Previous experimental results have shown that an increase in temperature and/or oxygen concentration leads to an increase in the hydrophobicity of fluorite (CaF2) with adsorbed oleate. Subsequently, ex-situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) transmission studies suggested that this increase in hydrophobicity was the result of double-bond reactions between adjacent oleate species adsorbed at the fluorite surface. Now an in-situ FT-IR study on single crystals of fluorite has been used to monitor this phenomenon using internal reflection spectroscopy (IRS) with the crystals serving as reactive internal reflection elements. The double-bond reaction has been correlated with in-situ adsorption density measurements. These results demonstrate that only the first chemisorbed oleate layer undergoes the double-bond reaction at an appreciable rate. However, multilayers of precipitated calcium oleate in the case of fluorite appear to react minimally even for oxygen saturated solutions at elevated temperatures.

The results of using a simple analytical solution and a relatively complex numerical model to estimate ground-water inflow to an open pit mine are compared. The analytical solution assumes lateral, radial flow to a fully penetrating pit in an idealized confined aquifer, whereas the numerical model simulates fully three-dimensional flow to a partially penetrating pit from a water table aquifer. The latter is obviously a more realistic simulation of the problem, but the former method is significantly easier to use, Comparison of the results obtained with the two methods for some typical hydrogeologic conditions encountered in mining yields ratios between them in the range of 0.15 to 0.60. These values can be used as a coefficient in the Pit Flow analytical solution to produce reasonable estimates of in-flow even when there are significant differences from the idealized conditions implicit in its application.

Much of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Host producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC)operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectfully. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept Iles, Quebec.

