A study of paleogeography and paleo-environment, coupled with modern geochemical techniques and geologic inference, points to the presence of unconventional platinum group metal deposits in domestic and foreign ultrabasic terranes. During the laterisation of the tectonized and serpentinized mafic and ultramafic rock units, onshore winds provided abundant low temperature chloride to the laterite-saprolite profile. Here, an environment formed where gold, silver and platinum was dissolved, transported and redeposited. Changes in climatic conditions have helped preserve the redeposited metals in fossil laterites. The definition of "unconventional mineral resources" used here is taken from the Cameron Volume of Unconventional Mineral Deposits published by SME-AIME in 1983: "Unconventional mineral resources represent materials of possible economic importance that occur in geological or physical environments that have not been successfully exploited for the particular mineral." (van Rensburg, 1983). Chromite-rich rocks worldwide contain high platinum group metal concentrations. This feature is found in ophiolitic sequences, Alaskan-type ultrabasic complexes or statiform intrusions. Association of platinum group metals with chromite has received much attention. The reason for that associa¬tion, however, is not clear. Much has been written about how and where the platinum group metals occur. It is known that they are present in the spinel lattice, as solid solution elements in sulfides and as discrete platinum group minerals. This article outlines the reasons geologists should be looking at lateritic terranes to determine the feasibility of searching for undiscovered, low-grade platinum group metals amenable to openpit, bulk mining. Laterite-saprolite horizons could contain significant platinum group metals and location of anomalous values on the surface and in the weathered profile can lead to discovery.

In 1973, the Subcommittee on Contracting Practices, U. S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology, National Academy of Sciences, under the able chairmanship of A. A. Mathews, Engineering Consultant, now residing at Kaunakokai, Hawaii, undertook the task of developing recommendations for improving the performance of underground construction work, reducing the costs of such work and minimizing the adverse atmosphere in which owners and contractors were performing their respective functions. The author of this paper and C. F. Palmetier, a highly qualified engineer, were thereupon appointed as staff assistants to the Subcommittee, to conduct a study of existing practices and relationships in Western Europe and in the United States, to formulate recommendations, for consideration by the Subcommittee and the participants in a future workshop, as to desirable improvements in United States contracting practices and relationships. The study, conducted during 1973 and 1974, involved personal interviews of a total of 162 owners, engineers, contractors, lawyers, and educators throughout the United States and in 7 European countries, the analysis of 178 replies to questionnaires sent to individuals and firms involved directly or indirectly in construction, and a workshop, near Napa, California, attended by 53 representatives of all segments of the construction community. The resulting report, entitled "Better Contracting for Underground Construction", was submitted by the Subcommittee to the National Academy of Sciences, which approved its publication in 1974 by the National Technical Information Service. Veins containing silver and gold values, with some associated values in copper, lead, and zinc, were discovered in 1890 by Will Kirwin in what was later designated the Kirwin mining district situated on the North Fork of the Wood River, about 56 km (35 miles) west of Meeteetse. (See Fig. I.) After considerable prospecting activity, including the driving of several short adits on veins, most of theclaims in the district were consolidated into two ownerships. One was held by the Galena Ridge Mining Co. which was organized on Nov. 18, 1902. The other was held by the Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. which was organized on Mar. 23, 1903. During the period from 1903 to 1907 inclusive, the two companies continued exploration on veins in their respective areas. The major exploration-development activity for the Galena Ridge Mining Co. was the driving of the Galena Ridge crosscut adit for 709 m (2327 ft), to cut veins at depth which had been explored by short adits high on Galena Ridge. Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. concentrated their work on the Bryan and Pickwick veins. Neither of the companies found ore that was rich enough to sustain profitable operations in that remote locality. Most of the major exploration and development activities were stopped in late 1907. A major snowslide in February 1907 killed three people and destroyed several buildings and may have contributed to discouragement in the area. From 1908 to the early 1920s, only minor exploration work was done. Galena Ridge Mining Co. was dissolved Aug. 5, 1922, and Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. was dissolved on Mar. 23, 1923.

