Fieldwork in the Meguma of Nova Scotia and Archean equivalents shows that bedding-parallel quartz lode gold veins (LVs) commonly occur at the top of graded elastic sequences. We define a "gold cycle" (GC) by analogy with Bouma turbidites and show that most "shear zones" and "lamprophyres" correspond to the upper pelagic-pelitic (E) division. We describe GCs from Archean Chester Twp, ON; Elmhirst, ON; Bourlamaque, QC; "intrusions" and interpret them as crystal tuffs and tuff-breccias. Extensive early Archean pyroclastic volcanism is implied: the genesis of trondjhemite-tonalite-granodiorite (TTG) rocks must be re-examined. The geopetal nature and asymmetric alteration of LVs indicates genesis from sea-floor hydrothermal vents. Textures suggest that often quartz was deposited as a gel. Vent geometry (fracture, point source or diffuse seep), bottom topography and vent spacing is reflected in wade-thickness plots. GC facing directions survive metamorphism. The Bourlamaque batholith was a flat-lying sheet of quartz-feldspar-hornblende crystal tuff, and isoclinal folding has repeated one or more gold-bearing horizons. Syngenesis clarifies and simplifies LV formation with major implications for models. Exploration becomes more cost-effective. Basin analysis, whole rock geochemistry, ore lens geometry and vent spacing can be used.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Over the last decade (2005–2014), a total of 439 significant deposits of gold and base metals were found in the world. Twenty (or 4.6 per cent) of these deposits were in the Pacific/South-East Asia (Pacific/SE Asia) region. In terms of contained metal, the region accounted for 1.6 per cent of gold and 13.8 per cent of copper found in the world. With regard to nickel and zinc/lead, the region’s contributions were insignificant.Over the same period, the Pacific/SE Asia region accounted for 6.6 per cent and 12.6 per cent of all gold and copper exploration expenditures in the world respectively. After adjusting for by-product credits, unreported discoveries and likely growth in resource, the unit discovery cost for the region was US$199/oz (compared to a world average of US$50/oz). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$55/oz and US$25/oz respectively. The region’s unit discovery cost for copper was US$0.036/lb (versus a world average of US$0.040). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$0.026/lb and US$0.008/lb Cu respectively.The region’s mediocre discovery performance doesn’t reflect its distribution of known mineralisation. Some countries within the region have a very good endowment per square kilometre.It is noted that the intensity of exploration (and resulting success) would be boosted if governments provided a more mining- and investment-friendly business environment and generated better precompetitive geological data sets (to identify new exploration targets and boost the country’s perceived mineral prospectivity). A multivariable regression analysis of a decade of data from the Fraser Institute’s mining company surveys found that a ten point increase in the Policy Perception Index or a 0.1 point increase in the Mineral Potential Index could boost (in the short term) exploration expenditures by 1.9 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively. The resulting economic benefits of an expanded mining sector would be significant. The same story applies elsewhere in the world.CITATION:Schodde, R C, 2015. MINExpo INTERNATIONL 2000 was a good place for companies to introduce new products, technologies and services to the mining industry. Caterpillar took that a step further. The company hosted a one-day preview of its mining products at its Tinaja Hills Training and Demonstration Center near Tucson, AZ. About 30 members of the trade press spent the day at Tinaja Hills before heading on to Las Vegas for MINExpo INTERNATIONAL 2000. Dozens of Caterpillar professionals provided the editors with a first-hand look at Caterpillar’s mining trucks, loaders, excavators, road graders, water trucks and engines. In addition, these Cat experts explained the intricacies of each piece of equipment, the latest technology that led their improvement and their value to the company’s mining customers.

Over the past several decades, cement-based grouts using ultrafine cement as are placement for portland cement have begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts, however the amount of information currently available on these grouts is limited. For this reason, the authors developed a field testing program to evaluate the penetration capabilities of various ultrafine cement grout mixes. The tests were conducted by injecting sand columns using different portland and ultrafine based grouts, the measuring penetration distances after applying equal injection pressure for the same time period. Results of tests performed in 1999 and 2000 are discussed herein.

