Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented in this paper.

Assessing the occurrence of natural ground-water recharge at mine and mill waste disposal sites may be crucial to addressing regulatory agency concerns regarding the potential impact of waste seepage on ground-water resources. Recharge has been shown to occur even in semi-arid areas where annual lake evaporation exceeds precipitation. Permanent storage of waste seepage in the unsaturated zone is not to be expected if recharge occurs under natural conditions. Establishing the direction and rate of fluid movement in the vadose zone by field measurements is an important element that should be included in the site selection process.

Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy carried out in real time has been applied to identify surface species formed during gold leaching in chloride and thiosulfate media. Chloride ion is adsorbed prior to the gold dissolution potential, but its coverage is significantly diminished at the beginning of leaching. A gold chloride band is again observed when dissolution is rapid, together with bands characteristic of AuC14- ions in solution. With thiosulfate, a thin gold sulfide layer is formed slowly in the potential region where leaching occurs. At higher potentials, thiosulfate is oxidized to sulfur and sulfate, both products being identified by Raman spectroscopy.

The goal of public policies is to connect desired ends with practical means toward their achievement. How the desired ends are determined, and whose goals and objectives they incorporate, depends upon the culture and political system of the country in question. With few exceptions, policies change over time to reflect changed perspectives and understanding of the world around us. This is true regardless of the policy area in question. Thus, how societies view and manage their mineral resources has evolved in response to public attitudes, societal needs, economic circumstance, cultural perspectives, political orientations, technological advancements, and geological knowledge. In this paper we examine how the scope of concern has changed for mineral policy. We then review the overarching issues that have in recent years been considered essential components of mineral policies. We point out how neoclassical microeconomics has influenced recent policy design. We then use a market flow diagram to illustrate how policies can be focused at specific market issues. We next discuss mineral resources in the context of sustainable development. We identify issues that become relevant when the frame of reference is enlarged beyond ensuring supply and capturing economic rent. We show that policy based solely on neoclassical economics may not be able to effectively incorporate these issues.

A petrographic approach to studying the organic matter in ore deposits is advantageous in that direct observation of sample heterogeneity can be made, organic constituents (macerals) can be identified, and valuable information about the geological history of the sample (such as thermal history, oxidation, and reworking) can be obtained. Thermally immature bitumens are compositionally and structurally heterogeneous, and optically isotropic. The end product of thermal alteration, graphite, is compositionally and structurally homogeneous, and optically an isotropic. One route by which thermally immature bitumens can approach the graphite structure Is by an aromatic intermediate phase, termed mesophase. The development of optical anisotropy and a thermal mesophase has been observed In several high temperature deposits. Textures in bitumens are described from the thermally-altered Mississippi Valley-Type deposit at Nanisivik (Northwest Territories), the silver-vein deposit at Kongsberg (Norway), and the gold deposit at Carlin (Nevada). Textural evidence for multiple generations of bitumens, supportive of a pulsing model for incoming brines, is shown. Petrological evidence for the introduction of bitumens as an immiscible phase or possibly as micelles is shown in the Carlin and Kongsberg deposits.

Project engineering and development is a process of optimisation of capital, operating and financial costs, and extraction rates in the light of current and forecast economic conditions for the sale of the product. The aim of the process is to maximize financial returns to the sponsors (project owners) within many often conflicting constraints. Thus, the sponsor's engineering and financial staff have a common goal, with performance measured in financial terms. Consequently, each group must be aware of, and responsive to, the constraints imposed upon the other. For financial staff, the increasing size and complexity, and escalating capital costs of new ventures have required them to seek finance in larger amounts, and by non-traditional methods. In addition, senior management are requiring indications of the availability of finance as a pre-requisite to a decision to commence project development activities.