"The European aluminium industry, through its member organisation the European Aluminium Association (EAA), initiated a program on sustainable development for the aluminium industry in 2001. The first step involved the development of a set of sustainable development (SD) indicators for the industry, taking into account of the different interests involved and also the different existing conventions. The indicator set was developed during 2001 and 2002 with the assistance of recognised partners, including Wuppertal Institute from Germany and Versailles University from France. As well, both internal and external stakeholder groups were involved in order to validate the indicators. This has resulted in a set of thirty-four indicators used in the first survey exercise. In the survey the EAA, together with the national aluminium associations, attempted to cover all European plants producing alumina, primary aluminium, rolling ingots, extrusion ingots, foil and recycled aluminium -covering approximately 800 plants. The survey used two points in time, 1997 and 2002, in order to start developing a trend for the individual indicators and to measure progress over time. The industry response to the survey was very positive, with a total industry coverage based on tonnage reported of over 80% for 2002 data and 70% for 1997 data. The results also show a solid progress for most indicators and particularly for social indicators such as training performance, community involvement and employees health programmes. The EAA is committed to conducting this as a regular exercise and is engaged in a number of stakeholder workshops in order to present the survey results, to review the indicators used and to also consider adjustments of these based on feedback from stakeholders and experiences from the first data collection."

INTRODUCTION The following papers describe the extraction of nickel in the form of ferronickel from the Dominican laterites. The Falconbridge process was developed initially in the Falconbridge Metallurgical Laboratories and subsequently in several successive stages of pilot plant operation in the Dominican Republic. In the course of this work we came to believe that there is advantage in piloting on site. Mining, metallurgical and geo-political considerations all have major impact and that belief has been borne out by commercial plant experience. Lateritic nickel ores differ substantially, even within the same orebody, in their amenability to extraction methods. The Falconbridge process takes account of the heterogeneous nature of the deposit. Three years of geological field exploration led to ten years of process development after it was realised that the then known metallurgical processes would not give economical extraction from the Dominican ores. In addition to establishing the viability of a novel pyrometallurgical approach, it was necessary to verify design parameters for a very considerable scale-up to prototype commercial operation. The plant was eventually constructed within the original estimates of time and cost. Unique features contributing to the technical and commercial success of the project are described. Additionally, some bold extrapolation based on pilot plant work, eventually proved to be quite conservative. The mine is not a conventional open pit operation, but is perhaps better characterised as an earth moving job. Novel application of mobile equipment led to great flexibility in the mine, where operation of several mining fronts is essential to maintaining uniformity of ore feed to the plant. The Coal, characterized by coal quality parameters as for example, ash content (Ad), moisture (Wrt), heat content (Qr1), sulphur content (Sd) and other parameters is still in many countries the basic source of energy. Energy is life, especially in modern society, where the demand for ecologically clean energy is very high; and therefore, there is great importance in effective coal utilization Direct utilization - burning of coal for energy generation, is still one of the most effective methods. In most cases, it is one of the cheapest energy transformation methods in spite of the fact that this energy transformation is connected with the deterioration of our surroundings. Deterioration can be substantially reduced if the burning of coal at power stations, heat power stations and other coal consumers is optimized. That means the burning is done in steam boilers, the technical state of which is very good; the coal has minimimum .variations with respect to the projected values; and the burning process is controlled and checked not only from a regulation point-of-view but also from an ecological point-of-view. The instrumentation capable of measuring the characteristic coal quality parameters in real time exists and it forms the basic assumption for the work our research team has made. The proper application of this instrumentation is able to provide information for burning process optimalization. It is the main topic of this paper, which is the compilation of the information on our work -made during the last five years. Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) has become an accepted standard in the field of mine ventilation tracer gas studies. It has a wide variety of uses for defining mine ventilation flows that cannot be adequately described using conventional instruments such as anemometers and smoke tubes. The Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), Energy, Mines and Resources Canada, has been using SF for the past 4 years and has developed numerous release and sampling systems to increase its versatility. The CBCRL has also completed a successful field trial of an automated rapid sequential SF6 analyzer (which gives a pseudo real-time readout) that can be used underground. In doing this work, the authors recognised the potential of being able to use more than one tracer gas simultaneously in an underground study. Two alternative tracer gases (Freon-13B1 and Freon-12) have already been used by CBCRL in some of their underground work. These gases can be measured by gas chromatography utilising an electron capture detector in a similar manner to SF6. A description of these gases, the methods for 6' their handling, release and sampling are given in this paper together with a brief outline of the analytical system used to measure them. Their suitability to mining applications is compared with SF6. A study in which these three gases were used together is discussed and the results and conclusions given. Some of the additional uses for multiple tracer gases to assist the mine ventilation engineer in resolving problems and improving his day-to-day monitoring are discussed. Finally, a brief analysis of developments which can be expected in the near future is outlined.