The continuous flow, horizontal drum blender has dynamic properties which may be described by the same type of equations which often arise in electrical filter analysis. Furthermore, the equations may be readily solved by the same techniques used in electrical control analysis. For this reason the blender model developed is termed an "Electric Analog", although strictly speaking it is a mathematical model. Presentation of the dynamic performance of the blender as an electrical (or mathematical) model is desirable for several reasons. The model can be of assistance in correlating performance data with equipment design parameters. The model 'can be used with other process equipment models for simulation of an entire plant operation or in stability studies. In addition, the model may be useful in providing insight into the actual blending mechanism, or it may suggest a similar method of analysis for other closely allied equipment.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. Positions of the pulp level (pulp froth interface) and feed entry are presented as a percentage of column height (as measured from the face of the air sparser). J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point O travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex '85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73 -83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4600 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (la in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the afore- mentioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf -Forschungshefle, 1984, NO. 5, pp. 219-223. The "Hormite Group" was proposed for palygorskite (attapulgite) and sepiolite for their complex magnesium silicate composition and elongate crystals (Martin-Vivaldi and Robertson, 1971). These minerals occur in close association with each other and more complex structural variations may exist (Bailey, 1972). In 1862 Savchenkov used the name palygorskite to describe a mineral from the Palygorsk locality (Hay, 1975), near the Ural Mountains. Ovecharenko and Kukovsky (1984) mention that when mountain leather deposits were prospected in the Palygorsk Division mine it was assumed this unusual mineral was a variety of asbestos. Early mineralogists used the terms "mountain cork" or "mountain leather" when referring to palygorskite. Robertson (1986) mentions that it appears palygorskite was known since Theophrastus&apos; time, ca. 314 BC. J. de Lapparent used "attapulgite" for clays from Attapulgus, GA, and Mormoiron, France, because he thought them different from palygorskite, but the two types were proved to be the same (Bailey et al., 1971). The name attapulgite is still used for the Florida and Georgia deposits when the crystal length to diameter ratio does not exceed 10:1(Merkl, 1989). Georgia palygorskite clays are of much shorter length compared to classic palygorskite. In 1847 Glocker first used the name sepiolite which was called "Meerschaum" by Werner (1788) and Hauy (1801) namedit "Ecume de Mer." Brochant (1802) described low density and white magnesium silicates adding the name Talcum Plasticum and Ecume de Mer. In the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district palygorskite (attapulgite) commonly occurs in two distinct forms referred to as short length palygorskite (Meigs Member) and long length palygorskite (Dogtown Member) (Merkl, 1989). Long length palygorskite crystals (> 10 pm) are rarely observed in the Meigs and Dogtown Members, but when present are in association with dolomite crystals. The short length form is usually less than 2 pm in length and has a low magnesium content whereas the long length form has a high magnesium content and a length greater than 2 pm. The distinctions in morphology are not only important because of the relationship to the origin of the deposits, but also in relation to activity in causing membranolytic activity related to data on palygorskite samples from 9 locations ranging from relatively inert to active in work reported by Nolan et al. (1989). The > 10 pm lengths amounted to only 51 of 17,401 fibers sized. The shortest lengths (< 0.5 pm) were relatively inert. This study pointed out that surface activity, morphology, and chemical differences may be distinctly different within the definition of palygorskite, or for that matter for any individual mineral so that health and other properties must be measured because the name alone does not necessarily indicate uniformity. Palygorskite (attapulgite) fuller&apos;s earth was first sold for drilling mud in 1941. The market for this use expanded slowly and has maintained a level of 7 to 10% of the total US production during the last few years. Most of the fuller&apos;s earth sold for drilling mud comes from the southern part of the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district of Georgia and Florida. Palygorskite clays produced in this area are superior to most other fuller&apos;s earth for mud used in drilling salt formations, but because of high water loss, they are inferior to bentonite where the rocks drilled contain no saltwater. According to Oulton (1965), more than 90 different grades of fuller&apos;s earth are produced. Some of these grades are used for pharmaceuticals designed to absorb toxins, bacteria, and alkaloids; for treatment of dysentery; for purifying water and dry cleaning fluids, dry cleaning powders and granules; for the manufacture of NCR (no carbon required) multiple copy paper; for the manufacture of wallpaper; and as extenders or fillers for plastic, paint, and putty. Fuller&apos;s earth mined near Ellenton, FL, was used for making lightweight aggregates for the construction of concrete barges during World War I1 (Calver, 1957). Still other uses of fuller&apos;s earth and its suitability for uses in new products are outlined by Haden, Jr., and Schwint (1967), Haden, Jr., (1972), and Haas (1970). One special use of fuller&apos;s earth is as a carrier of platinum catalysts that are made in the United Kingdom from sepiolite clays mined in Spain. Other uses of sepiolite fuller&apos;s earth (Chambers, 1959) are similar to those of the palygorskite (attapulgite) type mined in the United States.