An ore reserve block model is the basis for various decisions in mine development and production. The block model is initially built using the information from the drillhole data only. Once the mine is put in operation, the information from the blasthole data becomes available. Since the spacing of the blastholes are much closer than the exploration drillholes, the blasthole data gathered from the mine over the years become quite extensive containing valuable information about the deposit. In practice, the information from the blastholes is the basis of determining the ore and waste boundaries between and within mining blocks. In an ore reserve model, the valuation of blocks on and close to the pit face can obviously be improved by using blasthole data from neat by drilled and mined-out blocks in addition to using the widely spaced drillhole data. The ideal basis on which to integrate blasthole and drillhole data is to use cokriging.

The Biological Oxidation (BlOX®) Process for the treatment of refractory gold ores was commercialized in 1988. During the last decade, the technology has developed into a mature, commercially viable process, with five additional operations commissioned, including operations at Sao Bento in Brazil, Harbour Lights and Wiluna in Australia, Ashanti in Ghana and Tamboraque in Peru. With ongoing development, the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the process have both improved, making it an attractive alternative to conventional refractory treatment processes such as roasting and pressure oxidation. The bacterial culture is robust and can withstand the normal fluctuations experienced on an operating plant. The plants are simple to operate, making it ideal for remote areas. The scale-up potential of the process has been proven, and it can be applied to large refractory ore bodies. The process is environmentally friendly. Neutralization of plant effluents produces precipitates that comply with the most stringent environmental regulations.

The Coal Mining Section of the National Safety Council has selected hand and finger injuries of coal miners as a major topic for safety policy analysis [Tinney, 19851. So that facts about hand and finger injuries can be used to guide the Committee's work and the work of policy-makers, we present in this paper detailed analyses of the following factors related to hand and finger injuries received by coal miners between 1975 and 1983: occupations of the injured miners; activities of the miners when injured; machines involved; objects, substances, exposures, or bodily motions that produced or inflicted the injuries; principal physical characteristics of injuries; and events directly resulting in the injuries. We analyze hand injuries for underground and surface mines separately because of the remarkably different production methods and hazards evident in these two operating environments. We do not, however, provide information about hand and finger injuries that occurred in surface operations at underground sites (such as yards, shops, or tipples), auger mining operations, culm banks, dredging operations, mill or preparation plants, offices, or laboratories. The most comprehensive information about the safety of coal mining in the United States is assembled by the Health and Safety Analysis Center (HSAC) of the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the United States Department of Labor. Mine operators in the United States report to HSAC all injuries as required under Part 50, Title 30, of the Code of Federal Regulations (mandated by Section 103 the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977, Public Law 95-164). These regulations stipulate that injuries must be reported within ten days of their occurrence on a United States government data collection form, Mine Accident, Illness and Injury Report (MSHA Form 7000-1). HSAC maintains these data primarily to produce federally-mandated reports. Sound Transit’s ST3 program will add 62 miles of light rail to the Puget Sound area, including connections to the neighborhoods of West Seattle and Ballard. These connections include considerations for both elevated and tunnel alternatives in West Seattle and Ballard, as well as a new tunnel and six underground stations in the densely developed downtown Seattle. This paper describes the conditions and constraints along the corridor, and the latest development in the ongoing process to plan the underground guideways and stations.

In operation of column flotation of fine coal, the smaller bubbles are required to effectively recovery of fine hydrophobic particles. However, smaller size bubbles alone does not ensure an efficient flotation for fine particles. The sufficient available bubble surface area per unit column are essential for effective column flotation. The experiments are conducted in a lab-scale column using two different bubble size distributions and three different particle size distributions for flotation of Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. The interaction between particle size, aeration rate, feed rate and wash water addition are examined in this investigation to establish the optimal operation conditions for flotation of fine coal. Despite of wide range of operation conditions used in this study, it is found that the experimental data fall in a single characteristic recovery-ash curve for a given bubble size distribution and particle size distribution. The major parameters affect the flotation performance points along -the characteristic recovery-ash curves are aeration rate/frother dosage, feed rate and wash water rate-.

The objective of the fines flotation step in a coal preparation plant is to maximize coal recovery subject to a constraint on the allowable ash in the concentrate. The objective is achieved when the incremental ash is driven to a target value determined by an economic constraint. In this paper, a phenomenological flotation model and ash analyzer combination are identified that allow the development of a soft sensor for incremental ash and subsequently a model-based strategy which manipulates key flotation variables to achieve the control objective. A combination of plant tests and computer simulations are presented to evaluate control-system performance in one operation.