Stable Nitroxyl polymers, such as poly (2,2,6,6-tetramenthyl-1-piperidinyloxy-4-yl methacrylate) (PTMA), are known to be effective as cathode active materials for lithium rechargeable betteries.The nitroxide radicals displayed a reversible and very rapid redox performances.We present a new synthesized method to get PTMA powder, then a doctor-blading method was used to prepare the PTMA composite electrodes, enabling successful production of homogeneous electrodes. It was characterized through FT-IR and SEM methods.The organic radical battery consists of lithium metal anode and PTMA cathode with an active material content of 65wt%.The best performance is achieved with a thin cathode that shows nearly 100% utilization of the active material (111mAh/g) at 0.1C.Through the electrochemical tests, it was found that there was a stable plateau at 3.5V while discharging. Besides, the cycling stability and rate capability were measured in detail. Although they showed a certain quantity of irreversible capacity on the first cycle, the capacity stabilized after the second cycle.

Detailed knowledge of velocity-depth trends is essential for constructing well-to seismic ties, determining background velocity and generating synthetic seismic traces for interpreting seismic amplitudes in terms of porosity, lithology and pore fluid type. The acoustic properties of shales are of particular importance in the exploration setting as shales constitute more than 80% of sediments and rocks in siliclastic environments. Seismic and sonic log data may be used for estimating overpressure in shales in order to maintain borehole stability during drilling. In addition, velocities in shales can be used for predicting its mechanical properties and hence, borehole collapse. Despite of the apparent importance of understanding shale acoustics, sonic logs in shales are frequently unavailable or unreliable especially for older wells. Hence, it is essential to compute pseudo-velocity logs from other available information. This can be accomplished by using empirical relationships or rock physics transforms. In this study we have compared the predictive power of resistivity (Faust 1951, Hubert 2008) and porosity based models (Wyllie 1956, Holt & Fjær 2003) for computing synthetic P-wave velocity logs using wireline log data from mudstone intervals at three North Sea wells. The wells 6507/2-1, 6507/2-2 and 6507/2-1 are located at the Haltenbanken area at the Norwegian Sea. The wells targeted hydrocarbon potential at the upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary sandstone sequences. The sandstone beds are overlain by thick Tertiary and Cretaceous sequences of mudstones. Since our primary goal is to model acoustic velocities in shale, we used wireline data from the Nordland (NL), Rogaland (RL) and Hordaland (HL) groups that are mainly composed of mudstone. The mudstone beds were identified from the well log data by using natural gamma log, sonic and resistivity data as well as information from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate website. The volume of shale was estimated from the natural gamma log and the data points with values higher than 0.65 were discarded. Similarly, the data points with shale volume less than 40 % were discarded. Furthermore, exceptionally high resistivity values amounting to more than 6 Ohm m were not included in the analysis. Porosities were determined from the density log assuming 2.7 and 1.05 g/cm3 for matrix and fluid densities, respectively. The depth that was used for calculating Vp from Faust (1953) was the depth below mudline in order to the compare of well data from wells that have been drilled at different depths (Hubert 2008).

At Renlou Coal Mine, Huaibei Mine Area, the track entry deformed significantly after longwall mining in an overlying multiple seams. The supporting characteristics of primary roof bolts and shotcrete with wire mesh are closely related to the movement of the mine?s surrounding strata. A case study of a track entry deformation was monitored during the longwall mining of a selected overlying panel. The measured data showed the unique entry deformation pattern during the longwall mining in the overlying seam. Underground extensometer measurement showed that entry stability was mainly affected by the periodic roof weighting of longwall mining in the overlying seam. The displacement of the deeper strata occurred a head of the immediate vicinity of the entry. Thereafter, deformation of the roof and floor strata was in the form of shearing of the shallower strata. Due to the use of heavy-duty roof bolting with wire-mesh, the roof-tofloor and rib-to-rib convergences were small, but the floor heave was large, greater than 80% of the roof-to-floor convergence. The measured displacement from extensometers varied with the position of the monitored cross-sections and depth into the roof. There were several deformation patterns, such as shearing movement, compression, and expansion, and the variations between compression and expansion. Strata compression at the entry surface was always accompanied with shearing movement at the deeper strata. During the longwall mining, the whole surrounding strata of the entry moved toward the opening. Underground practical experience indicated that prior to mining, the entry was supported very well in excellent conditions. After mining, however, it deformed greatly. The current entry support technology was not effectively control the severe deformation incurred in entries driven in soft strata due to the following reasons: (1) little is known about the entry deformation behavior of the strata surrounding the opening and (2) the degree of interactions between entry deformation and roof bolting with wire mesh is not well understood. Consequently, effective supporting systems cannot be properly selected to control its deformation and maintain a stable supported surrounding structure.

