C. H. MATHEWSON, New Haven, Conn. (written discussion *).-In a recent discussion of Dr. Jeffries' paper on tungsten,1 J. C. W. Humfrey,2 after taking exception to certain of the author's ideas relative to the cohesion of A and C metal, expresses the opinion that future research is likely to develop a method of preparing tungsten possessing "mechanical properties in line with those of other metals." The present paper by Dr. Jeffries begins with a determination of comparative properties of tungsten, copper, and iron, in which much dissimilarity is apparent, and ends with a coherent explanation as to why much of this dissimilarity is natural and inevitable, thereby supplying theoretical means for visualizing the changing properties of metals in general, once certain fundamental facts are known. The author's reasoning is primarily from the standpoint of the amorphous theory and his principal achievement is the development of an idea f differential cohesion according to conditions of temperature, etc., between A and C metal (which was first plainly suggested by Rosehain and Ewen, in their papers on Intercrystalline Cohesion of Metals) along with associated ideas, so as to give us a really useful working theory. I have come rather reluctantly to believe in the amorphous theory, or some theory admitting a modification of the ordinary crystalline phase so as to permit differential properties within the conglomerate, mainly because in no other way does it seem possible to account for observed changes of properties with temperature, etc. The very best illustration f the competency f the amorphous theory in this respect is seen in this and other recent papers by the author. All fractures through normal or healthy metal that have been preceded by deformation are supposed, by Dr. Jeffries, to take place either through the amorphous phase or at certain boundaries between amorphous and crystalline material; his reference to fractures, both members of which are similar in appearance and do not reveal a preexisting coarse-grained structure because of a coating of amorphous metal, indicates his preference for the former interpretation.

The North Texas district, as' herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wilbarger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, usually are modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting those in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsyl-vanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. Developments during 1942 Approximately 500 wells were drilled in the district during 1942, in contrast with some 1600 wells drilled during 1941, and only some goo oil wells were completed, a decrease from 1941 of more than 10 per cent in the number of successful drilling operations of the total wells drilled. Production increased slightly over the previous year in spite of a decrease in the number of producing wells. The average depth of discovery wells was some 600 ft. deeper than in 1941. Although more discoveries produced from horizons above the base of the Strawn series than those below the Strawn, the deeper horizons, including the Bend series of the Pennsylvanian, the Mississippian limestone, and the Simpson and Ellenburger of the Ordovician, furnished most of the addition to oil reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was again in the Ellenburger formation in the K. M. A. field. During the year 47 wells were completed, bringing the total developed acreage in this horizon to some 5450 acres. The most active area was Montague County, in which eight fields, or potential fields, were discovered although only 39 oil wells were completed. K. M. A: Pressure Maintenance Satisfactory progress was made by the K. M. A. Pressure Maintenance Association in 1942, At the end of the year, 100 wells were being used for input and total monthly volume of gas returned to the reservoir reached a high of 430,971 M cu. ft. in December, with an input ratio of 587 cu. ft. of gas returned for each barrel of oil produced during the month. The laws of Kick and Rittinger are explained as functions of particle size with metal cutting theory. Comminution is shown to be basically the same process as metal grinding. The machine shop type of grinding operation is used to study mineral crushing. Evidence indicates that plastic flow occurs in comminution. THE laws of comminution of Kick and Rittinger have been debated for many years. Certain data obtained from ball mill and drop tests are found to be in approximate agreement with Rittinger's law while other data would seem to support Kick's law. In all these tests the energy required to produce a wide variety of particle sizes has been studied. Surface area has also been measured with considerable difficulty, at first because it was thought that the energy associated with crushing was that required to create new surface, later because of precedent and because a more fundamental variable was unknown. Tests made with the machine shop type of grinding process show that normally brittle materials that are usually crushed can behave like the more ductile metals. Brittleness is then a relative prop- erty largely dependent on specimen size and stress state. The machine grinding operation offers a convenient means for studying the comminution of materials in which the important size variable retains its identity. The energy required to grind a certain volume of material is shown to be strongly dependent on size. Kick's law is found to hold very well for particles below 1 micron in size, while Rittinger's law holds approximately in the comminution of larger particles. While a physical origin of Kick's law is established in terms of the theoretical strength of materials having a perfect lattice structure, there is found to be no physical basis for Rittinger's law. Because of its industrial importance, comminution has commanded considerable technical attention and has been the subject of continuous study for nearly a century. A number of empirical rules have been proposed to make it possible for grinding energies to be predicted. Of these so-called laws of comminution those bearing the names of Kick and Rittinger have been most widely applied and debated.