The simulation of randomness in a system of components is important in certain types of systems analyses. This paper presents procedures for generating ventilation networks that are random in many of their characteristics and which can be used to study the performance characteristics of various mine ventilation network analysis procedures without introducing undue bias as a result of the nature of the network. Among the parameters of a network that affect the efficiency of a network analysis procedure are: (1) the interconnection pattern of airways, (2) the distribution of resistances in the network, (3) the number and location of fans, (4) the fan characteristic curve, (5) the size of the network (number of branches), and (6) the density of the network (number of nodes compared with the number of branches). In the procedures proposed here, a single fan with a fixed characteristic is used to simplify the problem and eliminate the fan as a source of variation. The resistances of the airways, the pattern of interconnection of the airways, and the fan location are randomly chosen in an attempt to eliminate the bias in the performance characteristics of the network analysis methods caused by these parameters. A method of generating biconnected networks while keeping the "randomness" of these other parameters is suggested. At the same time, the size and the density of networks are controlled to investigate their impacts on the performances of the network analysis procedures. The combination of these two variables has been termed the "level of complexity" of the network in this paper. Finally, a summary and conclusions section outlines some characteristics of the networks generated, using the random generation procedures outlined in the paper.

Efficient performance of EPB TBMs in clayey ground is primarily dominated by the flow capability of the excavated muck in the cutterhead and screw conveyor. Currently, Consistency Index approach is used to evaluate clay clogging potential, but it does not include the effects of surcharge pressure on clay behavior. In this paper, a macro-scale soil rheometer is introduced to assess the clogging potential under various water content and surcharge loading conditions. The results show that, in addition to water content, surcharge pressure has clear impact on clay clogging too. In practice, Consistency Index chart can be refined to incorporate the impact of face pressure to better simulate the EPB tunneling conditions.

Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) is conventionally used in gold processing operations when preg robbing components are present in the ore. CIL process is becoming attractive even in other situations when preg robbing is not a factor. This paper discusses the situations in which the CIL circuit can be applied. The results of Leach/CIP and CIL circuits at Newmont's Mill No.2, 4 and 5 are presented for comparison. Newmont's Mill No. 4 was initially designed for a throughput of 4500 tons per day. The mill is presently operating at an average throughput of 7300 tons per day without significant changes to the original design. The design considerations of the Mill No.4 CIL circuit are discussed.

Brockway Glass Company, Inc., manufactures glass containers at fourteen plants located in nine states. The relatively high place value of the major glass batch components dictates that raw material supplies be obtained from numerous sources in the United States and Canada. One objective of our central composition control program is to arrive at a glass composition with similar physical properties at each of our plant locations. This requires that adjustments be made in the batch compositions to compensate for chemical variations from one raw material source to another. Minor chemical variations will occur in sand, limestone, and dolomite from one source to another. Major variations are present in the alumina sources because of the diverse rock types utilized.

Industrial minerals are just other rocks, except for the unique characteristics that make them useful in an industrial process. There is not a ready market for this type mineral and one or more uses must be developed to sustain production. The name "olivine" is a generic term used to indicate a group of orthosilicate minerals in a solid solution series, with forsterite (Mg2SiO4) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4) as endpoints. Since neither is found alone in nature, the mineral is always a combination of the two. The commercial deposits are high in magnesium and on the high end of the melting scale in the series. The name comes from the olive-green color.

The word "research" has been used in the title of my presentation somewhat against my better judgement. There are many definitions of the word. But the one I like best comes from Webster's New World Dictionary. It reads: "Careful, systematic, patient study and investigation in some field of knowledge, undertaken to discover or establish facts or principles. ..." I like that. In only 9 words, the definition conveys to me the very essence of what should be going on either in or for the coal industry. Unfortunately, not enough coal-related research is going on. And much of what is being done is, in my view, not really as effective as it might be.

