In 1969 "Société des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille-Montagne" produced 221,000 tons zinc ingots and 22,000 tons zinc dust, thus rating highest on the world's zinc producer list. The Company's plant at Balen, Belgium, with an output of 135,000 tons electrolytic zinc is the most important one of this group; it is an integrated metallurgical zinc and lead unit with recovery of most by-products. The present paper describes the zinc production facilities. The roasting section includes four fluid bed roasters (total concentrates charged: 740 tpd) and two sulfuric acid having a corresponding capacity. Calcine is leached in a fully automated plant by a two-step continuous process. Leaching residues, mixed with lead furnace slag, are treated in a shaft furnace. The recovered zinc fume is leached separately. In the near future, the leaching residues are to be treated by a wet process, developed in the Company's own laboratories. Purification of solutions is accomplished in two steps: antimony and zinc dust are added in the first one, only zinc dust in the second one for removal of cadmium. Electrolysis cells are partly of a conventional type. A new type of cell configuration was put onstream in October, 1969, planned output 60,000 tpy. Main features of the new cell rooms are the fully automatic pulling, stripping and replacing of the jumbo-size cathodes (immersed area 2.6 m2). Zinc cathodes are remelted in induction furnaces followed by in-line automatic casting and stacking machines.

Over the period 2000 to 2003, roof falls have accounted for 4 to 14% of the fatalities in underground mining operations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the frequency, exposure, and risk of these events through an ongoing program of field and laboratory studies. One area of research involves the evaluation of polyurethane grouting technology that is commonly used to stabilize fractured mine roof strata. Concurrently, NIOSH is conducting work to evaluate the application of ground penetrating radar for advanced delineation of problematic mining areas. In this study, NIOSH partnered with Sub-Technical, Inc. who injected a polyurethane grout (also known as glue) into a roof area of NIOSH’s Safety Research Coal Mine. The mine roof area was scanned using ground penetrating radar technology before and after grout injection in an attempt to determine the extent of grout infiltration. A comparison of the pre-and post-grouting radar records showed a significant change at a mine roof depth of about four to five feet. The interpreted radar records were then compared with drill core information, borescope evaluation of roof-bolt holes in the study area, and underground observations. At this site, the interpretations of the radar records correlated with data obtained from the core holes, borescope evaluations and underground observations. This study showed that ground penetrating radar technology can be a useful tool for detecting changes in mine roof due to the injection of the grout.

Successful design, operation and completion of a surface waste management facility for a diamond mine located in Canada?s northern environment requires careful planning to minimize short and long term environmental impacts. As part of the mine development application process, best practice standards were applied using conventional engineering to reduce the environmental effects of the mine waste facility at the Snap Lake Diamond Project. This paper presents the design criteria, site conditions, material characteristics and engineering management objectives considered for optimization of the development plan. Insight into the engineering analyses, development alternatives, monitoring program and reclamation strategy plan to be undertaken during mine operations to provide opportunity for adaptive management and to minimize environmental impacts is provided.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of iron ore from 129 domestic and foreign mines and deposits in 25 market economy countries. The availability of four products on a total and regional basis was determined from demonstrated resources of 75.3 billion It. From the resources evaluated there are a total of 18.6 billion It of sinter fines, 4.9 billion It of lump ore, 14.7 billion It of pellets, and 820 MMlt of pellet feed potentially available at a 15-pct DCFROR, f.o.b. port. On a regional basis, at or below a total cost of $0.26 per iron unit there are 1.7 billion It, 2.8 billion It, and 186 MMlt of sinter fines potentially available from Brazil, Australia, and Africa, respectively. There are 825 MMlt of lump ore from Brazil and 1.4 billion It from Australia potentially available at or below a total cost of $0.24 per iron unit. There are 2.1 billion It of pellets potentially available from the United States at or below a total cost of $0.80 per iron unit, while 442 MMlt are potentially available in Brazil at or below $0.38 per iron unit. South America has 208 MMlt of pellet feed potentially available at or below a total cost of $0.28 per iron unit. While the resources of iron ore are more than adequate to satisfy demand, the future of the iron ore industry is very dependent upon changes in the world economy, and on the domestic scene, changes in the domestic steel industry and steel imports.