THE subject of transverse fissures in steel rails has been discussed very thoroughly in recent years from various points of view and the final opinions expressed may be roughly classified into two groups: (1) That these fissures are the result merely of fatigue of the steel and are independent of the quality of the metal. (2) That the quality of the metal and the mill practice must have something to do with them. The first point of view was most-ably and logically presented by J. E. Howard,1 and in the discussion of this paper, as well as in several other preceding publications, Dr. P. H. Dudley, Consulting Engineer of the New York Central Lines, has strongly defended the other opinion.2 The steel makers of the country have naturally rallied under Mr. Howard's banner, hoping to place the entire blame for these. failures upon the railroads with their high wheel-loads, hard steel, heavy traffic, and sometimes inferior roach-bed; while the railroad men,, on the other hand, have been busy accumulating statistics and records in the effort to find an actual reason in the rails themselves that would account for the seemingly haphazard occurrence of transverse fissures under varying conditions and at widely separated points. The view that these fissures were due merely to normal fatigue under alternating stresses seemed most reasonable to the writer until quite recently, because from work clone in this laboratory, as well as the work of other investigators of the problem, no structural differences, in the vast majority of cases, were found between metal at the nuclei of transverse fissures and metal at similar positions in the same rails or in other rails that had not developed fissures. . SLATE (Thonschiefer, German; ardoise, French) is a rock, an aggregation of mineral grains, occurring in nature, which is used for roofing and other special purposes. It is finely granular and crystalline and generally derived from an originally clayey bed or series of beds. As a result of its having been put under essentially horizontal compression by geologic forces, this material now has its particles elongated and flattened so as to yield a very good rock cleavage along the flat surfaces of the minerals, a feature entirely independent of the original bedding in the rock. This is the gist of the definition adopted by the Committee on Slate of the American Society for Testing Materials. Slate differs in varying degrees from most other common rocks (such as limestone, sandstone, granite, and "trap") in chemical and mineral composition. Its most characteristic feature, however, is its tendency to fracture along a series of very nearly parallel and very closely spaced smooth planes, called cleavage planes. This property of cleaving, above all else, gives slate its industrial value. ORIGIN AND MODE OF OCCURRENCE Most of the features of slate might be anticipated from its origin. Being a rock rather than a mineral, its composition may vary consider- ably without impairment of value. In most slates, the material of which the rock is now composed was once deposited as clay on the bottom of a lake or sea. Subsequently these clayey strata were compressed by the kind of lateral pressure that folds rock strata, the minerals of the clay being changed or metamorphosed. In the chemical reaction involved, new and essentially plane-shaped minerals belonging to the mica groups were developed. Other minerals were formed but micas generally pre- dominated. These were oriented so that their two longer dimensions are approximately at right angles to the last effective direction of pressure. Since the crystals are thus subparallel, fractures can be developed easily along their surfaces, much as cards can be separated by inserting a knife blade between them. The practical use to which topographical models or relief-maps have been put, has within the last few years taken a wider range. They are rapidly coming into favor for other than purely scientific purposes, and their value for illustration and instruction is being more fully appreciated. Topographical maps; representing by contour-curve lines the elevations and depressions of the earth's surface, are now demanded in engineering work of nearly every description, and afford a ready means of bringing out the configuration of the country in a simple manner. A beautiful example of recent topographical mapping is seen in the seventeen sheets just issued by the Geological Survey of New Jersey. By reason of the inability of unskilled persons to understand the nature of a topographical map, it is sometimes necessary to con struct the same in relief, with the rivers, canals, railroads, etc., delin eated upon it. With the aid of such a map, problems in engineer ing science which would otherwise require expert assistance to explain them, are reduced to a simple and understandable form. Relief-maps are also of value to the geologist in working out the geological structure. To the instructor they present the most ready and efficient means of imparting clear and accurate knowledge of topography and kindred subjects. To the lawyer they are invalua ble in enabling him to bring into the court-room a representation of a part of the country with all its features accurately shown, to ex plain to the court and jury the special points about which litigation is pending and which would otherwise require long and laborious description. The application of the topographical map to business purposes is shown in a relief constructed by the writers for the Cumberland Valley Railroad Company and used by that company in the various ways of calling attention to the desirability of its route. The writer's first experience with flotation was during World War I, in the bene-ficiation of Alabama graphite schist ores. One plant used a cone with a peripheral overflow; dried ore was distributed by a rotating disk onto the surface of the water. No reagents were added' The flake-graphite film floated along with some fine silica. Dewatering screens separated the flake. Naturally unit capacities were low but results were