Chalcocite flotation concentrates (26-34 percent Cu and 6-7 percent S) were roasted in air to determine sulfur elimination as a function of temperature, airflow rate, and residence time. Fluosolids roasting was evaluated batchwise and continuously in a 4-inch fluid-bed reactor. Kiln roasting tests were carried out in a 4-inch ID by 6-inch-long rotary drum. Pelletizing the very fine concentrates prior to roasting was essential to minimize dust losses and accretions. Concentrate pellets, sized minus 10 plus 20 mesh and bonded with 2 percent bentonite, were excellent feed for fluosol¬ids roasting and limited dust losses to 10 percent or less. One-fourth-inch pellets were best suited to kiln roasting. Both techniques were capable of producing copper calcines analyzing well under 1 percent residual sulfur when operated at 900° C with average retention times of 3 to 4 hours. Calcined pellets were strong, porous, and readily reducible.

With increasing environmental constraints on the levels of disturbance induced by blasting operations upon nearby residents, there is an increasing need to be able to design cautious blasting with greater precision. Therefore, determination of maximum amount of explosive per delay for a certain distance especially in large blasts is of great importance for the elimination of these environmental problems. Although too many research studies had been carried out in the past in order to eliminate environmental issues produced from blasting unfortunately a general approach or formula has not been established yet because of the complexity of the matter. In addition to the wave and ground motion characteristics, the complexity of blasting parameters and site factors restrict the developing a general criterion. So experimental site-specific studies should be still done in order to predict and control blasting effects. This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in Espey Open-Pit Boron (Colemanite) Mine located on the west side of the central Anatolia near Kütahya province in Turkey. Within the scope of this study, ground vibration components were measured for 13 shots during bench blast optimisation studies in order to predict peak particle velocity level for this site. In blasting operations; ANFO and Powergel Magnum 600 (blasting agent), Powergel Magnum (priming) and delay electric detonators (firing) were used as explosives. Parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events using 4 different types vibration monitors (3 White Mini-Seis and 1 Instantel Minimate Plus Models). Then, the data pairs of scaled distance and particle velocity obtained from the 38 record events were analysed statistically. At the end of statistical evaluation of the data pairs, an empirical relation which gives average line at 95% confidence level and upper bound 95% prediction line with a reasonable correlation coefficient was established between peak particle velocity and scaled distance.

THE study of diamond drill results at the Lake Athabaska property of Athona Mines, Limited, and the co-ordination of information secured, has demanded extensive application of methods for interpreting true conditions, both structurally and from the point of view of ore outlook. This work was in charge of a capable engineer, who, as the result of exhaustive study of the drill cores, has been able to issue maps and plans exceeding the expectations of the majority of engineers and geologists who visited the field during the past summer (1935); that is, having in view the fact that staking of the property had been completed but a few months beforehand and that geological conditions were practically unknown up to the time drilling began in April. The following pages present an outline of the work of the assay and engineering offices in co-ordinating and interpreting the results of the drilling. The writer desires to acknowledge the suggestions offered by A.P. Beavan, geologist and engineer at Athona Mines, whom he assisted during the drilling campaign, and also the co-operation of the drilling contractor's employees. The geological map, mine plans, and forms accompanying the paper are from the Company's engineering office files.

This report is in partial fulfillment of Contract S0241051 awarded to COMINEC on June 27, 1974. 'Me purpose of the work under this contract is to develop a conceptual design for an automated longwall mining system. The conceptual design will serve as the basis for future design and development of an automated longwall mining system capable of sustained production in excess of 2,500 tons per shift with reduced manpower which will ultimately be demonstrated in an area where conventional longwall mining has been successful. 1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM 1.2.1 Why An Automated System The most obvious benefit of automation and remote control in a longwall mining system is the reduction of accidents consequent upon a reduced working force in the hazardous face areas. However, another important aspect of the problem is the skilled labor shortage which is being compounded by the need for vastly increased coal production. The United States coal mining industry had a working force of almost 600,000 miners in 1928 but was able to muster only 145,000 miners in 1970. The miners required to staff the additional working sections and the new mines necessary to meet our energy needs are simply not available. Only automation and remote control will permit a reduced work force with increased production by keeping the face equipment operating continuously.

