Flotation columns have been readily accepted for use in most sulfide flotation plants: however, recently columns are being used in many other areas. Recent improvements in design methodologies have overcome many operating problems and led to improvements in metallurgy. In addition. Physical improvements in column design have simplified their operation while leading to better control. The Turbo-Air External Bubble Generator has provided a method for bubble size control and variation in air holdup and carrying capacity. These have enabled commercial operations to improve grades and recoveries by optimizing performance.

The basic principle of this separation method was already defined in the middle of the nineteenth century. However, a change over for the treatment of minerals has followed from the construction of proper machines i.e. airjigs and airtables as late as in the twenties and thirties of this century. The main application of this technology was subsequently found in coal processing and reached quite a great dimension in the two following decades. The number of applications of this method in mineral dressing plants decreased rapidly and has almost vanished in the fifties in favour of wet concentration procedures. It has been for a long period as long as up to the eighties that no more consideration was taken for applying dry gravity separation in the field of mineral processing also due to the successful introduction of flotation. Due to the fact that labour cost was increasing remarkably within the past period after the end of World War II also the economic conditions in the agricultural sector became more though. As a result there came up a great demand for harvesting machines. Since agricultural products can only be processed by dry methods in a prevailing number, highly developed machines were introduced for the dry processing of food and feed stuff.

Mining and extraction methods in the copper industry use basic technologies developed over a period of almost 150 years. Paradigm shifts in the industry have been rare, yet human involvement in the activities has changed dramatically. Clearly defined extraction paths have become more blurred as economic considerations broke down the barriers that had encouraged specialization. What had been a labor-intensive industry unfettered by environmental restrictions was forced to change. Better productivity and "cleaner" operations resulted in much higher capital costs on a plant basis. Many of the changes were truly innovative in the same spirit as in the mining revolution of the first decade of the twentieth century. What role will innovation play in the next 20 years as lower-grade, mixed-metal orebodies are exploited in more remote locations?

In order to drive tunnels with low overburden in town regions, it is necessary to give a quantitative prognosis for the deformation of the underground as well as of the tunnel-lining and of its stability. These problems and their solutions are illustrated by the works for a two-track-railway-tunnel in Bochum (Ruhrdistrict). In this case the most important problems consisted in passing below buildings in a vertical distance to the fundamentals of only 3.20 m and a railway earthdam with rapid train traffic in a distance of 4 m under the dam. The results of measurements from other comparable tunnels and finite-element-computations were used to prognose the settlements on the surface and in the ground, their distributions and their development in time. To obtain these values at the site, a special system of tunnel driving was executed. The tunnel was excavated with the newest type of tunneling-machine from DEMAG, cutting an inclined front, immediately followed by a special temporary support of shotcrete and inclined steel-ribs. By using theoretical and empirical methods to assess the behavior of the tunnel and underground and by executing an optimal driving system in technical as well as economical aspects, the expected behavior, expressed in quantitative values, was almost equivalent to those received by control measurements.

In the period 1982-1992, world trade has increased in real terms about 65% (Anon., 1992b). The nominal value of this trade in the early 1990s is approximately $5 trillion. In 1970, mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of world trade. By 1980, despite rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities made up about 18% of the total value of world trade, with crude oil amounting to 16% and other minerals the remaining 2%. By 1987, the major worldwide economic slowdown and falling oil prices meant that minerals constituted only about 10% of the total value of world trade, or about $500 billion in 1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). The importance of minerals in world trade since 1987 has remained at about these levels. Approximately 40% of world mineral commodity production is traded internationally. Some economists predict that minerals and other commodities are likely to continue to decline in relative importance in terms of the value of world economic output, as well as world trade, into the foreseeable future (Thurow, 1992). This projected decline in commodity demand may also be related to much slower global economic growth over the next decade (Alperovitz, 1992). Industrial minerals and rocks constituted roughly 2.5% of total mineral commodity exports in the late 1980s, but their relative importance as a portion of mineral commodity exports nearly doubled in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). Industrial minerals constitute the most rapidly growing share of total mineral commodity exports. In addition, price declines among industrial minerals were uncommon in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). While prices of sulfur and most of the fertilizer minerals have seen some erosion and slow growth in markets in the period 1987-1992, other industrial minerals have increased in both value and share of the export market (USBM, 1992). The place of industrial minerals in world trade becomes even more significant when one looks at shipments of chemical fertilizers and basic chemicals that are counted as manufactured products rather than industrial mineral commodities. The United States is the major world producer of industrial mineral commodities and products made from these nonmetallic minerals and rocks. The former Soviet Union, now The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and China have very significant deposits of industrial minerals. Japan exports significant quantities of cement. The US, CIS, and Morocco export large amounts of phosphate rock. Canada and Germany export substantial amounts of potash. Sulfur from Poland, industrial diamonds from South Africa, Zaire, and Brazil, and fluorspar from Mexico are all important exports.