INTRODUCTION The Chimney Creek Gold Mine (Gold Fields Operating Co. - Chimney Creek) is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. The operation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corporation, the North American branch of Consolidated Gold Fields PLC, London, England. The plant started up in November, 1987, less than three years after discovery of the orebody and three months ahead of schedule. Ore is mined in an open pit and is processed by combined dump leaching and milling techniques for gold and silver recovery. The mine is set to produce approximately 150.000 ounces of gold and 50,000 ounces of silver per year over a 12 year life at current reserve estimations. The mine was designed and constructed at a cost of $79.3 million with engineering and construction services provided by Davy McKee Corporation, San Ramon, California. Key Gold Fields operating staff were involved in the design of the facility from the start of the project: The Mine Manager, Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist were all involved full time on the project within 5 months of the first ore discovery. Emphasis was directed at optimizing operating efficiency and in particular minimizing labor costs in the plant. It was recognized that a high level of instrumentation and control would be required to achieve this. The risk associated with the instrumentation and control systems implemented was to be minimized by using equipment and systems that had been proven in industry while utilizing the most cost effective, state-of-the-art technology available. The reliability of the overall control system was considered to be critical in view of the cost of downtime associated with the gold extraction plant. BRIEF PROCESS DESCRIPTION The dump leaching process treats approximately 1.2 million tons per year of low grade ore at an average grade of 0.035 oz/ton. Run of mine material is dumped on a lined leach pad and weak cyanide solution is applied by drip irrigation. Pregnant solution run off is pumped to carbon columns in the milling plant for gold recovery and the barren solution returned to the dump leach circuit. Average gold recovery is 60%. This process has little instrumentation and control associated with it. The milling operation treats 700,000 tons annually of higher grade ore (0.200 oz/ton initially, dropping to an average of 0.135 oz/ton after first two years). Recovery is directly related to head grade (fixed tail assay effect) and currently averages 96%. A single pass through a jaw crusher reduces run of mine ore to minus 12 inches. The ore is stockpiled and reclaimed by loader for grinding in a two-stage milling circuit consisting of a SAG mill and ball mill, the latter in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyanide and lime are added into the SAG mill to start dissolution of gold as early as possible in the circuit. The ground product leaves the milling circuit at approximately 78% minus 200 mesh and is fed to an unique "double thickener" leaching-recovery circuit. This circuit has been discussed in detail in a paper by J. G. Mansanti et a1 (1). Two thickeners are arranged in counter- current configuration with three leach tanks. Overflow solution from the first thickener is treated by carbon-in-columns (CIC) for gold recovery with 85% of the soluble gold recovered onto this carbon. Underflow slurry from this thickener is pumped to the leach tanks, with a total retention time of 12 hours, and then gravitates to the No. 2 thickener. Overflow solution from the second thickener is used as a wash in the first thickener. Underflow slurry from the second thickener is treated in a carbon-in- pulp (CIP) scavenging circuit to recover the remaining 15% dissolved gold. Gold-loaded carbon from both the dump leach and milling circuits is stripped in batches using the Zadra hot caustic- cyanide elution process. Gold (and silver) is recovered from the hot strip solution by precipitation with zinc dust and the product recovered on Funda pressure filters. The precipitate is retorted to remove any mercury and then smelted into buttons. The buttons (approximately 80% gold, 15% silver) are shipped to an independent refiner in Salt Lake City, Utah, for further treatment.

Sodium sulfate is an important industrial chemical. As recently as ten years ago it was produced and consumed in the United States in quantities exceeding 1 Mtpy. Since then, both its production and use have declined; however, approximately half the production still comes from natural sources. [Fig. 1] illustrates the history of production of natural sodium sulfate in the United States. Production of natural sodium sulfate from various types of deposits is the main source of this chemical in Canada and Mexico, and probably in Argentina, Chile, Iran, Spain, and the Russian Republics. MINERALOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Sodium sulfate is widespread in occurrence and is a common constituent of many mineral waters, as well as seawater. Atmospheric precipitation contains sulfate; it is one of the major dissolved constituents of rain and snow (Davis and Dewiest, 1966). Many of the saline lakes throughout the world contain varying amounts of sodium sulfate. Because sodium is usually the dominant cation, some workers make an anionic distinction, referring to lakes containing predominantly sulfate as bitter lakes and those containing predominantly carbonate as alkali or soda lakes (Bateman, 1950). Sodium sulfate in its natural form is found in two principal minerals, mirabilite and thenardite. Mirabilite, the hydrous form, is commonly called Glauber&apos;s salt. It was discovered by the German chemist, J.R. Glauber (1603-1668), who derived its name from the Latin, sal mirabile, meaning wonderful salt. Thenardite, the anhydrous variety, was named for the French chemist, Louis Jacques Thenard (1777-1857) of the University of Paris (Mitchell, 1979). The largest quantities occur in the form of mirabilite. Sodium sulfate is found in varying degrees of purity, from theoretically pure efflorescent crystals of mirabilite to combinations and admixtures of other salts and impurities. It is a common constituent of some brines; from this source much is extracted commercially. Sodium sulfate also is found in compounds, such as the minerals glauberite, the double salt of anhydrous sodium and calcium sulfate, bloedite, the hydrous double-salt of sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate, and burkeite, the anhydrous double-salt of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate. Over 40 minerals contain sodium sulfate in varying proportions; many are of special interest because of their frequent occurrence. Table 1 lists some sodium-sulfate bearing minerals. The reader is referred to other publications (Cole, 1926, Dana, 1932, Grabau, 1920, and Dietrich, 1969) for descriptions of these minerals. Only mirabilite and thenardite will be described herein. Mirabilite Na$04.10H20, contains 55.9% water of crystallization. It is noted for its efflorescence or spontaneous loss of water. On dehydration it changes to the anhydrous form, Na2S0,. Mirabilite is an opaque to colorless, water-soluble mineral that tastes first cool, then slightly bitter. It has a specific gravity of 1.48. It frequently forms as efflorescent, needlelike monoclinic crystals, but generally is found in the massive form. Thenardite, the anhydrous mineral, Na2S04, contains 43.68% Na20 and 56.32% SO3. It ranges from colorless to white and may be tinted shades of gray or brown. It is a water soluble mineral with a slightly salty taste. Its specific gravity (2.67) and hardness (2.5 to 3) exceed those of mirabilite. It commonly occurs in the massive form without visible crystals. Its crystals are frequently tabular pyramids of the orthorhombic system. Sodium sulfate also occurs as a heptahydrate, containing seven molecules of water, but this is unstable and has not been found in the natural environment. The solubility of sodium sulfate has an important effect on the crystallization of the salt in nature, as well as in its production. Its solubility in water generally increases as a nonlinear function of temperature. Below 1.2°C, ice and mirabilite form. As the temperature is increased above O°C, increasing amounts of sodium sulfate become soluble. At 32.4°C, a transition point on the solubility curve is reached, as the decahydrate melts in its own water of crystallization and the anhydrous form crystallizes. With in- creasing temperatures, solubility decreases somewhat. The presence of other dissolved salts changes the transition temperature and solubility characteristics of sodium sulfate.

