Mining, perhaps more than other industries, has been under pressure to achieve higher productivity, while reducing costs and environmental impacts. This has encouraged a move toward large-scale operations and greater integration and automation of systems. Mechanization is being used increasingly to raise production and reduce labor requirements. Yet, while transportation, ventilation and other activities have benefited from this trend, mechanization of rock excavation (for development and production) has lagged. The switch to a mechanized excavation system can be complex, requiring a thorough study of operational and cost benefits to be successful. To justify the high capital cost of mechanical mining equipment, production rates and the true costs of machine mining must be accurately estimated. To evaluate the cost effectiveness of mechanical mining for a particular operation, the total production cost (capital and operating) must first be estimated. This requires a reliable estimate of the production rate of the candidate mechanical excavator. Previously, the variable nature of rock caused performance prediction of these machines to be more an art than a science. Additionally, some of these machines are highly sensitive to operator skill. They all depend on their backup systems. The effects of interaction with the overall mining operation can be difficult to forecast. And a new system must surmount psychological barriers before it can become truly operational.

Sampling has evolved at two large underground limestone mines as conditions and product requirements have grown tougher over 100 years of mine life, requiring innovative techniques to insure delivery of high purity limestone. Sampling insures delivery of consistent product to customers at the lowest possible cost. Statistical considerations have evolved from simple data collection to predictive and process capability analysis. Sample methods include borehole samples, face (using a proprietary face-sampling device), and total plant feed automatic, process, and final product sampling. Lessons learned, while keeping costs at historically low numbers, include the importance of geological models, exploration drilling density, face sampling, and blending of ore.

Knowledge of in situ stress and natural fracture distribution at depth improves our ability to stimulate and produce low permeability reservoirs. The focus of this study is three closely spaced, 2.5 km deep vertical wells in the Piceance Basin of Colorado. The wells were completed through the tight lenticular and blanket gas sands of the Mesaverde Group. In situ stress directions and magnitudes were determined from hydraulic fracture tests and anelastic strain recovery measurements of oriented core. The distribution, orientation, and characteristics of natural fractures in the subsurface were determined from detailed observations of over 1300 m of core, of which 400 m was oriented. Stress measurements clearly show that horizontal stresses are strongly influenced by lithology. In a sandstone/shale sequence at a depth of about 2.0 km in situ stresses in sandstone formations are anisotropic, with the average ratios of the minimum and maximum horizontal stresses to the overburden stress being 0.82 and 0.96, respectively. In sharp contrast bounding shale formations are lithostatic. This stress contrast between sandstones and bounding shale formations could act as a barrier to hydraulic fracture propagation during stimulation and impede vertical fracture growth. Natural calcite-filled fractures are present in over 7 percent of the core, with several horizons having a much higher frequency of fractures. Fractures are found primarily in sandstone. The fractures have a strong preferred orientation of N 1060E[+]110, which is aligned with the maximum horizontal stress and direction of hydraulic fracture propagation. The interaction between a well developed fracture fabric and anisotropic stresses in sandstone formations produces a permeability anisotropy, with the maximum permeability aligned with the fracture fabric and maximum horizontal stress.

The White Pine Mine is the second-largest active underground copper mine in the United States, covering an area of approximately 13 square miles in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mine operator intends to initiate in-stope solution mining by circulating a solution of mine water, sulfuric acid, and ferric iron through rubblized ore and recovering copper from solution. As planned, the solution would be retired in the mined-out stopes following completion of solution mining activities. Investigations into the fate of the retired solution mining fluid indicate that the solution, through time, will change from an acidic, metal-rich solution to a near-neutral, reducing solution containing much lower concentrations of metals. Investigations include reaction path modeling (EQ3/6) and laboratory and in-mine experiments. The combination of neutralization and reduction will result in precipitation of most metals, primarily as metallic sulfates, chlorides, and sulfides.