Mining-related wastes, which are increasing, are being utilized more and more as valuable resources in Virginia. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) divides mining-related wastes into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation and those generated from mineral processing. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where waste (by-product) materials are present at a variety of mining sites and processing plants; some of which have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include: used concrete recycled for roadbase material; pyrite coated with magnetite for use in portland cement; minor amounts of fly ash for use in concrete block, lightweight aggregate, and flowable structural fills; granite and diabase quarry fines for use as agricultural and asphalt filler; lime kiln dust for use in neutralizing and stabilizing coal refuse; soapstone aggregate for use in terrazzo heat retention panels; kaolin for use as a filler product and as an ingredient in white cement; slate quarry fines used as landcover and combined with aggregate for crusher run and as a filler in asphalt; and coal refuse for use as fuel in a lightweight aggregate plant. There are some materials available that have never been utilized, although several ideas were investigated to turn them into usable commodities. One such material is a high-alumina scrap produced as a by-product at a ferrovanadium processing plant. However, large quantities of waste materials from metal mining, industrial mineral, and fossil fuel operations remain to be disposed of in an environmentally safe and economic manner. In 1989, almost one million tons of fly ash were produced from burning of coal at eight coal-fired power plants in Virginia. Present uses for this waste such as an ingredient in concrete block, concrete aggregate, and in structural fills cannot dispose of all the available material; however, increased use of fly ash as a soil/rock substitute for structural fills and embankments may solve the problem of its disposal. Another waste material is calcium carbonate precipitate paste produced at a lithium carbonate processing plant and presently being used for back filling an on-site inactive underground limestone mine. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastes in the form of CaS04 will probably increase threefold. If this material contains a minimum of 95 percent gypsum and negligible chloride, it may have a value to a wallboard manufacturer as we move toward the year 2000. Thought must be given how this increasing waste can be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

istorical records suggest that the gathering of geologic information in China began more than 2,000 years ago. Modern-day geological work in the nation started in the early part of this century but it progressed rather slowly. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), there were only 800 people engaged in geological work and only 200 trained geologists among them. According to Minerals and Mining in China, many accomplishments were achieved within China's mining industry during the period of years between 1949, the founding of modern China, and 1997. These include: ? The number of types of minerals with verified reserves increased from 18 (pre-Liberation) to 162 (today). ? Mineral deposit localities grew from 5,123 (pre-Liberation) to nearly 200,000 (today). Of these 200,000 localities, more than three-quarters have verified mineral reserves. ? Minerals extraction and processing contribute to 31 % of the total industrial output value of China (today). ? Regional geological maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 covering the entire country have been completed, while regional geological and hydrogeological maps at a scale of 1:200,000 covering two-thirds of the country have also been finished (today). ? Before 1949, China was regarded as an oil-poor country. Since the 1950s, China has developed an extensive petrochemical industry. It is largely government-owned except for a limited number of joint ventures. The central government maintains active control over China's most productive fields, including the Daqing field in the Songliao Basin of northeastern China and the Shengli and Liaohe fields in the Bohai Basin of northeastern China. ? Employment in the minerals industry engaged in geological exploration increased from 800 (pre-Liberation) to 1 million (early this decade). The new report provides an overview of the current political and economic situation in China and discusses how this affects the minerals industry. China is in transition between a socialist planned economy and a market economy. This makes it difficult for non-Chinese to keep track of developments. Minerals and Mining in China is divided into 14 chapters that contain detailed statistics, including data on the geographical location and extent of known mineral reserves, production rates, local technical personnel, imports and exports. The report reveals which companies are already active in the area by profiling 50 major investment projects in China's metals and minerals industry. According to its author, China possesses one of the world's largest mining industries, ranking among the leading producers of several metallic and nonmetallic resources. The Chinese mining industry is extraordinarily complex. It has evolved into an overwhelmingly large bureaucracy that was, until the 1980s, shrouded from and misunderstood by the international community. To date, more than 160 types of minerals have been discovered in China. But a significant portion of the minerals and energy base remains largely unidentified and evaluated. And despite China's large reserves of mineral resources, with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, the country ranks among the lowest in the world in terms of proven reserves per capita. New Mexico ranks 2nd in uranium reserves in the U. S., which amounts to 15 million tons ore at 0.277% U3O8 (84 million lbs U3O8) at $30/lb (EIA, 2006). The most important deposit in the state is sandstone within the Morrison Formation (Jurassic) in the Grants district. More than 340 million pounds of U3O8 have been produced from these deposits from 1948-2002, accounting for 97% of the total production in New Mexico and more than 30% of the total production in the United States. Sandstone uranium deposits are defined as epigenetic concentrations of uranium in fluvial, lacustrine, and deltaic sandstones. Three types of sandstone uranium deposits are recognized: tabular (primary, trend, blanket, black-band), roll-front (redistributed, post-fault, secondary), and fault-related (redistributed, stack, post-fault). Several companies are planning to mine these deposits by in-situ leaching.

