Extrapolation of the rock properties obtained from the cores exploration holes to the surrounding areas often causes problems because of frequent sudden changes in the geologic composition of strata. To address this problem, the author has been developing a method of rapid strength testing "in situ," with application of a borehole penetrometer. This method, as opposed to conventional laboratory testing, does not require rock samples to be retrieved and handled/machined before testing. The results are generated by strength determination on the wall of a drill hole at a site. The newest development is a borehole penetrometer that requires only a 1.38.mm (1.5 in) diameter hole. The small diameter of the penetrometer body allows for drilling test holes with production mine equipment such as roof bolters. It opens the possibility of broad application in coal mines, as well as in hard rock mines and tunneling. The principles of the apparatus are described and are illustrated with examples of its applications.

The performance of personal alpha dosimeters in mixed radon daughter and thoron daughter atmospheres in Ontario uranium mines is described together with monitoring developments which enable the radon daughter working level to be determined separately. The theoretical bases for continuous and integrated working level measurements based on individual and gross counts are presented in terms of the weighting factor for combining the thoron daughter working level with the radon daughter working level, and in terms of the in-growth time of the air. Implications for the determination of working level in the presence of thoron daughters are discussed.

Addwest Minerals' turnaround of the Gold Road Mine in 1996 proves the old adage "mines are made, not found." The underground mine, located in Arizona's San Francisco mining district, was reopened in 1995. Start-up proved difficult because the initial mining method created significant ore grade dilution. A novel flotation device, cyclonic static micro-bubble column flotation (FCSMC), was introduced in this paper. FCSMC has been widely applied for fine coal preparation in China, and its application has been further expanded to the mineral processing industry. The FCSMC system features a unique cyclonic structure which enhances the separation performance of the column. In this paper, the cyclonic separation mechanism of FCSMC process was investigated, and corresponding kinetics equations were established to probe the separation principle of this device. Some typical examples of using FCSMC to separate different materials including coal, copper, fluorite, etc., were presented. High-calcium limestones occur in the upper part of the New Market Formation, of Lower Middle Ordovician age, in Franklin and Cumberland Counties, Pennsylvania. The high-calcium facies of the New Market Formation is represented by sublithographic limestone or vaughanite, which probably formed in quiet water; low-energy environments such as intershoal lagoons, or in protected bays similar to the present-day Florida Bay environment. Rapid facies changes are characteristic of the strata. The better grade of stone lies in the upper 100 to 125 feet of the New Market Formation and averages 95-97% calcium carbonate. Silica and magnesia are about equal in amount as impurities. One high-calcium belt extends from the Maryland state line through Chambersburg and Newville to beyond Carlisle. The strata in this belt are structurally complex, which requires careful field study' and core-drilling prior to exploitation. Stone suitable for blast-furnace flux is present in relatively large amounts, but stone for open-hearth use or portland cement requires more selective quarrying.

Good afternoon, fellow members of the international mining community. I appreciate the opportunity to participate in this special three-day, international gathering, and to join with you in honoring one of my very good friends, Doug Fuerstenau. It couldn't be more fitting to have this kind of event to mark Doug's 60th birthday. You know, in addition to his faculty position at the University of California in Berkeley, Doug is a member of the Board of Directors of our Homestake Mining Company. So it is a double pleasure for me to help pay tribute to one of the outstanding academicians of the mining industry as well as a man with whom I work closely in running Homestake. I have been asked to talk about "The Future of Precious Metals," but I will concentrate my remarks on gold. Since the theme of this Symposium is "Challenges in Mineral Processing," what I'm going to talk about is a challenge that relates especially to a major problem faced by those of us who process ores to recover gold. I noted that in the Scope of this Symposium, it stated: "the mineral industry is currently facing many challenges to improve the economics, operating efficiencies and environmental concerns of the mineral processing system." I couldn't agree more with that statement. I think that a need exists for us to address this situation as it involves gold. And who better to consider this than the worldwide leaders of mineral processing research here assembled. I start with the premise that we need a new method for cyanide use or a chemical to replace sodium cyanide entirely. Monitoring on Whites waste rock dump at Rum Jungle has provided a unique opportunity to assess the effectiveness of a cover in the medium term. Temperature and oxygen concentration profiles have been measured continuously, from some years before the cover was put in place in 1983 until the present. Lysimeters have been used to measure water infiltration rates. Heat and oxygen transport processes in the dump have been modelled and compared with field data, enabling oxidation rates to be quantified both before and after the cover was put in place. It has been found that the cover reduced the overall oxidation rate to between one third and one half of the uncovered rate. There is evidence that both the overall oxidation rate and water infiltration rate have increased in recent years.

