One of the major problems for us in the earthmoving industry is the analysis of materials under the ground surface. Countless engineering and construction jobs would be simplified if there were an inexpensive and fast way to obtain information on problems such as: Depth and solidith of bedrock? Nature of the materials between bedrock and the surface? Adequate foundation for bridges and drainage structures? Location of supplies of materials to be used in construction? Investigation of tunnel sites? Characteristics of swampy areas and investigation of existing and potential slide areas? These questions are of paramount interest to highway contractors as they bid jobs and plan, equipment spreads to handle them at optimum efficiency. Such information also is invaluable to engineers in the design and construction of bridges, buildings, railroads, canals, and tunnels.

Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh's official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt's prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,' so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt's most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. This paper reports on an ongoing exploratory research program which aims to develop an understanding of the relationships between mining companies and their stakeholders and the importance of corporate citizenship policies to reputation and hence to corporate sustainability. The findings of the first stages of this research, the results of a focus group and an expert opinion survey into the drivers of reputation for mining companies are reported. This study was undertaken to provide an understanding of the drivers of reputation for a number of stakeholder groups and the perceptions held by mining companies of these drivers for their stakeholder groups. Results indicate that drivers vary between stakeholder groups - that in the case of drivers common to a number of stakeholder groups they may vary in their importance across the groups, and that there may exist a divergence between industry?s perception and stake-holders? priorities. These results further the understanding of the relationship between corporate citizenship and reputation in the mining industry, thus assisting companies to strategically manage their corporate citizenship investments and assisting them in their transition to sustainable development.

At present, increasing focus of public perception is placed on the environmental and social benefits, risks and impacts of metals and metal-bearing products. To address these issues, the concept of product stewardship has recently been introduced into the political debate. In this paper, results from a survey of existing environmental and social reporting practice in the copper mining, smelting, refining and fabricating industry are presented. In this context, particular emphasis is placed on the reporting practice regarding products and product performance over the life cycle. In a few companies there has recently been a shift towards adopting product stewardship principles and putting them into action. As part of an ongoing exercise within the Non-Ferrous Consultative Forum on Sustainable Development sponsored by the International Copper Study Group (ICSG) key issues of interest to the non-ferrous metals sector are being addressed. The Forum, for example, has developed a series of principles, criteria and indicators that could form the basis for a voluntary, industry-lead product stewardship scheme. Current achievements and way forward of this product stewardship initiative will be presented.

While applications of stirred media mills for fine particle production have continued to increase, there is a lack of understanding of operating behavior and power requirement. Investigations in laboratory stirred media mills have been carried out with grinding media, limestone and yttria stabilized zirconia. The torque required to rotate impellers immersed in dense particulate media with supernatant versus impeller rotational speed displays four regions marked by sharp transitions: transition from static to dynamic friction; channel- ling; dispersing; and centrifuging. Equations, including dimension- less group correlations of power and modified Reynolds number, for relating power, speed, impeller and tank dimensions and design, media size and density, solid concentration, and other relevant variables have been established. Scale-up guidelines with respect to power consumption are also proposed. The best operating conditions for grinding limestone in the laboratory stirred media mill have been identified. Complexation by the polymer during ultrafine grinding of zirconia has been found to cause extraction of yttrium into solution with possibly significant changes in the surface chemical composition of the product.

Cationic reagents have been utilized in mineral processing since the mid 1930's and are based upon fatty nitrogen derivatives. The initial commercial development was centered around a flotation collector capable of separating potassium chloride from sodium chloride - potash flotation. The first commercial sale for Akzo, known then as Amour and Company, was realized in the summer of 1940 to a potash producer in Carlsbad, New Mexico for the flotation of potash. The success of the potash flotation collector led to the development of other cationic mineral processing reagents. Flotation collectors for iron ore, phosphate, calcium carbonate, silica sand, feldspar, and other silicates materialized into a large commercial business. Another area that realized commercial success was the development and use of anticaking/antidusting reagents for hygroscopic salts, fertilizer mixes, and granular fertilizers. A more recent development has found use in the trona industry as a defoamer and crystal growth modifier during the crystallization of sodium carbonate liquors. A review of cationic reagent chemistry and applications will be given and the potential for new application areas will be explored.

