So far as the quality of the product is concerned, the history of the production of pig iron for foundry purposes is one of constant retrogression. The steps in this deterioration began with cold-blast charcoal pig iron, then anthracite iron, coke iron; then gradually warm to hot-blast coke iron, with the charcoal furnaces also heating their blast to get greater tonnages, and finally the present-day hot-blast coke irons with scrap additions to the ordinary burden that, according to one European report, have gone as high as 65 per cent. Parallel with this quality retrogression is the enormous increase in furnace tonnages from about 15 to over 1000 tons per day in excep tional instances of modern practice. The key to this situation is economic pressure. The effect is a growing differentiation between furnace production for gray iron and malleable foundries and for the production of commercial steel. As the foundry is often compelled to draw upon the pig irons made for steel purposes, for economic reasons, whereas the steel industry does not draw upon foundry pig irons proper, the situation is resolving itself into one of grave consequence for the life of the gray-iron castings industry, and hence the intensive present-day feeling in foundry circles for rigid specifications to govern the quality of pig irons sold for foundry use. In the discussion of a paper on the use of scrap in the blast furnace held recently in the Institute, a very pertinent remark was made by one of the participating furnacemen, who confessed that "the things found wrong by the foundryman with his iron were beyond his depth." It may be added that those things are also beyond the depth of most foundrymen who, however, know from their results that they are getting poorer castings today with many pig irons than they did with those same brands in former years. The self-potential or spontaneous polarization method is one of the oldest in the field of electrical exploration. When applied in prospecting for ore bodies, it is one of the most rapid and inexpensive means of locating indications of ore bodies at shallow depth. Usually, the procedure is to survey the equipotential lines of the electrical field that is generated by the electrochemical activity of the ore near the ground-water level, and to localize the so-called negative centers or points of greatest negative anomaly. Another field procedure involves the measurement of potential differences along potential profiles, generally laid out at right angles to the assumed strike. Again, in such survey, the basis for establishing the presence of ore is the location of negative potential anomalies. The earlier writers on the subject, notably Schlumbergerl and R. C. Wells,2 did much to clarify the fundamental electrochemical phenomena involved. Interpretation of the field data, however, remained largely qualitative. In 1925, A. Petrovsky3 analyzed the relation between the shape of the potential anomaly curve and size and depth of an Ore body by assuming the subsurface body to be a polarized sphere.' Along similar lines of approach, Edge and Laby5 considered the ore body a dipping sheet with limited extent in the direction of strike, while Poldini6 based the theory on the assumption of a dipping bar. The following study endeavors to enlarge upon these earlier investigations and attempts, on the basis of the potential distribution of a polarized bar, to indicate certain characteristics of the anomaly curve that make possible the determination of depth, size and dip of a subsurface body. The Spontaneous Polarization Field Set Up by an Ore Body If a sulphide ore body is subjected to oxidation varying in degree in its upper and lower parts according to the difference in the concentration of oxygen within the surrounding medium, an electrical potential field is set up. The form and distribution of this field will be investigated herein with special reference to its components on the earth,s surface. Under the simplifying assumption that the ore body may be considered as a dipole with the point sources Q1 and Q2 situated at its upper and lower ends (Fig. I), the potential of the spontaneous polarization at point P is given by the following equation:

REJUVENATED is an apt word to apply to Chino, Kennecott's big open-pit mine at Santa Rita, New Mexico. Back in 1923 Chino was merged with Ray by an exchange of shares, and in 1926 the Ray-Chino combination was taken over by Nevada Consolidated through an issue of bonds that were traded for the Ray and Chino assets. Subsequently, of course, the whole package was acquired by the Kennecott Copper Corporation. On the basis of the terms of the Ray-Chino-Nevada exchanges, Chino was rated third in value, something less than thirty per cent of the total. In 1955 the appraisal would doubtless be forty per cent or more. But it is not only vis-a-vis Ray and Nevada that Chino has blossomed out. At the end of 1931, Chino ranked seventh among the Porphyries in point of output; whereas by the end of 1954 it was fifth,. having passed both Inspiration and Nevada Consolidated. Sharp curtailment in production in 1932-33-34 and total suspension in the two years following (see Fig. 21) found the property in a somewhat parlous position. However, the engineers had not been idle; they had been planning for the future, and in 1937 a far-reaching program of rejuvenation was launched. During the ensuing five years, capital expenditures totaled more than $8,500,000. Among the projects undertaken were the following: (1) Mine-Purchase of larger and better equipment for drilling, loading, and transporting the ore. (2) Mine-Beginning of the first systematic project to leach and recover copper in the waste dumps at the mine.