Although these exhibit similar structures overall, there are more acute valuation problems in alluvials. Most of this description will therefore be about alluvials with comments on bedded vis-a- vis alluvial deposits where necessary. Although geological comments refer mainly to lateritic deposits the method of valuation described applies to all bedded deposits, e. g. coal, limestone, phosphate. In general, the more a deposit suffers alteration during or after its formation and the more the sampling process disturbs its material, the greater the difficulties of valuation. Emphasis is laid on structure, as in any kind of deposit valuation cannot proceed until its structures are understood. Not all the structures found in alluvials will occur in bedded deposits, of course.

Epithermal gold deposits occur in and near the marginal fault that circumscribes the Goldfield, Nevada, Tertiary caldera. The gold occurs disseminated in alunite, pyrite, and kaolin- bearing silicified zones that are controlled by the circular faults. Other Tertiary calderas (i.e., Summitville and Red Mountain No. 3) have epithermal disseminated gold deposits located in and near their marginal circular faults in settings that resemble the Goldfield example. These additional caldera- controlled epithermal gold deposits are also characterized by alunite, pyrite, and kaolin-bearing silicified rock that act as hosts for the gold disseminations. The Goldfield District is therefore an exploration model for those seeking disseminated epithermal gold deposits in a caldera setting.

In analyzing cost performance, managers must initially consider the issue of scope. Is the analysis for a single responsibility center or multiple centers? For a single period or a number of periods? If multiple responsibility centers are being examined, how can managers compensate for differences in their sizes? Several techniques have been developed to analyze the relationships in a set of financial statements at a single point in time and the trends in these relationships over multiple periods. Cross-sectional techniques focus on the first of these, and time-series techniques look at the latter. Although this text focuses on cost performance, these methods also can be used for revenue-related analyses.

The Upper Scioto West Interceptor Sewer (USWIS), Parts 1 and 2, consists of approximately 7,128 meters (23,385 ft) of 328 cm (129 in.) diameter tunnel. The project ex-tends from the City of Dublin to Griggs Dam in the City of Columbus. The majority of the tunnel was designed for excavation in rock by TBM. The remaining portions span pre-glaciation formed valleys in-filled with glacially-derived sediments. Tunnel construction in one of the glacial till filled sections includes excavation by drilling and controlled blasting. The other section will be constructed by ground consolidation followed by excavation by TBM. This paper describes the methods employed to mine the glacial till filled valleys.

There axe two essential features of administrative practices in tunnelling in order to provide proper encouragement to innovative and economic tunnelling: first, that there should be a continuity in the decision making at all stages so that the full implications of decisions in early stages of planning and design are understood; second, that there should be appropriate provision for variation so that the greatest possible benefit can be derived from modifying the working scheme in relation to the characteristics of the ground and from study of its behaviour during execution of the work. Examples are given from the Authors[?] experience as to the benefits to be derived from the application of such principles.

Grefco Inc. operates two diatomite mines in the western Santa Ynez Mountains. The larger of the two mines, the Palos Colorados Mine, is located approximately seven miles southeast of Lompoc. The Miguelito Mine is located about two miles south of Lompoc on the west side of the Miguelito Canyon. Diatomite from the Palos Colorados and Miguelito mines is trucked to the Grefco plant at Lompoc for processing (Figure 1). HISTORY Grefco, Inc. evolved from the originating Dicalite Company which in 1929 began operations at the Walteria plant in the Palos Verdes Hills south of Los Angeles. In 1942 Dicalite leased the Palos Colorados mine at Lompoc. In 1944 the Dicalite Company was purchased by Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.

Geopolymerization is a process by which Al-Si minerals undergo dissolution and polymerization in an alkaline solution to form a monolithic material with a high mechanical strength (Davidovits, 1991, 1994). In this study, the factors affecting the geopolymerization of Na feldspar (albite) and K -feldspar (microcline) were investigated. It was found that both Na feldspar and K -feldspar are reactive in geopolymerization with the resultant geopolymers showing a high compressive strength. The leaching ability, the proper molar ratio of Si/Al in the geopolymeric gel phase and the higher average hardness of the undissolved particles remaining in the geopolymers are found to greatly affect the ultimate compressive strength of the formed geopolymers.