Greenbank Terotech is a member of the Halley & Mellowes Group of Companies and is accredited t AS3902. Greenbank has been involved within the wear resistant lining industry for over 20 years. Initially supplying cast Basalt piping systems through to the present day breakthroughs with SiTech cyclone linings. The challenge of finding the most cost effective cyclone lining has been a difficult process. Over the years many varieties of ceramics have come and gone. In particular within cyclone applications, many people have become disillusioned with the term "Ceramic." In practice, it was discovered that if a ceramic worked in one part of the plant, it did not necessarily work in the cyclone area. A good example of this is Alumina chute and pipe linings. An Alumina lined cyclone underflow bend would provide exceptional wear resistance, whereas an Alumina Spigot would have failed miserably. After Alumina's were tried, Silicon Carbides were experi­mented with. The results in many trials were mixed. What worked at one mine did not work at another. The results did not conclude decisively that ceramics were here to stay within the hard rock cyclone area. It was then that Greenbank Terotech started to look at the reason "Why do some linings work and others don't." We came to the conclusion that the matrix holding the particles together had to be the key to a successful cyclone material. At the time we looked at materials such as Alumina Bonded Silicon Carbides, Metallic (Aluminium) Bonded Silicon Carbide, 99% Alumina Ceramics and Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbides, but all these materials either suffered from chemical attack on the Aluminium matrix (via cyanide) or the matrix simply was not hard enough causing wear rates to be excessive. It was then we looked at SiTech. SiTech is a unique material in that the primary particles are Silicon Carbide, but the matrix is made up of a Secondary Silicon Carbide formed within the reaction bonding process.

New concepts in shaft kiln processing are included in the design of two large diameter shaft kiln plants now under construction. One kiln will be used to produce cement clinker at the Boettcher plant of the Ideal Cement Company at Fort Collins, Colorado. The other kiln is for the semi-commercial oil shale plant for Petrobras, the Brazil National Oil Company at Sao Mateus do Sul, Parana, Brazil. Investigations on application of the new concepts are proceeding in a portable pilot kiln. One can hardly discuss coal pneumoconiosis unless it is placed in the context of the total pneumoconiosis problem in the mining industry. However, it might be well if first we defined a few terms, since it has been my experience that the use of the word pneumoconiosis frequently causes con- fusion among those who are not familiar with the term. Pneumoconiosis comes from two Greek words meaning lung and dust. Hence, the word pneumoconiosis simply means dusty lung, or dust on the lung. There are many forms of the disease, some of which are disabling and some are not. Among the many dusts which cause pneumoconiosis might be included silica, asbestos, coal, talc, iron ore, and many other mineral dusts. Silicosis is a specific form of pneumoconiosis. It is caused by the inhalation of excessive amounts of silicon dioxide in the form of crystalline quartz. The disease is manifested by nodulation of the lungs which is apparent on an X-ray film. Continued exposure to silicon dioxide causes the nodules to grow and ultimately large areas of the lung become scar tissue which pre- vents the lung from performing its physiologic function. The 12,710-m (41,720-ft) Riverside Badlands Tunnel is located between the most active faults—San Andreas and San Jacinto—in Southern California. To accomplish the impervious final lining design and to accommodate the effects of earthquake ground motions, a new approach was developed and is prescribed in this paper. Two final lining options, welded steel pipe and prestressed concrete cylinder pipe, are considered for the tunnel, which will be excavated under groundwater and ground conditions from soft rock to hardrock at depths exceeding 244 m (800 ft). The buckling strength, serviceability, and structural integrity under seismic effects and other loads were considered in the design.

The talc deposit in Gemerská Poloma lies 350 to 400 m under the surface; the whole deposit is located at the highest-level drinking-water-source protection zone, therefore, opening in this mining area (a well, a ramp) requires higher investment, operational and water protection costs. The adit, outside the mining area, with a length of 4200 m, rising with a gradient of 3? and a diameter of 10.3 m2, allows free passage/runoff of mining-water through the adit, and guarantees low costs for transporting produced material and equipment. This solution is in total less demanding from both investment and operational point of view.

Since the report of the 1972 Rapid Excavation Conference in the city of Chicago, speculation has continued concerning the estimates of tunneling demand. Little has been published that would persuade me to modify substantially the rather tentative estimates that originated with the National Academy of Sciences-National Academy of Engineering (NAS-NAE) study of 1968 which were recomputed by the United States in the survey of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 1970. The OECD estimates, of course, hedged the really difficult question of forecasting civil construction tunneling demands. In the United States contribution, this was done by predicting both an upper and lower bound for important categories of demand. A discounting procedure was then applied to each of the major sectors of expenditures, permitting a forecast that reflected the current subjective assessment of how extensively and how likely cities were to adopt plans that required tunneling. This was done for water, utilities, transportation and other novel underground facilities. The purpose of this paper is a modest one. In it I wish to describe the efforts made since 1972 to generate more thoughtful and more robust estimates of urban sector demands, and to apply what has been learned to the most difficult category of predictions: those for urban mass transit systems. The thin film balance (TFB) technique was used to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses (H3 between two air bubbles in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and electrolyte (NaCl) solutions. The results were used to determine the magnitudes of the hydrophobic forces (K232) using the extended DLVO theory. The Km values determined from He measurement allowed us to predict disjoining pressure isotherms, which were found to be in excellent agreement with those obtained experimentally using a bike-wheel film holder. The rate of film thinning was measured at low SDS concentrations with varying amounts of electrolyte (NaCl) added. In general film thinning was controlled by the capillary pressure during the initial stages, while it was controlled by the surfaces forces during the later stages. At low NaCl concentrations, it was possible to predict the rate of film thinning using the Reynolds equation, provided that the driving force was corrected for the contributions from the hydrophobic force, which in turn were determined from the KZ32 values obtained from the He values measured experimentally. At high NaCl concentrations, where it was difficult to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses, the contributions from the hydrophobic forces were determined by fitting the film thinning data to the Reynolds equation. The K232 values obtained using both the equilibrium film thickness and the film thinning measurements showed that hydrophobic force deceased with increasing surfactant and salt concentrations. It was found that the hydrophobic force in foam films was very sensitive to the added electrolyte concentration.