At this time in the history of engineering and construction, cost indexes give weekly evidence of the sharply rising costs of labor and materials. Paralleling the rise in construction costs are the costs of plant maintenance. Automation of the modern industrial plant has permitted a substantial reduction in the total number of employees required for plant operation. Of this reduced total, however, up to one-half of the employees may be engaged in plant maintenance. Management&apos;s decision to risk investment capital for a pro- posed plant or improvement is increasingly dependent upon the engineer&apos;s ingenuity in designing plant systems and structures which will require a minimum of materials and labor for manufacture, installation, and operation and which will be maintenance-free to a maximum degree. This paper concerns itself with the structural elements of bulk material handling systems in which the foregoing factors influenced the design to a considerable extent.

The Tripoli deposits in the southwest corner of Missouri In Newton County and the northeast corner of Oklahoma in Ottawa County, located in the vicinity of Seneca, Missouri, contains an unusual and peculiar form of silica which has not been found any other place in the world. Its outstanding characteristic is the physical structure of the individual particle, The particle structure of the Missouri-Oklahoma type Tripoli accounts for its market. It is a soft, friable, porous, double-refracting silica of the chalcedony variety, The particle is porous, has a fibrous structure, no sharp edges or comers, ad an average size of less than .01 millimeter, It varies from 90 to 98 per cent Si02 with less than 1 per cent free silica in the form of quartz, 24; has ignition loss of 1 per cent and fractional percentages of iron, alumina, lime, etc.

The WTBAL computer program for evaluating material balances for minerals processing flowsheets was developed at the MRC and has been in general use for a number of years. This paper reports on two enhancements to the basic MTBAL routine. The original program accounted for errors in the process measurements and used estimates of measurement variability to calculate stream weights. Unfortunately, the estimate of measurement variability was fixed over all streams. In the enhanced version of MATBAL, named IMTBL, the program equations and their solution procedure have been modified to allow the estimated variability in a process measurement to vary from stream to stream. The .second enhancement involves making MTBAL interactive. As such, the user now prescribes his information in an easy-to-use fashion in a conversational mode via a terminal. Finally, an assessment of the feasibility of implementing IMTBL on microcomputer systems will also be reported.