The mineral industry" has made and will continue to make important contributions to the growth of our economy. However, the industry is presently under continuous and increasingly severe attacks by organizations and individuals interested in the preservation of our environment. Yet neither the public interest value of preservation nor the public interest value of our mineral industry is known. In the absence of such values, judgments about best land use where minerals are involved are nearly always made on emotional grounds. An example of the sort of problem that has been created is in the New York Metropolitan Area. Because of institutionally-created shortages stemming largely from zoning decisions and building over deposits, the effective cost of fine aggregate delivered at dockside at Manhattan rose from $2. 65/cubic yard in July, 1969, to $4.10/cubic yard in May, 1970, this in spite of approximately ;l0,000 years of reserves on Long Island. The cost of fine aggregate for New York City alone has "Increased over $S million annually within one year, with the cost increase for the Tri-State Metropolitan Area (coastal Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York)" exceeding $10 million annually. The ab0ve situation has created a cost increase which is clearly the result of non-conservation of a mineral resource. That is, in readily measurable values, it Is costing the public about $10 million per year because good conservation practices were ignored-a public-interest loss. Admittedly, this is not the whole story because the public is simultaneously obtaining other values from the land surface that would otherwise have had to be dedicated, temporarily to be sure, to mineral recovery-a public-interest gain. However, the point is that we do not know where the balance lies-the net public interest value; it may lie one way for deposits zoned out of existence by a growing suburb, another for areas designed as permanent greenbelts, and still another for areas under new highways

The Experimental Mine of the United States Bureau of Mines is a unique coal mine that serves as a large-scale testing laboratory. It is used primarily for testing the explosibility of coal-dust and gases but is also the workshop for many other kinds of research work of which the chief object is to increase safety in mining. The mine is situated in Allegheny County, Pa., about 13 miles southwest of Pittsburgh among the high hills of the west bank of the Monongahela River, at the northeastern edge of the gas-coal district of the Pittsburgh coal bed which extends south through the Connellsville coking-coal district into West Virginia. The Pittsburgh bed, of the Upper Carboniferous age, is one of the most extensive continuous coal beds in the United States, if not in the world. Throughout large areas it shows remarkable uniformity of thickness, levelness, and character of coal, which is a coking coal of high-grade bituminous rank. Its thickness in the northern part is 5 to 5 ½ feet and in the central and southern part is 7 to 9 feet.

"INTRODUCTION Early in 1936 the Interstate Oil Compact Commission and other groups interested in forecasts of demand for petroleum requested the Bureau of Mines to make a physical inventory of crude-oil stocks in the United States, Accordingly, the 74th Congress appropriated funds for conducting such a survey during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1937. In the discussions and hearing 2/ relative to the need for the survey, the opinion was expressed that crude oil held in storage for long periods had lost so much of its gasoline content that the economic significance of total stocks should be discounted materially. Therefore, a primary objective of the survey was to make a physical inventory of the crude oil held in storage above ground and to determine the quantities and characteristics of the light fractions contained in the various stocks."

Based on the 2010-2019 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database, 91% of reported ground control accident in the US longwall mines were caused by gateroad roof instability. This can be related to the significant changes in loading conditions that gateroads are subject to from the development to the longwall abutment loading phases, combined with the thinly bedded shale roof, found in many US longwall coal mines. One of the challenges in designing efficient support systems is to understand the roof instability mechanisms along with support-roof interactions under this complex loading condition. Field monitoring of roof displacement and stress changes coupled with detailed analyses using numerical models are well-documented techniques to study the causes of roof instabilities. However, traditional modeling techniques require additional calibration to simulate delamination and buckling of shale roof, one of the main roof instability mechanisms in longwall mines. One alternative modeling technique is the UDEC Bonded Block Method (BBM) where bedded roof and support interactions can be explicitly captured. This paper presents the development of a BBM model of a longwall entry at a 180 m depth of cover with a three-entry gateroad layout along with roof extensometer monitoring results. The models are validated against the monitoring data, showing the potential for BBM numerical models capturing the complex roof and support system interactions to assist with optimizing gateroad layouts and support systems.

