Because of the increasing use of zinc as an active and passive anticorrosion agent for steel, leading to constantly growing return rates of galvanized steel components, especially through the automotive industry, major Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) flue dust amounts with higher zinc contents will accumulate in future. Landfilling of steel plant flue dusts is no longer allowable for ecological reasons. These dusts are classified as hazardous by law. Waelz technology is safe and reliable. The range .of treatable feed materials has been extended by process modifications and state-of-the-art offgas technology. Waelz oxide, the product, is delivered to metal smelters for zinc production and the byproduct, Waelz slag, can be used in road construction. Despite the fact that Waelz technology is among the best available techniques (BAT), it is continuously being optimized further with respect to energy input, product and offgas quality in order to comply with the ever more stringent environmental regulations. However, if these flue-dusts are treated, the loops between the steel and the zinc industry can be closed by reusing recovered zinc which in tum leads to savings in natural resources and a more reasonable use of landfills.

A new hydrometallurgical process for the production of refined gold and the recovery of palladium and platinum from silver anode slimes has recently been developed and installed at the, CCR Division of Noranda Inc. The process, which facilitates the production of gold of >99.99% purity in the face of increasing palladium receipts comprises; leaching silver anode slimes with hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide at 95°C to solubilize gold, palladium, platinum and base metals while simultaneously rejecting silver as insoluble silver chloride; precipitating gold from the leach solu¬tion with sulphur dioxide gas in two stages to produce a first-stage high purity gold product and a second stage impure gold which is recycled to the leach; washing, melting and casting of the pure gold; precipitation of a palladium-platinum concentrate from the gold-free solution by reduction with sodium formate at pH 4 and 95°C; and neutralization of the palladium precipitation effluent to pH 10 with lime. The results of laboratory and pilot plant studies leading to the adop¬tion of this process are discussed, and data are presented for each of the unit operations. Details of the engineering of the commercial plant are given, and plant start-up experience is described.

Closed chamber incineration (CCI) is a novel technique by which irradiated nuclear graphite may be destroyed without the risk of radioactive cation release into the environment. The process utilizes an enclosed combustion chamber coupled with molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs). The transport of cations is intrinsically suppressed by the MCFCs, such that only the combustion gases are conducted through for release to the environment. An example CCI design was developed which had as its goal the destruction of graphite fuel elements from the Fort St. Vrain reactor (FSVR). By employing CCI, the volume of high level waste from the FSVR will be reduced by approximately 87 percent. Additionally, the incineration process will convert the Sic coating on the FSVR fuel particles to SiO2, thus creating a form potentially suitable for direct incorporation in a vitrification process stream. The design is compact, efficient, and makes use of currently available technology.

Production of ultrafine gram microstructures in metals and alloys having different crystal structures but always an initially coarse microstructure using severe plastic deformation can significantly enhance the physical and mechanical properties of materials. Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) is an efficient method to induce ultra fine grained structure in materials by deforming it to large strains. Traditional techniques for introducing deformation of higher strains, such as forging, extrusion, drawing or rolling do have the inevitable limitation on required equipments of exerting enough load or pressure to cause uniform nanometer level grain refinement."

Increased Cu grades due to chalcopyrite-rich ore from The Doe Run Company's new Casteel Mine prompted a program to increase Cu recovery. Preliminary tests indicated that prohibitive quantities of FeS2 float with chalcopyrite. Point counting of mill stream samples showed that locking was not a major problem, although grinding to finer particle size enhanced the floatability of both chalcopyrite and marcasite. Backscattered electron images and microprobe analyses of FeSz minerals revealed the presence of Pb which appears to occur as solid solution in marcasite, and as a sub-micron particulate Pb phase in pyrite.

The steelmaking process requires the input of ferro-alloys to implement the adjustment of some elements composition in the final product. In the particular case of stainless steel production, the high carbon FeCr alloy stands out as one important precursor. However in the production of this material a certain quantity of fine powder with remarkable chromium and carbon content is also generated, which, in turn, could be processed through alkaline roasting in order to selectively recovery this element in a subsequent aqueous route. In the present work, this process is investigated, using excess of NaOH as oxidizing agent, and H2O2 for precipitating chromium as Cr(OH)3, which is next calcinated to Cr2O3. According to the results, the global achieved recovery has shown to be around 98%, suggesting that the proposed route can be seen as a potential process for chromium oxide production from the mentioned fine powder.