Hiring trends in the construction materials industry have remained steady through the years, with some seasonal and geographical variances. However, after several years of a depressed market, the base metals industry has begun to actively hire only over the past two years, due to the continued strength in the prices of copper, lead, zinc, molybenum, etc. The expanding precious metals industry, which for the most part escaped the depressed markets of the mid-1980s, actually preceded the base metal companies in hiring of engineers and operations personnel. The coal industry has not seemed to rebound much from the cutbacks of the early 1980s. And the uranium industry, which began its decline a year or two earlier than the other mineral industries, has remained nearly nonexistent in the United States. In nearly all of the mineral industries, new hires have been mostly in the engineering and operations areas, not exploration.

Accidents that resulted in 16 deaths in three West Virginia coal mines, two in Kentucky and one in Utah have government and industry re-evaluating current safety regulations. Even though U.S. mines continue to improve on their safety records, the deaths reminded the industry and state and federal agencies that mining remains a dangerous business. Even so, data from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) show that new technologies and a highly trained workforce has allowed the nation’s coal mines to increase production while providing safer workplaces. Since 1970, coal production at U.S. mines has increased by about 83 percent. During the same period, fatal injuries have fallen by 92 percent. And more than half of the U.S. coal mines operate each year without a lost-time injury. In 2005, there were 22 deaths in U.S. mines, a record low.

At the Duisburger Kupferhütte plant in Germany, pyrite cinder is collected from the sulfuric acid manufacturers in that country and processed to recover the nonferrous metals contained in the cinder, before charging it to the blast furnace for iron recovery. A typical analysis of the cinder is given in Table 9-1. The pyrite cinder is mixed with NaCl and treated continuously in a multiple hearth furnace. The evolved gases are scrubbed with water to form a weak acid which is used for the leaching process. Each batch requires about 2 days for leaching. The concentrated leaching solution obtained in the first 15 to 20 hr is sent for copper recovery, while that subsequently obtained, being poor ill metal content, is recycled. The residue, called purple ore, now a high-grade iron ore (61-63 % Fe); is sintered and delivered to the blast furnace.

The results of using a simple analytical solution and a relatively complex numerical model to estimate ground water inflow to an open pit mine are compared. The analytical solution assumes lateral, radial flow to a fully penetrating pit in an idealized confined aquifer, whereas the numerical model simulates fully three-dimensional flow to a partially penetrating pit from a water table aquifer. The latter is a more realistic simulation of the problem, but the former method is significantly easier to use. Comparison of the results obtained with the two methods for some typical hydrogeologic conditions encountered in mining yields ratios between them in the range of 0.2 to 0.6. These values can be used as a coefficient in the Pit Flow analytical solution to produce reasonable estimates of in-flow even when there are significant differences from the idealized conditions implicit in its application.

Injecting water under pressure to wet the coalbed in advance of mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Owing to economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is currently limited to the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72 longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob gas boreholes. Computer coalbed reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed.

The use of selected iron complexing agents in preventing or ameliorating acid mine drainage was investigated. The experiments were conducted in weathering columns using refuse samples from a coal cleaning plant. It was observed that the treatment with iron complexing agents significantly altered the rate of oxidation. Some of the reagents tested reduced the rate of oxidation whereas the others even enhanced it. The results showed that a commercial reagent containing oleyl imidazoline was most effective in retarding the oxidation rate. In addition, a simple treatment with this reagent substantially decreased the rate of oxidation of pyrite in a column that was generating acid at a high rate. The effect of this reagent on the surface properties of pyrite was studied by cyclic voltammetry and zeta potential measurements. The decrease in the rate of oxidation resulted from suppression of both anodic and cathodic reactions at the surface of pyrite.