This paper deals with the influence from blast induced stress waves on the performance of shotcrete support in the Kiirunavaara mine. Time histories of stress waves from blasting were obtained from measurements during production blasts in the mine, followed by failure mapping. A finite element model, consisting of beam and spring elements, was used to calculate the shotcrete response to vibrations from blasting. The modelling approach was similar to that of a building during an earthquake, with accelerations measured in-situ used as loads. The analysis showed that the calculated adhesive stresses exceeded the strength in the interface between rock and shotcrete near to the blasted ring. It also indicated that tensile rock failure did occur. These types of failure will presumably result in ejection of joint defined rock blocks or rock slabs and will require a ductile support, such as fibre reinforced shotcrete. The predicted failure was confirmed by the mapping, which also showed that the zone of failed shotcrete was much larger in areas with plain shotcrete compared to areas with reinforced shotcrete. L’influence de l’onde de pression générée par les sautages à la mine de fer de Kiruna sur la performance du béton projeté est étudiée dans le présent article. Les ondes créées par les sautages ont été enregistrées et les domages résultants ont été cartographiés. La réponse du béton projeté aux vibrations de sautage est étudiée à l’aide d’un modèle d’éléments finis, constitué de poutres et de ressorts. L’approche est similaire à celle d’un immeuble subissant un tremblement de terre, avec les accélérations internes utilisées comme charges. L’analyse montre qu’à proximité des sautages, la contrainte adhésive dépasse la résistance de l’interface roche-béton. L’analyse confirme aussi l’existence de ruptures en tension. Ces types de rupture induisent probablement l’éjection des blocks définis par les structures du massif rocheux et requierent un support ductil, comme du béton projeté renforcé par exemple. Le type de rupture est confirmé par les observations de terrain, qui montrent aussi une extension plus importante des domages lorsque le béton projeté n’est pas renforcé. In diesem Konferenzbeitrag geht es um den Einfluss, der aus einer Sprengung hervorgerufenen Schwingungswellen auf die Ausführung der Spritzbetonverstärkung in dem Kiirunavaara Bergwerk. Die Aufzeichnungen der Schwingungswellen von Sprengungen gemäß einer Fehlerkartierung beziehen sich auf Messungen, die während der Sprengungen durchgeführt wurden. Ein Finite Elemente Modell, bestehend aus Stab- und Federelementen, wurde für die Berechnung der Spritzbetondeformation in Bezug auf die Schwingungen aus Sprengungen angewendet. Die Modellierungsmethode war ähnlich der eines Gebäudes während eines Erdbebens anhand der gemessenen Beschleunigungen vor Ort, die als Lasten benutzt wurden. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die berechnete Haftspannung größer war als die Festigkeit in der Verbindung zwischen Gestein und Spritzbeton in der Nähe des Sprengungscentrums. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass die Zugfestigkeit des Gesteins versagte. Diese Arten von Versagen werden als Folge der Herausnahme von Gesteinsbrocken oder Gesteinsplatten erklärt und benötigen eine faserverstärkte Spritzbeton. Das vorausgesagte Versagen bestätigte sich beim Kartieren, welches auch zeigte, dass die Zone des versagenden Spritzbetons in Bereichen mit unverstärktem Spritzbeton viel größer war als in Bereichen mit armierten Spritzbeton.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 177,000-acre Secesh study area; most of the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel mapped and sampled several hundred mine and prospect workings; 1,715 rock, soil, and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 mi east-northeast of McCall, Idaho, in the Payette National Forest. Five mining districts extend into or are adjacent to the study area. There have been more than 3,000 mining claims located inside the study area, 884 are current. In excess of $17 million (historical value) in placer and lode gold has reportedly been produced from the Warren district alone. The study area contains gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, and antimony. At least six properties that would be in the proposed wilderness contain gold resources; more than 18 million tons averaging 0.038 oz/ton gold have been identified. Additional resources may be located at 4 other localities. The 4th of July mine is currently producing gold/silver/lead ore. Similar resources may be located on at least 3 other properties. Placer samples from the study area contained up to 0.34 oz gold/yd3 ($120/yd3). The samples are representative of relatively small occurrences and do not constitute resources; small quantities of gold may be recovered by recreational placer miners.