This paper deals with some aspects of concrete construction in remote locations and/or cold climates. The writer's experience covers 25 years in construction in western and Central Canada. I will bring forth some pertinent observations and cost facts learned from this experience. Let us start by saying that there is nothing more important than preplanning the entire project. By this I mean the production of the engineering design, working drawings, soliciting of prices and ordering of all equipment and contractors work, the delivery of all equipment and all onsite work. All of this should be placed on a master schedule, preferably a C.P.M. We have been using C.P M. Scheduling for all of our work for 5 years and have found it in-valuable. This preliminary schedule will show initial items of work and target dates. After main equipment orders are placed and deliveries confirmed, the construction schedule can be revised to include manpower and construction equipment requirements. From this information the size of camp is determined. This, of course, must be ordered several months ahead. The manpower schedule can be broken into trades to tell us the number of men of each trade required at any time. This is important in helping to determine where the men must come from and whether or not any incentive is needed to get them. The schedule will also point out if it is impossible to get the project closed in before winter becomes too severe unless overtime is worked or the project is started in early spring. In most parts of Canada cold weather starts in October and lasts through April. A common term of reference has been to wait for the frost to come out of the ground before starting work in the spring. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating biodegradation of cyanide as a means of decommissioning heap leach operations. Biological oxidation decreased weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide in process solutions from 50 to 170 ppm down to 0.1 ppm. The tests were conducted both in trickling column reactors, using quartz as the growth surface, and in upflow columns, using activated carbon as the growth surface. In addition, exploratory tests indicated that bacteria will destroy residual cyanide in leached ore. A flowsheet has been proposed for closure of heap leach operations in which the metals processing portion of the plant, possibly the carbon adsorption columns, or a collection pond is used as a bioreactor. The cyanide in the process solution is destroyed in the bioreactor and the treated water is used to rinse residual cyanide from the spent heaps. The water is recycled until the effluent WAD cyanide concentratio� meets discharge standards.

The Grenville structural province, a 400 km-wide belt of Precambrian metamorphic rocks which crosses the province of Québec in a northeasterly direction, is the host of several wollastonite occurrences. Most of these are found in marble and calc-silicate rocks enclosed within or located near intrusive bodies. Reconnaissance and detailed mapping of such zones have helped to identify areas of interest for wollastonite exploration. The most important zone is located in the huge Lake Saint-Jean anorthosite massif in the central part of the Grenville. A recent geological mapping project has revealed the presence of wollastonite in metasedimentary faulted remnant of the roof. The main occurrence consists of diopside and wollastonite in a zone at least 3 km long and 150 m wide. Preliminary sampling suggests and average grade of 50 percent wollastonite with an aspect ratio of 151. Other wollastonite deposits occur in the western part of the Grenville, mainly north and west of Montreal, where the Morin anorthositic complex and a large syenite mass intrude the metasedimentary rocks of the Grenville Supergroup. Marble bands with up to 70 percent wollastonite occur locally at the southern margin of the complex or as an inclusion in the syenite. Significant wollastonite occurrences have recently been found in the eastern part of the Grenville. One of them is located in metamorphosed calcareous rocks which are part of the granulite facies Manicouagan metamorphic complex. A representative sample analyzed 54 percent wollastonite. Farther south, an inclusion diopside-wollastonite gneiss containing an estimated 40 percent wollastonite occurs at the margin of the Pentecôte River anorthositic complex.