A new framework that collates and interprets pre-existing data to assess vulnerability and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise flood-related risk to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue has been developed. The æClimate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation ResultsÆ (CRATER) method tested at a coal mine in Queensland, provides semi-quantitative information to assist decision makers when designating investment for minimising vulnerability of mining operations to climate. Here we present the processes involved in this three-step approach that uses pre-existing spatial data of the mine site and local knowledge to build a set of visual tools to assist decision-making. The first step of the process is performing multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS) on ranked natural conditions at the mine, such as elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation, which is performed to identify critical flood areas. Secondly, a fault-tree analysis identifies how impact can occur and what options there are for impact reduction. Finally, a resource assessment of the mineÆs capacity to adapt reduces the adaptation options to those most suited to the mine. The results are confidential, but for the purpose of introducing the methodology, we present simplified results, particularly of steps 2 and 3. CRATER can also be used for future æwhat-ifÆ flooding scenarios to identify the most suitable locations for roads, buildings or other critical infrastructure. The methodology is transferable to any mine, series of mines or locations along the mining value chain that have sufficient data, providing a practical decision-making tool to identify æno-regretsÆ actions that not only could reduce downtime after or during an event, but in some cases may enhance production between extreme events. During the years 1945, 1946 , 1947 , and up to July 1, 1948, only one death was caused by mine fires in bituminous - coal mines of the United States . The one fatality occurred in an Illinois mine in December 1945, and , therefore, there had been a period of 2-1/2 years in which no deaths occurred as the result of mine fires . Moreover, 1946 was the first year since 1930 in which no deaths occurred from mine fires . This record is markedly better than that of 1944 , when 89 fatalities and great property damage were caused by mine fires in bituminous - coal mines and 16 additional men were killed by an explosion that occurred while they were attempting to seal a mine fire .

Surface tension, density and viscosity coefficient of acidic copper sulfate solutions simulating electrolyte solution for electrolytic production of copper have been measured and are summarized as a function of the solution composition and temperature. Nickel sulfatc is taken to be a representative coexisting sulfate that affects the physical properties of the copper sulfate electrolyte solution. The sulfates in the solutions, including sulfuric acid, increase the physical properties under consideration. Gelatin, representing organic additives for electrolyte solution, was found to sensitively affect the surface tension of the solution at low concentration of up to 200mgIL. The surface tension was markedly lowered by the addition of gelatin and the increasing concentration of gelatin led to a more pronounced decrease in the observed values. The surface tension gradually increases with time after addition of gelatin and the increase is enhanced by higher acid concentration and higher temperature. The observed change in the surface tension is considered to reflect the preferential adsorption of gelatin to the bubble-solution interface and the decomposition of gelatin due to hydrolysis to form various molecules having smaller molecular weights.

The present study was designed to explore the contribution of organizational climate and management practices to the injury experience in underground coal mines. A cross-lagged panel design was used in which miners from 22 mines completed questionnaires assessing 27 organizational climate, structure, and function dimensions on two occasions, The results strongly support the hypothesis that climate and management practice have casual effect on the incidence of disabling injuries.