Processing kaolin clays from the sedimentary deposits of Georgia and South Carolina is described in this article. While the major processing steps are touched on briefly, emphasis is given to the dewater-ing of the clay-water slurries (slips) formed in the processing of kaolin clays. The dewatering steps discussed include gravity settling, centrifugal dewatering, vacuum filtration and thermal drying. Particular attention is given to vacuum filtration and the variables affecting filtration of these kaolin clays. Kaolin consists essentially of the mineral kaolinite, which is a hydrated aluminum silicate (Al2O3 . 2SiO,). Commercial deposits of kaolin occur in several areas of the U. S., but approximately 90% of the kaolin produced in this country comes from Georgia and South Carolina. These deposits are of sedimentary nature and occur in a geological fall line in the Tuscaloosa formation at elevations between 300 and 450 ft above sea level. Over two million tons of kaolin clays are used by industry in the U. S. each year. A big percentage of this tonnage is used in the paper industry for coatings in making glossy and high quality grades of printing papers. In addition, large tonnages are used as pigments; as fillers for rubber, plastic and fertilizers; and in ceramics. Properties of kaolin that make it widely used in the above applications are its particle size fineness, natural whiteness, chemical stability and non-abrasiveness. In addition to these desirable properties, it is relatively inexpensive. The finer coating grades of clays range in price from $15 to $28 per ton while the coarser filler grades sell within a range of $7 to $13.50 per ton. Pure kaolin particles are small hexagonal flat platelets. Above the 2-p size, the particles usually consist of stacks of plates, while below the 2-p particle size they occur as individual flat, hexagonal plates. Since these individual platelet particles provide the most desirable coating and flow characteristics, major importance is given to particle size fractions of 2 p and smaller. Generally, coating grade clays are those with all particles smaller than 15 p and at least 70% of the particles less than 2p. These coating grades also have 50% or more of the particles smaller than 1 µ in size. The extremely fine grades of coating clay currently being produced approach the range of 100% smaller than 2p. The filler grades of kaolin have 100% of the particles passing 325 mesh but have less than 70% of their particles below the 2-p range. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of the major processing steps involved in preparing kaolin clays for marketing. MINING All kaolin mining is open pit. The ratio of overburden to clay will average 3:1, but this ratio can, of course, be much higher depending upon the grade of the clay and the size of the deposit. Most of the commercially mineable deposits occur from 20 to 120 ft below the ground surface. Both draglines and pans are used in removing the overburden and mining the clay deposit itself. New developments in air-gas lift practices in the Mid-Continent area since our Pall meeting in Fort Worth have done much to increase the efficiency of installations, and thus bring within economic limit of air-gas lift many wells which could not have been flowed profitably before. After the gas-lift had so thoroughly demonstrated its value in the Seminole field, its use spread to other areas and many installations were made of which the economy could be questioned. In the Seminole area, when production began to decline it was necessary either to increase the efficiency of the air or gas-lift or to put the wells on the pump, and pumping was not a process of lifting oil to which any operator looked forward with confidence. These conditions have resulted in the development of many practices which increase the efficiency and permit wells to be flowed with air or gas which earlier could not have been flowed economically, and wells which have been flowing to continue to a lower rate of production. The practices which have come into more common usage in the Mid-Continent area recently are mostly revivals of and improvements on practices which have been known in air-lift work for several years. Many arc peculiar to the individual well on which they are used. Intermittent Flowing Some interesting results are being obtained in Seminole and other districts by intermittent injection of gas. Gas is introduced during per-iods iods of 3 to 5 min. at a rate considerably over that necessary to acquire the production at a steady rate of injection, and is then cut off for a period of 3 to 15 min. Two to five wells are run from the same group of conlpressors. The total volume of gas required is sometimes reduced as much as one-third of that required when it is introduced at a constant rate, without changing the amount of oil production. The maximum pressure required is usually higher, but the average equal to or lower