satisfactory. Minerals separation mechanical flotation machines were used in another graphite mill. pine oil was added directly to the head cells, with very good results. All the graphite concentrates from both types of flotation were carefully refined after drying by passing through burr mills, followed by very close sizing on sifters. In March 1927, the writer ran a very successful flotation test on minus 28-mesh, deslimed, Tennessee brown phosphate "sand,"† using a mechanical laboratory machine built in the shops of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., through the courtesy of Ernest Klepetko. The machine was soon converted to a subaeration type, with improved results. This phosphate research program was greatly enlarged and led to the formation of the phosphate Recovery corporation. The development of nonmetallic flotation followed rapidly. The first flotation machine for bene- ficiation of phosphate was installed in January 1928, in a pilot mill, by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, at Mulberry, Florida. These machines were Minerals Separation, 24-in., sub-,,,tion types, with weir control of pulp between cells. The sand bleeders were very small—about 1¼-in. diameter. As the feed flake. Is to 25 per cent plus 28-mesh material, the cells choked up frequently. This was corrected by cutting a 2 by 6-in. bleeder opening above the impellers, at grid level, which short-circuited the coarse fractions directly into the feed of the next cell. The matter of size classification and grinding was a considerable problem, which does not come within the scope of this article. Because of the troubles noted above, cascade-type roughers were installed in the second flotation plant, built about 1930. Experimental cells had been tried in 1928. General plant layout is shown in Fig. 1 and details of the cascade construction in Fig. 2. The cascade installation in plant NO. 2 gave good results and eliminated troubles due to choke-ups and coarse feed. The capacities and metallurgical results equaled those of the modified 24-in. Minerals Separation flotation machines in plant No. I The objections to the cascade installation are the floor space and mill height required. INTRODUCTION Slurry systems and mechanical conveying, represent the main methods of transporting solids from one area of a mineral processing plant to another. A well-designed slurry handling system can assist in lowering plant capital costs by reducing building size, simplifying plant layout and reducing operating costs by lowering maintenance and labour costs. This Paper has been prepared with the object of providing a practical approach to designing slurry systems. SLURRY CHARACTERISTICS Slurry is a mixture of crushed or ground rock mixed with water or a chemical solution, and can flow under several different conditions: (a) As a homogeneous suspension; (b) As a heterogeneous suspension; (c) With a moving bed (saltation); (d) With a stationary bed. Homogeneous flow takes place when the solids are uniformly distributed throughout a pipe and when particle sizes are smaller than 325 mesh. Heterogeneous is the most common slurry suspension. In this system, there is a gradual increase in concentration of solid particles towards the bottom of a pipe. There is a fairly wide range of velocities that fall within this system. In moving bed systems, the coarse particles settle out and bounce along the bottom of a pipe. Operating under these conditions tends to minimize wear and power requirements, but because this system operates within narrow velocity limits, pipelines frequently plug. Stationary bed conditions exist when coarse material has settled in the bottom of the pipe restricting the available area. These conditions should be avoided. DESIGNING A SLURRY SYSTEM Slurry can be transported either by pumping through a pipeline or by developing a gravity head and flowing through a pipe or along a launder. When considering any slurry system, whether for the design of a new plant or to make modifications to an existing operating plant, design criteria are required. The design criteria provide the information for calculating the material balance and sizing the equipment. The quantities on the material balance can then be assigned to the flowsheet for reference. The Cascade Range of Washington can be considered metallogenetically to be primarily a copper province. Structural and chemical data compiled from examination of numerous copper occurrences in the Cascades indicate a marked parallel of physical conditions for sulfide deposition. In probable order of significance, the environmental criteria are as follows: 1) adjacent or subjacent, postregional metamorphism high-level intrusive activity, most commonly in the time range from 15 million years to 30 million years; 2) transverse northeast trending structural belts which obliquely cut the northwest regional trend of the range; 3) potassium-silica wall rock alteration; most important of the alteration suite of silicates are orthoclase secondary biotite and quartz; 4) the intersection of northwest trending and northeast trending structures. The varying geologic environments in the Washington Cascades present a complex setting for the sulfide deposits. The North Cascades are comprised of predominantly pre-Tertiary metamorphic rocks invaded by Tertiary calcalkaline intrustive rocks. The Central Cascades, lying south of the North Cascades, exhibit a younger, higher level geologic environment comprised of predominantly early to middle Tertiary volcanic rocks and subordinate sedimentary rocks which are intruded by Tertiary calc-alkaline igneous rocks. Although the Tertiary Cascade intrusions are dominantly quartz dioritic, copper mineralization is commonly found in rocks of quartz monzonite to granite composition. These acid rocks appear to be the product of late stage magmatic K alteration of the original quartz diorites. Sulfide concentrations are considered to be in part dependent on the degree of K-silicate activity and the intensity of transverse structural deformation.