In 1992, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to fund the reclamation of an abandoned placer mine. The project also included the development of a water-quality and hydrologic-monitoring program. The grant was provided under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act and is administered through EPA's Region X Water Division. For the past 100 years, Alaska's interior has been the site of extensive placer-mining operations. Early surface and underground operations left small tailings piles, some of which are still visible. Dredging left larger tailings piles, similar to those in California and elsewhere. The only reclamation of these tailings involved use as road base and fill and other civil applications. Most active mines in Alaska are on state and federal lands. The standards of reclamation for mines on federal lands are established under US Mining Laws, 43 CFR 3809. They address only mines operated since 1981. Under a state statute passed in 1990, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water and Mining, has issued reclamation regulations. These regulations apply to sites on state, federal and private lands, but only those mined since Oct. 15, 1991.

The purpose of grouting is to modify the permeability and strength characteristics of the subsoil in such a way that the planned structure can be efficiently constructed at a given location. This technique, which originally underwent considerable development in the field of dams construction is constantly evolving and it becomes more and more important in urban zones of intensive underground development for projects such as transport tunnels, stations, car parks, ect. Grouting becomes more and more indispensable whatever the natural characteristics of that subsoil ; such is the case particularly when the planned work runs through cohesionless granular soils, usually water-bearing such as alluvium, sands, disturbed ground, fill material, etc. The selection of the grouting method and the extent of treatment required at depends on two fundamental factors. 1º) nature and behaviour of subsoil to be treated. There is no need to stress the necessary of a good knowledge of geotechnical, hydrological and chemical characteristics of the ground to be treated. At the present time the specialists in these fields have available numerous methods of analysis, either laboratory or field tests, which enable to evolve a suitable treatment.

In 1988, the Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA) launched Responsible Care®, a program of guiding principles created to address the publics' concern about the manufacture and use of chemicals. The Product Stewardship Management Practice code is a key component of the program. Along with the other five comple­mentary codes - Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER), Pollution Prevention, Employee Health and Safety, Process Safety, and Distribution - it has been initiated to protect the health and safety of member companies employees, neighbors, customers, the public and the environment. Possibly no other Management Code requires greater collec­tive effort or comprehensive commitment to implement than Product Stewardship. With its mandated cradle-to-grave control, every employee is required to consider all of the potential cir­cumstances involving product and processes, from raw material supply to customers final use or consumption of product. Degussa Corporation, a long time CMA member, fully endors­es the Responsible Care initiative and is most active in imple­menting the various codes. In fact, the guiding principles of the program are an integral part of the company's business strategy. Degussa recognizes that its long-term success and the health of each of its products, the company and the chemical industry itself, is contingent on the successful implementation of the program. Furthermore, the company believes its role in society and the economy can only be justified and sustained if it improves the overall quality of peoples' lives. Consequently, it is a dictum that Degussa products must provide a net benefit over their entire life cycle - from inception to final disposal - both in terms of their utility and their impact on health, safety and the environment.

Environmental permitting is a critical component for joint-venture projects located in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This paper presents the basic CIS regulatory environmental requirements for permitting of a hypothetical mining source and emphasizes air permitting. Topics which will be covered include: the Expertiza process, air pollution quantification, data requirements, and air pollution modeling protocol. A comparison will be made between permitting requirements for air pollution sources in the United States and a CIS country, Kazakstan.

Appalachian kimberlites appear to be spatially distributed along two structure parallel trends running from Tennessee to New York. It is hypothesized that the kimberlites were emplaced at the intersection of structure parallel basement faults and cross- structural lineaments. The latter are expressed in potential field and remotely sensed data. The western trend follows the Rome Trough from eastern Kentucky to south central New York. The eastern trend parallels the edge of the Ridge and Valley in Virginia and Maryland.
