The current genesis of pisolites and channel iron deposits (CID) has been defined in a way that presents CID as unique in the world. The published material on detrital pisolites mostly details the West Australian CID; most other global occurrences of iron-rich pisolites would seem to have an in situ genesis. An alternate theory for the origin of the Hamersley CID is suggested, involving an older greensand protore derived from volcanic ash and deposited on a glaciated Hamersley surface. This paper presents the author's observations, sampling and mapping after several years study and exploration for pisolites and CID in WA and in some locations overseas. It is not what one would call scientifically complete, and possibly asks more questions than it answers, but it is presented as a point for discussion.

This report is intended as a reference for personnel interested in the computer anlaysis of coal-mine-electrical-power systems under either normal operating conditions or fault situations. The procedures developed for this purpose are described and implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Considerations for choosing a solution technique and a number of examples are included. Procedures described include the Newton-Raphson iterative technique for the analysis of normal operation as well as a non-iterative Z-bus technique for analysis of unbalanced or balanced faults. During program development, strict attention has been given to the inclusion of core and/or time saving techniques such that these algorithms may be implemented on small as well as large computers. Program languages include FORTRAN IV for batch processing applications and APL or BASIC for interactive applications.

Cancrinite is one eonstituentof "red muds," a high-volume waste product of alumina production by the Bayer process. The Bureau of Mines determined the thermochemical properties of cancrinite as part of a program to provide such data for minerals of industrial importance. Cancrinite [Na7.68(A16Si6024)(N03)1.68 (H2O)4.1] was synthesized by reacting aluminum silicate gel with a solution of NaOH and NaN03, and the composition was determined by chemical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The heat of solution was determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K, ?Hf°298, is ?Hf°298 = -3,487.97 ±2.6 kcal/mol, and the standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides and NaN03, ?H°298, is ?H°298 = -215.20 ±l.8 kcal/mol.

On the night of June 8, 1917, the flame of a carbide lamp accidentally set fire to the uncovered and frayed insulation of an armored power cable near the 2,400-foot level of the North Butte Mining CO.'s Granite Mountain shaft. How this, insulation accidentally became exposed is explained on page 15. The highly flammable oiled fabric set fire to the shaft timbers, and as this is a downcast shaft the fire spread with great rapidity, soon filling the mine workings with smoke and gas. At the time 410 men were working underground, 247 of whom escaped by various means, but most of the 163 remaining were probably overcome soon after the fire started, and perished. Only two men were actually burned. The cause of the disaster was purely accidental. The immediate effect was the unexpected reversal of normal conditions; the ultimate effect was great loss of life and the destruction of the main hoisting shaft, putting it temporarily out of service. The work of rescue and fire fighting continued eight days. The following pages present an attempt to draw some practical conclusions and suggestions from this disaster. The property of the North Butte Mining Co. consists of about 220 acres in the northeastern part of the Butte district, Montana. Next to the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. it is the largest producer of the district. In 1916, the year before the disaster, there were 1,160 men employed. The output was 560,947 tons of ore, which yielded 24,498,181 pounds of copper, 1,047,063 ounces of silver, 1,712 ounces of gold, and 412,953 pounds of zinc. The profit was $2,479,595. The total development work for that year was 21,694 feet. During the first half of 1917, the year of the accident, the daily tonnage of ore averaged 2,000, an increase of 400 tons over that of the year 1916.

Hedges Gold Pty. Ltd. mines and processes a lateritic gold orebody approximately 120 km south east of Perth in the Darling plateau. The operation is approximately 26 km from the town of Boddington and 31 km from the town of Dwellingup. Hedges operates under The Western Australian Environmental Protection Act, Licence Number 3183. Presently, nine Limitations and Conditions are applicable to the tailings dam. These conditions apply to maximum discharge/disposal quantity permitted. Hedges mine is located in state Forest within the eastern, low rainfall section of the Darling Range and within the waler catchment area of the Murray River. Ore is carted by 120 tonne haulpacks to the plant. The plant and tailings dam is on private farm land some six kms from the mine.

Wollongong* is Australia's largest single centre of mining and metallurgy. Wollongong's total employment in manufacturing of basic metal products (over 26,500 in 1972/1973) was almost 50 per cent higher than that of Newcastle and double that of any other Australian city. Although the great bulk of this employment was in steelmaking, Wollongong's copper industry was also a significant employer. Wollongong's total employment in mining (4,900 in 1971) was second only to that of Newcastle among Australian mining centres. Although the bulk of Wollongong's mining is of coal, there is also considerable mining of blue metal, sand and clay. American Electric Power Company (AEP operates 31 coal mines in three states, and some 26 electric generating stations (19 coal-fired) located in the Ohio River Basin. Normally the system burns over 36,071,600 tonnes (40,000,000 tons) of coal and generates in excess of 3.6 X 1018 J (100 billion kwh) of electricity per year. In 1975, AEP, in response to the progressively more stringent air quality requirements of the clean air act, acquired large low-sulfur reserves in Carbon County, Utah (Figure 1. Location Map). Price River Coal Company (PRCC) is the operator OF this multi-seam complex, which is part of the Book Cliffs coalfield at an elevation exceeding 1,829 m (6,000 ft.). The topography is mountainous and divided by numerous canyons. Flat areas are at a premium (Figure 2. Castle Gate Area). Modern high production longwall mining takes in some top and bottom waste, and in this particular operation, it amounts to about 14% of the ROM tonnage.

In the 1953 National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest, 58 teams from 9 States participated, 14 teams from 6 States in mine rescue and 47 teams from 9 States in first aid. Three of the teams were combination teams in that the same team participated in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are shown in table 1. [ ] The contest was conducted in accordance with the general rules prepared by the Rules Committee and approved by the General Committee of the National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Committee.