Recent work by Haas has made available information on densities and vapor pressures of solutions of differing salinities at temperatures up to 330°C. From these data it is possible to predict the behavior of volcanic exhalations of various degrees of salinity as they approach the sea floor. Particular attention is devoted to solutions of 5.0 weight per cent NaCl and 20 weight per cent NaCl, two fluids that approximate quite closely the salinities of what Roedder termed: (1) normal hydrothermal fluids and (2) fluids typical of stratiform deposits of low-temperature conditions of origin. It is apparent that solutions above 220-230°C. cannot reach a sea floor on which the depth of water is 600 feet or less in the liquid state but will boil at some appreciable depth beneath the sea floor. Such boiling would result in the precipitation of all constituents of the ore fluids of significantly lower vapor pressure than water. The principal such constituent would be salt, and no sulfide deposits, the major constituent of which is salt are known. It follows, therefore, that ore fluids probably never get close to the sea floor of shallow seas at temperatures high enough to permit boiling. Ore fluids significantly above 230°C. can reach the sea floor in the fluid state only if the depth of the sea in the area. in question is well above 600 feet, for example, solutions at temperatures of ±300°C. reach the sea floor in the liquid state only if the depth of sea water is slightly over 3000 feet. Ore fluids reaching the sea floor at such depths may be the parents of such fluids as the Red and Salton Sea brines. On the basis of these data, the Cyprus and Kuroko deposits are discussed.

I feel very privileged to be added to the distinguished group that has received this award since the first recipient, Reno Sales, received it in 1954. If my research is correct, the last geologist to be honored was Bill Callahan in 1982. Perhaps the Awards Committee decided it was about time to select a geologist, and I became the beneficiary. Regarding the discovery of the Carlin ore body, it was the culmination of several studies - one going back as far as 1939 when a US Bureau of Mines engineer named W.O. Vanderberg recognized an unusual type of gold mineralization in sediments in northern Nevada. What was unusual was the fact that the gold was so fine that it would not concentrate in a pan. This, plus the study of the Roberts Mountain thrust by Ralph Roberts (1960) and conversations with Harry Bishop, manager of the Gold Acres Mine, pointed Alan Coope and me in the direction of the Lynn Window and, eventually, the Carlin discovery. There has been a great deal written about this discovery. I thought it would be interesting to discuss the evolution of Carlin gold exploration in Nevada since this time and to discuss the changes in perception of this unique type of mineralization. The method used by Coope and me in following up on Roberts' work was to map geologically the Roberts Mountain thrust and conduct geochemical sampling of favorable outcrops and float. Coope was highly experienced in geochemical exploration, as he had graduated from the Royal School of Mines in London, studying under John S. Webb, one of the pioneers of geochemistry as applied to mineral exploration. We first considered using pathfinder elements, but finally concentrated on gold analyses alone, even though the sensitivity of fire assays used at that time was only about one-half part per million. According to the spatial relationship of the mineralization to the Roberts Mountain thrust, as pointed out by Roberts (1960), we were looking for mineralization within the thrust itself. Our models were the known Gold Acres and Getchell mines, which contained reserves on the order of 0.9 to 1.8 mt (1 to 2 million st). These were not of substantial size, but I had hoped we might find more than one of these tributary to a mill that would justify an operation for our employer, Newmont Mining Corp. What we ended up with was the type of deposit we were looking for - an open pit deposit of micron gold, which the old timers had missed because the gold was not capable of being panned. But never in our wildest dreams did we think there was a chance of finding a body containing 10 mt (11 million st) of ore at 0.30 oz/st (10.3 g/t).The deposit was not in the thrust proper but was found in a favorable horizon of Roberts Mountain siltstone that was below the thrust. This is the first example of how a model should not be followed blindly. Newmont was successful in keeping this discovery quiet for some time. After a considerable amount of drilling, a rumor circulated that they had discovered a large low-grade ore body of around 1.7 to 2.1 g/t (0.05 to 0.06 oz/st), which of course would not have been economic with gold at $1.13/g ($35/oz), which was the fixed price at that time. The company, for obvious reasons, did not discourage the rumor. When, however, the true results came out there was a lot of feverish activity. Because of this new type of so-called "invisible gold," which could have been missed by the old timers, the thought was that other deposits would be discovered very soon. The Carlin and other smaller deposits, including Bootstrap, Blue Star and Gold Quarry, were in windows where the lower plate of the Roberts Mountain formation (below the thrust) had been exposed by erosion. Over the last few years, the never-ending search for mineral wealth has taken the exploration efforts of Canadian mining companies further and further into the High Arctic and isolated locations where regularly scheduled transportation and communication facilities are nonexistent. Names such as Black Angel, Nanisivik, Asbestos Hill, New Quebec Raglan, Rabbit Lake, and Arvik are today frequently mentioned in mining publications. Twenty years ago, mining in these locations was unheard of, mainly due to logistic problems. However, improvements in the design and use of helicopters, STOL aircraft, and icebreakers in northern areas have helped to overcome these problems, making these locations more attractive to mining companies. Since 1969, when Redpath completed its first Arctic project at Texas Gulf's Scrathcona Sound property on the northern tip of Baffin Island, Redpath has been actively involved in contracting and engineering projects in three general areas: the High Arctic, Ungava and Greenland. A map showing some of these projects is shown in Figure 1. In these areas, permafrost conditions exist from a depth of 274 metres in Ungava to a depth of approximately 610 metres in the Little Cornwallis Island area, with rock temperatures ranging from -5°C to -13°C. Outside temperatures range from a low of -50°C in the winter to a high of 21°C in the summer. High winds in the winter result in wind chill factors lower than -73°C