"In the preset work, the viscosity model (named modified KTH model) proposed by Sichen Du and S. Seetharaman et al and extended by Shu Qi-feng was applied to the ESR slag systems. A correlation to predict the viscosities of CaF 2-(CaO)-Al203 slags using interaction coefficients of different cations in the presence of oz-and viscosity interaction coefficients between oz-and F in the presence of different cations has been developed. The interaction coefficient between oz- and F- in the presence of Al3+ was determined from the experimental data as shown in known literatures. The good agreement between the calculated viscosities and the experimental data in the CaF2-(CaO)-Al203 systems has indicated that this approach can be successfully employed to predict the viscosities of ESR slags.IntroductionReliable viscosities data of high-temperature slag melts are important for the modeling and design of high temperature metallurgical processes. Although a number of experimental measurements have been carried out, the available viscosities data is still scarce compared to the needs of today's technology, especially in the case of complex melts. In process simulations, the needs of viscosity descriptions for complex systems which could enable the extrapolation of the data as functions of temperature and composition is strongly felt today."

"Tamano Smelter or Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co. Ltd. is operating with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace method which is a flash smelting furnace without slag cleaning furnace but which can discharge a slag equivalent to that from the slag cleaning furnace and with the development or coke combustion technology which is the basis of this world's only one type flash smelting furnace process, the smelter exhibits a low operation cost under high productivity operation. Utilizing this experience and improving it we have developed and put to practice an operation guide system using a general purpose computer in order to further establish s stable operation. In this paper these improvements are described. Background of System DevelopmentWith the recent rapid progress of general purpose computers and improvements in their performance an environment for the use or computer in process simulation at low cost and simple operation has been established. If an accurate operation simulation can be done with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace the merits would be very great and thus we started development of the system. The official name of this system is Computer guide system for Coke Combustion in the T-FSF and taking the initial letters we call it CCCT. We aim to achieve operation with stable mane grade, temperature and slag loss in the furnace by maintaining the most suitable combustion conditions of concentrate and coke in the flash furnace with the assistance of CCCT to the flash smelting furnace operators.Through several production expansion projects clone in the past by oxygen enrichment the copper concentrate treatment quantity and matte grade have increased step by step as shown in Figure I. Following this increase the difference between the operation calculation results al the initial stage of coke combustion and the actual behavior of furnace (matte grade. temperature in the furnace. etc.) gradually became bigger. Further operation procedures taken by different operators against the same phenomenon were sometimes different depending on each individual, which from time to time caused the operation to become unstable. Prior to the development of the system we checked out thoroughly the weak points of operation calculation procedures which were in practice until that time. The results were analyzed and study was carried out to establish a most suitahle operation calculation procedure and finally we reached this system"