This article examines some important trends in East-West trade in non-fuel mineral products, in particular the recent decline in Eastern bloc exports of such products. It relates this decline to an improvement in Soviet terms of trade; a deterioration of geological and locational conditions in Soviet mineral production; an increased integration of the CMEA-countries based on a regional pooling of resources; and a surge in demand for mineral commodities in Eastern countries coupled with a slowdown in Western economic growth. Finally, it evaluates to what extent these determinants may evolve in a different direction during the eighties and thus foster East-West mineral trade. Eastern1 bloc trade in mineral products is a subject of perennial interest in the West. When exports increase, there is much talk of the dangers of dependence on the East for critical fuels and materials. When imports increase, talk turns to the danger of Soviet dependence on Western supplies. A common fear is that the USSR may not only seek to meet its own resource needs but also deny the access of Western countries to these resources. This paper, like three other recent additions to the lite5ature on Soviet foreign trade of commodities2, tries to put matters in clearer and cooler perspective. The first section evaluates the structure of East-West mineral trade and tries to identify some important trends of recent years. The second section relies on supply and demand factors, as well on the Comecon connection (the intra-Council for Mutual Economic Assistance mineral cooperation) to explain why there has been a reversal in the mineral trade trend since the end of the seventies. The last section evaluates the factors which could stimulate East-West mineral trade in the future.

Jim Walter Resources operates five underground coal mines with longwall faces in operation in four of the mines. Due to high air velocities (1000-1200 fpm) needed for methane control together with the friability of the coal, dust control on JWR longwalls offers unique challenges. We have tested many innovative measures to reduce respirable dust concentrations on longwalls with varying degrees of success. These measures include the "shearer clearer" system, different drum water spray configurations, sprays on the longwall belt, stageloader and crusher sprays, wetting agents in the spray water system, and homotropal ventilation. Water infusion of deactivated horizontal methane drainage holes in longwall panels is now being evaluated. A study was completed in November 1986 where water was infused into two horizontal de-gas holes. Personal gravimetric samplers were used to measure respirable dust concentrations and showed a significant reduction in the infused zone. A more in depth study will be conducted. This paper will describe the dust control measures presently used on JWR longwalls, give the results of past studies, and discuss new methods proposed to control longwall dust.

In reviewing available vacuum filtration equipment in this paper, several types of filters have been included which are probably not familiar to operators in the mining industry. However, it was felt that these units might be of interest in the event that an application should arise for the filtration of a product in the future that does not exist today. In addition, exposure of our industry to equipment used in other industries might have a tendency to be thought provoking and perhaps lead to the development of equipment and/or applications in our industry which do not necessarily exist at this time. Most innovations in filtration equipment have been confined to the improvement or design change of components and accessories, particularly reflecting the availability of materials of construction that have been developed. Recent developments in the application of horizontal belt filters have been innovative. The application of this unit as a substitute for or an adjunct to thickeners in a CO circuit can certainly be innovative and perhaps provide a basis for reduction in capital and operating costs in this area. For example, mill tails are generally pumped at the highest possible density that will adequately flow. Tailings ponds and dams with their attendant design requirements are based upon this estimated water volume. Availability of a much dryer, non-flowing filter cake opens up several new options for disposal. Considerable cost savings could result in the design and planning of disposal areas for containing dryer material. . No attempt has been made in this paper to provide a manual for the operation of all of the many types of equipment that are available. Rather, the paper tries to present an overview.