"DC Water’s First Street Tunnel (FST) is part of the $2.6 billion Clean Rivers Project designed to reduce the occurrence of combined sewer overflows into local waterways. Due to flood events in the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park neighborhoods, the FST Project was accelerated by DC Water to mitigate future flooding by boosting storage capacity and thus relieving the undersized combined sewers.The FST Project was finalized in 2016 as a collaborative effort between DC Water, its consulting team consisting of Greeley & Hansen and McMillen Jacobs Associates, and the design-build team of Skanska, Jay Dee Contractors (SKJD) with WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff as the designer.Scope of project. The FST Project (Fig. 1) included four primary shaft sites, a large 6 m (20 ft) internal diameter, 823- m (2,700-ft) long bored tunnel and three adit connections from the off-line shafts to the large-diameter tunnel. The adits which vary in size and length, are the subject of this article. The Channing Street site (Fig. 2) was established as the main site for an Earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) and included a 49-m (160-ft) deep shaft with slurry wall support of excavation and 20-m (65-ft) internal diameter final cast-in-place permanent concrete liner. The construction sites at Adams Street, V Street and Thomas Street each consisted of off-line shaft structures tied to near-surface sewer diversion chambers and ventilation facilities. These three off-line shafts were connected to the large bored TBM tunnel via adit tunnels. Each of the three adits had a portion or the entire length excavated by sequential excavation method (SEM) in frozen ground.The Adams Street adit (Fig. 3) was constructed in two phases. The first phase is the 23-m (75-ft) long and 5-m (16-ft) diameter section immediately outside the drop shaft which also serves as the deaeration chamber and was excavated by SEM. The second phase which is 91 m (300 ft) long and 3 m (10 ft) in diameter was excavated by Micro TBM (MTBM) launched from within the permanently lined deaeration chamber. MTBM excavation commenced toward a reception chamber that was excavated by SEM from the previously bored FST TBM tunnel. This SEM excavation had a 5 m (17 ft) diameter and a length of 4.5 m (15 ft)"

Introduction Guar gum is a natural nonionic polysaccharide. Guaran, the functional polysaccharide in guar gum is a chain of (1?4)-linked ß-D-mannopyranose units with a-D-galactopyranose units connected to the mannose backbone through (1?6) glycosidic linkages. The poly-mannose chain is randomly substituted with galactose units at a mannose-to-galactose ratio of 1.8-1.0 [1]. Cheng et al. reported that the molecular weight of natural guar gum is 1.935 • 106 [2]. Robinson et al. found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105 [3]. Guar gum is frequently used as a depressant of naturally hydrophobic gangue minerals (e.g. talc) in the flotation of PGM-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. a wide variety of modified guar gums are available for this application [4]. The Canadian potash industry utilizes natural guar gum as a blinder of water-insoluble slimes in the flotation of potash (sylvinite) ores, a process that is carried out in a saturated KCl/NaCl brine. The role of the polysaccharide is to prevent a primary amine collector from adsorbing onto these unwanted fine minerals. Hydrophobic interactions between basal cleavage planes and the polymer appear to be involved in guar gum adsorption on talc [5,6]. Liu and Laskowski stressed the importance of metal impurities on mineral surfaces that can serve as the active sites for polysaccharide adsorption [7]. This postulate was consistent with the later observation that, in addition to hydrogen bonding, the adsorption of guar gum onto talc was strongly dependent on the surface concentration of magnesium sites [8,9]. In this case the adsorption process was visualized as metal-polysaccharide complexation facilitated by the cis-configuration of the hydroxyl groups of mannose monomers. Hydrogen bonding and chemical interactions with metal sites were also suggested by Rath and Subramanian in their studies on guar gum adsorption on biotite mica [10]. In a recent study, Wang et al. demonstrated that hydrogen bonding is the main driving force behind guar gum adsorption onto talc [11]. Their data also show that the adsorption density of guar gum on alumina is about five times lower than the adsorption density on talc. Pawlik and Laskowski reported that the amount of guar gum adsorbed on illite was independent of ionic strength over a wide range of salt concentrations [12]. The adsorption density of the polysaccharide on illite did not measurably change with ionic strength from that of distilled water to about 50%-saturated KCl/NaCl potash brine (~3N KCl/NaCl). However, guar gum adsorption on dolomite dramatically decreased over the same range of ionic strengths, and no reliable explanation of that phenomenon was proposed [12]. The water structure-breaking or structure-making capabilities of background ions are usually ignored when discussing adsorption mechanisms of polymers. The concept of “structure breakers” and “structure makers” was first introduced by Gurney, and Frank and Wen who postulated that each ion is surrounded by three distinct regions of water structure [13,14]. In the first layer, water molecules are tightly bound to the ion. The second region extends farther away from the ion and is referred to as the region of structure breaking. Only at larger distances, where the ionic field is weak, water molecules form the “normal” ice-like structure. It is also now recognized that the first layer can be further divided into the primary and secondary hydration shells. Small, strongly hydrated ions reinforce the “normal” structure of water and the region of structure breaking disappears. In contrast, large less-hydrated ions disturb the ice-like structure and generate an extensive region of structure breaking. Experimentally, these two effects can readily be distinguished through viscosity measurements. Increasing concentrations of structure-breaking ions result in a decrease of the viscosity of aqueous solutions. On the other hand, increasing amounts of structure-makers significantly reduce the viscosity of water. Alkali metal cations form a sequence known as the Hofmeister series. A minitest of the new potassium chloride-potassium carbonate two-stage in-situ uranium leach process has been carried out at the Intercontinental Energy Corporation (IEC) Zamzow project site in South Texas. Substantial quantities of high concentration uranium were produced indicating the viability of the leach solution. The test results yield information regarding the reservoir dispersivity, the average cation-exchange capacity of the formation, and the distribution coefficients describing cation-exchange reactions. The test also indicates permeability anisotropy and the existence of disturbed flow fields.