"Extracting boric acid from saline brine by boron specific ion-exchange resin was investigated. Effects of resin amount, temperature, time and stirring speed on boron adsorption rate were studied in the experiments. The results indicated that the XSC-700 resin showed excellent boron absorbability and it performed better property for elution. The maximum boron adsorption capacity was 6.16 mg/ml in the optimum conditions: the resin concentration of 5 ml/(100 ml brine), the temperature of 60°C, the time of 5-6h and the stirring speed of 100 r/min. Boron was eluted from the resin with HCl and boric acid was crystallized by evaporating the eluate. The product of boric acid was in pure form as confirmed by XRD and other analysis techniques.1 IntroductionBoron has a number of minerals in nature such as tincal, colemanite, ulexite, and kemite, etc. [1-2]. Boron and its compounds are chemical materials of significant value. The principal industrial uses of boron compounds are in the production of glass, porcelain, enamels and detergents. Other uses include fertilizers, metallurgy, and nuclear shielding [3-4]. In recent years, because of the large-scale mining boron ore, ore resources are drained gradually. With the development of science and technology, the boron mineral resources will be unsatisfied with the future requirement. There exits abundant boron resources in salt lakes which cover about 40% of the total reserves in China. If we can obtain boron from salt lakes, it will produce great economic interests [5-6]. Therefore, actively seeking boron from salt lake and other resources in suitable conditions has become a hot spot in the research organizations of boron resources development and utilization in the world [7].There are many methods such as acid crystallization, solvent extraction and ion exchange processes suggested effective for boron extraction from aqueous solutions. Acid crystallization method has the shortcomings of complicated procedures, the pollution caused by hydrochloric and other ingredients returning to salt lakes during the extraction process. "The TiO2-rich slag and pig iron can be produced from ilmenite concentrate by the electric furnace process. In this study, ilmenite concentrate was reduced in a vertical furnace equipped with a weighting data acquisition system. The effects of reducing agent (carbon) amount on the iron reduction were studied. The phase transformation, morphology and chemical compositions of reduced samples were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. It was found that the reductive degree of ilmenite concentrate increased with the increase of reducing time. The phases of reduced samples were mostly iron, rutile, Ti3O5 and Fe2TiO5. The mass loss percentage increased with increasing the carbon amount from 8% to 12%. When the carbon amount exceeded 12%, the mass loss percentage decreased with the increasing of carbon amount.IntroductionIlmenite and rutile are the main raw materials for producing titania pigment and titanium metal. With the development of the titanium industry, huge amounts of titanium resources are needed. As sources of high-grade titania mineral decrease worldwide, more attention should be paid to the processes involving low grade mineral such as ilmenite ore. In ilmenite, MgO and CaO are the gangue parts. Therefore, the ilmenite refining becomes more and more popular. In the previous studies, the methods of ilmenite refining are electric furnace smelting, direct acid leaching, selective chlorination and thermal reduction [1]. Electric furnace smelting method is widely used in the titanium industry, however, which consumes a great deal of energies and has a high CO2 emission. Its essence is to remove iron oxides and obtain a high titania slag. So the thermal reduction of ilmenite concentrate is an important step in titanium industry, which can decrease carbon reagent consumption and save energy.Over the past several decades, many studies have been carried out on the mechanism and kinetics of the reduction of different ilmenite ores, which are as follows: The carbothermal reduction of Panzhihua ilmenite initiated at about 860 oC. In the temperatures ranging from 900 oC to 1400 oC, the reaction rate was changed like a shape of “M”. That was to say that the reaction rate increased with the growth of temperature at first, then decreased, afterward increased again and at last the reaction was arrested [2]. The Mohammad A.R group [3, 4] showed that the carbothermal reduction of primary ilmenite concentrate was faster in hydrogen and initiated at a lower reduced temperature than in argon and helium. The reduction in argon and helium had about the same rate and extent. Titanium oxycarbide started at 1000°C in hydrogen. The conversion of primary ilmenite concentrate to metallic iron and titanium oxycarbide at 1200 °C was completed in 300 minutes. Monoxide as the reductant to reduce ilmenite had been studied intensively by a few research groups [5, 6]. The rate and the degree of reduction depended on the formation of a metallic shell of iron which inhibited the transfer of CO to the reaction zones; titanium had a strong effect on the mechanism and rate of reduction of iron oxides. Wang and Yuan [7] studied the reductive kinetics of the reaction between a natural ilmenite and carbon. At temperature below 1100°C, chemical reaction was the rate controlling step, at 1100 to 1250°C mixed controlling was rate controlling step, above 1250°C diffusion through the product layer controlled the reaction. Zhang [8] investigated the reduction of natural, sintered and preoxidized ilmenite concentrates in hydrogen methane mixtures. Preoxidation and sintering of ilmenite concentrates changed their phase composition and caused a sharp decrease in specific surface area of raw materials and an increase in carburization temperature. Sintering also increased the metallization temperature of iron."

Polymer matrix composites have been applied in components such as helmets and shielding for which toughness is a major requirement. Natural fiber presents interfacial characteristics with polymeric matrices that favor a high impact energy absorption by the composite structure. The objective of this work was then to assess the Izod impact resistance of polymeric composites reinforced with different amounts, up to 30% in volume, of a promising high strength natural fiber from the Amazon region known as curaua. The results showed a remarkable increase in the notch toughness with the amount of incorporated curaua fibers. This can be attributed to a preferential debonding of the fiber/matrix interface, which contributes to an elevated absorbed energy.

"In this paper, the methods of life cycle assessment for microwave hot air systems, and the concept of green degree were proposed. Greenness evaluation index, evaluation system and evaluation model of microwave hot air systems were established. Also, life cycle assessment processing based on these ideas was introduced. Analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy decision- making method were utilized to establish and solve the greenness evaluation of assessment model, while the scores of green degree in microwave hot air systems were obtained. The results show that Life cycle assessment can be applied effectively and efficiently to the microwave hot air systems.IntroductionHot air systems are an important industrial operation condition, which is used to provide high temperature air for materials processing. Nowadays, high temperature airs are manufactured by the conventional heating processes, in which some ceramic materials are used as heating materials. However, these processes pollute the environment. Therefore, to explore new method to produce high temperature air with low energy consumption and less environment pollution are necessary.Microwaves are now being used in various technological and scientific fields in order to heat dielectric materials [1]. Microwaves irradiation has been explored in materials processing in recent years [2-3]. The main advantage of using microwave heating is that the treatment time can be considerably reduced, which in many cases represents a reduction in the energy consumption as well. Since there is energy absorption but no heat conduction, the heating is very rapid and highly efficient, resulting in energy savings and the shortened processing time [2, 4]. Compared with conventional heating techniques, the additional advantage of using microwave irradiation is that microwave irradiation achieves both internal and uniform heating [5-7]. In addition, it is more convenient to control the microwave irradiation processing, because of no direct contact between the heating source and heated materials with less equipment size and waste [2, 8-9]. Life cycle assessment is used and accepted methods for the evaluation of the environmental impacts of products or systems [10]. Recently, many appropriate evaluation methods have been developed for life cycle assessment [11-12]. These proposed methods usually are employed for the evaluating product and analyzing results [13]. Among them, the analytic hierarchy process and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation stand out as a popular method utilized in many fields [14-16]. Analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation are a combination of mathematical and statistical technique that is useful for analyzing the effects of several independent assessment aspects on the system goal without the need of the predetermined relationship between the objective function and the assessment aspects [17-19]."