Introduction Shotcrete, by the American Concrete Institute definition, is mortar or concrete pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface. The term gunite is still common in literature. It is a trade name established by Cement Gun Co. of Allentown, PA, around 1911 for a dry mix of fine aggregate material, hydrated at the nozzle, and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface. This article will discuss shotcrete applications, ingredients, mix proportioning, batching and mixing, admixtures, testing, and steel fiber vs. conventional shotcrete. Applications Shotcrete is used primarily by the mining and underground construction industries to temporarily stabilize an excavated rock surface until a permanent cover can be installed. It may also be used as the permanent covering material. Other uses include refractory material, architectural finishes, slope stability, wearing surfaces, repairing existing concrete structures, fireproofing, and corrosion protection of steel. Wet Versus Dry Process In the wet process, all ingredients, including water but not accelerator, are mixed the same way as normal concrete before its placement by pneumatic projection. The accelerator is added in a liquid state through the nozzle at the point of placement. In the dry process, all ingredients, including acceleration in dry form but not water, are mixed just before placement by pneumatic projection. Water is added through the nozzle at the point of placement. Liquid accelerator may be added at the nozzle in the dry process. Ingredients Shotcrete consists basically of the same ingredients as concrete with some limitations. Type I, II, and III cements are used. However, Type II seems to be used most in underground applications. This can be attributed to ground water at most sites having slight to moderate concentrations of sulfates. Air-entraining cement or air-entraining admixtures are generally not used in dry mix shotcrete. It is generally agreed that it is impossible to entrain air due to the absence of the usual concrete mixing action, and the high velocity of impingement of the material on the application surface. Air-entraining cement or air-entraining admixtures are used in wet mix shotcrete. Their use, however, is not widespread due to the placement method and the fact that high velocity air drives off most of the entrained air. Test results are not conclusive in showing any durability increase of shotcrete to freezing and thawing by using entrained air. In spite of current practice, the trend is toward additional research, with more agencies and owners requiring the use of entrained air. The philosophy behind this is that some entrained air is better than no entrained air to increase durability to freezing and thawing. The aggregates used in shotcrete are the same as those used in concrete. However, the largest coarse aggregate presently used is 19 mm (0.75 in.). A typical gradation requirement is shown in Table 1. The water quality requirement for shotcrete is the same as that for concrete. Accelerators are by far the most important admixture in shotcrete.

A typical problem in ventilation networks with multiple fan systems is the possibility of them interacting. Multiple fan systems are no exceptions in complex tunnels, and may also be met in mines where underground fans are installed. When aiming at controlling a multiple fan system in a ventilation network, e.g. with a view to maintaining an acceptable air quality level, yet at minimum power consumption, transient flow conditions frequently occur. Although in most applications these transients are short compared to the time needed to achieve the planned actions on the ventilation, one should, however, keep in mind that it is important to avoid any bouncing effect between different (adjacent or distant) fan systems. Therefore a simulation of the unsteady-state flows could allow us to learn more about the propagation of transients within the network, and their possible secondary effects Among others, one question that often is raised, is to find out in which sequence and at what time schedule each of the fans in a network should e.g. be started up? Another typical problem, into which an unsteady-state simulation could provide some insight is the following: how should the facilities of variable pitch angle and/or changeable RPM of several fans operating in parallel be handled and combined in order to obtain a flow rate that changes gradually from zero to its maximum value i.e. the sum of the individual throughput flows of all the fans. The literature is not very abundant on the topic of simulating transient flows in networks. There is no doubt that numerical models have been developed (Pollak, Christensen, 1987), most of the time for particular applications (Wala, Kim, 1985), (Tanaskovic et al., 1984), (Schultz, Sockel, 1991), etc. The aim of this paper is to present a model that also simulates one-dimensional compressible flows in unsteady-state conditions with, however, the specific intent to handle networks with more than one fan. PROBLEM STATEMENT The mathematical model chosen to describe the unsteady flows in a ventilation network is based on the dynamic and continuity equations applied to each of its airways. The following basic assumptions are made : - the flow in the airway is considered to be one- dimensional, - - the flow is assumed to be fully turbulent, and hence the ATKINSON equation for calculating the friction losses will be applied. Whether this equation remains valid for transient state flows remains an open question. However, this may reasonably be assumed since the interesting flow frequencies are low. A discussion may be found in (Kämpf, 1987) ; - the airways are assumed to have a constant cross- sectional area along their length. If obviously this would not be the case, it is always possible to subdivide the concerned airway into sections for which the previous assumption holds. Applying the basic equations of mass and energy conservation, the flow in each branch may be described by the Euler equation for Newtonian flows.

The ever increasing price of bulk commodities forces buyers and sellers in world markets to take a more careful look at methods for obtain¬ing accurate accounting of commodity trans¬actions in commerce and material utilization in processes. Depending upon the application of a sampling and weighing system or the use intended, inaccuracies can result in an eco¬nomic loss of income or a loss in quality of the process. It inevitably results in a loss of control of ones costs. The accuracy of samp¬ling and weighing systems is today extremely important, as they are recognized to be the key components of the overall management system designed to provide both quantitative and qualitative control. This paper will be confined to the weighing systems only and will deal with various as¬pects of system design, calibration and opera¬tions. Special emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field.