than that required for constant rate of flow. The effect on the wells is usually an irregular rate of flowing which may cause inconvenience where recycling is practiced. Bentonite, designating a distinct type of clay, is a young name in mineral nomenclature in the light of the age-old names of most other useful nonmetallics. The earliest references in literature are to "soap clay" (1873) "taylorite" (1888) and finally "bentonite" in 1897, from its occurrence in the Fort Benton series of rocks near Rock Creek, Albany County, Wyoming. Bentonite is a rock term and consists largely of montmorillonite clay. The latter name was proposed in 1847 for a plastic clay found at Montmorillon, France. A clay of apparently identical properties was described by Cronstedt of Sweden in 1788 and a number of other similar clays found in France were given other names in publications from 1853 to 1856. The mineral name montmorillonite was recognized by Dana in 1892. The recognition of "clay mineral" distinctions which led to the present-day classifications of clays by their chief mineral content, dawned in the early part of the twentieth century. Grim6 has aptly said: About 1924, Ross10 and some colleagues of the U. S. Geological Survey began a study of the mineral composition of clays that led to a series of monumental papers on the subject. By the early 1930's what has come to be known as the clay-mineral concept became firmly established in the minds of a great many people actively studying clay materials. The clay mineral concept designates the major clays as kaolins, montmorillonites and illites and by this concept bentonites are now defined as "fine-grained clays containing not less than 85 pct montmorillonite" and a wide variety of clays found all over the world are included in that classification. They could all properly be called "montmorillonite clays" but the common commercial name is bentonite. For a period of over forty years from the time of the earlier discoveries, bentonite was thought to be only the sodium type highswelling clay produced principally in Wyoming. By the clay mineral concept, non-swelling montmorillonite clays also became known as bentonite. In the trade there are two broad divisions-sodium bentonite, often called Wyoming or "western," which expands in water and carries sodium as its predominant exchangeable ion, and calcium bentonite often called "southern," which has negligible swelling and carries calcium as its principal exchangeable ion. There are many intermediate gradations. Properties The mineralogy and chemistry of the clays are so complex that the subject cannot be summarized briefly. The reader is referred to Chapter 12 of this volume in which the subject is treated at some length. Grim6 gave the formula for montmorillonite as (OH)4Si8AL4020.nH2O. He wrote: Montmorillonite is composed of units made up of two silica tetrahedral sheets with a central alumina octahedral sheet. . . . Exchangeable rations occur between the silicate layers. . . . The words "tetrahedral" and "octahedral" refer to the coordination number of the cations in the unit cell in the crystallographic lattice. Carroll5a stated: That the montmorillonite structure is the same as that of mica, but the layers are not held together by K+ ions; and water and other polar molecules, such as organic molecules, can enter between the unit layers and cause expansion. The hygiene of collieries was to have been separately considered, and the sanitary conditions of various metallurgical industries connected with mining were to receive an extended discussion, while at the same time the points treated in the paper as prosented at Pittsburgh were to have more ample illustration from American and European sources. Delay in obtaining expected information, and the continuous pressure of professional work, have prevented hitherto the execution of this plan ; and I can now publish only a portion of what I had designed to contribute to the subject. In the meantime this portion, but slightly changed, has been included as a chapter on the Hygiene of Metal Mines in a work entitled Hygiene and Public Health,, edited by Dr. A. H. Buck, of New York. An excellent chapter on the Hygiene of Coal Mines, contributed to the same work by Mr. Henry C. Sheafer, of Pottsville, affords me an opportunity to supply one of the deficiencies above alluded to. Mr. Shearer's chapter contains much material in the way of explanations not required by professional readers; And be moreover devotes a considerable space to the explosive gases, falls of roof, and other causes of accidents to life or limb—a branch of the subject not belonging strictly to bygiene. I therefore make extracts only from his treatise.—R. W. R ] It is convenient to divide mines, with reference to this subject, into two classes, collieries and metal-mines. Subterranean quarries, rock-salt mines, etc., present no conditions requiring them to be separated from the latter class.

The sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar; but very few, even of those who knew hinl well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ((Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. IN previous discussions on stresses in hoisting ropes, little has "been said concerning the effect of the elasticity of the rope itself on the stresses due to acceleration. Laschinger1 has calculated acceleration stresses. for several cases but he has ignored the elasticity of the rope as a factor, except as it compresses the drum and stretches itself as it winds thereon. He also deals with steam plants and he shows the effect of the "jerky" start of the engine. This effect would actually be reduced by the elasticity of the cable. With the advent of the motor-driven hoist, new conditions have arisen. The jerk mentioned by Laschinger has been eliminated and smoother starting made possible. But the elastic properties of the rope seem to introduce considerable periodic acceleration stresses in the rope. The following discussion of acceleration stresses is based on the assumption of a constant acceleration at the drum. To be exact, the mathematical work is based upon the assumption that the top is moving upward with a constant acceleration, and ignores the fact that the cable is shortening as it winds. However, the effect of the shortening would be inconsiderable during the first part of the acceleration period. Most hoisting engineers make the assumption of constant acceleration at the drum. Under the older method of calculating acceleration stresses, this would be true with a constant torque motor. But if stresses vary, as this paper attempts to show that they do, constant torque would not give constant acceleration, although the velocity-time curves obtained in the full size test herein described showed that they approach rather closely to this condition, at least as nearly as could be measured.

FROM the point of view of the metallographist, the adaptation of x-rays to the study of the crystal structure of metals is of the greatest importance. While one may hardly consider the findings resulting from x-ray study as revolutionary, their positive nature, compared with the deductions we have been forced to accept from the work that had gone before, gives firmer ground on which to build and furnishes new fields for speculation. Prior to the advent of the crystallogram, the best work on the crystal structure of steel was that of Osmond and Cartaud.1 They concluded, from their investigation with percussion figures formed at various temperatures, that alpha, beta, and gamma irons belonged to the cubic system and that they showed well-marked specific characteristics and could not have the same internal structure. What the internal structures were, they had no direct method of determining; but from a consideration. of the fact that the 001 plane (that parallel to the cube face) is a plane of perfect cleavage and minimum hardness in alpha iron and that the 111 (octahedral) plane is by far the most important in the crystallography of gamma iron, they were led to suggest the simple cubic arrangement as that of alpha and the face-centered cubic arrangement as that of gamma iron. They suggested the body-centered cubic arrangement as that of beta iron. The atomic arrangement of the various crystal forms of iron has been quite definitely determined in recent years by means of x-rays and the work of Westgren2 and Westgren and Phragmèn3 has been rather conclusive. They not only determined the atomic arrangement of alpha, beta, and gamma iron but also that of the high-temperature modification delta.

In developing a minicomputer application for an industrial grinding circuit, the control program is usually coded and the compilation is debugged on a remote access computing system. Final debugging must wait for installation of the minicomputer. This work reports on an alternative. Here both compilation and execution bugs are eliminated before the hardware is installed by testing the control program against a dynamic simulation. Attention is directed toward development of a particular real-time control program for an industrial wet grinding circuit in a copper concentrator. Specific data were supplied by the Anamax Mining Co. for a grinding division consisting of a rod mill followed by two ball mills in parallel. This information was used to set up a plausible model structure.

DEVELOPMENTS in Venezuela during the past few months have been obscured by the hap-penings in Seminole and, more recently, those in southwest Texas. The question has been asked whether or not the opening of these vast new, prolific areas in the United States may not have depressed prices to a point so low as to give the developments in the Caribbean countries a serious setback. Nothing of the kind, however, has taken place, and on the contrary, there has been demonstrated the fact that Venezuela can profitably produce great quantities of oil under existing market conditions, and at the same time finance the foundation for further large expan-sion in the future. The three big factors which contribute to place Venezuela in a unique position and tend to insure the steady expansion of its oil industry are, in the order of their importance: I. Reasonable oil laws backed by a sound govern-ment, which comprehends the all-important fact that the country's prosperity depends on the prosperity of its industries, in a word, perceiving that the goose which lays the golden egg merits considerate treatment. II. The low cost of placing Venezuela oil on our At-lantic seaboard; not over $0.60 per barrel. III. The uniformly high average production per well and the large area of some of the individual pools. Under these conditions Venezuelan producers may be expected to continue steady and profitable ex-pansion even in the face of further market slumps. Their position is analogous to that of the low-cost copper producers, and unless artificial barriers, such as tariffs, come into play, Venezuela will steadily grow in importance. Within less than five years it should be second only to the United States among the oil-producing countries of the world.

