. (1.2 liters) capacity also were used for batch-hydro-genation experiments in the study of the chemical fundamentals of the process. Much valuable assistance was obtained in planning the experimental program and designing the equipment from the Fuel Research Station of Great Britain and the Fuel Laboratories of the Mines Department of Canada, where such investigations had been in progress for several years. The earliest record of coal in Indiana is one of the earliest in the country. At the close of the French and Indian War, in 1763, the famous Indian trader, George Croghan, was sent from Pittsburgh on a mission to the western Indians. His party met that of a hostile chief on the lower Ohio and was captured, and were taken up the Wabash River; on June 22nd, he passed the mouth of the Vermilion River-probably the Big Vermilion-and on June 23rd, he made the following entry in his journal: "on the South Side of the Ouabache runs a high hank, in which are several very fine coal mines, and behind this bank, is a very large meadow, clear for several miles."' The mines, of course, were outcrops. A few days after this he met some Indian acquaintances who secured his freedom. This location was at Ouicatanon, 210 miles from "Port Vincent," which was destroyed a few years later, and in what is now Fountain County, probably near Coal Creek. Croghan was familiar with the coal already being worked at Pittsburgh. Surveyors who ran the township and section lines in the first ten years of the last century noted the presence of coal and marked its position on the maps in 1804.2 The next record is by Nicholas J. Roosevelt, who in 1809 examined the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers prior to starting building the first steamboat to navigate these rivers. "Not only did he do this, but finding coal on the banks of the Ohio, he purchased and opened mines of the mineral; and so confident was he of the success of the project on hand, that he caused supplies of the fuel to be heaped upon the shore, in anticipation of the wants of a steamboat whose keel had yet to be laid."3 It is probable that this account confused the date of seeing the coal with that of mining it, as an earlier account by another relative of Mrs. Roosevelt of the first trip of the steamboat New Orleans in 1811 is as follows:

ABOUT 15 varieties, or modifications, of the best magnesium available were prepared and subjected to etching tests, then examined for microstructure. Of the 30-odd etching reagents that were tried, nearly half, mostly ammonium salts, etched the metal satisfactorily. The surfacing and etching of magnesium is shown to be a very simple and quick operation. The density and hardness of magnesium were determined. The most interesting new observations relate to the finding of the hexagonal etch figures, the crystal laminations, and the fact that the metal is plastic, cold, when restrained or quickly deformed. Under slowly applied pressure cold metal deforms slightly, then shears to fracture without plastic flow. The chief structural features of magnesium are presented in two reduced photographs and 30 photomicrographs. MATERIALS TESTED There are only two sources in the United States from which new metal can be procured: the American Magnesium Corpn. and the Dow Chemical Co. No pronounced structural or property differences in the metals from these two companies were disclosed by the work of this investigation. The following materials were obtained from the manufacturers: 1. Massive crystals of distilled metal (American Magnesium Corpn.). 2. Rods of hot-extruded metal, ½ -in. squares and 5/8-in. rounds (American Magnesium Corpn.). 3. Sheet magnesium, 0.005-in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). 4. Cast stick metal, 1 3/8-in. dia. (Dow Chemical Co.). 5. Magnesium-aluminum alloy, hot-rolled plate, ½ in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). From these materials, were prepared: 6. Sections from a furnace-cooled ingot made from distilled crystal. 7. Cold-strained pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 8. Pieces cold-squeezed to fracture from (6), (4) and (2). 9. Hammer-struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 10. Steam-hammer struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 11. Sections from furnace-cooled ingot of the magnesium-aluminum alloy.

The outstanding features of 1926 in the petroleum industry included the following: 1. Stocks of all oils (crude and refined) were reduced, making the first annual decline since 1918. 2. Domestic crude oil production increased steadily during the last 11 months of the year, accelerating during the fourth quarter, and ending the year at the highest level ever attained. 3. Three new major oil fields were developed—Panhandle, Spindle-top and Seminole. 4. Important advances were registered in production technique, tending to retard the declines of old wells and to maintain the flush periods of new wells. 5. The problem of gaining greater economic control of production through unit operations and gas conservation received growing recognition by the industry and the Federal Oil Conservation Board. 6. The rate of drilling was sharply increased during the second quarter of the year and suffered only a very slight retardation during the closing months. 7. The runs of crude oil to stills were maintained above normal throughout the year and underwent acceleration during the fourth quarter. 8. The gasoline situation was marked by a continuous and substantial increase in the rate of production of cracked gasoline, and by an improvement in the statistical position of the commodity. 9. Prices of both crude petroleum and its principal derivatives were characterized by more profitable levels and greater stability than for a number of years past; and, while showing declines during the fourth quarter, prices did not recede sufficiently to slow down materially either drilling or refinery operations. As the title indicates, this paper treats of the degree of liberation of minerals after grinding. To obtain the supporting data a "tool" not commonly used by metallurgists has been employed. It is the "heavy solution." The advantages gained through its use are shown. Actual ores were employed in order to make the study concrete. The selection was somewhat incidental and happened to embrace the red iron ores of Alabama. So, any reader interested in these ores will find some of their properties described. The red ores constituted the material examined and a somewhat new adaptation of heavy solutions was the tool of examination. If either the ores or the tool interest the reader these notes may be of some value. The writer's chief interest was in the rate of liberation of locked grains. Ores are generally ground preparatory to concentration and as long as the concentrators make suitable products the effectiveness of the grinding is likely to be unquestioned. But when suitable products are difficult to make, an investigation becomes imperative. In such a case a dissection of the ore might be made to find the cause of the trouble. Such a condition of unsuitable products exists in the low-grade red iron ores of Alabama. They are difficult to concentrate. To be sure it might be said that the concentration of iron ores is a new thing and that the ore-dressing methods are undeveloped, but a glance at the industry reveals an abundance of methods and devices for almost all imaginable conditions. Concentrating machinery has not taken a part in this investigation; the use of it would have been only machinery testing, and should never precede the ore testing which consists of such methods as herein outlined. When the properties of the ores have been gleaned the machinery may be used more effectively.

The Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory at North Carolina State University is engaged mainly in applied nonmetallic mineral processing research to assist the North Carolina mining industry. The laboratory helped to bring the flotation process to North Carolina feldspar. spodumene, mica and phosphate producers and it maintains a versatile batch and pilot plant. The conservation of mineral resources through improved processing methods has been the object of most of the laboratory's projects. Current laboratory work is sponsored by three feldspar companies, the State of North Carolina, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This work is aimed at reducing the amounts of feldspar tailings in the Spruce Pine area. Mineral dressing techniques are applied to these tails to reclaim salable mineral products such as feldspar, mica, quartz, and to make a more uniform material for possible ceramic and other applications.

During the past few years a number of large and highly productive oil fields have been discovered in the United States. The immediate oversupply which has resulted, together with the circumstances under which the new fields have been operated, has created exaggerated impressions of the importance and magnitude of these fields. Statements as to the many years during which individual fields could supply the entire demand of certain areas, as to the overwhelming effect of these fields on the industry, and as to their greater size compared with any of the older fields have become so common as to attract little attention. For example, East Texas is commonly considered as the "greatest oil field" and a review of the development of the field for 1931 is so headed in one of the leading trade journals.' East Texas is unquestionably a very great oil field. However, some students of the field have estimated its ultimate recovery at about one billion barrels, and the Bradford field discovered in 1875 is also estimated, by competent engineers, to have about a billion barrels still recoverable by water drive, in addition to more than 300,000,-000 bbl. it has already produced. If East Texas should produce the two or three billion barrels assigned to it by more optimistic estimators, it will, though considerably greater than Bradford, still fall far short of it in importance to the industry. A reasonable doubt also exists as to whether East Texas will exceed the Midway-Sunset field which has produced about 720,000,000 bbl. and still has important reserves. Again, in importance to the industry, Midway-Sunset has been greater than East Texas can ever be. Relative Importance of Oil Fields The principal purpose of this study is to compare, on the basis of their importance to the industry, a considerable number of the major fields which have been developed in the United States. Some remarks are also made as to the estimates of reserves in certain fields now in course of development, since the writer believes that the conditions under which these fields are operated lead to estimates of recoverable reserves which

In an investigation of various equiatomic alloys of transition elements, Dwightl did not find evidence for the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn. More recently waterstrat2 has reported the occurrence of this structure in the alloy his sample had been homogenized at 1150°C and subsequently reannealed at 725°C after crushing to powder. The purpose of this note is to confirm the existence of the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn and to report a lattice parameter. An equiatomic alloy was prepared by arc-melting under an argon atmosphere vanadium and electrolytic manganese having a purity of at least 99.9 pet. The composition was obtained by charging an excess of manganese and monitoring the weight loss until the stoichiometric composition was achieved; the assumption that the loss during melting was due to the vaporization of manganese appears to be a valid one.' The calculated composition of the sample prepared was 49.85 at. pct V and 50.15 at. pct Mn. Specimens taken from the fractured as-cast buttons were wrapped in molybdenum foil and encapsulated in quartz capsules under vacuum; there was no evidence of a reaction between the alloy and foil. The X-ray patterns were obtained using filtered copper or chromium radiation with a Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera having a diameter of 114.6 mm. The CrKa radiation is best suited for detecting the superlattice lines since it overcomes the slight difference in scattering powers of the components by making use of the anomalies in atomic scattering factor which occur when the frequency of the radiation is close to the characteristic absorption frequency of one of the elements.394 A specimen in the as-cast condition, as well as one which had been annealed for 1 week at 900°C and water-quenched, gave a diffraction pattern for the disordered bcc solid solution. However, when samples were homogenized at 900°C for 3 weeks followed by a subsequent anneal at 700°C for 6 to 7 weeks and then water-quenched or furnace-cooled, the (loo), (1111, and (210) Ka superlattice lines were observed in films taken with chromium radiation. An ao = 2.904 * 0.001 was determined by a Nelson-Riley extrapolation from a film taken with CuKa radiation. The author wishes to thank Mr. J. W. Downey and Mr. L. J.