Core Laboratories, a division of Western Atlas International, maintains laboratories in all energy-producing areas of the United States, as well as in many foreign countries. Central to laboratory operations has been the incorporation of computers and computer software. Core has developed a mu1tiuser Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) , which is currently installed in numerous company sites in the U.S., and is now undergoing installation in Canada. In addition, Core has provided custom soft ware to contract laboratories which Core operates on behalf of mining firms. The software development was done under the direction of the author in Denver, Colorado, and Casper, Wyoming. The intent of this paper is to pass some of the practical experience gained by our efforts on to those who wish to utilize computers more fully in the laboratory setting. The product of analytical laboratories is numbers. Nothing else comes from our work. We deal in information about samples. It is then reasonable to assume that the computer would be central to a laboratory operation. The hard part is to initially define what kind of computer the lab operation needs. The choices today can be very complex, and almost every hardware salesman is full of bad advice. Even the people in your own information services department may hold divided opinions. Since the advent of the personal computer, we have lived with a polarized data processing community. The PC boys consider their machines equal to any challenge, while the "save the mainframe" crowd view the PCs as limited toys that are only good for the things that clutter up a real computer. Management tends to lean toward whatever costs the least.

Rock bolting or anchoring are methods of stabilization which are not being fully utilized in California and probably in other parts of the world due to lack of understanding of the principles, or due to poor results in actual installation. The problem is greater in California because so much of the rock is either soft or badly fractured and broken. Almost any recognized type of rock bolt or anchor will perform successfully is hard, fresh rock, but the problems become many-fold when working in decomposed granites, shales, soft sandstones or other soft, highly-broken rock. There has been an enormous amount of research by manufacturers, consultants, private organizations, and governmental agencies on rock bolting. It would be impossible to discuss all the methods and philosophies of rock bolting in this paper. Therefore, with the indulgence of the experts, I will give only a very generalized coverage on rock bolting techniques. However, My main purpose is to point out some of the problems of rock bolting in soft rock.

There are a number of air classifiers manufactured throughout the United States and the rest of the world. The classifiers manufactured by Alpine, A. G. of Augsburg, Germany, are unique in their abilities. It is this uniqueness that I wish to delve into and in this respect we will limit this discussion primarily to the classifiers as manufactured by Alpine. It has been reported in the past that these classifiers were introduced into the. United States in the late 50's. Until the introduction of the Alpine Classifiers, air classification seldom produced a satisfactory fractionation of a product below 45 microns (325 mesh) or above approximately 22 mesh. It has been a common practice to classify fine materials which used water as a carrier medium The use of centrifuges are today producing thousands of tons of finely partitive powders in the very small particle size range. The use of centrifuges in connection with wet grinding mills has increased the rates of production of these mills considerably.

Mixed cable waste, which amounts to more than 200,000 tpy in Germany, is subjected to recycling. In most cases cable recycling means only recovering copper and/or aluminum metals. The remaining cable waste contains nearly 3-8% of the reusable materials, and is disposed of in landfills. Aluminum is recovered within copper products and leads to lower product prices. Preliminary laboratory tests show that the use of shaking hydro-tables as well as electrostatic separators result in less than 1 % of metals in the residual material. The products are high in grade at metal recoveries of more than 85%. Furthermore, applying a modified electrostatic separator may also lead to an efficient Cu-Al separation. The separation efficiency amounts to up to 95%.

Since the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro and the publication of the agenda 21, the concept of Sustainable Development has become one of the major issues for governmental politics, societal developments and entrepreneurial policies. Current projects that deal with Sustainable Development in the mineral raw materials sector mainly focus on large-scale mining operations - especially for open pit mining - or on artisanal small scale mining. Artisanal small scale mining is in this connexion characterised as non-mechanized and mostly illegal mining activities. The number of workers is mostly far below 20. However, until now there exist no assessments or analyses with respect to the actual or potential contribution of industrial small scale mining to sustainable development. Industrial small scale mining refers to high technology or highly mechanized/automated extraction of small, high-grade deposits that due to their small size ? in combination with geological, depth and other constraints ? are not economically exploitable with large-scale mining operations. The Institute of Mining Engineering I and the Institute for Processing of Mineral Raw Materials at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany is currently conducting a research project financed by the German Research Foundation in order to investigate this issue. In the course of this project the sustainability of industrial small scale mining will be assessed. Therefore sustainability indicators, an assessment system and recommendations as well as options for actions and policies will be developed, in order to evaluate current industrial small scale mining activities as well as the potential for future developments in industrial small scale mining, both from a technological as well as from the point of view of sustainability, considering economical, social and environmental chances and risks.