"The techniques able to incorporate wastes by means of a heat treatment present the advantage to fix the residue with chemical bonds. Among these techniques there are vitrification and sintering which are characterised by different operating temperatures in the range of 950-1500°C and the involved raw materials develop silicatic crystalline phases and glassy matrices capable to immobilize heavy metal contents in the waste matrix. In this work incinerator bottom ash, polishing and glazing ceramic sludges have undergone to thermal treatments in order to valorise the waste as secondary raw material for the obtainment of re-products. The chemical efficiency of the process adopted has been evaluated by comparing the results of release tests applied to the as-received wastes and to the thermally treated materials in order to verify the effectiveness of the different matrices to fix the waste components.IntroductionVitrification is one of the most promising technological options for the treatment of some kinds of waste. The high temperature involved in the process (1200-1500°C) leads to the complete destruction of organic pollutants, such as dioxins, and glassy network formed can incorporate heavy metals. Some vitrification processes naturally occur: glasses produced by volcanic eruptions, such as obsidians (Na2O-K2O-Al2O3-SiO2) and basaltic (CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2) rocks, are basically inert materials even when they contain toxic elements, because these are embedded in an extremely stable glassy matrix. The disadvantage of vitrification is that it is an energy-intensive process involving relatively high costs, therefore its use is better justified if a high-quality product with optimised properties can be fabricated. The most effective way to improve the properties of the vitrified material is the transformation into glass ceramic. This is a fine-grained polycrystalline material (typically from 50% to 98% of the volume may be crystalline) formed when a glass of suitable composition is heat treated and hence undergone to controlled crystallisation (phenomenon named devitrification). The three key variables in the design of a glass-ceramic are: glass composition which controls glass viscosity related to the effectiveness of nucleation and rapidity of crystallisation; glass-ceramic phase assemblage (that is, the types of crystals and the proportion of crystals to glass) which is responsible for many of the physical and chemical properties; nature of the crystalline microstructure (crystal size and morphology and the textural relationship among the crystals and glass) which is the key to many mechanical and optical properties. In particular, a partly crystalline material can be obtained by powder sintering."

The clean utilization of the residue containing chloride, CuCl residue, produced from zinc hydrometallurgy is very important for the recycle of valuable metals. And drying is the main process in recycling. In this study, response surface methodology was used to optimize operating conditions of the drying of CuCl residue in a convection oven and desirability function used as the methodology for the optimization. Optimization factors were air temperature (80–100°C), material thickness (10–25mm) and process time (80–120min) while investigated responses was final moisture content. The optimum conditions were found to be the temperature of 95.48°C with the material thickness of 13.47mm for the process time of 89.48 min. Under optimum conditions, the predicted moisture content of CuCl residue was 4.11% while the experimental date was 4.13%. The experimental value after process optimization was found to agree satisfactory with the predicted value. After drying, XRD was used to analyze the main phases of CuCl residue. The CuCl residue is made up of CuCl,Cu2O, ZnS and other compounds.

High strength low alloy (HSLA) steels with high strength, high toughness, good corrosion resistance and weldability, can be widely used in shipbuilding, automobile, construction, bridging industry, etc. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties can be influenced by thermomechanical processing. In this study, themomechanical processing is optimized to control the matrix microstructure and nano-scale precipitates in the matrix simultaneously. It is found that the low-temperature toughness and ductility of the steels are significantly the matrix microstructure during enhancing the strength by introducing the nano-scale precipitates. The effects of alloying elements on the microstructure evolution and nano-scale precipitation are also discussed.