At the Mining Experiment Station of the U. S. Geological Survey, in Pittsburg, an investigation of the process of combustion is being carried on in a specially-designed furnace having an unusually long combustion-chamber. This work is conducted by a con~mittee consisti~lg of 11. Kreisinger, mechanical engineer; Dr. J. C. W. Frazer, chemist; and Dr..J. K. Clement, physicist. The problem, essentially one of physical chemistry, is estremely interesting to all who are concerned in the burning of coal or the construction of furnaces. The main object of these experiments is to ascertain the relation between the amount of' the volatile combustible driven from the coal and the combustion-spaces necessary to burn it completely. Our best steam-coals vary from 15 to 45 per cent. in volatile matter and from 40 to 75 per cent. of fixed combtistible. The greater part of the latter is burned on the grate: but the volatile combustible leaves the freshly-charsed coal and must be burned in the combustion-space. If this space is not large enough, the volatile combustible mill leave the furnace only partly burnecl, and the result will be a considerable heat-loss and a smoky stack. Strictly speaking, the factor which determines the completeness of combustion of the volatile matter, after it has been mixed with a certain amount of air, is the length of time the mixture is allowed to remain in the combustion-space; but this length of time depends on the extent of the space itself. Let us suppose, for instance, that, when a given coal is burned at a certain standard rate, the volume of the volatile combustible driven oft' per second is 10 cu. ft. Adding, say, 10 cu. ft. of air, the volume of the resulting burning mixture is increased to 20 cu. ft. If the combustion-space is 30 cu. ft., the burning mixture will stay in it,

ANYONE who wishes to make the patterns for statues in order to cast them later in bronze, even though he himself is the artificer who made them, must take many things into consideration: first, whether they are large or small, and whether they are wholly round or only in part; then of what material they are made, for the way that can be followed if they are of wax cannot be used if they are of clay, wood, marble, or even of plaster; likewise he must consider whether or not it has irons inside to support it. There is also a great difference in facility if the support is placed more in. one way than in another. Great consideration should be given to whether it is to be made hollow or solid. If you have not been the workman yourself, you must at least have been an active helper in this and in every other part in order to be able to observe everything without a fault. For if they are large it is necessary to make their moulds in pieces, with marks and measurements so that you can replace them-at will exactly in the same order and in the same places after they have been taken out. But if you are the artificer [as well as sculptor] the process is made easier. Taking the ordinary way and, over an iron, make out of well beaten moulding clay, compounded with cloth clippings a core exactly as the statue is to be or however large you wish the hollow to be. Dry and bake it. On top of this work the wax, thickening it all over as much as you wish the bronze to be and finish it completely, remembering to arrange that the base may come out solid with bronze so as to support the whole work. Laboratory and plant data covering 12 different operations show that lower than "standard" ball mill speeds increase grinding efficiency. In the case of high pulp-level mills, the gain is so great that the increase in capital cost of the larger lower speed mill will pay for itself in less than a year's time. THE object of this paper is to show the economic advantage of operating ball mills at relatively slow speeds. Although many operators know that grinding costs are reduced by operating mills at low speeds, they seldom do so for a variety of reasons. When capital is limited, first cost is of primary importance, and installation of the less costly, highspeed mill is favored. When materials are in short supply, as during a war period, capacity rather than economy is the primary consideration. Existing mills are then speeded up to provide the desired increase in capacity, and new mills are purchased without consideration of maximum grinding efficiency. When the mill speed is increased to secure more production, the increase in grinding costs is often obscured by the total benefit derived from the additional output. This increase in grinding cost is seldom recognized as being sufficient to be worth correcting. For these reasons one may be lead to the erroneous conclusion that slow-speed operation is only occasionally applicable. The effect of mill speed on grinding efficiency has been studied in laboratory tests."! The results of some of these tests are given in tables I and I1 and fig. 1. In these tabulations, batch tests using ore charges of 125 to 200 lb were considered comparable to high pulp-level operation and charges of 50 to 100 lb comparable to low pulp-level operation. For the high pulp-level operation, these tests indicate the existence of a maximum in efficiency for operation at a speed of 50 pct of critical, both for the soft (dolomite) and hard (chert) ore. In low pulp-level operation, a decrease in speed increases the efficiency of grinding dolomite; no maximum of efficiency appears in the range of speeds tested.
