"Perovskite-type lead zinc niobate (PZN) exhibits excellent electrical properties such as high dielectric constant, high electrostrictive coefficient and superior piezoelectricity. Therefore, PZN ceramics are very promising for high performance electronic devices. However, perovskite phase PZN is not stable under the ambient atmosphere. Accordingly, it is very difficult to prepare single-phase perovskite PZN ceramics. In this study, A-site cation of lead was partially substituted for barium to stabilize the perovskite phase of the PZN (Ba-doped PZN) powder. In addition, molecular design of an alkoxide precursor was controlled for a low-temperature processing. As a result, molecular design to suppress the lead-volatilization during calcination was preferred for a low-temperature processing. Processing temperature for a single-phase perovskite was depended on the amount of barium dopant. Doping of20 mole% of barium resulted in the single phase perovskite at 900 °C. The temperature for the single phase perovskite of Ba-doped PZN powder, which depended upon the amount of Ba-doping, was lower than that of the powder prepared by the atmosphere controlled conventional powder processing at least by 150 °C.IntroductionFerroelectric thin films and powders with perovskite structure are of renewed interest for micro-electronic applications, including ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM), dynamic random access memory (DRAM), and thin-layer capacitors integrated onto a silicon wafer [1-3]. In addition, recent advancement in micro-machine requires a high performance micro-actuator [4]. A perovskite type relaxor of Pb(Zn113 Nb213)03 is one of the promising materials for a high performance capacitor and microactuator because of their high permittivity and electrostrictive coefficient [5]. Therefore, this paper focuses on the low temperature processing of Ba-doped PZN powders.Chemical solution deposition (CSD) from molecular-designed alkoxide precursor solution is one of the most promising techniques for processing high-performance powders and thin films because it offers precise control of compositions on a molecular scale as well as a low processing temperature [6]. However, chemical solution deposition of perovskite type PZN powders and ceramics are very difficult because of the formation of stable pyrochlore phases. Therefore in the past, PZN powders and single crystal have been prepared by the hydrothermal method or flux method as well as the partial substitution method of a A-site cation [7-10]. In this study, a suitable molecular design for a preparation of perovskite type Ba-doped PZN powders with a chemical solution deposition process is investigated as well as the effect of A-site cation substitution. Chemical solution deposition from molecular-designed alkoxide precursor solution is expected to decrease the amount of a A-site substitution and/or a crystallization temperature for a single phase perovskite. This paper describes ""the relation between molecular-design and processing temperatures for a single-phase perovskite of Ba-doped PZN powders in comparison with the conventional oxides mixing method."

Gécamines is the world largest cobalt producer with about 60 % of the Western World production. During the last ten years, its annual production varied from 5,400 to 14,600 t/year. The actual cobalt production capacity of Gécarnines is 18,000 t/year and could be increased in the near future if necessary. Cobalt is presently produced at the Shituru plant by an old in-pulp electrolysis process and in Luilu, by electrolysis of a clear weakly acidic solution. The Shituru Cobalt quality is lower than the Luilu one. For that reason, part of the Shituru Cobalt is fire refined and cast into granules. Large efforts have been succesfully accomplished to improve the cobalt quality. This has been made possible by a better knowledge of the purification processes and of the electrolysis parameters.

KGHM Polska Miedz SA, in existence since nineteen seventies, operates three underground mines and three smelters with total production of over 400 000 mtpy of electrolytic copper. Its impact on the environment, very serious in the past, has been gradually reduced. While in general emissions into the air and water have been brought under control, attention recently has shifted to the disposal of wastes and residues. The main streams of wastes are flotation tailings, slags and dust captured from the dedusting systems. Much effort has already been expended and is still being spent to utilize this waste for by-products production or to dispose of it within the process by recycling. The most effective measures taken up thus far, as well as present activities directed at tailings disposal, are presented.

The effect of microwave irradiation on grinding property of coal was studied by using Hardgrove grindability index tester. Superior grindability of coal was obtained to varying extent after microwave irradiation treatment. The variation in microstructure of pulverized coal during microwave irradiation was observed by utilizing scanning electronic microscope (SEM). The results indicated that the different microwave absorbance of minerals and carbon matrix led to cracks on their interface, by which coal particles were further pulverized and therefore the granularity of coal powder was reduced. Due to the different formation process of various coals, bituminite and anthracite are very different in physical and chemical properties. According to the content of coal pulverization, it can found that microwave irradiation has a stronger pulverizing effect on bituminite in comparison to anthracite.

A promising method for removing heavy metal ions from dilute effluents is ion- or precipitate- flotation, in which a suitable collector is added to form hydrophobic metal-collector complexes or compounds that can be collected as foams. We have successfully removed Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(ll) from dilute solutions using sodium dodecylsulfate and ethanol as collector and frother respectively. However the process would not be economically viable unless the collector could be recycled, and the heavy metals recovered in a concentrated, preferably marketable, form from the foams. We investigated four different methods to decompose heavy metal-dodecylsulfate complexes, namely precipitation of hydroxides, precipitation of sulfides, chemical stripping, and electrolysis. We compare the performance of these methods. In each case the observed behavior is related to known thermodynamic data, and potential applications are discussed.