This study investigated leaching kinetics by alternative lixiviants for copper leaching from chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), the most abundant copper resource in the world. As a refractory sulfide mineral, chalcopyrite shows low copper extraction due to passivation on chalcopyrite surface. Also, decrease of copper grade with high portion chalcopyrite requires the alternative leaching procedure to increase copper recovery. Therefore, alternative lixiviants such as sulfurous acid and methanesulfonic acid (MSA) were tested for both concentrate and low grade ore to enhance copper extraction. Also, an oxidant, hydrogen peroxide, was compared to ferric to find out the improvement of leaching kinetic. In concentrate leaching tests, 30 g/L MSA showed the highest copper extraction (47%), compared to other lixiviants at 75 °C. Periodical H2O2 addition enhanced copper extraction, and above 90% of copper extraction was observed within 96 h by periodical addition of 0.6% H2O2 at 75 °C. The activation energy of chalcopyrite leaching by MSA and H2O2 achieved 40 kJ/mol, which is chemical reaction control. The results of low grade ore leaching tests indicates that no significant difference among lixiviants (H2SO4, H2SO3 and MSA) with ferric was observed, all of which achieved around 37% within 24 h at room temperature. However, significant increase of copper extraction (>80%) was observed at both 20 g/L MSA and 10 g/L H2SO4 conditions by the addition of 10% H2O2.

The leaching of indium from refractory zinc oxide flue dust(ZOFD) is attempted to utilize microwave sulfating roasting process, followed by water leaching. The ZOFD and roasted product were characterized by XRD and SEM/EDS analysis. The effects of various roasting parameters, such as roasting temperature/duration, the proportion of sulfuric acid, as well as the leaching parameters such as the leaching duration and liquid/solid ratio, were assessed. The results indicate that nearly 97% of indium could be leached under the following conditions: mass ratio of concentrated sulfuric acid to ZOFD to be 0.5, roasting temperature of 150 ℃ and duration of 1.5 hours; while the optimal leaching conditions hold at temperature of 25 ℃ for 1 hour, with 4:1 of liquid/solid ratio. The indium leaching rate by the microwave roasting increased by 8% as compared with the conventional roasting process under identical conditions.

An Early Proterozoic orogenic terrane of metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks underlies Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. Middle Proterozoic epizonal terranes of anorogenic granite and rhyolite, a known metallogenic province partly exposed in southeastern Missouri, overlap the orogenic terrane on the south. These Proterozoic terranes, covered by less than 1,000 meters of Phanerozoic strata, contain a virtually untapped source of mineral wealth and are one of the last frontiers for geologic exploration in the continen-tal United States. Petrographic study of subsurface samples is a powerful tool in the identification of favorable host rocks for a variety of ore deposits.

"Abstract: How to reduce carbon dioxide emissions has become a vexing problem, meanwhile, there exist high energy consumption and low efficiency problems in the existing CO2 capture and storage technologies. For CO2 comprehensive Utilization, this paper researches a new technology of absorbing the CO2 emission with high alkaline calcium or high alkaline wastewater sludge mineralization of calcium and invent a core device for multi-level jet carbonation. The industrial test has been carried out in China Xinyu slag Engineering Co., Ltd. The wastewater flow is 150m3/h in the pilot scale. The prepared calcium carbonate has a whiteness greater than 90%, particle size less than 150nm. Meanwhile, the economic scale is still on an increasing trend in the next 50-100 years, leading to a continuous increment in carbon dioxide discharge. According to the international energy agency forecasts, the energy-relative CO2 discharge in China will rise to 11,615 million tons, 91.3% higher than it in 2007. In the year of 2012, the CO2 gross discharge has reached 10,000 million tons, obviously higher than the predicted value. It is a tremendous task to reduce the emission. Non-ferrous metals industry is one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide among the industrial circle, the whole industry might discharge a huge amount of carbon dioxide (over 600 million tons), in which the electrolytic aluminum industry is the largest energy consuming industry and CO2 emitter. At present, the CO2 discharge has focused by the whole world due to the environmental problems it causes; meanwhile, supplement of new carbon source is needed due to the exhausting oil and coal resources, so that various countries in the world are attaching importance of the recycle and purification of CO2. Many countries are studying on the cyclic utilization of carbon dioxide. Gas CO2 is mainly applied in chemical, pharmaceutical raw materials, beverage filling agent, refrigerant, inert medium, solvents, pressure source, the welding protective gas, antioxidant and fire extinguishing agent, etc. Solid CO2 is mainly applied in penicillin production, fish, cream, ice cream and other food storage and transportation at low temperature, etc. nowadays, such methods as absorption method, membrane separation, adsorption, etc. are widely used to recycle CO2, with such problems as high investment cost and technical constraints etc."