"As part of a larger research program, a number of MEGATEM airborne electromagnetic (EM) test flights were flown over the Gallen massive sulfide deposit in northwest Québec. A particularity of this test site is that a major part of the ore body was extracted before the MEGATEM survey. Therefore one of the purposes of this study was to verify the ability of the system to detect the remaining massive sulfides below the water in the open pit. The open pit is also surrounded by a metallic fence, and a power line is present in the vicinity. A large part of the case study involved accounting for the impact of infrastructure and acidic water on the survey, which will help in the interpretation of airborne EM responses in complex exploration situations.The Gallen deposit was also previously flown with the INPUT and GEOTEM airborne EM systems before the major exploitation period. A comparison between the results from the different survey results allows estimation of the physical properties of the Gallen deposit, which is a relatively poor conductor.A new method for removing the power line signal shows amplitudes with a smaller residual associated with the emanating fields, and more compact, cleaner responses associated with induced currents. This will make it easier to identify bedrock conductors close to power lines"

This paper uses the results of research trials by Landcare Research and Forest Research Institute and assessments of reclamation plantings at mines and other drastically disturbed sites to describe methods of enhancing restoration of native forests. The characteristics of mine and forest environments are compared to highlight the difficulties facing restoration and techniques which result in successful restoration are described. Selection of the most appropriate technique is illustrated by describing restoration of lowland beech-podocarp forest at a West Coast coal mine. The key to successful reclamation is to understand the factors controlling and limiting plant establishment and growth, then to design rooting media, surfaces and management regimes to create a favourable environment. This paper concludes with a summary of the planning and technical factors which are critical for successful restoration of native forest.

"SGS Minerals commissioned an internal R&D program to develop in-house expertise to design, set up and operate REE separation pilot campaigns at its Lakefield, Canada site. A team approach was used that included expert consultants in the field of REE separation as well as in-house expertise supported by the on-site Analytical Laboratories.A mini pilot scale SX circuit was designed and constructed consisting of several modular banks of 30 stages each. About 80 stages of mixer-settlers were used to separate Pr and Nd from La and Ce contained in a synthetic REE chloride stream simulating the raffinate from an initial La-Nd|Sm-Lu+Y separation.Two pilot campaigns were operated totalling 25 days of 24/7 operation with 99.4% plant availability in the final 20 day campaign. Purities of > 99.9% in the Pr-Nd strip liquor and > 99% in the La- Ce raffinate were achieved and simultaneously sustained in the second campaign for prolonged operating periods. Key to controlling and adjusting the circuit was the rapid assay turnaround (as low as 2 hours) provided by the on-site SGS analytical lab. This permitted the operating team to modify conditions and observe the effect of changes relatively quickly considering the large number of stages. A portable XRF analyser was also used to track evolving assay trends in the circuit. The small physical size of the circuit enabled longer operation with a limited amount of sample.This paper discusses the design of the circuit, operating conditions, some of the key operating factors and controls and results obtained.INTRODUCTIONSGS Minerals commissioned the design of and built a solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant for the separation of rare earth elements (REE). The plant consists of a battery of 120 mixer-settlers set up in a dedicated piloting facility.The purpose of the programme was to develop capabilities and in-house expertise in REE SX separation technology. The program aimed to establish operating procedures, sampling regimes, and analytical methodologies and protocols for this type of process/plant. A team comprised of SGS personnel and several external consultants with prior industrial and REE separation piloting experience was assembled to achieve these objectives."

The Mildred Lake Settling Basin (MLSB) is the largest disposal site for mature fine tailings (MFT) at the Syncrude Canada Ltd oil sands plant. Over the past years (since 1997), there has been a marked change in the consolidation behaviour of MFT in the MLSB, which is attributed to microbial activity. Methane-producing microorganisms, known as methanogens, have become very active, and large amounts of biogas (mainly methane) have been produced. In certain regions within the MLSB, gas bubbles are released to the water surface of the tailings pond. Continued field monitoring of the MLSB has provided convincing evidence of the rapid densification process (rapid water drainage from the tailings). This phenomenon contradicts the consolidation models for MFT developed over the past 20 years. The above phenomenon has also been reported at the oil sands tailings ponds operated by Suncor Energy Ltd. in Fort McMurray. This rapid densification has caused pumping challenges in the transfer of fine tailings from the Mildred Lake Settling Basin for the creation of composite tailings. The rapid densification of the MFT may also have potential positive effects in accelerating the reclamation of the oil sands fine tailings. A field and laboratory research program is underway to study the mechanism leading to the rapid densification phenomenon. Systematic field investigations were performed to determine the distribution and characteristics of the rapidly densified MFT. Gas bubble distribution on the water surface was mapped to determine the zones of different biological activities in the pond. These field investigations provided solid ground for further experimental and theoretical research. A number of small-scale column tests were carried out to observe the gas evolution and to measure the changes of some geotechnical parameters under different microbial activity. Also, a series of gassy MFT densification tests are being conducted to study the mechanism of the rapid densification of the MFT under microbiological activity. A review and discussion of the research program is given and some preliminary research results are presented in the paper.