The Falcon concentrator is capable of separating minerals in fine size classes based on their differential density. Separation of mineral particles depends upon the fluid flow characteristics and relative movement of particles in a fluid. In the present study, a fluid flow characteristic inside the Falcon concentrator was established through experimentation and modeling. The Falcon concentrator has two fluid entry points: (a) Fluid entering through gravity assisted feeding system and (b) Fluid entering through the fluidized hole on the concentrator wall. In order to identify the role of fluid entering the concentrator, a tracer was injected into the system. As per the tracer based experimentation, it was established that fluid entering through the gravity based feeding system is responsible for thin flowing film formation in the stratification zone where particles are stratified based on their relative density. The momentum balance and continuity equations were simplified for a high centrifugal force field, and the fluid velocity profile was estimated inside the thin flowing film. Estimated fluid flow profiles will help to simulate the particle trajectories inside the Falcon concentrator. The influence of rotational speed, fluid flow rate, and cone angle on the fluid velocity profile were investigated. Fluid thickness over the concentrator wall is also estimated, and it is typically of the order of ~150–200 μm.

Cross country belt conveyors are becoming the preferred method of bulk material handling in the industrial complex. Installed cost, maintenance, reliability, simplicity and operating expense enhance this choice, especially when faced with rising cost and questionable availability of liquid fuels. Conveyor flights are getting longer, faster, and higher in capacity, and are being installed in rugged terrain. Rights of way are often difficult to obtain. All these considerations lead up to design aspects well beyond those for in-plant conveyors. This paper points out some of the aspects that lead to the successful design of a cross country belt conveyor system.

Lithium requirements in the next few decades for batteries and controlled thermonuclear fusion reactors (CTR) may exceed the availability of the current mineral and brine reserves. It is thus prudent to search for new reserves and resources to satisfy these and future lithium applications. The lithium content of the waters from the Smackover oil field. located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, ranges from 100 to 500 mp/l and could represent a substantial new reserve. Experimental evidence described in the literature indicates that a specific chelating agent dipivaloylmethane (DPM), of the diketone type, has a specific selectivity toward lithium in the presence of other metal ions in aqueous solutions. Based in part on this unique property of dipivaloylmethane, a conceptual design of a full-size plant to extract lithium from the Smackover brine is presented in this paper. This study includes alternate flow-sheet development, design information on the major units of the process, energy requirements, and an economic analysis of a facility capable of producing 106 kg of lithium per year. The economics of three different process concepts depend primarily on the amount of water needing to be evaporated from the initial oil-field feed waters in concentrating the brine. The results, as a function of production rates, are indicated only in a general manner.

The present work emphasizes the selection in the separation of the apatite/calcite by the direct anionic flotation versus the double flotation, with a reverse second stage of the Jacupiranga phosphate ore. The double flotation would allow the obtaining of two concentrated solutions: one of them mainly constituted by a calcium carbonate material (CaCO3) and the other one, phosphatic (apatite). The calcium carbonate concentrated solution is used for the production of cement. The presence of phosphatic material in the calcium solution is not desirable, phosphor being a harmful element to cement. On the other hand, smaller quantities of calcite in the phosphate concentrate would represent a substantial economy in the processes of production of phosphated fertilizers. These processes make use of sulfuric acid to the solubilization of the apatite and the presence of calcium material consumes acid. Also that, when carbonates are solubilized, unwanted products are formed resulting in losses in the process and diminishing the quality of the fertilizer produced. These characteristics are discussed in the paper and are compared to another Brazilian phosphate ore, the reverse route of which can be considered more adequate. The results are discussed according to recent discoveries, and special emphasis is given to the use of corn starch and its crucial role in promoting the selection in the direct flotation process.

There is no such thing as an industrial minerals industry. There are, however, many industries operating in the general field of industrial minerals. And although we use the phrase "industrial minerals industry" out of sheer convenience, the only common denominator among, say, the potash mining and processing industry, the sulphur-sulphuric acid industry and the granite industry is, in fact, that they each are exploiting an industrial mineral resource. May I quote the person whom I consider to be the reigning Mr. Industrial Minerals, Robert L. Bates, who in the 4th edition, 1975, of Industrial Minerals and Rocks states: "An industry is considered to belong to the industrial minerals field if its operations consist of extraction and processing, but not manufacturing. Thus the mining and beneficiation of feldspar is a mineral industry, but the manufacture of ceramic products is not. In the cement and lime industries, processing merges into manufacture, and the line is less distinct. It disappears altogether in a plant that extracts salt as artificial brines, and makes sodium and chlorine chemicals, all under the same roof."