Specialty silica materials, as defined in this chapter, are rocks that consist predominantly of silica (SiO2) and are produced as chunks, round pebbles, and sawed or trimmed blocks and other shapes for nonconstruction applications. The rock types include quartzite, sandstone, novaculite, flint, chert, and vein quartz. Other terms used commercially include jasper, silex, lascas, and rock crystal. In its publication, Minerals Yearbook, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) reports the production and consumption of some specialty silica materials under several headings. Quartzite, sandstone, and novaculite used in abrasive applications are addressed by the USBM under Abrasive Materials. Dr. Emrick, honored guests, distinguished speakers, ladies and gentlemen, I am Langan Swent, Vice President for Environmental Affairs and Occupational Safety and Health, of Homestake Mining Company. Today, I appear on behalf of the American Mining Congress, as chairman of its uranium mine health subcommittee. The American Mining Congress is a trade association of several hundred members, which include the producers of a large proportion of the nation&apos;s uranium. I&apos;ve been asked to make a statement of principles for the uranium industry. There are two types of principles that apply to industry in general, and specifically to the uranium industry. Some have external origins and apply regardless of what industry does or thinks. Others are generated by industry itself and serve as goals for the industry. I&apos;ll discuss some of each type. I&apos;ll limit my statement to those principles related to the subject of this conference--radiation hazards in mining. I won&apos;t take your time trying to explain some of the unrelated principles that we must all contend with, such as Parkinson&apos;s Laws, Murphy&apos;s Law, and the Peter Principle. First and foremost, industry has a sincere interest in the well-being and health of its employees. There are two basic reasons for this. One is a basic respect for human lives, especially those of people we see and work with every day. No one in management wants to carry the lifelong burden of blame for a life lost due to poor working conditions. Most uranium and other mining is done in small communities. Production workers, maintenance workers, service workers, shift bosses, foremen, superintendents and managers all live in the same community. They attend the same churches. They serve together in civic activities. Their children go to the same schools. If one employee in such a community loses his life due to poor working conditions, those remaining know in a daily and intimate way the resulting personal tragedy, usually of a bereaved widow and fatherless children. This sad experience makes the community, including industry management, intensely sensitive to the need for maintaining good working conditions in the mines. But what about the segment of industry that does not live in the mining communities? Corporate and owner&apos;s offices are frequently hundreds of miles from the communities where the mining takes place. Many of these people are not personally acquainted with the workers, and there are few close personal ties between the two communities. The distant staff are, however, still human beings and motivated by the same basic human respect for life. Mr. Manuel Gomez of MSHA and a member of the planning committee for this conference summed this point up expressively when he told me: "No one group has a corner on compassion." In addition to compassion, there is another factor. In both communities the basic assignment to everyone is to produce profits. In carrying out this assignment, supervisory and management people are acutely aware of the high cost of illnesses and accidents. Their objective of maximizing profits is advanced significantly by minimizing illnesses and accidents at the mines. A business that has illnesses and accidents generally suffers from poor employee morale and high employee turnover, both of which detract from profits. Next, I would like to talk about what industry has done in the field that is the subject of this conference. We have worked at all sorts of methods to reduce exposure of employees since the exposure standards were first introduced and then lowered. Other speakers will go into details of technology, and I&apos;ll simply comment on exposure results. These are best shown in Table 1. The table shows the average WL to which miners in U.S. underground uranium mines have been exposed since 1937 through 1980. The trend of decreasing radon daughter concentrations throughout the period is obvious. Figure 1 presents this data graphically and shows the trend at a glance. This record begins in 1937 when uranium, as such, really wasn&apos;t being mined or sought. The concentrations given by the U.S. Public Health Service were for a few small vanadium mines which carried uranium as a by-product. A few years later, when the Manhattan project to develop the atomic bomb was begun, these mines became the first U.S. uranium mines and the vanadium became the by-product! The radiation hazard then also received attention and the average concentrations began to decline. As knowledge of the reality of the hazard spread, conditions improved. The search for uranium in the U.S. turned up new and larger ore bodies that had to be mined by large underground mines. These mines involved ventilation planning from the beginning, and when they came into production in the late 1950&apos;s they lowered the average concentrations greatly. Then in 1960 the American Standards Association adopted a standard setting 1 working level as a satisfactory condition, and several action levels up to 10WL, at which point removal of people from exposure was called for. As a result of the uranium producing states governors&apos; conference in December 1960, state mine inspection agencies, in the early 1960&apos;s, began to adopt and enforce the ASA standards. As a result, average concentrations again declined. In 1967, the Federal Radiation Council recommended an annual limitation of 12 WLM per individual.