Considerable success has been achieved in recent years in reducing concentrations of respirable dust in UK coalmines; thankfully this has been reflected in significant improvements in pneumoconiosis statistics. However, continuous increases in mechanisation and in rates of working, accompanied by more stringent dust regulations, necessitate the introduction of improved and often more sophisticated methods of dust control. The increased application of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning techniques seems likely to be the most important step forward in dust control in coalmining during the next few years. A typical drivage in a UK mine is not more than 16 ft (5 m) wide and is supported by steel arches. In the past the majority of such roadways were driven by the conventional means of blasting and loading. Since the main purpose of ventilation was to clear blasting fumes and to provide adequate scouring of firedamp, not surprisingly it was usual to have 'forcing' ventilation. Present systems of operation are making increasing use of heading machines and it is not surprising that well over half of all drivages are now ventilated by exhausting methods. (1) The great majority of coal getting in the UK is from longwall faces, usually in seams of less than 6 ft (1.8 m) thickness. Although this method of min¬ing has many advantages in terms of safety and productivity, dust control is made more difficult because of the need for men and machines to work in the same ventilation stream. Much emphasis has been placed on improving the design and methods of opera¬tion of longwall machines to reduce dust production, and improved ventilation has provided greater dilution, and in consequence, reductions in dust concentration. On all machines water is now fed through internal galleries to the cutting elements. Unfortunately, one of the difficulties associated with mining thin seams is that there is some unavoidable cutting in the roof or floor and in many seams there are faults to be traversed and dirt bands which must be removed with the coal. Under these conditions it appears that the use of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning offers the most promising way of achieving satisfactory dust conditions.

The Asturian Central Coal Basin, in northern Spain, has been from 18th century an important coal producing area in Spain. Previously to mining activity, aquifer systems were of multibed porous type but the secondary porosity induced by mining operations and constituted by mine voids and fracturing modified the aquifer systems to karstic-porous type. The pumping stop associated with mine closure processes results in the flooding of the mining works. This causes important modifications in the hydrogeology and the hydrology as well as in water flow and in water quality. As a consequence of mine flooding, water overflows through shafts and old galleries or through not controlled ways of water leak to surface. Water tends to recover the original piezometric level, but materials significantly modified by the mining activity behave differently in terms of hydrogeology, and thus, the recuperation of the water level can affect infrastructures and housing in the area of the mine. When pumping stops, the quality of water can also be seriously affected when water comes in contact in oxidant conditions with sulphides and sulphates present in the surface of the materials that are flooded, especially in the subsequent period immediately after pumping stop.

Perceived environmental impacts from flotation reagents used in the phosphate industry have been of concern for nearly a decade. A research program was initiated to determine the distribution, fate, and consequences of flotation reagents (fatty acids, fuel oils, and amines) within the environment. Therefore, laboratory investigations of biodegradation and soil attenuation of the reagents were conducted along with field flotation mass balances and groundwater investigations in clay settling, sand tailings, and undisturbed areas. Sample analysis and a reagent mass-balance model indicated that most reagents are distributed in clay settling and sand tailings areas. Groundwater analyses showed no fatty acids or amines in any of 19 surficial or intermediate aquifer water samples. In contrast, fuel oils were detected in the surficial aquifer at all sand tailings areas in concentrations ranging between 8.5 and 0.5 mg/L. Fuel oil was also detected in trace amounts (0.6 mg/L) in one intermediate aquifer well located in an active sand tailings area. All fuel oil concentrations detected were very low and, coupled with a biodegradation rate of approximately 10% per month, all concentrations should be within reference levels in six months. Based upon the results of this study, use of flotation reagents in the beneficiation process of the Florida phosphate industry present no long-term threat to the environment.