A demonstration scale, subsurface flow anaerobic wetland was built to treat zinc and other metals in surface drainage near the historic mining center of Butte, MT. Based on three years of continuous monitoring (1996-1998), copper and cadmium were effectively removed year-round, but attenuation of dissolved zinc was dependent on hydraulic residence time (HRT) and bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) rates. BSR rates decreased in winter months, as did HRT due to the development of thick frost zones in the substrates. An additional problem was the inability of the wetland substrate to completely filter out fine-grained particles of ZnS forming in the anaerobic cells.

Introduction Millions of tons of coal are shipped by rail each year in the US. Loading those trains efficiently is a topic being studied by coal producers and railroads. Alternatives range from volumetric loadouts to systems that weigh the product, using either belt conveyor scales, track scales, or weighbins. Each system has its proper application and each has pros and cons, depending on the volume, nature, and layout of the specific loading facility. In recent years, a batch weighing system has been developed that offers significant benefits to higher volume operations shipping by a unit train. The Unitrain Loadout System (ULS) features a precision electronic batch weighing system married to a mechanical loadout system by a microprocessor-based digital control system. A batch weighing loadout could be designed using analog electronics or even a mechanical weighbin. But it is the adaption and use of a microprocessor that provides the primary benefits of a unit train loading facility. Those benefits are accurate weight determination, optimum car use, overload prevention, speed in loading, optimum labor use, and documentation of the loading process. Unitrain History The first ULS was erected for iron ore applications in Canada during the 1960s. The first domestic system on coal was installed at Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co.'s McKinley mine at Gallup, NM, in 1978. At present, there are more than 20 Unitrain Loadout Systems in operation worldwide. They are loading minerals, concentrates, and coal. Eleven systems are presently in service or under construction in the US. In the last several years, a number of comparable systems have also been installed. As a result, the concept has been well proven and is now commercially available from several sources. Unitrain Operation The basic operation of a ULS involves loading a unit train with individually weighed batches of coal while it moves slowly under a loadout tower. Typical coal systems are designed to load at rates of 2.7 to 6.3 kt/h (3000 to 7000 stph). The contents of each car can be accurately weighed. This meets the requirements of the National Bureau of Standards Handbook No. 44 for static weighing. Also, cars can be loaded within very close tolerances. This optimizes railcar usage and prevents overloads. Principal components of the loadout system are the main feed conveyor, the surge bin, surge bin gates, weighbin, weighbin gate, flood loading chute, control room, calibration weights, and hydraulic and electrical systems (Fig. 1). Main feed conveyor: Coal is delivered from a storage area by the main feed conveyor. The conveyor fills the surge bin. It should be capable of conveying coal at the same rate at which it is being loaded. Usually the feed conveyor is equipped with a conveyor scale that can display rate in the control room and control feed to the belt. The surge bin will typically store 227 to 272 t (250 to 300 st) of coal. If the loadout is installed in an over-the-track silo, there is no need for a surge bin. Four double-bladed, hydraulically actuated gates are incorporated into the bottom of the surge bin. These gates open to fill the weighbin. Automatic pre-act points are selected by the control system. They shut these gates as the desired weight is approached. The final amount of coal is added by a single gate that closes. This results in a weighed batch of coal within ± 0.5% of the selected optimum load per railcar. Thus, if loading 91-t (100-st) capacity cars, the system is set to batch up 90.2 t (99.5 st) batches. An extensive series of linear and rotary cutting tests were run in soft and medium strength rocks at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines to investigate the possibility of very high speed mechanical excavation for tunnel, raise, and shaft boring. The results of these tests demonstrate that cutter penetrations of 38.1 mm (1.5 inch) and cut spacings up to 228.6 mm (9 inch) are possible in such rock without exceeding the bearing capabilities of the cutters. It was also demonstrated in vertical boring tests that continuous excavation rates up to 38.1 m/hr (125 ft/hr) can be achieved with state-of-the-art technology provided sufficient thrust and torque is available. A predictor model for soft rocks was also developed using the test data. Analysis of this model shows that the errors between the predicted and observed cutter normal loads appear to be independent of cutter diameter, tip width, cut spacing, and depth of penetration. This suggests that the structure of the model is correct with respect to these variables. An analysis of the coefficients in the model was also made and a correlation found between the principal coefficient and Unconfined Compressive Strength. The second coefficient in the model was found to be similar in magnitude to rock properties such as Brazilian Tensile Strength, Shear Strength and Point Load Index.