ARTHUR H. STORRS, Scranton, Pa.-I would like to ask whether this same process is applicable to bituminous coal? FELLS A. VOGEL, New York, N. Y.-This Dutch process is applicable to bituminous or any other kind of coal. The Berwind Fuel Co. has had a plant in operation, in Superior, Wis., for about 2 years, using the Dutch process, and it has made a very satisfactory briquette, using Pocahontas coal. There is just one item in Mr. Frey's paper I would like to discuss; that is, the matter of cost. Mr. Frey figures a total cost of $3.35, based on the use of 7 per cent. of oil. Of course, the price of oil has advanced seriously within the last year or two, and any possible reduction in the percentage of oil required in the manufacture of briquettes is very important. I believe that Mr. Frey will agree that very good briquettes can be made with considerably less than 7 per cent. of oil; in fact, actual experience has shown that it can be clone with less than 5 per cent. The only possible effects of a low percentage of oil, particularly in anthracite briquettes, are that the briquette might not burn so freely, and that it might not be quite so hard. Briquettes made by the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co., using 7 per cent. of binder, are extremely tough. Those briquettes have been handled in one of the local yards in Brooklyn, chuting them from railroad cars into boats and digging them out by grab buckets, and the losses average less than 2 per cent. This compares very favorably with domestic anthracite coal, with which the losses from breakage amount to between 7 and 10 per cent.

IN the early days of concrete construction, the question of quality of sand or gravel to be used as aggregate in concrete was given little or no consideration. If the construction engineer had sufficient quantity for his structure within a reasonable distance, he was contented and gave no thought to the possibility that the material might have adverse physical, chemical, or thermal properties which could cause future deterioration of his concrete and possible failure of his structure. Today a very different situation exists. With the building of larger and larger concrete structures, with a longer and longer life expectancy, the quality of the aggregate material has become of major importance. Even in small concrete structures aggregate quality cannot be passed off lightly and the quality of the aggregate must be such as to give the anticipated life without costly maintenance. The first question to arise in the selection of an aggregate is what makes a sand or gravel suitable or unsuitable for use in concrete, and how can its quality be judged. No one rock type can be depended upon to furnish sound durable material in all instances. Granitic rocks, for example, make very satisfactory aggregates in some cases, but they are among the most unsuitable of materials when they are fractured, weathered, or highly micaceous. Limestones make excellent concrete aggregates on the one hand, and on the other they may be unsound and lack durability if they contain appreciable clay, they may have a harmful chemical reaction with the cement if they contain amorphous silica, or they may have thermal characteristics which make them highly unsuitable for use in concrete. Each rock, gravel, or sand must be proved on its own merits for the particular job under consideration. The selection of suitable aggregate materials may be divided into two major phases, the geological phase which is carried on largely in the field, and the testing phase which of course is a laboratory problem; both are important. Very often the geological phase alone is sufficient for the selection of satisfactory aggregates for minor structures but for major structures both phases must be thoroughly investigated. Geological Phase In the southwest part of the country nearly every major rock type, igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary, may be found with all imaginable intermediate phases and in all imaginable stages of alteration. Frequently very different rock types, different as to geological age, composition, and condition occur very close together. Alluvium and stream-bed sands and gravels will consist of many different rock types and even ledge rocks may vary radically as to texture and composition within the area of a quarry site. Some of the rocks make suitable aggregate materials whereas others are highly deleterious in concrete. Too often the good and the bad occur together and more than ordinary caution is required in aggregate selection. Aggregate Sources: Concrete aggregates are usually obtained from stream-bed sands and gravels or from ledge rocks. Each has certain favorable and unfavorable characteristics and it is sometimes necessary to investigate both types to determine the most suitable source for a specific structure. Stream Beds: The predominant sources of aggregate materials in southern California and Arizona are stream beds. Vast quantities of sands and gravels are brought from the mountain ranges by the rivers during times of flood but most of these streams are dry a large part of the time and hence these deposits make easily accessible sources of aggregate materials. IN the early days of concrete construction, the question of quality of sand or gravel to be used as aggregate in concrete was given little or no consideration. If the construction engineer had sufficient quantity for his structure within a reasonable distance, he was contented and gave no thought to the possibility that the material might have adverse physical, chemical, or thermal properties which could cause future deterioration of his concrete and possible failure of his structure. Today a very different situation exists. With the building of larger and larger concrete structures, with a