The key to the successful debt funding of a new mining project, whether in economically established or developing nations, is the submission of a comprehensive feasibility study. The feasibility study forms the basis from which the resource banker can construct financial models which govern the amount of available funds, the conditions which control the supply of such funds and the time period over which the loan may be repaid. The bank will wish to ensure that the feasibility study is the best representation and confirmation of reality possible because this model is the basis of the loan security package. Thus the study will be vigorously interrogated by independent experts in all its elements including the ore reserve, mineability, metallurgy, operating and capital cost profile, environmental factors and management. A well constructed feasibility study, undertaken by well recognised and respected independent consultants can save the client company a great deal of real and opportunity costs especially in relation to project timing. Once constructed and operating, the mining project may face one or more completion tests in relation to the loans provided. The genetics of such tests often relate to either the ability of the operating company to become solely responsible for the repayment of the loan or to be rewarded by lower interest rates or some other mechanism. Strong professionalism, accessible records, good checking procedures and high quality, competent site management will greatly assist the client company passing these tests. A record of well established technical competence with its bankers may well assist a company in the establishment of a mezzanine loan for the early development of its next project, thus allowing an earlier return of dividends to shareholders.

Electronic detonators are increasingly being used in today’s blasting in quarries, seismic, surface and underground mines. Electronic detonators offer several distinctive features over electric and non-el (shock tube) detonators including better timing accuracy resulting in excellent fragmentation and vibration control, field programmability and digital safety means. Because of the prerequisite electrical communications between the electronic detonators and the blasting machine, the layout or hook-up of these detonators can play an important role in obtaining the communication fidelity.

Silicon metal as a commodity material is produced by carbothermic reduction of quartz in electric submerged arc furnaces, where CO2 forms as a by-product. Since 1997 the Norwegian Ferroalloy Producers Association have been engaged in research programmes aiming for reduced CO2-emissions associated with fossil carbon in their processes. One important issue has been to study how charcoal and wood chips perform compared to coal and coke in the silicon process. The ability of the carbon-rich reduction materials to react with SiO-gas is commonly assumed to be of large importance to the performance of the process. Based on laboratory experiments with different carbon materials, combined with estimation of parameters in a mathematical model of the reaction between carbon and SiO-gas, a foundation for a theoretical study of the performance of the carbon materials in a silicon furnace is established.

Cyanide leaching of two West African gold ores was studied in multiple laboratories to provide process-engineering data for plant design purposes. Unusually slow leach extraction kinetics were observed using routine cyanide leach test procedures with pregnant solution monitoring. Carbon-in-leach testing, however, showed normal rapid kinetic behavior, with the same ultimate gold extractions being reached in much shorter elapsed times. Kinetic curves based on washed solids assays also exhibited more typical leaching characteristics. The results bore all the hallmarks of some equilibrium inhibition of the leaching. It was surmised that ore gangue components were responsible for weakly adsorbing gold-cyanide complex reaction product, thereby holding up soluble gold in the solid phase. The term ?preg-borrowing? was coined to describe the reversible phenomenon and distinguish it from irreversible preg-robbing. The two ores investigated may represent an extreme form of a more general effect that in most instances might pass unnoticed. The effect can lead to misinterpretation of kinetic leach curve data and underestimation of calculated ore head grades.

Many accidents occur in the mining industry as a result of the instability of material during handling and processing operations. Accidents due to dump point instability at stockpiles, and at spoil or waste piles, for example, occur with alarming frequency. Miners must be trained to be better aware of these hazards. Information on safe working procedures at stockpiles and surge piles is provided. Mine operators must review their training and operating procedures regularly to ensure that hazardous conditions are avoided.

The Royal Canadian Mint has implemented significant process additions since 2005. Installation of a whole new highly automated silver refining circuit has allowed recovery of physical silver from gold and silver dorés . To complement this change, a small Top Blown Rotary Converter has been in operation. On the gold refining side, a new hydrometallurgical process to recover precious metals from Miller Chlorination slag has been developed. Finally, new systems have been put in place to improve treatment of waste water, wet and dry fume and dust.