The topic of this paper is, "Current Trends in Related Industries and Their Influence on Electric Shovel Design and Size". Before getting into the major items, it is well to point out that this text will deal with loading shovels primarily, since their application is almost universal in major open pit mining operations throughout the world. Related industries influence our design in many ways. For the sake of simplicity, these industries will be broken down into two major categories. The first category to be discussed will include industries that will indirectly influence design and size, while the second category will include industries whose products can directly be incorporated by the engineer in the design of shovels.

Ensuring effective management of contractual processes is essential for maintaining profitability and operational efficiency in mining. However, due to limited capacity and resources, sites often struggle to manage these processes effectively, leading to oversights and financial losses. Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer promising solutions to these challenges. Large Language Models (LLMs), like those powering ChatGPT, now enable machines to understand unstructured data like contracts. These can therefore be applied to address these challenges by taking some of the heavy lifting off of humans. In this paper, we analyze a real-world case study of the application of LLM tools for preventing a $400k contractual issue on an underground gold mine in Western Australia. We provide a gap analysis of the failure modes in existing processes that led to the issue. We then describe the application of LLM tools to flag it early and facilitate a collaborative solution between the operator and the supplier. This includes a comparative analysis of base case vs LLM case to evaluate the impact on project cost and time. Finally, we discuss how the integration of AI can foster improved relationships between clients and contractors across a broad range of potential contractual applications, allowing the time required for collaborative and proactive problem solving.

There has been a significant progress in the use of mathematical modeling and simulation in the minerals industry in the last decade. Process models have moved from academic world to important industrial tools. This paper reviews the status of mineral processing simulators and recent progress in simulator development and applications is discussed. The simulation for process design and optimisation is now an established technique, as evidenced by its increasing use of practising engineers through commercially available simulator software. The paper presents a systematic approach to the process study procedure for the control system development, clarified by practical case examples calculated by SimCon - a novel steady-state simulator for mineral processes. Examples of the application of SimCon in drawing flowsheets, calculating mass balances and making simulations for grinding and flotation processes are presented. At the end of the paper, the state-of-the-art and the future of computer-aided pro- cess study at mineral processing plants is discussed. The research is carried out to investigate the flow mechanics and effectiveness of face ventilation using induction fans, as an effort to provide a more efficient alternative to conventional auxiliary duct or brattice ventilation systems. The induction effects and plume longevity of fluid jets are being studied with the help of a plexi-glass model, using water as the fluid medium and creating a system that is dynamically similar to the flow in mine headings. This scaled model represents a typical 1.5m x 6m x 25m heading connecting to a crosscut. Reynolds Number criteria are used to obtain dynamic similarity of the flow in the designed model to simulate real mining conditions. The role of various parameters such as nozzle position in three dimensions, airway roughness, nozzle geometry, and flow rate in the jet are studied. During the laboratory tests, flow visualization techniques, coupled with still and video photography, were employed to identify the flow patterns. The results indicate that in typical coal mine headings, jet fans can produce effective face ventilation for distance up to 30 meters.

Universities and colleges in three countries, Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish and/or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this goal, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include 1) Tasmania, Australia, 2) British Columbia, Canada and 3) Alaska, United States. Over one hundred mineral industry organizations cooperated in the study by providing information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered has been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration, including, but not limited to, geological skills, geochemical skills, environmental skills and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model has been developed for the three levels of training. The depth of each level of education and the training objectives for the work force at each level will be discussed.