The rock quality designation (RQD) is a commonly used index for the classification and evaluation of rock mass quality and is widely adopted in mining and geological engineering. The traditional method of obtaining RQD still requires manual measurement of core length and calculation of RQD, which is inefficient. To address this problem, we propose a framework for drilling core image segmentation and RQD estimation from digital images of cores in core boxes based on the deep learning algorithm. The proposed framework is generated by combining the Mask Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask R-CNN) instance segmentation algorithm, the U-Shaped Convolutional Neural Networks (U-Net) semantic segmentation algorithm, and the image processing functions of the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV). To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, seven boreholes in the Xiushuihe vanadium-titanium magnetite mine, located in the Sichuan Province, China, were used as the case study. According to the comparison of the manual measurements and calculations of the cores taken from seven boreholes used to conduct this study, the framework can record the length of the drill cores and calculate RQD within an average error rate of 3.42%, while it saves about 85% of the working time. The results illustrate that the proposed framework enhances the efficiency of RQD calculation while satisfying the engineering requirements.

A wide variety of mining conditions exists within the South Midlands Area and across this range of conditions more than one half of the mines are highly susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Two thick seams in which the greatest risk exists are described and illustrated. The different heatings which take place are categorized by the locations at which they occur in the mines: additional special cases not easily categorized by location are discussed separately. The discussion for each category of heating follows the pattern of: (i) the reasons why it occurs; (ii) when it arises the means by which it is fought, and (iii) the preventive measures taken in an attempt to avoid its occurrence. Relatively new factors which may affect the incidence of heatings are highlighted and suggestions are made which may assist in reducing the number of incidents in the Area. A new method of continuous sampling, analysis and recording is described and mention made of an original method of interpreting carbon monoxide results with the aid of the computer. The first results from this work show that an early warning is given of an adverse change in trend several weeks earlier than with the present methods. Lastly, suggestions are made about the direction in which research might proceed to assist in reducing the special hazards created by several features inherent in the present methods of mining.

One of the first matters to receive attention from the Bureau of Mines when it was authorized to undertake investigations relating to wastes in the mineral industries was the smoke problem at smelting and ore-roasting plants. This bulletin is published by the bureau primarily for persons who seek information on the subject of metallurgical smoke but are unacqllainted with the technical language of metallurgy. It is, of course, not possible to free a techniCal subject entirely from teclmicalities, but, 80 far as possible, statements are made in plain and simple English. Metallurgical smoke causes considerable friction between the metallurgical industry and agriculture in certain parts of the country. Owners of smelting plants are making every effort to devise ways and means to do away with possible damage and annoyance from smoke and are meeting with success. The problem is peculiarly difficult in this country because of the large tonnages of material that must be handled. The solution of the problem is not yet at hand and much work still remains to be done. As the mineral industry is one of the great basic industries of the country and of necessity is entitled to full consideration, it should be accorded freedom to work out the smoke problem to the benefit of all concerned. The effort is made in this paper to present the problem of metallurgical smoke as it actually exists, without bias of any kind. The writer takes this opportunity to express his indebtedness to the sources of information on which he drew, many of which are enumerated in the selected bibliography at the end of this paper. In connection with the author's use of the present tense in describing plants and methods, the reader should note that none of the references in that bibliography is of later date than 1913. Much information was obtained by personal visits and by correspondence, and thanks are hereby tendered to all persons who kindly furnished data. The writer desires to thank particularly F. G. A major concern with blasting at surface mines is generation of ground vibrations and airblast and their effects on nearby residences. This Bureau of Mines report looks at the use of millisecond delays in blast design and their effect on the resulting ground vibrations and airblast. A total of 52 production blasts were instrumented and monitored at a surface coal mine in southern Indiana. Arrays of seismographs were used to gather time histories of vibrations and airblast. The data were analyzed for peak values of vibration and airblast and for frequency con-tent. Various delay intervals were used within and between rows of blastholes. Delay intervals within rows were 17 and 42 ms, and those between rows ranged from 30 to 100 msj these intervals are equivalent to 0.5 and 1.3 ms/ft within rows and 1.2 to 4.3 ms/ft between rows. Sub-sonic delay intervals within rows reduced airblast by 6 dB. Large delay intervals between rows reduced the amplitude of ground vibrations; their frequency depended primarily upon the geology of the mine site.