No noticeable international economic recovery occurred during the first half of 1982. Industrial production continued to fall in the United States, Canada and Italy and to hold steady in France. Modest increases in production occurred in Japan, England and Germany, although some decline took place from March to April. The U.S. mining industry has been more severely affected by the world recession than the U.S. economy. This is not immediately obvious when comparing the U.S. mining industrial production index from 1981 to 1982, which decreased 8.5 percent, as compared to a 7.1 percent decline for total domestic industries. However, "mining" industry statistics in the U.S. national economic accounting system include petroleum and natural gas as well as minerals. When metal mining is isolated, the decrease in production from 1981 to 1982 is 19.3 percent. If metal mining production continues to perform at the same rate during the third and fourth quarters of 1982 as during the first half of the year, declines from 1981 levels will be quite severe. Aluminum will have declined 22 percent, copper 18 percent, iron ore 24 percent, lead 3 percent, steel 29 percent, titanium 2 percent and zinc 25 percent.

Although coal is found in several locations in Virginia, almost all recent mining has occurred in the southwestern part of the state. Potentially minable reserves are estimated at 2.6 billion tons, slightly less than one percent of the national total. Coal ranges from high- to low-volatile bituminous, and seams average three to four feet in thickness. Virginia produces coal with higher BTUs (British Thermal Units) and a lower sulfur content than the national average. Historically its high quality has made Virginia coal attractive for metallurgical coke production and for the export market. Coal production and related industries have a significant economic impact in southwestern Virginia. In the seven coal- producing counties, coal mining is the major industry. In the two largest coal-producing counties (Buchanan and Wise), over 40 percent of total earning is derived from the coal industry. Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved December 15,198 1, and received final approval May 8, 1984. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved with the regulatory program December 15, 1981, with emergency program authority approved November 13,1987.

Properly designed evapotranspirative (ET) cover systems can greatly reduce the amount of infiltration and groundwater recharge (deep percolation) into potential acid generating mine waste. In arid and semi-arid environments, infrequent precipitation, low measurable subsurface fluxes, spatial variability within mine waste and cover material, and evapotranspiration from below the cover system create challenges to monitoring moisture flux in these systems. Sloped ET single-layer (monolayer) cover depths and a variety of reclamation treatments are being studied at a copper tailing impoundment in Arizona, USA. To monitor the performance of different ET cover systems in response to precipitation patterns, four different test plots consisting of two different cover depths and two different vegetation densities were instrumented with heat dissipation sensor nests. The sensors measure the soil water pressure potential and allow hydraulic gradients to be determined within and below the cover systems to depths of 180 cm. Three replicate sensor nests were installed in each test plot to account for variability in materials and test plot treatments. Data collection occurs twice daily and is ongoing. Weather during the 26-month monitoring period was characterised by two months of greater than normal precipitation followed by nine months of normal precipitation and 15 months of abnormally dry conditions. Monitoring data indicate that deep percolation occurs in response to periods of extended precipitation, however, drying was observed to depths of six feet below the surface in all test plots. Using conservative assumptions regarding tailing hydraulic properties, one-dimensional downward flux predictions based on the monitoring data indicate very low (Additional long-term monitoring and installation of deeper and replicate monitoring sensors into tailings without cover systems are recommended to evaluate the long-term ET cover system performance and develop a better understanding of deep percolation rates at the sites.