The weak acid is a by product obtained in a pre-treatment of gases from a copper smelter prior to sulfuric acid manufacture and the main components of this weak acid are: sulfuric acid. copper, arsenic. antimony, bismuth and iron. Usually, this effluent is neutralized with lime and the solid residues are stored in a landfill as a hazardous waste. This work was directed at determining the optimal conditions to recover copper from weak acid using a cementation process before the neutralization of the effluent. The variables investigated are: Effluent temperature, iron scrap amount and acid concentration versus reaction time. The results of these experiments show that the cementation process of copper and the co-cementation of impurities such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth were in accord with the theory of the electrode potentials.

Sumitomo Shisaka Works has been treating EAF(Electric Arc Furnace) dust to recover zinc and lead in the Waelz Kiln process. Since its commencement of operation in 1977, many technical improvements have been successfully made to increase the production capacity and the zinc recovery rate. The EAF dust charge to the Waelz Kiln was increased from 35,000tly to 120,00OtIy, and the production of zinc oxide now amounts to 40,000tly. The zinc content in the clinker was decreased from 5% to less than I%, by the optimization of the kiln heat pattern with no accretion trouble. And the clinker has become more a valuable raw material for steel making. This paper describes the above progress ofthe SMM Waelz Kiln process operation at the Shisaka Works.

The tolling, or processing for a fixed fee, of aluminum drosses to recover the metal units is a common practice in the Aluminum Industry. The Dross Toller is acting for the owner, and since most dross processes result in material going to landfill, it is important for the owner of the dross to insure that the toiler is processing the material and handling waste disposal in an environmentally responsible manner. The paper discusses the Dross Toiler Audit Program, first from the Reynolds Metals Company perspective. Included are the reasons the company deems it necessary to audit and a description of the items covered during the audit. Finally, there will be a discussion of the audit from the Tollers perspective - what the Toiler can expect when the auditor arrives.

Continuous measurement based on radiation pyrometry has often met with difficulties whose causes have been obscure. In this paper the experience gained with on-line pyrometry in utility and Kraft recovery boilers in the range 800-l400oC will be reported. It is shown that the inherent problems are best resolved by using a spectral pyrometer not sensitive to gas radiation. The radiation from the suspended particles thus provides the signal. It is further shown that the principle cause of difficulties is signal calibration drift caused by heat fluxes originating from surrounding surfaces and reflected by the particles to the pyrometer. Several examples are given how such problems may be resolved using process information and/or additional measurements, fed to and processed by and on-line microcomputer.

"The XD TM * approach to producing metal matrix composites employs an in-situ precipitation technique for the formation of the reinforcement directly in the matrix of interest. Key features include: thermodynamically stable reinforcement; clean particle/matrix interfaces, single-crystal reinforcement; size, chemistry, and shape control; uniform distribution; compatibility with conventional ingot techniques; and grain refinement.Using XD~ technology it is possible to simultaneously introduce a number of different reinforcements in a given matrix, thus allowing for designing the microstructure to meet a specific material need. Thus, XD1l'1 technology is a very useful technique for achieving ""designer"" or ""engineered"" microstructures. XD TM technology has been applied to a number of systems including AI, NiAI, TiAI and Cu. Materials property and processing benefits will be discussed."

UFP are defined by atoms or their clusters having diameter in the range of l0Å-0.l.um. Due to a ratio of very large surface area to volume, they have peculiar properties such as extra high surface energy. Recently UFP deposition technique may find its new applications to various areas such as conductive/resistive film formation. In this method, gas flow with UFP jet through the nozzle which is considered to be a free molecular flow is maintained at a very high speed (~100m/s). Using this technique, mixture film of Fe and Ni, and Ag/ Ag-Alloy etc. were obtained, and their mechanical and electro-magnetic properties were determined. The experimental results are pending. The test results and discussion will be presented in the main paper.

Elkem has a small industrial scale. Muti-Purpose furnace at the MEFOS Metallurgical Research Facility in Lulea, Sweden. The furnace is 2 meters in diameter with installed power of 4.8 MVA, equipped with oil coiled freeze lining, gas tight electrode seals and feed chutes and a slag flow control for continuous tapping. During tests in June, 1991, the furnace was continuously operated on a high silica slag at loads from 1.5 to 4,0 MW. The slag was then charges to a low silica, high iron and lime composition. Steel plant dust was added, smelted and reduced. The slag was made more ceramic by adding alumobrick and alumina. Data from the start-up and initial operating phase of the, Elkem EAF dust plant at Laclede Steel will also reviewed.