"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. The main scope of the present study is to investigate the suitability and sensitivity of the magnetic susceptibility as a pollution monitoring tool in urban areas. For this purpose, a municipal park located in the centre of Chania city, which may be affected by traffic and domestic heating pollution, was selected as the study area. In the context of the present work, magnetic susceptibility measurements were conducted in two phases. Surface soil samples were collected in 2006 from the area under investigation and they were analyzed in order to estimate the spatial distribution of the magnetic susceptibility. One year later, mapping of the magnetic susceptibility has been contacted in situ using Bartington MS2D and MS2F sensors. Additionally, soil samples were collected from selected positions in order to compare the values of the magnetic susceptibility with that estimated in 2006 research. Both investigations indicate high values of the magnetic susceptibility around the park near the roads and in a small area inside the park where a café is located.

In the garden of national problems recognized by the American public, imports of mineral products is a hardy perennial. Concern for the security of mineral supplies has preoccupied nations since the industrial revolution and the mechanization of warfare. Since 1973, Americans have also been sensitized to the potential economic costs of overseas mineral supply disruptions and the cartelization of foreign production. Though oil prices have plunged since 1981, the import dependency issue remains topical. Political turmoil in Southern Africa reminds us that mineral supply disruptions will occur in the future as they have in the past. Producers of iron and steel, copper, and refined petroleum products seek protection from imports on national security grounds. The Reagan administration is proposing sweeping changes in the management of the federal mineral stockpiles. s an enduring need to take stock of the mineral trade position of the United States. This article considers the changing role that the U.S. has played in the twentieth century in non-fuel minerals trade. We begin by enunciating some principles that are useful in analyzing this trade. The changing pattern of trade in the 1900-1969 period is then reviewed. There follows a more detailed analysis of mineral trade trends in the 1970-84 period. Some consideration is given in the final section to the significance of non-fuel mineral trade for the U.S. economy. THE ECONOMICS OF U.S. MINERAL TRADE The allocation of non-fuel mineral products in the United States has in this century been accomplished primarily through the market mechanism. Except where trade barriers have distorted price signals, this means that mineral supplies have been obtained from the least cost source, with little regard for their country of origin. Mineral prices facing U.S. firms are sensitive to shifts in the domestic supply and demand, but are also sensitive to economic conditions overseas. The balance of trade in each mineral product has depended on the amount that is profitably produced and consumed domestically at the world price. The nation has produced exactly as much as it has consumed only by chance. U.S. demand for non-fuel minerals is derived from the demand for manufactures, farm commodities, and other goods whose production requires mineral products as inputs. The demand for such goods can be quite volatile, and in most industries moves cyclically due to its sensitivity to the level of aggregate economic activity. The supply of mineral products depends on the cost of extracting and processing mineral raw materials. These costs do not vary greatly in the short run. Because of these attributes of mineral markets, U. S. trade in mineral products fluctuates considerably from year to year. Most of this volatility results from shifts in domestic and overseas demand and from changes in exchange rates and trade barriers. Longer run changes in the mineral trade pattern can also be discerned. These depend on secular trends in demand and in the cost of mineral extraction and processing at home and overseas. The United States was originally endowed with extensive reserves of an array of mineral-rich ores and fossil fuels. It is also a nation with an entrepreneurial climate and technological capability conducive to extracting and processing those reserves. Not surprisingly, it has at one time or another ranked among the world's leading producers of a great many mineral products. With a population that is large and an economy that is technologically advanced by world standards, the U.S. has also been a leading consumer of mineral products. Because of its voracious appetite, the bulk of mineral products produced domestically has traditionally been consumed domestically as well. Net exports have been sizable only in those industries in which the nation has enjoyed an extraordinary cost advantage. By international standards, Indian coal seams are not very gassy. In some of the major coalfields such as Singareni, Wardha, Pench, Chirimiri, Rewa and Talcher Coalfields practically no methane is emitted from the coal seams. Even in the coalfields of Ranigang, Jharia, Bokaro and Karanpura, all of which are situated in the basin of the Damodar river, only a few mines are faced with excessive gas emission problems. But the number of such mines is increasing as deeper reserves are being worked and already the exploitation of some of the best quality coal reserves in the country is held up pending measures for control of methane emission in these mines. Even in mines having no previous history of gas emission, methane has been met near dykes and faults. This was dramatically revealed by an explosion in Dhori colliery in 1965 wherein 268 persons got killed. Until that time, Dhori colliery was considered as a non-gassy mine but on that fateful day gas came to the workings through a freshly exposed fault plane. Similar incidences of ignition of firedamp in so-called non-gassy mines have also occured in the past, for example, in Chapui Khas and Samla Dalurband collieries, but the casualty figures were not as high. After the Dhori explosion, all Indian coal seams have been declared to be gassy, whether presence of methane is detected in the workings or not.