longer and longer life expectancy, the quality of the aggregate material has become of major importance. Even in small concrete structures aggregate quality cannot be passed off lightly and the quality of the aggregate must be such as to give the anticipated life without costly maintenance. The first question to arise in the selection of an aggregate is what makes a sand or gravel suitable or unsuitable for use in concrete, and how can its quality be judged. No one rock type can be depended upon to furnish sound durable material in all instances. Titanium of commercial purity (RC-70) and two all-a (hcp) alloys (4Al-1/4O2 and 5Al-2.5Sn) were tested in sheet form under conditions of combined-stress loading. Plane-strain compression and plane -strain tension together with uniaxial compression and tension provided information for constructing the tension-tension and compression-compression quadvants of the plane-stress yield locus. Coordinate values were obtained from yield-strength measurements; the slope at each point was based on a plastic-strain ratio. The materials represented a wide range of plastic anisotropy, which was reflected in correspondingly varied departures of the yield locus from that for iso-tropy. The tension-tension and compression-compression quadrants were not identical. If the uniaxial yield strength is insensitive to direction and the sign of the applied stress, the Mises or perhaps the Tresca criterion is adequate for predicting the onset of yielding under combined-stress loading. The prediction is not so straightforward in plastically anisotropic material. Depending upon details of texture, combined-stress yielding resistance may be substantially different from that indicated by the usual criteria.' However. a continuum theory of yielding under such conditions is available for reasonably direct application.2,3 Whether or not it can be used successfully must, of course, depend upon how closely the conditions of the theory are satisfied in the material in question. In its present form the theory contains no provision for Bauschinger-type effects, nor does it allow for the consequences that might grow out of deformation by more than one mechanism, e.g., by slip and twinning.4 With those limitations, more importance must be attached to experimental information about the yield surface for anisotropic materials. Studies of the yield surface have generally been confined to states of plane stress (tension-tension and tension-compression) established in thin-wall tubes by externally applied forces and internal pressure. That approach would be entirely suitable for anisotropic materials if they were available in tube form or in sufficient bulk to be machined into test specimens. 6-9 It would not serve for the textured and anisotropic sheets of much current engineering interest, unless sheet could be formed into high-pressure tubing without structural change. Since there would seem to be little chance of the latter, practical alternatives are needed. One such alternative is the subject of this paper. It involves the use of a few selected but relatively simple uniaxial loading tests on sheet specimens. The underlying idea is presented here with some details relating to application and a few results bearing on how well it has worked. THE BASIS OF TESTING Conventional Measurements. Yielding for a general case of anisotropy is described by the plane-stress locus in Fig. 1. Reference directions in the sheet specimen are related to the stress coordinates as shown with the insert: x is the rolling direction, y the transverse direction, and z the through-thickness direction. The four reference-direction yield strengths (t, tension; c, compression), Xt, Xc, Yt, and Yc, are all different. Nine paths that can be followed in uniaxial loading experiments are identified. Paths 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent conventional tension and compression testing to establish Xt, Yt,.Xc, and Yc. Useful information also comes from the ratio of the transverse plastic-strain components associated with yielding and flow in conventional tension or compression. A condition to be satisfied in locus construction is that the plastic-strain vector be everywhere normal to the locus.10 The projection of the vector which would

The occasional reports of progressive furnace-men, giving the results of physical tests to prove the superior qualities of their pig-irons, have encouraged the writer to believe that the time is ripe for the discussion of such work, and the inauguration of some correct system by which the furnace-man and the founder could make intelligent comparison of the elements of strength, deflection, contraction, and chill presented in pigmetal. In most cases the physical tests now made by furnace-men define but one quality in the iron, and are generally too vague to permit any true comparison. For example, one furnaceman tells us he can punch holes in his cast-iron, wishing it to be inferred that the iron is very soft and strong. Another furnace casts a long wedge, the thin end running to a knife's edge, which is supposed to prove the fluidity of the iron, for the founder's benefit. Another casts in square-cornered " chills," to define the hardness or softness of the metal. To the writer's knowledge these tests are not advocated by their originators as suitable for standards; and they are, to his mind, but evidence of unrest on the part of progressive furnace-men, who feel that something should be done in the line of physical tests. The writer knows of no furnace-men who make and keep records of the strength of their iron obtained by means of tests made on recognized standard testing-scales ; but he does know of a prominent furnace-salesman, who, not long ago, came into possession of a 1-inch square bar that stood 1400 pounds