At the present time, the Florida phosphate industry is experiencing one of the worst marked slumps in its one hundred year history. Recent agriculture over-production has caused low grain prices such that the net income of U.S. farmers is expected to drop to its lowest level since the 1932 depression. The farmers' low income, along with high interest rates that preclude them from borrowing to purchase fertilizer, make the immediate U.S. phosphate market outlook bleek at best. The export outlook is also pessimistic due to world recession and the U.S. dollar's high exchange rate. In June, 26% of the phosphate industry's workers were laid off for an indefinite period of time. Despite the immediate painful slump, the long-term outlook for the industry looks good. Florida has enormous reserves and will continue to produce a third of the world's phosphate supply simply by making changes in the present system of mining, beneficiation, waste disposal and land reclamation.

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, axisymmetric and plane joint, and a three-dimensional joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

[Gypsum is one of the most important nonmetallic c minerals, as is indicated by the fact that the United States consumed approximately 3,500,000 tons of natural and calcined gypsum in 1937. The building trades were the largest users required 2,520,000 tons of calcine for production of plaster, wall board, tiles, block, and various other insulating and building materials. The glass and ceramic industries and other manufacturers required an additional 126,000 tons. During this time, improvements have been made in the design and performance of continuous working-level (CWL) detectors. Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash'and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State's sole producing coalfield.

Auger operations produced 14 million tons of coal in 1974, or approximately 5% of all surface mined coal. It was the most efficient of all coal mining methods, producing 40.0 tons per man-day. Exhibit 1.1 gives a breakdown of productivity of all coal mining methods. However, compared to other methods, the coal recovery rate is relatively low. For example, a triple-headed auger in a 35-inch seam would recover approximately 50% of the coal in the seam as compared to a 90 to 95% recovery rate for strip mining and a 55 to 65% recovery rate for deep-mining. The low auger recovery rate is due to the circular cuts and pillars left in the seam.

Oil and gas development in Mississippi during the year 1933 was rather active and a number of important wildcat wells were drilled throughout the state. Mississippi showed an increase in drilling operations during 1933. There were 58 completions from 22 counties during this period, compared with 53 completions in 10 counties during 1932. The Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties continued to be the most active area with 26 completions, resulting in 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells, and 7 dry holes, compared with 38 gas wells, 1 oil well and 5 dry holes during 1932. A further attempt to extend the producing limits of the Amory gas field resulted in a dry hole. Extensive exploration in south Mississippi has proved the existence of ample source beds and presence of an extensive sandbody near the top of Cockfield. Core tests, supplemented by extensive geophysical work, have been carried on in Jackson, George, Harrison, Pearl River and Stone counties. Exploration will be continued in 1934. The most important deep test drilled in 1933, and the deepest well ever drilled in a southeastern state, was the Eastman Gardner et al., Bank of Seminary No. 1, sec. 26-8N.-15W., Covington County. This well went through about 1300 ft. of Selma chalk, and was abandoned in the Eutaw at 8004 ft. Another interesting operation during the past year was the Foster Creek Oil Corporation's Foster Creek Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 14-2N.-2W., in the "Eastern Conroe Trend." This test is shut down at 3687 ft. in the Catahoula sandstone and has not encountered any important shows of oil or gas. A total of 107 of the 117 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field since its discovery in 1930 are still producing, and have a combined open flow of approximately 3,724,896,000 cu. ft. It is reasonable to assume that this area will be rather inactive during 1934 as the maximum daily production during 1933 was 3,476,000 cu. ft. The 10 wells that have gone dead were edge wells. The water level is now between the sub-sea depths of 2190 and 2195 ft. The Gulf Refining Company's Rainey No. 1, sec. 13-5N.-lE., one of the early wells in the field, had gas and water at —2225 ft. An evaluation of blasting procedures in surface mining operations was undertaken to determine means for improving safety. The objectives of the study were to: 1. Develop guidelines for safer blasting practices 2. Specify changes or additions in regulations concerning the use of explosives 3. Identify areas in which additional knowledge needs to be developed. As a basis for the evaluation, an idealized blasting cycle was prepared. Developed in the form of a scenario of surface mining operations, this synthesis of good mining practices served as the standard against which observed activities were compared. Blasting hazards were divided into two categories: those known to exist and those which are potential. Known hazards were identified in terms of situations which have actually resulted in explosives-related accidents. The evidence for known hazards was obtained primarily from MESA records of mine accidents. Potential hazards were identified by observation of mining activities and consultations with mining, explosive industry and government regulatory agency personnel.

A Flyrock Prevention Taskforce was established in Kentucky with the support of Kentucky's Department of Natural Resources, Kentucky's Explosives Industry, and the University of Kentucky. This paper presents the initial work of the Flyrock Prevention Taskforce towards its missions of identifying the root causes of flyrock incidents based on the analysis of previous events, and tracking the progress of flyrock elimination in the future. Work identifying root causes of flyrock events is presented through the development of a database which manages information about the blasts which caused flyrock. This data includes: blasting and seismograph records, drill logs, videos of the event when available, company notes/incident reports, and any additional information regarding probable cause. Work tracking the progression of flyrock elimination efforts is presented in this paper through the introduction of a flyrock index. Several metrics are proposed for this index, and are discussed for their appropriateness and shortcomings. In order for these indexes to be valid forms of tracking flyrock incident rates additional records must be kept and reported, such as the annual consumption of explosives by surface coal blasting. Suggestions for record keeping, flyrock investigation practices, and means of tracking flyrock incident rates are proposed in this paper.