Alkyd resins are used in surface treatment. They are product of the glycerolysis followed by polymerization. In the present work it was studied methods of alkyd resin production from crude glycerol compared with resin produced with pure glycerol. This glycerol corresponds to 10% of the final products in the biodiesel production. The crude glycerol was partially purified with neutralization, flotation and adsorption. The experiments were accomplished with temperature control, inert atmosphere and with several quantities of the substrate. For the products characterization physic-chemistry methods, infrared spectroscopy and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance were used. According to the observed results, the resins obtained with crude glycerol have presented similar properties of the classic alkyd resin produced with pure glycerol. The exploitation of the crude glycerol reduces the stages and costs of the process.

Aluminum has experienced significant growth in automotive applications over the last decade as a result of its properties and performance attributes. Looking to the future, the opportunities for continued growth in powertrain and suspension applications plus light weighting of body structures offer the potential for considerable further growth. This represents a growing "energy bank" of aluminum that will become available for recycling at the end of these vehicles' lives. Today, around 90% of the aluminum is recovered and recycled from scrapped vehicles because of its high value relative to other materials. The future growth offers opportunity for new technology and practices, to maximize scrap quality and recycling application. This paper will review the demand for these new technologies and practices and will discuss industry activities being pursued in this area.

Simple compartmental models of a laboratory batch gibbsite precipitator were used to investigate the influence of the number of compartments, the local shear rate and solids distribution on the crystal size distribution (CSD) under the conditions where aggregation is the dominant mechanism. In the current work, a power law relationship was assumed between the local agglomeration and shear rate. The simulation results showed that both the local shear rate and solids distribution have significant effect on the CSD responses, and the interchanging flows has a lesser impact with its influence strongly depending on the former two factors. Overall, the results reveal that in an aggregation controlled precipitation system, the influence of each of the factors on the CSD depends on the local hydrodynamic conditions in the precipitator, as well as their interactions.

The secondary copper producer, Montanwerke Brixlegg AG (Austria), produces 73 000 tonnes of cathodic copper per year using ISA tankhouse technology. METTOP GmbH (Austria) evaluated the different anode qualities from the plant with relation to the current efficiency and specific energy consumption. Parameters including the chemical and physical anode quality, current and current density distribution at each cathode, voltage, and distance between each cathode and anode were examined. In addition, the temperature, chemical analysis, and conductivity of the electrolyte was determined for each investigated cell, as well as the anode weight, anode scrap, cathode sheet, and short circuits. Metallographic analysis was also performed on selected dendrites. The investigations resulted in specific improvements in the tankhouse process including the level of anode impurities, and future projects are planned for further tankhouse optimization.

Many times, the maintenance professionals have been involved in changes to processes or systems. Often they rely on seat of the pants knowledge to determine whether or not they were successful. More often than not, once our attention has been turned to other endeavors, the initiative has floundered. This paper will describe those measures that can be most effectively used to track and manage the success of implementing an improved Work Management System. However, not only will the paper discuss traditional work indicators, it will also explain how to establish the behaviors in the work place that will ultimately ensure successful implementation. Combined with the discussion on indicators will be a discussion on how to tie them to bottom line results and display them in the form of a scorecard. Actual results will be discussed.

ASARCO Incorporated, a large and diverse producer of non-ferrous metals, is involved primarily in smelting and refining of copper and lead. The Company also recovers by-product metals and chemicals produced in the smelting and refining process including selenium, tellurium, silver, gold, platinum, palladium, bismuth, antimony oxide, lead-antimony alloys, and nickel sulfate. The treatment of complex concentrates, containing high level's of impurities, also results in the production of various sludges, drosses, dusts and slags. This paper addresses the interplant and intraplant transfer of these materials between the copper and lead circuits and their subsequent treatment for maximum metals recovery. It also describes the role of ENCYCLB/TEXAS Inc., a subsidiary of Asarco, which treats Asarco's by-products, as well as hazardous and non-hazardous wastes produced by other manufacturers.

LG Metals Corporation started its second smelter operation at Onsan along with the existing flash smelter on January 31, 1998. Onsan smelter has been producing about 140,000 tons of copper annually from concentrates with the flash smelting line since 1979. In accordance with an increase in domestic copper demand, LG Metals Corporation decided to expand smelting and refining capacity by introducing a second smelter line using the Mitsubishi continuous process and a new tankhouse in 1995. After two years' expansion works consisting of engineering, procurement, construction and a successful commissioning test, the total smelting capacity of Onsan smelter increased to 340,000 ton of copper annually from concentrates. This paper describes the smelting facilities, operation result, problems encountered and improvements during the start-up and early operation of Onsan's new smelter

Light from conventional light source or laser is passed through a polarizer and then incident on the specimen At the nematicisotropic, transition temperature, the medium becomes isotropic and looks clear and transparent. The transition can be approached by changing the impurity concentration or, indirectly, by tuning the temperature since the pinning strengths of the random and crystal potential have in general a different temperature dependence.