Coking coal reserves in India are distributed geographically in Giridih, Raniganj, East Bokaro & Jharia Coalfields (J.C.F.). 97% of prime coking coal in JCF coming through underground mines is credited to Bord & Pillar mining systems inspite of the fact that it results in heavy mining losses. The cost of mining in B & P mines has been much higher due to various factors. In this paper, O.R. model has been discussed with case study for optimizing the cost of production in operational underground mines. Also, a computer algorithm has been discussed using a schematic flowchart, which provides the trend of mining-losses 'in different mining, systems with changing design parameters and finally selects, the optimum mining system for undeveloped seams based on economic appraisal criteria.

The term "fatigue" in mechanics, is used to refer to reduction in the strength of a material subjected to fluctuating or alternating stresses. Stresses that vary with time are called fluctuating stresses and if during fluctuation the stresses also change sign, they are called alternating stresses. In the field of rock mechanics, the term fatigue (static fatigue) has often been misused to refer to failure of geologic materials in time domain under constant load. To avoid confusion, we use the ten cyclic fatigue here to refer to failure of rock under alternating or fluctuating stresses. Fatigue in metals has been studied for over 100 years. Fatigue properties of geologic materials have, however, received little attention in the past. This is probably because until recently very little was known in regard to the behavior of geologic materials even under static loading. Secondly, suitable equipment for conducting cyclic fatigue experiments was not available until quite recently. A few cyclic fatigue studies have been undertaken on geologic materials to relate it to percussive or rotary drilling mechanisms (e. g. Grover et a11*; Burdine2). The results of these studies were inconclusive due to limited effort. Cyclic fatigue in concrete has been studied more extensively than geologic materials (e.g. Nordby3, Gray et al 4 and Bennett et a15) and mechanisms of fatigue in concrete are better understood than in geologic materials.

Mineral activity in Ontario represents an annual production in excess of $4 billion. The Ontario government encourages the mining industry to undertake mineral development through grant programs and incentives offered by mineral resource taxation. Computers are playing an increasingly important role in improving productivity in the administration of incentive programs and the Mining Tax Act in Ontario. This has meant speedier processing of grant applications and tax returns which is resulting in a streamlined approach to incentives and taxation in Ontario. The use of computers has resulted in significant contributions to key areas of concern such as assessment of mining tax returns, analysis of the changes, if any, to the Mining Tax Act and modeling of the Ontario Mineral Exploration Program (OMEP). Implementation of state-of-the-art technology such as Local Area Networks (LAN's), fourth generation languages and integrated micro-mainframe information processing has resulted in improved productivity as well as lower costs. As a result, the respective services provided to the mineral industry by these two programs are now delivered in an efficient and cost-effective manner utilizing the latest available computer technology.

In 1982, the US Congress passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA) to provide for the development of an underground repository for spent nuclear fuel. This development will be managed by the US Department of Energy. In 1986, the President selected three areas for site characterization to determine their suitability for the development of an underground repository. Those sites were: (1) a site in volcanic tuff located at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, (2) a site in bedded salt located in Deaf Smith County in Texas, and (3) a site in basalt located in Hanford, WA. At present, conceptual repository designs are being developed for each site. A key element of a repository design is the underground ventilation system required to support construction, nuclear waste emplacement, and potential waste retrieval. This paper describes the preliminary ventilation system designed for the repository in tuff. The concept provides separate ventilation systems for the construction and waste emplacement activities. The paper further describes the means by which acceptable environmental conditions will be reestablished to allow reentry into previously closed rooms for the purpose of inspection, maintenance, or retrieval.

The GPS based real time Mine Management and Truck Dispatching System for optimization of productivity is being installed in the Panchpatmali opencast bauxite mines of India. The possibilities of the use of ultrasonics in the extraction of gold and silver is the subject of a study initiated in our laboratory since the beginning of 1986. The study consisted of various aspects of extraction, the results of which are in· different stages of advancement. Reduction in leach time combined with higher recovery are the most striking effects so far. The ultrasonics machine, originally part of a small pilot plant, forms now part of a much larger unit. This has the remarkable effect of even higher recoveries and shorter leach times. These data suggested a study on the possibilities of reduction of thiourea consumption. Although promising, the results of these studies require check testing and will be published as soon as our findings have been confirmed. During the study, which consisted of the application in thiourea and cyanide leaching, some interesting side effects were observed. In the first place, a reduction in penetration time which might make coarse grinding feasible. Secondly, an increase in compaction of the filter cake which reduces pregnant liquor losses, especially with clayey ores and industrial waste products. These will be studied under contract in the near future.