ABSTRACT The pervasiveness of high-fidelity video games raises expectations of quality, detail, and lighting in virtual reality (VR) applications. However, high-quality models of mining equipment and environments are often not readily available, and developers may not be familiar with the latest techniques, such as physically based rendering (PBR). Because a consistent aesthetic is critical for maintaining immersion and controlling visual stimuli in research as well as in training, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) created an asset development workflow. This paper details this workflow, including precision modeling and PBR techniques as well as a rigorous review process. It also describes lessons learned in the creation of photorealistic VR assets. BACKGROUND Virtual reality (VR) describes the simulated experience generated by an assemblage of hardware and software that are used to immerse the user. Over many years VR developers targeted the development of virtual environments (VE) toward various purposes: entertainment, the treatment of phobias [1], rehabilitation [2], and training [3]. A large part of the VE development includes digital assets, where digital assets refer to the non-programmed elements including 3D models, audio, and user interface. Because vision provides nearly 10Mbps of data [4] and accounts for the majority of all sensory input combined [5], a focused effort on asset appearance in VEs is warranted. Furthermore, research has shown that higher-resolution imagery increases search performance and training transfer, necessitating high-fidelity assets [6, 7]. In addition to being visually appealing, it is important that the assets and environment are also dimensionally accurate and consistent in order to elicit appropriate responses from the end users as they interact with and among these items [8, 9]. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed VEs and digital assets under several research projects over the course of the last two decades [10, 11, 12, 13]. This work has provided researchers with a strong knowledge base for digital asset development. However, the assets themselves have had limited reuse value. Due to the extended timeframes and limited scope of these projects, the previously developed assets are not consistent in visual quality and dimensional accuracy. Moving forward, researchers wanted to minimize future development time and use of resources as well as adopt new asset development tools and game engine technology. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to document a new asset development workflow including geometry, materials, UV layout, and shader implementation combined with review steps in order to produce high-fidelity simulation assets that are accurate with consistent characteristics, using repeatable methodologies that are well documented.

The urban environment presents special challenges for the design and construction of earth retention systems. Complications arising from difficult subsurface conditions are compounded by the presence of urban infrastructure and existing and prior construction. The proximity of adjacent structures as well as intense prior use can cause special concerns including the potential for archeological artifacts or contaminated ground or ground water. Utilities and structures may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of ground movement, dewatering and vibrations. Difficulty of access, congestion and limited work areas may severely restrict means and methods of construction. Dewatering may be limited or prohibited because of concerns for disposal of clean or contaminated water, depletion of aquifers, drawing of contaminants to the site or dewatering induced settlements.

The ancient city of Guanajuato, the capital of the State of that name, has been built up and sustained chiefly by the milling industry based upon the veins of the Veta Madre and La Luz. It is distant about twelve hours, by rail, from the City of Mexico. Its elevation above the sea is about 6300 ft., and it has a salubrious climate. The population, at the date of my visit in 1891, was estimated at from 80,000 to 100,000 persons. The place is justly celebrated for the antiquity, depth and extent of the mines, the magnitude of the deep shafts, and the enormous total yield of the district in silver and gold, which is comparable with that of the Comstock Lode in the United States. Several important public institutions are located at this center. The State office for the records of claims and of the statistics of mining and production is known as the Deputacion de Mineria. The Mining College, with its fine collection of ores and minerals from the mines of the region, is highly interesting to mineralogists. A mint for the coinage of silver, but not of gold, coins from four to twelve millions of' silver dollars annually. The silver received at the mint is melted in an open-hearth furnace, and is ladled out and cast into long and thin bars, which are rolled down to the proper thickness for the blanks. The bars contain some gold which is not parted. There is an export of dore bars to Germany, amounting in value to from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 annually. There were, in 1891, upwards of forty reduction-works in and about the city where the silver ores were treated, chiefly by the ancient patio method. In these works were 65 Chilean mills, 301 arrastres of large size, and 936 of smaller dimensions. There were 36 steam engines, but mule-power was generally used at the ar-

The periodic publication of such data enables the pebble-phosphate industry, as well as other industries, to consider relative hazards, compare experience, and thereby help to prevent accidents. THE Birmingham district, Alabama, is distinctive in the proximity to one another of its deposits of iron ore, coal and flux. These three basic requisites for the making of iron and steel are found within a radius of 10 miles. Both dolomite and limestone are produced, the former for blast-furnace flux and the latter for basic open-hearth operations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, operates a limestone mine at Muscoda, near Bessemer, 12 miles southwest of Birmingham, served by its own railroad transportation system. The mine has a capacity of 130 tons per hour. Average analyses of a recent month's production are as follows: Fe2O3 Si02 A12O3 CAC03 MGCO Lump, per cent 0.51 0.22 98.63 0.14 Crushed and washed, percent 0.70 0.26 98.36 0.18 Lump stone, 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 in., is used in open-hearth operations at Fairfield Steel Works. Limestone, including dolomite, is the most widely used of all rocks - nearly 300 million tons annually in the United States alone. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of localities. Because of its attractiveness, substantiality, and durability it is employed extensively as a building stone. In crushed and broken form it is used for concrete aggregate and railroad ballast and in highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, and a host of chemical and industrial processes. This paper proposes to furnish general information on the origin and occurrence of limestone and dolomite, chief production centers, major uses, and methods of quarrying and preparing stone for market.