This paper presents an application of analytical hierarchy pro- cess (AHP) to predict the ranking of three beneficiation methods for a low grade, bulk gold deposit located in the interior Alaska. Seven criteria (attributes) were used for evaluating each beneficiation method. For each criterion a matrix of pairwise comparison between methods was developed. The normalized eigenvector of each matrix scales the beneficiation methods with regards to that criterion. An overall scale is constructed by weighting the scales of all the criteria. Methodology used also indicates a measure of inconsistency. This measure is useful in identifying possible errors in expressing judgments as well as actual inconsistencies in the judgment themselves. The outcome of the pro- cess is the best or optimum beneficiation method, considering all the necessary objectives, criteria, and alternatives in a single integrated framework.

After recalling the principles underlying fire-damp flow in coal and the essential part played by permeability (Darcy's law) in the intensity of flow, a few theoretical and experimental results showing the possible causes and range of variation of coal seam permeability are presented. The study of firedamp flow into gate roads and of residual gas concentrations in coals as a function of the gate road distance, shows that, in French mines, coal seams in a virgin zone have a very low permeability, but they become permeable when destressed by mine workings, in particular overlying workings. This is the case not only in the fractured zone round a mine excavation in which the gas is released, but also beyond the limit of the zone degassed by the excavation. In the floor of flat seams, upward boreholes can be used for predegassing seams that have been relaxed but not degassed, as the result of an overlying coal face. In this respect we shall describe the predrainage experiment carried out in the Marienau district of the Lorraine coalfield. Predrainage can contribute considerably to the reduction of methane emission in the ventilation of newly opened longwall faces. But to be efficient and useful predrainage should meet certain conditions.

The long-term goal of the Collaborative Research Centre 525 is the identification of options for the resource-sensitive supply and utilization of metallic raw materials. In order to address these issues, an integrated resource management system for metallic raw materials was developed and tested. Simulations were carried out, using the tools and methodical approaches developed in this system, in order to compare alternative operating scenarios for aluminium and copper. However, before these alternative operating scenarios could be formulated and assessed, it was necessary to develop a consistent set of indicators to monitor progress towards sustainable development in the processing and utilization of metallic raw materials. The primary objective of the centre is to develop a set of indicators, which adopt a holistic approach to resource management, thereby enabling the assessment of different operating scenarios within the broadest possible context. The target audience for this research consists of decision-makers in the realms of politics, business and industry, as well as NGO?s.

Rico is a small town in an old zinc mining district in a mountain valley of southeastern Colorado. Mine waste rock and mill “tailings” remained after over 100 years of mining in the area, leaving associated surface water and groundwater impacts. Atlantic Richfield Company is proposing an innovative approach, which uses lime precipitation and wetland ponds (semi-natural system, also called treatment lagoon in a wetland setting) to treat adit water in the Rico area. Besides using a non-conventional treatment approach, a non-conventional (non-Superfund) regulatory/administrative approach is being proposed. This paper will focus on the water treatment issues and solutions, as well as describing the innovative “watershed” regulatory process.

Most of the bauxite deposits in Europe belong to the karst type. They are located mainly ill Southern Europe along the Mediterranean Sea and in the Ural Mountains. Lateritic bauxite deposits occur on the Russian Platform, in Poland, Northern Ireland and in Turkey. Tikhvin-type deposits arc found on the Russian Platform. Bauxite formation in Europe started in the Middle Devonian. The main bauxite forming period was the Upper Cretaceous. Very few bauxites are younger than Eocene. Most deposits are covered by overburden of up to 1000 m. Prospecting is carried out by drilling. Several geophysical methods are used to detect the hidden deposits. Geostatistical methods were introduced in several countries for evaluation of the reserves and the geometry of the deposits. Data on bauxite production are given for 1982 and since the beginning of mining in Europe.