"INTRODUCTION Alunite occurs within a radius of 10 miles of Marysvale, Piute County, Utah, in veins and as replacements of igneous rocks. A number of each type of deposit was explored by the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, under the Strategic Minerals program during 1942. The exploratory work comprised geologic and topographic mapping, diamond drilling,,bulldozer and hand trenching, sinking test pits, rehabilitation of old workings, sampling alunite exposures, and constructing and repairing roads.ACKNOWLEDGNENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits; the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. INTRODUCTION The Brightwater conveyance system project in King County, Washington consists of constructing about 21 km (13 mile) of effluent and combined influent and effluent tunnels. The influent tunnels will collect sanitary sewerage from the service area and convey it to the new wastewater treatment plant (WTP) site at Route 9 in Woodinville, Snohomish County, Washington. The effluent tunnels will convey treated effluent from the WTP to an outfall at Puget Sound. The tunnels will be constructed primarily under residential areas, busy suburban roads and state highways. This 21 Km (13-mile) soft ground tunneling project faced many design challenges because of the geologic and hydrostatic conditions, long tunnel reaches, and large overburden depths. Boring depths typically varied from 45.7 M (150 ft) to 114 M(375 ft) with a maximum depth of 185.6 M (566 ft) deep. Conventional empirical methods for non-mountain terrain based on a 1:1 ratio of drilled footage per foot of tunnel bore (National Research Council, 1984) for evenly spaced borings provided a good start for the Phase 1 explorations. However a continuation of this approach with closer spacing was deemed inadequate by the geotechnical team for efficiently allocating geotechnical exploration resources for the final design. This paper presents a rational approach that was used to evaluate the value of a particular geotechnical exploration boring, pump test or other in-situ test. The method of analysis, which was initially developed for rock tunnels (Einstein et al., 1978), was modified for the Brightwater project. The method considers the potential construction cost risks resulting from variable geologic conditions, the cost and reliability of the geotechnical exploration and the earned value (cost risk reduction) of performing the geotechnical exploration. Geophysical methods are useful non-invasive means of collecting subsurface information on the environmental impacts of resource developments. Techniques such as seismic refraction, ground probing radar and magnetics are well established tools for environmental studies of waste disposal sites. Repeat resistivity surveys, gravity surveys, and infrared or multispectral remote sensing hold great promise for monitoring environmental changes. Examples from New Zealand include geothermal field monitoring, which may involve the use of geophysics for .detecting changes of surface thermal activity, hydrothermal eruptions, induced earthquakes, contamination or depletion of shallow groundwater, and subsurface fluid recharge. Other examples include resistivity monitoring of contained effluent disposal ponds, tailings dams and landfills. Experience has shown that care is necessary to identify the natural variability of the parameter measured before drawing conclusions regarding an observed change.