HOWARD H. PRESTON, professor of economics and business at the University of Washington, presented a paper before the North Pacific Section, A.I.M.E., on Jan. 23, on the "Economic Aspects of Gold and Silver." He carefully reviewed recent governmental actions that have affected those metals and gave an interpretation of their effects. A brief excerpt from his address; follows: Including the proclamation of March 6, 1933, the principal steps of the present Administration which have carried the United States off the gold standard and led up to the present program have been: (1) The Presidential proclamation of March 6 controlling gold. (2) The monetary sections of the Emergency Banking Act of March 9. (3) Mobilization of gold under Executive orders issued March 10 and April 5. (4) The gold embargo by Executive order, April 20. "In 2013, Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) piles are a mature foundation technology throughout the United States. General guidelines for the design and construction of ACIP piles are available along with numerous references for design in specific North American geologies. In fact, the current generation of contractors and geotechnical practitioners might view ACIP piles as just another deep foundation option to be considered, along with driven piles, drilled shafts and others. This acceptance has developed, however, over a 60-plus year period.The term, Augered Pressure-Grouted (APG) pile is often used when referring to ACIP piles because the piles emerged out of construction processes at the Intrusion-Prepakt firm in the late 1940s. The company’s specialty was pressure grouting and preplaced aggregate concrete. The grouting was typically accomplished by driving a pipe to a target level and then injecting grout under pressure. In some soil conditions, it was necessary to use an auger to reach the desired grouting depth. In these circumstances, the grout pipe was driven beside the auger and grout was pumped as the auger was withdrawn. The grout pipe was then withdrawn as well. This was the genesis of the APG, or ACIP pile, and many piles were installed using this technique. The patent application, “Method for Forming Piles” was filed by Raymond Patterson of Intrusion-Prepakt in 1951, and the patent was granted in 1956. The process was eventually modified when a suitable hollow-stem auger was developed. Licenses were granted to the Lee Turzillo Contracting Company and Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. in the late 1950s. Each of the three companies Patent, LicensesThe patent application, “Method for Forming Piles” was filed by Raymond Patterson of Intrusion-Prepakt in 1951, and the patent was granted in 1956. The process was eventually modified when a suitable hollow-stem auger was developed. Each of the three companies coined their own terms for the piling process: “Pakt-In-Place” for Intrusion-Prepakt, “Auger Pressure-Grouted” for Berkel and “Augercast” for Turzillo. Over time, “Augercast” was frequently used as a generic term for the system. The installation of these piles was, and still is, a highly nuanced process; “contractor dependent” is a term often seen today. Intrusion-Prepakt, Berkel and Turzillo all had personnel who were part of the original group that developed the system and who appreciated the craftsmanship involved in forming sound piles."

A summary of a proposal to develop a 20 000 tpa underground gold operation in a Forest Park. The environmental constraints are severe and affected the mine development planning and choice of mining method. The mine will use trackless methods to access the narrow 1.5 m ore shoots, and to mine ore by cut and fill methods. The use of Microscoop and CT 1700 HE electric LHDs for mucking, together with special drilling attachments for drilling, is central to efficiency and small Kubota diesel haulers will be used for carrying ore to surface.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1979, 12 companies operated 32 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 64% of production. Washington, Oregon and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States 20%; other Northern States 32%; and other Southern States 16%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1979 was valued at over $6 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1979, building accounted for about 24%; packaging 23%; transportation 22%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 8%; and other uses, 12%.

Aspects of blast vibrations, damage mechanisms and the influence of rock quality on damage severity are reviewed and results presented from a monitoring programme in which the rock mass rating for six tunnels was determined. The peak particle velocity induced in the tunnels during open-pit blasting was measured and the tunnels were inspected visually for fresh damage after each blast. The results suggest that the quality of rock in which an excavation is situated has an influence on the level of ground vibration to which it can be subjected without sustaining damage. This means that the use of a single limiting value of peak particle velocity, as in the blast damage criteria for residential structures, is not ideal and may result in damage to excavations in poorer-quality rock masses
